New insights into aniline toxicity: Aniline exposure triggers envelope stress and extracellular polymeric substance formation in Rubrivivax benzoatilyticus JA2

Evaluation of aerobic granulation performance bioaugmented with the auto-aggregating bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri strain XL-2 with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification capacity

In this study, the possibility of an auto-aggregating bacterium Pseudomonas strain XL-2 with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification capacity for improving granulation and nitrogen removal was evaluated. The results showed that the supplementation of strain XL-2 promoted granulation, making R1 (experimental group with strain XL-2) dominated by granules at 14 d, which was 12 days earlier than R2 (control group without strain XL-2). This was attributed to the promotion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, particularly proteins by adding strain XL-2, thereby improving the hydrophobicity of sludge and altering the proteins secondary structures to facilitate aggregation. Meanwhile, adding strain XL-2 improved simultaneous nitrification and denitrification efficiency of R1. Microbial community analysis indicated that strain XL-2 successfully proliferated in aerobic granule sludge and might induce the enrichment of genera such as Flavobacterium and Paracoccus that were favorable for EPS secretion and denitrification, jointly promoting granulation and enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency.

Construction of a novel Eu-MOF material based on different detection mechanisms and its application in sensing pollutants aniline, F- and Hg2

Aniline is an organic pollutant with carcinogenicity and teratogenicity, while F- and Hg2+ are toxic ions that are easily soluble in water. When they are released to the environment, they will pose a threat to human health. Designing a material that can simultaneously detect three types of pollutants is of great significance. In this paper, a novel rare earth metal organic framework material (Eu-MOF) with three-dimensional structure based on 1-methylimidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid was synthesized for the first time through solvent thermal method. It has excellent luminescent performance and can be used as a multifunctional fluorescent probe to detect aniline, F-, and Hg2+ based on photoinduced electron transfer, energy competitive absorption, and ion exchange mechanisms, with detection limits of 1.79 × 10-8, 8.13 × 10-8, and 8.83 × 10-7 M, respectively. It is worth noting that Eu-MOF can detect F- and Hg2+ in real water samples, such as lake water and green tea water, with favorable recovery rates.

Formation of nitrogen-containing disinfection by-products during the chloramination treatment of an emerging pollutant

Chloramination was commonly used as disinfectant for killing pathogens in water. However, in this process, nitrogen-containing disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) would accidently form and subsequently rise toxicity. Here, we investigated acute toxicity variation and by-products formation during chloramination treatment on UV filter 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-sulfonic acid benzophenone (BP-4). Under alkaline conditions, the acute toxicity of this system had significant increase. A total of 17 transformation products were tentatively identified, and for them, plausible transformation pathways were proposed. Noticeably, numerous aniline and nitrosobenzene analogs were detected, and the dramatic increase of acute toxicity in this system might be primarily attributed to the formation of benzoquinone and aniline analogs. Besides, bromophenol, iodophenol and iodobenzoquinone analogs exhibiting high toxicity were generated in the presence of bromine and iodide ions. This study indicates that chloramination treatment may significantly increase potential health risk, further management on disinfection system is reasonable.

Complete biodegradation of fungicide carboxin and its metabolite aniline by Delftia sp. HFL-1

Fungicide carboxin was commonly used in the form of seed coating for the prevention of smut, wheat rust and cotton damping-off, leading carboxin and its probable carcinogenic metabolite aniline to directly enter the soil with the seeds, causing residual pollution. In this study, a novel carboxin degrading strain, Delftia sp. HFL-1, was isolated. Strain HFL-1 could use carboxin as the carbon source for growth and completely degrade 50 mg/L carboxin and its metabolite aniline within 24 h. The optimal temperatures and pH for carboxin degrading by strain HFL-1 were 30 to 42 °C and 5 to 9, respectively. Furthermore, the complete mineralization pathway of carboxin by strain HFL-1 was revealed by High Resolution Mass Spectrometer (HRMS). Carboxin was firstly hydrolyzed into aniline and further metabolized into catechol through multiple oxidation processes, and finally converted into 4-hydroxy-2-oxopentanoate, a precursor of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Genome sequencing revealed the corresponding degradation genes and cluster of carboxin. Among them, amidohydrolase and dioxygenase were key enzymes involved in the degradation of carboxin and aniline. The discovery of transposons indicated that the aniline degradation gene cluster in strain HFL-1 was obtained via horizontal transfer. Furthermore, the degradation genes were cloned and overexpressed. The in vitro test showed that the expressed degrading enzyme could efficiently degrade aniline. This study provides an efficient strain resource for the bioremediation of carboxin and aniline in contaminated soil, and further revealing the molecular mechanism of biodegradation of carboxin and aniline.

Comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography with high resolution mass spectrometry to investigate the photoelectrochemical degradation of environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals and their degradation products in water

The widespread presence of organic micropollutants in the environment reflects the inability of traditional wastewater treatment plants to remove them. In this context, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as promising quaternary wastewater treatment technologies since they efficiently degrade recalcitrant components by generating highly reactive free radicals. Nonetheless, the chemical characterization of potentially harmful byproducts is essential to avoid the contamination of natural water bodies with hazardous substances. Given the complexity of wastewater matrices, the implementation of comprehensive analytical methodologies is required. In this work, the simultaneous photoelectrochemical degradation of seven environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals and one metabolite from the EU Watch List 2020/1161 was examined in ultrapure water and simulated wastewater, achieving excellent removal efficiencies (overall >95%) after 180 min treatment. The reactor unit was linked to an online LC sample manager, allowing for automated sampling every 15 min and near real-time process monitoring. Online comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC × LC) coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was subsequently used to tentatively identify degradation products after photoelectrochemical degradation. Two reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) columns were used: an SB-C18 column operated with 5 mM ammonium formate at pH 5.8 (1A) and methanol (1B) as the mobile phases in the first dimension and an SB-Aq column using acidified water at pH 3.1 (2A) and acetonitrile (2B) as the mobile phases in the second dimension. This resulted in a five-fold increase in peak capacity compared to one-dimensional LC while maintaining the same total analysis time of 50 min. The LC x LC method allowed the tentative identification of 12 venlafaxine, 7 trimethoprim and 10 ciprofloxacin intermediates. Subsequent toxicity predictions suggested that some of these byproducts were potentially harmful. This study presents an effective hybrid technology for the simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals from contaminated wastewater matrices and demonstrates how multidimensional liquid chromatography techniques can be applied to better understand the degradation mechanisms after the treatment of micropollutants with AOPs.

Sub-lethal concentration of a colloidal nanosilver formulation (Silversol®) triggers dysregulation of iron homeostasis and nitrogen metabolism in multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

BACKGROUND

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a notorious pathogen. Its multidrug resistant strains are listed among priority pathogens against whom discovery of novel antibacterial agents and, elucidation of new anti-pathogenicity mechanisms are urgently warranted. This study describes multiple antibacterial effects of a colloidal nano-silver formulation- Silversol® against a multi-drug resistant strain of P. aeruginosa.

RESULTS

Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Silversol® against P. aeruginosa was found to be 1.5 ppm; and at sub-MIC of 1 ppm, it was able to alter quorum-sensing regulated pigmentation (pyocanin 82%↓; pyoverdine 48%↑), exopolysaccharide synthesis (76%↑) and biofilm formation, susceptibility to antibiotics (streptomycin and augmentin), protein synthesis and export (65%↑), nitrogen metabolism (37%↑ nitrite accumulation), and siderophore production in this pathogen. Network analysis of the differentially expressed genes in the transcriptome of the silversol-treated bacterium identified ten genes as the potential molecular targets: norB, norD, nirS, nirF, nirM, nirQ, nosZ, nosY, narK1, and norE (all associated with nitrogen metabolism or denitrification). Three of them (norB, narK1, and norE) were also validated through RT-PCR.

CONCLUSIONS

Generation of nitrosative stress and disturbance of iron homeostasis were found to be the major mechanisms associated with anti-Pseudomonas activity of Silversol®.

Unraveling the complexities of Cd-aniline composite pollution: Insights from standalone and joint toxicity assessments in a bacterial community

Cadmium (Cd) and aniline frequently co-occur in industrial settings but have rarely been addressed as composite toxicants in terms of the overall toxicity despite extensive knowledge of the environmental impact of each individual pollutant. In this study, we attempt to assess the relation of individual and combined toxic effects of Cd and aniline using a bacterial consortium cultured from soils as a model system. Results showed that the consortial bacteria exhibited drastically stronger tolerance to stand-alone Cd and aniline in comparison to literature data acquired from single species studies. When occurring simultaneously, the joint toxicity displayed a concentration-dependent behavior that wasn't anticipated based on individual chemical tests. Specifically, additive effects manifested with Cd and aniline at their IC10s, but changed to synergistic when the concentrations increased to IC20, and finally transitioned into antagonistic at IC30s and beyond. In addition, co-occurring aniline appeared to have retarded the cellular accumulation of Cd while increasing the enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase relative to that in Cd-alone treatments. Finally, the bacterial community experienced distinct compositional changes under solo and combined toxicities with several genera exhibiting inconsistent behavior between treatments of single and composite toxicants. Findings from this study highlight the complexity of bacterial response to composite pollutions and point to the need for more comprehensive references in risk and toxicology assessment at multi-chemical contamination sites.

