The role of iron materials in the abiotic transformation and biotransformation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), widely used as flame retardants, easily enter the environment, thus posing environmental and health risks. Iron materials play a key role during the migration and transformation of PBDEs. This article reviews the processes and mechanisms of adsorption, degradation, and biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs affected by iron materials in the environment. Iron materials can effectively adsorb PBDEs through hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen/halogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, coordination interactions, and pore filling interactions. In addition, they are beneficial for the photodegradation, reduction debromination, and advanced oxidation degradation and debromination of PBDEs. The iron material-microorganism coupling technology affects the uptake and transformation of PBDEs. In addition, iron materials can reduce the uptake of PBDEs in plants, affecting their bioavailability. The species, concentration, and size of iron materials affect plant physiology. Overall, iron materials play a bidirectional role in the biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs. It is necessary to strengthen the positive role of iron materials in reducing the environmental and health risks caused by PBDEs. This article provides innovative ideas for the rational use of iron materials in controlling the migration and transformation of PBDEs in the environment.

Abiotic degradations of legacy and novel flame retardants in environmental and food matrices - a review

Flame retardants (FRs) are commonly added to commercial products to achieve flammability resistance. Since most of them are not chemically bonded to the materials, they could be leached to the environment during the production and disposal cycle. These FRs were categorised based on their chemical nature, including brominated, organophosphorus-, mineral- and nitrogen-based. This review summarised the abiotic degradation reactions of these four classes of FRs, with a focus on thermal and photodegradation reactions in environmental and food matrices. Only 24 papers have reported related information on abiotic degradation reactions that could be useful for predicting possible degradation pathways, and most focused on brominated FRs. Most studies also investigated the thermal degradation of FRs under high temperatures (>400 °C), which exceeds the normal cooking temperature at 100-300 °C. For photodegradation, studies have used up to five times the energy typically used in UV radiation during food processing. It is recommended that future studies investigate the fate of these FRs in foods under more realistic processing conditions, to provide a more comprehensive picture of the estimated consumption of FRs and their degradation products from foods, and facilitate a better risk assessment of the use of these novel FRs.

Modified nano zero-valent iron coupling microorganisms to degrade BDE-209: Degradation pathways and microbial responses

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil and groundwater have garnered considerable attention owing to the significant bioaccumulation potential and toxicity. Currently, the coupling treatment method of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) with dehalogenation microorganisms is a research hotspot in the field of PBDE degradation. In this study, various systems were established within anaerobic environments, including the nZVI-only system, microorganism-only system, and the nZVI + microorganisms system. The aim was to investigate the degradation pathway of BDE-209 and elucidate the degradation mechanism within the coupled system. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of the coupled system was better than that of the nZVI-only or microorganism-only system. Two modified nZVI (carboxymethyl cellulose and polyacrylamide) were prepared to improve the coupling degradation efficiency. CMC-nZVI showed the highest stability, and the coupled system consisting of microorganisms and CMC-nZVI showed the best degradation effect among all of the systems in this study, reaching 89.53% within 30 days. Furthermore, 22 intermediate products were detected in the coupling systems. Notably, changing the inoculation time did not significantly improve the degradation effect. The expression changes of the two reductive dehalogenase genes, e.g. TceA and Vcr, reflected the stress response and self-recovery ability of the dehalogenating bacteria, indicating such genes can be used as biomarker for evaluating the degradation performance of the coupling system. These findings provide a better understanding about the mechanism of coupling debromination process and the direction for the optimization and on-site repair of coupled systems.

Decolorization and degradation of various dyes and dye-containing wastewater treatment by electron beam radiation technology: An overview

The treatment of dye-containing wastewater generated from textile industries is still a challenge, and various technologies, including physical, chemical and biological ones have been used. In recent years, the ionizing radiation (usually including gamma ray generated by radionuclide, such as 60Co and 137Cs, and electron beam generated by electron accelerator) technology has received increasing attention for degrading refractory or toxic organic pollutants in wastewater because of its unique advantages, such as no chemical additives, fast reaction rate, strong degradation capacity, high efficiency, flexibility, controllability. Compared to the conventional wastewater treatment processes, ionizing radiation technology, as a disruptive wastewater treatment technology, is more efficient for the decolorization and degradation of dyes and the treatment of dye-containing wastewater. In this paper, the recent advances in the treatment of dye-containing wastewater by ionizing radiation, in particular by electron beam (EB) radiation were summarized and analyzed, focusing on the decolorization and degradation of various dyes. Firstly, the formation of various reactive species induced by radiation and their interactions with dye molecules, as well as the influencing factors on the removal efficiency of dyes were discussed. Secondly, the researches on the treating dye-containing wastewater by electron beam radiation technology were systematically reviewed. Then, the decolorization and degradation mechanisms by electron beam radiation were further discussed in detail. And the integrated processes that would contribute to the advancement of this technology in practical applications were examined. More importantly, the recent advances of electron beam radiation technology from laboratory to application were reviewed, especially successful operation of dye-containing wastewater treatment facilities in China. And eventually, current challenges, future research directions, and outlooks of electron beam radiation technology were proposed for further advancing this technology for the sustainable development of water resources.

20 years of polybrominated diphenyl ethers on toxicity assessments

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) serve as brominated flame retardants which continue to receive considerable attention because of their persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential toxicity. Although PBDEs have been restricted and phased out, large amounts of commercial products containing PBDEs are still in use and discarded annually. Consequently, PBDEs added to products can be released into our surrounding environments, particularly in aquatic systems, thus posing great risks to human health. Many studies and reviews have described the possible toxic effects of PBDEs, while few studies have comprehensively summarized and analyzed the global trends of their toxicity assessment. Therefore, this study utilizes bibliometrics to evaluate the worldwide scientific output of PBDE toxicity and analyze the hotspots and future trends of this field. Firstly, the basic information including the most contributing countries/institutions, journals, co-citations, influential authors, and keywords involved in PBDE toxicity assessment will be visualized. Subsequently, the potential toxicity of PBDE exposure to diverse systems, such as endocrine, reproductive, neural, and gastrointestinal tract systems, and related toxic mechanisms will be discussed. Finally, we conclude this review by outlining the current challenges and future perspectives in environmentally relevant PBDE exposure, potential carriers for PBDE transport, the fate of PBDEs in the environment and human bodies, advanced stem cell-derived organoid models for toxicity assessment, and promising omics technologies for obtaining toxic mechanisms. This review is expected to offer systematical insights into PBDE toxicity assessments and facilitate the development of PBDE-based research.

Update of the risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in food

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in food, focusing on 10 congeners: BDE-28, -47, -49, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183 and ‑209. The CONTAM Panel concluded that the neurodevelopmental effects on behaviour and reproductive/developmental effects are the critical effects in rodent studies. For four congeners (BDE-47, -99, -153, -209) the Panel derived Reference Points, i.e. benchmark doses and corresponding lower 95% confidence limits (BMDLs), for endpoint-specific benchmark responses. Since repeated exposure to PBDEs results in accumulation of these chemicals in the body, the Panel estimated the body burden at the BMDL in rodents, and the chronic intake that would lead to the same body burden in humans. For the remaining six congeners no studies were available to identify Reference Points. The Panel concluded that there is scientific basis for inclusion of all 10 congeners in a common assessment group and performed a combined risk assessment. The Panel concluded that the combined margin of exposure (MOET) approach was the most appropriate risk metric and applied a tiered approach to the risk characterisation. Over 84,000 analytical results for the 10 congeners in food were used to estimate the exposure across dietary surveys and age groups of the European population. The most important contributors to the chronic dietary Lower Bound exposure to PBDEs were meat and meat products and fish and seafood. Taking into account the uncertainties affecting the assessment, the Panel concluded that it is likely that current dietary exposure to PBDEs in the European population raises a health concern.

