Abstract
Dye wastewater possess immense toxicity with carcinogenic properties and they persist in environment owing to their stability and resistance to chemical and photochemical changes. The bio degradability of dye-contaminated wastewater is low due to its complex molecular structure. Nano-photocatalysts based on zinc oxide are reported as one of the effective metal oxides for dye remediation due to their photostability, enhanced UV and visible absorption capabilities in an affordable manner. An electron-hole pair forms when electrons in the valence band of ZnO nano-photocatalyst transfer into the conduction band by absorbing UV light. The review article presents a detailed review on ZnO applications for treating acidic and basic dyes along with the dye degradation performance based on operating conditions and photocatalytic kinetic models. Several acidic and basic dyes have been shown to degrade efficiently using ZnO and its nanocomposites. Higher removal percentages for crystal violet was reported at pH 12 by ZnO/Graphene oxide catalyst under 400 nm UV light, whereas acidic dye Rhodamine B at a pH of 5.8 was degraded to 100% by pristine ZnO. The mechanism of action of ZnO nanocatalysts in degrading the dye contamination are reported and the research gaps to make these agents in environmental remediation on real time operations are discussed.

Abstract
The oncogenic and genetic properties of anthracene, a member of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) family, pose a significant health threat to humans. This study aims to investigate the photocatalytic decomposition of anthracene under various conditions, such as different concentrations of PAHs, varying amounts of NiO (nickel oxide) nanoparticles, and different pH levels under ultraviolet light and sunlight. The synthesized NiO nanoparticles showed surface plasma resonance at 230 and 360 nm, while XRD and SEM analysis confirmed the nanoparticles were cubic crystalline in structure with sizes ranging between 37 and 126 nm. NiO nanoparticles exhibited 79% degradation of pyrene at 2 μg/mL of anthracene within 60 min of treatment. NiO at 10 μg/mL concentration showed significant adsorption of 57%, while the adsorption method worked efficiently (72%) at 5 pH. Photocatalytic degradation was confirmed by isotherm and kinetic studies through monolayer adsorption and pseudo-first-order kinetics. Further, the absorption process was confirmed by performing GC-MS analysis of the NiO nanoparticles. On the other hand, NiO nanoparticles showed antimicrobial activity against Gram negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Therefore, the present work is a one of its kind proving the dual application of NiO nanoparticles, which makes them suitable candidates for bioremediation by treating PAHs and killing pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
In this work, complete elimination of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium was achieved in 120 min using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process under sunlight at pH 6.5 in distilled water. A face-centered composite central design 22 with one categoric factor and three replicates at the central point was used to evaluate the effect of iron (III) oxide concentration (0.8-3.4 mg L-1), H2O2 (2-10 mg L-1), and the type of iron oxide phase (maghemite and hematite) on the inactivation of both bacteria. The results showed that the amount of catalyst, H2O2 concentration and their interaction were significant factors (p < 0.05) in the elimination of the microorganisms. Thus, under the best conditions (3.4 mg L-1 of iron (III) oxide and 10 mg L-1 of H2O2) in the experimental ranges, complete inactivation of E. coli and S. typhimurium was achieved (6-log reduction) in 120 min using the photo-Fenton treatment with both iron-oxide phases. Furthermore, the photocatalytic elimination of both bacteria by the photo-Fenton process using hematite and maghemite in secondary-treated wastewater effluent was performed obtaining slower inactivation rates (1.2-5.9 times) than in distilled water due to the matrix effect of the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. Nevertheless, the process continued to be effective in the effluent, achieving complete bacterial elimination in 150 min using the hematite phase. Additionally, the SEM images of the bacterial cells showed that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton treatment generated permanent and irreversible cell damage, resulting in complete cell death.

