Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given that early identification of MetS might decrease CVD risk, it is imperative to establish a simple and cost-effective method to identify individuals at risk of MetS. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between several atherogenic indices (including AIP, TyG index, non-HDL-C, LDL-c/HDL-c, and TC/HDL-c) and MetS, and to assess the ability of these indices to predict MetS. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted using baseline data from 9809 participants of the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study (HCS). MetS was defined based on the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). To examine the discriminatory abilities of each atherogenic indices in the identification of MetS, a receiver-operating characteristic curve was conducted. Logistic regression analysis was also performed to evaluate the relationship between atherogenic indices and MetS. RESULTS All of the atherogenic indices including the TyG index, AIP, non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-c, and LDL-c/HDL-c were significantly higher in participants with MetS than in those without MetS. According to the ROC curve analysis, the TyG index revealed the highest area under the curve (0.79 and 0.85 in men and women, respectively), followed by the AIP (0.76 and 0.83 in men and women, respectively). The best cutoff values for the TyG index and AIP were 8.96 and 0.16 for men and 8.84 and 0.05 for women, respectively. The TyG index and AIP were also strongly associated with MetS. CONCLUSION Among the 5 atherogenic indices evaluated, the TyG index and AIP were strongly related to MetS. The TyG index also demonstrated superior discriminative ability compared to other atherogenic indices in predicting MetS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between changes in Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) in middle-aged and elderly individuals remains unclear. This study aims to explore the association between changes in AIP and CMD. METHODS This study included 3,791 individuals aged over 45 years from CHARLS. Participants were divided into four groups using the K-Means clustering method. Cumulative AIP was used as a quantitative indicator reflecting changes in AIP. Differences in baseline data and CMD incidence rates among these four groups were compared. Multifactorial logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between changes in AIP and CMD, and subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to evaluate potential relationships between changes in AIP and CMD across different subgroups. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to assess the dose-response relationship between cumulative AIP and CMD. RESULTS Changes in AIP were independently and positively associated with CMD. In males, the risk significantly increased in class4 compared to class1 (OR 1.75, 95%CI 1.12-2.73). In females, changes in AIP were not significantly associated with CMD. Cumulative AIP was positively correlated with CMD (OR 1.15, 95%CI 1.01-1.30), with significant gender differences in males (OR 1.29, 95%CI 1.07-1.55) and females (OR 1.03, 95%CI 0.87-1.23) (p for interaction = 0.042). In addition, a linear relationship was observed between cumulative AIP and CMD in male. CONCLUSION Substantial changes in AIP may increase the risk of CMD in middle-aged and elderly Chinese males. Dynamic monitoring of AIP is of significant importance for the prevention and treatment of CMD.

Abstract
Background Dyslipidemia is strongly associated with the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), as a comprehensive index for assessing lipid metabolism, has received extensive attention from researchers in recent years. However, there are relatively few studies exploring the relationships between AIP and the risk of prediabetes and T2DM in the Chinese population. This study focuses on exploring the relationships of AIP with the risk of prediabetes and T2DM in the Chinese population. Methods We conducted an analysis of the public data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), involving a total of 12,060 participants aged 45 years and above in China. The study explored the relationships of AIP with prediabetes and T2DM risk through multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis. Results After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we observed positive associations between AIP and the risk of prediabetes [odds ratio (OR) = 1.75, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.49-2.06] and T2DM (OR = 2.91, 95% CI: 2.38-3.57). Participants with higher AIP levels demonstrated a significantly elevated risk of prediabetes (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.33-1.74) and T2DM (OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.92-2.71) compared to those with lower AIP levels. AIP showed consistent correlations with prediabetes and T2DM risk in different subgroups. The results showed the non-linear relationships between AIP and risk of prediabetes and T2DM, with inflection points at 0.29 and -0.04, respectively. When AIP > 0.29, there was a positive association between AIP and the risk of prediabetes (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.67-3.00, p < 0.0001). Similarly, when AIP > -0.04, AIP was positively associated with the risk of T2DM (OR = 3.33, 95% CI: 2.67-4.16, p < 0.0001). Conclusions This study demonstrated non-linear positive associations of AIP with the risk of prediabetes and T2DM among participants ≥ 45 years of age in China.