A critical review on BDE-209: Source, distribution, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation

As the most widely used polybrominated diphenyl ether, BDE-209 is commonly used in polymer-based commercial and household products. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, BDE-209 is ubiquitous in a variety of environmental compartments and can be exposed to organisms in various ways and cause toxic effects. The present review outlines the current state of knowledge on the occurrence of BDE-209 in the environment, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation. BDE-209 has been detected in various environmental matrices including air, soil, water, and sediment. Additionally, environmental factors such as organic matter, total suspended particulate, hydrodynamic, wind, and temperature affecting BDE-209 are specifically discussed. Toxicity studies suggest BDE-209 may cause systemic toxic effects on living organisms, reproductive toxicity, embryo-fetal toxicity, genetic toxicity, endocrine toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, or even be carcinogenic. BDE-209 has toxic effects on organisms mainly through epigenetic regulation and induction of oxidative stress. Evidence regarding the degradation of BDE-209, including biodegradation, photodegradation, Fenton degradation, zero-valent iron degradation, chemical oxidative degradation, and microwave radiation degradation is summarized. This review may contribute to assessing the environmental risks of BDE-209 to help develop rational management plans.

A review of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and novel brominated flame retardants in Chinese aquatic environment: Source, occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment

Due to the widespread commercial production and use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in China, their potential impact on human health development should not be underestimated. This review searched the literature on Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and Novel brominated flame retardant (PBDEs and NBFRs) (broad BFRs) in the aquatic environment (including surface water and sediment) in China over the last decade. It was found that PBDEs and NBFRs entered the aquatic environment through four main pathways, atmospheric deposition, surface runoff, sewage effluent and microplastic decomposition. The distribution of PBDEs and NBFRs in the aquatic environment was highly correlated with the local economic structure and population density. In addition, a preliminary risk assessment of existing PBDEs and PBDEs in sediments showed that areas with high-risk quotient values were always located in coastal areas with e-waste dismantling sites, which was mainly attributed to the historical legacy of electronic waste. This research provides help for the human health development and regional risk planning management posed by PBDEs and NBFRs.

Degradation of sulfanilamide in aqueous solution by ionizing radiation: Performance and mechanism

Sulfonamide (SA) is an emerging contaminants and the efficient treatment of SA containing wastewater remains a challenge. Herein, SA degradation by gamma irradiation has been systematacially studied. SA (10 mg/L) could be totally removed with 1.5 kGy irradiation. Quenching experiments demonstrated that •OH and eaq- were the predominant for SA degradation. SA degradation was reduced with initial concentration increasing, and the removal was faster with pH increasing in the range of 3.1-10.8. The coexisting matters affected SA degradation through changing reactive species, and the introduction of SO42- and Cl- enhanced SA degradation, while CO32- had a negative impact on SA degradation, and the degradation was insignificantly affected when adding humic acid. Gamma irradiation could remain effective in real water matrixes. In conjunction with LC-MS analysis and DFT calculation, possible degradation pathways for SA were proposed. Gamma irradiation could reduce the toxicity of SA, while several byproducts with more toxic were also formed. Furthermore, gamma/priodate (PI) process was promising to enhance SA degradation and mineralization. k value increased by 1.85 times, and mineralization rate increased from 19.51% to 79.19% when adding PI. This study suggested that ionizing radiation was efficient to eliminate SA in wastewater.

Study on the Biomolecular Competitive Mechanism of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Their Derivatives on Thyroid Hormones

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used brominated flame retardants. PBDEs and their derivatives, hydroxylated PBDEs (OH-PBDEs), can bind to hormone receptors and impact hormone secretion, transportation, and metabolism, leading to endocrine disruption and the development of various diseases. They have particularly strong interference effects on thyroid hormones. This study used decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209); 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47); and 6-OH-BDE-47 as representative compounds of PBDEs and their derivatives, OH-PBDEs. A fluorescence probe, fluorescein-isothiocyanate-L-thyroxine (FITC-T4, F-T4), specific for binding to transthyretin (TTR), a thyroid transport protein, was prepared. The binding capacity of PBDEs and their derivatives, OH-PBDEs, to TTR was quantitatively measured using fluorescence spectroscopy. The principle of quenching the fluorescence intensity of F-T4 after binding to TTR was used to analyze the competitive interaction between the probe and BDE-209, BDE-47, and 6-OH-BDE-47, thereby evaluating the toxic effects of PBDEs and their derivatives on the thyroid system. Additionally, AutoDock molecular docking software (1.5.6) was used to further analyze the interference mechanism of OH-PBDEs on T4. The results of the study are as follows: (1) Different types of PBDEs and OH-PBDEs exhibit varying degrees of interference with T4. Both the degree of bromination and hydroxylation affect their ability to competitively bind to TTR. Higher bromination and hydroxylation degrees result in stronger competitive substitution. (2) The competitive substitution ability of the same disruptor varies at different concentrations. Higher concentrations lead to stronger substitution ability, but there is a threshold beyond which the substitution ability no longer increases. (3) When OH-PBDEs have four or more bromine atoms and exhibit the most structural similarity to T4, their binding affinity to TTR is stronger than that of T4.

Liquid crystal monomers in ventilation and air conditioning dust: Indoor characteristics, sources analysis and toxicity assessment

Indoor dust contaminated with liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) released from various commercial liquid crystal display (LCD) screens may pose environmental health risks to humans. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of 64 LCMs in ventilation and air conditioning filters (VACF) dust, characterize their composition profiles, potential sources, and associations with indoor characteristics, and assess their in vitro toxicity using the human lung bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B). A total of 31 LCMs with concentrations (ΣLCMs) ranging from 43.7 ng/g to 448 ng/g were detected in the collected VACF dust. Additional analysis revealed the potential interactions between indoor environmental conditions and human exposure risks associated with the detected LCMs in VACF dust. The service area and working time of the ventilation and air conditioning system, and the number of indoor LCD screens were positively correlated with the fluorinated ΣLCMs in VACF dust (r = 0.355 ∼ 0.511, p < 0.05), while the associations with the non-fluorinated ΣLCMs were not found (p > 0.05), suggesting different environmental behavior and fates of fluorinated and non-fluorinated LCMs in the indoor environment. Four main indoor sources of LCMs (i.e., computer (37.1%), television (28.3%), Brand A smartphone (21.2%) and Brand S smartphone (13.4%)) were identified by positive matrix factorization-multiple linear regression (PMF-MLR). Exposure to 14 relatively frequently detected LCMs, individually and in the mixture, induced significant oxidative stress in BEAS-2B cells. Among them, non-fluorinated LCMs, specifically 3cH2B and MeP3bcH, caused dominant decreased cell viability. This study provides new insights into the indoor LCMs pollution and the associated potential health risks due to the daily use of electronic devices.

Simultaneous adsorption of ciprofloxacin and Cu2+ using Fe and N co-doped biochar: Competition and selective separation

The treatment of combined antibiotics and heavy metals pollution is a critical challenge. Herein, iron and nitrogen co-doped biochar (Fe/N-BC) was synthesized using rape straw as precursor, and applied for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Cu2+ in single and binary systems. The qmax for CIP and Cu2+ were 46.45 mg g-1 and 30.77 mg g-1, respectively. Adsorption decreased in a binary matrix, indicating that there was a competitive effect between CIP and Cu2+, which might be due to CIP and Cu2+ sharing similar active adsorption sites on Fe/N-BC. Interestingly, CIP and Cu2+ co-adsorption was a pH-dependent process. Fe/N-BC has potential to highly selectively separate CIP/Cu2+ from mixed solutions through adjusting pH values. Furthermore, adsorption mechanisms were systematically investigated in this research. This research could help to provide a deeper understanding of the synchronously removing specific antibiotics and heavy metals by biochar adsorbents.

