Abstract
Multifunctional nanocomposites Ag/Al2O3/TiO2@β-cyclodextrin-graphene oxide (AATG) incorporating graphene oxide sheets, TiO2, and Ag/Al2O3 nanoparticles were prepared in two steps. We benefited from the inherent properties of β-cyclodextrin to create a stable aqueous graphene solution capable of self-assembling in situ grown TiO2 nanoparticles on graphene nanosheets. Ag/Al2O3 catalysts with a high surface-to-volume ratio were prepared by a combustion technique in solution with urea as a new fuel. The synthesized nanoparticles were also characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analysis, and BJH pore analysis. FE-SEM was used to evaluate the morphology of β-cyclodextrin-graphene oxide, Ag/Al2O3 and AATG nanoplatforms. This research examined the use of AATG as a novel nanocomposite for removing methylene blue from water and compared its effectiveness with that of TiO2@β-cyclodextrin-graphene oxide (TG) as an intermediate material to assess the impact of the final composite and its components on absorption. The effect of pH, temperature, time, and dye concentration on the reaction rate was investigated. The results showed that at pH above 4, the adsorption rate of MB by AATG gradually increased to about 98%. The results also show that methylene blue is more effectively removed at higher temperatures, implying that the adsorption is temperature dependent and the elimination process is endothermic. The adsorption kinetics, isothermal studies, and thermodynamic analysis were also evaluated. The adsorption data showed excellent agreement with pseudo-second order models (R2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir isotherm. The AATG nanocomposites showed excellent adsorption activity, making them potential candidates for water treatment.

Abstract
Due to the ever-growing global population, it is necessary to develop highly effective processes that minimize the impact of human activities and consumption on the environment. The levels of organic and inorganic contaminants have rapidly increased in recent years, posing a threat to ecosystems. Removing these toxic pollutants from the environment is a challenging task that requires physical, chemical, and biological methods. An effective solution involves the use of novel engineered materials, such as silica-based nanostructured materials, which exhibit a high removal capacity for various pollutants. The starting materials are also thermally and mechanically stable, allowing for easy design and development at the nanoscale through versatile functionalization procedures, enabling their effective use in pollutant capture. However, improvements concerning mechanical properties or applicability for repeated cycles may be required to refine their structural features. This review focuses on hybrid/composite polymer-silica nanostructured materials. The state of the art in nanomaterial synthesis, different techniques of functionalization, and polymer grafting are described. Furthermore, it explores the application of polymer-modified nanostructured materials for the capture of heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives, drugs, and other organic compounds. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for future research aimed at advancing the application of polymer-silica nanostructured materials in the efficiency of pollutant uptake.

Abstract
Ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with controlled mesopore lengths and volumes were synthesized and investigated to remove the model dye methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The pore size, specific surface area, pore volume, and pore length of OMCs (CMK-3, sCMK-3, and sCMK-5) were analyzed and benchmarked against commercial activated carbon (AC). CMK-3 and sCMK-3 had narrow pore size distributions (PSDs) centered at ∼4.4 nm, whereas the PSD of sCMK-5 was bimodal, derived from the same pores as CMK-3 (∼4.4 nm) and the inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes (∼5.8 nm). The pore length decreased from 743 nm for CMK-3 to 173 nm for sCMK-3 and 169 nm for sCMK-5, facilitating the MB accessibility and efficient utilization of internal mesopores. The MB adsorption on the prepared adsorbents was well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.999), and the initial adsorption rate (h) on sCMK-5 was 34.07-fold faster than that on commercial AC. The Langmuir model adequately explained the equilibrium adsorption data, and the increase in the Langmuir maximal adsorption capacity (qm) of the OMCs was proportional to the specific surface area. The MB adsorption on sCMK-5 was endothermic and spontaneous, and proceeded primarily through physical adsorption as well as chemisorption reacting with oxygen atoms in hydroxyl groups. The prepared adsorbents were also suitable for polishing textile wastewater containing color-causing substances along with the background organic matter. These OMCs are promising for treating wastewater as efficient adsorbents for large molecular pollutants such as dyes.