Abstract
The challenges associated with photocatalysts including their agglomeration, electron-hole recombination and limited optoelectronic reactivity to visible light during the photocatalysis of dye-laden effluent make it necessary to fabricate versatile polymeric composite photocatalysts, and in this case the incredibly reactive conducting polyaniline can be employed. The selection of polyaniline among the conducting polymers is based on its proficient functional impacts in composite blends and proficient synergism with other nanomaterials, especially semiconductor catalysts, resulting in a high photocatalytic performance for the degradation of dyes. However, the impacts of PANI in the composite matrix, which result in the desired photocatalytic activities, can only be assessed using multiple characterization techniques, involving both microscopic and spectroscopic assessment. The characterization results play a significant role in the detection of possible points of agglomeration, surface tunability and improved reactivity during the fabrication of composites, which are necessary to improve their performance in the photocatalysis of dyes. Accordingly, studies revealed the functional impacts of polyaniline in composites including morphological transformation, improved surface functionality, reduction in agglomeration and lowered bandgap potential employing different characterization techniques. In this review, we present the most proficient fabrication techniques based on the in situ approach to achieve improved functional and reactive features and efficiencies of 93, 95, 96, 98.6 and 99% for composites in dye photocatalysis.

Abstract
The decolorization of azo dye Orange II using a UVA-Fe3+-PMS-oxalate system was studied. A series of experiments was performed to investigate the effects of several variables, including the pH, PMS dosage, Fe3+ concentration, oxalate concentration, and coexisting anions. The results revealed that a lower pH facilitated the decolorization, and relatively high decolorization efficiency (97.5%) could be achieved within 5 min at pH 3.0. The electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) and radical quenching experiments revealed that SO4•− played a crucial role in the decolorization of Orange II (85.8%), •OH was of secondary importance (9%), and 1O2 made a small contribution to the decolorization (5.2%). Furthermore, the formation of •OH in the experimental system strongly depended on HO2•/O2•−. These reactive oxidants were able to directly attack the azo bond of the luminescent group in Orange II and initiate the decolorization process. The efficient UVA-Fe3+-PMS-oxalate system showed great application potential in the treatment of wastewater contaminated by azo dyes.

Abstract
Photocatalytic inactivation of pathogens in aqueous waste is gaining increasing attention. Several homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic protocols exist using the Fenton's reagent and TiO2, respectively. A comprehensive study of homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysis on a range of microorganisms will significantly establish the most efficient method. Here, we report a comparative study of TiO2- and Fe+3-based photocatalytic inactivation under UV-A of diverse microorganisms, including Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria, bacterial spores (Bacillus stearothermophilus spores) and viruses (MS2). We also present data on the optimization of TiO2 photocatalysis, including optimal catalyst concentration and H2O2 supplementation. Our results indicate that both photo-Fenton and TiO2 could be successfully applied for the management of microbial loads in liquids. Efficient microorganism inactivation is achieved with homogeneous photocatalysis (7 mg/L Fe+3, 100 mg/L H2O2, UV-A) in a shorter processing time compared to heterogeneous photocatalysis (0.5 g/L TiO2, UV-A), whereas similar or shorter processing is required when heterogenous photocatalysis is performed using microorganism-specific optimized TiO2 concentrations and H2O2 supplementation (100 mg/L); higher H2O2 concentrations further enhance the heterogenous photocatalytic inactivation efficiency. Our study provides a template protocol for the design and further application for large-scale photocatalytic approaches to inactivate pathogens in liquid biomedical waste.

Abstract
Water contamination is a global health problem, and the need for safe water is ever-growing due to the public health implications of unsafe water. Contaminated water could contain pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, and viruses that are implicated in several debilitating human diseases. The prevalence and survival of waterborne viruses differ from bacteria and other waterborne microorganisms. In addition, viruses are responsible for more severe waterborne diseases such as gastroenteritis, myocarditis, and encephalitis among others, hence the need for dedicated attention to viral inactivation. Disinfection is vital to water treatment because it removes pathogens, including viruses. The commonly used methods and techniques of disinfection for viral inactivation in water comprise physical disinfection such as membrane filtration, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and conventional chemical processes such as chlorine, monochloramine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone among others. However, the production of disinfection by-products (DBPs) that accompanies chemical methods of disinfection is an issue of great concern due to the increase in the risks of harm to humans, for example, the development of cancer of the bladder and adverse reproductive outcomes. Therefore, this review examines the conventional disinfection approaches alongside emerging disinfection technologies, such as photocatalytic disinfection, cavitation, and electrochemical disinfection. Moreover, the merits, limitations, and log reduction values (LRVs) of the different disinfection methods discussed were compared concerning virus removal efficiency. Future research needs to merge single disinfection techniques into one to achieve improved viral disinfection, and the development of medicinal plant-based materials as disinfectants due to their antimicrobial and safety benefits to avoid toxicity is also highlighted.

