Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of preoperative multimedia educational sessions on the levels of anxiety and satisfaction among women undergoing cesarean section (CS). The Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane databases were searched without language limitations for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from their inception up to October 15, 2023. A random-effect meta-analysis was conducted, and the quality of this meta-analysis was evaluated using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach. Seven RCTs (n = 1006 women) met the inclusion criteria. Preoperative multimedia sessions were found to significantly reduce anxiety levels (n = 6 RCTs, weighted mean difference: -3.10; 95 percent confidence intervals (CI): -4.48, -1.73; I2 = 44.24 percent, moderate certainty of evidence) compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding women's satisfaction after surgery (n = 5 RCTs, risk ratio: 1.37; 95 percent CI: 0.76, 2.50; I2 = 98.26 percent, moderate certainty of evidence). Leave-one-out sensitivity analysis showed robustness of the outcomes. The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that providing multimedia educational programs before surgery could potentially have a beneficial effect on the levels of anxiety experienced by women undergoing CS. However, it is imperative to validate these results through larger samples and multi-centered RCTs.

Abstract
Background There is a lack of evidence-based app guidance for parents of children with crying, sleeping, and feeding problems who are often highly burdened and not likely to seek professional help. A new psychoeducational app for parents providing scientifically sound information via text and videos, a diary function, selfcare strategies, a chat forum and a regional directory of specialized counseling centers may serve as a low-threshold intervention for this target group. Objective We investigated how parents perceived the app in terms of the following: (1) overall impression and usability, (2) feedback on specific app functions regarding usefulness and (3) possible future improvements. Methods Our clinical sample of N = 137 parents of children aged from 0 to 24 months was recruited from a cry baby outpatient clinic in Southern Germany between 2019 and 2022. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used to collect and analyse cross-sectional data on app evaluation. After app use within the framework of a clinical trial, parents filled in an app evaluation questionnaire. Results Most participants used the app at least once a week (86, 62.8 %) over an average period of 19.06 days (SD = 15.00). Participants rated overall impression and usability as good, and the informational texts, expert videos and regional register of counseling centers as appealing and useful. The diary function and chat forum were found to be helpful in theory, but improvements in implementation were requested, such as a timer function for the diary entry. Regarding future functionality, parents posed several suggestions such as the option to contact counseling centers directly via app, and the inclusion of the profile of their partners. Conclusions Positive ratings of overall impression, usability, and specific app functions are important prerequisites for the app to be effective. App-based guidance for this target group should include easy-to-use information. The app is intended to serve as a secondary preventive low-threshold offer and to complement professional counseling.

Abstract
Many women leaving jails are ill-prepared to follow recommended COVID-19 mitigation practices, including testing and vaccination. Low COVID-19-related health literacy, exposure to disinformation, and mistrust in authorities put women at increased risk. Research on this population has shown significant use of mobile devices for communication and web access and public Wi-fi for the internet. Using inductive (formative empirical research with the community) and deductive (theory-based) practices, we designed, developed, and pilot-tested a multimedia, culturally tailored web-based electronic health (eHealth) application to increase COVID-19-specific health literacy and promote testing and vaccination among women with criminal and legal system involvement (CLSI). The intervention included a serialized animated multimedia component and a telenovela-style series, complementing each other and addressing knowledge needs identified in the formative research phase of the project. The eHealth intervention was pilot-tested with 13 CLSI women by using online activity logs and semi-structured telephone interviews. Findings confirmed that eHealth interventions employing multimodal information delivery had increased chances of engaging audiences, especially when developed with input from the target population and are culturally tailored. In addition, using a web-based delivery optimized for mobile made the intervention accessible on various devices and decreased the risk of technical problems.