Retrospect and prospect of aerobic biodegradation of aniline: Overcome existing bottlenecks and follow future trends

Aniline is a highly bio-toxic industrial product, even at low concentrations, whose related wastewater has been flowing out worldwide on a large scale along with human production. As a green technology, aerobic biological treatment has been widely applied in industrial wastewater and exhibited various characteristics in the field of aniline wastewater. Meanwhile, this technology has shown its potential of synchronous nitrogen removal, but it still consumes energy badly. In the face of resource scarcity, this review comprehensively discusses the existing research in aerobic biodegradation of aniline wastewater to find out the developmental dawn of aerobic biological treatment. Primarily, it put forward the evolution history details of aniline biodegradation from pure culture to mixed culture and then to simultaneous nitrogen removal. On this basis, it presented the existing challenges to further expand the application of aerobic biotechnology, including the confusions of aniline metabolic mechanism, the development of co-degradation of multiple pollutants and the lack of practical experience of bioreactor operation for aniline and nitrogen removal. Additionally, the prospects of the technological shift to meet the needs of an energy-conserving society was described according to existing experiences and feasibility. Including but not limiting to the development of multifunctional bacteria, the reduction of greenhouse gases and the combination of green technologies.

Rhodococcus Strains from the Specialized Collection of Alkanotrophs for Biodegradation of Aromatic Compounds

The ability to degrade aromatic hydrocarbons, including (i) benzene, toluene, o-xylene, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene, and benzo[a]pyrene; (ii) polar substituted derivatives of benzene, including phenol and aniline; (iii) N-heterocyclic compounds, including pyridine; 2-, 3-, and 4-picolines; 2- and 6-lutidine; 2- and 4-hydroxypyridines; (iv) derivatives of aromatic acids, including coumarin, of 133 Rhodococcus strains from the Regional Specialized Collection of Alkanotrophic Microorganisms was demonstrated. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of these aromatic compounds for Rhodococcus varied in a wide range from 0.2 up to 50.0 mM. o-Xylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were the less-toxic and preferred aromatic growth substrates. Rhodococcus bacteria introduced into the PAH-contaminated model soil resulted in a 43% removal of PAHs at an initial concentration 1 g/kg within 213 days, which was three times higher than that in the control soil. As a result of the analysis of biodegradation genes, metabolic pathways for aromatic hydrocarbons, phenol, and nitrogen-containing aromatic compounds in Rhodococcus, proceeding through the formation of catechol as a key metabolite with its following ortho-cleavage or via the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, were verified.

Intermolecular degradation of aromatic compound and its derivatives via combined sequential and hybridized process

The under-treated wastewater, especially remaining carcinogenic aromatic compounds in wastewater discharge has been expansively reported, wherein the efficiency of conventional wastewater treatment is identified as the primary contributor source. Herein, the advancement of wastewater treatments has drawn much attention in recent years. In the current study, combined sequential and hybridized treatment of thermolysis and coagulation-flocculation provides a novel advancement for environmental emerging pollutant (EP) prescription. This research is mainly demonstrating the mitigation efficiency and degradation pathway of pararosaniline (PRA) hybridized and combined sequential wastewater treatment. Notably, PRA degradation dominantly via a linkage of reaction: thermal cleavage, deamination, silication and diazene reduction. Thermolysis acts as an initiator for the PRA decomposition through thermally induced bond dissociation energy (BDE) for molecular fragmentation whilst coagulation-flocculation facilitates the formation of organo-bridged silsesquioxane as the final degradation product. Different from conventional treatment, the hybridized treatment showed excellent synergistic degradability by removing 99% PRA and its EPs, followed by combined sequential treatment method with 86% reduction. Comprehensive degradation pathway breakdown of carcinogenic and hardly degradable aromatic compounds provides a new insight for wastewater treatment whereby aniline and benzene are entirely undetectable in effluent. The degradation intermediates, reaction derivatives and end products were affirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (GC-MS, FTIR and UV-Vis). This finding provides valuable guidance in establishing efficient integrated multiple-step wastewater treatments.

Sustainable Production of Molybdenum Carbide (MXene) from Fruit Wastes for Improved Solar Evaporation

Freshwater production using solar-driven interfacial evaporation is regarded as a green and sustainable strategy. The biggest barrier to practical deployment of solar desalination, however, continues to be the lack of options for renewable materials. Herein, we present a facile two-step carbonization approach that is sustainable for developing innovative two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum carbide (Mo₂ C) materials derived from carbonized fruit wastes. The resultant 2D Mo₂ C photothermal layer has an efficient water evaporation rate of 1.52 kg m^-2  h^-1 with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 94 % under one sun irradiation, which is among the best reported values so far. The broad solar absorption band, high specific surface area (555.1 m²  g^-1 ) with large micro- and meso porosity, of the Mo₂ C photothermal layer are responsible for these outstanding results. The conversion of food wastes into valuable products, in this case MXene, can potentially inspire greener developments of advanced materials for solar water evaporator.

