Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamins are essential nutrients that play an indispensable role in maintaining the vital functions of the human body. A growing number of studies have shown a link between vitamins and cancer. However, there is no systematic review and bibliometric analysis in this field. This study aims to summarize the hotspots and emerging research topics in this field of vitamins and cancer research. METHODS Articles on the topic of vitamins and cancer published between 2003 and 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database (WOSCC) on May 1, 2023. Subsequently, we conducted VOSviewer and CiteSpace to examine the annual output distribution, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, co-cited references, and keywords. RESULTS A total of 3166 publications were extracted using a timespan of 2003 to 2022. The number of publications has grown rapidly over the past 20 years. Most publications were from the United States; Harvard University was the most active institutions; Giovannucci stood out among authors with the highest number of publications, citations and H-index; Cancer Epidem Biomar published the most papers in this field; the highest cited reference was published in Nat Rev Cancer, authored by Feldman in 2014. Breast cancer was the most common type of cancer, while vitamin D was a research hotspot in this field. Oxidative stress may be the primary anticancer mechanism of vitamins, while also involving epithelial-mesenchymal transition, apoptosis, polymorphism, and calcium metabolism. "nanoparticle" may be the new focus of attention in the next few years. CONCLUSION This study presented an overview of the major research directions of vitamins and cancer by bibliometric methods over the past 2 decades. The results could reveal the research trends and the hotspots in the field and provide helpful information for clinical treatments of cancer.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency affects nearly half the population, with many requiring or opting for supplements with vitamin D3 (VD3), the precursor of vitamin D (1α,25-dihydroxyVD3). 25-HydroxyVD3, the circulating form of vitamin D, is a more effective supplement than VD3 but its synthesis is complex. We report here the engineering of cytochrome P450BM3 (CYP102A1) for the selective oxidation of VD3 to 25-hydroxyVD3. Long-range effects of the substrate-channel mutation Glu435Ile promoted binding of the VD3 side chain close to the heme, enhancing VD3 oxidation activity that reached 6.62 g of 25-hydroxyVD3 isolated from a 1-litre scale reaction (69.1 % yield; space-time-yield 331 mg/L/h).

Abstract
Lung cancer has an unfavorable prognosis with a rate of low overall survival, caused by the difficulty of diagnosis in the early stages and resistance to therapy. In recent years, there have been new therapies that use specific molecular targets and are effective in increasing the survival chances of advanced cancer. Therefore, it is necessary to find more specific biomarkers that can identify early changes in carcinogenesis and allow the earliest possible treatment. Vitamin D (VD) plays an important role in immunity and carcinogenesis. Furthermore, the vitamin D receptor (VDR) regulates the expression of various genes involved in the physiological functions of the human organism. The genes encoding the VDR are extremely polymorphic and vary greatly between human populations. To date, there are significant associations between VDR polymorphism and several types of cancer, but the data on the involvement of VDR polymorphism in lung cancer are still conflicting. Therefore, in this review, our aim was to investigate the relationship between VDR single-nucleotide polymorphisms in humans and the degree of risk for developing lung cancer. The studies showcased different gene polymorphisms to be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer: TaqI, ApaI, BsmI, FokI, and Cdx2. In addition, there is a strong positive correlation between VD deficiency and lung cancer development. Still, due to a lack of awareness, the assessment of VD status and VDR polymorphism is rarely considered for the prediction of lung cancer evolution and their clinical applicability, despite the fact that studies have shown the highest risk for lung cancer given by TaqI gene polymorphisms and that VDR polymorphisms are associated with more aggressive cancer evolution.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone that was initially known only for regulating calcium and phosphorus levels and maintaining bone health. However, it was later discovered that many organs express vitamin D metabolizing enzymes and have a ligand for vitamin D, which regulates the expression of an extensive assortment of genes. As a result, vitamin D is indispensable for the proper function of organs, and its deficiency is believed to be a critical factor in symptoms and disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancers. The significance of vitamin D in reproductive tissues was recognized later, and studies have revealed its crucial role in male and female fertility, as well as proper reproductive function during pregnancy. Vitamin D deficiency has been identified as a risk factor for infertility, gonadal cancers, pregnancy complications, polycystic ovary syndrome, and endometriosis. However, data investigating the association between vitamin D levels and reproductive disorders, including endometriosis, have encountered inconsistencies. Therefore, the present study aims to review existing research on the effect of vitamin D on proper reproductive function, and the role of deficiency in reproductive diseases and specifically focuses on endometriosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether cytochrome P450 24A1 (CYP24A1) polymorphism is associated with cancer susceptibility, the individual study results are still controversial. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive study to identify the association of CYP24A1 polymorphisms (rs4809960, rs6068816, rs2296241, rs4809957, rs2762939) with cancer susceptibility. METHODS Electronic databases including Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase were systematically retrieved for relevant publications. Fixed or random-effect model was selected to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS Eighteen published articles were identified. The results indicated that rs4809960 polymorphism was associated with a decreased cancer risk in Caucasian (TT vs. TC+CC: P=0.035; C vs. T: P=0.016) and Asian population (CC vs. TC+TT: OR P=0.044; TT vs. TC+CC: P=0.021; CC vs. TT: P=0.020; C vs. T: P=0.008) and breast cancer risk (TT vs. TC+CC: P = 0.007; TC vs. TT: P=0.004; C vs. T: P=0.033). A significant association was found between rs2296241 polymorphism and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma risk (AA vs. GG+AG: P = 0.023) and prostate cancer susceptibility (A vs. G: P=0.022). Furthermore, rs4809957 polymorphism was associated with prostate cancer susceptibility in Caucasian (GG vs. GA+AA: P=0.029; GA vs. GG: P=0.022) and breast cancer susceptibility (AA vs. GG+GA: P=0.012; AA vs. GG, P=0.010; A vs. G: P=0.024). Additionally, rs6068816 polymorphism significantly decreased the lung cancer (CC vs. CT+TT: P = 0.016; TT vs. CC: P = 0.044; CT vs. CC: P = 0.036; T vs. C: P = 0.016) and breast cancer risk (TT vs. CC+CT: P = 0.043; TT vs. CC: P = 0.039). No association was found for rs2762939 polymorphism with overall cancer risk. However, for rs2296241, rs4809957, and rs6068816 polymorphisms, there were no significant differences after the Bonferroni correction. CONCLUSION The meta-analysis suggested that rs4809960 was associated with cancer risk and might be a genetic marker for predicting cancer risk. More large-scale and large-sample studies are necessary to further confirm these results.

Abstract
Immunotherapy strategies targeting immune checkpoint molecules such as programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein-4 (CTLA-4) are revolutionizing oncology. However, its effectiveness is limited in part due to the loss of effector cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Interestingly, supplementation of vitamin D could abolish the repressive effect of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) on CD8+ T cells, which might prevent the lymphocytopenia. In addition, vitamin D signaling could contribute to the differentiation of T-regulatory (Treg) cells associated with the expression of Treg markers such as forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) and CTLA-4. Furthermore, vitamin D may be associated with the stimulation of innate immunity. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and estrogen receptor (ESR) signaling, and even the signaling from phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathway could have inhibitory roles in carcinogenesis possibly via the modulation of immune checkpoint molecules. In some cases, certain small molecules including vitamin D could be a novel therapeutic modality with a promising potential for the better performance of immune checkpoint blockade cancer therapies.