Abstract
Carbon porous materials obtained through KOH activation of a furfural + hydroquinone + urotropine mixture were applied as adsorbent for the remediation of methylene blue (MB). The impact of porous structure with special attention to pore size distribution along with well-known pore volume and specific surface area on the remediation of MB was well investigated and elucidated. Findings obtained revealed that pore size distribution plays a crucial role in the liquid-phase adsorption of organic dyes like MB. By varying the synthesis mode parameters, in particular, the activating agent/precursor mass ratio, with the composition and initial components ratios remaining unchanged, samples with different pore size distribution were obtained. It was found that the material predominantly containing pores with an average equivalent diameter of ~ 3.5 nm appears to be the efficient MB adsorbent. The resulting highly porous carbon materials demonstrated high MB adsorption capacity (up to 2555 mg/g). Furthermore, to fully elucidate the adsorption mechanisms occurring on the obtained materials, a comprehensive mathematical processing of experimental data was performed out using the known kinetic and diffusion models (pseudo-first- and pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion), as well as adsorption equilibrium isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich).It can be concluded that the porous carbon materials obtained and described in the present work are effective adsorbents for the removal of MB and may possess great potential for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Wastewater from the textile industries contaminates the natural water and affects the aquatic environment, soil fertility and biological ecosystem through discharge of different hazardous effluents. Therefore, it is essential to remove such dissolved toxic materials from water by applying more efficient techniques. We performed a comparative study on the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and Nile blue (NB) from water through a catalytic/photocatalytic approach while using a CuO-SiO2 based nanocomposite. The CuO-SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized through a sol-gel process using copper nitrate dihydrate and tetraethylorthosilicate as CuO and SiO2 precursors, respectively, with ammonia solution as the precipitating agent. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized, for their structure, morphology, crystallinity, stability, surface area, pore size and pore volume, by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. The CuO-SiO2 nanocomposite was used for potential environmental applications in the terms of its catalytic and photocatalytic activities toward the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and Nile blue (NB) dyes, in the presence and absence of light, while monitoring the degradation process of dyes by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The catalytic efficiency of the same composite was studied and discussed in terms of changes in the chemical structures of dyes and other experimental conditions, such as the presence and absence of light. Moreover, the composite showed 85% and 90% efficiency towards the removal of rhodamine B and Nile blue dyes respectively. Thus, the CuO-SiO2 nanocomposite showed better efficiency toward removal of Nile blue as compared to rhodamine B dye while keeping other experimental variables constant. This can be attributed to the structure-property relationships and compatibility of a catalyst with the molecular structures of dyes.

Abstract
Contamination of water bodies by potentially toxic elements and organic pollutants has aroused extensive concerns worldwide. Thus it is significant to develop effective adsorbents for removing these contaminants. As a new member of carbonaceous material families (activated carbon, biochar, and graphene), ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with larger specific surface area, ordered pore structure, and higher pore volume are being evaluated for their use in contaminant removal. In this paper, modification techniques of OMC were systematically reviewed for the first time. These include nonmetallic doping modification (nitrogen, sulfur, and boron) and the impregnation of nano-metals and metal oxides (iron, copper, cobalt, nickel, magnesium, and rare earth element). Reaction conditions (solution pH, reaction temperature, sorbent dosage, and contact time) are of critical importance for the removal performance of contaminants onto OMC. In addition, the pristine and modified OMC have been investigated for the removal of a range of contaminants, including cationic/anionic toxic elements and organic contaminants (synthetic dye, phenol, and others), and involving different and specific mechanisms of interaction with contaminants. The future research directions of the application of pristine and modified OMC were proposed. Overall, this review can provide sights into the modification techniques of OMC for removal of environmental contaminants.