Abstract
PURPOSE The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been shown to be related to cardiovascular disease risk, but evidence on the longitudinal pattern of AIP during follow-up is limited. We aimed to explore the associations of baseline and long-term AIP with the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS We included 98,861 participants in the Kailuan Study who were free of MI at baseline. AIP was calculated as log (triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Long-term AIP included the long-term mean AIP (mean AIP from baseline to the first occurrence of MI or the end of follow-up) and number of visits with high AIP (above the cutoff value at the first three visits). The baseline and updated mean AIP were in operationalized as quartiles. Cox proportional hazard models were used to determine the associations between AIP and risk of MI. We excluding all deaths during the follow-up visits in the sensitivity analysis. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.80 years, 1804 participants developed MI. Compared with quartile 1, the adjusted hazard ratios in baseline and updated mean AIP quartile 4 were 1.63 (95% CI, 1.41-1.88) and 1.59 (95% CI, 1.37-1.83), respectively. Compared with participants who did not have a high AIP, the HR among individuals with AIP elevated by three times was 1.94 (95% CI,1.55-2.45). The sensitivity analysis showed similar associations. CONCLUSIONS Elevated levels of both baseline and long-term AIP increased the risk of MI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia patients endure high risks of metabolic syndrome and related cardiovascular mortality. Evidence on comparing detective power among atherogenic indices of the metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia patients with antipsychotics treatment is still lacking. METHOD We recruited 128 schizophrenia patients and collected blood samples to determine plasma levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Five components of metabolic syndrome were assessed. Atherogenic indices, such as atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), atherogenic coefficient (AC), Castelli's risk index-I (CRI-I) and Castelli's risk index-II (CRI-II), were calculated. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) and regression analysis were adopted to compare the detective power of each atherogenic index for metabolic syndrome. The optimal cutoff points using maximization of Youden's index and the positive likelihood ratios were calculated. RESULTS 51 (39.8 %) had metabolic syndrome. AIP (0.2 ± 0.2 vs. 0.6 ± 0.2), AC (2.5 ± 0.9 vs. 3.4 ± 0.9), CRI-I (3.5 ± 0.9 vs. 4.4 ± 0.9,) and CRI-II (2.1 ± 0.7 vs. 2.6 ± 0.7) were higher in the group with metabolic syndrome (all p < 0.001). AIP had the highest AUC (0.845, 95 % CI: 0.770, 0.920). The optimal cut-off point of AIP to predict metabolic syndrome was 0.4 with the corresponding sensitivity 83.7 %, specificity 80.3 %, and positive likelihood ratio 4.2. Regression analysis revealed that only AIP significantly correlated with the metabolic syndrome (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Among atherogenic indices, only AIP has superior discrimination for detecting metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia with antipsychotics treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the correlation between Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and early neurological deterioration (END) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS A retrospective analysis of 334 patients diagnosed with AIS between January 2021 and May 2023 at the Affiliated Huai'an Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University. Patients were divided into END and non-END groups based on changes in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale scores (NIHSS) within 7 days of admission, and the differences in the indicators between the two groups were examined using univariate analysis. The patients were then divided into three groups based on the tertile of the AIP (T1: AIP≤ -0.01; T2: 0 ≤AIP≤0.16; AIP≥0.17), and logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between the AIP and END. Finally, the predictive ability of the AIP was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS A total of 334 patients were included, of which 64 (19.20%) had END. The results of the analysis showed that the AIP was significantly higher in the END group compared to the non-END group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that higher AIP was associated with END in AIS patients (OR=3.259, 95%CI, 1.490-7.125, P = 0.003), especially in large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) subtype (OR=4.240, 95%CI,1.30-13.87, P = 0.017). ROC analysis revealed that the best predictive cutoff value of AIP was 0.115, and the area under the ROC curves for AIP was 0.681(0.604-0.758). CONCLUSION Our study uncovered that higher AIP levels were associated with END development in AIS patients.

Abstract
Purpose Diabetes is an important contributor to the progression of atherosclerosis (AS). We aimed to investigate the correlation between ketosis episodes and lipid-related parameters in patients with new-onset ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes (KPT2D), further attempting to assess the impact of ketosis episodes on AS. Patients and Methods A cross-sectional study of 147 subjects with new-onset diabetes was performed, including 65 KPT2D subjects (KPT2D group) and 82 non-ketotic type 2 diabetes (T2D) (T2D group) subjects. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured in all subjects. Calculation of atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) by traditional lipid parameters. Results The AIP (P = 0.008) level and the percentage of AIP ≥ 0.24 (P = 0.026) in subjects with KPT2D were higher than in subjects with T2D. The apoA1 (P = 0.001) levels were significantly lower in patients with KPT2D than in patients with T2D. In the KPT2D group, plasma ketones were positively correlated with AIP (P = 0.023) and negatively correlated with apoA1 (P = 0.002). Univariate logistic regression suggested that plasma ketone (OR = 1.704, P = 0.040) was an important related factor for the AS in subjects with KPT2D. Multiple linear regression suggested plasma ketone was significantly positive with AIP (β = 0.437, P = 0.020). In multiple linear regression analysis suggests that apolipoprotein A1 (β = -0.335, P = 0.033) is strongly associated with ketotic episodes in newly diagnosed ketosis-prone type 2 diabetic patients. Conclusion Ketosis episodes in patients with KPT2D were significantly and positively associated with elevated AIP levels and reduced apoA1 levels. Frequent ketosis episodes may accelerate the progression of AS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a novel biomarker associated with atherosclerosis, and an important risk factor for atherosclerosis, but its relation with cardiovascular prognosis in prediabetic patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is still uncertain. METHODS This study included 1096 prediabetic