Abstract
The immobilized coatings as a kind of promising Fenton-like catalysts with excellent performance and reusability for the efficient degradation of antibiotics and phenol under solar light irradiation is investigated. Herein, the porous γ-Fe2O3/SiO2 immobilized ceramic coating on TC4 titanium alloy as photo-Fenton catalyst was prepared via plasma electrolytic oxidation technology. The as-obtained immobilized coating manifested a remarkable catalytic activity that the removal efficiencies of phenol and various antibiotics could reach more than 92% within 90 min, and presented excellent reusability after six runs in phenol removal. The high activity and excellent reusability of γ-Fe2O3 were attributed to the synergistic effect of multiple pathways to jointly produce abundant •OH, and the combination of γ-Fe2O3 and SiO2 in the coating could effectively reduce iron leaching during the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for the synthesis of high-performance photo-Fenton catalysts to dispose of wastewater in the future.

Abstract
In response to the enormous threat to human survival and development caused by the large number of viruses, it is necessary to strengthen the defense against and elimination of viruses. Metallic materials have been used against viruses for thousands of years due to their broad-spectrum antiviral properties, wide sources and excellent physicochemical properties; in particular, metal nanoparticles have advanced biomedical research. However, researchers in different fields hold dissimilar views on the antiviral mechanisms, which has slowed down the antiviral application of metal nanoparticles. As such, this review begins with an exhaustive compilation of previously published work on the antiviral capacity of metal nanoparticles and other materials. Afterwards, the discussion is centered on the antiviral mechanisms of metal nanoparticles at the biological and physicochemical levels. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the strong reducibility of metal nanoparticles may be the main reason for their efficient inactivation of viruses. We hope that this review will benefit the promotion of metal nanoparticles in the antiviral field and expedite the construction of a barrier between humans and viruses.

Abstract
The prevalence of global health implications from the COVID-19 pandemic necessitates the innovation and large-scale application of disinfection technologies for contaminated surfaces, air, and wastewater as the significant transmission media of disease. To date, primarily recommended disinfection practices are energy exhausting, chemical driven, and cause severe impact on the environment. The research on advanced oxidation processes has been recognized as promising strategies for disinfection purposes. In particular, semiconductor-based photocatalysis is an effective renewable solar-driven technology that relies on the reactive oxidative species, mainly hydroxyl (•OH) and superoxide (•O2-) radicals, for rupturing the capsid shell of the virus and loss of pathogenicity. However, the limited understanding of critical aspects such as viral photo-inactivation mechanism, rapid virus mutagenicity, and virus viability for a prolonged time restricts the large-scale application of photocatalytic disinfection technology. In this work, fundamentals of photocatalysis disinfection phenomena are addressed with a reviewed remark on the reported literature of semiconductor photocatalysts efficacies against SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, to validate the photocatalysis process on an industrial scale, we provide updated data on available commercial modalities for an effective virus photo-inactivation process. An elaborative discussion on the long-term challenges and sustainable solutions is suggested to fill in the existing knowledge gaps. We anticipate this review will ignite interest among researchers to pave the way to the photocatalysis process for disinfecting virus-contaminated environments and surfaces for current and future pandemics.

Abstract
The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) raises questions about the effective inactivation of its causative agent, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in medical wastewater by disinfectants. For this reason, our study of wastewater from a selected hospital evaluated several different advanced oxidation methods (Fenton reaction and Fenton-like reaction and ferrate (VI)) capable of effectively removing SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The obtained results of all investigated oxidation processes, such as ferrates, Fenton reaction and its modifications achieved above 90% efficiency in degradation of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in model water. The efficiency of degradation of real SARS-CoV-2 from hospital wastewater declines in following order ferrate (VI) > Fenton reaction > Fenton-like reaction. Similarly, the decrease of chemical oxygen demand compared to effluent was observed. Therefore, all of these methods can be used as a replacement of chlorination at the wastewater effluent, which appeared to be insufficient in SARS-CoV-2 removal (60%), whereas using of ferrates showed efficiency of up to 99%.

