Altered diversity and composition of gut microbiota in patients with allergic rhinitis

Exploring Causal Relationships Between Gut Microbiota, Inflammatory Cytokines, and Inflammatory Dermatoses: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Background

Some studies have established a link between gut microbiota, inflammatory proteins, and inflammatory dermatoses. However, the mediating role of inflammatory proteins in the gut-skin axis remains unclear.

Methods

Data on inflammatory proteins and gut microbiota were drawn from the GWAS catalog and MiBioGen consortium, with inflammatory skin disease data provided by the FinnGen consortium. Using genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we performed linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) to assess genetic correlations and conducted a two-step Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate circulating inflammatory proteins as potential mediators between gut microbiota and inflammatory dermatoses.

Results

MR analysis identified 38 gut microbiota and 23 inflammatory proteins associated with inflammatory skin diseases. After false discovery rate (FDR) correction, four gut microbiota taxa-Eubacterium fissicatena, Bacteroidaceae, Allisonella, and Bacteroides, remained statistically significant (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.16-1.50, adjusted P = 0.007; OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.48-3.42, adjusted P = 0.026; OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.18-1.70, adjusted P = 0.014; OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.48-3.42, adjusted P = 0.013), with only IL-18R1 significantly associated with eczema (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.03-1.08, adjusted P = 0.017). Further mediation analysis showed that IL-15RA mediated 11% of the pathway between Veillonellaceae and eczema, while FGF19 mediated 6% of the pathway between genus LachnospiraceaeUCG001 and psoriatic arthritis.

Conclusion

These findings provide potential targets for therapeutic interventions in inflammatory skin diseases.

Apigenin protects ischemic stroke by regulating intestinal microbiota homeostasis, regulates brain metabolic profile

Background and Objective

Ischemic stroke is a cerebrovascular disease with highly incidence. Previous research has demonstrated that apigenin provides protective effects against ischemic stroke. However, it remains unclear whether apigenin can regulate intestinal flora against ischemic stroke.

Methods

In this study, we evaluated the regulatory effects of apigenin on intestinal microbiota using a middle cerebral artery occlusion rat model. The protective impact of apigenin on brain damage in ischemic stroke rats was assessed through Nissl staining, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, we employed 16S rRNA sequencing to analyze intestinal contents and utilized non-targeted metabolomics to investigate the effects of apigenin on brain metabolites, thereby exploring its mechanism of action. AMPK levels were detected by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. The kit was used to detect oxidative stress and inflammation.

Results

The intervention with apigenin resulted in significant alterations in the intestinal flora, characterized by an increase in the abundance of probiotic species and a decrease in harmful flora, alongside notable changes in brain metabolite profiles. This protective effect is attributed to apigenin's promotion of AMPK expression and enhancement of energy metabolism in the context of ischemic stroke. In addition, apigenin improved oxidative stress and inflammation in ischemic stroke.

Conclusion

These findings suggest that apigenin exerts a protective effect on ischemic stroke through the AMPK signaling pathway by modulating intestinal flora and associated metabolites. Consequently, apigenin emerges as a therapeutic candidate warranting further investigation.

Multi-omics in Allergic Rhinitis: Mechanism Dissection and Precision Medicine

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common chronic inflammatory airway disease caused by inhaled allergens, and its prevalence has increased in recent decades. AR not only causes nasal leakage, itchy nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and allergic conjunctivitis but also induces asthma, as well as sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, memory loss, and other phenomena that seriously affect the patient's ability to study and work, lower their quality of life, and burden society. The current methods used to diagnose and treat AR are still far from ideal. Multi-omics technology can be used to comprehensively and systematically analyze the differentially expressed DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites and their biological functions in patients with AR. These capabilities allow for an in-depth understanding of the intrinsic pathogenic mechanism of AR, the ability to explore key cells and molecules that drive its progression, and to design personalized treatment for AR. This article summarizes the progress made in studying AR by use of genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics in order to illustrate the important role of multi-omics technologies in facilitating the precise diagnosis and treatment of AR.

Clinical Efficacy of Probiotics for Allergic Rhinitis: Results of an Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is an atopic disease affecting the upper airways of predisposed subjects exposed to aeroallergens. This study evaluates the effects of a mix of specific probiotics (L. acidophilus PBS066, L. rhamnosus LRH020, B. breve BB077, and B. longum subsp. longum BLG240) on symptoms and fecal microbiota modulation in subjects with AR. Methods: Probiotic effects were evaluated at the beginning (T0), at four and eight weeks of treatment (T1 and T2, respectively), and after four weeks of follow-up from the end of treatment (T3) (n = 19) compared to the placebo group (n = 22). AR symptoms and quality of life were evaluated by the mini rhinitis quality of life questionnaire (MiniRQLQ) at each time point. Allergic immune response and fecal microbiota compositions were assessed at T0, T2, and T3. The study was registered on Clinical-Trial.gov (NCT05344352). Results: The probiotic group showed significant improvement in the MiniRQLQ score at T1, T2, and T3 vs. T0 (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively). At T2, the probiotic group showed an increase in Dorea, which can be negatively associated with allergic diseases, and Fusicatenibacter, an intestinal bacterial genus with anti-inflammatory properties (p-value FDR-corrected = 0.0074 and 0.013, respectively). Conversely, at T3 the placebo group showed an increase in Bacteroides and Ruminococcaceae unassigned, (p-value FDR-corrected = 0.033 and 0.023, respectively) which can be associated with allergies, while the probiotic group showed a significative increase in the Prevotella/Bacteroides ratio (p-value FDR-corrected = 0.023). Conclusions: This probiotic formulation improves symptoms and quality of life in subjects with AR, promoting a shift towards anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic bacterial species in the intestinal microbiota.