patients with UAP who were subjected to follow-up for a maximum of 30 months, with cardiac death, refractory angina, and non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI) being the primary cardiovascular endpoints. RESULTS A significantly increased AIP was observed for the group with primary cardiovascular endpoints. Kaplan-Meier curves corresponding to these endpoints revealed pronounced differences between these two AIP groups (Log-rank P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses highlighted AIP as being independent related to this primary endpoint (HR 1.308, 95% CI: 1.213-1.412, P < 0.001). AIP addition to the baseline risk model improved the prediction of the primary endpoint (AUC: baseline model, 0.622, vs. baseline model + AIP, 0.739, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AIP could be used to predict cardiovascular events in prediabetic individuals with UAP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been confirmed as a novel marker for myocardial infarction (MI), but few evidence on the long-term AIP and MI risk in general populations. We thus aimed to evaluate the relationships of cumulative exposure to AIP and its accumulation time course with the risk of MI. METHODS A total of 54,440 participants were enrolled in the Kailuan study. Time-weighted cumulative AIP was calculated as the weighted sum of the mean AIP value for each time interval, then normalized by total exposure duration, the exposure duration was from 2006 to 2010. Duration of high AIP exposure was defined as the duration with high AIP and ranged from 0 to 6 years. The time course of AIP accumulation was categorized by the combination of time-weighted cumulative AIP < or ≥ median (- 0.12) and AIP slope. RESULTS After 11.05 years of follow-up, 766 incident MI cases were documented. After adjustment for potential confounders, higher risk of MI was observed in participants with the highest time-weighted cumulative AIP quartile (HR, 1.89; 95% CI 1.47-2.43), the longest exposure duration of high AIP (HR, 1.52; 95% CI 1.18-1.95), and those with high time-weighted cumulative AIP and negative slope (HR, 1.42; 95% CI 1.13-1.79). CONCLUSIONS Long-term cumulative exposure to AIP and the time course of AIP accumulation increased the risk of MI. High AIP earlier resulted in a greater risk increase than later in life with the same time-weighted cumulative AIP, emphasizing the importance of controlling atherogenic dyslipidemia early in life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The potential predictive significance of atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) for cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), with low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) below 1.8mmol/L, has not been well explored. METHODS The retrospective cohort analysis included 1,133 patients with ACS and LDL-C levels below 1.8mmol/L who underwent PCI. AIP is calculated as log (triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol). Patients were divided into two groups according to the median value of AIP. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs), a composite of all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke or unplanned repeat revascularization. The association between AIP and the prevalence of MACCE was evaluated using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 26 months, the incidence of MACCE was higher in the high AIP group compared to the low AIP group (9.6% vs. 6.0%, P log-rank = 0.020), and the difference was mainly derived from an increased risk of unplanned repeat revascularization (7.6% vs. 4.6%, P log-rank = 0.028). After adjusting for multiple variables, elevated AIP was independently associated with an increased risk of MACCE, regardless of whether AIP was considered a nominal or continuous variable (hazard ratio [HR] 1.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-2.53 or HR 2.01, 95% CI 1.09-3.73). CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrates that AIP is a significant predictor of adverse outcomes in ACS patients undergoing PCI with LDL-C < 1.8mmol/L. These results suggest that AIP may offer supplementary prognostic information for ACS patients with optimally managed LDL-C levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is considered a powerful biomarker of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis (AS). However, limited evidence is available regarding the relationship between the AIP and carotid artery plaques (CAPs) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS This retrospective study included 9281 patients with CHD who underwent carotid ultrasound. Participants were divided according to the AIP tertiles: T1, AIP < 1.02; T2, 1.02 ≤ AIP < 1.25; and T3, AIP ≥ 1.25. The presence or absence of CAPs was assessed using carotid ultrasound. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between the AIP and CAPs in patients with CHD. The relationship between the AIP and CAPs was assessed according to sex, age, and glucose metabolic status. RESULTS The baseline characteristics revealed significant differences in related parameters among patients with CHD after stratification into the three groups according to the AIP tertiles. Compared with T1, the odds ratio (OR) of T3 in patients with CHD was 1.53 (95% confidence interval [CI]:1.35-1.74). The association between AIP and CAPs was higher in females (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.38-1.92) than in males (OR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.12-1.70). The OR for patients aged ≤60 years (OR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.14-1.71) was lower than that for patients aged >60 years (OR: 1.49; 95% CI: 1.26-1.76). AIP was significantly associated with the risk of CAPs formation in different glucose metabolic states, with diabetes having the highest OR value (OR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.19-1.43). CONCLUSION The AIP and CAPs were significantly associated in patients with CHD, and the association was higher in female than in male patients. The association was lower in patients aged ≤60 years than in patients aged >60 years. Under different glucose metabolism statuses, the association between the AIP and the CAPs among patients with CHD was highest in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Pre-metabolic syndrome (pre-MetS) may represent the best transition phase to start treatments aimed at reducing cardiometabolic risk factors of MetS. In this study, we investigated the effects of the marine microalga Tisochrysis lutea F&M-M36 (T. lutea) on cardiometabolic components of pre-MetS and its underlying mechanisms. Rats were fed a standard (5% fat) or a high-fat diet (20% fat) supplemented or not with 5% of T. lutea or fenofibrate (100 mg/Kg) for 3 months. Like fenofibrate, T. lutea decreased blood triglycerides (p < 0.01) and glucose levels (p < 0.01), increased fecal lipid excretion (p < 0.05) and adiponectin (p < 0.001) without affecting weight gain. Unlike fenofibrate, T. lutea did not increase liver weight and steatosis, reduced renal fat (p < 0.05), diastolic (p < 0.05) and mean arterial pressure (p < 0.05). In visceral adipose tissue (VAT), T. lutea, but not fenofibrate, increased the β3-adrenergic receptor (β3ADR) (p < 0.05) and Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) (p < 0.001) while both induced glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) protein expression (p < 0.001) and decreased interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β gene expression (p < 0.05). Pathway analysis on VAT whole-gene expression profiles showed that T. lutea up-regulated energy-metabolism-related genes and down-regulated inflammatory and autophagy pathways. The multitarget activity of T. lutea suggests that this microalga could be useful in mitigating risk factors of MetS.