Abstract
Reactivity of oxidative species with target pollutants is one of the crucial parameters for application of any system based on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This work presents new useful approach how to determine the hydroxyl radical reaction rate constants (kOH) using UVA laser flash photolysis technique. Fe (III) hydroxocomplex at pH 3 was applied as a standard source of hydroxyl radicals and methyl viologen dication (MV2+) was used as selective probe for •OH radical. Application of MV2+ allows to determine kOH values even for compounds which do not generate themselves optically detectable transient species in reaction with hydroxyl radicals. Validity of this approach was tested on a wide range of different persistent pesticides and its main advantages and drawbacks in comparison with existing steady-state and time-resolved techniques were discussed.

Abstract
The challenges associated with the uncontrolled presence of antibiotics such as tetracycline in the environment have necessitated their removal through different techniques. Tetracycline is hard to degrade in living organisms and can even be converted to more toxic substances. In view of this, we synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles with good magnetization (70 emu g−1) and 15 nm particle size for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. Characterization carried out on the synthesized iron oxides revealed a bandgap of 1.83 eV and an isoelectric point at pH 6.8. The results also showed that the pH of the solution does not directly influence the adsorption of tetracycline. The adsorption isotherm was consistent with the model proposed by Langmuir, having 97 mg g−1 adsorption capacity. Combined with the superparamagnetic behavior, this capacity is advantageous for the magnetic extraction of tetracycline from wastewater. The mechanisms of adsorption were proposed to be hydrogen bonding and n-π interactions. Photocatalytic degradation studies showed that approximately 40% of tetracycline degraded within 60 min of irradiation time with UV/vis light. The kinetics of photodegradation of tetracycline followed the pseudo-first-order mechanism, proceeding through hydroxyl radicals generated under illumination. Moreover, the photogenerated hydrogen peroxide could lead to heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles, additionally generating hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals and facilitating photodegradation of tetracycline.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of combination of ultrasonic process with UV light and both classical Fenton (CFP) and modified Fenton (MFP) processes on disintegration of waste sludge were investigated. Fe2+ and Fe0 dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage, reaction time, pH, and different UV lamps were optimized to achieve a high degree of disintegration (DD). In addition, kinetic study and toxicity analysis were performed under optimum conditions for all processes. For CFP, the best DD 22.85% was found with optimum pH 3, reaction time 60 min, 7 g/kg TS Fe2+, 35 g/kg TS H2O2 doses, and UV-C light, while this value increased to 37.83% with ultrasound (US) application. For MFP; the best DD was achieved as 25.84% with optimum pH 3, reaction time 60 min, 5 g/kg TS Fe0, 25 g/kg TS H2O2 doses, and UV-C light; however, it rose to 42.32% in the presence of US. The use of US in all processes increased the germination percentage that expresses the sludge toxicity, up to 100%. In the kinetic study, it was found that all processes are in compliance with zeroth-order kinetics. It was concluded with this study that US has an important synergistic effect on Fenton applications and contributes to sludge disintegration.

Abstract
Water and wastewater virological quality is a significant public health issue. Viral agents include emerging and re-emerging pathogens characterized by extremely small size, and high environmental stability. Since the mainly used conventional disinfection methods are usually not able to achieve complete disinfection of viral and other microbial targets, in real water and wastewater matrices, effective strategies for the treatment, use and reuse of water and the development of next-generation water supply systems are required. The scope of the present systematic review was to summarize research data on the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for viral disinfection of water and wastewater. A literature survey was conducted using the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. This comprehensive research yielded 23 records which met the criteria and were included and discussed in this review. Most of the studies (14/23) used only MS2 bacteriophage as an index virus, while the remaining studies (9/23) used two or more viral targets, including phages (MS2, T4, T7, phiX174, PRD-1, S2, ϕB124-14, ϕcrAssphage) and/or Adenovirus, Aichivirus, Norovirus (I, II, IV), Polyomavirus (JC and BK), Sapovirus, Enterovirus, Coxsackievirus B3, Echovirus, and Pepper mild mottle virus. The vast majority of the studies applied a combination of two or more treatments and the most frequently used process was ultraviolet light-hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) advanced oxidation. The review is expected to highlight the potential of the AOPs for public health protection from the waterborne viral exposure.