Elucidation of aniline adsorption-desorption mechanism on various organo-mineral complexes

Complexes formed by organic matter and clay minerals, which are active components of soil systems, play an important role in the migration and transformation of pollutants in nature. In this study, humic-acid-montmorillonite (HA-MT) and humic-acid-kaolin (HA-KL) complexes were prepared, and their structures before and after the adsorption of aniline were analyzed. The aniline adsorption-desorption characteristics of complexes with different clay minerals and varying HA contents were explored using the static adsorption-desorption equilibrium method. Compared with the pristine clay minerals, the flaky and porous structure of the complexes and the aromaticity were enhanced. The adsorption of aniline on the different clay mineral complexes was nonlinear, and the adsorption capacity increased with increasing HA content. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of HA-MT was higher than that of HA-KL. After adsorption, the specific surface area of the complexes decreased, the surfaces became more complicated, and the aromaticity decreased because aniline is primarily adsorption onto the complexes via aromatic rings. Aniline was adsorbed onto the complexes via spontaneous exothermic physical adsorption. The amount of aniline desorbed from the complexes increased with increasing HA content, and a lag in desorption was observed, with a greater lag for HA-KL than for HA-MT.

Potential for selective oxidation of aniline in soil washing effluent by active chlorine and testing its practicality

Recovery of surfactants in the soil washing effluent (SWE) can significantly reduce the cost of the soil washing (SW) technology. This paper consists of two parts experiments. The first part constructed a selective oxidation system of active chlorine by electrochemical technology to treat SWE. Three factors, current density, NaCl concentration and TW 80 to aniline concentration ratio (T/A), were set up for a total of nine sets of experiments after orthogonal design. The results of ANOVA analysis and visual analysis showed that the NaCl concentration greatly affected the aniline removal efficiency (ARE) and the TW 80 retention efficiency (TW 80 RE), and the effects were in opposite directions. The biotoxicity of the SWE decreased as the experiment progressed, and at the end of the experiment, 30%-45% of TW 80 was still present in each set. And the oxidation group quenching experiments determined that the degradation of aniline was mainly contributed by active chlorine. Because active chlorine slowed the loss rate of TW 80, the electrochemical treatment of SWE + soil in-situ sequential batch recirculation washing method was designed, and 50% of aniline in the soil was washed out after 125h. At the end of the experiment, the less biotoxic SWE was collected where no aniline and TW 80 were present, and only small organic acids were present after the GC-MS test. The method has a great potential to be applied as it shows good results in the treatment of soil pollution incidents.

Occurrence of primary aromatic amines and nicotine in sediments collected from the United States

Despite extensive use of primary aromatic amines (AAs) in consumer products, little is known about their occurrence in the environment. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of 14 AAs and nicotine in 75 sediment samples collected from seven estuarine and freshwater ecosystems in the Unites States. Additionally, risk quotients (RQs) were calculated to assess potential risks of these chemicals to aquatic organisms. Of the 14 AAs analyzed, seven of them were found in sediments. The sum concentrations of seven AAs in sediments were in the range of 10.2 to 1810 ng/g, dry wt (mean: 388 ng/g). Aniline was the most abundant compound, accounting for, on average, 53 % of the total concentrations. Nicotine was found in sediments at a concentration range of <LOQ to 1340 ng/g, dry wt (mean: 119 ng/g). Among the seven sampling locations studied, AAs and nicotine concentrations were the highest in sediment from Altavista wastewater lagoon in Virginia (AV, mean: 1700 ng/g) followed in descending order by Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC, mean: 807 ng/g), Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal (IHSC, mean: 698 ng/g) and New Bedford Harbor (NBH, mean: 482 ng/g). Sediments from the upper Mississippi River (MISS, mean: 63.4 ng/g) and Tittabawassee River (TBR, mean: 52.3 ng/g) contained the lowest concentrations. The RQ values for AAs in sediment ranged from 0 to 733 and that for nicotine ranged from 0 to 2060. Among AAs, the highest RQ value was found for 4-chloroaniline. Nicotine exhibited notable RQ values, which suggested risk from this chemical to aquatic organisms. This is the first study to report the occurrence of AAs in sediments and our results suggest the need for further investigations on the sources and ecological impacts of these chemicals in aquatic ecosystems.

The chemical adsorption effect of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy of nitrobenzene and aniline using the density functional theory