Mechanochemical debromination of allyl 2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (TBP-AE): optimization of the operational conditions

Allyl 2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (TBP-AE) is a flame retardant that is added to plastics to improve their fire resistance. This kind of additive is hazardous to both human health and the environment. As any other BFRs, TBP-AE resists photo-degradation in the environment and hence materials laden with TBP-AE are to be dibrominated to avoid environmental pollution. Mechanochemical degradation of TBP-AE is a promising approach with potential industrial applications since it does not require high temperatures nor it generates any secondary pollutants. A planetary ball milling simulation experiment was designed to study TBP-AE's mechanochemical debromination. To report products from the mechanochemical process, a variety of characterization techniques were used. The characterization methods included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The effects of various co-milling reagent types, co-milling reagent concentrations with raw material, time, and revolution speed on mechanochemical debromination efficiency have been thoroughly investigated. The Fe/Al2O3 mixture entails the highest debromination efficiency of 23%. However, when using a Fe/Al2O3 mixture, neither the reagent concentration nor the revolution speed influenced the debromination efficiency. In case of using only Al2O3, the next viable reagent, it was revealed that while increasing the revolution, speed improved debromination efficiency to a certain point, and increasing it any further left the debromination efficiency unchanged. In addition, the results showed that an equal mass ratio of TBP-AE to Al2O3 promoted degradation more than an increase in the ratio of Al2O3 to TBP-AE. The addition of ABS polymer largely inhibits the reaction between Al2O3 and TBP-AE, which hindered alumina's ability to capture organic bromine, causing a significant decrease in the debromination efficiency when model of waste printed circuit board (WPCB) is considered.

Narrative of hazardous chemicals in water: Its potential removal approach and health effects

H₂O is essential for life to exist on earth; it is important to guarantee both the quality and supply of water to satisfy world demand. However, it became contaminated by a number of hazardous, inorganic industrial pollutants, which caused a number of issues like irrigation activities and unsafe human ingestion. Long-term exposure to harmful substances can result in respiratory, immunological, and neurological illnesses, cancer, and problems during pregnancy. Therefore, removing hazardous substances from wastewater and natural water sources is crucial. It is necessary to develop an alternate method that can effectively remove these toxins from water bodies, as conventional methods have several drawbacks. This review primarily aims to achieve the following goals: 1) to discuss the distribution of harmful chemicals: 2) to give specifics on numerous possible strategies for getting rid of hazardous chemicals, and 3) its effects on the environment and consequences for human health have been examined.

Comparison of photocatalysis and photolysis of 2,2,4,4-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47): Operational parameters, kinetic studies, and data validation using three modern machine learning models

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are halogenated organic compounds that are among the major pollutants of water, and there is an urgent need for their removal. This work compared the application of two techniques, i.e., photocatalytic reaction (PCR) and photolysis (PL), for 2,2,4,4- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) degradation. Although a limited degradation of BDE-47 was observed by photolysis (LED/N₂), photocatalytic oxidation by using TiO₂/LED/N₂ proved to be effective in the degradation of BDE-47. The use of a photocatalyst enhanced the extent of BDE-47 degradation by around 10% at optimum conditions in anaerobic systems. Experimental results were systematically validated through modeling with three new and powerful Machine Learning (ML) approaches, including Gradient Boosted Decision Tree (GBDT), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Symbolic Regression (SBR). Four statistical criteria (Coefficient of Determination (R²), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Average Relative Error (ARER), and Absolute Error (ABER)) were calculated for model validation. Among the applied models, the developed GBDT was the desirable model for predicting the remaining concentration (Ce) of BDE-47 for both processes. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) results confirmed that BDE-47 mineralization required additional time than its degradation in both PCR and PL systems. The kinetic study demonstrated that BDE-47 degradation for both processes followed the pseudo-first-order form of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) model. More importantly, the calculated electrical energy consumption of photolysis was shown to be ten percent higher than that for photocatalysis, possibly due to the higher irradiation time required in direct photolysis, which in turn increases electricity consumption. This study is useful in proposing a feasible and promising treatment process for the degradation of BDE-47.

Enhancement of Fenton processes at initial circumneutral pH for the degradation of norfloxacin with Fe@FeS core-shell nanowires

The disadvantages of narrow working pH range (2.5-4.0), accumulation of iron sludge and incomplete degradation have hindered the practical application of the traditional homogeneous Fenton technique. In this research, Fe@FeS core-shell nanowires were synthesised and the innovative Fe@FeS/Fe2+/H2O2 system was adopted for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation at an initial circumneutral pH. More than 95% NOR has been removed in the Fe@FeS/Fe2+/H2O2 system within 30 min at pH 7. After investigating the concentration change of total iron, Fe2+ and H2O2 during the degradation process, NOR degradation in the Fe@FeS/Fe2+/H2O2 system might be attributed to the combined effect of homogeneous Fenton reaction and heterogeneous Fenton process. Besides that, the added Fe@FeS has accelerated Fe3+/Fe2+ redox cycle with extremely high degree. The generated reactive ●OH has been identified by electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer results, possible degradation intermediates have also been proposed according to Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis results. Moreover, Fe@FeS core-shell nanowires showed excellent reusability, it is a promising heterogeneous Fenton catalyst that is applicable for practical application.

Degradation efficiency and mechanism of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) by thermally activated persulfate system

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as a typical brominated flame retardant (BFR) have attracted worldwide attention due to the high environmental risk and resistance to conventional remediation processes. In this study, thermally activated persulfate (TAP) process was applied to degrade 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), which is the most toxic and representative PBDEs in e-waste dismantling sites. Impact factors such as PDS dosage, heating temperature, and initial pH were evaluated. Results showed that BDE-47 can be 100% degraded within 180 min under the condition of PDS:BDE-47 = 1000:1, 60 °C, and pH = 7. Quenching experiments combined with EPR analysis further proved the important role of SO₄^·- in oxidating BDE-47. According to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis, only one oxidation product of low toxicity was detected during the oxidation process. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the oxidation process mainly involved radical attack at C-Br bond, cleavage of C-Br bond, and fission of ether bond, and HSO₄· may also play an important role in BDE-47 degradation in TAP system. In addition, TAP system exhibited universality as all selected PBDE congeners can be degraded, and the degradation rate of PBDEs was greatly affected by the number of substituted Br atoms in a negative trend. Overall, these findings indicate that TAP can be applied as an effective method for removal of PBDEs, and we provide a new insight for the practical application of TAP technology in BDE-47 degradation from experimental and theoretical aspects.

Detection and removal technologies for ammonium and antibiotics in agricultural wastewater: Recent advances and prospective

With the extensive development of industrial livestock and poultry production, a considerable part of agricultural wastewater containing tremendous ammonium and antibiotics have been indiscriminately released into the aquatic systems, causing serious harms to ecosystem and human health. In this review, ammonium detection technologies, including spectroscopy and fluorescence methods, and sensors were systematically summarized. Antibiotics analysis methodologies were critically reviewed, including chromatographic methods coupled with mass spectrometry, electrochemical sensors, fluorescence sensors, and biosensors. Current progress in remediation methods for ammonium removal were discussed and analyzed, including chemical precipitation, breakpoint chlorination, air stripping, reverse osmosis, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biological methods. Antibiotics removal approaches were comprehensively reviewed, including physical, AOPs, and biological processes. Furthermore, the simultaneous removal strategies for ammonium and antibiotics were reviewed and discussed, including physical adsorption processes, AOPs, biological processes. Finally, research gaps and the future perspectives were discussed. Through conducting comprehensive review, future research priorities include: (1) to improve the stabilities and adaptabilities of detection and analysis techniques for ammonium and antibiotics, (2) to develop innovative, efficient, and low cost approaches for simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics, and (3) to explore the underlying mechanisms that governs the simultaneous removal of ammonium and antibiotics. This review could facilitate the evolution of innovative and efficient technologies for ammonium and antibiotics treatment in agricultural wastewater.

