Abstract
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a growing epidemic condition that is expected to reach pandemic levels in the upcoming decades. Physical activity among individuals with type 2 diabetes is beneficial. A deeper understanding of physical activity among adults with type 2 diabetes in Jordan using a qualitative approach is needed. Aim This study aimed at exploring physical activity among adults with type 2 diabetes in Jordan. Design A constructivist grounded theory methodology guided this study. Methods Data were collected using semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews and then analysed simultaneously using coding, constant comparative analysis and writing reflexive memos. Findings Two themes emerged including 'The Perception about Physical Activity' and 'Factors Influencing Adherence to Physical Activity'. The first theme included four sub-themes: physical activity definition; importance; duration and types. The second theme included five sub-themes: the belief that diet is superior to physical activity; ageing and presence of diabetes or comorbidities; job and family obligations; social support and weather. Conclusion This study provided insights into patients' perceptions and adherence to physical activity including facilitators and barriers. Clinicians and policymakers may consider the findings of this study to develop health promotion programmes and to suggest a suitable environment for individuals with type 2 diabetes to enhance their physical activity.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to examine the association between accelerometer-derived moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and depressive symptoms in hemodialysis patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods This cross-sectional study finally included 450 maintenance hemodialysis patients (male 281, average age 62 years) from seven dialysis centers in Shanghai, China. Physical activity (PA) was measured using the triaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+, Pensacola, FL, United States). We measured depressive symptoms using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) (PHQ-9 ⩾ 10). We categorized physical activity into quartile groups (Q1 through Q4), with the first quartile defined as low engagement and the remaining quartiles defined as moderate to high engagement. We used logistic regression and trend test to analyze the relationship between quartile groups and depressive symptoms. The analyses in this study adjusted for a range of confounders. Results The prevalence of depression was higher in patients with hemodialysis combined with T2DM (17.2%). In diabetic patients, MVPAQ4 was negatively associated with depression after adjusting for covariates [OR = 0.076; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.006-0.955, p = 0.046]. However, in non-diabetic hemodialysis patients, no significant association was found between MVPAQ1-Q4 and depression after adjusting for covariates (p > 0.05). Conclusion Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was associated with depression in the diabetic hemodialysis group, but not in the non-diabetic group. Further studies are needed to investigate more causal relationships between MVPA and depressive symptoms in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
The escalating global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and mental disorder (MD) including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and anxiety highlights the urgency for comprehensive therapeutic strategies. Aerobic exercise (AE) is a viable adjunct therapy, providing significant benefits for individuals dealing with both T2DM and MD. This review consolidates evidence on AE's role in alleviating the physiological and psychological effects of these comorbid conditions. It delves into the pathophysiological connections between T2DM and various MD, including depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and bipolar disorder-emphasizing their reciprocal exacerbation. Key neurophysiological mechanisms through which AE confers benefits are explored, including neuroinflammation modulation, brain structure and neuroplasticity enhancement, growth factor expression regulation, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)/microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis normalization. Clinical results indicate that AE significantly improves both metabolic and psychological parameters in patients with T2DM and MD, providing a substantial argument for integrating AE into comprehensive treatment plans. Future research should aim to establish detailed, personalized exercise prescriptions and explore the long-term benefits of AE in this population. This review underscores the potential of AE to complement existing therapeutic modalities and enhance the management of patients with T2DM and MD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital and mobile health interventions using personalization via reinforcement learning algorithms have the potential to reach large number of people to support physical activity and help manage diabetes and depression in daily life. OBJECTIVE The Diabetes and Mental Health Adaptive Notification and Tracking Evaluation (DIAMANTE) study tested whether a digital physical activity intervention using personalized text messaging via reinforcement learning algorithms could increase step counts in a diverse, multilingual sample of people with diabetes and depression symptoms. METHODS From January 2020 to June 2022, participants were recruited from 4 San Francisco, California-based public primary care clinics and through web-based platforms to participate in the 24-week randomized controlled trial. Eligibility criteria included English or Spanish language preference and a documented diagnosis of diabetes and elevated depression symptoms. The trial had 3 arms: a Control group receiving a weekly mood monitoring message, a Random messaging group receiving randomly selected feedback and motivational text messages daily, and an Adaptive messaging group receiving text messages selected by a reinforcement learning algorithm daily. Randomization was performed with a 1:1:1 allocation. The primary outcome, changes in daily step counts, was passively collected via