Abstract
Recently, an increasing number of works have been reported about iron-based materials applied as catalysts in peroxide activation processes to degrade pollutants in water. Iron-based catalysts include synthetic and natural iron-based materials. However, some synthetic iron-based materials are difficult to scale up in the practical applications due to high cost and serious secondary environmental pollution. In contrast, natural iron-based minerals are more available and cheaper, and also hold a great promise in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation. In this review, we classify different natural iron-based materials into two categories: iron oxide minerals (e.g., magnetite, hematite, and goethite,), and iron sulfide minerals (e.g., pyrite and pyrrhotite,). Their overview applications in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation in wastewaters are systematically summarized for the first time. Moreover, the peroxide activation mechanisms induced by natural minerals, and the influences of reaction conditions in different systems are discussed. Finally, the application prospects and existing drawbacks of natural iron-based minerals in the peroxide activation processes for wastewater treatment are proposed. We believe this review can shed light on the application of natural iron-based minerals in peroxide activation processes and present better perspectives for future researches.

Abstract
Recent developments in nanoscience have appreciably modified how diseases are prevented, diagnosed, and treated. Metal nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), are widely used in bioscience. From time to time, various synthetic methods for the synthesis of AgNPs are reported, i.e., physical, chemical, and photochemical ones. However, among these, most are expensive and not eco-friendly. The physicochemical parameters such as temperature, use of a dispersing agent, surfactant, and others greatly influence the quality and quantity of the synthesized NPs and ultimately affect the material’s properties. Scientists worldwide are trying to synthesize NPs and are devising methods that are easy to apply, eco-friendly, and economical. Among such strategies is the biogenic method, where plants are used as the source of reducing and capping agents. In this review, we intend to debate different strategies of AgNP synthesis. Although, different preparation strategies are in use to synthesize AgNPs such as electron irradiation, optical device ablation, chemical reduction, organic procedures, and photochemical methods. However, biogenic processes are preferably used, as they are environment-friendly and economical. The review covers a comprehensive discussion on the biological activities of AgNPs, such as antimicrobial, anticancer anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic potentials of AgNPs. The use of AgNPs in water treatment and disinfection has also been discussed in detail.

Abstract
The contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for COVID-19 disease, has infected over 27 million people across the globe within a few months. While literature on SARS-CoV-2 indicates that its transmission may occur predominantly via aerosolization of virus-laden droplets, the possibility of alternate routes of transmission and/or reinfection via the environment requires considerable scientific attention. This review aims to collate information on possible transmission routes of this virus, to ascertain its fate in the environment. Concomitant with the presence of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in faeces and saliva of infected patients, studies also indicated its occurrence in raw wastewater, primary sludge and river water. Therefore sewerage system could be a possible route of virus outbreak, a possible tool to assess viral community spread and future surveillance technique. Hence, this review looked into detection, occurrence and fate of SARS-CoV-2 during primary, secondary, and tertiary wastewater and water treatment processes based on published literature on SARS-CoV and other enveloped viruses. The review also highlights the need for focused research on occurrence and fate of SARS-CoV-2 in various environmental matrices. Utilization of this information in environmental transmission models developed for other enveloped and enteric viruses can facilitate risk assessment studies. Preliminary research efforts with SARS-CoV-2 and established scientific reports on other coronaviruses indicate that the threat of virus transmission from the aquatic environment may be currently non-existent. However, the presence of viral RNA in wastewater provides an early warning that highlights the need for effective sewage treatment to prevent a future outbreak of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Microbial pathogenic contaminations have world widely represented a serious health hazard to humans. Viruses, as a member of microbial contaminants, seriously threaten human health due to their high environmental resistance, having small sizes, and causing an extensive range of diseases. Therefore, selecting an appropriate technology to remove viral contaminants from the air, water, and foods is of prominent significance. Traditional methods for viral disinfection have not proven to be highly practical and effective because they need high energy resources and operational expenses. In recent years, semiconductor-based photocatalysis has attracted more attention in the field of microorganism inactivation due to its outstanding performance and mild reaction conditions. Therefore, this review primarily concentrates on the recent development in viral inactivation/disinfection by heterogeneous photocatalysts. Moreover, the photocatalytic viral inactivation of waterborne, airborne, and foodborne viruses is discussed. Given the appealing merits of heterogeneous photocatalytic disinfection of viruses, there is no doubt that this technology will be an impressively active research field and a source of comfort and confidence to humans in battling against viruses.