Hydrogen-Donor-Controlled Polybrominated Dibenzofuran (PBDF) Formation from Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE) Photolysis in Solutions: Competition Mechanisms of Radical-Based Cyclization and Hydrogen Abstraction Reactions

Polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) are characteristic dioxin-like products of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) photolysis. In this study, competition mechanisms of radical-based cyclization and hydrogen abstraction reactions are proposed in PBDF formation. Commonly, the ortho C-Br bond dissociation during photolysis generates aryl radicals, which undergo intramolecular cyclization to form PBDFs or hydrogen abstraction with hydrogen donors (such as organic solvents and water) to form lower brominated PBDEs. By using 2,4,4'-tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE-28) as the model reactant, the experimental PBDF formation ratios in various solutions are explained quantitatively by the calculated rate constants of cyclization and hydrogen abstraction reactions using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The solvent effect of pure and mixed solvents on PBDF formation is illustrated successfully. The structure-related hydrogen donation ability for hydrogen abstraction controls the bias of competition reactions and influences PBDF formation. Water resulted to be the most significant generation of PBDFs. Fulvic and humic acid display higher hydrogen donation ability than small-molecule organics due to the partitioning effect in aqueous solution. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models of the calculated rate constants for 512 cyclization and 319 hydrogen abstraction reactions using 189 PBDEs as the initial reactants in water are established, revealing the high risk of PBDF formation in aqueous solution.

Chemical reductive technologies for the debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers: A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as brominated flame retardants, which had attracted amounts of attention due to their harmful characteristics of high toxicity, environmental persistence and potential bioaccumulation. Many chemical reductive debromination technologies have been developed for the debromination of PBDEs, including photolysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, zero-valent metal reduction, chemically catalytic reduction and mechanochemical method. This review aims to provide information about the degradation thermodynamics and kinetics of PBDEs and summarize the degradation mechanisms in various systems. According to the comparative analysis, the rapid debromination to generate bromine-free products in an electron-transfer process, of which photocatalysis is a representative one, is found to be relatively difficult, because the degradation rate of PBDEs depended on the Br-rich phenyl ring with the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) localization. On the contrary, the complete debromination occurs easily in other systems with active hydrogen atoms as the main reactive species, such as chemically catalytic reduction systems. The review provides the knowledge on the chemical reductive technique of PBDEs, which would greatly help not only clarify the degradation mechanism but also design the more efficient system for the rapid and deep debromination of PBDEs in the future.

Remediation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers contaminated soil in the e-waste disposal site by ball milling modified zero valent iron activated persulfate

Hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in e-waste disposal sites are difficult to remove effectively. There is little reported about zero valent iron (ZVI) coupled with persulfate (PS) to achieve the removal of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) from soil. In this work, we have prepared the flake submicron zero valent iron by ball milling with boric acid (B-mZVI^bm) at a low cost. Sacrifice experiments results showed that 56.6% of BDE209 was removed in 72 h with PS/B-mZVI^bm, which was 2.12 times than that of micron zero valent iron (mZVI). The morphology, crystal form, atomic valence, composition, and functional group of B-mZVI^bm were determined by SEM, XRD, XPS, and FTIR, and the results indicated that the oxide layer on the surface of mZVI is replaced by borides. The results of EPR indicated that hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical played the dominant role in the degradation of BDE209. The degradation products of BDE209 were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), accordingly, the possible degradation pathway was further proposed. The research suggested that ball milling with mZVI and boric acid is a low-cost means of preparing highly active zero valent iron materials. And the mZVI^bm has promising applications in improving the activation efficiency of PS and enhancing the removal of the contaminant.

Synergistic adsorption and oxidation of trivalent antimony from groundwater using biochar supported magnesium ferrite: Performances and mechanisms

Antimony (Sb) pollution is considered an environmental problem, since Sb is toxic and carcinogenic to humans. Here, a novel biochar supported magnesium ferrite (BC@MF) was adopted for Sb(III) removal from groundwater. The maximum adsorption capacity was 77.44 mg g^-1. Together with characterization, batch experiments, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic analyses suggested that inner-sphere complexation, H-bonding, and electrostatic interactions were the primary mechanisms. C-C/CC, C-O, and O-CO groups and Fe/Mg oxides might have acted as adsorption sites. The adsorbed Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V). The generation of reactive oxygen species, iron redox reaction, and oxidizing functional groups all contributed to Sb(III) oxidation. Furthermore, the fixed-bed column system demonstrated a satisfactory Sb removal performance; BC@MF could treat ∼6060 BV of simulated Sb-polluted groundwater. This research provides a promising approach to sufficiently remove Sb(III) from contaminated groundwater, providing new insights for the development of innovative strategies for heavy metal removal.

Recycling of Plastics from E-Waste via Photodegradation in a Low-Pressure Reactor: The Case of Decabromodiphenyl Ether Dispersed in Poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) and Poly(carbonate)

Recycling of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), containing brominated flame retardants (BFR) remains difficult due to the increasingly stringent regulations on their handling and recovery. This report deals with photodegradation in a low-pressure reactor applying UV-visible light on Decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDE or BDE-209) randomly dispersed in commercially available Poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and Poly(carbonate) (PC). The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of decomposing a BFR in plastic waste from EEE while maintaining the specifications of the polymeric materials in order to allow for their recycling. The photodegradation of the extracted BFR was monitored using infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. DBDE underwent rapid photodegradation during the first minutes of exposure to UV-visible light and reached degradation yields superior to 90% after 15 min of irradiation. The evaluation of polymer properties (ABS and PC) after irradiation revealed superficial crosslinking effects, which were slightly accelerated in the presence of DBDE. However, the use of a low-pressure reactor avoids large photooxidation and allowed to maintain the thermal and structural properties of the virgin polymers.

The thermal degradation and soil recovery of thermal treatment of field-weathered decabrominated diphenyl ether-contaminated soil

A farm at Taoyuan in Taiwan was highly contaminated with decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209), a widely used commercial brominated flame retardant and persistent in the environment, more than 10 years. Since crops are able to absorb and accumulate BDE-209 from soils in our previous research, posing a hazardous risk for humans, it is essential to develop a practical method of soil treatment. Thermal treatment was studied among different approaches. In our previous study (Ko et al., 2022), we found that heating to 450 °C for 30 min achieved a complete removal of BDE-209 in soil. However, the high temperature significantly decreased the original soil organic matter (SOM) from 2.47% to 0.27%, altering the soil texture, damaging microbial biomass, and thus affecting the revegetation after the thermal treatment. Sugarcane bagasse, a common agricultural residue, served as an amendment to restore soil fertility. Current results indicate that 2.5% bagasse can improve the SOM in soil by up to 2.73% and restore its bacterial composition, making the plant growth conditions similar to those of the untreated contaminated soil. In light of the high removal efficiency provided by the 450°C-thermal treatment and the high recovery efficiency of sugarcane bagasse, the strategy presented in this study serves to be a promising method for sustainable remediation.

New insights into mechanism of emerging pollutant polybrominated diphenyl ether inhibiting sludge dark fermentation

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), derived from electronics, furniture, etc., are detected with high level in excess sludge (ES). In this work, the influence of PBDEs on ES dark fermentation (ESDF) hydrogen production and the related key mechanisms were explored. The result shows PBDEs exposure reduced hydrogen production, and hydrogen accumulation decreased from 17.6 mL/g in blank to 12.3 mL/g with 12.0 mg/Kg PBDEs. PBDEs induced the reactive oxygen species production, which directly led to cell inactivation and reduced hydrogen production. Furthermore, PBDEs decreased ES disintegration, hydrolysis, acidification and homoacetogenic processes and inhibited the activities of enzymes related to hydrogen production. PBDEs also affected the diversity and richness of microbial communities in dark fermentation systems, especially high doses of PBDEs reduced the relative abundance of microorganisms associated with hydrogen production. In conclusion, PBDEs reduce hydrogen generation from ES.