Abstract
Objective Advancements in diagnostics and treatment options for cardiac amyloidosis have improved patient outcomes, yet few patient education materials exist to help patients understand the disease and diagnosis process. We sought to develop and evaluate a set of plain language, patient-centered infographics describing the condition and common diagnostic tests. Methods Using health literacy best practices, we developed 7 infographics which were further revised based on multilevel stakeholder feedback. To evaluate the materials, we recruited 100 patients from healthcare settings in Chicago, IL; participants completed a web-assisted interview during which they were randomized 1:1 to first view either our infographics or a standard material. Participants completed a knowledge assessment on their assigned material and subsequently reported impressions of both materials. Results No differences were found between study arms in knowledge. The infographics took significantly less time to read and were more highly rated by participants in terms of appearance and understandability. Over two-thirds of participants preferred the infographics to the standard. Conclusions The infographics created may improve the learning process about a complex condition and diagnosis process unknown to most adults. Innovation These infographics are the first of their kind for cardiac amyloidosis and were created using health literacy best practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Educating patients undergoing surgery for LDH is important to maintain the proper performance of body mechanics. PURPOSE The study compared the effects of standard, brochure-based, and video-based education on postoperative pain, disability, and the quality of life in patients undergoing surgery for lumbar disc herniation. DESIGN This was a randomized controlled study. SETTINGS The study was conducted in the Department of Neurosurgery of a training and research hospital in Turkey. PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS Sixty patients (n = 20 control, n = 20 video, n = 20 brochure) undergoing surgery for LDH who volunteered to participate. METHODS The study was carried out between 15 January and 30 July 2017. The data were collected preoperatively and postoperatively using the Patients' Characteristics Form, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Physical Functioning and Bodily Pain subscales of the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36) and the Survey of Patient Satisfaction with Clinical Education and Materials. RESULTS All three groups were similar in terms of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. Preoperative scores obtained from the ODI, SF-MPQ, and the two subscales of the SF-36 were not significantly different. However, there was a statistically significant difference between the video group (81.5 ± 24.3) and the control group (67.7 ± 18.6) in terms of the Physical Functioning subscale of the SF-36 in the postoperative period (p< .05). CONCLUSIONS Preoperative education on body mechanics increases the physical functioning of patients with LDH and facilitates the integration of information into their daily activities.

Abstract
Background The information provided to potential trial participants plays a crucial role in their decision-making. Printed participant information sheets for trials have received recurrent criticism as being too long and technical, unappealing and hard to navigate. An alternative is to provide information through multimedia (text, animations, video, audio, diagrams and photos). However, there is limited evidence on the effects of multimedia participant information on research recruitment rates, particularly in children and young people. Objectives The study objectives were as follows: 1. to develop template multimedia information resources through participatory design, for use when recruiting children and young people to trials 2. to evaluate the multimedia information resources in a series of Studies Within A Trial, to test their effects on recruitment and retention rates, and participant decision-making, by comparing the provision of multimedia information resources instead of printed participant information sheets, and comparing the provision of multimedia information resources in addition to printed participant information sheets. Design Two-phase study: 1. multimedia information resources development including qualitative study; user testing study; readability metrics; enhanced patient and public involvement 2. multimedia information resources' evaluation comprising Studies Within A Trial undertaken within host trials recruiting children and young people. Setting United Kingdom trials involving patients aged under 18. Participants Development phase: n = 120 (children and young people, parents, clinicians, trial personnel). Evaluation phase: n = 1906 (children and young people being asked to take part in trials). Interventions Multimedia information resources (comprising text, audio, 'talking heads' video, trial-specific and trial-generic animations). Printed participant information sheets. Main outcome measures Primary outcome: trial recruitment rate comparing multimedia information resource-only with printed participant information sheet-only provision. Secondary outcomes: trial recruitment rate comparing combined multimedia information resource and printed participant information sheet with printed participant information sheet-only provision; trial retention rate; quality of participant decision-making. Results for each trial were calculated and combined in a two-stage random-effects meta-analysis. Results Phase 1 generated two multimedia information resource templates: (1) for children aged 6-11 years; (2) for children aged 12-18 years and parents. In the Phase 2 Studies Within A Trial the multimedia information resources improved trial recruitment, when compared to printed information alone [odds ratio (OR) = 1.54; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05 to 2.28; p = 0.03; I2 = 0%]. When printed participant information sheet-only provision was compared to combined multimedia information resource and printed participant information sheet provision, there was no effect on trial recruitment (OR = 0.89; 95% CI 0.53 to 1.50; I2 = 0%). There were no differences between multimedia information resource and printed participant information sheet on trial retention or participant decision-making quality. In a study within a