Abstract
The role of vitamin D and calcium use in the development of breast cancer among women in the general population is not clear. Furthermore, whether vitamin D and calcium supplement use are associated with breast cancer in high-risk populations has not been evaluated. Thus, we evaluated the association between vitamin D and/or calcium supplement use and breast cancer among women with a pathogenic variant (mutation) in BRCA1 or BRCA2. BRCA mutation carriers enrolled in a longitudinal study were invited to complete a supplemental questionnaire on lifetime supplement use. Cases included women with a prevalent diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, and controls had no history of breast cancer. Vitamin D and calcium use were categorized as never/ever use, and as tertiles of supplement intake (total average daily supplement use). Unconditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of breast cancer. This study included 134 breast cancer cases and 276 controls. Women who used vitamin D-containing supplements had 46% lower odds of having breast cancer compared to those who never used supplements (OR 0.54; 95% CI 0.31, 0.91; p = 0.02). Increasing vitamin D and calcium supplement intake was inversely associated with the odds of having breast cancer (p-trend = 0.04). Findings were suggestively stronger among BRCA1 mutation carriers; however, analyses were limited by small strata. These findings suggest a potential inverse association between vitamin D and calcium supplementation and BRCA breast cancer. Additional studies are warranted to confirm these findings and accurately inform clinical care guidelines.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been correlated with various conditions, including the risk of developing lymphoid malignancies. This systematic review aimed to assess the association between vitamin D levels at diagnosis of lymphoid malignancies, patient outcomes, and survival. A systematic review was conducted, encompassing 15 studies published until January 2023, involving 4503 patients, examining the relationship between vitamin D and lymphoid cancers. The median age of the patients was 56.5 years, with a median follow-up duration of approximately 36 months across studies. The overall median vitamin D level at initial measurement was 20.4 ng/mL, while a <20 ng/mL threshold was used to define vitamin D insufficiency. The results demonstrated significant associations between vitamin D levels and patient outcomes in several lymphoid malignancies, with a pooled risk in disease progression of 1.93 and a pooled hazard ratio of 2.06 for overall survival in patients with 25-(OH)D levels below the normal threshold of 20 ng/mL. Among findings, it was demonstrated that supplemental vitamin D improves the chemosensitivity of tumors by reducing the rate of tumor growth compared with vitamin D or chemotherapy alone. Vitamin D had a protective effect for patients with DLBCL under R-CHOP treatment, while vitamin D insufficiency was associated with the impairment of rituximab treatment and showed worse clinical outcomes in chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) recipients. Although one study found no association between vitamin D deficiency and the cause of death, most associated vitamin D insufficiency with early clinical failure and lower survival probability. In conclusion, his systematic review highlights the importance of vitamin D levels in the prognosis and survival of patients with lymphoid malignancies. Further research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms and explore the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in managing these cancers.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer is most common in Pakistani women at young age compared to West where it is most common after 60 years of age. Variations in genes controlling vitamin D activity would play a role in determining the risk of breast cancer in women at early age. Purpose To determine the association of vitamin D receptors (VDR) gene polymorphisms (FokI) with breast cancer risk in Pakistani women. Methods FokI polymorphisms were studied through the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique on blood samples of 300 breast cancer and 300 healthy women. Results This study found that circulating level of 25(OH)D3 was significantly lower among breast cancer patients as well as healthy subjects. Patients with large tumor size had significantly lower vitamin D levels. VDR FokI genotypes were significantly distributed (P ≤ 0.00001) in Pakistani women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. A significant association between different FokI genotypes and circulating levels of 25(OH)D3 was found. Patients with FF genotype was significantly (P < 0.0001) associated with higher risk of breast cancer (OR 8.9, 95% CI 0.17-0.45) compared to Ff and ff genotype. Conclusion VDR gene FokI polymorphism was associated with plasma vitamin D level and significant differences found in mean serum vitamin D levels between genotype groups of FokI. The study concluded that FokI might be one of the contributors to increase relative risk of breast cancer in Pakistani women.

Abstract
Cancer is an illness characterized by abnormal cell development and the capability to infiltrate or spread to rest of the body. A tumor is the term for this abnormal growth that develops in solid tissues like an organ, muscle, or bone and can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymphatic systems. Nutrition is a critical and immortal environmental component in the development of all living organisms encoding the relationship between a person's nutrition and their genes. Nutrients have the ability to modify gene expression and persuade alterations in DNA and protein molecules which is researched scientifically in nutrigenomics. These interactions have a significant impact on the pharmacokinetic properties of bioactive dietary components as well as their site of action/molecular targets. Nutrigenomics encompasses nutrigenetics, epigenetics, and transcriptomics as well as other "omic" disciplines like proteomics and metabolomics to explain the vast disparities in cancer risk among people with roughly similar life style. Clinical trials and researches have evidenced that alternation of dietary habits is potentially one of the key approaches for reducing cancer risk in an individual. In this article, we will target how nutrigenomics and functional food work as preventive therapy in reducing the risk of cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vitamin D deficiency is a driving force of common cancers like breast cancer. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) can play a tumor suppressor role by helping the precise function of vitamin D in cells such as modulation TGF-β signaling pathway. This study aimed to investigate the association of VDR gene variants and susceptibility to breast cancer in Iranian women. METHODS Genomic DNAs were isolated from blood samples of 161 women with breast cancer and 150 healthy women. After amplification of five positions of VDR gene, the prepared amplicons were digested with TaqI, ApaI, BsmI, Cdx2, and FokI restriction enzymes. RESULTS Subsequently, the digested products were electrophoresed on the 1.5% agarose gel. Odds ratios (ORs) for breast cancer were calculated for genotypes and estimated haplotypes. Binary logistic regression analysis showed FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), and ApaI (rs7975232) polymorphisms had the significant distribution in patients than to the normal group. Analysis of linkage disequilibrium for all pairs of SNPs showed that D'-value between SNP TaqI and SNP BsmI was significantly (p ≤ 0.05). We observed that four major haplotypes of ApaI, BsmI, FokI, Cdx2, and TaqI SNPs significantly were in high frequency than predicted frequency. Among these four haplotypes, CGTAT haplotype was in a higher significant association than others with breast cancer risk (p-value = 0.0001). CONCLUSION Our results showed that FokI, BsmI, and ApaI of VDR polymorphisms associated with the risk of breast cancer in Iranian population.

