Abstract
BACKGROUND Micronutrient intake was inversely associated with cancer and cardiovascular risk in previous studies, but obtained results were inconsistent and the biological mechanisms for this potential protective effect remain elusive. Therefore, we investigated the associations of serum vitamin C, 25(OH)D, α-tocopherol, β-carotene, lycopene, folate, and iron with all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular mortality. We further evaluated whether these associations were mediated through altered inflammatory responses. METHODS Data were obtained from 11,539 participants aged ≥40 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2001-2006 and 2017-2018. Mortality status of the participants with an average follow-up of 10.5 years was ascertained from the linked mortality files of the National Death Index. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to evaluate mortality risk in relation to serum micronutrients, while mediation analysis was used to assess the mediating effects of serum C-reactive protein and white blood cell count on the associations of interest. RESULTS After adjustment for confounders, serum levels of vitamin C, 25(OH)D, β-carotene, and lycopene were associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. For example, HRs (95 % CIs) for quartiles 2, 3, and 4 vs. quartile 1 of 25(OH)D were, respectively, 0.72 (0.62, 0.83), 0.70 (0.62, 0.79), and 0.66 (0.56, 0.78) (p-trend: <0.0001) for all-cause mortality, 0.68 (0.52, 0.91), 0.54 (0.39, 0.73), and 0.48 (0.32, 0.71) (p-trend: 0.0001) for cancer mortality, and 0.64 (0.50, 0.83), 0.66 (0.53, 0.83), and 0.59 (0.42, 0.82) (p-trend: 0.0012) for cardiovascular mortality. Additionally, serum C-reactive protein significantly mediated 5.3%-20.4 %, 4.5%-18.1 %, and 3.3%-15.7 % of the associations of vitamin C, 25(OH)D, β-carotene, and lycopene with all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. CONCLUSION This study suggested that serum levels of several antioxidants and vitamin D were inversely associated with all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular mortality, mediated in part by mitigated inflammatory responses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The characteristics of ulcerative colitis (UC) in the elderly are quite different from the young population. Mitochondrial injury is a key mechanism regulating both aging and inflammation. This study aims to reveal the role of mitochondrial damage in the pathogenesis of adult- and elderly-onset UC. METHODS RNA-sequencing of colonic mucosa from adult- and elderly-onset UC patients was performed. Mitochondria-related differentially expressive genes (mDEGs) and immune cell infiltration analysis were identified and performed in colonic tissues from UC patients. Mice aged 6-8 weeks and 20-24 months were administered 2% dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) for 7 days to induce colitis. Mitochondrial morphological changes and ATP levels were evaluated in the colons of mice. Mechanistically, we explored the association of key mDEG with reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxygen consumption rates, NLRP3/IL-1β pathway in HCT116 cell line. RESULTS Thirty mDEGs were identified between adult- and elderly-onset UC, which were related primarily to mitochondrial respiratory function and also had significant correlation with different infiltrates of immune cells. Compared with young colitis mice, DSS-induced colitis in the aged mice exhibited more severe inflammation, damaged mitochondrial structure and lower ATP levels in colonic tissues. ALDH1L1 was identified as a hub DEG through protein-protein interaction networks of RNA-seq, which was downregulated in UC patients or colitis mice versus healthy controls. In tumor necrosis factor-alpha-stimulated HCT116 cells, mitochondrial ROS, NLRP3 and IL-1β expression increased less and mitochondrial respiration had an upregulated trend after knocking down ALDH1L1. CONCLUSION There are significant differences in mitochondrial structure, ATP production and mitochondria-related gene expression between adult- and elderly-onset UC, which have a potential link with cytokine pathways and immune microenvironment. The more prominent mitochondrial injury may be a key factor for more severe inflammatory response and poorer outcome in elderly-onset UC.