Nitrobenzene and Aniline are representatives of the nitro or amino compounds of benzene, mainly used in the manufacture of dyes, spices, medicines, and so on. Extensive use of Nitrobenzene and Aniline may cause pesticide residue pollution and have carcinogenic effects on organisms. In this paper, the Nitrobenzene and Aniline single molecules and their complexes with gold nanoparticles are studied theoretically by Raman spectroscopy, the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and the density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Selective binding of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to the analyte was used to study the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and the Raman activity spectra of Nitrobenzene and Aniline, as well as the Raman activity spectrum of the complexes. The most electronegative sites of Nitrobenzene and Aniline are found in the MEP and the hypothesis that these sites might be the adsorption sites of Nitrobenzene/Aniline molecules at the gold surface. At the same time, the MEP of the Nitrobenzene/Aniline complexes also prove the existence of the charge transfer effect between Nitrobenzene/Aniline and Au. The FMO energy gap of Nitrobenzene/Aniline is 0.18983 eV and 0.18953 eV, respectively, and which, after adding the Au₃ clusters, change to 0.03376 eV and 0.0797 eV, respectively, indicating that the Nitrobenzene/Aniline-Au₃ complexes have stronger chemical activities and are more prone to the charge transfer effects. The electrophilic indices of Nitrobenzene (0.17921 eV) and Aniline (0.05635 eV) are calculated and analyzed, as well as that of Nitrobenzene/Aniline-Au₃ complexes after adding the Au₃ atomic clusters, 0.80819 eV and 0.19819 eV, respectively. The obvious increasing trend in the electrophilic indices of the Nitrobenzene/Aniline-Au₃ complexes indicate their stronger biological activities and more prone to chemical reactions. The chemisorption of Nitrobenzene/Aniline and gold nanoparticles complexes is studied by the SERS, and the Raman formation of the complexes at different binding sites of Nitrobenzene/Aniline and Nitrobenzene/Aniline-Au₃ is well explained by the surface selection rule. The reason for the selective enhancement of the spectral peaks presented in the Raman activity spectrum is calculated, and the enhancement factor of the chemical enhancement due to the charge transfer effect is calculated as well. The reason for the peak offset in the SERS spectrum to the conventional Raman spectrum is explained.

Temperature mediated the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes and reoccurrence of microbial community during treating aniline wastewater

Seasonal temperature changes significantly affect microbial community diversity, composition, and performance in wastewater treatment plants. However, the community assembly mechanisms under seasonal temperature variations remain unclear. Here, we carried out temperature cycling experiments (30 °C, 35 °C, 37 °C, 40 °C, 42 °C, 45 °C, 40 °C, and 30 °C) to investigate how temperature impacts microbial performance and co-occurrence network and how assembly processes determine the structure and function of microbial communities during treating aniline wastewater. During the 195-day operation, the system achieved an efficient and stable aniline removal of 99%. Interestingly, α-diversity and network complexity were negatively correlated with temperature but could be recovered when the temperature was returned to 30 °C. The results showed that functional redundancy was probably responsible for the excellent microbial performance during the whole process. Null model analyses presented that deterministic process dominated the community when the temperature was 30 °C, and stochasticity dominated the assembly process when the temperature was over 30 °C. Overall, the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes in the treatment of aniline wastewater mediated the reoccurrence of microbial community and co-occurrence network at different temperatures. This study provides new insights into microbial community reoccurrence under seasonal temperature changes and a theoretical basis for regulating microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants.

Sustainable and effective degradation of aniline by sodium percarbonate activated with UV in aqueous solution: Kinetics, mechanism and identification of reactive species

In recent decades, sodium percarbonate (SPC) has been widely applied as a solid replacement for H₂O₂ in advanced oxidation process (AOPs). In this study, ultraviolet (UV) light was utilized for SPC activation to investigate the aniline degradation performance. The effects of SPC dosages and UV irradiation on aniline degradation were elaborated. The removal efficiency was significantly improved by increasing either the SPC dosage or UV irradiation intensity. Moreover, scavenging experiments showed that •OH, CO₃^•-, and O₂^•- were the predominant reactive species for aniline degradation. Meanwhile, the variation in the amount of •OH in the UV/SPC system was monitored, which revealed the dominant role of •OH. As a result, the mechanism of aniline degradation by the UV/SPC system was demonstrated based on confirmed free radicals. Furthermore, aniline degradation by the UV/H₂O₂ and UV/H₂O₂/Na₂CO₃ system were compared with the UV/SPC system, and an enhancement by the addition of Fe(II) in the UV/SPC system was verified. Aniline degradation was not significantly affected by the initial pH or the presence of Cl^-, SO₄^2- while NO₃^-, HCO₃^- and humid acid (HA) suppressed the reaction. In general, the UV/SPC system is a novel, green, and promising technology for aniline removal from aqueous solutions.

Effective Multi Toxic Dyes Degradation Using Bio-Fabricated Silver Nanoparticles as a Green Catalyst

Herein, we reported the preparation and characterization of silver nanoparticles from Kalanchoe brasiliensis leaves extract and their application in the photocatalytic degradation of Aniline Blue, Toludine Blue, Congo Red, Indigo Carmine, Auramine O, and Pyronin Y dyes. The synthesis of Kalanchoe brasiliensis extract derived silver nanoparticles (KK-AgNPs) was well characterized by several techniques. The surface plasma resonance (SPR) peak of 17 nm sized KK-AgNPs occurred at 445 nm, and the KK-AgNPs were stable for more than five months. Finally, KK-AgNPs were used as a green catalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of the above-mentioned dyes. Interestingly, the KK-AgNPs green catalyst decolorized all six dyes and their mixture. We found high catalytic efficiency up to 86%. Moreover, we used the KK-AgNPs green catalyst to degrade industrial dye effluent water. We also discussed the possible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

