Abstract
We conducted a study on the photophysics of three indoline dyes, D102, D149, and D205, in binary mixtures of ionic liquids (IL) and polar aprotic molecular solvents (MS). Specifically, we examined the behavior of these dyes in IL-MS mixtures containing four different imidazolium-based ILs and three different polar aprotic MSs. Our investigation involved several techniques, including stationary absorption and emission measurements, as well as femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Through our analysis, we discovered a peculiar behavior of several photophysical properties at low IL mole fractions (0 < XIL < 0.2). Indeed, in this range of mixture composition, the absorption maximum wavelength decreases noticeably, while the emission maximum wavelength and the Stokes shift, expressed in wavenumbers, reach a maximum. while a minimum occurs in the relative quantum yield and the excited state lifetime. These results indicate that the solvation of dye undergoes a large change in this range of mixture composition. We found that, at high ionic liquid content, the excited relaxation times are correlated with the high viscosity, while at low content, it is the polarity of the solvent that influences the behavior of the excited relaxation times. At a mixture composition of around 0.10, the behavior of the photophysical properties of the studied IL-MS mixtures indicates a crossover between situations where the solvation is dominated by that of ions and that dominated by the solvent.

Abstract
In practical applications, ionic liquids are often mixed with co-solvents. Understanding their structures and the interactions between them is a prerequisite for expanding their range of applications. In this work, spectroscopic and theoretical methods were employed to explore the structure and hydrogen bonding behaviors of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIMTFSI)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate (EMIMSCN) and co-solvents. It can be concluded that the hydrogen bonds associated with C2-H and C4,5-H are enhanced with the addition of co-solvents in the EMIMTFSI-DMSO system, while those associated with C4,5-H are weakened in the EMIMSCN-DMSO system. Infrared and excess spectra in the v(imidazolium C-H) range of EMIMSCN-CD3CN/CD3COCD3 systems further indicate that the abnormal change of hydrogen bonds associated with C4,5-H can be attributed to [SCN]-. These differences can be explained by the change of the primary interaction site. For EMIMTFSI, the primary interaction site in ion pairs and ion clusters is always C2-H, while for EMIMSCN, the primary interaction site in ion pairs is C2-H, and in ion clusters, it becomes C4,5-H. In the EMIMTFSI-DMSO system, the co-solvent primarily interacts with C4,5-H, while in the EMIMSCN-DMSO/CH3CN/CH3COCH3 systems, it primarily interacts with C2-H. In addition, several complexes are identified through excess infrared spectra and DFT calculations.

Abstract
By dissolving copper chloride in [Bmim]Cl (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride), chloride ions can coordinate with copper ions and form [CuCl4]2-, thereby inducing the solution being hydrophobic. In the present work, hydrogen bonds between [Bmim]+ and anions are analyzed and discussed by two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. Time-dependent attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is introduced to monitor the hygroscopic process of [Bmim]2[CuCl4] and [Bmim]Cl in situ. Hygroscopic capacity and rate of [Bmim]2[CuCl4] shrink compared with [Bmim]Cl. The change of water molecular clusters has been studied by second-derivative spectra in the hygroscopic process. The behaviors of water molecular in the two ionic liquids are also distinctive.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are an important class of media that are usually used in combination with polar solvents to reduce costs and tune their physicochemical properties. In this regard, it is essential to understand the influence of adding solvents on the properties of ILs. In this work, the micro-heterogeneity and H-bonding interactions between a hydroxyl-functionalized IL, [HOEmim][TFSI], and acetonitrile (ACN) were investigated by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and molecular simulations. All studied IL-ACN mixtures were found to deviate from the ideal mixtures. The degree of deviations reaches the maximum at about x(ACN)=0.7 with the presence of both homogeneous clusters of pure IL/ACN and heterogeneous clusters of IL-ACN. With the addition of ACN to IL, the mixtures undergo the transformation from "ACN solvated in [HOEmim][TFSI]" to "[HOEmim][TFSI] solvated in ACN". It is found that the newly formed H-bonding interactions between the IL and ACN is the main factor that contributes to the red shifts of O-H, C2 -H, C4,5 -H, and Calkyl -H of [HOEmim]+ cation, and the blue shifts of C-D, C≡N of ACN, and C-F, S=O of [TFSI]- anion. These in-depth studies on the mixtures of hydroxyl-functionalized IL and acetonitrile would help to understand the micro-heterogeneity and H-bonding interactions of miscible solutions and shed light on exploring their applications.