Performance and mechanisms for tetrabromobisphenol A efficient degradation in a novel homogeneous advanced treatment based on S2O42- activated by Fe3

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a representative brominated flame retardant (BFR), generally could be debrominated and degraded effectively in photolysis systems with the high energy consumption. In this study, the novel sulfate radical (SO₄^•-) generation resource of dithionite (S₂O₄^2-), activated by the common transition metal of Fe³⁺, has been applied for establishing an innovative homogeneous advance treatment system for BFR treatment in water. When coupling Fe³⁺ with S₂O₄^2-, TBBPA degradation efficiency could be remarkably improved from 38.7% to 93.8% with the debromination and mineralization efficiency of 83.9% and 18.5% in 60 min, respectively. The primary reactive species also have been identified as SO₃^•-, SO₄^•- and •OH responsible for TBBPA treatment and the contributions of SO₄^•- and •OH have been calculated as 43.8% and 28.4% for TBBPA degradation, respectively. In Fe³⁺/S₂O₄^2- system, TBBPA was effectively degraded in a wide initial pH range (3.0-9.0), whose activation energy was calculated as 32.01 kJ mol^-1. Due to the only operation of reagents dosing, the energy consumption and cost could be decreasing significantly without any light energy input and reaction conditions (e.g., pH and dissolved oxygen) adjustment compared with the general photolysis process. Moreover, some possible degradation approaches of TBBPA also have been proposed via GC-MS including debromination, hydroxylation, methylation, and mineralization in Fe³⁺/S₂O₄^2- system. And these probable degradation pathways also have been confirmed with the decreased Gibbs free energy (ΔG) based on density functional theory (DFT). This study has revealed that it was promising of Fe³⁺/S₂O₄^2- system for BFRs degradation and detoxification efficiently through the simple operation and mild condtions.

Occurrence and ecological risk assessment of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether and decabromodiphenyl ether in surface waters across China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are efficient brominated flame retardants and are released into various environmental media via usage, recycling and disposal. This study investigated the concentrations and ecological risks of two typical PBDEs, 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), in surface waters across China from 2011 to 2018. The results showed that the concentration of BDE-209 (8.25 ng L^-1) was higher than that of BDE-47 (1.02 ng L^-1), and the concentrations of BDE-47 and BDE-209 in the lakes (2.56 ng L^-1 and 22.19 ng L^-1, respectively) were higher than those in the rivers (0.58 ng L^-1 and 7.05 ng L^-1, respectively). In addition, the concentration of BDE-209 in the wet season (2.61 ng L^-1) was lower than that in the dry season (10.83 ng L^-1), whereas the concentration of BDE-47 in the wet season (0.24 ng L^-1) was a little lower than that in the dry season (0.99 ng L^-1). BDE-47 and BDE-209 concentrations showed a gradual decrease in surface waters across China during the eight-year period. Based on the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models, the 5% hazardous concentration (HC₅) and predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values were derived using the acute and chronic toxicity data of BDE-47 and BDE-209. Results showed that the PNEC values based on the acute and chronic toxicity data were 2.08 μg L^-1 and 0.52 μg L^-1 for BDE-47, respectively and 370 μg L^-1 and 0.34 μg L^-1 for BDE-209, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) values of BDE-47 in surface waters across China were far smaller than 0.1 (low ecological risk). Similarly, the RQ values of BDE-209 were also smaller than 0.1, except for those at Baiyangdian Lake and Chaohu Lake, where the probability of 0.1 ≤ RQ < 1.0 (medium ecological risk) was approximately 10% based on 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations.

Aerobic Degradation Characteristics and Mechanism of Decabromodiphenyl Ether (BDE-209) Using Complex Bacteria Communities

Complex bacteria communities that comprised Brevibacillus sp. (M1) and Achromobacter sp. (M2) with effective abilities of degrading decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) were investigated for their degradation characteristics and mechanisms under aerobic conditions. The experimental results indicated that 88.4% of 10 mg L^-1 BDE-209 could be degraded after incubation for 120 h under the optimum conditions of pH 7.0, 30 °C and 15% of the inoculation volume, and the addition ratio of two bacterial suspensions was 1:1. Based on the identification of BDE-209 degradation products via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, the biodegradation pathway of BDE-209 was proposed. The debromination, hydroxylation, deprotonation, breakage of ether bonds and ring-opening processes were included in the degradation process. Furthermore, intracellular enzymes had the greatest contribution to BDE-209 biodegradation, and the inhibition of piperyl butoxide (PB) for BDE-209 degradation revealed that the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme was likely the key enzyme during BDE-209 degradation by bacteria M (1+2). Our study provided alternative ideas for the microbial degradation of BDE-209 by aerobic complex bacteria communities in a water system.

Assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ether contamination and associated human exposure risk at municipal waste dumping sites

The reports concerning the occurrence and fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at municipal solid waste (MSW) dumping sites are scarce, and considering the Indian context, no study has been conducted to assess PBDE contamination at MSW dumping sites and associated exposure and health risk. Therefore, in the present study, the concentration of PBDE congeners was investigated in soil samples amassed from MSW dumping sites of India and the factors affecting the dissemination of different PBDE congeners in soil were evaluated. Also, the human exposure and health risk through soil intake and dermal contact were also evaluated the first time in India. The total PBDE concentrations from tri- to deBDE congeners in soil ranged from 6.81 to 33.67 μg/g dw and showed a trend towards higher levels of PBDEs in the dumping sites of more populous cities. BDE 183 was found to be the main congener in the soil of the dumping sites. The congener profile in the soil exhibited the composition of the octa- and deBDE technical mixture and possibilities of biological and photodegradation of deBDE into lower brominated congeners. A significant correlation was observed between the measures of BDE 183 and BDE 209 congeners and carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen contents of the soil. The measured exposure doses of PBDEs through soil intake and dermal contact and the hazard index was estimated higher in children as compared to adults, which indicates the increased risk and susceptibility of infants and children to PBDE exposure. The results of the present study revealed that the MSW dumping sites in India are a sink of PBDEs and might have detrimental effects on human health.

Catalytic degradation of brominated flame retardants in the environment: New techniques and research highlights

Due to the extensive commercial use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), human beings are chronically exposed to BFRs, causing great harms to human health, which imposes urgent demands to degrade them in the environment. Among various degradation techniques, catalytic degradation has been proven to be outstanding because of its rapidness and effectiveness. Therefore, much attention has been given to catalytic degradation, especially the extensively studied photocatalytic degradation and nanocatalytic reduction techniques. Recently, some novel advanced catalytic techniques have been developed and show excellent catalytic degradation efficiency for BFRs, including natural substances catalytic degradation, new Fenton catalytic degradation, new chemical reagent catalytic degradation, new material catalytic degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, plasma catalytic degradation, and composite catalytic degradation systems. In addition to the common features of traditional catalytic techniques, these novel techniques possess their own specific advantages in various aspects. Therefore, this review summarized the degradation mechanism of BFRs by the above new catalytic degradation methods under the laboratory conditions, simulated real environment, and real environment conditions, and further evaluated their advantages and disadvantages, aiming to provide some research ideas for the catalytic degradation of BFRs in the environment in the future. We suggested that more attention should focus on features of novel catalytic techniques, including eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and pragmatic usefulness.