Abstract
Folic acid (FA) supplementation in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients lead to accumulation of unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) which might influence the level of cytokines and NK cell activity and thus trigger the crisis event. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of UMFA levels on immuno-inflammatory markers in SCD patients taking FA supplementation. The cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 HbSS confirmed SCD cases with 22 crisis and 38 cases at steady state of 15-40 years age group. Serum FA, 5-Methyl Tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), Dihydrofolate reductase, Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Highly sensitive C-Reactive Protein (HsCRP), and natural killer (NK) cell activity were estimated. More than 50% of the study population depicted presence of UMFA. The median UMFA level was significantly elevated in crisis group (131.8 ng/mL) as compared to the steady state group (36.31 ng/mL) (p = 0.041). The median value of HsCRP was significantly higher in the crisis group (18.41 mg/L) than the steady state group (2.04 mg/L) (p = 0.003). Similarly, IL-6 was higher in crisis group (13.29 pg/mL) than steady state group (5 pg/mL) (p = 0.060). The median NK cell activity was 39.28 nmol/L in crisis group and 35.31 nmol/L in steady state groups (p = 0.889). In bivariate correlation analysis, UMFA showed a significant negative correlation with NK cell activity (r = - 0.638; p = < 0.001) and a positive correlation with IL-6 (r = 0.571; p = 0.001) and HsCRP (r = 0.237; p = 0.200). Accumulation of UMFA affect NK cell activity, thus influence the vulnerability for crisis state. Therefore, dosage modification for FA supplementation in SCD patients is suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, indicating systemic inflammation. Abnormal lipid levels and deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals could also contribute to elevated hs-CRP levels. By broadly looking at the cross-correlations between inflammatory, lipid, and micronutrient markers, we aim to highlight the key associations at the serological levels. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 1,014 free-living individuals who tested for cardiovascular and micronutrient panels along with hs-CRP at Vibrant America Clinical Laboratory. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Based on parametric t-tests, significant variations between the sexes (Ma1) were observed for cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, vitamin A, vitamin D3, serum copper, and valine. Pearson's correlation showed a high-significant positive correlation between hs-CRP and triglycerides, folate, serum copper, and manganese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The beneficial effects of folate have been observed under different conditions, but the available evidence on inflammation and reduction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is limited. The study aimed to explore the effects of folate on inflammation and homocysteine amongst individuals with T2DM. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were used to search for evidence. A random-effect model meta-analysis through Review Manager (version 5.4) and metaHun was performed. Results were reported as standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals graphically using forest and funnel plots. RESULTS Data from 9 trials with 426 patients living with T2DM were analyzed. Folic acid supplementation significantly revealed a large effect size on homocysteine levels compared to placebo, SMD = -1.53, 95%CI (-2.14,-0.93), p < 0.05. Additionally, we observed a medium marginal effect size on C-reactive protein (SMD = -0.68, 95%CI (-1.34, -0.01), p = 0.05). However, no significant effect on tumor necrosis factor-α (SMD = -0.86, 95%CI (-2.65, 0.93), p = 0.34), and interleukin-6 (SMD = -0.04, 95%CI (-1.08, 1.01), p = 0.95) was observed. CONCLUSION Evidence analyzed in this study suggests that folic acid supplementation in T2DM reduces homocysteine and may mitigate CVDs. However, its effect on inflammation is inconclusive.

Abstract
An organism's ability to function properly depends not solely on its diet but also on the intake of nutrients and non-nutritive bioactive compounds that exert immunomodulatory effects. This principle applies both to healthy individuals and, in particular, to those with concomitant chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. However, the current food industry and the widespread use of highly processed foods often lead to nutritional deficiencies. Numerous studies have confirmed the occurrence of immune system dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. This article elucidates the impact of specific nutrients on the immune system function, which maintains homeostasis of the organism, with a particular emphasis on type 2 diabetes. The role of macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, and selected substances, such as omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, and alpha-lipoic acid, was taken into consideration, which outlined the minimum range of tests that ought to be performed on patients in order to either directly or indirectly determine the severity of malnutrition in this group of patients.