Abstract
There have been ever-growing demands for disinfection of water and air in recent years. Efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective methods of disinfection for pathogens are vital to the health of human beings. The photocatalysis route has attracted worldwide attention due to its highly efficient oxidative capabilities and sustainable recycling, which can be used to realize the disinfection purposes without secondary pollution. Though many studies have comprehensively reviewed the work about photocatalytic disinfection, including design and fabrication of photocatalytic coatings, inactivation mechanisms, or practical applications, systematic reviews about the disinfection photocatalysis coatings from fabrication to effort for practical use are still rare. Among different ways of fabricating photocatalytic materials, thermal spray is a versatile surface coating technique and competitive in constructing large-scale functional coatings, which is a most promising way for the future environmental purification, biomedical and life health applications. In this review, we briefly introduced various photocatalytic materials and corresponding inactivation mechanisms for virus, bacteria and fungus. We summarized the thermal-sprayed photocatalysts and their antimicrobial performances. Finally, we discussed the future perspectives of the photocatalytic disinfection coatings for potential applications. This review would shed light on the development and implementation of sustainable disinfection strategies that is applicable for extensive use for controlling pathogens in the near future.

Abstract
Iron-modified graphitic carbon nitride (FG materials) was prepared through a simple and cost-effective method using iron oxide and melamine to achieve simultaneous oxidation and adsorption of arsenic. We hypothesized that graphitic carbon nitride oxidizes As(III) to As(V) under light irradiation, and the converted As(V) is adsorbed by the amorphous iron phase on FG materials. FG materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area, ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As(III) was efficiently transformed to As(V) due to the photocatalytic-oxidation ability of graphic carbon nitride under visible and UV light irradiation, the oxidized As(V) was adsorbed by the amorphous iron phases, and As species were removed from the system. The removal efficiency of As(III) decreased from 50%, 41%, and 33% under UV light, visible light and dark, respectively. FG materials exhibited the photocatalytic-oxidation ability and adsorption capacity, and a synergistic effect was observed between graphitic carbon nitride and iron oxide. Removal of As can be achieved even under visible light, confirming the field applicability of low-cost FG materials.

Abstract
The aim of this research is to clarify the contribution of sunlight wavelengths, irradiance and Fe2+/H2O2 during bacterial disinfection by the photo-Fenton process in clear surface waters. We considered different solar spectrum distributions (visible, UVA-Visible), sub-critical irradiances (0-400 W/m2), focusing on the action modes of E. coli inactivation by the constituents involved in the composite process, at low μM reactants concentration (Fe2+/H2O2) in in ultrapure (MQ) water. We report that solar disinfection improved with Fenton reagents (photo-Fenton process) is a reality from very low light irradiance values (200 W/m2), and made possible even without the presence of UVA radiation, even when using low quantities of the Fenton reagents (0.5 mg/L Fe2+, 5 mg/L H2O2). Under light exposure, H2O2 was found to augment the intracellular Fenton process and Fe2+ to initiate further, distinct oxidative actions. Finally, validation was performed in Lake Geneva water over a wider irradiance range, where the photo-Fenton process was found to be reagent-dependent in low irradiance, shifting to light-driven in the higher values.