Allergen-specific sublingual immunotherapy altered gut microbiota in patients with allergic rhinitis

Introduction

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) induces long-term immune tolerance to allergens and is effective for treating allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the impact of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) on gut microbiota from AR patients and its correlation with treatment efficacy remains unclear.

Methods

In the present study, we enrolled 24 AR patients sensitized to Dermatophagoides farinae (Der-f) and 6 healthy donors (HD). All AR patients received SLIT treatment using standardized Der-f drops. Stool samples were collected from AR patients before treatment, and 1- and 3-months post-treatment, as well as from HD, for metagenomic sequencing analysis.

Results

AR patients had significantly lower richness and diversity in gut microbiota compared to HD, with notable alterations in composition and function. Besides, three months post-SLIT treatment, significant changes in gut microbiota composition at the genus and species levels were observed in AR patients. Streptococcus parasanguinis_B and Streptococcus parasanguinis, which were significantly lower in AR patients compared to HD, increased notably after three months of treatment. LEfSe analysis identified these species as markers distinguishing HD from AR patients and AR patients pre- from post-SLIT treatment. Furthermore, changes in the relative abundance of S. parasanguinis_B were negatively correlated with changes in VAS scores but positively correlated with changes in RCAT scores, suggesting a positive correlation with effective SLIT treatment.

Discussion

SLIT treatment significantly alters the gut microbiota of AR patients, with S. parasanguinis_B potentially linked to its effectiveness. This study offers insights into SLIT mechanisms and suggests that specific strains may serve as biomarkers for predicting SLIT efficacy and as modulators for improving SLIT efficacy.

Probiotics combined with prebiotics alleviated seasonal allergic rhinitis by altering the composition and metabolic function of intestinal microbiota: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Background

Numerous studies have established that probiotics or prebiotics can relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR), but their mechanism of action remain underexplored. This study aimed to observe the clinical efficacy of probiotics combined with prebiotics in seasonal AR patients and explore their underlying mechanisms.

Methods

We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The test group was given probiotics combined with prebiotics, whereas the placebo group was administered simulated preparation for 90 days. Outcome measures included total nasal symptom score (TNSS), visual analog scale, rhinitis quality of life questionnaire, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and the rate and intensity of Loratadine use. Serum TNF-α, INF-γ, IL-4, IL-17, and IgE levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Intestinal microbiota was detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantitative PCR. Short-chain fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Results

106 participants (N = 53 for both test group and placebo group) completed the study. From baseline to day 91, mean difference between groups (MDBG) in the reduction of TNSS was -1.1 (-2.2, -0.1) (P = 0.04); MDBG in the increment of TNF-α was 7.1 pg/ml (95% CI: 0.8, 13.4, P = 0.03); the INF-γ level was significantly increased (P = 0.01), whereas that of IL-17 (P = 0.005) was significantly decreased in the test group, whilst mean difference within groups was not statistically significant in the placebo group; MDBG in the increment of acetate was 12.4% (95% CI: 7.1%, 17.6%, P <0.001). After the administration of probiotics and prebiotics, the composition and metabolic function of the intestinal microbiota were significantly altered and positively related to the beneficial effect on seasonal AR patients.

Conclusion

Probiotics combined with prebiotics administered for 90 days significantly attenuated the symptoms of seasonal AR patients, which may related to fluctuations in the composition and metabolic function of the intestinal microbiota and further ameliorating host immunity.

Probiotic Enterococcus Faecium Attenuated Atherosclerosis by Improving SCFAs Associated with Gut Microbiota in ApoE-/- Mice

Atherosclerosis, as the main root cause, makes cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) a substantial worldwide health concern. Inflammation and disrupted cholesterol metabolism are the primary clinical risk elements contributing to the onset of atherosclerosis. Few works exist on the improvement effect of gut microbiota on atherosclerosis. One specific probiotic strain, Enterococcus faecium NCIMB11508, has shown promise in mitigating inflammation. Consequently, it is critical to investigate its potential in reducing the progression of atherosclerosis. In our study, we administered E. faecium NCIMB11508 orally to ApoE-/- mice, resulting in a decrease in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Additionally, it demonstrated the ability to lower the inflammatory factor levels both in the aorta and blood serum while maintaining the integrity of the small intestine against lipopolysaccharides. Moreover, E. faecium NCIMB11508 had a beneficial impact on the gut microbiota composition by increasing the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which in turn helped to reduce inflammation and protect the intestine. The probiotic E. faecium NCIMB11508, according to our research, has a definitive capacity to prevent atherosclerosis progression by beneficially altering the SCFA composition in the gut microbiota of ApoE-/- mice.

Severe Allergy as a Chronic Inflammatory Condition From a Systems Biology Perspective

Persistent and unresolved inflammation is a common underlying factor observed in several and seemingly unrelated human diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Particularly, in atopic conditions, acute inflammatory responses such as those triggered by insect venom, food or drug allergies possess also a life-threatening potential. However, respiratory allergies predominantly exhibit late immune responses associated with chronic inflammation, that can eventually progress into a severe phenotype displaying similar features as those observed in other chronic inflammatory diseases, as is the case of uncontrolled severe asthma. This review aims to explore the different facets and systems involved in chronic allergic inflammation, including processes such as tissue remodelling and immune cell dysregulation, as well as genetic, metabolic and microbiota alterations, which are common to other inflammatory conditions. Our goal here was to deepen on the understanding of an entangled disease as is chronic allergic inflammation and expose potential avenues for the development of better diagnostic and intervention strategies.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Alleviates Allergic Rhinitis via CD4+ T Cell Modulation Through Gut Microbiota Restoration