Abstract
Background Adequate intake of folic acid (FA) has been proven essential for metabolism, cellular homeostasis, and antioxidant effects in diabetic patients. Our aim was to evaluate the association between serum folate levels and the risk of insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to provide new ideas and approaches for reducing the risk of T2DM. Methods This was a case-control study involving 412 participants (206 with T2DM). Anthropometric parameters, islet function, biochemical parameters and body composition of T2DM group and control group were determined. Correlation analysis and logistic regression were used to evaluate the risk factors associated with the onset of insulin resistance in T2DM. Results The folate levels in type 2 diabetic patients with insulin resistance were significantly lower than those in patients without insulin resistance. Logistic regression showed that FA and high-density lipoprotein were independent influencing factors for insulin resistance in diabetic patients (P < 0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, the degree of insulin resistance in diabetic patients was in a significant inverse relationship with folate levels (P< 0.05). We also found that below the serum FA threshold of 7.09 ng/mL insulin resistance was significantly more elevated. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the risk of insulin resistance increases with the decrease in serum FA levels in T2DM patients. Monitoring folate levels in these patients and FA supplementation are warranted preventive measures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have explored the impact of 17β-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate administration on blood pressure and inflammation markers, however, their findings have often been contradictory. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs to assess the effects of this drug combination on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations. METHODS The Cochrane Library, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant published RCTs. The pooled mean change and standard deviation (SD) of the outcomes were calculated using the STATA software (version 14) for Statistical Computing. RESULTS A total of 18 publications were included in the current meta-analysis. In total, there were 12 RCT arms on SBP, 12 RCT arms on DBP, and 6 RCT arms on CRP levels. The administration of 17β-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate intake increased SBP (WMD: 3.48 mmHg, 95% CI: 0.73, 6.23, P = 0.013), particularly in subjects aged ≥ 60 years (WMD: 5.89 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.71, 10.07, P = 0.006) or with a body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2 (WMD: 6.55 mmHg, 95% CI: 2.64, 10.46, P = 0.012), as well as in the RCTs which lasted ≥ 6 months (WMD: 6.47 mmHg, 95% CI: 3.03, 9.90, P < 0.001),when 17β-estradiol dosages were ≥ 2 mg/day (WMD: 4.12 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.03, 7.22, P = 0.009; I2 = 99%, P < 0.001) and in RCTs conducted on healthy postmenopausal women (WMD: 4.22 mmHg, 95% CI: 0.43, 8.01, P = 0.02; I2 = 94%, P < 0.001). DBP decreased following this drug combination in the RCTs which lasted < 6 months (WMD: -1.42 mmHg, 95% CI: -2.27, -0.57, P = 0.001). CRP concentrations increased following the use of this drug combination (WMD: 1.01 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.62, 1.41, P < 0.001), especially in participants aged < 60 years (WMD: 1.22 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.77, 1.68, P < 0.001) or with a BMI < 30 kg/m2 (WMD: 0.97 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.67, 1.27, P < 0.001), as well as in RCTs with a duration of ≥ 6 months (WMD: 1.15 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.57, 1.73, P < 0.001), when 17β-estradiol dosages were ≥ 2 mg/day (WMD: 0.97 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.67, 1.27, P < 0.001; I2 = 55%, P = 0.107) and in RCTs conducted on healthy postmenopausal women (WMD: 1.22 mg/L, 95% CI: 0.77, 1.68, P < 0.001; I2 = 90%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The administration of 17β-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate increases SBP and CRP concentrations and, when prescribed for less than 6 months, decreases DBP. However, despite being statistically significant, the impact of this drug combination on SBP and DBP is not clinically relevant as the variation in blood pressure values was low.

Abstract
Periconceptional maternal obesity is linked to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Identifying periconceptional biomarkers of pathways affected by maternal obesity can unravel pathophysiologic mechanisms and identify individuals at risk of adverse clinical outcomes. The literature was systematically reviewed to identify periconceptional biomarkers of the endocrine, inflammatory and one-carbon metabolic pathways influenced by maternal obesity. A search was conducted in Embase, Ovid Medline All, Web of Science Core Collection and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, complemented by manual search in PubMed until December 31st, 2020. Eligible studies were those that measured biomarker(s) in relation to maternal obesity, overweight/obesity or body mass index (BMI) during the periconceptional period (14 weeks preconception until 14 weeks post conception). The ErasmusAGE score was used to assess the quality of included studies. Fifty-one articles were included that evaluated over 40 biomarkers. Endocrine biomarkers associated with maternal obesity included leptin, insulin, thyroid stimulating hormone, adiponectin, progesterone, free T4 and human chorionic gonadotropin. C-reactive protein was associated with obesity as part of the inflammatory pathway, while the associated one-carbon metabolism biomarkers were folate and vitamin B12. BMI was positively associated with leptin, C-reactive protein and insulin resistance, and negatively associated with Free T4, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin. Concerning the remaining studied biomarkers, strong conclusions could not be established due to limited or contradictory data. Future research should focus on determining the predictive value of the optimal set of biomarkers for their use in clinical settings. The most promising biomarkers include leptin, adiponectin, human chorionic gonadotropin, insulin, progesterone and CRP.