a mobile app. The primary analysis assessed changes in daily step count using a linear mixed-effects model. An a priori subanalysis compared the primary step count outcome within recruitment samples. RESULTS In total, 168 participants were analyzed, including those with 24% (40/168) Spanish language preference and 37.5% (63/168) from clinic-based recruitment. The results of the linear mixed-effects model indicated that participants in the Adaptive arm cumulatively gained an average of 3.6 steps each day (95% CI 2.45-4.78; P<.001) over the 24-week intervention (average of 608 total steps), whereas both the Control and Random arm participants had significantly decreased rates of change. Postintervention estimates suggest that participants in the Adaptive messaging arm showed a significant step count increase of 19% (606/3197; P<.001), in contrast to 1.6% (59/3698) and 3.9% (136/3480) step count increase in the Random and Control arms, respectively. Intervention effectiveness differences were observed between participants recruited from the San Francisco clinics and those recruited via web-based platforms, with the significant step count trend persisting across both samples for participants in the Adaptive group. CONCLUSIONS Our study supports the use of reinforcement learning algorithms for personalizing text messaging interventions to increase physical activity in a diverse sample of people with diabetes and depression. Abstract
Physical exercise is often cited as an important part of an intervention for depression, and there is empirical evidence to support this. However, the mechanism of action through which any potential antidepressant effects are produced is not widely understood. Recent evidence points toward the involvement of endogenous opioids, and especially the mu-opioid system, as a partial mediator of these effects. In this chapter, we discuss the current level of empirical support for physical exercise as either an adjunctive or standalone intervention for depression. We then review the extant evidence for involvement of endogenous opioids in the proposed antidepressant effects of exercise, with a focus specifically on evidence for mu-opioid system involvement.

Abstract
Previous research has revealed a strong link between the experience of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and diabetes in adulthood. Moreover, research has shown that sexual minorities (SM) are exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (i.e. CSA) and experience depression at higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. Thus, it is imperative to further investigate the role of depression and the differential associations of exposure to ACEs with diabetes prevalence by sexual orientation. We explored sexual orientation disparities regarding the relationship between CSA and diabetes and examined the moderating role of depression. A total of 29,903 participants from the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were included in this study. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the survey data, and weighted logistic regression and moderation analysis were performed. Heterosexuals who experienced CSA (AOR = 1.25; p < .05) and SM who experienced CSA (AOR = 2.13; p < .05) reported higher odds of having diabetes. Among heterosexuals, depression (AOR = 1.38; p < .001) was significantly associated with having diabetes. Additionally, depression was a significant moderator among heterosexuals with and without CSA. Further understanding of the impact of ACEs on diabetes among specific subgroups of SM should be assessed in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-grade inflammation represents a critical contribution to the onset of depression and might be manageable by physical activity (PA). Nevertheless, no study has examined synergistic interactions of insufficient PA and high values of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) on psychological problems. OBJECTIVE We investigated independent and synergistic interactions of insufficient PA and high SII levels on stress, anxiety, and depression in T2DM patients. METHODS A cross-sectional research design with 294 T2DM patients was conducted. An XP-100 automated hematology analyzer was used to evaluate inflammatory biomarkers. Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items and a standardized questionnaire about PA were respectively used to measure psychological problems and metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-h/week. RESULTS A multiple linear regression demonstrated that patients with insufficient PA were significantly more likely to have higher stress (β = 1.84, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.03-2.65), anxiety (β = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.81-2.96), and depression (β = 2.53, 95% CI = 0.82-4.24) than those with active PA. A high SII level was a key predictor and was most strongly associated with stress (β = 2.61, 95% CI = 2.02-3.20), anxiety (β = 3.16, 95% CI = 2.37-3.94), and depression (β = 3.72, 95% CI = 2.49-4.96) compared to those who had low SII levels. Notably, additive interaction results showed that combining insufficient PA and a high SII level had a significantly escalated 1.71-fold risk of stress, 1.82-fold risk of anxiety, and 2.69-fold risk of depression. CONCLUSIONS Active PA and a low SII had a positive synergistic effect of decreasing psychological problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The globalization of healthcare systems, and the aim to lower healthcare costs have all contributed to the growth of telehealth technology in recent years. However, before these systems are put into use, their efficacy should be verified. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study focusing on the evaluation of functional exercise capacity using the 30-s sit-to-stand (30-s STS) test as a tele-assessment method in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). AIMS The purpose of the study is to investigate the level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of 30-s STS test in patients with T2DM. METHODS Fifty participants performed two times 30-s STS tests separated by 1 h: a face-to-face and an Internet-connected video call examination (tele-assessment). Two physiotherapists conduct these evaluations; each was blinded to the other. The order of the evaluations was designated at random for each participant and physiotherapist. RESULTS There was a good level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of the 30-s STS test (mean differences = 0.20 ± 0.88, limits of agreement = 1.93 to - 1.53). Excellent interrater reliability was found for scores of the 30-s STS test [ICC = 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88; 0.96)]. In addition, all before and after test parameters show that there was a very good interrater reliability (ρ ≥ 0.75). CONCLUSIONS This study shows a good level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of the 30-s STS test. Our study's findings indicate that tele-assessment is a potential application to determine the level of physical capacity remotely in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesise the evidence on the effects of physical activity on symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychological distress in adult populations. DESIGN Umbrella review. DATA SOURCES Twelve electronic databases were searched for eligible studies published from inception to 1 January 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials designed to increase physical activity in an adult population and that assessed depression, anxiety or psychological distress were eligible. Study selection was undertaken in duplicate by two independent reviewers. RESULTS Ninety-seven reviews (1039 trials and 128 119 participants) were included. Populations included healthy adults, people with mental health disorders and people with various chronic diseases. Most reviews (n=77) had a critically low A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews score. Physical activity had medium effects on depression (median effect size=-0.43, IQR=-0.66 to -0.27), anxiety (median effect size=-0.42, IQR=-0.66 to -0.26) and psychological distress (effect size=-0.60, 95% CI -0.78 to -0.42), compared with usual care across all populations. The largest benefits were seen in people with depression, HIV and kidney disease, in pregnant and postpartum women, and in healthy individuals. Higher intensity physical activity was associated with greater improvements in symptoms. Effectiveness of physical activity interventions diminished with longer duration interventions. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE Physical activity is highly beneficial for improving symptoms of depression, anxiety and distress across a wide range of adult populations, including the general population, people with diagnosed mental health disorders and people with chronic disease. Physical activity should be a mainstay approach in the management of depression, anxiety and psychological distress. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021292710.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity may be effective in alleviating depressive symptoms and improving glycaemic control; however, evidence to guide practice is limited. The current review was conducted to assess the effects of physical activity on depression and glycaemic control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS Randomized controlled clinical trials, from the earliest record to October 2021, which recruited adults with the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and compared physical activity with no interventions or usual care for the management of depression were included. The outcomes were change in depression severity and glycaemic control. RESULTS In 17 trials, including 1362 participants, physical activity was effective in reducing the severity of depressive symptoms (SMD = -057; 95%CI = -0.80, -0.34). However, physical activity did not have a significant effect in improving markers of glycaemic control (SMD = -0.18; 95%CI = -0.46, 0.10). LIMITATIONS There was substantial heterogeneity in the included studies. Furthermore, risk of bias assessment showed that most of the included studies were of low quality. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity can effectively reduce the severity of depressive symptoms, nonetheless, it appears that physical activity is not significantly effective in improving glycaemic control in adults who have both type 2 diabetes mellitus and depressive symptoms. The latter finding is surprising, however, given the limited evidence on which this is based, future research on the effectiveness of physical activity for depression in this population should include high quality trials with glycaemic control as an outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a major public health problem. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary inflammation index (DII), physical activity, and depressive symptoms, and to explore the effect of different lifestyles on depressive symptoms by combining DII and physical activity to form four lifestyle groups. METHODS This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016. A total of 21,785 subjects were involved. Depressive symptoms and dietary inflammation were measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index, respectively. The participants were divided subgroups by different physical activity combined pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory diet groups. RESULTS Both pro-inflammatory diet and inactivity were positively associated with depressive symptoms. Compared with the anti-inflammatory diet & active group, the risk of depressive symptoms was 2.061 times higher in the pro-inflammatory diet & inactive group, 1.351 times higher in the pro-inflammatory diet & active group, and 1.603 times higher in the anti-inflammatory diet & inactive group. Physical inactivity was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms than a pro-inflammatory diet. Females and the 20-39 age group showed a strong association between lifestyles and depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS Because of the cross-sectional study, no causal conclusions could be drawn. Moreover, PHQ-9 is a relatively basic method of identifying depressive symptoms, more and further research is needed. CONCLUSIONS Both a pro-inflammatory diet and physical inactivity were associated with higher risk of depressive symptoms, especially for young and female population.

