Bioturbation activity of three macrofaunal species and the presence of meiofauna affect the abundance and composition of benthic bacterial communities

Metabarcoding the Antarctic Peninsula biodiversity using a multi-gene approach

Marine sediment communities are major contributors to biogeochemical cycling and benthic ecosystem functioning, but they are poorly described, particularly in remote regions such as Antarctica. We analysed patterns and drivers of diversity in metazoan and prokaryotic benthic communities of the Antarctic Peninsula with metabarcoding approaches. Our results show that the combined use of mitochondrial Cox1, and 16S and 18S rRNA gene regions recovered more phyla, from metazoan to non-metazoan groups, and allowed correlation of possible interactions between kingdoms. This higher level of detection revealed dominance by the arthropods and not nematodes in the Antarctic benthos and further eukaryotic diversity was dominated by benthic protists: the world's largest reservoir of marine diversity. The bacterial family Woeseiaceae was described for the first time in Antarctic sediments. Almost 50% of bacteria and 70% metazoan taxa were unique to each sampled site (high alpha diversity) and harboured unique features for local adaptation (niche-driven). The main abiotic drivers measured, shaping community structure were sediment organic matter, water content and mud. Biotic factors included the nematodes and the highly abundant bacterial fraction, placing protists as a possible bridge for between kingdom interactions. Meiofauna are proposed as sentinels for identifying anthropogenic-induced changes in Antarctic marine sediments.

Biodiversity and Habitat Assessment of Coastal Benthic Communities in a Sub-Arctic Industrial Harbor Area

Coastal ecosystems face increasing anthropogenic pressures worldwide and their management requires a solid assessment and understanding of the cumulative impacts from human activities. This study evaluates the spatial variation of benthic macrofaunal communities, sediments, and heavy metals in the sub-Arctic coastal ecosystems around Sept-Îles (Québec, Canada)—a major port area in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Physical sediment properties varied in the studied area, with a general sandy-silty profile except for specific locations in Baie des Sept Îles where higher organic matter and heavy metal concentrations were detected. Macrofaunal assemblages were evaluated for two taxa size classes (organisms > 0.5 mm and > 1 mm) and linked to habitat parameters using regression models. Communities of smaller organisms showed signs of perturbation for one assemblage close to industrial activities at Baie des Sept Îles, with an increased number of tolerant and opportunistic species, contrasting to neighboring regions whose compositions were similar to other ecosystems in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This study enhances the understanding of sub-Arctic benthic communities and will contribute to monitoring programs for industrial harbor ecosystems.

Macroinfauna responses and recovery trajectories after an oil spill differ from those following saltmarsh restoration

Given the severity of injuries to biota in coastal wetlands from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWH) and the resulting availability of funding for restoration, information on impacted salt marshes and biotic development of restored marshes may both help inform marsh restoration planning in the near term and for future spills. Accordingly, we performed a meta-analysis to model a restoration trajectory of total macroinfauna density in constructed marshes (studied for ~30 y), and with a previously published restoration trajectory for amphipods, we compared these to recovery curves for total macroinfauna and amphipods from DWH impacted marshes (over 8.5 y). Total macroinfauna and amphipod densities in constructed marshes did not consistently reach equivalency with reference sites before 20 y, yet in heavily oiled marshes recovery occurred by 4.5 y post spill (although it is unlikely that macroinfaunal community composition fully recovered). These differences were probably due to initial conditions (e.g., higher initial levels of belowground organic matter in oiled marshes) that were more conducive to recovery as compared to constructed marshes. Furthermore, we found that amphipod trajectories were distinctly different in constructed and oiled marshes as densities at oiled sites exceeded that of reference sites by as much as 20x during much of the recovery period. Amphipods may have responded to the rapid increase and high biomass of benthic microalgae following the spill. These results indicate that biotic responses after an oil spill may be quantitatively different than those following restoration, even for heavily oiled marshes that were initially denuded of vegetation. Our dual trajectories for oil spill recovery and restoration development for macroinfauna should help guide restoration planning and assessment following the DWH as well as for restoration scaling for future spills.