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an allergic condition of the upper respiratory tract with a complex pathogenesis, including epithelial barrier disruption, immune regulation, and gut microbiota, which is not yet fully understood. Gut microbiota is closely linked to allergic diseases, including AR. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has recently been recognized as a potentially effective therapy for allergic diseases. However, the efficacy and mechanism of action of FMT in AR remain unknown. Herein, we aimed to observe the implications of gut microbiota on epithelial barrier function and T cell homeostasis, as well as the effect of FMT in AR, using the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mice. The intestinal microbiota of recipient mice was cleared using an antibiotic cocktail; thereafter, FMT was performed. Subsequently, the nasal symptom scores and histopathological features of colon and nasal mucosa tissues of mice were monitored, and serum OVA-sIgE and cytokines of IL-4, IFNγ, IL-17A, and IL-10 cytokine concentrations were examined. Thereafter, tight junction protein and CD4+ T cell-related transcription factor and cytokine expressions were observed in the colon and nasal mucosa, and changes in the expression of PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NFκB signaling pathway were detected by WB assay in each group. Fecal DNA was extracted from the four mice groups for high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. FMT ameliorated nasal symptoms and reduced nasal mucosal inflammation in AR mice. Moreover, according to 16S rRNA sequencing, FMT restored the disordered gut microbiota in AR mice. Following FMT, ZO-1 and claudin-1 and Th1/Th2/Th17-related transcription factor and cytokine expressions were upregulated, whereas Treg cell-related Foxp3 and IL-10 expressions were downregulated. Mechanistic studies have revealed that FMT also inhibited PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NF-κB pathway protein phosphorylation in AR mouse tissues. FMT alleviates allergic inflammation in AR by repairing the epithelial barrier and modulating CD4+ T cell balance and exerts anti-inflammatory effects through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NF-κB signaling pathways. Moreover, gut microbiota disorders are involved in AR pathogenesis. Disturbed gut microbiota causes an altered immune-inflammatory state in mice and increases susceptibility to AR. This study suggested the regulatory role of the gut-nose axis in the pathogenesis of AR is an emerging field, which provides novel directions and ideas for the treatment of AR.

Multi-omics combined to explore the purging mechanism of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex

Rhei Radix et Rhizoma and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex have been used together to treat constipation in the clinical practices for more than 2000 years. Nonetheless, their compatibility mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the amelioration of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma combined with Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex on constipation was systematically and comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that their compatibility could markedly shorten gastrointestinal transport time, increase fecal water content and frequency of defecation, improve gastrointestinal hormone disorders and protect colon tissue of constipation rats compared with the single drug. Furthermore, according to 16S rRNA sequencing in conjunction with UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, the combination of two herbal medications could greatly raise the number of salutary bacteria (Lachnospiraceae, Romboutsia and Subdoligranulum) while decreasing the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Erysipelatoclostridiaceae). And two herb drugs could markedly improve the disorder of fecal metabolic profiles. A total of 7 different metabolites associated with constipation were remarkably shifted by the compatibility of two herbs, which were mainly related to arachidonic acid metabolism, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and other metabolic ways. Thus, the regulation of intestinal microbiome and its metabolism could be a potential target for Rhei Radix et Rhizoma and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex herb pair to treat constipation. Furthermore, the multi-omics approach utilized in this study, which integrated the microbiome and metabolome, had potential for investigating the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicines.

Association Between Gut and Nasal Microbiota and Allergic Rhinitis: A Systematic Review

Allergic rhinitis is a chronic non-infectious inflammation of the nasal mucosa mediated by specific IgE. Recently, the human microbiome has drawn broad interest as a potential new target for treating this condition. This paper succinctly summarizes the main findings of 17 eligible studies published by February 2024, involving 1044 allergic rhinitis patients and 954 healthy controls from 5 countries. These studies examine differences in the human microbiome across important mucosal interfaces, including the nasal and intestinal areas, between patients and controls. Overall, findings suggest variations in the gut microbiota between allergic rhinitis patients and healthy individuals, although the specific bacterial taxa that significantly changed were not always consistent across studies. Due to the limited scope of existing research and patient coverage, the relationship between the nasal microbiome and allergic rhinitis remains inconclusive. The article discusses the potential immune-regulating role of the gut microbiome in allergic rhinitis. Further well-designed clinical trials with large-scale recruitment of allergic rhinitis patients are encouraged.

Systematic review of the association between short-chain fatty acids and allergic diseases

We performed a systematic review to investigate the current evidence on the association between allergic diseases and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are microbially produced and suggested as one mechanism on how gut microbiome affects the risk of allergic diseases. Medline, Embase and Web of Science were searched from data inception until September 2022. We identified 37 papers, of which 17 investigated prenatal or early childhood SCFAs and the development of allergic diseases in childhood, and 20 assessed SCFAs in patients with pre-existing allergic diseases. Study design, study populations, outcome definition, analysis method and reporting of the results varied between papers. Overall, there was some evidence showing that the three main SCFAs (acetate, propionate and butyrate) in the first few years of life had a protective effect against allergic diseases, especially for atopic dermatitis, wheeze or asthma and IgE-mediated food allergy in childhood. The association between each SCFA and allergic disease appeared to be different by disease and the age of assessment. Further research that can determine the potentially timing specific effect of each SCFA will be useful to investigate how SCFAs can be used in treatment or in prevention against allergic diseases.

de Vos W. Early-life gut microbiota associates with allergic rhinitis during 13-year follow-up in a Finnish probiotic intervention cohort