Profiles of primary aromatic amines, nicotine, and cotinine in indoor dust and associated human exposure in China

Despite the widespread use of primary aromatic amines (AAs) in consumer products, little is known about their prevalence in house dust. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of 35 AAs and two tobacco chemical markers (nicotine and its breakdown product cotinine) in 119 samples of house dust collected from five provinces in China. Ten of the 35 AAs and [nicotine and cotinine] were found in >80% and 100% of the samples, respectively, at concentration ranges of 29.1-19,200 (median: 700 ng/g) and 23.2-22,400 (4600) ng/g, respectively. Aniline was the predominant AA found in all dust samples (median: 257 ng/g). Dust samples from Henan and Shanxi provinces contained higher summed concentrations of the 10 AAs than those from Sichuan and Shandong, although the concentrations did not vary significantly among the five provinces (p > 0.05). A significant (p = 0.048), positive correlation (r = 0.882) existed between concentrations of nicotine and cotinine in dust samples. Similarly, concentrations of AAs were significantly correlated with those of nicotine in dust samples. Dyestuffs, rubber products, polyurethane foam and tobacco smoke are the major sources of AAs in the indoor environment. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) through dust ingestion ranged from 0.349 (adults) to 6.62 ng/kg-bw/day (toddlers) for AAs and from 1.27 to 51.1 ng/kg-bw/day for nicotine which are well below the current tolerable daily intakes.

Carbon source type can affect tetracycline removal by Pseudomonas sp. TC952 through regulation of extracellular polymeric substances composition and production

The objective of this work is to elucidate the mechanism of tetracycline (TC) removal by Pseudomonas sp. TC952. The TC removal characteristics of strain TC952 under various environmental conditions were studied. Results showed that the bio-removal efficiency was significantly affected by initial TC and peptone concentration, pH values, divalent metal ion (Zn²⁺) and carbon source, and the strain TC952 efficiently removed approximately 72.8% of TC within 6 days with 10 g/L peptone. The best conditions for strain TC952 to remove TC are as follows: initial TC concentration is 50 mg/L, solution initial pH is 7, Zn²⁺ concentration is 0.1 μg/L, carbon source is peptone. And through intra- and extracellular fractions assay and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) component analysis, TC removal by strain TC952 was mainly attributed to the adsorption by bacterial EPS and bacterial cell. Furthermore, different carbon source affected the EPS production content and component of strain TC952, so EPS produced under peptone and serine conditions could bio-adsorb TC and formed a buffer area outside the cells, thus reducing or preventing TC from entering the bacteria cells. All the results obtained showed that secretion of EPS and adsorption of TC by EPS and bacterial cell wall may be a common way for bacteria to reduce TC in the environment, which brought novel insights for better management of TC contamination by functional bacteria and for understanding the natural removal process of antibiotics by microorganisms in the environment.

CQDs/ZnO composites based on waste rice noodles: preparation and photocatalytic capability

To provide a low-cost photocatalyst and new methodology for the utilization of waste rice noodle (WRN), a carbon quantum dots/zinc oxide (CQDs/ZnO) composite using WRN as the raw material was synthesized and characterized. The CQDs/ZnO composite based on WRN exhibited a highly efficient photocatalytic degradation effect on various organic pollutants and could be a good alternative for commercial ZnO. For methylene blue, the CQDs/ZnO composite showed a good degradation rate of 99.58% within 40 min, a high degradation rate constant of 0.2630 min⁻¹, and could be recycled and reused for ten photocatalytic cycles without an appreciable decrease in the degradation effect, which was much better than that of commercial ZnO. The resulting CQDs/ZnO composite also displayed a nice photocatalytic degradation effect on other common organic pollutants, such as malachite green, methyl violet, basic fuchsin, rhodamine B, aniline and tetracycline. In particular, it could achieve excellent photocatalytic degradation on malachite green with an extremely high degradation rate constant of 1.9260 min⁻¹. Besides, the CQDs/ZnO composite could also be used to control the pollution of tetracycline or aniline. The introduction of CQDs based on WRN to ZnO resulted in efficient electron–hole pair separation and enabled more photogenerated electrons to reduce O₂ and more photogenerated holes to oxidize H₂O, which caused stronger abilities in producing radicals (such as O₂˙⁻ and ˙OH) and a better photocatalytic degradation effect to organic pollutants.

Biodegradation mechanism of chloramphenicol by Aeromonas media SZW3 and genome analysis

The overuse of chloramphenicol (CAP) due to its low price is detrimental to ecological safety and human health. An earthworm gut content dwelling bacterium, Aeromonas media SZW3, was isolated with capability of CAP biodegradation, and the CAP degradation efficiency reached 55.86% at day 1 and 67.28% at day 6. CAP biodegradation kinetics and characteristic of strain SZW3 determined the factors that affect CAP biodegradation. Thirteen possible biodegradation products were identified, including three novel biodegradation products (CP1, CP2 and CP3), and three potential biodegradation pathway were proposed. Biodegradation reactions include amide bond hydrolysis, nitro group reduction, acetylation, aminoacetylation, dechlorination and oxidation. Genome analysis suggested that the coding gene of RarD (CAP resistance permease), CAP O-acetyltransferase, nitroreductase and haloalkane dehalogenase may be responsible for CAP biodegradation. The proposed complete biodegradation pathway and genome analysis by strain SZW3 provide us new insight of the transformation route and fate of CAP in the environment.