Abstract
The use of the solar photo-Fenton process for water treatment requires monitoring of the main conditions, especially the total dissolved iron concentration and the consumption of hydrogen peroxide. In this study, a new methodology using the PhotoMetrixPRO application was validated for rapid monitoring of total dissolved iron and hydrogen peroxide concentrations, and was tested in the solar photo-Fenton process. A comparison was made between the results obtained using a reference spectrophotometric method and the PhotoMetrixPRO application employing a portable device. Both methods were validated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, precision, robustness, and matrix effects. The degree of dispersion between the series of measurements obtained using UV-vis and portable device tool was low and was in compliance with the established Brazilian and ICH validation criteria. Additionally, PhotoMetrixPRO enabled the use of a smaller sample volume. The total volume generated of each sample is 1 mL, reducing 6 and 10 times the wastes produced in different validated methods. These results evidencing that the miniaturization can provide positive advantages in terms of simplicity, cost effectiveness, and less environmental impact. PhotoMetrixPRO offers significant advantages including rapid analysis, smaller sample volumes, and greater portability and accessibility.

Effect of solar photo-Fenton process in raceway pond reactors at neutral pH on antibiotic resistance determinants in secondary treated urban wastewater. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2019; 378:120737. Abstract
Solar photo-Fenton process in raceway pond reactors was investigated at neutral pH as a sustainable tertiary treatment of real urban wastewater. In particular, the effect on antibiotic resistance determinants was evaluated. An effective inactivation of different wild bacterial populations was achieved considering total and cefotaxime resistant bacteria. The detection limit (1 CFU mL-1) was achieved in the range 80-100 min (5.4-6.7 kJ L-1 of cumulative solar energy required) for Total Coliforms (TC) (40-60 min for resistant TC, 4.3-5.2 kJ L-1), 60-80 min (4.5-5.4 kJ L-1) for Escherichia coli (E. coli) (40 min for resistant E. coli, 4.1-4.7 kJ L-1) and 40-60 min (3.9-4.5 kJ L-1) for Enterococcus sp. (Entero) (30-40 min for resistant Entero, 3.2-3.8 kJ L-1) with 20 mg L-1 Fe2+ and 50 mg L-1 H2O2. Under these mild oxidation conditions, 7 out of the 10 detected antibiotics were effectively removed (60-100%). As the removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is of concern, no conclusive results were obtained, as sulfonamide resistance gene was reduced to some extent (relative abundance <1), meanwhile class 1 integron intI1 and ß-lactam resistance genes were not affected. Accordingly, more research and likely more intensive oxidative conditions are needed for an efficient ARGs removal.

Abstract
The main objective of this study is the degradation of a synthetic solution of atrazine by a modified vermiculite catalyzed ozonation, in a rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor. A 0.5 L RPB reactor was used to perform the experiments, using a Central Composite Design (CCD) response surface to construct the quadratic model based on the factors: pH, catalyst concentration and reactor rotation frequency. The response variable was the removal of the organic load measured in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). After the complete quadratic model was constructed through the response surface, the COD degradation process had an optimal removal of 41% under the following conditions: pH 8.0, rotation of 1150 rpm and catalyst concentration 0.66 g L-1.

Abstract
The optimization of the Catalytic Wet Peroxide Oxidation (CWPO) assisted by an Al/Fe-pillared clay (Al/Fe-PILC) was assessed in the inactivation of the MS2 coliphage in the presence of a synthetic surrogate of natural organic matter (NOM). The simultaneous effect of two experimental factors (i) H2O2 dose - (H2O2)d (3.00-25.50 % of the H2O2 theoretically required for full mineralization) and (ii) catalyst concentration (0.33-2.60 g/L), and four non-controllable variables (covariates) (a) circumneutral pH (6.00-9.00), (b) temperature (5.00-25.0 °C), (c) synthetic NOM concentration (2.0-20.0 mg C/L) and (d) MS2 titer (104, 105 and 106 PFU/mL) was investigated by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Every response was modeled and maximized: (1) MS2 inactivation, (2) fraction of reacted H2O2, (3) decolourization and (4) NOM mineralization. Multi-response optimization via desirability function based on responses (1) to (3) achieved excellent fitting (0.94 out of 1.0) and following set of optimal experimental conditions: 0.33 g Al/Fe-PILC/L, 3.36 % (H2O2)d (Feactive/H2O2) = 0.46, giving rise to 92.9 % of MS2 inactivation and 100 % of reacted H2O2 at pH 7.07, 25.0 +/- 0.1 °C, 16.06 mg C/L as starting NOM concentration, and MS2 titer of 106 PFU/mL after just 70 min of reaction.