Perinatal and early-life factors reported to affect risk of allergic diseases may be mediated by changes in the gut microbiota. Here, we explored the associations between the infant gut microbiota and allergic morbidity in childhood until 13 years of age in a subgroup of the FLORA probiotic intervention cohort. A mixture of four probiotic strains with galacto-oligosaccharides was administrated to the mothers from the 36th week of the pregnancy and later to their infants until 6 months of age. The infants were monitored for the manifestations of atopic eczema, food allergy, allergic rhinitis, and asthma by a pediatrician at 2 and 5 years of age; the allergic status was subsequently verified by a questionnaire at 10 and 13 years of age. The fecal microbiota at 3 months was profiled by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing targeting the V3-V4 region, with and without adjusting for potentially important early-life factors. Overall, the positive diagnosis for allergic rhinitis between 2 and 13 years was associated with microbiota composition both in non-adjusted and adjusted models. This association was more pronounced in children born to one parent with confirmed atopic diseases compared to those who had two atopic parents and was characterized by a lower relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Escherichia/Shigella spp. and a higher proportion of Bacteroides. While the probiotic and galacto-oligosaccharides intervention in the entire cohort was previously shown to reduce the prevalence of eczema to a certain extent, no associations were found between the 3-month gut microbiota and childhood eczema in the studied sub-cohort.IMPORTANCEAllergic diseases have increased in prevalence during the past decades globally. Although probiotics have been considered a promising strategy for preventing certain allergy related symptoms, studies connecting the infant gut microbiota and later life allergic morbidity in various populations remain limited. Electroacupuncture intervention alleviates depressive-like behaviors and regulates gut microbiome in a mouse model of depression

Electroacupuncture (EA) is a neuroregulatory therapy for depression. Nonetheless, the effects of EA on the gut microbiome in mice models of depression are not well established. Here, using a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model in mice, we evaluated the antidepressant effects of EA and changes in gut microbiota with behavioral tests and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results found that EA increased the time spent in the center area of the open-field test and the percentage of sucrose preference and reduced the immobility time in the tail suspension test in CUMS-treated mice. Furthermore, the genus Lachnoclostridium, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-002 and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group were enriched in the CUMS group, which was positively correlated with depressive-like behaviors. Whereas phylum Actinobacteria and genus Allobaculum, Bifidobacterium, Dubosiella, Rikenella and Ileibacterium were enriched in the EA and CUMS + EA groups, all of which were negatively correlated with depressive-like behaviors. This study characterizes gut microbiota under EA treatment and provides new insights into the association of anti-depressive-like effects of EA and gut microbiota.

Notch Signaling Inhibition Alleviates Allergies Caused by Antarctic Krill Tropomyosin through Improving Th1/Th2 Imbalance and Modulating Gut Microbiota

Antarctic krill tropomyosin (AkTM) has been shown in mice to cause IgE-mediated food allergy. The objective of this work was to investigate the role of Notch signaling in AkTM-sensitized mice, as well as to determine the changes in gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the allergic mice. An AkTM-induced food allergy mouse model was built and N-[N-(3,5-difluorophenacetyl)-L-alanyl]-S-phenylglycine t-butyl ester (DAPT) was used as an γ-secretase inhibitor to inhibit the activation of Notch signaling. Food allergy indices, some key transcription factors, histologic alterations in the small intestine, and changes in gut microbiota composition were examined. The results showed that DAPT inhibited Notch signaling, which reduced AkTM-specific IgE, suppressed mast cell degranulation, decreased IL-4 but increased IFN-γ production, and alleviated allergic symptoms. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting analyses revealed that expressions of Hes-1, Gata3, and IL-4 were down-regulated after DAPT treatment, accompanied by increases in T-bet and IFN-γ, indicating that Notch signaling was active in AkTM-sensitized mice and blocking it could reverse the Th1/Th2 imbalance. Expressions of key transcription factors revealed that Notch signaling could promote Th2 cell differentiation in sensitized mice. Furthermore, 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that AkTM could alter the diversity and composition of gut microbiota in mice, leading to increases in inflammation-inducing bacteria such as Enterococcus and Escherichia-Shigella. Correlation analysis indicated that reduced SCFA concentrations in AkTM-allergic mice may be related to decreases in certain SCFA-producing bacteria, such as Clostridia_UCG-014. The changes in gut microbiota and SCFAs could be partially restored by DAPT treatment. Our findings showed that inhibiting Notch signaling could alleviate AkTM-induced food allergy by correcting Th1/Th2 imbalance and modulating the gut microbiota.

A new perspective on gut-lung axis affected through resident microbiome and their implications on immune response in respiratory diseases

The highly diverse microbial ecosystem of the human body colonizes the gastrointestinal tract has a profound impact on the host's immune, metabolic, endocrine, and other physiological processes, which are all interconnected. Specifically, gut microbiota has been found to play a crucial role in facilitating the adaptation and initiation of immune regulatory response through the gastrointestinal tract affecting the other distal mucosal sites such as lungs. A tightly regulated lung-gut axis during respiratory ailments may influence the various molecular patterns that instructs priming the disease severity to dysregulate the normal function. This review provides a comprehensive summary of current research on gut microbiota dysbiosis in respiratory diseases including asthma, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, COPD during infections and cancer. A complex-interaction among gut microbiome, associated metabolites, cytokines, and chemokines regulates the protective immune response activating the mucosal humoral and cellular response. This potential mechanism bridges the regulation patterns through the gut-lung axis. This paper aims to advance the understanding of the crosstalk of gut-lung microbiome during infection, could lead to strategize to modulate the gut microbiome as a treatment plan to improve bad prognosis in various respiratory diseases.

Gut microbiota and autism spectrum disorders: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study

Background

In recent years, observational studies have provided evidence supporting a potential association between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and gut microbiota. However, the causal effect of gut microbiota on ASD remains unknown.