Abstract
Simple Summary Static electric field (SEF) treatment by high-voltage alternating current is a traditional complementary medicine in Japan. Although it is believed that the SEF-induced electric current serves to regulate cellular or humoral responses in patients, the mechanism for SEF treatment remains poorly understood. There have been very few experimental reports on the biological action with SEF treatment. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of SEF treatment on vitamin D3 (Vit D3)-induced abnormalities in mice. SEF treatment improved the abnormalities in the renal function tests and the imbalance of serum electrolytes. In addition, this treatment remarkably attenuated the Vit D3-induced tissue injuries (severe tissue calcification in the kidneys, hearts, and stomachs). It was likely that the SEF treatment had some favorable effects on the metabolism of calcium. In conclusion, this study provides important evidence that SEF treatment can reduce hypercalcemia and remove calcium deposits from the renal, cardiac, and gastric tissues. SEF treatment is useful in the regulation of disorders caused by an imbalance of serum electrolytes. This study experimentally demonstrates the favorable effects of SEF treatment on Vit D3-induced hypercalcemia. For small animals, the larger the body surface area per body weight becomes, the higher the therapeutic efficacy with SEF treatment. Abstract The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of static electric field (SEF) treatment on vitamin D3 (Vit D3)-induced hypercalcemia and renal calcification in mice. The mice were assigned to three groups: Vit D3-treated mice, mice treated with Vit D3 and SEF (Vit D3 + SEF), and untreated mice. After the administration of Vit D3, the Vit D3 + SEF-treated mice were exposed to SEF treatment by a high-voltage alternating current over five days. Serum biochemical examinations revealed that both the creatinine and blood urea nitrogen concentrations were significantly higher in the Vit D3-treated group. Significantly, decreased Cl concentrations, and increased Ca and inorganic phosphorus concentrations, were found in the Vit D3-treated group. In the Vit D3 + SEF-treated group, these parameters returned to the levels of the untreated group. In the Vit D3-treated group, histopathological examinations showed marked multifocal calcification in the lumens of the renal tubules and the renal parenchyma. The myocardium was replaced by abundant granular mineralization (calcification), with degeneration and necrosis of the calcified fibers. The stomach showed calcification of the cardiac mucosa. SEF treatment remarkably attenuated the Vit D3-induced hypervitaminotic injuries. In conclusion, this study provides important evidence that SEF treatment can reduce hypercalcemia and remove calcium deposits from the renal, cardiac, and gastric tissues. SEF treatment is useful in the regulation of disorders caused by an imbalance of serum electrolytes.

Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT) are the common cancer treatments. In addition to these limitations, the development of adverse effects from chemotherapy and RT reduces the quality of life for cancer patients. Cellular radiosensitivity, or the ability to resist and overcome cell damage caused by ionizing radiation (IR), is directly related to cancer cells' response to RT. Therefore, radiobiological research is emphasizing chemical compounds 'radiosensitization of cancer cells so that they are more reactive in the IR spectrum. Recent years researchers have seen an increase in interest in natural products that have antitumor effects with minimal side effects. Natural products, on the other hand, are easy to recover and therefore less expensive. There have been several scientific studies done based on these compounds that have tested their ability in vitro and in vivo to induce tumor radiosensitization. The role of natural products in RT, as well as their usefulness and potential applications, is the goal of this current review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The epidemiological relationship between vitamin D levels and cancer has been thoroughly investigated. Published data from large studies appear to corroborate a significant relationship between higher serum vitamin D concentrations and improved survival. Mechanistic reviews on commonly-studied cancers - including breast cancer, colon cancer and melanoma - focus predominantly on data from older studies. In outlining avenues for future research, we believe there is utility in summarizing novel findings introduced to the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this narrative review, we used MEDLINE, PUBMED and Cochrane databases to identify mechanistic studies published from January 1, 2015 onwards exploring this topic. RESULTS Twenty-five mechanistic studies were included in this review. It was found that vitamin D plays a critical role in both direct (i.e. tumor gene expression, proliferation, invasiveness, sensitivity to chemotherapy etc.) and indirect (i.e. effects on the tumor microenvironment and immunomodulation) tumor suppression mechanisms. CONCLUSION These newly-identified pathways warrant further research, with the hopes that we may understand how and when vitamin D supplementation can be integrated into precision medicine therapeutics for cancers of the breast, colon and skin. Cancer care providers should consider recommendations to screen for vitamin D deficiency in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Breast cancer represents the second most common female malignancies worldwide and the most common in Egypt. The nuclear vitamin D receptor plays a role in the biology of cancer by affecting inflammatory microenvironment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of VDR and CTLA 4 in invasive duct carcinoma of Egyptian patients. METHODS This is a retrospective study that included 70 invasive duct carcinoma specimens retrieved from the archival material of Pathology Department, Faculty of medicine, Menoufia University, Egypt, spanning the period between January 2010 and December 2017. All cases were stained for VDR and CTLA 4 antibodies. RESULTS There is significant association between high VDR expression in tumor cells and parameters of good prognosis as low tumor stage (T1) and (N0) stage. On the other hand, there is significant association between low CTLA4 tumor expression and good prognostic parameters as low tumor stage (T1) and absent vascular invasion. Regarding lymphocyte expression, there is significant association between positive CTLA4 expression in lymphocytes and parameters of good prognosis as absent metastasis. High VDR tumor expression is the most independent prognostic factor on overall survival of breast carcinoma patients. CONCLUSION high VDR expression in tumor cells is associated with good prognostic parameters and is the most independent prognostic factor on overall survival so it might be of benefit as a target therapy for Egyptian invasive duct carcinoma patients and VDR might augment the expression of CTLA-4, So tailored immunotherapy might have an impact on invasive duct carcinoma patients.<br />.