Abstract
In this study, a mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) was successfully synthesized using mesoporous silica (SBA-15) prepared from gold mine tailings (sample CGMT) for removal of anionic dye from aqueous solution. For comparison, CMK-3 was prepared by the same method from pure silica (sample CT), and the other CMK-3 sample was prepared by a one-pot route mixing with Pluronic P123 (sample CP). The effect of the carbonization time on the synthesis of all CMK-3 samples was investigated, and the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and N2 adsorption-desorption. The sample with the highest surface area was chosen as an adsorbent, for each CMK-3 obtained from different methods. Batch adsorption experiments were studied to determine the influence of pH, contact time, and initial dye concentration. The adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order model. All carbon-based adsorbents were observed to be quite effective for the removal of dye with adsorption percentage in the order of CP > CT > CGMT. The maximum adsorption capacities were 188.99 and 204.57 mg·g-1 for CT and CGMT, respectively. The comparative results of all carbon-based adsorbents show that CGMT can be applied as a low-cost alternative to CT for dye removal.

Abstract
The TiO2/C composites with approximately 40 wt% of carbon were prepared by calcination of precursors, formed from a one-pot liquid phase reaction between Ti(SO4)2 and flour. All TiO2/C composites displayed mesoporous structures with high BET surface areas (117-138 m2 g-1) and small crystal sizes of TiO2 (8-27 nm). The contents of graphitic carbon and rutile TiO2 increased, while the surface area and TiO2 crystal size decreased for the TiO2/C composite on increasing the calcination temperature from 650 to 800 °C; when calcinated at 800 °C, the anatase TiO2 completely changed into rutile TiO2 in the TiO2/C composite. The TiO2/C composite calcinated at higher temperatures exhibited better adsorptive and photocatalytic degradation performance in the removal of methylene blue (MB). For the entire rutile TiO2/C-800 composite, the adsorption process of MB can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and is governed by chemical adsorption with the maximum adsorption capacity value equal to about 15 mg g-1. Under continuous illumination with a 254 nm UV lamp (15 W) for 3 h, the percentage of MB (14 mg l-1) photocatalytic degradation on 50 mg of TiO2/C-800 was 25.1% higher than that of the maximum adsorption removal. These results suggest that the graphitized carbon has a significant effect on the adsorptivity and photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/C composite.

Abstract
Discharging coloring products in water bodies has degraded water quality irreversibly over the past several decades. Order mesoporous carbon (OMC) was modified by embedding neodymium(III) chloride on the surface of OMC to enhance the adsorptive removal towards these contaminants. This paper represents an artificial neural network (ANN) based approach for modeling the adsorption process of sunset yellow onto neodymium modified OMC (OMC-Nd) in batch adsorption experiments. Neodymium modified OMC was characterized using N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, TEM micrographs, FT-IR and XPS spectra analysis techniques. 2.5 wt% Nd loaded OMC was selected as the final adsorbent for further experiments because OMC-2.5Nd showed highest removal efficiency of 93%. The ANN model was trained and validated with the adsorption experiments data where initial concentration, reaction time, and adsorbent dosage were selected as the variables for the batch study, whereas the removal efficiency was considered as the output. The ANN model was first developed using a three-layer back propagation network with the optimum structure of 3-6-1. The model employed tangent sigmoid transfer function as input in the hidden layer whereas a linear transfer function was used in the output layer. The comparison between modeled data and experimental data provided high degree of correlation (R2 = 0.9832) which indicated the applicability of ANN model for describing the adsorption process with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract
In this study we synthesized a triazine-formaldehyde phenolic resin as a nitrogen-containing resol (N-resol) through the condensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)triazine and formaldehyde. We then used this N-resol as a carbon and nitrogen atom source, mixing it with a diblock copolymer of PEO-b-PCL as the soft template, for the direct synthesis of N-doped mesoporous carbons. Interestingly, the self-assembled N-resol/PEO-b-PCL blends underwent a mesophase transition from cylinder to gyroid and back again to cylinder structures upon increasing the N-resol concentration (i.e., cylinder at 50/50; gyroid at 60/40; cylinder at 70/30). After removing the soft template at 700 °C, the resultant N-doped mesoporous carbons possessed high N atom contents (up to 13 wt%) and displayed gyroid and cylinder nanostructures. The synthesized N-doped mesoporous carbons exhibited excellent CO2 uptake capacities (up to 72 and 150 mg g-1 at 298 and 273 K, respectively). Furthermore, the N-doped mesoporous gyroid carbon structure displayed high adsorption capacities toward organic dyes in water. The maximum adsorption capacities of rhodamine B and methylene blue in water reached as high as 204.08 and 308.64 mg g-1, respectively; furthermore, these N-doped mesoporous carbons also maintained up to 98 % of their maximum adsorption capacities within 45 min.