Abstract
Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations were performed on tert-butyl alcohol (t-BuOH) and its binary solutions with CCl4 and CHCl3. The study was focused on the free-OH stretching bands. Two resolution-enhancing methods, excess spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, were employed to examine the structural heterogeneity and search for the detailed contributors to the free-OH bands. Unexpectedly, CCl4 was found not to be an inert solvent and, similar to CHCl3, formed hydrogen/halogen bonds (H-/X-bond) with t-BuOH. It was observed that the free-OH band in the t-BuOH-CHCl3 system is larger and more red-shifted than that in the t-BuOH-CCl4 system, indicating the stronger intermolecular interactions in the former system. Furthermore, in the t-BuOH-CHCl3 system, the H-bonds are stronger than the X-bonds, while in the t-BuOH-CCl4 system, both interactions are similar in strength. To assign the free-OH bands, it was found that they are not only from the free OH of the t-BuOH monomer, but they are also contributed by the quasi-free OH with the oxygen bonded to H or Cl and even the weakly H-bonded OH of t-BuOH molecules. Finally, all the identified species increased simultaneously via cosolvent addition, suggestive of the destabilization of the highly associated t-BuOH clusters.

Abstract
Abstract
Characterization of structural heterogeneity of liquid solutions and the pursuit of its nature have been challenging tasks to solution chemists. In the last decade, an emerging method called excess spectroscopy has found applications in this area. The method, combining the merits of molecular spectroscopy and excess thermodynamic functions, shows the ability to enhance the apparent resolution of spectra, provides abundant information concerning solution structures and intermolecular interactions. In this review, the thinking and mathematics of the method, as well as its developments, are presented first. Then, research progress related to the exploration of the method is thoroughly reviewed. The materials are classified into two parts, small-molecular solutions and ionic liquid solutions. Finally, potential challenges and the perspective for further development of the method are discussed.

Abstract
How would acidic bond dissociation be affected by adding a small quantity of a weakly polar ionic liquid IL (the "apparent" or "measured" dielectric constant ε of the IL is around 10-15) into a strongly polar molecular solvent (e.g., ε of DMSO: 46.5), or vice versa? The answer is blurred, because no previous investigation was reported in this regard. Toward this, we, taking various IL/DMSO mixtures as representatives, have thoroughly investigated the effects of the respective solvent in ionic-molecular binary systems on self-dissociation of C-H acid phenylmalononitrile PhCH(CN)2 via pK a determination. As disclosed, in this category of binary media, (1) no linear correspondence exists between pK a and molar fractions of the respective solvent components; (2) only ∼1-2 mol% of weakly polar ILs in strongly polar DMSO make C-H bonds even more dissociative than in neat DMSO; (3) a small fraction of DMSO in ILs (<10 mol%) can dramatically ease acidic C-H-dissociation; and (4) while the DMSO fraction further increases, its acidifying effect becomes much attenuated. These findings, though maybe counterintuitive, have been rationalized on the basis of the precise pK a measurement of this work in relation to the respective roles of each solvent component in solvation.