Abstract
Birth season is an important risk factor for several cancers; for example, anatomic subsite risk factors for gastric cancer differ substantially by when patients were born. In this population-based retrospective study, we explored the relationship between birth season and gastric cancer of different anatomical sites, focusing on gastric cancer patients who were registered at the Beijing Institute for Cancer Research from 2003 to 2012. In total, 19,668 patients were divided into three groups according to the anatomical site of the primary lesion: cardia (n = 3911), noncardia (n = 5383) and unknown (n = 10,374). The 5383 patients in the noncardia group were further subdivided into the following subgroups: fundus (n = 455), corpus (n = 902), greater curvature (n = 110), lesser curvature (n = 512), antrum (n = 2635), pylorus (n = 106) and overlapping (n = 663). Finally, all gastric cancer cases, the three major groups, and the seven noncardia subgroups were, respectively, compared with inpatients from the Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing from 2003 to 2013. A logistic regression method with sex and age as control factors was used to evaluate the relationship between birth season and gastric cancer with the level for statistical significance set at P < .05. Taking winter as the reference season, we found people born in summer had a lower probability of developing gastric cancer (summer: odds ratio [OR] = 0.925, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.875-0.978, P = .006). Among the three groups, the noncardia group had the lower probability of birth season being spring or summer (spring: OR = 0.917, 95% CI = 0.843-0.997, P = .042; summer: OR = 0.883, 95% CI = 0.810-0.962, P = .004), but the cardia and unknown anatomical groups showed no statistical significance for season of birth (P > .05). Among the seven subgroups, those born in summer were less likely to develop gastric cancer in the antrum and lesser curvature than those born in winter (antrum: OR = 0.861, 95% CI = 0.766-0.968, P = .012; lesser curvature: OR = 0.746, 95% CI = 0.579-0.961, P = .023); the other subgroups showed no significant differences by season of birth (P > .05). This study demonstrated that gastric cancer is related to birth season. For people born in summer, the risk of developing gastric cancer was comparatively lower than for people born in winter. Seasonal differences in immune function and maternal nutrition status during pregnancy may explain these findings; however, further large-scale prospective studies will be required to validate these findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we investigated the circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) in Brazilian women with breast cancer in samples collected at diagnosis, and correlated these with clinicopathological parameters relevant to disease prognosis. METHODS This study involved 147 women diagnosed with infiltrative ductal carcinoma whose peripheral blood samples were collected, to have 25(OH)D levels measured in plasma. RESULTS Our findings indicated that circulating 25(OH)D levels at diagnosis were insufficient in patients with breast cancer. Further, 25(OH)D reduced plasmatic levels at diagnosis correlated significantly with poor prognosis parameters, including axillar positivity, chemoresistance and metastasis. Patients bearing triple-negative tumors also presented reduced 25(OH)D in plasma when compared to those who carried Luminal tumors. Our data suggest relevant correlations when 25(OH)D is reduced in plasma at diagnosis, such as advanced disease with axillar positivity, chemoresistance with advanced disease, early age at diagnosis with high histological grade and dead with axilla positivity. CONCLUSIONS Altogether, our findings reinforce that 25(OH)D reduction can be a plausible marker of disease prognosis in breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological diseases of reproductive age, with a prevalence of 5-10% and grave consequences for quality of life and fertility. Vitamin D (vit D), a classic regulator of plasma calcium concentration and skeleton mineralization, is also an effective modulator of the immune system. Several studies suggest that immunologic properties attributed to vit D along with vit D receptor (VDR) expression in reproductive tissues may be involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. OBJECTIVE To systematically review the literature for the association between components of vit D metabolism and endometriosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the literature published in the Medline and Cochrane Central databases was conducted for original research articles on humans, published in any language. RESULTS Twenty-one studies were included in the systematic review. Among them, 12 examined the relationship of endometriosis with vit D metabolites, eight with vit D-binding protein (VDBP), three with VDR polymorphisms, and two with vit D regulatory enzymes. There are discrepancies between the outcomes of the available literature publications. CONCLUSIONS This is a systematic attempt to collect, evaluate, and present the known data on the association between vit D and endometriosis. Given the heterogeneity and the diversity of the present studies, more research is required to elucidate the association between vit D and endometriosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the rate of and risk factors for low pretreatment vitamin D (VitD) levels in postmenopausal breast cancer (BC) women, compared with postmenopausal women without BC. METHODS A cross-sectional clinical study was conducted to compare 209 women with BC (case group) to 418 women without BC (control group), age range: 45 to 75 years. The case group consisted of women diagnosed with BC, amenorrhea ≥12 months, aged ≥45 years, without use of medication or clinical conditions that might interfere with VitD levels. The control group consisted of women with amenorrhea ≥12 months, aged ≥45 years, without BC. The groups were matched for age and time since menopause, at a case: control ratio of 1:2. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH)D] concentration was measured in all women 10 to 20 days after BC diagnosis and before the proposed treatment. Serum levels ≥30 ng/mL were defined as sufficient. The Student's t test or gamma distribution, χ test, and logistic regression (odds ratio, OR) were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The BC group had a higher body mass index (BMI) and higher percentage of obesity than the control group (57.4% vs 40.2%, P < 0.0001). In addition, rates of insufficient (20-29 ng/mL) and deficient (<20 ng/mL) 25(OH)D levels were higher in BC patients than in controls (55.6% vs 49.3%, P = 0.039 and 26.2% vs 20.3%, P = 0.018), respectively. In risk analysis (adjusted for age, time since menopause, and BMI), BC patients had a 1.5-fold higher risk of developing low VitD levels (OR = 1.52, 95% CI, 1.04-2.22, P = 0.029) than women without BC. CONCLUSIONS Postmenopausal women had an increased risk of VitD deficiency at the time of BC diagnosis, associated with a higher rate of obesity, than women of the same age group without cancer.

Abstract
Introduction: Naturally occurring compounds play an essential role in the prevention and treatment of various cancers. There are more than 100 plant and animal based natural compounds currently in clinical use.Areas covered: 1) The importance of natural products combinations in the prevention and treatment of cancer, 2) the need to maximize efficacy while minimizing side effects when using natural product combinations, and 3) specifics related to plant and animal derived natural products, as well as agents derived from natural products. Therapies using natural compounds that have been investigated, their rationale, mechanism of action and findings are reviewed. When the data warrant it, combined interventions that appear to increase efficacy (compared with monotherapy) while minimizing toxicity have been highlighted. Pubmed was used to search for relevant publications.Expert opinion: Combination therapy with natural compounds has the potential to be more effective than single agent therapy. Similar to pharmacologic agents, the goal is to maximize efficacy while mimimizing potential side effects. There is an increasing research focus on the development of agents derived from natural products, with notable successes already achieved from the effort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and associated with significant increase in morbidity and mortality. In recent years, a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression has been shown. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between 25-hydroxy (OH) vitamin D and depression in hemodialysis patients. METHODS A total of 140 patients were included in the study. Hamilton depression scale (HAM-D) was completed by all patients. 25(OH) vitamin D levels were compared between patients with and without depressive symptoms. RESULTS Patients who had depressive symptoms had significantly lower 25(OH) vitamin D levels (13.70 [24.3-8.25] vs. 18.20 [29.2-11.7] ng/mL, p = 0.016). HAM-D score showed significant association with gender (p = 0.011) and 25(OH) vitamin D level (p = 0.011). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that males had lower risk of depression by a ratio of 61.1% (OR 0.389, p = 0.012) and vitamin D-deficient patients had 2.88 times greater risk of depression compared to non-deficient patients (OR 2.885, p = 0.013). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that males had 53.7% less risk of depression (OR 0.463, p = 0.046) and vitamin D-deficient patients had 2.39 times greater risk of depression (OR 2.397, p = 0.047). When evaluated by gender, univariate logistic regression analysis showed that 25(OH) vitamin D and other variables were not associated with depression in females (p > 0.05), while only vitamin D level had a significant effect on depression in males (OR 8.207, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS We found a significant association between vitamin D level and depressive symptoms in hemodialysis patients. When analyzed according to gender, this association was found to stand independent of other variables only in males.