Abstract
Previous clinical studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of folic acid (FA) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have shown controversial results. This study aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effect of FA on inflammatory marker levels in MetS patients. We screened PubMed, Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Library (from inception to March 2022) to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). DerSimonian and Laird random effects were used to estimate the pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Funnel plot, Egger's test, and the Begg-Mazumdar correlation test was used to assess publication bias. Subgroup analysis, meta-regression and sensitivity analysis were performed to find out possible sources of between-study heterogeneity. Ten RCTs with a total of 511 participants were included. The analysis showed that FA reduced high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (WMD, -0.94; 95% CI, -1.56 to -0.32; P = 0.00), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (WMD, -0.39; 95% CI, -0.51 to -0.28; P = 0.00), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (WMD, -1.28; 95% CI, -1.88 to -0.68; P = 0.00), but did not decrease the C-reactive protein (CRP) (WMD, 0.10; 95% CI, -0.13 to 0.33; P = 0.38). Sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and meta-regression showed that the effect sizes remained stable. Our findings suggest that FA supplementation could reduce inflammatory markers, such as hs-CRP, IL-6, TNF-α in patients with MetS. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021223843).

Abstract
Aim The present study aimed to determine the folic acid supplement (FAS) effects on serum homocysteine and sortilin levels, glycemic indices, and lipid profile in type II diabetic patients. Method A double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial have been performed on 100 patients with T2DM randomly divided into two groups that received either placebo or folic acid 5 mg/d for 12 weeks. Results FAS caused a significant decrease in homocysteine and sortilin serum levels (28.2% and 33.7%, P < 0.0001, respectively). After 3 months of intervention, 8.7% decrease in fasting blood glucose (P = 0.0005), 8.2% in HbA1c (P = 0.0002), 13.7% in serum insulin (P < 0.0001) and 21.7% in insulin resistance (P < 0.0001) were found in the folic acid group, however no significant difference was observed in the placebo group. Serum hs-CRP level showed significant positive associations with sortilin (r = 0.237, P = 0.018), homocysteine (r = 0.308, P = 0.002) and fasting blood glucose (r = 0.342, P = 0.000). There were no significant changes in lipid profile in both groups after 12 weeks. Conclusion FAS might be beneficial for reducing homocysteine and sortilin levels, enhancing glycemic control, and improved insulin resistance in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Growing evidence supports the importance of lifestyle and environmental exposures-collectively referred to as the 'exposome'-for ensuring immune health. In this narrative review, we summarize and discuss the effects of the different exposome components (physical activity, body weight management, diet, sun exposure, stress, sleep and circadian rhythms, pollution, smoking, and gut microbiome) on immune function and inflammation, particularly in the context of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We highlight the potential role of 'exposome improvements' in the prevention-or amelioration, once established-of this disease as well as their effect on the response to vaccination. In light of the existing evidence, the promotion of a healthy exposome should be a cornerstone in the prevention and management of the COVID-19 pandemic and other eventual pandemics.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite extensive research, findings regarding the effects of folic acid supplementation on inflammatory mediators have been controversial and inconclusive. This study therefore aimed to summarize the findings of all available clinical trials regarding the effects of folic acid supplementation on inflammatory biomarkers in adults. METHODS A systematic search was conducted of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Google Scholar until April 2020. All randomized controlled trials that examined the influence of folic acid supplementation on C-reactive protein, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were included. Pooled effect sizes were calculated based on the random effects model, and dose-response analysis was modeled by using a fractional polynomial model. FINDINGS In total, 18 randomized controlled trials involving 2286 participants were analyzed. Folic acid supplementation significantly reduced serum levels of C-reactive protein (mean difference [MD], -0.21 mg/L; 95% CI, -0.41 to -0.01; n = 16), TNF-α (MD, -14.88 pg/mL; 95% CI, -23.68 to -6.09; n = 10), and IL-6 (MD, -0.93 pg/mL; 95% CI, -1.72 to -0.14; n = 11). Subgroup analyses suggested a significant reduction at doses ≤5 mg/d and studies longer than 12 weeks in duration. A significant nonlinear association was also found between folic acid dosage (Pnonlinearity <0.001) and duration of administration (Pnonlinearity <0.001) with serum TNF-α levels. IMPLICATIONS This meta-analysis indicates the beneficial effects of folic acid supplementation on pro-inflammatory cytokines. Further studies with a longer duration of administration, higher doses, and larger sample sizes should be performed exclusively on patients with chronic inflammatory disorders to elucidate the favorable role of folate intake on inflammatory biomarkers. Abstract