Primary aromatic amines in indoor dust from 10 countries and associated human exposure

Although primary aromatic amines (AAs) are widely used in consumer products, little is known about their occurrence in indoor dust. A liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was applied for the determination of 29 AAs and two tobacco smoke markers (nicotine and cotinine) in 256 house dust samples collected from 10 countries. Of the 29 AAs analyzed, p-anisidine, o-anisidine, 2,6-dimethylaniline (2,6-DMA), p-cresidine (p-CD), p-toluidine (p-TD), 4,4'-methylenedianiline (4,4'-MDA), ortho/meta-toluidine (o/m-TD), 4-chloroaniline (4-CA), 2,4-diaminotoluene (2,4-DAT), aniline, and 2-naphthylamine (2-NA) as well as nicotine and cotinine, were found prevalent in house dust samples. Sum median concentrations of AAs and tobacco smoke markers varied from 29.6 to 576 ng/g (overall median: 200 ng/g) and 10.8 to 2920 ng/g (415 ng/g), respectively. Among AAs, aniline was the abundant contaminant, found at median concentrations ranging from 19.6 ng/g (Colombia) to 334 ng/g (South Korea). Nicotine was detected in all indoor samples at median concentrations ranging from 9.92 ng/g (Colombia) to 2790 ng/g (India) ng/g. Concentrations of AAs in indoor dust were significantly correlated with those of nicotine. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of select AAs through the ingestion of house dust was in the range of 0.019-3.03 ng/kg-bw/day, which was five orders of magnitude below the tolerance limits.

A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the analysis of primary aromatic amines in human urine

Aromatic amines are widely used in personal care products and human exposure to this class of chemicals is widespread. Bioanalytical methods to determine trace levels of aromatic amines in human urine are scarce. In this study, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed to determine 39 primary aromatic amines (AAs) along with nicotine and cotinine in human urine. Chromatographic separation of the 41 analytes was achieved on an Ultra Biphenyl (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 5 µm) column. Mass spectrometry was operated in electrospray ionization positive ion multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The method exhibited excellent linear dynamic range (0.1-50 ng/mL) with correlation coefficients (r) > 0.999 for all analytes. Urine samples (2 mL) were hydrolyzed using 10 M NaOH at 95 °C for 15 h and target analytes were extracted using methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Addition of 15 µL of 0.25 M HCl to the sample extracts improved the recoveries of several target analytes. The method was validated through the analysis of fortified quality control (QC) samples and a certified standard reference material (SRM). Relative recoveries (%) of target analytes fortified in QC samples were in the range of 75-114% for 37 of the 41 analytes while the other analytes exhibited lower recoveries (16-74%). The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) of target analytes were in the range of 0.025-0.20 ng/mL and 0.1-1.0 ng/mL, respectively. Intra-day and inter-day precision of the method assessed through the analysis of fortified urine QC samples at three different concentrations were < 11.7% and < 15.9% (measured as RSD), respectively. The method was applied in the analysis of urine samples from the general population and known smokers; aniline, para-anisidine, para-toluidine, ortho/meta-toluidine, 3-chloroaniline, 4-chloroaniline, 3,4-dichloroaniline, and 4,4'-methylenedianiline were found in all smoker's urine at sum concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 9.16 ng/mL.

A novel inhibition mechanism of aniline on nitrification: Aniline degradation competes dissolved oxygen with nitrification

Aniline is a toxic aromatic amine and an inhibitor of nitrification. This study explored the inhibition effect and underlying mechanism. After sludge acclimation, 540 mg/L aniline was removed in 24 h and almost all ammonia released from aniline was oxidized to nitrate. However, nitrification never started until no aniline left. The cellular adenosine triphosphate (cATP) concentration of acclimated sludge reduced only by 2% after aniline exposure. Neither transmembrane transport of ammonia nor ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) activity was affected by aniline. Growing initial aniline concentration did not deteriorate the specific nitrification rate (NR). These all revealed that the toxicity of aniline only play a minor role in inhibition. Competition for dissolved oxygen (DO) was proposed to be another possible inhibition mechanism. The oxygen affinity constant (Ks) of aniline degraders and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was calculated to be 0.894 mg/L and 1.274 mg/L respectively, suggesting the former possessed much stronger oxygen affinity (P < 0.01). With aniline and ammonium as initial substrates, increasing aeration intensity advanced nitrification and increased the NR. Max NR of 0.63 mgN/(gMLSS·h) was achieved at the highest aeration intensity of 1000 mL/min. This study brings one step closer to better removal of aniline and derived nitrogen pollutants.