Abstract
Vitamin D and its receptor may play a role in preventing tumor development and progression. As such antineoplastic effects are expected to be weak and to act over long periods, conditions with increased tumor incidence, such as the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), provide suitable study models. We previously found an inverse correlation of serum 25(OH)D concentration with number of neurofibromas in NF1. Here we aim to further explore the role of the vitamin D receptor. A total of 141 adult NF1 patients were included in the study. For 101 of them, serum vitamin 25(OH)D data were available. From 87 patients, blood samples were obtained in PaxGene tubes containing a reagent to stabilize RNA immediately. mRNA of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene (coding for the vitamin D receptor) was measured by means of RT-PCR. Correlation of laboratory data with NF1-related tumors was statistically evaluated. Vitamin D receptor in NF1-tumors was examined by means of immunohistochemistry using an antibody against the vitamin D1 receptor. The number of dermal neurofibromas was significantly inversely correlated with VDR mRNA level and with serum 25(OH)D concentration in NF1 patients. In contrast, plexiform neurofibroma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor did not correlate with these two parameters. Immunostaining did not detect vitamin D receptor in NF1-tumors. Both vitamin D and its receptor may play a role in suppressing the development of neurofibromas. Sustaining 25(OH)D at an adequate level may contribute to controlling neurofibromas and possibly also other tumors. This is especially important for individuals with lower expression of VDR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between vitamin D status, using circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25 (OH) D], and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk in a case-control study, because the association between the two is unclear in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 135 incident RCC cases were matched with 135 controls by age and sex. The blood samples were collected on the first day of hospitalization before surgery to measure plasma 25 (OH) D. Logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confi dence intervals (95% CIs) with adjustment for several confounders (e.g. age, gender, smoking and season of blood draw). Furthermore, the association of RCC with 25 (OH) D in units of 10 ng / mL as a continuous variable were also examined. RESULTS The average plasma 25 (OH) D concentrations in RCC were signifi cantly lower compared with those of the controls (21.5 ± 7.4 ng / mL vs. 24.1 ± 6.6 ng / mL, respectively; P = 0.003). In the adjusted model, inverse associations were observed between circulating 25 (OH) D levels and RCC risk for 25 (OH) D insuffi ciency (20-30 ng / mL) with OR of 0.50 (95% CI: 0.29-0.88; P = 0.015) and a normal 25 (OH) D level (≥ 30 ng / mL) with OR of 0.30 (95% CI: 0.13-0.72; P = 0.007), compared with 25 (OH) D deficiency (< 20 ng / mL). Furthermore, results with 25 (OH) D as a linear variable indicated that each 10 ng / mL increment of plasma 25 (OH) D corresponded to a 12% decrease in RCC risk. CONCLUSIONS This case-control study on a Chinese Han population supports the protective effect of a higher circulating concentration of 25 (OH) against RCC, whether the confounding factors are adjusted or not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D, apart from being an important part of the "calcium-vitamin D-parathyroid hormone" endocrine axis, has diverse range of "non-calcemic" biological actions. A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency has been observed in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) worldwide. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in Nepalese RTRs and interrelations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] and other biochemical parameters. METHODS A total of 80 adult RTRs visiting a university hospital were enrolled in this cross sectional study. Serum 25(OH) D and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) were measured using Enhanced Chemiluminiscent Immunoassay. The RTR population was categorized into recent transplant recipients (≤1 year) and long term recipients (> 1 year). The vitamin D status was defined as per NKF/KDOQI guidelines. SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyze the data. Appropriate statistical tests were applied to compare variables between groups and establish correlation. P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS The mean age of the recipients was 38.11 ± 11.47 years (68 males, 85.0%). Chronic glomerulonephritis was the leading cause of CKD. The two RTR groups (recent and long term) didn't differ in demographic and biochemical characteristics. 83.75% of the recipients had PTH levels above the upper limit of the recommended range for their stage of CKD. 57.5% had hypocalcemia and none of the recipients had hypercalcemia. The median serum 25(OH) D was 24.15 ng/ml (8.00-51.50 ng/ml). Only 27.5% had sufficient vitamin D status whereas 53.8% were vitamin D insufficient and 18.8% were vitamin D deficient, the distribution almost comparable in the 2 transplant group. The serum 25(OH) D was not significantly affected by the time post-transplant, gender and sunlight avoidance. There was a significant negative correlation between serum 25(OH) D and iPTH (Pearson's r = - 0.35, P = 0.001), but not so with the graft function. CONCLUSION There is a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in RTRs. The deficiency status is not corrected despite of nutritional improvement and normalization of GFR post-transplantation and likely exacerbates secondary hyperparathyroidism. Vitamin D supplementation coupled with sensible sun exposure could be important strategies in optimization of the vitamin D status in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE The vitamin D receptor (VDR) endocrine system has emerged as an endogenous pleiotropic biological cell regulator with anti-neoplastic effects on breast, colorectal, and prostatic adenocarcinomas. We studied the association of gene expression, polymorphisms of VDR, CYP27B1, and CYP24A1 genes and serum vitamin D levels as surrogate markers of disease progression in patients with acid reflux, Barrett's esophagus (BE), or esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). METHODS We analyzed blood and tissue samples from patients with biopsy-confirmed BE or EAC for vitamin D levels, gene expressions, and polymorphisms in VDR (FokI [F/f], BsmI [B/b], ApaI [A/a], and TaqI [T/t]), CYP27B1 (HinfI [H/h]), and CYP24A1 (Hpy1881 [Y/y]). Percentages of homozygous dominant/recessive or heterozygous traits were assessed for each polymorphism in all patient subgroups. RESULTS Genomic Bb and FF polymorphisms were highly prevalent in EAC patients, whereas BE patients had a high prevalence of wild-type Hpy1881 (YY polymorphism). Some polymorphisms (Yy for CYP24A1, bb for VDR) were noted only in EAC patients. Yy and bb forms were both uniquely present in some EAC patients without associated Barrett's lesions, but not in patients with concomitant BE. AA and bb polymorphisms were associated with decreased response to neoadjuvant therapy. A high level of VDR and CYP24A1 mRNA expression was observed in EAC tissue of non-responders. Serum vitamin D deficiency was common in EAC patients. CONCLUSIONS Specific polymorphisms in vitamin D metabolism-related genes are associated with the likelihood of reflux-BE-EAC progression. Identifying such polymorphisms may aid in development of better surveillance and diagnostic and therapeutic protocols.

Abstract
The incidence and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency are increasing worldwide. It is estimated that over 50% of the world's population have low vitamin D (i.e., hypovitaminosis D; serum levels below 30 ng/mL). In vitamin D inadequacy, human physiological systems work inefficiently. In humans, 80% of the vitamin D is synthesized in the presence of ultraviolet rays from sunlight; for the rest, we rely on diet and nowadays, supplements. The latter becomes important when one is exposed to less than optimal amounts of sunlight, inability to generate vitamin D in the skin efficiently, and/or having conditions that lead to decreased intestinal absorption or increased catabolism of vitamin D. The normal serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level is around 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) and the optimal range is between 30 and 60 ng/mL (75-150 nmol/L). In 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggested that 600IU of vitamin D is adequate for people below age 71 who are not exposed to sunshine. Although this might be relevant to the ambulatory healthy white Caucasians to achieve serum 25(OH)D level of 20 ng/mL, but it is insufficient for other ethnic groups. Moreover, the IOM recommendations are not suitable for those who live outside North America. Vitamin D requirements are higher during adolescence, pregnancy and lactation, and in many other disease conditions. Most clinicians consider 30 ng/mL as the minimum serum level of 25(OH)D necessary to maintain good health. In the absence of sunlight exposure and with daily oral intake of 600IU vitamin D, very few people would reach serum 25(OH)D level above 30 ng/mL. While an additional daily intake of 1000IU of vitamin D are required for people with lighter-skin color, those with darker complexion and the elderly, require a minimum of 2000IU/day to maintain serum 25(OH)D levels over 30 ng/mL; 5000 IU/day supplement is considered as the safe daily upper limit of supplementation. Vulnerable groups such as the disabled and/or house-bound, obese, with gastrointestinal abnormalities and/or malabsorption syndromes, institutionalized people (e.g., nursing homes, prisons, etc.), and pregnant and lactating women need approximately 4000IU per day for optimal physiological activity. Vitamin D is essential for gastrointestinal calcium absorption, mineralization of osteoid tissue and maintenance of serum ionized calcium level. It is also important for other physiological functions, such as muscle strength, neuromuscular coordination, hormone release, subduing autoimmunity, and curtailing the development of certain cancers.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. It is a multifactorial disease, and no single agent has been identified so far as the sole cause of the cancer. Many factors like smoking, the consumption of alcohol, fungal-contaminated, spicy and various nitrosamine-containing food stuffs and hot beverages, nutritional deficiency of some vitamins like β-carotene, vitamin A, C and E and minerals like zinc, selenium and molybdenum, the use of opium, HPV infection and various genetic factors have been found associated with the occurrence of the disease worldwide. Wide geographic differences and substantial changes in the incidence of esophageal cancer occurring over time have been suggested. Among the risk factors in India, betel quid chewing carries a relatively high risk. High incidences in Kashmir have been associated with the consumption of hot salted tea, sun-dried, smoked foods, tobacco in the form of hukka and various genetic factors. The exact cause of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is unknown. Much work has been carried out on the role of various environmental factors, gene mutations, and polymorphisms worldwide, including Kashmir. Although the Kashmir valley is present on the border of the ‘high risk esophageal cancer belt’ and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma represents the most commonly occurring malignancy in Kashmir, the amount of information available on various associated factors is still very little as there is a paucity of various epidemiological and molecular studies being carried out in this field.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between pretreatment vitamin D (VD) deficiency with breast cancer prognostic features in Brazilian postmenopausal women. An analytical cross sectional study was conducted with 192 women, aged 45-75 years, attended at University Hospital. Women with recent diagnosis of breast cancer, in amenorrhea >12months and age ≥45 years, without medication use or clinical conditions that interfere with VD values were included. Clinical and anthropometric data were collected. Serum level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was measured in all patients until 20days after breast cancer diagnosis, and was classified as normal (≥30ng/mL), insufficiency (20-29ng/mL) and deficiency (<20ng/mL). Data on breast cancer (histopathological type, grade, tumor stage, lymph node status), hormone status (estrogen receptor, ER, progesterone receptor, PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) and epithelial proliferative activity (Ki-67) were collected. For statistical analysis, the t-student test, the Gamma Distribution (asymmetric variables), the chi-square test and the logistic regression (OR-odds ratio) were used. The median 25(OH)D level was 25.8ng/mL (range 12.0-59.2ng/mL). Sufficient vitamin D levels were detected in 65 patients (33.9%), whereas insufficient levels in 92 patients (47.9%), and deficient levels in 35 patients (18.2%). Participants with insufficient and deficient 25(OH)D levels had a higher proportion of tumors with a high grade and locally advanced and metastatic disease, more positive lymph node, a lower proportion of ER, PR positives tumors and higher Ki-67(p<0.05). Patients with normal vitamin D had a higher frequency of luminal A (47.7%) and luminal B (32.2%) tumors when compared to patients with vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Furthermore, all cases of triple negative were detected in women with low VD levels. Multivariate analysis, after adjusting for age, time since menopause and BMI, showed that insufficient and deficient level of vitamin D were significantly associated with negative estrogen receptor (OR 3.77 CI 95% 1.76-8.09 and OR 3.99 CI 95% 1.83-8.68), high Ki-67 (OR 2.50, CI 95% 1.35-4.63, and OR 2.62, CI 95% 1.40-4.98), and positive axillary lymph node status (OR 1.59, CI 95% 1.03-2.33, and OR 1.58, CI 95% 1.02-2.92) respectively. In Brazilian postmenopausal women with breast cancer, there was an association between vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency and tumors with worse prognostic features. Low vitamin D levels were shown to be a risk factor for ER negative tumors, with positive axilla and a higher rate of cell proliferation.