Abstract
This study investigates the feasibility of an accompanied 5-day hiking tour (Way of St. James) for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and its impact on their quality of life/well-being, diabetes distress and glucose profile. Twenty-three T2DM patients (with and without insulin therapy) participated in the study. The 120 km pilgrimage (from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela, Spain) was accompanied by three physicians, two diabetes counselors and one sports scientist. Quality of life/well-being was assessed by the World Health Organization’s (WHO)-5 questionnaire, and diabetes distress was evaluated based on the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale. The glucose levels of six insulin-treated patients were measured using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, considering that insulin-treated patients can be at increased risk of exercise-induced hypoglycemia. A significant improvement in quality of life/well-being was reported (p < 0.001), while diabetes distress did not change significantly (p = 0.203). Only two of the six insulin-treated patients showed moderate hypoglycemic episodes between 0.97% and 5.21% time below range per day, with glucose levels between 53−70 mg/dL. Hiking tours such as the one organized for this study can improve quality of life/well-being without increasing diabetes distress and are considered relatively safe for T2DM patients, even for those being treated with insulin.

Abstract
The rs6265 in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is associated with depression in people with diabetes. Both physical activity (PA) and grip strength are negatively associated with depression. We conducted cross-sectional analyses of the wave 10 survey data for a nationally representative sample of 1,051 diabetes participants of the Health and Retirement Study. Both greater PA (β = -.15) and stronger grip strength (β = -.02) were independently associated with depression. Although the interaction between BDNF rs6265 and PA on depressive symptoms was not significant, the negative PA-depression association was stronger among female non-Met carriers (β = -.19) and male Met carriers (β = -.14). Meanwhile, grip strength was associated with depression only in Met carriers (β = -.04), and similar association was observed in both males and females. In conclusion, female non-Met carriers and male Met carriers may benefit from PA.

Abstract
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Korea has ranked first in the OECD, with a prevalence of 36.8% of depression. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the effect size of physical activity as an alternative tool for depression symptoms using meta-analysis. A meta-analysis on depressive symptoms was performed on 18 studies published in Korean domestic journals. The moderating variables hypothesized in this study included age groups of participants; depressive symptoms; and frequency, intensity, time, type, and duration of the intervention. The overall effect size of physical activity on depression was moderate (0.56 [95% CI: 0.39 to 0.91]). Specifically, physical activity was slightly more effective in reducing depression in participants with an 18-64 age group compared to older people over 65 years old, while it was most effective for participants without depressive symptoms compared to participants with mild and severe symptoms. Further, the subgroup analysis revealed that performing two times a week for 30 to 60 min with progressive intensity for 1-8 weeks may be the most effective for Koreans. The results of this study can provide guidelines for the most effective physical activity program for Koreans.

Abstract
Although mental disorders in diabetics are more prevalent than in the general population, an increased prevalence of depression, frequently leading to suicide, has been reported in individuals with diabetes mellitus. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to assess the risk of depression and suicide in diabetic patients. The prevalence of depression and suicide is high among diabetic individuals. Risk factors including history of depression, presence of comorbidity, younger age, lower education, low social support, presence of diabetic complications, poor glycemic control, and physical impairment, all increase the risk of depression among diabetics. On the other hand, female sex, the intensity of childhood trauma, a history of alcohol misuse, depression, lower level of education, comorbidities, higher blood glucose levels, and previous history of suicide, all increase the risk of suicide among diabetics. Additionally, a bidirectional relationship exists between depression and diabetes. For example, depression can cause diabetes due to the disease's psychological and psychosocial impact, microvascular brain lesions, higher glutamate levels, poor glycemic control, and medication adherence. On the other hand, diabetic patients develop depression due to the stress associated with disease management. This paper concluded that depression and suicide are both prevalent conditions among diabetic patients. The higher risk of depression and suicidality in diabetic patients emphasizes the critical need of integrating depression screening and treatment into primary healthcare settings to avoid fatal conditions in the future. However, more research is required in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients have a raised risk of developing depression compared with non-diabetic people. OBJECTIVE The objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate the impacts of exercise training interventions to improve psychosocial aspects and glycemic control in T2DM patients. DATA SOURCES PubMed, CINAHL, Medline, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases and reference lists of included studies were searched. STUDY SELECTION The selection criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using an exercise intervention