hypothetical trial setting, multimedia information resource-only provision produced higher ratings of 'information was easy to understand' (Z = 3.03; p = 0.003) and 'I had confidence in decision-making' (Z = 2.00; p = 0.044) than printed participant information sheet-only provision. Limitations It was not possible to include data from three Studies Within A Trial in the meta-analysis due to limited sample size, and questionnaire return rates were low, which reduced the strength of the findings. Conclusions Use of multimedia information increased the rate of recruitment to trials involving children and young people compared to standard patient information sheets. Future work There should be further evaluation of the effects of multimedia information on recruitment to trials involving children and young people. It would be valuable to assess any impacts of multimedia information resources on communication between trial recruiters, children and young people, and parents. Abstract
We report on a series of four studies that investigated how user experience design (UXD) can improve printed educational materials (PEMs). We examined the perceived usability of an existing PEM for breast cancer screening and observed the usability problems associated with it (Study 1). We then compared a breast cancer screening PEM created by user experience designers with two other breast cancer screening PEMS, finding that the PEM based on UXD had higher perceived usability, and lower mentions of usability problems, than the other two PEMs (Study 2). We next examined the impact of individual differences in design expertise on perceived usability, this time including a PEM on cervical cancer screening as well as one on breast cancer screening (Study 3). Our concluding study (Study 4) then examined the impacts of UXD on learnability of PEM content as defined by answers to a knowledge questionnaire about screening administered before and after reading the PEM, and by intention to screen for cancer after reading the PEM. The first three studies showed that the involvement of UXD improved the perceived usability of PEMs, and Study 3 showed that designers differ in their ability to create useable PEMs. Study 4 failed to find a corresponding improvement in learnability or intention to screen when UXD was used to improve perceived usability. We conclude that a user experience design approach that incorporates graphic design can improve the perceived usability of PEMs in some situations (e.g., when the PEM material is not too lengthy or complex, and when the graphic designer is sufficiently skilled). However, we found no evidence that lack of perceived usability accounted for the failure of PEMS (found in previous research) to improve knowledge or intention to screen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Randomised controlled trials are often beset by problems with poor recruitment and retention. Information to support decisions on trial participation is usually provided as printed participant information sheets (PIS), which are often long, technical, and unappealing. Multimedia information (MMI), including animations and videos, may be a valuable alternative or complement to a PIS. The Trials Engagement in Children and Adolescents (TRECA) study compared MMI to PIS to investigate the effects on participant recruitment, retention, and quality of decision-making. METHODS We undertook six SWATs (Study Within A Trial) within a series of host trials recruiting children and young people. Potential participants in the host trials were randomly allocated to receive MMI-only, PIS-only, or combined MMI + PIS. We recorded the rates of recruitment and retention (varying between 6 and 26 weeks post-randomisation) in each host trial. Potential participants approached about each host trial were asked to complete a nine-item Decision-Making Questionnaire (DMQ) to indicate their evaluation of the information and their reasons for participation/non-participation. Odds ratios were calculated and combined in a meta-analysis. RESULTS Data from 3/6 SWATs for which it was possible were combined in a meta-analysis (n = 1758). Potential participants allocated to MMI-only were more likely to be recruited to the host trial than those allocated to PIS-only (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.05, 2.28; p = 0.03). Those allocated to combined MMI + PIS compared to PIS-only were no more likely to be recruited to the host trial (OR = 0.89; 95% CI 0.53, 1.50; p = 0.67). Providing MMI rather than PIS did not impact on DMQ scores. Once children and young people had been recruited to host trials, their trial retention rates did not differ according to intervention allocation. CONCLUSIONS Providing MMI-only increased the trial recruitment rate compared to PIS-only but did not affect DMQ scores. Combined MMI + PIS instead of PIS had no effect on recruitment or retention. MMIs are a useful tool for trial recruitment in children and young people, and they could reduce trial recruitment periods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the evidence-translator's experience of the expert-recommended process of translating guidelines into tools for decision making, action, and adherence with the goal of improvement. METHODS A single reviewer dual reviewed the content, quality, certainty, and applicability of primary atherosclerotic cardiovascular prevention guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force at the time of this work and used targeted searches of Medline to define the ideal structure and outcomes of tools; fill in gaps in guidelines; identify end-user needs; and choose and optimize existing tools in preparation for testing. RESULTS Guidelines addressed screening, treatments, and/or supports, but never the combination of all three. None provided all of the information needed for evidence translation. Searches in Medline filled in some evidence gaps and provided key insights into end-user needs and effective tools. However, evidence translators are left with complicated decisions about how to use and align evidence. CONCLUSION Guidelines provide some, but not all, of the evidence needed for evidence translation, requiring additional intensive work. Evidence gaps result in complicated decisions about how to use and align evidence and balance feasibility and rigor. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Guidelines, standards groups, and researchers should work to better support the process of evidence translation.