Abstract
Calcitriol, also known as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2VD3), is a biologically active form of vitamin D and has a wide range of anticancer activity against various cancer cell lines. However, the mechanism of calcitriol remains to be further studied. In this study, the biological effect and epigenetic regulation of calcitriol on kidney cancer cells were investigated. Calcitriol can significantly inhibit cell proliferation of kidney cancer cell lines 786-O (P<0.05). Calcitriol also induced cell apoptosis and senescence of 786-O and ACHN (P<0.05). Calcitriol can increase the expression of histone demethylase JMJD3 and cell senescence marker p16INK4A (P<0.05). Knockdown of JMJD3 decreased p16INK4A upregulation after calcitriol treatment (P<0.05), and also reduced calcitriol-induced cell senescence (P<0.05). This study reveals a new mechanism of anticancer activity of calcitriol by showing that histone demethylase JMJD3 induced by calcitriol increases p16INK4A expression and cell senescence. Therefore, these results provide new strategy for treatment and prevention of kidney cancer.

Abstract
The prevalence of low vitamin D status in the elderly population of subtropical area and the potential risk/protective factors have not been addressed. This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, which collected demographic/anthropometric data and information on diet habit and sun exposure, recruited 170 subjects with mean age 70.9±5.6 in rural areas of southern Taiwan. Serum 25-OH vitamin D, calcium, and intact parathyroid hormone were also measured. Using cut-off level of 30 ng/mL, subjects were divided into low (n = 95) and normal (n = 75) serum vitamin D groups. The results demonstrated a low vitamin D status in 30.6% of men and 57.7% of women. Dietary vitamin D intake was another factor associated with vitamin D status (p = 0.02). Logistic regression identified inadequate intake of vitamin D-rich food as the only risk factor for low vitamin D status in men (OR = 4.55, p = 0.01), whereas inadequate sun exposure was the only predictable risk with dose-response relationship in women (low vs. high sun exposure, OR = 6.84, p = 0.018; moderate vs. high sun exposure, OR = 6.67, p = 0.005). In conclusion, low vitamin D status was common in the elderly of subtropical rural areas. Low sun exposure and inadequate dietary vitamin D consumption were associated with a low vitamin D status in females and males, respectively.

Abstract
In this meta-analysis, we analyzed the association between vitamin D levels and lung carcinoma risk and outcomes. Two authors independently searched the Web of Science, Pubmed, EBSCO and Ovid MEDLINE resources with the key words “vitamin D, lung cancer, solar and latitude” and enrolled 22 studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria. The summary odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the random (or fixed)-effects model. Potential confounders were carefully adjusted. High vitamin D (or calcium) intake and serum 25(OH)D levels each correlated inversely with lung cancer risk [OR = 0.72 (95% CI: 0.61–0.85, p < 0.001) and OR = 0.89 (95% CI: 0.83–0.97, p < 0.05)]. High circulating 25(OH)D levels also reduced lung cancer mortality with the pooled OR reached 0.39 (95% CI: 0.28–0.54, p < 0.001)]. A positive trend was presented in the relationship between serum 25(OH) D and survival (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.87–1.18, p = 0.87). Subgroup analysis revealed that nonsmokers had higher vitamin D levels, which correlated negatively with lung cancer risk (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.65–0.88, p < 0.01). Moreover, lower sun exposure and high latitude associated with lower vitamin D levels. This meta-analysis shows that high vitamin D (or calcium) intake and serum 25(OH)D levels correlate with lower lung cancer risk and better prognosis. UVB and latitude may play a vital role in lung cancer occurrence and progression, although a direct evidence hasn't been obtained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS There may be an association between vitamin D levels and allograft outcomes in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). However, few studies have been conducted to determine the association between vitamin D levels and post-transplant infections. This study investigated the impact of vitamin D deficiency on the risk of infection after kidney transplantation. METHODS We measured 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels prior to kidney transplantation. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a serum 25(OH)D level < 20 ng/mL. We examined the incidence of various post-transplant infections during follow-up period. We used Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to determine factors associated with increased risk of post-transplant infections during the follow-up period. RESULTS A total of 164 KTRs were followed up for a mean of 24.8 ± 10.7 months. Among them, 135 patients (82.3%) had vitamin D deficiency. Patients with vitamin D deficiency had a significantly higher incidence of urinary tract infection (p = 0.027) and any bacterial infection (p = 0.010) compared to those without vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency was not significantly associated with incidence of viral or fungal infections. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that vitamin D deficiency (hazard ratio, 11.07; 95% confidence interval, 1.46 to 84.03; p = 0.020) was independent risk factor for post-transplant bacterial infections. CONCLUSIONS Pre-transplant vitamin D deficiency was a significant risk factor for bacterial infections after kidney transplantation. Further studies are needed on possible benefits of vitamin D supplementation for preventing post-transplant bacterial infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Previous studies have suggested that elevated serum vitamin D levels might protect against thyroid cancer. Elevated serum thyroid stimulating hormone levels and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) are suggested to be thyroid cancer promoting factors but have not been well controlled in previous studies. We designed the present study to evaluate whether serum vitamin D levels are associated with thyroid cancer in euthyroid patients with no clinical evidence of AITD. METHODS This cross-sectional study included subjects who underwent routine health check-ups, including serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab), and thyroid ultrasonography (US). Inclusion criteria were euthyroid, negative TPO-Ab, and no evidence of AITD by US findings. Thyroid cancer diagnoses were based on fine needle aspiration cytology and/or postsurgical histopathological findings. RESULTS We enrolled 5,186 subjects (64% male, 37% female) in this study, including 53 patients (1%) with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer (33 males, 20 females). Mean 25(OH)D3 levels were similar between the thyroid cancer and control groups (p = 0.20). Subgroup analysis according to sex or seasonal variation also revealed no differences in 25(OH)D3 levels between the two groups. Based on the levels of 25(OH)D3, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of thyroid cancer; the prevalence was 0.71%, 0.94%, 1.40%, and 0.82% in the deficient, insufficient, sufficient, and excess groups, respectively (p = 0.64). CONCLUSIONS The levels of serum 25(OH)D3 are not associated with thyroid cancer prevalence in euthyroid subjects with no clinical evidence of AITD.