Abstract
The development of adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and fast separation is of utmost importance for the environmental management of dye-bearing wastewaters. Within this scope, crosslinked hydrogels including poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) and bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate (BMEP) were designed with varying mole ratios of BMEP (5-40%). The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results revealed that the fabrication of crosslinked PVPA-BMEP hydrogels enhanced: (i) functionalities of PA groups in the structure of hydrogels, (ii) thermal stabilities up to 250 °C, and (iii) interaction between methylene blue (MB) molecules and hydrogels. The pseudo second-order kinetic model best described the experimental adsorption data. The behaviors of the isotherms were more appropriate for Langmuir than Freundlich isotherm for the experimental data. PVPA-BMEP (40%) hydrogel indicated a fast and an outstanding MB adsorption capacity of 2841 mg g-1, which has not been reported yet for polymer hydrogels, to the best of our knowledge. The thermodynamic studies concluded that MB adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The overall results suggest that the designed and fabricated PVPA-BMEP hydrogels have great potential for the efficient removal of coloring materials from wastewaters.

Abstract
In this study, natural manganese oxides (MnO x ), an environmental material with high redox potential, were used as a promising low-cost oxidant to degrade the widely used dyestuff methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Although the surface area of MnO x was only 7.17 m2 g-1, it performed well in the degradation of MB with a removal percentage of 85.6% at pH 4. It was found that MB was chemically degraded in a low-pH reaction system and the degradation efficiency correlated negatively with the pH value (4-8) and initial concentration of MB (10-50 mg l-1), but positively with the dosage of MnO x (1-5 g l-1). The degradation of MB fitted well with the second-order kinetics. Mathematical models were also built for the correlation of the kinetic constants with the pH value, the initial concentration of MB and the dosage of MnO x . Furthermore, several transformation products of MB were identified with HPLC-MS, which was linked with the bond energy theory to reveal that the degradation was initiated with demethylation.

Removal of Rhodamine B (A Basic Dye) and Acid Yellow 17 (An Acidic Dye) from Aqueous Solutions by Ordered Mesoporous Carbon and Commercial Activated Carbon. COLLOIDS AND INTERFACES 2019. Abstract
In this work, adsorption of rhodamine B (RB) and acid yellow 17 (AY17) was investigated on ordered mesoporous carbon material obtained by soft-templating method with hydrochloric acid (ST-A). For comparison, the adsorption process on commercial activated carbon CWZ-22 was also carried out. The sorbents were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied to simulate the equilibrium data of RB and AY17. Adsorption isotherm data could be better described by the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model. The adsorption kinetics of RB and AY17 on studied carbons could be well depicted by using pseudo-second-order kinetic modeling. The adsorption capacity increased with temperature increase in the range of 298–315 K. In the whole diffusion process, the intraparticle diffusion was involved, but not the whole rate-controlling step. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, including Gibbs free energy (∆G), enthalpy (∆H), and entropy (ΔS) suggested that adsorption processes of RB and AY17 on ST-A and CWZ-22 were endothermic and spontaneous.