Methods

We identified the summary statistics of 206 gut microbiota from the MiBioGen study, and ASD data were obtained from the latest Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS). We then performed Mendelian randomization (MR) to determine a causal relationship between the gut microbiota and ASD using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, simple mode, MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted model. Furthermore, we used Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO), and leave-one-out analysis to identify heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Moreover, the Benjamin-Hochberg approach (FDR) was employed to assess the strength of the connection between exposure and outcome. We performed reverse MR analysis on the gut microbiota that were found to be causally associated with ASD in the forward MR analysis to examine the causal relationships. The enrichment analyses were used to analyze the biological function at last.

Results

Based on the results of IVW results, genetically predicted family Prevotellaceae and genus Turicibacter had a possible positive association with ASD (IVW OR=1.14, 95% CI: 1.00-1.29, P=3.7×10-2), four gut microbiota with a potential protective effect on ASD: genus Dorea (OR=0.81, 95% CI: 0.69-0.96, P=1.4×10-2), genus Ruminiclostridium5 (OR=0.81, 95% CI: 0.69-0.96, P=1.5×10-2), genus Ruminococcus1 (OR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.70-0.98, P=2.8×10-2), and genus Sutterella (OR=0.82, 95% CI: 0.68-0.99, P=3.6×10-2). After FDR multiple-testing correction we further observed that there were two gut microbiota still have significant relationship with ASD: family Prevotellaceae (IVW OR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.09-1.40, P=9.2×10-4) was strongly positively correlated with ASD and genus RuminococcaceaeUCG005 (IVW OR=0.78, 95% CI: 0.67-0.89, P=6.9×10-4) was strongly negatively correlated with ASD. The sensitivity analysis excluded the influence of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy.

Conclusion

Our findings reveal a causal association between several gut microbiomes and ASD. These results deepen our comprehension of the role of gut microbiota in ASD's pathology, providing the foothold for novel ideas and theoretical frameworks to prevent and treat this patient population in the future.

Altered intestinal microbiota enhances adenoid hypertrophy by disrupting the immune balance

Introduction

Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is a common upper respiratory disorder in children. Disturbances of gut microbiota have been implicated in AH. However, the interplay of alteration of gut microbiome and enlarged adenoids remains elusive.

Methods

119 AH children and 100 healthy controls were recruited, and microbiome profiling of fecal samples in participants was performed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Fecal microbiome transplantation (FMT) was conducted to verify the effects of gut microbiota on immune response in mice.

Results

In AH individuals, only a slight decrease of diversity in bacterial community was found, while significant changes of microbial composition were observed between these two groups. Compared with HCs, decreased abundances of Akkermansia, Oscillospiraceae and Eubacterium coprostanoligenes genera and increased abundances of Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus gnavus genera were revealed in AH patients. The abundance of Bacteroides remained stable with age in AH children. Notably, a microbial marker panel of 8 OTUs were identified, which discriminated AH from HC individuals with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9851 in the discovery set, and verified in the geographically different validation set, achieving an AUC of 0.9782. Furthermore, transfer of mice with fecal microbiota from AH patients dramatically reduced the proportion of Treg subsets within peripheral blood and nasal-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) and promoted the expansion of Th2 cells in NALT.

Conclusion

These findings highlight the effect of the altered gut microbiota in the AH pathogenesis.

Lactiplantibacillus biofilm and planktonic cells ameliorate ulcerative colitis in mice via immunoregulatory activity, gut metabolism and microbiota modulation

Since ulcerative colitis (UC) has become a global concern, Lactiplantibacillus is considered an effective, safe strategy for alleviating intestinal inflammation in UC patients. The most advanced fourth-generation probiotics involve beneficial bacteria enclosed in biofilms with multiple advantages. However, the difference between the effect of probiotic biofilm and planktonic cells on UC remains unclear. This study indicated that the biofilm cells of Lactiplantibacillus LR-1 were more successful in increasing the colon length, relieving intestinal inflammation, and repairing colon damage, regulating the host immunity than the planktonic cells. Furthermore, the LR-1 biofilm cells helped prevent a decline in the Eubacterium hallii and Salinimicrobium levels and increased Kocuria and Candidatus Bacilloplasma abundance. Untargeted metabolomics analysis results suggested that the LR-1 biofilm was more successful in promoting the intestinal metabolism recovery of the UC mice than the planktonic cells. Finally, the phenotype-microbiota-metabolism network was conducted to reveal the relationship between these factors.

Short-chain fatty acids in diseases

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the main metabolites produced by bacterial fermentation of dietary fibre in the gastrointestinal tract. The absorption of SCFAs is mediated by substrate transporters, such as monocarboxylate transporter 1 and sodium-coupled monocarboxylate transporter 1, which promote cellular metabolism. An increasing number of studies have implicated metabolites produced by microorganisms as crucial executors of diet-based microbial influence on the host. SCFAs are important fuels for intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and represent a major carbon flux from the diet, that is decomposed by the gut microbiota. SCFAs play a vital role in multiple molecular biological processes, such as promoting the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 by IECs to inhibit the elevation of blood glucose, increasing the expression of G protein-coupled receptors such as GPR41 and GPR43, and inhibiting histone deacetylases, which participate in the regulation of the proliferation, differentiation, and function of IECs. SCFAs affect intestinal motility, barrier function, and host metabolism. Furthermore, SCFAs play important regulatory roles in local, intermediate, and peripheral metabolisms. Acetate, propionate, and butyrate are the major SCFAs, they are involved in the regulation of immunity, apoptosis, inflammation, and lipid metabolism. Herein, we review the diverse functional roles of this major class of bacterial metabolites and reflect on their ability to affect intestine, metabolic, and other diseases. Video Abstract.

Microbial signature of intestine in children with allergic rhinitis

INTRODUCTION

Previous studies have found that unique patterns of gut microbial colonization in infancy associated with the development of allergic diseases. However, there is no research on the gut microbiota characteristics of AR children in Chinese Mainland.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the changes of gut microbial of AR children in Chinese Mainland and evaluate the correlation between gut microbial and clinical indexes.