Changes in infaunal assemblage structure influence nutrient fluxes in sediment enriched by mussel biodeposition

Although many studies have described the influence of bivalve aquaculture on the benthic environment, effects on benthic functional diversity are poorly known, as are links with ecosystem processes. We investigated the response of a benthic ecosystem in terms of taxonomic and functional diversity (infauna >500 μm), biogeochemical indicators (organic matter content, redox potential, sulfides level, bacteria) and metabolism (nutrient fluxes), subjected to various levels of mussel biodeposition as a general model of organic enrichment. Results show that local benthic conditions may recover fairly quickly depending on environmental conditions whereas modifications of the benthic community structure persist over a longer time scale with an impact on benthic ecosystem functioning. Fauna-mediated oxidation of the sediment likely increased nitrogen recycling through nitrification whereas binding and release of phosphorus to the water column seems to be driven by more complex processes. Results highlight the importance of species identity (ecological traits) on biogeochemical cycling and solute exchange across the sediment-water interface, with implications for the ecological functioning of exploited areas.

Structural analysis of the essential environmental factors associated with the marine meiofauna

A biogeochemical study was carried out from 2006 to 2007 in Bohai Bay, northern China, to investigate meiofauna and a number of environmental factors. A total of 18 environmental factors were selected to study their interrelations using Interpretive Structural Analysis. The results showed that these environmental factors could be divided into five levels according to their degree of impact; the results also showed clear links among these factors. The six factors designated as Level 1 included both biological and chemical factors. The other factors had indirect effects on meiofauna and affect these six factors in different ways. There was single factor, sediment grain size, in the fifth level. The structural analysis of the essential factors gave us more information than simple correlation analysis did. Both the water and sediment factors influenced the benthos community. The result is helpful in understanding the complex relationships between environmental factors, and could be used to grasp the main causes and their environmental linkages with further studies; it would be a good basis for integrative environmental management.

Sessile macrobenthos (Ochrophyta) drives seasonal change of meiofaunal community structure on temperate rocky reefs

Unlike the soft bottom meiofauna, meiofauna associated to hard substrata is poorly studied, despite its ecological relevance. Since communities of hard substrata are usually characterized by species with different life cycles and strategies from those of soft bottom assemblages, information on hard substrata meiofauna is still needed. In this study, sessile macrobenthos and the associated meiofaunal assemblages of two sites of Portofino (NW Mediterranean) were investigated in two seasons at three different depths on both sub-vertical and inclined reefs. The study aimed to assess the abundance, diversity and composition of the meiofauna and the factors structuring its assemblages. Moreover, as meiofauna is known to be dependent upon the substrate characteristics, the study investigated whether the meiofaunal patterns could be related to the sessile macrobenthos structure and composition, and to which extent. Macroalgae dominated the sessile macrobenthic assemblages, while Nematoda and Copepoda were the main meiofaunal groups. Meiofaunal higher-taxa richness and diversity resulted very high, due to the large number of different microhabitats offered by macroalgae. Macrobenthic assemblages were dominated by Rodophyta and Ochrophyta in summer, the latter dramatically collapsing in winter. The meiofaunal abundance and composition changed significantly with the season, consistently with the sessile macrobenthic assemblages, and resulted strongly correlated with Ochrophyta. Shaping the meiofaunal assemblages, macroalgae appeared to act as ecosystem engineer for the meiofauna.

Intensified nutrients removal in constructed wetlands by integrated Tubifex tubifex and mussels: Performance and mechanisms

The synergy of Tubifex tubifex (T. tubifex) and mussels on SFCWs (named SFCW-MT) performance was well studied in laboratory throughout a year. The SFCW-MT were steady operated with high TN and TP treatment, with the removal efficiencies of 37.85 ± 5.22% and 39.26 ± 5.20% even in winter. The mussels had excellent NH₄-N removal efficiency, and avoid the shortage of NH₄-N removal with T. tubifex in winter. Simultaneously, the SFCW-MT improved the NO₃-N treatment by 51% than that in control group. The plant growth was improved in SFCW-MT, which reflected in the improvement of total chlorophyll contents and plant heights. The N and P absorbed by wetland plants and adsorbed by substrate were both increased with mussels. Microbial analysis results revealed that, the mussels could keep the abundance of nitrifiers despite the negative effect of T. tubifex. On that basis, the improved proportions of denitrifiers (Firmicutes) have a significantly recognized role in NO₃-N transformation in SFCW-MT. The gut and membrane sections of mussels, as well as T. tubifex, also has proportions of denitrifiers and part of nitrifiers, and thus changed the microbial community in substrate. This evidence indicated that the co-existence of T. tubifex and mussels have potential application for simultaneous removal of NH₄-N and NO₃-N in CWs.