with or without dietary advice on psychological aspects and glycemic control in T2DM patients, up to January 2021. Meta-analyses were performed using the random-effects model. The analysis included 17 RCTs with 2,127 participants. RESULTS In the pooled analysis, improvements were seen in depression, standard mean difference (SMD) -0.65 (95% confidence interval (CI) -1.03 to -0.28, p = 0.0006), mental health SMD: 0.53 (95% CI 0.31 to 0.76, p < 0.00001), and HbA1c, weighted mean difference (WMD) -0.51% (95% CI -0.97 to -0.04, p = 0.03). There were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups for bodily pain, social functioning, and fasting glucose (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our systematic review and meta-analysis displayed that exercise training interventions decreased depression and HbA1c and increased mental health in individuals with T2DM. Further longer-term and high-quality clinical trials are required to additional assess and confirm the findings presented here.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence supporting the association between gut microbiome composition and mood disorders; however, studies on the circulating microbiome are scarce. This study aimed to analyze the association of the serum microbial DNA composition with depressive and anxiety symptoms in patients with mood disorders. The sera of 69 patients with mood disorders, aged from 19 to 60, were analyzed. Bacterial DNA was isolated from extracellular membrane vesicles and, subsequently, amplified and quantified with specific primers for the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rDNA gene. Sequence reads were clustered into Operational Taxonomic Units and classified using the SILVA database. There were no significant associations between alpha diversity measures and the total Hamilton depression rating scale (HAM-D) or Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) scores. Only the weighted UniFrac distance was associated with the total HAM-D score (F = 1.57, p = 0.045). The Bacteroidaceae family and Bacteroides genus were negatively associated with the total HAM-D score (β = - 0.016, p < 0.001, q = 0.08 and β = - 0.016, p < 0.001, q = 0.15, respectively). The Desulfovibrionaceae family and Clostridiales Family XIII were positively associated with the total BAI score (β = 1.8 × 10-3, p < 0.001, q = 0.04 and β = 1.3 × 10-3, p < 0.001, q = 0.24, respectively). Further studies with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs are warranted.

Abstract
CONTEXT Growing evidence highlights the importance of physical activity as a critical element for the prevention and control of diabetes. However, there is no clinical practice guideline focusing on the different aspects of exercise in patients with diabetes, especially for the Iranian population. OBJECTIVE We aimed to prepare and adopt a clinical practice guideline to provide well-defined, simple, and concise responses to certain questions related to physical activity and exercise in all patients with diabetes, including type 1, 2, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). EVIDENCE ACQUISITION A multidisciplinary team of experts in various fields (sports medicine specialists, endocrinologists, and cardiologists) developed the guideline. This group did the task in four stages: (1) identifying and refining the subject area using 17 clinical questions; (2) appraising evidence through a systematic review of the literature; (3) extracting recommendations from evidence and grading them as A, B, C, or D based on the quality, quantity, and consistency of existing evidence; and (4) subjecting the guideline to external review and finally selecting the recommendations with high scores of appropriateness and agreement. The final version was evaluated and approved by the National Deputy for Curative Affairs - Ministry of Health and Medical Education and has also been endorsed by the Iran Endocrine Society (IES) and Iranian Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine (IASEM). RESULTS The guideline consists of 52 recommendations addressing 17 important questions concerning different aspects of exercise prescription in Iranian patients with diabetes. CONCLUSIONS The guideline provides evidence-based information that may help physicians to prescribe exercise for Iranian patients with diabetes safely and effectively.

Abstract
Diabetes increases the likelihood of developing depression and vice versa. Research on this bidirectional association has somewhat managed to delineate the interplay among implicated physiological processes. Still, further exploration is required in this context. This review addresses the comorbidity by investigating suspected common pathophysiological mechanisms. One such factor is psychological stress which disturbs the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis causing hormonal imbalance. This includes elevated cortisol levels, a common biomarker of both depression and diabetes. Disrupted insulin signaling drives the hampered neurotransmission of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Also, adipokine hormones such as adiponectin, leptin, and resistin and the orexigenic hormone, ghrelin, are involved in both depression and T2DM. This disarray further interferes with physiological processes encompassing sleep, the gut-brain axis, metabolism, and mood stability. Behavioral coping mechanisms, such as unhealthy eating, mediate disturbed glucose homeostasis, and neuroinflammation. This is intricately linked to oxidative stress, redox imbalance, and mitochondrial dysfunction. However, interventions such as psychotherapy, physical exercise, fecal microbiota transplantation, and insulin-sensitizing agents can help to manage the distressing condition. The possibility of glucagon-like peptide 1 possessing a therapeutic role has also been discussed. Nonetheless, there stands an urgent need for unraveling new correlating targets and biological markers for efficient treatment.