Purpose An optimal diet for lowering the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is still to be defined, but may comprise of nutrient intakes, dietary patterns, diet quality, and eating frequency. This study was designed to investigate the contribution of diet in developing GDM in a comprehensive way. Methods The dietary intake of overweight or obese women, a risk group for GDM (n = 351), was assessed using 3-day food diaries and diet quality questionnaires in early pregnancy. Eating frequency and nutrient intakes were calculated, and dietary patterns identified using principal component analysis. The inflammatory potential of the diet was determined by calculating the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™). GDM was diagnosed with an oral glucose tolerance test at 24–28 gestational weeks. Results Higher adherence to ‘healthier dietary pattern’ characterized by consumptions of vegetables and rye bread associated with a reduced risk of GDM (adjusted OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11–0.70). Higher E-DII score, indicating pro-inflammatory diet, was associated with a 27% higher risk of GDM (adjusted OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.08–1.49) for each E-DII point. In the evaluation of nutrient intakes, total fat, saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and trans fatty acids were higher and fiber lower in women developing GDM compared to women not developing GDM (all p < 0.05). Intakes of total fat, SFAs, and trans fatty acids were also significant predictors for GDM (all p < 0.05). Conclusions The results emphasize the importance of an overall healthy diet and limitation of foods with SFAs, and other nutrients with a high inflammatory potential in reducing the risk of GDM. Abstract
It has been theorized that folic acid supplementation improves inflammation. However, its proven effects on inflammatory markers are unclear as clinical studies on this topic have produced inconsistent results. To bridge this knowledge gap, this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the effects of folic acid supplementation on serum concentrations of the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Methods: To identify eligible RCTs, a systematic search up to April 2021 was completed in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane databases, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords. A fix or random-effects model was utilized to estimate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: Twelve RCTs were included in the present meta-analysis. The pooled analysis revealed that serum concentrations of CRP (WMD: −0.59 mg/L, 95% CI −0.85 to −0.33, p < 0.001) were significantly reduced following folic acid supplementation compared to placebo, but did not affect serum concentrations of IL-6 (WMD: −0.12, 95% CI −0.95 to 0.72 pg/mL, p = 0.780) or TNF-α (WMD: −0.18, 95% CI −0.86 to 0.49 pg/mL, p = 0.594). The dose–response analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between an elevated dosage of folic acid supplementation and lower CRP concentrations (p = 0.002). Conclusions: We found that folic acid supplementation may improve inflammation by attenuating serum concentrations of CRP but without significant effects on IL-6 and TNF-α. Future RCTs including a larger number of participants and more diverse populations are needed to confirm and expand our findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE In patients with obesity, micronutrient deficiencies have been reported both before and after bariatric surgery (BS). Obesity is a chronic pro-inflammatory status, and inflammation increases the risk of micronutrient malnutrition. Our objective was to assess in pre-BS patients the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and their correlation with blood values of C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS Anthropometric data, instrumental examinations, and blood variables were centrally measured in the first 200 patients undergoing a pre-BS evaluation at the "Città della Salute e della Scienza" Hospital of Torino, starting from January 2018. RESULTS At least one micronutrient deficiency was present in 85.5% of pre-BS patients. Vitamin D deficiency was the most prevalent (74.5%), followed by folate (33.5%), iron (32%), calcium (13%), vitamin B12 (10%), and albumin (5.5%) deficiency. CRP values were high (> 5 mg/L) in 65% of the patients. These individuals showed increased rate of iron, folate, vitamin B12 deficiency, and a higher number of micronutrient deficiencies. In a multiple logistic regression model, increased CRP levels were significantly associated with deficiencies of vitamin B12 (OR = 5.84; 95% CI 1.25-27.2; p = 0.024), folate (OR = 4.02; 1.87-8.66; p < 0.001), and with the presence of ≥ 2 micronutrient deficiencies (OR = 2.31; 1.21-4.42; p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Micronutrient deficiencies are common in patients with severe obesity undergoing BS, especially when inflammation is present. In the presence of increased CRP values before surgery, it might be advisable to search for possible multiple micronutrient deficiencies.