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the association of plant-based diet indices with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its novel predictive biomarkers, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and adropin. We aimed to investigate the association of plant-based diets with adropin, atherogenic index of plasma, and MetS and its components in adults. Methods The present population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative sample of adults aged 20-60 years in Isfahan, Iran. Dietary intake was obtained through a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Peripheral blood was obtained after an overnight fast of at least 12 h from each participant. MetS was identified based on the Joint Interim Statement (JIS). AIP was calculated as a logarithmically transformed ratio of triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and serum levels of adropin were measured by an ELISA kit. Results A total of 28.7% of subjects had MetS. No significant association was found between the overall plant-based diet index (PDI) and the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI) with MetS. However, a non-linear association was observed between hPDI and MetS. Subjects in the third quartile of the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI) had higher odds of MetS compared to the first quartile (OR: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.01, 5.66). The highest quartile of PDI (OR: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.97) and the third quartile of hPDI (OR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.89) were associated with decreased odds of having high-risk AIP compared to the first quartile, after adjusting for potential confounders. No linear association was found between quartiles of plant-based diet indices and serum levels of adropin. Conclusion Plant-based diet index (PDI) and hPDI were not associated with the prevalence of MetS in adults, while moderate adherence to uPDI increased the prevalence of MetS. In addition, high adherence to PDI and moderate adherence to hPDI were associated with decreased odds of high-risk AIP. No significant association was found between plant-based diet indices and serum adropin levels. To confirm these findings, further studies with prospective designs are warranted.

Abstract
The influence of sex combined with smoking and combined oral contraceptives (COC) use on atherogenic indexes is scarcely studied. Thus, traditional lipid parameters were measured, and non-traditional atherogenic indexes were calculated in a young and healthy population of men, COC-free women, and COC users. Total cholesterol (TChol), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and HDL/LDL ratio were lower in men, while triglycerides (TG)/HDL ratio, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli's Risk Index I (CRII) and CRI-II, atherogenic coefficient (AC), creatinine, creatinine clearance, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were higher in men. The use of COC modified TChol, HDL, TG, TG/HDL, and AIP which had significantly higher values in COC users. In addition, TG were also increased in COC users in comparison with men. Smoking reduced sexually divergent parameters: BMI, TG, HDL/LDL, TG/HDL, AIP, CRII, CRI-II, and AC became similar among the three cohorts, losing the reported sex differences. Smoking also reduced differences in TChol, HDL, TG, and AIP between COC-free women and COC users, but it does not affect CRII, CRI-II, creatinine, creatinine clearance, and eGFR, underlining that COC users and COC-free women have to be considered two different populations. Our results represent a complex landscape suggesting that for both sexes smoking should be an independent variable in medical studies. Moreover, in women, the use of COC evidenced two different cohorts. Thus, more variables should be considered during a single study indicating that sex, smoking, and COC should be studied together to get a picture of the real-life context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Colorectal neoplasms (CRN) include colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal adenoma (CRA). The relationship between CRN and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index or between CRN and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is unclear. This study aims to investigate the roles of TyG index and AIP in predicting CRN in people without cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS 2409 patients without CVD underwent colonoscopy were enrolled. Clinical information and relevant laboratory test results of these patients were collected and recorded. According to endoscopic and pathological results, all participants were divided into a neoplasms group and a non-neoplasms group. The TyG index was calculated as ln (TGs×FPG/2), while AIP was calculated as log (TGs/HDL-C). We used uni- and multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) to analyze the association between the TyG inedx, AIP and CRN, develop predictive models and construct the nomograms. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to evaluate the predictive value for CRN. RESULTS Participants in the neoplasms group were more likely to be older, have higher TyG index, higher AIP and higher rates of fecal occult blood test positivity, and were more likely to be male, smokers and those with the family history of CRC (P < 0.05). The higher TyG index was related to the higher risk of CRN [OR (95% CI): 1.23 (1.08 - 1.41), P = 0.003]. The higher AIP was related to the higher risk of CRN [OR (95% CI): 1.55 (1.16 - 2.06), P = 0.003]. These two indicators are better for predicting CRN in women than men. The combined use of the TyG index and other independent risk factors (age, sex, smoking status, family history and FOBT) to distinguish CRN was effective, with a sensitivity of 61.0%, a specificity of 65.1% and an AUC of 0.669 (95%CI, 0.639 - 0.698). Likewise, the combined use of the AIP and other independent risk factors to distinguish CRN was also effective, the model had an overall 56.3% sensitivity and 68.7% specificity with an AUC of 0.667 (95%CI, 0.638 - 0.697). CONCLUSION This study showed that the TyG index and the AIP might be biomarkers that could be used to predict the risk of CRN in patients without CVD.