Phytoremediation of aniline by Salix babylonica cuttings: Removal, accumulation, and photosynthetic response

Aniline, a synthetic compound widely used in industrial and pesticide production, is a potential environmental pollutant. The removal of aniline is extremely important to minimize threats to human health and the surrounding environment. The objectives of this study were to investigate the removal efficiency and physiological response of Salix. babylonica cuttings to aniline pollution. Photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, spectral reflectance and the concentration of aniline in leaves, stems and roots were analysed. The experiment showed that S. babylonica has a strong removal effect on aniline wastewater. Cuttings from S. babylonica stems and roots played an important role in accumulating aniline. However, this increase in aniline concentration was dose dependent and was not always linear. With increasing aniline concentration in S. babylonica was increasingly stressed, with negative impacts on photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance index in S. babylonica leaves. These results indicate that non-stomatal limitations are the main reason for the reduction in Pn in S. babylonica leaves due to chlorophyll structure destruction under aniline stress. In addition, aniline concentrations result in an unbalanced distribution of excitation energy between the two light systems, thereby hindering photosynthetic electron transfer and restricting the efficient operation of photosynthesis. Salix babylonica can endure moderate concentrations of aniline and has potential for the phyto-management of aniline-polluted wastewater, although further studies are needed using polluted wastewater.

Degradation of aniline in water with gaseous streamer corona plasma

This paper demonstrated the effects and influencing factors in degrading aniline by gaseous streamer corona plasma along water surface under different discharging gas atmospheres. For aniline with an initial concentration of 100 mg l^-1, the degradation was fastest when the reactor was not ventilated, and the degradation rate is 98.5% under 7.5 min treatment. While the degradation was slowest when Ar was ventilated, the degradation rate is 98.6% after treatment for 60 min. Some active particles were detected using a multi-channel fibre-optic spectrometer during the discharge, such as Ar, OH, N₂, N 2 + and N. In particular, NO was detected during air discharge. The NO and N 2 + could produce NO 3 - ; then generated nitric acid would affect the pH value of the solution. The intermediate product by N₂ discharge is nitrophenol, and nitrophenol would be converted to p-benzoquinone. The O₂ discharge could produce an intermediate product of aminophenol. The intermediate products in Ar discharge were in small amounts and the final mineralization effect was the best.

Salinity relief aniline induced oxidative stress in Suaeda salsa: Activities of antioxidative enzyme and EPR measurements

Wastewater from printing and dyeing processes often contains aniline and high salinity, which are hazardous to aquatic species. Glycophytic plants cannot survive under high-salinity conditions, whereas halophytes grow well in such an environment. In this study, we investigated the influence of NaCl on the antioxidant level in Suaeda salsa affected by aniline stress. The seedlings showed various growth toxicity effects under different concentrations of aniline. The results showed that the effect of the aniline was more severe for the root growth compared to that for the shoot growth. Aniline exposure significantly increased the total free radicals and ·OH radicals in the plants. Suaeda salsa exposure to aniline caused oxidative stress by altering the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) activity, which resulted in the overproduction of H₂O₂ and the inducement of lipid peroxidation. Analysis revealed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was enhanced after aniline exposure and that the chlorophyll content was significantly decreased. The results showed that aniline induced the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and changed the antioxidant defense system. This ultimately resulted in oxidative damage in S. salsa; however, it was found that moderate salinity could mitigate the effects. In conclusion, salinity may alleviate the growth inhibition caused by aniline by regulating the antioxidant capacity of S. salsa.

Fe and Cu co-doped graphitic carbon nitride as an eco-friendly photo-assisted catalyst for aniline degradation

A novel bimetallic coordinated g-C₃N₄ with Fe₂O₃ composite catalyst (FeCu-g-C₃N₄) was synthesized by simple calcination of Fe³⁺/Cu²⁺/melamine precursor. Its catalytic performance was analyzed via photodegrading aniline. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the composition and structure of the catalysts. Results indicated that Fe mainly distributed in the Fe(III)-N coordination form and partly in Fe₂O₃ lattice, and Cu inserted at the interstitial positions of g-C₃N₄ in the Cu(I)-N form. The great optical property was also proved by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and photocurrent responses. The heterogeneous photo-assisted catalyst exhibited excellent performance in activation of H₂O₂, resulting in 80% decomposition of aniline with low metal leaching in 6 h. The incorporation of Cu elevated the performance of degradation compared to that only iron doped. A synergistic catalytic effect between solid Cu(I) and Fe(III) accelerated the reduction of Fe(III). The ·OH and ¹O₂ were confirmed as major reactive oxygen species (ROS) identified by scavenging experiments and ESR, and e^- was the most essential since it not only led to the generation of ROS but also participated in the circulation of Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺/Cu⁺, and Fe³⁺/Cu⁺. Furthermore, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed based on the analysis.
