Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsive behaviors, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Despite the poor understanding of the underlying biological processes, the oxytocin (OXT) system may be involved in and mediate some of BPD's symptomatic and behavioral aspects. To clarify OXT's role in BPD, we assessed its plasma levels and modulations induced by psychotherapies in patients. METHODS Fifty BPD patients and 28 healthy controls (HC) participated in the study; patients were randomly assigned to two psychotherapeutic treatments: metacognitive interpersonal therapy and structured clinical management. Clinical and psychometric measures were assessed, and plasma was collected at baseline (T0) and in patients after 6 (T6) and 12 (T12) months of treatment. OXT was quantified by a radioimmunoassay technique. RESULTS BPD patients showed lower plasma OXT at T0 than HC (p = 0.002), and a correlation was observed (r = -0.36, p = 0.017) between low OXT concentrations and high Attachment Style Questionnaire - Italian Version-Preoccupation with Relationships subscale scores. OXT changed significantly over time in patients (p = 0.049) with an increase particularly evident from baseline to T6 (p = 0.022), without significant difference between treatment groups. OXT changes (T0 - T12) inversely correlated with symptom improvement as changes in the Zanarini Rating Scale for borderline personality disorder (r = 0.387, p = 0.006) and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (r = 0.387, p = 0.005) scores during treatment. CONCLUSIONS OXT alteration in BPD patients and the regularizing effect of long-term psychotherapies support an involvement of the OXT system in the disease and in treatment impact. More research is needed to fully understand the underlying causal mechanisms linking OXT with pathogenesis and psychotherapy outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on ecosystem theory and genetic and environmental research paradigms, the current research explored the influence mechanism of interpersonal relationship and OXTR gene rs1042778, rs2254298 and rs53576 polymorphisms on adolescent depression and NSSI. METHOD The main study investigation explored the effect of the interaction between interpersonal relationship and OXTR gene on adolescent depression and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI). Concurrently, a supplementary examination investigated oxytocin's physiological impact on the social-emotional behaviors of mice subjected to post-weaning social isolation. RESULTS OXTR gene rs2254298 and rs53576 moderated the influence of interpersonal relationship on adolescent depression, and rs2254298 also moderated the influence of interpersonal relationship on adolescent NSSI. PWSI reduced the mice's emotional social ability and affected the expression and transcription of OXT and OXTR mRNA, which could be reversed after an appropriate dose of oxytocin treatment. CONCLUSION Interaction between interpersonal relationship and the OXTR gene affects adolescent depression and NSSI. The OXTR gene heterozygous genotype individuals were more sensitive to environmental stimuli, supporting the differential susceptibility model.

Abstract
Interest in the therapeutic potential of oxytocin for the treatment of mental health disorders, especially those involving social dysfunction, has increased considerably in recent years. To date, most studies have only evaluated oxytocin as monotherapy, with highly inconsistent results. A new line of research is exploring the effects of combining oxytocin with psychotherapy. The aim of the present review was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of intranasal oxytocin combined with psychotherapy in individuals with psychiatric disorders. Only randomized clinical trial design was eligible for inclusion. A search of relevant databases yielded 2480 articles published through April 30, 2024. Of these, 13 trials (518 participants) were included in this review and 4 of them in a meta-analysis. The trials evaluated a range of different psychotherapeutic interventions, oxytocin doses, and mental disorders. Overall, the trials suggested that combined treatment reduced negative mental representations, decreased stress, and increased therapeutic alliance. Meta-analysis showed that combined treatment significantly reduced depressive symptoms (d= -1.58, 95 % CI: -3.15 to -0.01). However, the treatment with oxytocin had no significant effects on psychiatric symptoms (d= 0.00, 95 % CI: -0.56-0.57) or social functioning (d = 0.21, 95 % CI: -0.07-0.49). Limitations included the heterogeneity and limited sample sizes of the trials. The findings suggest that the combination of intranasal oxytocin and psychotherapy may be an effective therapeutic approach to reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with mental disorders and may improve retention and therapeutic alliance.

Abstract
Borderline personality disorder constitutes a significant medical challenge. Despite the fact that its occurrence among adolescents is currently attracting increasing interest from both clinicians and researchers, there is still insufficient data on this phenomenon. The etiology and maintenance of borderline personality disorder are not yet fully comprehended. Neuropeptides, including oxytocin and vasopressin, are considered to be involved in the development of this condition. The mechanism behind the actions of these neurohormones requires further investigation. Our work aims to collect and analyze the available research and existing hypotheses on the role of oxytocin and vasopressin in people with borderline personality disorder, with special attention drawn to adolescents suffering from this condition.