Abstract
Deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new class of green solvents. Here, we report the hydrogen bonding and structural properties of the archetypal DES ethaline, a mixture of choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG) of a 1:2 molar ratio, and its pseudo-binary mixtures with acetonitrile. The investigations were carried out employing Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. Excess and two-dimensional (2D)-correlation spectroscopies were used to identify favorable species in the solutions and to explore the heterogeneity. The results show that the mixing process is the transformation from ethaline and CH3CN dimer to the complexes of ethaline-1CH3CN and ethaline-2CH3CN, together with the increased percentages of the EG dimer, EG trimer, and CH3CN monomer with respect to their total amounts in the mixtures. Theoretical calculations show that, for ChCl, the positive charge is located at the methyl groups and methylenes, rendering their ability to form hydrogen bonds. Adding CH3CN to ethaline can hardly break apart the doubly ionic hydrogen bonds between Ch+ and Cl-. The cosolvent molecules mainly surround the core structure of ethaline, forming noncovalent hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups of EG/Ch+ but not Cl-. These in-depth studies on the properties of ethaline and CH3CN/CD3CN mixed solvents may shed light on exploring their applications.

Abstract
Mixing ionic liquids (ILs) with molecular solvents can extend the practical applications of ILs and overcome the drawbacks of neat ILs. Knowledge on the structure and hydrogen-bond interaction properties of IL-molecular solvent mixtures is essential for chemical applications. In this work, the structure and hydrogen-bond features of N-alkyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CnMPyr][Tf2N], n = 3, 4, 6 and 8) and DMSO mixtures were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excess infrared absorption spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) were employed to extract structural information on the mixtures from the C-D systematic stretching vibrational (νs(C-D)) region of the methyl groups in DMSO-d6. It was found that the mixing process of [CnMPyr][Tf2N] and DMSO is non-ideal and interaction complexes form between [CnMPyr][Tf2N] and DMSO-d6. They are ion cluster-DMSO-d6 complexes and ion pair-DMSO-d6 complexes. In the mixing processes, the species present in pure DMSO gradually decrease from DMSO dimer to DMSO monomer with an increase in ILs. Besides, the ion cluster-DMSO complexes gradually increase, while the ion pair-DMSO complexes decrease due to the strong electrostatic interaction between the cation and anion. In the ion cluster-DMSO complexes and ion pair-DMSO complexes, the ring hydrogen atoms of the methylene group directly attached to the nitrogen atom are the preferred interaction sites of the [CnMPyr]+ cations. All the hydrogen bonds in the identified complexes are closed-shell, electrostatically dominant and weak.

Abstract
The present study is aimed at probing the hydrogen bonding interaction between epinephrine and uracil by means of density functional theory calculations concerning their complexation's geometries, interaction energies, and vibrational frequencies. Geometry optimization was carried out giving 19 stable geometries of epinephrine-uracil complex with interaction energies in a range of - 21.51 to - 62.37 kJ mol-1 using the basis set superposition error (BSSE) correction. The analysis of structure and vibration shows that the hydrogen bonding elongates the length of corresponding bond O(N)-H and decreases the symmetric stretching vibrational frequency, which indicates red-shifted H-bonding interactions in all the geometries. Additionally, the analysis with theories of natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIM), and the reduced density gradient (RDG) of hydrogen bonding properties and characteristics of the 19 geometries suggests that the hydrogen bonding in all the optimized structures of epinephrine-uracil complex is kind of a closed-shell interaction and mainly electrostatic dominant.

Abstract
Photovoltaic technologies based on perovskite absorber materials have led this optoelectronic field into a brand-new horizon. However, the present antisolvents used in the one-step spin-coating method always encounter problems with the very narrow process window. Herein, anisole is introduced into the one-step spin-coating method, and the technology is developed to fabricate perovskite thin films with ultrawide processing window with a dimethylformamide (DMF):dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) ratio varying from 6:4 to 9:1 in the precursor solution, anisole dripping time ranging from 5 to 25 s, and an antisolvent volume varying from 0.1 to 0.9 mL. Perovskite thin films as large as 100 cm2 are successfully fabricated using this method. Maximum photoelectric conversion efficiencies of 19.76% for small-area (0.14 cm2 ) and 17.39% for large-area (1.08 cm2 ) perovskite solar cell devices are obtained. It is also found that there are intermolecular hydrogen-bonding forces between anisole and DMF/DMSO that play critical roles in the wide process window. These results provide a deeper understanding of the crystallizing procedure of perovskite during the one-step spin-coating process.