Abstract
Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a novel biomarker, is associated with cardiovascular diseases and obesity. The main aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between AIP and obesity among Taiwanese hospital employees. A total of 1312 subjects with an average age of 42.39 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. AIP was calculated as log10 (TG/HDL-C). All subjects were divided into three groups according to AIP tertiles. Chi-square test, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to compare the demographic and clinical lab characteristics of the three groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between AIP and obesity. The results showed that subjects with obesity or with high AIP levels exhibited significant differences in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, alanine aminotransferase, fasting plasma glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and metabolic syndrome. In addition, age and total cholesterol were increased in the high AIP group. Increased AIP levels were strongly associated with obesity.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is currently a major public health challenge in young, middle aged and elderly population worldwide, but it is still not clear in very elderly population. This study was to investigate the potential association between total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (THR) and MetS in a very elderly population in Chengdu. Totally, 1056 very elderly (aged ≥ 80 years) in Chengdu community were enrolled in this study. Geographic characteristics of participants were collected and laboratory measurement was performed. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined according to the Chinese and the international diabetes federation (IDF) criteria, respectively. Logistic analysis was used to investigate the potential association between the THR and MetS. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the efficiency of THR in MetS predicting. Finally, 1038 participants were included in statistical analysis. The mean age was 83.6 ± 3.4 years and 52.6% participants were men and 21.6% suffered from MetS. Participants with MetS had relatively higher waist circumference, body weight, blood pressure, fast plasma glucose level, non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol level and THR. The logistic analysis revealed that the THR was associated with MetS according to both the Chinese (odds ratio (OR): 3.053, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.464–3.782, P < 0.001) and the IDF criteria (OR: 2.458, 95% CI 2.016–2.995, P < 0.001). ROC analysis found that the area under curve of the THR was 0.800 (95% CI 0.749–0.852, P < 0.001) and 0.727 (95% CI 0.669–0.786, P < 0.001) for predicting MetS according to the Chinese and the IDF criteria, respectively. The THR is associated with MetS in this community very elderly population in Chengdu.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome is a pathological entity associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease. Data regarding the frequency of this syndrome, lipid profile, and atherogenic index of plasma in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis are scarce. We aim to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with spondyloarthritis. We also aim to determine discriminative values of atherogenic indexes between patients with and without metabolic syndrome. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study including 51 patients meeting the ASAS 2009 criteria for radiographic axial spondyloarthritis. We measured the following parameters: triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoproteins (HDLc), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), and total cholesterol (TC). We calculated TC/HDLc, TG/HDLc, LDLc/HDLc ratios, and atherogenic index of plasma (LogTG/HDLc). RESULTS Metabolic syndrome was noted in 33% of cases. Patients with active disease had a higher body mass index (26.89±5.88 versus 23.63±4.47kg/m2, p=0.03), higher TG (1.41±0.64 versus 0.89±0.5mmol/L, p=0.05) and a lower HDLc level (1±0.28 versus 1.31±0.22mmol/L, p=0.01). However, the LogTG/HDLc and TG/HDLc were higher in patients under TNFα inhibitors. The ability of the TG/HDLc ratio and LogTG/HDLc to distinguish patients with or without metabolic syndrome were good at cut-offs of 1.33 and 0.22, respectively (specificity: 91.2% and sensitivity 70.6% for both ratios). CONCLUSION Our study showed that metabolic syndrome is frequent in patients with axial spondyloarthritis. Atherogenic indexes can be used for predicting metabolic syndrome in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The metabolic syndrome (Mets) is a multiplex risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. The aims of the study were to assess the association of the Mets with TyG index and TyG-related parameters in an urban Chinese population. METHODS The data were collected in 1992 and then again in 2007 from the same group of 590 individuals (363 males and 227 females) without Mets in 1992. The fasting lipid profile and blood glucose were measured. TyG index and related parameters were calculated, and Mets defined according to the harmonized criteria. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic curves was used to evaluate TyG index and related parameters for their diagnostic ability to identify people with Mets. Odd ratios (OR) for Mets prediction were calculated using stepwise logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The incidence of Mets was 18.64% over the 15-year follow-up period.During 15 years' follow-up, TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR) shows the largest AUC for Mets detection (0.686) followed by TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC) (0.660), TyG-waist-to-hip ratio (TyG-WHpR) (0.564), and TyG index (0.556) in all participants. Gender analysis revealed that TyG-WHtR and TyG-WC have the largest AUC in both genders. TyG-WHtR significantly predicted Mets in all participants, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 5.63 (95% CI 3.23-9.83 P < 0.001). Associations remained significant after adjustment for smoking, drinking, physical exercise and components of Mets. CONCLUSIONS TyG-WHtR might be a strong and independent predictor for Mets in all participants in an urban Chinese population. TyG-related markers that combine obesity markers with TyG index are superior to other parameters in identifying Mets in both genders.