Abstract
In this manuscript, a novel reduced graphene oxide nanosheet/FexOy/nitrogen-doped carbon layer (rGS/FexOy/NCL) aerogel with FexOy NPs sandwiched between rGS and NCL was prepared via a two-step method. Their catalytic performance was evaluated in a photo-Fenton degradation of rhodamine B. It was found that rGS/FexOy/NCL aerogel represented higher degradation activity than the sum of rGS/NCL support and FexOy NPs, suggesting synergistic effect was established between support and reactive species. The degradation activity was investigated on the basis of aerogel usage, FexOy loading, H2O2 dosage, pH value and RhB concentration. To test stability and reusability, leaching experiments, cyclic experiments and structural analysis were carried out. Based on inhibitor experiment and intermediate detection, a possible catalytic mechanism and degradation pathway of RhB were proposed.

Degradation of diclofenac by H 2O 2 activated with pre-magnetization Fe 0: Influencing factors and degradation pathways. CHEMOSPHERE 2018; 212:853-862. Abstract
Diclofenac sodium (DCF) is frequently detected as a non-steroidal pharmaceutical in the aquatic environment. In this study, the degradation of DCF in two heterogeneous systems, pre-magnetization Fe0/H2O2 (Pre-Fe0/H2O2) and Fe0/H2O2 system, was comparably studied. Our findings proved that Pre-Fe0 could significantly improve the degradation and dechlorination of DCF due to the change of Fe0 characteristics after pre-magnetization. Compared with Fe0/H2O2 process, Pre-Fe0/H2O2 process has 2.1-7.0 times higher rate constant for DCF degradation at different H2O2 dosages (0.25-2.0 mM), initial pH (3.0-6.0) and Fe0 dosages (0.25-1.5 mM). The characterizations by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance confirmed that the enhancement attributed to the increase of Fe0 corrosion and fast generation of OH. In addition, preliminary degradation mechanism was elucidated by major products identification using UPLC-MS, through which the degradation intermediates, such as 4-hydroxy-diclofenac or 5-hydroxydiclofenac, 2,6-dichloroaniline, phenylacetic acid, 1,3-dichlorobenzene and 2-aminophenylacetic acid were identified. Hydroxylation, decarboxylation, CN bond cleavage and ring-opening involving the attack of OH or other substances, were the main degradation mechanism. Therefore, Pre-Fe0/H2O2 process, which does not need extra energy and costly reagents, is an efficient and environmental-friendly process to degrade DCF.

Solar photo-Fenton disinfection of 11 antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and elimination of representative AR genes. Evidence that antibiotic resistance does not imply resistance to oxidative treatment. WATER RESEARCH 2018; 143:334-345. [PMID: 29986243 DOI: 10.1016/j.watres.2018.06.062] [Citation(s) in RCA: 78] [Impact Index Per Article: 13.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/21/2018] [Revised: 06/24/2018] [Accepted: 06/26/2018] [Indexed: 06/08/2023]
Abstract
The emergence of antibiotic resistance represents a major threat to human health. In this work we investigated the elimination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) by solar light and solar photo-Fenton processes. As such, we have designed an experimental plan in which several bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) possessing different drug-susceptible and -resistant patterns and structures (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) were subjected to solar light and the photo-Fenton oxidative treatment in water. We showed that both solar light and solar photo-Fenton processes were effective in the elimination of ARB in water and that the time necessary for solar light disinfection and solar photo-Fenton disinfection were similar for antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant strains (mostly 180-240 and 90-120 min, respectively). Moreover, the bacterial structure did not significantly affect the effectiveness of the treatment. Similar regrowth pattern was observed (compared to the susceptible strain) and no development of bacteria with higher drug-resistance values was found in waters after any treatment. Finally, both processes were effective to reduce AR genes (ARGs), although solar photo-Fenton was more rapid than solar light. In conclusion, the solar photo-Fenton process ensured effective disinfection of ARB and elimination of ARGs in water (or wastewater) and is a potential mean to ensure limitation of ARB and ARG spread in nature.