Abstract
CMK-3 mesoporous carbon was nanocast from SBA-15 silica. The obtained carbon was characterized by nitrogen sorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The batch adsorption tests were done at constant pH taking into account the initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent mass and temperature. A statistical study using a response surface design method was done to develop a mathematical model to predict copper adsorption on CMK-3 as a function of the mentioned experimental factors. It was found that all these parameters are significant, and copper concentration has the greatest effect on adsorption among them. Moreover, the obtained model proved to be adequate in predicting copper adsorption on CMK-3 and its performance under different experimental conditions.

Abstract
In order to degrade the macromolecular pollutant of humic acid, the powder ordered mesoporous carbon (POMC, average pore diameter 4.29 nm) was first applied for preparing the granular OMC (GOMC, Φ × H = 4 × 3-6 mm) as electrodes in a continuous three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical system. The POMC was synthesized by hard-templating method and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size distribution, N2 adsorption/desorption technology, and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR). The effects of electrochemical degradation parameters, such as current and hydraulic retention time (HRT), were investigated, and the degradation mechanism of HA was explored as well. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of HA, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC) reached 95.3, 86.2, and 62.7%, respectively, under initial HA of 100 mg/L, current of 0.2 A, and HRT of 130 min. The detection of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) showed that plenty of ˙OH was generated on GOMC electrodes, which made the 3D system more effective than the conventional two-dimensional (2D) system. The cyclic voltammetry curves indicated that the reactions of HA on the OMC materials surface included both direct oxidation and direct reduction.

Abstract
In this work, we report the development of a cross-linked bio-composite consisting of graphene oxide, potato starch, cross-linker glutaraldehyde and its application to adsorption of the industrial dye, methylene blue, from aqueous solution. The inexpensiveness, non-hazardous nature and easy bio-degradability are the major reasons for the selection of starch material as one of the components of the bio-composite. The bio-composite has been characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, particle size and zeta potential analysis. The FTIR analysis reveals the nature of the binding sites and surface morphology of the bio-composite can be understood through SEM. The auto-phase separability of the adsorbent i.e., the precipitation of the adsorbent without any mechanical means is another factor which makes this particular material very attractive as an adsorbent. Parameters like adsorbent dosage, pH, temperature, rotation speed and salt concentration have been varied to find out the suitable dye adsorption conditions. Furthermore, the time dependence of adsorption process has been analyzed using pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorption isotherms have been constructed to suggest convincing mechanistic pathway for this adsorption process. Finally, desorption studies have been successfully performed in 3 cycles, establishing the reusability of the material, which should allow the adsorbent to be economically promising for practical application in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Sewage sludge-based activated carbon is proved to be an efficient and low-cost adsorbent in treatment of various industrial wastewaters. The produced carbon had a well-developed pore structure and relatively low Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. Adsorptive capacity of typical pollutants, i.e. copper Cu(II) and methylene blue (MB) on the carbon was studied. Adsorptions were affected by the initial solution pH, contact time and adsorbent dose. Results showed that adsorption of Cu(II) and MB on the produced carbon could reach equilibrium after 240 min. The average removal rate for Cu(II) on the carbon was high, up to 97% in weak acidic conditions (pH = 4-6) and around 98% for MB in a very wide pH range (pH = 2-12). The adsorption kinetics were well fitted by the pseudo-second order model, and both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models could well describe the adsorption process at room temperature. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and MB on sewage sludge-based activated carbon were 114.94 mg/g and 125 mg/g, respectively. Compared with commercial carbon, the sewage sludge-based carbon was more suitable for heavy metal ions' removal than dyes'.

Abstract
This work evaluates the application of Mytella falcata shells, discarded in large quantities in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, as adsorbent for methylene blue dye (MB). It was investigated how the amount of adsorbent (M), the average particle diameter (G), and the agitation speed (A) affected the adsorption. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were conducted, and the pseudo-second-order equation adequately represented the kinetic data and isotherms following Liu's model (q max = 8.81 mg g-1 at 60 °C). The adsorption was spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic. Mytella falcata shell is a suitable adsorbent for MB and could potentially contribute to its removal from the environment.