METHODS

In this clinical study, fecal samples from 24 AR children and 25 healthy control children (HCs) were comparative via next generation sequencing of the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Analyzed the relationship between clinical features and gut microbial using Spearman correlation.

RESULTS

Compared to HCs, AR children showed significant decreases in Shannon index and significant increases in Simpson index at both the family and genera levels (all p < 0.05). In terms of bacterial composition, at the phylum level, AR children had higher abundance of Bacteroidetes than that in the HCs group (p < 0.05) and were significantly positively correlated with TNSS (p < 0.05). At the family level, AR children had higher abundance of Prevotellaceae and Enterobacteriaceae higher than that in the HCs group (all p < 0.05) and had a significantly positive correlation with TNSS, eosinophils (EOS) and total immunoglobulin E (tIgE) (all p < 0.05). At the genus level, reduced abundance of Agathobacter, Parasutterella, Roseburia and Subdoligranulum were also observed in the AR cohorts compared to HCs (all p < 0.05) and significantly negatively associated with TNSS, EOS, tIgE, QOL, and FeNO (all p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

AR children in Chinese Mainland were characterized by reduced microbial diversity and distinguished microbial characteristics in comparison with HCs. The observations of this study offer proof that distinctive gut microbiota profiles were present in AR children and necessitate further investigation in the form of mechanistic studies.

Understanding the ecological effects of the fungicide difenoconazole on soil and Enchytraeus crypticus gut microbiome

Increasing knowledge of the impacts of pesticides on soil ecological communities is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of the functional changes in the global agroecosystem industry. In this study, we examined microbial community shifts in the gut of the soil-dwelling organism Enchytraeus crypticus and functional shifts in the soil microbiome (bacteria and viruses) after 21 d of exposure to difenoconazole, one of the main fungicides in intensified agriculture. Our results demonstrated reduced body weight and increased oxidative stress levels of E. crypticus under difenoconazole treatment. Meanwhile, difenoconazole not only altered the composition and structure of the gut microbial community, but also interfered with the soil-soil fauna microecology stability by impairing the abundance of beneficial bacteria. Using soil metagenomics, we revealed that bacterial genes encoding detoxification and viruses encoding carbon cycle genes exhibited a dependent enrichment in the toxicity of pesticides via metabolism. Taken together, these findings advance the understanding of the ecotoxicological impact of residual difenoconazole on the soil-soil fauna micro-ecology, and the ecological importance of virus-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes under pesticide stress.

Fecal and serum metabolomic signatures and gut microbiota characteristics of allergic rhinitis mice model

Background

The etiology of allergic rhinitis (AR) is complicated. Traditional therapy of AR still has challenges, such as low long-term treatment compliance, unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes, and a high financial burden. It is urgent to investigate the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis from different perspectives and explore brand-new possible preventative or treatment initiatives.

Objective

The aim is to apply a multi-group technique and correlation analysis to explore more about the pathogenesis of AR from the perspectives of gut microbiota, fecal metabolites, and serum metabolism.

Methods

Thirty BALB/c mice were randomly divided into the AR and Con(control) groups. A standardized Ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mouse model was established by intraperitoneal OVA injection followed by nasal excitation. We detected the serum IL-4, IL-5, and IgE by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), evaluated the histological characteristics of the nasal tissues by the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and observed the nasal symptoms (rubs and sneezes) to evaluate the reliability of the AR mouse model. The colonic NF-κB protein was detected by Western Blot, and the colonic histological characteristics were observed by the H&E staining to evaluate inflammation of colon tissue. We analyzed the V3 and V4 regions of the 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) gene from the feces (colon contents) through 16S rDNA sequencing technology. Untargeted metabolomics was used to examine fecal and serum samples to find differential metabolites. Finally, through comparison and correlation analysis of differential gut microbiota, fecal metabolites, and serum metabolites, we further explore the overall impact of AR on gut microbiota, fecal metabolites, and host serum metabolism and its correlation.

Results

In the AR group, the IL-4, IL-5, IgE, eosinophil infiltration, and the times of rubs and sneezes were significantly higher than those in the Con group, indicating the successful establishment of the AR model. No differences in diversity were detected between the AR and Con groups. However, there were modifications in the microbiota's structure. At the phylum level, the proportion of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria in the AR group increased significantly, while the proportion of Bacteroides decreased significantly, and the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroides was higher. The key differential genera, such as Ruminococcus, were increased significantly in the AR group, while the other key differential genera, such as Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Prevotella, were significantly decreased in the Con group. Untargeted metabolomics analysis identified 28 upregulated and 4 downregulated differential metabolites in feces and 11 upregulated and 16 downregulated differential metabolites in serum under AR conditions. Interestingly, one of the significant difference metabolites, α-Linoleic acid (ALA), decreased consistently in feces and serum of AR. KEGG functional enrichment analysis and correlation analysis showed a close relationship between differential serum metabolites and fecal metabolites, and changes in fecal and serum metabolic patterns are associated with altered gut microbiota in AR. The NF-κB protein and inflammatory infiltration of the colon increased considerably in the AR group.

Conclusion

Our study reveals that AR alters fecal and serum metabolomic signatures and gut microbiota characteristics, and there is a striking correlation between the three. The correlation analysis of the microbiome and metabolome provides a deeper understanding of AR's pathogenesis, which may provide a theoretical basis for AR's potential prevention and treatment strategies.

International consensus statement on allergy and rhinology: Allergic rhinitis - 2023

BACKGROUND

In the 5 years that have passed since the publication of the 2018 International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Allergic Rhinitis (ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2018), the literature has expanded substantially. The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update presents 144 individual topics on allergic rhinitis (AR), expanded by over 40 topics from the 2018 document. Originally presented topics from 2018 have also been reviewed and updated. The executive summary highlights key evidence-based findings and recommendation from the full document.