Abstract
This article provides an updated review of hypopituitarism (HP), an endocrine disorder characterized by a deficiency of one or more pituitary hormones. The various etiologies are reviewed, including pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs), hypothalamic lesions, genetic mutations, and acquired factors such as head trauma, medications, neoplasms, and infiltrative diseases. It is noted that PitNETs are responsible for approximately half of the cases in adults, whereas in children the causes are predominantly congenital. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and hormonal testing, with identification of the specific hormonal deficiencies essential for effective treatment. Laboratory tests present challenges and limitations that must be understood and addressed. Hormone replacement therapy is the mainstay of treatment, significantly improving patients' quality of life. It is important to know the possible interactions between hormone replacement therapies in HP. Recent advances in understanding the pathophysiology of HP and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of associated complications are discussed. This article emphasizes the need for comprehensive evaluation and continuous follow-up to optimize outcomes in patients with HP and highlights the importance of ongoing research to improve diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Abstract
The theoretical foundations of understanding psychiatric disorders are undergoing changes. Explaining behaviour and neuroendocrine cell communication leaning towards immunology represents a different approach compared to previous models for understanding complex central nervous system processes. One such approach is the study of immunoglobulins or autoantibodies, and their effect on peptide hormones in the neuro-endocrine system. In the present review, we provide an overview of the literature on neuropeptide/transmitter and autoantibody modulation in psychiatric disorders featuring emotional problems and aggression, including associated illness behaviour. Finally, we discuss the role of psycho-immunology as a growing field in the understanding of psychiatric disorders, and that modulation and regulation by IgG autoAbs represent a relatively new subcategory in psycho-immunology, where studies are currently being conducted.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OXT), a neuropeptide consisting of only nine amino acids, is synthesized in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus. Although OXT is best known for its role in lactation and parturition, recent research has shown that it also has a significant impact on social behaviors in mammals. However, a comprehensive review of this topic is still lacking. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the effects of OXT on social behavior in mammals. These effects of OXT from the perspective of five key behavioral dimensions were summarized: parental behavior, anxiety, aggression, attachment, and empathy. To date, researchers have agreed that OXT plays a positive regulatory role in a wide range of social behaviors, but there have been controversially reported results. In this review, we have provided a detailed panorama of the role of OXT in social behavior and, for the first time, delved into the underlying regulatory mechanisms, which may help better understand the multifaceted role of OXT. Levels of OXT in previous human studies were also summarized to provide insights for diagnosis of mental disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dysfunctions in the oxytocin system have been reported in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Deficits could be related to interpersonal hypersensitivity, which has been previously associated with failures in social cognition (SC) in this disorder, especially in Theory of Mind (ToM) skills. The aim of this work is to study the links between the oxytocin system and SC impairments in patients with BPD. METHOD Plasma oxytocin levels (OXT) and protein expression of oxytocin receptors in blood mononuclear cells (OXTR) were examined in 33 patients with a diagnosis of BPD (age: M 28.85, DT = 8.83). Social cognition was assessed using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Statistical associations between biochemical factors and different response errors in MASC were analyzed through generalized linear regression controlling for relevant clinical factors. RESULTS Generalized linear regression showed a significant relationship between lower OXTR and overmentalization in BPD patients (OR = 0.90). CONCLUSIONS This work supports the relationship between alterations in the oxytocin system and ToM impairments observed in BPD patients, enhancing the search for endophenotypes related to the phenotypic features of the disorder to improve current clinical knowledge and address more specific therapeutic targets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studying empathy in borderline personality disorder (BPD) is essential because difficulties with interpersonal functioning are integral. OBJECTIVES This scoping and narrative review explores the aetiological theory that BPD is an innate anomaly of cognitive empathy, with a normal or heightened emotional empathy. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND SOURCES OF EVIDENCE Ovid MEDLINE(R) ALL was searched using the terms empathy; theory of mind; mentalisation or mentalising; borderline empathy; emotion recognition and BPD. For inclusion in the scoping review, articles needed to empirically assess an empathic skill in people with BPD, or self-reported empathy in a BPD group compared to controls, or empathic skill as a 'borderline feature' in a nonclinical sample. CHARTING METHOD The results of empirical studies were categorised as per their methodological approach, with results in the BPD group reported as comparable, enhanced or reduced compared to controls. RESULTS 320 articles were returned, with 38 eligible. The majority affirmed that people with BPD have an anomalous empathetic ability, especially a deficient cognitive empathy. Furthermore, this is trait, evident early in development, correlates with syndrome severity, and is mediated by atypical neural networks. CONCLUSIONS This substantiates the theory that BPD is, at least in major part, an innate empathy anomaly.