An updated review on environmental occurrence, scientific assessment and removal of brominated flame retardants by engineered nanomaterials

Due to the extensive manufacturing and use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), they are known to be hazardous, bioaccumulative, and recalcitrant pollutants in various environmental matrices. BFRs make flame-resistant items for industrial purposes (textiles, electronics, and plastics equipment) that are disposed of in massive amounts and leak off in various environmental matrices. The consumption of plastic items has expanded tremendously during the COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted into the increasing load of solid waste on land and water. Some BFRs, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs), are no longer utilized or manufactured owing to their negative impacts, which promotes the utilization of new BFRs as alternatives. BFRs have been discovered worldwide in soil, sludge, water, and other contamination sources. Various approaches such as photocatalysis-based oxidation/reduction, adsorption, and heat treatment have been found to eradicate BFRs from the environment. Nanomaterials with unique properties are one of the most successful methodologies for removing BFRs via photocatalysis. These methods have been praised for being low-cost, quick, and highly efficient. Engineered nanoparticles degraded BFRs when exposed to light and either convert them into safer metabolites or completely mineralize. Scientific assessment of research taking place in this area during the past five years has been discussed. This review offers comprehensive details on environmental occurrence, toxicity, and removal of BFRs from various sources. Degradation pathways and different removal strategies related to data have also been presented. An attempt has also been made to highlight the research gaps prevailing in the current research area.

Immobilization of microbes on biochar for water and soil remediation: A review

Biochar has caught great attention over the last decade with the loose and porous structure, and carbon stability provides suitable living conditions for the growth and activity of microorganisms. This review provided a comprehensive summary of biochar immobilization microbe (BIM) in water and soil decontamination. Firstly, the bacterial immobilization techniques including adsorption, entrapping, and covalence methods were exhibited. Secondly, the applications of BIM in water and soil environmental remediation were introduced, mainly including the treatment of organic pollutants, heavy metals, and N/P, among which the most frequently immobilized microorganism was Bacillus. Then, the mechanisms of adsorption, redox, and degradation were analyzed. Finally, pertinent questions for future research of BIM technology were proposed. The purpose of this paper is to provide useful background information for the selection of better biochar fixation microorganisms for water and soil remediation.

Combination of Soxhlet extraction and catalytic hydrodebromination for remediation of tetrabromobisphenol A contaminated soil

As a widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has been detected in various environmental matrices and is known to cause negative effects on both the environment and human health. In this study, a combined method was developed for the abatement of TBBPA contaminated soil based on successive steps of solvent extraction (SE) and catalytic hydrodebromination (HDB) over Pd/C. The results showed that TBBPA could be efficiently extracted from the TBBPA contaminated soil with polar solvents. Subsequently, TBBPA could be completely hydrodebrominated over Pd/C in ethanol, via multistep ultimately yielding bisphenol A. Moreover, NaOH, NH₃H₂O, and Et₃N were more favorable to promote the HDB of 4-TBBPA over Pd/C, and 100% bromide atom removal ratio of TBBPA was achieved within 40 min when [NaOH]₀/[organic-Br]₀ was more than 1.10 in ethanol. However, the catalytic activity of Pd/C decreased with the repeated use in ethanol. To study the mechanism for this phenomenon, fresh and used catalysts were analyzed by characterization techniques including scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). It was found that the deactivation of Pd/C catalyst caused by the gradual accumulation of NaBr could be recovered by washing with water. On the basis of these studies, an effective and practical system for the combined method of SE and catalytic HDB over Pd/C was developed to dispose BFRs contaminated soils.

Understanding the role of biochar in affecting BDE-47 biodegradation by Pseudomonas plecoglossicida: An integrated analysis using chemical, biological, and metabolomic approaches

Biochar-assisted microbial degradation technology is considered as an important strategy to eliminate organic pollutants, but the mechanism of biochar in affecting biodegradation has not been systematically studied. To address this knowledge gap, the effect of various biochars on biodegradation of different initial concentrations of BDE-47 by Pseudomonas plecoglossicida was investigated. The results showed that biochar exhibited significant promotion to the biodegradation of BDE-47, especially at concentrations of BDE-47 above 100 μg/L. The promotion effect was negatively influenced by the aromaticity and micropore volume of biochar. Biochar alleviated the cytotoxicity of BDE-47 to P. plecoglossicida and promoted cell proliferation based on toxicity assays. Additionally, biochar acted as shelter and stimulated the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances, which might support P. plecoglossicida to struggle with extreme conditions. Metabolomic analysis indicated that biochar resulted in upregulation expression of 38 metabolites in P. plecoglossicida. These upregulated metabolites were mainly related to glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, citrate cycle, and serial amino acid metabolism, suggesting that biochar could improve the BDE-47 biodegradation via enhancing oxidative metabolism and energy supply of the bacterial cells. This work elucidates how biochar can affect BDE-47 biodegradation and provides insights for the application prospect of biochar-assisted microbial degradation technology in the environment.

The environmental fate of biomass associated polybrominated diphenyl ethers

The widespread use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) inevitably leads to their occurrence in the atmosphere, soil, and sediment. Biomass, especially dry branches and fallen leaves, may act a large reservoir for PBDEs through atmospheric deposition or soil bioaccumulation. Thus, clarifying the sunlight-induced transformation behaviors of PBDEs on biomass is highly significant for our understanding on its natural self-purification process. In this work, the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of two common PBDEs congeners, decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), on biomass were systematically studied under natural and simulated sunlight irradiation conditions. The highest photodegradation rate constant of BDE-209 and BDE-47 was observed on sour cherry (SC) and zoysia matrella (ZM), respectively, which was related to their larger light receiving area and poor crystallinity. Due to the higher apparent quantum efficiency, BDE-209 degrades faster than BDE-47 (0.063-0.223 vs 0.006-0.026 h^-1). The sunlight self-purification cycle of BDE-209 and BDE-47 on biomass were 6 and 14 days, respectively, with the corresponding sunlight contribution in the range of 0.12-0.51 ng mW^-1. Products analysis by GC-MS and HPLC-MS/MS revealed that the main reactions involved in the photodegradation of BDE-209 and BDE-47 on biomass were debromination, hydroxylation, cyclization, and C-O bond breaking reaction. Especially, it was firstly proposed that hydroxyl H in lignin from biomass participated in the formation of primary products, which were rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and control experiments.

Current Developments in the Effective Removal of Environmental Pollutants through Photocatalytic Degradation Using Nanomaterials

Photocatalysis plays a prominent role in the protection of the environment from recalcitrant pollutants by reducing hazardous wastes. Among the different methods of choice, photocatalysis mediated through nanomaterials is the most widely used and economical method for removing pollutants from wastewater. Recently, worldwide researchers focused their research on eco-friendly and sustainable environmental aspects. Wastewater contamination is one of the major threats coming from industrial processes, compared to other environmental issues. Much research is concerned with the advanced development of technology for treating wastewater discharged from various industries. Water treatment using photocatalysis is prominent because of its degradation capacity to convert pollutants into non-toxic biodegradable products. Photocatalysts are cheap, and are now emerging slowly in the research field. This review paper elaborates in detail on the metal oxides used as a nano photocatalysts in the various type of pollutant degradation. The progress of research into metal oxide nanoparticles, and their application as photocatalysts in organic pollutant degradation, were highlighted. As a final consideration, the challenges and future perspectives of photocatalysts were analyzed. The application of nano-based materials can be a new horizon in the use of photocatalysts in the near future for organic pollutant degradation.

Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of BDE-47 by bacteria isolated from an e-waste-contaminated site and the effect of various additives

Degradation experiments are conducted to specifically compare the degradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) by aerobic and anaerobic strains isolated from real e-waste sites contaminated by BDE-47. The effect of carbon sources, inducers and surfactants on the degradation was examined to strengthen such a comparison. An aerobic strain, B. cereus S1, and an anaerobic strain, A. faecalis S4, were obtained. The results indicated that BDE-47 could be used as the sole carbon source by B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The degradation of BDE-47 by B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 was illustrated a first-order kinetics process obtaining a removal efficiency of 61.6% and 51.6% with a first-order rate constant of 0.0728 d^-1 and 0.0514 d^-1, and corresponding half-life of 8.7 d and 13.5 d, respectively. The addition of carbon sources (yeast extract, glucose, acetic acid and ethanol) and inducers (2,4-dichlorophenol, bisphenol A and toluene) promoted BDE-47 degradation by both B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, while hydroquinone as the inducer inhibited the degradation. All of the surfactants tested (CTAB, Tween 80, Triton X-100, rhamnolipid and SDS) showed inhibitory effect. BDE-47 degradation by B. cereus S1 under aerobic condition was more efficient than A. faecalis S4 under anaerobic condition whether with or without the additives. The results of the study indicated that in the field sites contaminated by BDE-47, the aerobic condition can be more favorable for BDE-47 removal and the degradation can be further enhanced by applying suitable carbon sources and inducers.