METHODS

ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 employed established evidence-based review with recommendation (EBRR) methodology to individually evaluate each topic. Stepwise iterative peer review and consensus was performed for each topic. The final document was then collated and includes the results of this work.

RESULTS

ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 includes 10 major content areas and 144 individual topics related to AR. For a substantial proportion of topics included, an aggregate grade of evidence is presented, which is determined by collating the levels of evidence for each available study identified in the literature. For topics in which a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention is considered, a recommendation summary is presented, which considers the aggregate grade of evidence, benefit, harm, and cost.

CONCLUSION

The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update provides a comprehensive evaluation of AR and the currently available evidence. It is this evidence that contributes to our current knowledge base and recommendations for patient evaluation and treatment.

Early exposure to infections increases the risk of allergic rhinitis-a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to provide evidence for early life care by meta-analyzing the relationship between infection during pregnancy and up to 2 years of age and the risk of subsequent allergic rhinitis (AR).

METHODS

Published studies up to April 2022 were systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, CNKI, Wanfang Database, and VIP. Literature screening, including quality assessment, was performed, and the effect values (OR, HR, RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of infection during pregnancy and up to 2 years of age and allergic rhinitis were extracted from each qualified study.

RESULTS

In total, 5 studies with a sample size of 82,256 reported the relationship between infection during pregnancy and offspring AR. Meta-analysis showed that maternal infection during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of childhood AR in offspring (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.08-1.67). Altogether, 13 studies with a sample size of 78,426 reported evidence of an association between infection within 2 years of age and subsequent AR in children. A pooled meta-analysis of all studies showed that early infection within 2 years of age was closely associated with childhood AR (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.12-1.40), especially upper respiratory tract infection (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06-1.65) and gastrointestinal infections (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.01-1.86), but ear infection showed similar results in the cohort study (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04-1.22).

CONCLUSION

Current evidence suggests that infection during pregnancy, early upper respiratory infection, gastrointestinal infections and ear infection within 2 years of age would increase the risk of AR in children. Therefore, the prevention of infection during pregnancy and in infancy and young children needs to be emphasized.

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 ameliorates DSS-induced colitis by maintaining the intestinal barrier, regulating inflammatory cytokines, and modifying gut microbiota

B. longum subsp. infantis is a subspecies of Bifidobacterium longum, and very few strains are shown to have immunomodulatory effects. In the present study, the improvement of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis by four B. longum subsp. infantis strains was compared. The results showed that B. longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 could significantly decrease disease activity index (DAI), inhibit weight loss and colon shortening, and attenuate colon tissue damage in DSS-induced colitis mice. And B. longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 intervention improved the integrity of intestinal tight junctions, relieved mucus layer damage and inhibited epithelial cell apoptosis, thereby maintaining the intestinal barrier. Additionally, B. longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 significantly affected the levels of inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10 in the colon, thus relieving inflammation in colitis mice. Furthermore, B. longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 could ameliorate gut microbiota disturbance caused by DSS exposure and increase the level of butyric acid in cecal contents. In general, these findings suggested that B. longum subsp. infantis FJSYZ1M3 alleviated DSS-induced colitis by maintaining the intestinal barrier, regulating inflammatory cytokines, and modifying the gut microbiota.

Gut microbiota diversity in human strongyloidiasis differs little in two different regions in endemic areas of Thailand

Human gastrointestinal helminthic infections have a direct and/or indirect effect on the composition of the host gut microbial flora. Here, we investigated the effect of infection with a soil-transmitted intestinal nematode, Strongyloides stercoralis, on the gut microbiota of the human host. We also investigated whether composition of the microbiota in infected persons might vary across endemic regions. Fecal samples were obtained from volunteers from two areas endemic for strongyloidiasis, Khon Kaen Province in northeastern Thailand and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in southern Thailand. Samples from Khon Kaen were from infected (SsNE) and uninfected (NegNE) individuals. Similarly, samples from the latter province were from infected (SsST) and uninfected (NegST) individuals. DNA sequences of the V3-V4 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene were obtained from the fecal samples. No statistical difference in alpha diversity between groups in terms of richness or diversity were found. Statistical difference in beta diversity was observed only between NegNE and NegST. Some significant differences in species abundance were noted between geographical isolates. The SsNE group had a higher abundance of Tetragenococcus holophilus than did the SsST group, whereas Bradyrhizobium sp. was less abundant in the SsNE than the SsST group. For the uninfected groups, the NegNE had a higher abundance of T. holophilus than the NegST group. Our data showed that S. stercoralis infection leads to only minor alterations in the relative abundance of individual bacterial species in the human gut: no detectable effect was observed on community structure and diversity.

Characteristics of gut microbiota in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome in Northern China

This study analyzes and compares the structure and diversity of gut microbiota in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) in Northern China to healthy individuals to identify clinical features associated with dysbiosis. We included 60 Chinese pSS patients and 50 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. DNA was extracted from stool samples and subjected to 16S ribosomal RNA gene analysis (V3-V4) for intestinal dysbiosis. In addition, patients were examined for laboratory and serological pSS features. A Spearman’s correlation analysis was performed to assess correlations between individual bacteria taxa and clinical characteristics. The alpha-diversity (Chao1 and Shannon Index) and beta-diversity (unweighted UniFrac distances) of the gut microbiota differed significantly between pSS patients and healthy controls. Further analysis showed that several gut opportunistic pathogens (Bacteroides, Megamonas, and Veillonella) were significantly more abundant in pSS patients and positively correlated with their clinical indicators. In contrast, some probiotic genera (Collinsella, unidentified_Ruminococcaceae, Romboutsia, and Dorea) were significantly decreased in pSS patients and negatively correlated with their clinical indicators. Therefore, pSS patients in Northern China showed a dysbiotic intestinal microbiome enriched for potentially pathogenic genera that might be associated with autoimmune disease.