Abstract
To examine the differences in physical activity (PA) between older adults with and without diabetes/prediabetes and the correlates of PA frequency and associations between medical advice on PA and/or diet/weight loss and increasing PA among those with diabetes/prediabetes. Multinomial and binary logistic regression models using 2016-2017 National Health Interview Survey data (N = 4,860 aged 65+ years with diabetes/prediabetes). About 44.2% of those with diabetes/prediabetes, compared with 48.1% of a matched sample without, engaged in any PA three plus times a week. The low PA group (PA frequency was zero to two times a week) was more socioeconomically disadvantaged and had more chronic illnesses than the medium (three to four times a week) or high (five plus times a week) PA groups. Any PA and/or diet/weight loss medical advice was associated with two to three times higher odds of increasing PA. Health care providers should consider prescribing PA and/or diet/weight loss for patients with diabetes/prediabetes.

Abstract
Background: Reliability refers to the precision of an assessment, so it is a critical topic to take the right decisions related to health management. People usually perform several tasks at the same time in their daily life. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of the 30-s chair stand test in people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) with test–retest, with and without dual-task (motor + cognitive task). Methods: Twenty-six subjects with T2DM and 30 subjects without T2DM performed the 30-s Chair Stand Test (30sCST) in which they must sit and stand as many times as possible in 30 s. They performed the test in the usual way (30sCST) and also with an additional cognitive task (30sCST-DT). A retest was conducted 7–14 days later. Results: Relative reliability was excellent in both groups (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.9). In 30sCST-DT, relative reliability was high in the T2DM group (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.7) and excellent in subjects without T2DM (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.9). Conclusions: The 30sCST and the 30sCST-DT tests are reliable tools for people with T2DM to measure changes after an intervention. The smallest real difference was 15% and 20% upper in the T2DM group in the 30sCST and 30sCST-DT tests, respectively.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar na literatura evidências acerca dos efeitos da associação entre espiritualidade, religiosidade e atividade física na saúde física e mental. Método: Revisão sistemática realizada em janeiro de 2019 nas bases de dados MEDLINE/PubMed, SCOPUS, Web Of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS e SciELO, com os descritores “spirituality”, “religion”, “physical activity” e “physical exercise”. Incluíram-se estudos primários realizados com adultos, publicados até 2018 em português, inglês ou espanhol. Resultados: Foram selecionados nove estudos, publicados entre 2011 e 2017, todos internacionais, com desenho transversal (55%) e nível de evidência quatro (78%). Oito estudos abordaram efeitos na saúde física e um abordou efeitos na saúde mental. Conclusão: A Associação entre espiritualidade, religiosidade e atividade física promove efeitos na saúde física e mental, porém as evidências disponíveis não são suficientes para que esta associação seja aplicada na prática clínica.

Risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients and the effect of metformin on the condition. BMC Public Health 2019; 19:1063. Abstract
Background At present, only a few studies have focused on the risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients, and there is little evidence for the effect of metformin in depressed elderly patients with diabetes than on its effect on blood glucose. The aim of the current work was to study the risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients and to ascertain the effects of metformin on the depressive state. Methods We initiated a 1:4 matched case–control study. The case group comprised 110 elderly diabetic patients with depression from nine communities in Shenyang in 2017. The control group comprised 440 non-depressed elderly diabetic patients from the same communities, which were matched by gender and age (± 2 years of age) with the case group. Depression was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15, and we performed matched univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results In the multivariate analysis, overweight status, poor physical capabilities and low activity level, and the presence of more than two additional illnesses were risk factors for depression in elderly patients with diabetes. For these risk factors, the adjusted ORs (all P < 0.05) were as follows: an adjusted OR of 2.031 and 95% CI of 1.180–3.495; an adjusted OR of 2.342 and 95% CI of 1.465–3.743; and an adjusted OR of 5.350 and 95% CI of 2.222–12.883, respectively. Patients taking metformin had a lower risk of depression than those taking no medication, with an adjusted OR of 0.567 and 95% CI of 0.323–0.997 (P < 0.05). Conclusions Overweight status, poor physical capabilities and low activity level, and the presence of more than two additional illnesses were risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients, and metformin was a protective factor against depression in elderly diabetic patients.
