Abstract
The mixing of [V10 O28 ]6- decavanadate anions with a dicationic gemini surfactant (gem) leads to the spontaneous self-assembly of surfactant-templated nanostructured arrays of decavanadate clusters. Calcination of the material under air yields highly crystalline, sponge-like V2 O5 (gem-V2 O5 ). In contrast, calcination of the amorphous tetrabutylammonium decavanadate allows isolation of a more agglomerated V2 O5 consisting of very small crystallites (TBA-V2 O5 ). Electrochemical analysis of the materials' performance as lithium-ion intercalation electrodes highlights the role of morphology in cathode performance. The large crystallites and long-range microstructure of the gem-V2 O5 cathode deliver higher initial capacity and superior capacity retention than TBA-V2 O5 . The smaller crystallite size and higher surface area of TBA-V2 O5 allow faster lithium insertion and superior rate performance to gem-V2 O5 .

Abstract
The design of functional nano-objects by electrostatic self-assembly in solution signifies an emerging field with great potential. More specifically, the targeted combination of electrostatic interaction with other effects and interactions, such as the positioning of charges on stiff building blocks, the use of additional amphiphilic, π-π stacking building blocks, or polyelectrolytes with certain architectures, have recently promulgated electrostatic self-assembly to a principle for versatile defined structure formation. A large variety of architectures from spheres over rods and hollow spheres to networks in the size range of a few tenths to a few hundred nanometers can be formed. This review discusses the state-of-the-art of different approaches of nano-object formation by electrostatic self-assembly against the backdrop of corresponding solid materials and assemblies formed by other non-covalent interactions. In this regard, particularly promising is the facile formation of triggerable structures, i.e. size and shape switching through light, as well as the use of electrostatically assembled nano-objects for improved photocatalysis and the possible solar energy conversion in the future. Lately, this new field is eliciting an increasing amount of understanding; insights and limitations thereof are addressed in this article. Special emphasis is placed on the interconnection of molecular building block structures and the resulting nanoscale architecture via the key of thermodynamics.

Abstract
The demand for lowering interfacial tension (IFT) in different processes has persuaded researchers to use stable and resistant surfactants with low environmental impact. For this purpose, surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) have attracted much attention owing to their good amphiphilic nature and prominent properties like recyclability and high performance under harsh conditions. This review initially explains how the IFT and critical micelle concentration of different systems vary in the presence of different SAILs with a variety of alkyl chain lengths, head groups, and counter anions. Towards this aim, some physicochemical properties of SAILs as well as the corresponding theoretical aspects of adsorption are considered. Then, recent advances in utilizing SAILs for reducing IFT of different chemical systems are surveyed. Relevantly, the role of important operating parameters of temperature, pH, presence of electrolytes, and the chemical nature of involved phases are adequately discussed. Further, an overview of different SAILs applications in stabilization, separation, and in petroleum industries is scrutinized. To allow better judgment, precise comparisons between different types of SAILs and conventional surfactants are provided. Finally, challenges and possible directions of future research on SAILs are highlighted.

Abstract
Oppositely charged nanoparticle (NP)-nanoparticle (NP) interactions were studied by titrating sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) stabilized NPs with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) stabilized NPs at constant temperature with the help of UV-visible and dynamic light scattering measurements. CTAB stabilized NPs were systematically replaced with a series of cationic gemini surfactants to demonstrate the effect of head group and hydrocarbon tail modifications on the electrostatic interactions with SDS stabilized NPs. Introduction of the dimeric gemini head group (alkylammonium or imidazolium), spacer length, and double tail hydrocarbon length all significantly reduced the NP-NP interactions and delayed their salting-out process. They lead to the formation of stable colloidal aqueous solubilized NP-NP complexes. The results concluded that NP-NP interactions can be overcome if appropriately stabilized NPs are used to maintain their colloidal stability so as to achieve maximum applicability.