Vancomycin-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis aggravates allergic rhinitis in mice by altered short-chain fatty acids

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to explore how gut microbiota dysbiosis affects allergic rhinitis (AR) and whether short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) play a role in this process.

METHODS

A mouse gut microbiota dysbiosis model was established by adding vancomycin to drinking water for 2 weeks before ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization. Then an OVA-alum AR mouse model was established by intraperitoneal OVA injection followed by nasal excitation. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was performed to observe pathological changes in nasal and colon tissues of AR mice. Serum levels of total-IgE, OVA-sIgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and TGF-β1 were measured. The composition and diversity of the mouse gut microbiota were observed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Levels of SCFAs in feces were determined using SCFA-targeted metabolomics. Sodium butyrate (NaB) was added daily to mice on a low-fiber basal diet 2 weeks before the first sensitization, until the end of the study.

RESULTS

After gut microbiota dysbiosis, serum levels of the total IgE, OVA-sIgE, IL-4, and IL-5 in AR mice were significantly increased, compared with the control group. The composition and diversity of gut microbiota were significantly altered after gut microbiota dysbiosis, with the fecal SCFAs significantly reduced as well. The reduced bacterial genera after gut microbiota dysbiosis, such as Ruminococcus and Lactobacillus, were significantly and positively correlated with SCFAs. In contrast, the increased genera in the Van group, such as Escherichia-Shigella and Klebsiella, were significantly negatively correlated with SCFAs in feces. NaB treatment significantly reduced total-IgE, OVA-sIgE, IL-4, and IL-5 levels in serum, and inflammatory infiltration of the nasal and colon mucosa. In addition, serum levels of IL-10 and TGF-β1 increased significantly after NaB treatment. Foxp3 protein in the colon was upregulated considerably after NaB intervention.

CONCLUSION

Vancomycin-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis increased susceptibility and severity of AR, which is significantly related to reduced SCFA-producing bacteria, fecal SCFAs, and specific bacterial taxa. In addition, it was found that NaB alleviated low dietary fiber base-fed symptoms and immune status in AR mice.

Gut Microbiota in Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with autoimmune pathogenic characteristics and is caused by chronic inflammation, which results in uncontrolled keratinocyte growth and defective differentiation. The link between the gut microbiota and immune system regulation opened a novel angle to understand the pathogenesis of many chronic multifactorial diseases, including psoriasis. Current evidence suggests that modulation of the gut microbiota, both through dietary approaches and through supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics, could represent a novel therapeutic approach. The present work aims to highlight the latest scientific evidence regarding the microbiome alterations of psoriatic patients, as well as state of the art insights in terms of microbiome-targeted therapies as promising preventive and therapeutic tools for psoriasis.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri Attenuates Atopic Dermatitis via Changes in Gut Bacteria and Indole Derivatives from Tryptophan Metabolism

Gut bacteria are closely associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD) due to their immunoregulatory function. Indole derivatives, produced by gut bacteria metabolizing tryptophan, are ligands to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which plays a critical role in attenuating AD symptoms. Limosilactobacillus reuteri, a producer of indole derivatives, regulates mucosal immunity via activating the AHR signaling pathway. However, the effective substance and mechanism of L. reuteri in the amelioration of AD remain to be elucidated. In this research, we found that L. reuteri DYNDL22M62 significantly improved AD-like symptoms in mice by suppressing IgE levels and the expressions of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), IL-4, and IL-5. L. reuteri DYNDL22M62 induced an increase in the production of indole lactic acid (ILA) and indole propionic acid (IPA) via targeted tryptophan metabolic analysis and the expression of AHR in mice. Furthermore, L. reuteri DYNDL22M62 increased the proportions of Romboutsia and Ruminococcaceae NK4A214 group, which were positively related to ILA, but decreased Dubosiella, which was negatively related to IPA. Collectively, L. reuteri DYNDL22M62 with the role of modulating gut bacteria and the production of indole derivatives may attenuate AD via activating AHR in mice.

Effect of Probiotics on Respiratory Tract Allergic Disease and Gut Microbiota

Allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction triggered by specific cell or antibody-mediated immune mechanisms. Allergies have increased in industrialized countries in recent decades. The rise in allergic respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic asthma (AA) is a potential threat to public health. Searches were conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar and Medline using the following key terms: allergic rhinitis OR asthma AND probiotics, allergic airway inflammation AND immune disorders, probiotics OR gut microbiota AND allergic disease, probiotics AND inflammatory. Studies from all years were included, specifically those published within the last 10 years. Some review articles and their reference lists were searched to identify related articles. The role of microbiota in respiratory allergic diseases has attracted more and more attention. Pieces of evidence suggested that the development of allergic diseases causes a possible imbalance in the composition of the gut microbiota. Compared to colonized mice, germ-free mice exhibit exaggerated allergic airway responses, suggesting that microbial host interactions play an important role in the development of allergic diseases. Probiotics modulate both the innate and adaptive inflammatory immune responses, often used as dietary supplements to provide health benefits in gastrointestinal disorders. Probiotics may serve as immunomodulators and activators of host defense pathways. Besides, oral probiotics can modulate the immune response in the respiratory system. Recently, studies in humans and animals have demonstrated the role of probiotic in RA and AA. To understand the characterization, microbiota, and the potential role of probiotics intervention of AA/AR, this review provides an overview of clinical features of AA and AR, probiotics for the prevention and treatment of AR, AA, changes in gut microbiota, and their mechanisms of action.