Photoexcitation dynamics of bromodiphenyl ethers in acetonitrile-d3 studied by femtosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy

The efficient decomposition of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), onetime prevalent flame retardants, is central to the reduction of their harmful effects on human health. PBDE photodecomposition is a promising method, but its mechanism and products are not well understood. The photoexcitation dynamics of 3- and 4-bromodiphenyl ethers (BDE-2 and BDE-3) in CD₃CN were studied from 0.3 ps to 10 μs using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. An excitation at 267 nm dissociated the Br atom from BDE-2 and BDE-3 within 0.3 ps and 14 ± 3 ps, respectively, producing a radical compound (R) and a Br atom. About 85% of R formed an intermediate (IM) that weakly interacted with the Br atom and the surrounding CD₃CN solvent in 7-12 ps. The remaining R separated from the dissociated Br and underwent slow geminate rebinding (GR) with Br within 35 to 54 ns. The IM competitively engaged in GR with the interacting Br in 40-60 ps or formed CD₃CN-bound radical compounds (RS) in 100-130 ps. The RS further degraded via either the dissociation of CD₃-producing a cyano-bound diphenyl ether (DE) in 150 or 550 ns-or the deuterium abstraction of CD₃CN in 180 or 430 ns-producing a deuterated DE. Overall, 33 ± 3 (22 ± 3)% of the photoexcited BDE-2 (BDE-3) decomposed in CD₃CN under 267 nm excitation. Efficient binding of the CD₃CN solvent to R deterred the yield-diminishing GR and slowed the rate of product formation. The observed photoexcitation dynamics of BDE suggest methods for the efficient decomposition of PBDE.

Gas-particle partition and size-segregated distribution of flame retardants in indoor and outdoor air: Reevaluation on the role of fine particles in human exposure

In this study, we investigated the distribution of brominated and organophosphate flame retardants (BFRs and OPFRs) in the paired gaseous and nine size-segregated particulate samples collected from 8 typical indoor compartments and monthly outdoor in Xinxiang, China, respectively. For the indoor environments, total concentrations of FRs (Σ₁₉FRs) in bulk air ranged from 3.9 ng/m³ to 37.5 ng/m³, with that in children recreation center (37.5 ng/m³) and furniture store (28.7 ng/m³) showing highest levels. In the outdoor air, Σ₁₉FRs ranged from 3.1 ng/m³ to 13.6 ng/m³ among the 12 months, with that from late spring and summer being the highest. OPFRs had higher concentration than BFRs, with the total concentration of OPFRs accounting for 77%-99% of ∑₁₉FRs. TCIPP (tris(chloroiso-propyl) phosphate), TCEP (tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate), TEP (triethyl phosphate) and DBDPE (decabromodiphenyl ethane), BDE-209 (decabromodiphenyl ether) were the predominant analogs. Specifically, BFRs tended to enrich in gas phase indoors and coarse particles (aerodynamic diameters >3.3 μm) outdoors, but OPFRs mainly distributed in coarse particles both indoors and outdoors. The size distribution patterns varied among FRs, with the higher volatile FRs (e.g., TCEP, TCIPP) distributed more uniformly across particulate size. Although the distribution patterns of FRs in air were driven by multiple factors, organic carbon and element carbon in particulate matter had an influence to a certain extent. Health risks from exposure to FRs were characterized via the hazard quotient approaches. The total noncarcinogenic risks of ∑₁₆FRs from inhalation were higher than that from air to skin transport, and the risks resulted from coarse particle-bound ∑₁₆FRs (>3.3 μm) and gas phase were both significantly higher than that from fine fraction (<3.3 μm) in all scenarios, implying that FRs in coarse particles should not be underestimated.

Removal kinetics and mechanisms of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by HA-n-FeS colloids in the absence and presence of oxygen

The colloid of ferrous sulfide modified by humic acid (HA-n-FeS) shows good reduction and immobilization efficiency for variable-valence heavy metals in wastewater. The removal efficiency of HA-n-FeS for halogenated organic pollutants, however, remains unclear, especially in the absence and presence of oxygen. This study addressed this issue by exploring the effect and mechanism of dissolved oxygen on the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by the HA-n-FeS colloid in water. The results showed that the removal efficiency of different concentrations of TBBPA (5,10, and 20 μm) by the HA-n-FeS colloid was 33.16%, 20.48%, and 22.37% in the absence of oxygen, respectively. When TBBPA reacted with the HA-n-FeS colloid, the concentration of Fe(II) and S(-II) remained stable. The adsorption of HA-n-FeS was the main mechanism of removing TBBPA in the absence of oxygen. In the presence of oxygen, the removal efficiency of TBBPA by the HA-n-FeS colloid was 82.37%, 56.80%, and 43.78% (for the above-mentioned TBBPA concentrations), respectively. In addition, the removal capacity of TBBPA by HA-n-FeS was 39.63, 52.21, and 89.75 mg/g, respectively. The concentration of Fe(II) and S(-II) decreased rapidly in time. Among them, the HA-n-FeS colloid removed part of the TBBPA through chemical adsorption. The main way of chemical adsorption was pore adsorption and functional group (olefin CC, phenolic hydroxyl group O-H, alcohol group C-O) combination. Besides, the HA-n-FeS colloid degraded part of the TBBPA into BPA through reduction, in which 17.72% of TBBPA was removed by the reduction of HA-n-FeS colloid. Fe(II) was the main contributor to the reductive degradation of TBBPA. Furthermore, active species (1O2 and •O2-) played a minor role in the removal of TBBPA by the HA-n-FeS colloids with oxygen, where 13% of TBBPA was removed by 1O2 and •O2-. Therefore, in practical applications, the aeration method can be used to significantly improve the removal efficiency of TBBPA by HA-n-FeS colloids in water.

New insight on occurrence of liquid crystal monomers: A class of emerging e-waste pollutants in municipal landfill leachate

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) have been proposed as a class of emerging organic pollutants, which were recently detected in indoor dust and sediment samples collected near electronic devices recycling facilities. However, there is a knowledge gap for analytical method, occurrence, and distribution of LCMs in aqueous sample. Herein, a robust method was developed to determine 38 target LCMs in landfill leachate. A combined ultrasonic enhanced liquid-liquid extraction, saponification and silica/florisil packed column purification method achieved recoveries of 76.9~127.1%, 84.5~114.6% and 81.3~104.6% at spiking levels of 2 ng, 10 ng and 50 ng in leachate, respectively. The developed method was validated through determination of target LCMs in leachate samples collected from municipal landfills in Hong Kong (HK) and Shenzhen (SZ), China. There were 23 and 20 LCMs detected in the HK (ΣLCMs=1120 ng/L) and SZ (ΣLCMs=409 ng/L) sample, respectively, with 6 LCMs newly detected in the environment. This study provided the first evidence suggesting that landfill leachate might be a potential sink of LCMs emitted from e-waste. Future study is urged to investigate the potential migration of LCMs from landfill leachate as a point source, and their occurrence, distribution, fate, and ecotoxicological risk in aquatic environments on regional and global scales.