Abstract
Purpose: To explore strategies for disseminating online information about vitamin D to young adults. Methods: Participants were 50 males and females aged 18–25 years, living in Ontario, Canada. Eight focus groups (4 male; 4 female) were conducted; participants also completed a socio-demographic questionnaire. Audio files were transcribed verbatim; thematic analysis was used to identify key themes. Results: Thematic analysis revealed that an effective educational intervention geared towards this population should be simple, brief, interesting, personally relevant, credible, and include incentives. Conclusions: Feedback regarding intervention methodology could be used to inform interventions aiming to increase intake of vitamin D or other nutrients among young adults.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a highly prevalent worldwide condition and affects people of all ages. The most important role of vitamin D is the regulation of intestinal calcium absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus to maintain muscle and bone homeostasis. Furthermore, in recent years it has been discovered that the vitamin D receptor (VDR) is widely distributed in many organs and tissues where vitamin D can perform other actions that include the modulation of the immune response, insulin secretion, anti-proliferative effect on cells of vascular smooth muscle, modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and regulates cell growth in several organs. The VDR is widely distributed in the male reproductive system. Vitamin D induces changes in the spermatozoa's calcium and cholesterol content and in protein phosphorylation to tyrosine/threonine residues. These changes could be involved in sperm capacitation. Vitamin D seems to regulate aromatase expression in different tissues. Studies analyzing seasonal variations of sex steroids in male populations yield conflicting results. This is probably due to the wide heterogeneity of the populations included according to age, systemic diseases and obesity.

Abstract
Calcitriol (1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) has demonstrated anticancer activity against several tumors. However, the underlying mechanism for this activity is not yet fully understood. Our experiment was designed and performed to address one aspect of this issue in cervical cancer. HeLa S3 cells were cultured in media with various concentrations of calcitriol. Cell proliferation and cell cycle were assessed by spectrophotometry and flow cytometry, respectively. The mRNA and protein expression levels of human cervical cancer oncogene (HCCR-1) and p21 were determined by RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. Results indicated that calcitriol inhibited HeLa S3 cell proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase. Calcitriol decreased HCCR-1 protein expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, promoter activity analyses revealed that transcriptional regulation was involved in the inhibition of HCCR-1 expression. Overexpression of HCCR-1 in HeLa S3 cells reversed the inhibition of cell proliferation and G1 phase arrest that resulted from calcitriol treatment. In addition, calcitriol increased p21 expression and promoter activity. HCCR-1 overexpression decreased p21 expression and promoter activity. Thus, our results suggested that calcitriol inhibited HeLa S3 cell proliferation by decreasing HCCR-1 expression and increasing p21 expression.

Abstract
Vitamin D has been associated with reduced risk of many cancers, but evidence for esophageal cancer is mixed. To clarify the role of vitamin D, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association of vitamin D exposures and esophageal neoplasia, including adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), Barrett's esophagus, and squamous dysplasia. Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to September 2015. Fifteen publications in relation to circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D; n = 3], vitamin D intake (n = 4), UVB exposure (n = 1), and genetic factors (n = 7) were retrieved. Higher [25(OH)D] was associated with increased risk of cancer [adenocarcinoma or SCC, OR = 1.39; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04-1.74], with the majority of participants coming from China. No association was observed between vitamin D intake and risk of cancer overall (OR, 1.03; 0.65-1.42); however, a nonsignificantly increased risk for adenocarcinoma (OR, 1.45; 0.65-2.24) and nonsignificantly decreased risk for SCC (OR, 0.80; 0.48-1.12) were observed. One study reported a decreased risk of adenocarcinoma with higher UVB exposure. A decreased risk was found for VDR haplotype rs2238135(G)/rs1989969(T) carriers (OR, 0.45; 0.00-0.91), and a suggestive association was observed for rs2107301. In conclusion, no consistent associations were observed between vitamin D exposures and occurrence of esophageal lesions. Abstract
PURPOSE The aetiology of osteochondritis dissecans is still unclear. The aim of this prospective pilot study was to analyse whether vitamin D insufficiency, or deficiency, might be a contributing etiological factor in the development of an OCD lesion. METHODS The serum level of vitamin D3 in 23 consecutive patients (12 male and 11 female) suffering from a stage III, or stages III and IV, OCD lesion (mostly stage III) admitted for surgery was measured. RESULTS The patients' mean age was 31.3 years and most of them already exhibited closed epiphyseal plates. In the majority of patients (18/23), a distinct vitamin D3 deficiency was found, two patients were vitamin D3-insufficient and, in three patients, the vitamin D3 level reached the lowest normal value. CONCLUSION These first data show that a vitamin D3 deficiency rather than an insufficiency may be involved in the development of OCD lesions. Probably, with a vitamin D3 substitution, the development of an advanced OCD stage could be avoided. Further analyses, including morphological analyses regarding a possible osteomalacia, and examination of the PTH and other determinants of the bone metabolism, should be undertaken to either confirm or refute these data. Abstract
CONTEXT Breast cancer has been considered as one of the most common types of cancer among the women worldwide, and patients with breast neoplasms have been reported with high prevalence of low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to evaluate the correlation of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency with breast neoplasms risk among women. DATA SOURCES PubMed database was searched with MeSH (medical subject headings) keywords "vitamin D AND breast neoplasms" which was restricted by original articles written only in English and published from January 1, 2014. STUDY SELECTION To find the articles that met eligibility criteria, titles and abstracts were examined. DATA EXTRACTION This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses) statement. Critical appraising of evidence was performed, using the study quality assessment tools of national institutes of health, national heart, lung and blood institute (NHLBI). RESULTS Overall, 76 potential articles were identified and after screening, 13 articles met eligible criteria for inclusion. Definition of low vitamin D levels varied greatly among studies, making comparisons difficult, but most of them have defined deficiency as 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. Evidence was mainly of fair quality. CONCLUSIONS This study has provided evidence that vitamin D deficiency has been very prevalent in patients with breast neoplasms, more than comparable matched control population, and risk of breast cancer has increased with low vitamin D levels, suggesting the need for high quality studies that assessed the health consequences attributable to vitamin D deficiency employing standard definitions.