Effects of Folic Acid Supplementation on Oxidative Stress Markers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Antioxidants (Basel) 2021; 10:antiox10060871. Abstract
(1) Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of folic acid supplementation on oxidative stress markers. (2) Methods: Online database including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane were searched up to January 2021, to retrieve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which examined the effect of folic acid supplementation on markers of oxidative stress. Meta-analyses were carried out using a random-effects model. I2 index was used to evaluate the heterogeneity of RCTs. (3) Results: Among the initial 2322 studies that were identified from electronic databases search, 13 studies involving 1013 participants were eligible. Pooled effect size from 13 studies indicated that folic acid supplementation elicits a significant rise in serum concentrations of glutathione (GSH) (WMD: 219.01 umol/L, 95% CI 59.30 to 378.71, p = 0.007) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (WMD: 91.70 umol/L, 95% CI 40.52 to 142.88, p < 0.001) but has no effect on serum concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) (WMD: 2.61 umol/L, 95% CI −3.48 to 8.72, p = 0.400). In addition, folic acid supplementation significantly reduced serum concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD: −0.13 umol/L, 95% CI −0.24 to −0.02, p = 0.020). (4) Conclusions: This meta-analysis study suggests that folic acid supplementation may significantly improve markers within the antioxidative defense system by increasing serum concentrations of GSH and TAC and decreasing serum concentrations of MDA.

Abstract
Evidence concerning effects of ambient air pollution on homocysteine (HCY) metabolism is scarce. We aimed to explore the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure and the HCY metabolism markers and to evaluate effect modifications by folate, vitamin B12, and methylenetetrahyfrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism. Between December 1, 2017 and January 5, 2018, we conducted a panel study in 88 young college students in Guangzhou, China, and received 5 rounds of health examinations. Real-time concentrations of PMs with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 (PM2.5), ≤1.0 (PM1.0), and ≤0.1 (PM0.1) were monitored, and the serum HCY metabolism markers (i.e., HCY, S-Adenosylhomocysteine [SAH], and S-Adenosylmethionine [SAM]) were repeatedly measured. We applied linear mixed effect models combined with a distributed lag model to evaluate the associations of PMs with the HCY metabolism markers. We also explored effect modifications of folate, vitamin B12, and the MTHFR C677T polymorphism on the associations. We observed that higher concentrations of PM2.5 and PM1.0 were associated with higher serum levels of HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio (e.g., a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 during lag 0 day and lag 5 day was significantly associated with 1.3-19.4%, 1.3-28.2%, 6.2-64.4%, and 4.8-28.2% increase in HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio, respectively). In addition, we observed that the associations of PM2.5 with the HCY metabolism markers were stronger in participants with lower B vitamins levels. This study demonstrated that short-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM1.0 was deleteriously associated with the HCY metabolism markers, especially in people with lower B vitamins levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The liver and kidney inflammation due to bacterial infection is one of the most common pathological problems leading to tissue damage or disease. In many liver and kidney disorders, which represent serious global health burden with a high economic cost, oxidative stress-related inflammation and apoptosis are important pathogenic components, finally resulting in acute liver and/or kidney failure. Erythropoietin and its analogues are well known to influence the interaction between apoptosis and inflammation in liver and kidney. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study is to investigate and clarify the effect of Gromphadorhina oblongata red algae on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced acute liver and kidney injury of mice with endotoxemia and associated molecular mechanism from inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress levels. RESULTS The current study cleared out that treatment of rats with the G. oblongata extract prior to LPS injection significantly lowered serum cytokines, including NF-κB, MPO and LPO, and improved liver apoptosis through suppressing protein tyrosine kinase signaling pathway, and that may be due to antibacterial activity as well antioxidant capacity of G. oblongata extract. CONCLUSION The present study was cleared out the possibility of administration of G.oblongata red algae as a multi products source for biotechnological, medical, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications due to highly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities even although more investigations are required for separating, purifying and characterizing these bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) not only leads to disability due to joint changes, but also significantly shortens the life expectancy of patients, mainly due to more frequent occurrence of heart attacks and strokes. Accelerated atherosclerosis in these patients is caused, among other factors, by high homocysteine (HCY) concentration in blood. Numerous studies have shown that treatment with vitamin B significantly reduces the concentration of HCY in blood, but does not reduce the risk of heart diseases. Recent studies have shown, however, that folic acid (FA) administration reduces the risk of stroke by 10–20%. Due to the fact that in patients with RA strokes are more frequent than in the general population and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCY) is often found, determination of HCY concentration in blood is advisable, and in persons with HHCY it is recommended to use FA in primary and secondary stroke prevention.