Abstract
Background Non-diabetic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients are thought to encounter metabolic dysfunction and while these changes may be imperceptible to the patient they probably influence outcomes. At present, there is no system to support patients sensing these subtle changes, nor is there an established model for prognoses. The Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) index has already proven useful for atherosclerosis although further research is needed, especially for those without hyperglycemia. Methods This is a prospective study of 5538 non-diabetic CAD patients who had received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Participants were assigned to one of three groups according to their AIP index. High AIP index cases were then compared to low index patients according to major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was also conducted to investigate interrelations between AIP index levels and hazard ratios (HR) for MACEs. Results Patients with a high AIP index encountered metabolic dysfunction compared to those with a low AIP index i.e., higher Body Mass Index (BMI), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), and uric acid as well as lower HDL-C. Each of the aforementioned interrelations were significant with p values of less than 0.001. There was also a significant increase in the number of MACEs in the high AIP index group compared to the low AIP index group (HR: 1.37, 95% CI 1.04–1.81; p = 0.025). A J-shaped RCS curve highlighted a change in the HR after the 0.18 juncture (HR per SD: 1.20, 95% CI 0.96–1.50). Further subgroup analysis supported the main findings, all with HRs greater than one. Conclusion The AIP index could be used in prognostics for non-diabetic CAD patients 2 years after PCI. The relationship between hazard ratio and the AIP index appears to be J-shaped. Although, further multi-center studies designed for non-diabetic patients with potential metabolic dysfunction should be conducted to determine the value of the AIP index.

Abstract
Aim: The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was significantly related to adverse outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease. Our aim was to investigate the association between AIP and adverse outcomes in acute ischemic stroke. Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admitted between 2015 and 2018 were prospectively enrolled in this study. Functional outcomes were evaluated by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Poor outcomes were defined as mRS 3–6. The relationship of AIP with the risk of outcomes was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression models. Results: A total of 1,463 patients with AIS within 24 h of symptom onset were enrolled. The poor outcome group had a significantly higher level of AIP [0.09 (−0.10 to 0.27) vs. 0.04 (−0.09 to 0.18), p < 0.001] compared with the good outcome group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that higher AIP was associated with poor outcomes in all the stroke patients (OR 1.84, 95% CI, 1.23–2.53, p = 0.007), which was more evident in patients with large-artery atherosclerosis subtype (OR 1.90, 95% CI, 1.53–2.62, p = 0.002), but not in the other subtypes. Receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis revealed that the best predictive cutoff value of AIP was 0.112, with a sensitivity of 70.8% and a specificity of 59.2%, and the area under the ROC curves for AIP was 0.685. Conclusion: AIP may be an important and independent predictor of the outcome of dysfunction in patients with AIS, especially the stroke subtype of large-artery atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Background: Inconsistent results due to age, ethnic, and geographic differences have been found on the predictive capacity of atherogenic indices in previous studies. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of 6 atherogenic indices for MetS in a Spanish adolescent population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 981 adolescents (13.2 ± 1.2y) that were randomly recruited from schools in Southeastern Spain. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were evaluated to identify the presence of MetS. The following atherogenic indices were calculated: triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), non-HDL cholesterol, triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c), LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol ratio (LDL-c/HDL-c), and total cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL-c). Results: The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic curves was used for discrimination purposes. AIP was the atherogenic index most strongly associated with MetS with an unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of 37.98 in boys and of 28.75 in girls. A high OR was maintained after adjustment by different factors. AUC values for all atherogenic indices were above 0.83 and 0.88 in boys and in girls, respectively. Conclusions: Among the 6 atherogenic indices studied, AIP was the one most strongly associated with MetS in Spanish adolescents. The AUC values obtained from ROC analyses suggest that all atherogenic indices have the ability to predict MetS. These atherogenic indices are interesting and useful predictive indicators for MetS. However, more studies are needed to explore in-depth this predictive capacity.