A new spent coffee grounds based biochar - Persulfate catalytic system for enhancement of urea removal in reclaimed water for ultrapure water production

The demand for ultrapure water (UPW) in the semiconductor industry has increased in recent years, while the idea to use reclaimed water instead of tap water for UPW production has also attracted more attention. However, since urea concentration in reclaimed water is higher than that in tap water, UPW production has not been efficient. To resolve this problem, this study aims to develop a new spent coffee grounds based biochar (SCG-BC)/persulfate catalytic system as a pretreatment unit. The objective is to enhance urea removal from reclaimed water so that UPW production is more effective. In this study, the biochar used was prepared from spent coffee grounds with detailed characterization. Results strongly suggested that the urea removed by SCG-BC/persulfate catalytic system was very encouraging (up to 73%). The best possible dosages for SCG-BC and persulfate for urea removal were 0.2 and 2.0 g L^-1, respectively. Furthermore, this system could remove urea effectively in a wide range of pH (3-10). Moreover, the characterizations of SCG-BC (graphite C, defective edges and functional groups, i.e. -OH, CO, carboxyl C-O) helped to activate persulfate in the catalytic process. OH^• and SO₄^• - were all involved in this process, while the SO₄^• - was the main radical for urea degradation.

Magnetic MgFe2O4/biochar derived from pomelo peel as a persulfate activator for levofloxacin degradation: Effects and mechanistic consideration

Biochar (BC) has been demonstrated the potential to activate persulfate (PS), but the limited catalytic efficiencies hindered their further application. Herein, an innovative magnetic MgFe₂O₄/BC (MMB) derived from pomelo peel was prepared for persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOPs). Benefitting from the extraordinary properties, levofloxacin (LFX) was efficiently removed in the MMB/PS system. MMB700 exhibited the best catalytic activity, 87.87% of LFX was removed in the MMB700/PS system. In addition, it could maintain 67.90% of LFX degradation efficiency after 3 times of reuse. Quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) detection, and electrochemical test results indicated that both non-radical pathway and direct electron-transfer pathway advanced LFX degradation. LFX was oxidized by O₂^·- and ¹O₂, O₂^·- acted as the dominant active species. PS activation was induced by the active sites of MMB700. This work not only developed a promising magnetic biochar PS catalyst for antibiotics elimination, but also facilitated insights PS activation mechanisms.

Influences of humic acid on the release of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from plastic waste in landfills under different environmental conditions

Landfill-formed humic acid are an important substance in landfill leachate. The effect of landfill-formed humic acid in different environments (temperature and surfactant concentrations) on the release of chemicals from plastic waste remains unknown. In order to explore the pollution release rates of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in different plastic waste, humic acid were used as the extractant to conduct leaching simulation tests to study the effects of time, temperature, and surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)) concentrations on the release of PBDEs in waste. This waste includes polypropylene random pipes (PPRP), polyethylene of raised temperature resistance pipes (PERTP), polyvinyl chloride pipes (PVCP), polypropylene plastic benches (PPB), polypropylene washing machines (PPWM), polystyrene television (PSTV), and flame-retardant acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (FRABS). The leaching amounts of PBDEs had significant linear growth over time. Among them, the leaching amount of PBDEs in daily plastics is lower than dismantling plastics. The rate of leaching of BDE-209 was greater than the other congeners, with a leaching amount of up to 93.10%. Different types of waste exhibited different changes with temperature and surfactants concentrations. Among all the waste types, the leaching amounts of PBDEs in PPRP and PERTP gradually increased with increasing temperature. Surfactants within a certain concentration range can promote the release of PBDEs. The purpose of the research is to explore the dissolution law of PBDEs of different plastic products and the same product in different environment, provides a theoretical basis for the management and risk control of landfills.

Novel insights into the adsorption of organic contaminants by biochar: A review

With rising concerns in the practical application of biochar for the remediation of environment influenced by various organic contaminants, a critical review to facilitate insights the crucial role that biochar has played in wastewater and polluted soil decontamination is urgently needed. This research therefore aimed to describe different intriguing dimensions of biochar interactions with organic contaminants, which including: (i) an introduction of biochar preparation and the related physicochemical properties, (ii) an overview of mechanisms and factors controlling the adsorption of organic contaminants onto biochar, and (iii) a summary of the challenges and an outlook of the further research needs in this issue. In the light of the survey consequences, the appearance of biochar indicates the potential in substituting the existing costly adsorbents, and it has been proved that biochar is one promising adsorbent for organic pollutants adsorption removal from water and soil. However, some research gaps, such as dynamic adsorption, potential environmental risks, interactions between biochar and soil microbes, novel modification techniques, need to be further investigated to facilitate its practical application. This research will be conductive to better understanding the adsorption removal of organic contaminants by biochar.

Release, transformation, and risk factors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from landfills to the surrounding environments: A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) serve as brominated flame retardants when added to various products. When these products reach their end of life, a large amount of domestic waste containing PBDEs enters the landfills. Given their weak chemical bonds, they are easily affected by physical, chemical, and biological processes. These processes result in their release and the subsequent contamination of the surrounding soil, groundwater, and atmosphere, causing harm to humans and ecosystems. However, despite the progress made in the research of PBDEs over the years, understanding of the environmental behavior and fate of pollutants is still limited. With the development of cities, the release of PBDEs in old landfills will gradually increase the risk to the surrounding environment. Here we review the biological and nonbiological transformation of PBDEs and their derivatives in landfills and surrounding areas, as well as their distribution in soil, groundwater, and atmosphere. Specifically, this review aims to provide insights into the following aspects: 1) the biological (plant, animal, and microbial) and nonbiological (metal catalysis and photodegradation) conversion of PBDEs and their derivatives in landfills and surrounding areas; 2) the distribution of landfill-sourced PBDEs in the soil, groundwater, atmosphere and cross-media migration; and 3) suggestions and future research directions for the management and control of PBDEs in landfills.

Activated carbons from waste Cassia bakeriana seed pods as high-performance adsorbents for toxic anionic dye and ciprofloxacin antibiotic remediation

Waste Cassia bakeriana seed pods were used for porous carbon production in a facile pyrolysis process. The carbons were highly efficient adsorbents for methylene blue, congo red and ciprofloxacin antibiotic from aqueous media. The experimental results demonstrated that despite moderate surface area of 283.4 m²/g, KOH activated carbon (PSAC-KOH) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for congo red reported to date for carbon-based adsorbents (970 mg/g). PSAC-KOH also demonstrated a high adsorption capacity at 600 mg/g for ciprofloxacin. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the carbons demonstrated an extensive graphitic characteristic, while Fourier transform infrared spectra of PSAC-KOH suggested a high proportion of aromaticity which promotes adsorption mechanisms including electrostatic and π-π interactions. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitting suggested a rate-controlling chemisorption mechanism. The utilization of waste Cassia bakeriana seed pods for carbon production may create new opportunities to develop sustainable and highly efficient adsorbents for water remediation.

Environmental occurrence and remediation of emerging organohalides: A review

As replacements for "old" organohalides, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), "new" organohalides have been developed, including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), and perfluorobutyrate (PFBA). In the past decade, these emerging organohalides (EOHs) have been extensively produced as industrial and consumer products, resulting in their widespread environmental distribution. This review comprehensively summarizes the environmental occurrence and remediation methods for typical EOHs. Based on the data collected from 2015 to 2021, these EOHs are widespread in both abiotic (e.g., dust, air, soil, sediment, and water) and biotic (e.g., bird, fish, and human serum) matrices. A significant positive correlation was found between the estimated annual production amounts of EOHs and their environmental contamination levels, suggesting the prohibition of both production and usage of EOHs as a critical pollution-source control strategy. The strengths and weaknesses, as well as the future prospects of up-to-date remediation techniques, such as photodegradation, chemical oxidation, and biodegradation, are critically discussed. Of these remediation techniques, microbial reductive dehalogenation represents a promising in situ remediation method for removal of EOHs, such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs).