Abstract
The addition of highly polar and aprotic cosolvents to ionic liquids has proven to considerably decrease the viscosity of the solution and improve mass transfer in many chemical reactions. In this work, the interactions between a representative pyridinium-based ionic liquid, N-butylpyridinium dicyanamide ([Bpy][DCA]), and a cosolvent, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), were studied in detail by the combined use of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and density functional theory calculations. Several species in the [Bpy][DCA]-DMSO mixtures have been identified, that is, ion clusters can translate into ion pairs during the dilution process. DMSO formed hydrogen bonds (H bonds) simultaneously with [Bpy]+ cations and [DCA]- anions but stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions with the [Bpy]+ cations than the [DCA]- anions, and the intrinsic hydrogen-bond networks of IL were difficult to interrupt at low DMSO concentrations. Interestingly, hydrogen-bonding interactions reach the strongest when the molar fraction of DMSO is 0.4-0.5. Hydrogen-bonding interactions are prominent in the chemical shifts of hydrogen atoms in [Bpy]+ cations, and anisotropy is the main reason for the upfield shifts of DMSO in the presence of [Bpy][DCA]. The theoretical calculations offer in-depth studies of the structural evolution and NMR calculation.

Abstract
It is a trend to substitute bioplastics for petroleum-based plastics in food packaging. Glycerol-plasticized soy protein isolate (SPI) is promising as a replacement for traditional petroleum-based plastics. Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) plays a key role in plasticization of SPI film. However, few publications are concerned with the interactions of SPI and glycerol at the molecular level. In this paper, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy was applied to investigate the effect of H-bonding on the secondary structures of glycerol-plasticized SPI films and thus on the plasticization. An "S" profile of the H-bonding between SPI and glycerol with an abrupt jump in the glycerol range of 10-30% was achieved. For more in-depth investigation of the H-bonding, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) and perturbation-correlation moving-window two-dimensional (PCMW2D) analyses were applied to the amide I and II bands of SPI films spectra series. The conformation change sequences under the effect of H-bonding were revealed. When glycerol was involved, it entered into the β-sheet and the H-bonds of the SPI peptide backbone (C = O···H-N-) were replaced by the new H-bonds between SPI and glycerol (C = O···H-O-). The transformations of parallel β-sheet to β-turn in the range of 0-20% and anti-parallel β-sheet to β-turn in the range of 20-35% were obtained. In the 35-60% concentration range, the β-sheet was first changed to a transition state conformation, then together with the β-turn, to the random coil. The 2D-COS results clearly suggest that the conformations of SPI gradually change from the ordered to the less ordered and disordered, which significantly improve the plasticity of SPI film.

Abstract
Ultrasound (US) effects on aqueous poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) solution were investigated using viscosity and FT-IR spectroscopy after exposure to US of 23, 43, and 96 kHz frequencies at 50 W. The viscosity of the poly(1-vinyl-3-butyl-imidazolium chloride) (PIL) aqueous solution decreased during exposure to US. It then increased gradually within about 10 min as US stopped. The aqueous PIL behavior was then observed using FT-IR spectroscopy. The US exposure enhanced the FT-IR band intensity of the OH stretching. The band intensity returned to its original value after the US stopped. These results responded cyclically to the US on/off. Analysis of the FT-IR spectra revealed that US influenced the breakage and reformation of hydrogen bonds in the PIL and water. Two-dimensional correlation and deconvolution were used to analyze the change of components in the region of 3000-3700 cm(-1) for US exposure. Results of these analyses suggest that US exposure might break hydrogen bonds between PIL segments and water. In the absence of US, hydrogen bonds reformation was also observed between the PIL and water.