Abstract
Aim: Recently, the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been proposed as a novel, reliable plasma atherogenicity marker. This study aimed to investigate the association of AIP with the risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled patients with ACS followed by angiography within 6 to 18 months after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with a drug-eluting stent (DES). And the participants were divided into ISR or non-ISR groups based on the angiographic follow-up results. AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of serum triglyceride (mmol/L) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mmol/L).
Results: This study recruited 1319 patients with ACS, 199 of which had ISR. Compared with the non-ISR group, patients in the ISR group had higher level of AIP (0.199±0.290 vs 0.131±0.282,p=0.002). In the multiple logistic regression analysis, AIP was an independent risk factor for DES-ISR (OR=2.100, 95% CI 1.134 to 3.891,p=0.018). When we modulated AIP as a categorical variable, the risk of DES-ISR increased in quartile 4 compared to quartile 1 (OR=1.713, 95% CI 1.040 to 2.822,p=0.034). Furthermore, this association remains stable in various subgroups. Unexpectedly, the subgroup analysis suggested AIP and DES-ISR had a stronger positive association in individuals with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) <1.8 mmol/L.
Conclusions: AIP and the risk of DES-ISR were positively and independently correlated in patients with ACS, especially in those with an LDL-C <1.8 mmol/L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is known to be accompanied with increased cardiovascular mortality, which causes reduced life expectancy. AIM The aim of the current study was to investigate if atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) could be a good marker in assessing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS Patients with schizophrenia (n = 328) and healthy controls (n = 141) were recruited. Schizophrenia patients were evaluated according to the presence of antipsychotic (AP) drug use as AP(+)Sch group and AP(-)Sch group. Atherogenic indices, such as AIP, Castelli's risk index-I (CRI-I), Castelli's risk index-II (CRI-II), and atherogenic coefficient (AC), were calculated according to the laboratory examination of serum lipid parameters. RESULTS According to the comparison of serum lipid levels, triglyceride (TG) levels were found to be highest and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were lowest in AP(+)Sch group than AP(-)Sch group and control group (CG) (p < 0.001). AIP, CRI-I, and CRI-II scores were found to be significantly higher in AP(+)Sch group than AP(-)Sch group, and in AP(-)Sch than healthy controls (p < 0.001). Mean AC scores were higher in AP(+)Sch group than both AP(-)Sch and CG and were similar in AP(-)Sch and control subjects (p < 0.001). According to the correlation analysis, AIP scores were positively correlated with duration of disease (r = 0.235; p = 0.002) and age (r = 0.226; p = 0.003) in AP(+)Sch group but not in drug-free subjects. In all groups, atherogenic indices of CRI-I, CRI-II, and AC scores were found to be positively correlated with AIP scores (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that AIP is an easily calculable and reliable marker for determining the CVD risk in both drug-free schizophrenia patients and patients under AP treatment.

Abstract
Background The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) always remains in a potential association with arterial stiffness, however, this association has not been fully discovered and needs to be studied in depth in large hypertensive patient populations. The present analysis thus sought to further explore the association that exists between AIP and arterial stiffness in Chinese patients diagnosed with arterial hypertension. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 4744 Chinese individuals with essential hypertension. AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of plasma of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels indicated in molar concentrations. Measurement of arterial stiffness was carried out via brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Results Data were adjusted for potential confounding variables, and multivariate linear regression analysis revealed AIP to be positively correlated with baPWV (β = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.96 to 1.72, P < 0.001). When AIP was instead treated as a categorical variable divided into quartiles, the same relationship was observed (P for trend < 0.001). We additionally found AIP and baPWV had a stronger positive association in individuals with a body mass index (BMI) < 24 kg/m2 (P for interaction < 0.05). Conclusion AIP and arterial stiffness were positively correlated in essential hypertension patients in China, especially in those with a BMI < 24 kg/m2. Clinical trial registration ChiCTR1800017274.

BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on the predictive ability of visceral obesity-related indices for metabolic syndrome (MetS), especially in different ethnic groups. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of visceral obesity-related indices for MetS screening among three major ethnic groups living in remote rural areas of Xinjiang. METHODS Based on multistage stratified cluster random sampling method, 3,192 Uyghurs, 3,054 Kazakhs, and 3,658 Hans were recruited from Xinjiang, China. The Joint Interim Statement (JIS) criteria were used to define MetS. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the ROC curve (AUC), and predictive value of each visceral obesity-related index were used to evaluate the predictive ability of MetS. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the lipid accumulation product (LAP), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were significantly correlated with MetS for each ethnic group, and the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS increased across quartiles. LAP was best able to identify MetS status in Kazakhs (AUC=0.853) and Uyghurs (AUC=0.851), with optimal cut-offs being 36.3 and 28.2, respectively. Both LAP (AUC=0.798) and CVAI (AUC=0.791) most accurately identified MetS status in Hans, with the optimal cut-offs being 27.3 and 85.0, respectively. Moreover, the AUC of the combination of these visceral obesity-related indices is higher for each ethnic group. However, compared with LAP, the improved value of combined screening was not significant. CONCLUSION LAP had the best discriminative capability for the screening of MetS among Kazakhs, Uyghurs, and Hans. The screening ability of CVAI for MetS was similar to that of LAP in Hans. Thus, LAP may be a complementary indicator for assessing MetS in various ethnic groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are at high risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a new marker for the assessment of CVD. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the predictive value of AIP with long-term CVD risk among women with RA and SLE. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 99 RA and 59 SLE women. Demographic, clinical, and biochemical data were obtained, and disease activities were calculated. For each patient, the longterm risk of CVD was calculated using the Framingham risk score (FRS); AIP was derived according to the logarithmic (triglycerides/high-density lipoproteins cholesterol). RESULTS The mean age of the RA and SLE patients was 47.97 ± 8.78 and 36.75 ± 9.09 years, respectively. The median (interquartile range) of AIP values in RA and SLE patients were 0.34 (-0.15, 1.02) and 0.33 (-0.53, 0.96), respectively, while FRS values of RA patients and SLE patients were 6.38 ± 5.58 and 4.86 ± 4.5, respectively (p >0.05). There was a moderate correlation between AIP and FRS in RA and SLE patients (r=0.42, p=0.002 and r=0.33, p=0.007, respectively). According to the multivariate regression analyses, we found that AIP value is an independent factor for FRS in RA (β: 4.13, 95% confidence interval; 1.71, 6.18; p=0.008) and in SLE patients (β: 6.19, 95% confidence interval; 2.58, 9.81; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We reported that AIP can be used as an independent indicator for long-term CVD risk in RA and SLE patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) reflects the levels of triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the AIP and severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) were prospectively enrolled from March 2015 to June 2019. The severity of AP was classified according to the 2012 revised Atlanta classification. Mild and moderately severe AP were categorized as non-SAP. The AIP is calculated as log(TG/HDL). RESULTS A total of 323 patients were enrolled. The etiologies of AP were gallstone in 171 patients (52.9%), alcohol in 122 patients (37.8%), and hypertriglyceridemia in 30 patients (9.3%). Twenty-four patients (7.4%) were classified as SAP. The AIP was significantly higher in the SAP group compared to the non-SAP group (p < 0.001). The AIP was positively correlated with the Atlanta classification (R = 0.256, p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, the AIP was found to be an independent predictive factor for SAP (OR = 4.571; CI = 1.913-10.922; p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The AIP is a potential biomarker for the prediction of SAP in clinical practice. This result provides that impaired lipid metabolism is associated with the severity of pancreatitis.

Abstract
Background Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with several comorbidities and vascular risk factors, such as dyslipidemia. The present study aimed to assess the possible associations between the lipid profile and atherogenic indexes and the severity of HS. Methods This case-control study enrolled 78 HS patients and 62 healthy controls. Classic lipid profile and lipoprotein ratios, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), were evaluated. The severity of HS was measured by the HS Physician Global Assessment (PGA). Results HS-patients had lower serum total cholesterol and HDL-C levels and higher AIP than the control group. AIP was positively correlated to BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, LDL-C, triglycerides, non-HDL-C, ApoB, HOMA, and hs-CRP and negatively to HDL-C and ApoA1. For the overall lipid profile, only AIP was related to a more severe HS (PGA ≥ 3) after controlling for age, sex, BMI, insulin resistance (IR), active smoking, and statin use (r = 0.268; p = 0.023). Multiple logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, BMI, IR, smoking status and statin use, showed that AIP ≥ 0.11 was significantly associated with the severity of HS (OR, 4.38; CI 95%, 1.09–17.50; p = 0.037). Conclusions In conclusion, these results showed that AIP is significantly and independently associated with HS severity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite previous investigations on the effects of zinc supplementation on blood pressure, inconsistent findings are available in this regard. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials on the effects of zinc supplementation on blood pressure (BP) in adults. METHODS Relevant studies published up to September 2019 were searched through PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar using suitable keywords. All randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that examined the effect of oral zinc supplementation on systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in adults were included. RESULTS Overall, nine trials were included in our study. Zinc supplementation significantly reduced SBP compared to the control [weighted mean differences (WMD) - 1.49 mmHg; 95% CI - 2.85 to - 0.13; P = 0.03]. However, zinc supplementation had no significant effects on DBP (WMD - 0.88 mmHg; 95% CI - 2.04 to 0.29; P = 0.14). Nonlinear analysis failed to indicate a significant influence of supplementation dosage or duration on both SBP and DBP. Sensitivity analysis showed that no individual study had a significant impact on our final results. In addition, we found no evidence for the presence of small-study effects among studies for both SBP and DBP. CONCLUSION We found a significant reduction in SBP following zinc supplementation. However, zinc supplementation had no significant effect on DBP. In addition, no nonlinear association was found between supplementation dosage and duration with changes in both SBP and DBP. Further RCTs using different dosages of zinc in various durations are required to confirm our conclusion.