Abstract
A population-based relationship between low vitamin D status and increased cancer risk is now generally accepted. However there were only few studies reported on prognostic impact. To determine the effect of low vitamin D on progression of breast cancer, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of vitamin D levels and clinico- pathological characteristics in 200 cases of breast cancer diagnosed during 2011-2012 at the National Cancer Institute of Thailand. Vitamin D levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Clinical and pathological data were accessed to examine prognostic effects of vitamin D. We found that the mean vitamin D level was 23.0±6.61 ng/ml. High vitamin D levels (≥32 ng/ml) were detected in 7% of patients, . low levels (<32 ng/ml) in 93% Mean vitamin D levels for stages 1-4 were 26.1±6.35, 22.3±6.34, 22.2±6.46 and 21.3±5.42 ng/ml respectively (P=0.016) and 24.1 and 21.3 ng/ml for lymph node negative and positive cases (P=0.006). Low vitamin D level (<32 ng/ml) was significantly found in majority of cases with advanced stage of the disease (P=0.036), positive node involvement (P=0.030) and large tumors (P=0.038). Our findings suggest that low and decreased level of vitamin D might correlate with progression and metastasis of breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum vitamin D status can affect the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Our aim was to determine the association between alterations in the 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status during follow-up and the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Additionally, we evaluated the association between the 25(OH)D status at the time of diagnosis and the prognosis using a detailed age and stage categorization. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four hundred and sixty-nine Korean breast cancer patients were included. We collected patient clinicopathological data, including their serum 25(OH)D concentration at diagnosis and at the annual follow- up until 4 years after diagnosis. The patients were divided according to their 25(OH)D status at diagnosis into a deficient (<20 ng/ml) and a non-deficient (≥20 ng/ml) group. At follow-up, patients were categorized into the four following groups according to 25(OH)D status alterations: persistently deficient, improved, deteriorated and persistently non-deficient. RESULTS At diagnosis, 118 patients were classified into the deficient group and 351 into the non-deficient group. After a median follow-up period of 85.8±31.0 months, the patients with advanced- stage disease or an older age in the non-deficient group showed a significantly better survival compared with the deficient group. Furthermore, at the 1-year follow-up of 25(OH)D status, the persistently non-deficient group and the improved group had better survival compared with the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that maintaining an optimal 25(OH)D status at diagnosis and during the 1-year follow-up period is important for improving breast cancer patient survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that fish is the major natural source of vitamin D in the diet; therefore, this meta-analysis investigated the influence of fish consumption in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations. OBJECTIVE A literature search was carried out in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (up to February 2014) for RCTs that investigated the effect of fish consumption on 25(OH)D concentrations in comparison to other dietary interventions. RESULTS Seven articles and 2 unpublished study data sets with 640 subjects and 14 study groups met the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with controls, the consumption of fish increased 25(OH)D concentrations, on average, by 4.4 nmol/L (95% CI: 1.7, 7.1 nmol/L; P < 0.0001, I(2) = 25%; 9 studies).The type of the fish also played a key role: the consumption of fatty fish resulted in a mean difference of 6.8 nmol/L (95% CI: 3.7, 9.9 nmol/L; P < 0.0001, I(2) = 0%; 7 study groups), whereas for lean fish the mean difference was 1.9 nmol/L (95% CI: -2.3, 6.0 nmol/L; P < 0.38, I(2) = 37%; 7 study groups). Short-term studies (4-8 wk) showed a mean difference of 3.8 nmol/L (95% CI: 0.6, 6.9 nmol/L; P < 0.02, I(2) = 38%; 10 study groups), whereas in long-term studies (∼6 mo) the mean difference was 8.3 nmol/L (95% CI: 2.1, 14.5 nmol/L; P < 0.009, I(2) = 0%; 4 study groups). CONCLUSION As the major food source of vitamin D, fish consumption increases concentrations of 25(OH)D, although recommended fish intakes cannot optimize vitamin D status.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to examine vitamin D in the context of sport nutrition and its potential role in optimizing athletic performance. Vitamin D receptors (VDR) and vitamin D response elements (VDREs) are located in almost every tissue within the human body including skeletal muscle. The hormonally-active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, has been shown to play critical roles in the human body and regulates over 900 gene variants. Based on the literature presented, it is plausible that vitamin D levels above the normal reference range (up to 100 nmol/L) might increase skeletal muscle function, decrease recovery time from training, increase both force and power production, and increase testosterone production, each of which could potentiate athletic performance. Therefore, maintaining higher levels of vitamin D could prove beneficial for athletic performance. Despite this situation, large portions of athletic populations are vitamin D deficient. Currently, the research is inconclusive with regards to the optimal intake of vitamin D, the specific forms of vitamin D one should ingest, and the distinct nutrient-nutrient interactions of vitamin D with vitamin K that affect arterial calcification and hypervitaminosis. Furthermore, it is possible that dosages exceeding the recommendations for vitamin D (i.e. dosages up to 4000-5000 IU/day), in combination with 50 to 1000 mcg/day of vitamin K1 and K2 could aid athletic performance. This review will investigate these topics, and specifically their relevance to athletic performance.

Abstract
Micronutrient deficiency is common in patients with HIV/AIDS, usually caused by mal-absorption and/or drug interactions. 25-hydroxyvitamin D is of fundamental importance for the homeostasis of musculoskeletal health. The current study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of HIV-infected subjects in order to make their nutritional diagnoses, including their vitamin D blood levels, and to estimate their consumption of vitamin D. The study included 98 HIV-1-infected subjects, followed at University of São Paulo Medical School - HC-FMUSP. We performed a nutritional evaluation, along with the determination of patients’ serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium concentration, biochemical analyses, and an anthropometric assessment. In the medical interview a 24-hour food recall was used (R24) to estimate daily calorie intake, macronutrients, calcium, and vitamin D. A high level of vitamin D deficiency was observed in our patients: 83.4% of them had levels below 30 ng/ml; they also presented an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, along with a high consumption of dietary fat. Factors related to the virus itself and to the use of antiretroviral drugs may have contributed for the low vitamin D levels seen in our HIV-1-infected patients.

Abstract
Accumulated data supports the argument that vitamin D possesses several biological and molecular actions apart from its role in calcium absorption and facilitation of gene expression. Vitamin D deficiency has been an associated risk factor for cardiovascular disease,metabolic syndrome and ocular complications. The aim of this review is to summarise the most relevant data regarding these associations and to try to clarify whether, and to what extent, oral vitamin D supplementation could be used as a beneficial intervention in such diseases.Vitamin D is produced in skin exposed to sunlight UVB radiation and is then metabolised by the kidney into calciferol, which is an active form. The main function of vitamin D is to promote calcium and phosphorus absorption, and studies have shown that a lack of itplays an important role in ocular conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D may protect the diabetic retina; however, other vitamin D-associated conditions (diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases) may result in secondary ocular manifestations and the potential forsight-threatening complications. The purpose of this review is to describe the current literature on the role of vitamin D in ocular and systemic wellness. However, more research is needed to determine if increasing levels of this vitamin can assist in preventing age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Since vitamin D is a circulating steroid hormone, its receptors are found in almost every cell in the human body, and this suggests that vitamin D might have a very broad role for overall health. However, there is still demand for further research to clarify the clinical use of vitamin D in the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases.