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study assessed associations between inflammatory markers, as cytokines, adhesion molecules and unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) among a population exposed to mandatory fortification. METHODS Data were collected from a cross-sectional population-based survey (n = 302) conducted in São Paulo City, Brazil. UMFA was assayed by a modified affinity-HPLC method with electrochemical detection to measure the different forms of the folate in plasma. We used a commercial test kit to analyze cytokines and adhesion molecules. Multiple logistic regressions were applied to investigate the association between inflammatory markers and UMFA. Multiple models were adjusted for sex, age, self-reported skin color, BMI and smoking status. RESULTS The prevalence of detectable UMFA in this population was high (81.2%), with median concentration of 1.67 nmol/L. The odds ratios (95% CIs) for having higher immunological markers levels among individuals in the highest tertile of UMFA were 0.44 (0.24; 0.81) for TNF-α, 0.92 (0.49; 1.75) for CRP, 1.32 (0.70; 2.48) for ICAM, 0.99 (0.54; 1.81) for VCAM, 0.45 (0.25; 0.83) for IL-1β, 0.74 (0.40; 1.38) for IL-6, 1.34 (0.73; 2.44) for IL-8, 0.65 (0.36; 1.18) for IL-10 and 0.49 (0.27; 0.89) for IL-12. CONCLUSION UMFA concentrations were inversely associated with elevated proinflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-12). These results signalize a link between folate metabolism and the inflammatory status of adults in an apparently folate-replete population.

Abstract
B vitamins involved in one-carbon metabolism have been implicated in the development of inflammation- and angiogenesis-related chronic diseases, such as colorectal cancer (CRC). Yet, the role of one-carbon metabolism in inflammation and angiogenesis among CRC patients remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate associations of components of one-carbon metabolism with inflammation and angiogenesis biomarkers among newly diagnosed CRC patients (n 238) in the prospective ColoCare Study, Heidelberg. We cross-sectionally analysed associations between twelve B vitamins and one-carbon metabolites and ten inflammation and angiogenesis biomarkers from pre-surgery serum samples using multivariable linear regression models. We further explored associations among novel biomarkers in these pathways with Spearman partial correlation analyses. We hypothesised that pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) is inversely associated with inflammatory biomarkers. We observed that PLP was inversely associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) (r -0·33, Plinear < 0·0001), serum amyloid A (SAA) (r -0·23, Plinear = 0·003), IL-6 (r -0·39, Plinear < 0·0001), IL-8 (r -0·20, Plinear = 0·02) and TNFα (r -0·12, Plinear = 0·045). Similar findings were observed for 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate and CRP (r -0·14), SAA (r -0·14) and TNFα (r -0·15) among CRC patients. Folate catabolite acetyl-para-aminobenzoylglutamic acid (pABG) was positively correlated with IL-6 (r 0·27, Plinear < 0·0001), and pABG was positively correlated with IL-8 (r 0·21, Plinear < 0·0001), indicating higher folate utilisation during inflammation. Our data support the hypothesis of inverse associations between PLP and inflammatory biomarkers among CRC patients. A better understanding of the role and inter-relation of PLP and other one-carbon metabolites with inflammatory processes among colorectal carcinogenesis and prognosis could identify targets for future dietary guidance for CRC patients.

Abstract
In Syria, high-Sensitive C-Reactive (hsCRP), folate, and, other health risk data in young women are limited. This cross-sectional study evaluates hsCRP and folate levels along with anthropometric characteristics, lifestyle factors and some biomarkers linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in healthy female students (n = 207, 18-25 years old). Among participants, hsCRP level was at average or high risk of CVD in 20.7% and 2.5% respectively and it was significantly higher in participants who had high body mass index (BMI) (Nonparametric statistical tests, p value < 0.05). Unexpectedly, it did not vary significantly between smokers and nonsmokers. And, it correlated positively with anthropometric and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measurements. While folate level was low in 3.4% of participants, no association between hsCRP and folate levels was found. Finally, low hemoglobin level and habit of waterpipe smoking are spreading; and, sport practicing is shrinking. After reviewing similar works, this study suggests that the possible correlation between hsCRP and folate could be displayed in patients older than 30 years. Also, the marked decrease in hemoglobin level needs more attention. Finally, young females in Syria are advised to consider a lifestyle free of smoking and packed with physical activity.