Abstract
Eighty percent of children diagnosed with cancer in childhood survive into adulthood. Fertility preservation (FP) is an important consideration, and procedures are available to reduce the risk of infertility following gonadotoxic therapies. Discussing FP options eases decision-making and minimizes regret; however, poor comprehension of these topics remains a challenge. This study evaluates if video-based educational tools increase understanding of FP options among pediatric patients and families. Videos were first tested among participants not at risk of infertility to ensure objective utility and optimize quality. In part 1, parents of pediatric surgical patients were randomized to view 2 publicly available educational videos on FP in differing orders. Each group completed pre-surveys and post-surveys assessing the comprehension and perception of video quality. In part 2, the parent and patient participants completed a comprehension assessment before and after viewing our institution-specific educational video, designed based on participant feedback from part 1. Part 1 results demonstrated a significant increase in participant knowledge and perceived understanding after viewing the videos ( P <0.001), regardless of order. In part 2, the post-test comprehension scores were significantly improved for all participants and all subgroups, P <0.01. Results suggest that video-based educational tools may help to reduce barriers to FP in pediatric oncology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many people with asthma use incorrect inhaler technique, resulting in suboptimal disease management and increased health service use. Novel ways of delivering appropriate instructions are needed. OBJECTIVE This study explored stakeholder perspectives on the potential use of augmented reality (AR) technology to improve asthma inhaler technique education. METHODS On the basis of existing evidence and resources, an information poster displaying the images of 22 asthma inhaler devices was developed. Using AR technology via a free smartphone app, the poster launched video demonstrations of correct inhaler technique for each device. In total, 21 semistructured, one-on-one interviews with health professionals, people with asthma, and key community stakeholders were conducted, and data were analyzed thematically using the Triandis model of interpersonal behavior. RESULTS A total of 21 participants were recruited into the study, and data saturation was achieved. People with asthma were confident with inhaler technique (mean score 9.17, SD 1.33, out of 10). However, health professionals and key community stakeholders identified that this perception was misguided (mean 7.25, SD 1.39, and mean 4.5, SD 0.71, for health professionals and key community stakeholders, respectively) and facilitates persistent incorrect inhaler use and suboptimal disease management. Delivering inhaler technique education using AR was favored by all participants (21/21, 100%), particularly around ease of use, with the ability to visually display inhaler techniques for each device. There was a strongly held belief that the technology has the capacity for improving inhaler technique across all participant groups (mean 9.25, SD 0.89, for participants; mean 9.83, SD 0.41, for health professionals; and mean 9.5, SD 0.71, for key community stakeholders). However, all participants (21/21, 100%) identified some barriers, particularly regarding access and appropriateness of AR for older people. CONCLUSIONS AR technology may be a novel means to address poor inhaler technique among certain cohorts of patients with asthma and serve as a prompt for health professionals to initiate review of inhaler devices. A randomized controlled trial design is needed to evaluate the efficacy of this technology for use in the clinical care setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of premature infants engage in shared decision-making regarding the care of their infant. The process of prenatal counseling typically involves a verbal conversation with a neonatal provider during hospitalization. Support people may not be available, and the pregnant person's memory is impaired by medications, pain, and stress. The American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have called for improvements to this process, including the development of educational aids. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate whether a multimedia tablet would be more effective than a paper handout in supplementing verbal clinician counseling during preterm birth hospitalization. STUDY DESIGN This was a randomized controlled trial including English-speaking pregnant people aged ≥18 years and hospitalized at 22 to 33 weeks' gestation for preterm birth. Exclusion criteria were known fetal or chromosomal anomaly and delivery before study completion. Pregnant people received either a multimedia tablet or a paper handout before verbal clinician counseling. Preintervention assessment included demographics and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and postintervention assessment included the Parent Knowledge of Premature Birth Questionnaire and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Continuous variables were analyzed by t-test and categorical variables by Fisher exact test. RESULTS A total of 122 pregnant people referred for counseling were screened; 76 were randomized, and 59 completed the study. Demographics were similar between groups, except that pregnant people in the handout group were older (mean 32 vs 29 years; P=.03). The multimedia tablet group (n=32) was less likely to report reviewing all the educational material than the paper handout group (n=27) (41% vs 72%; P=.037). Both groups correctly answered a similar number of knowledge items (P=.088). Postintervention state anxiety decreased in both groups (P<.0001), with no difference between groups. Computerized tracking showed that the multimedia group spent a median of 37 minutes reviewing the tablet. CONCLUSION Contrary to our hypothesis, a paper handout and multimedia tablet were equally effective in the labor unit for supplementing verbal preterm birth counseling, and both decreased parental anxiety.

Abstract
This paper presents two experiments examining the influences of media-specific appraisal and attribution on multimedia learning. The first experiment compares four different versions of learning material (text, text with images, animation with text, and animation with audio). Results reveal that the attributed type of appraisal, (i.e., the subjective impression of whether a medium is easy or difficult to learn with) impacts invested mental effort and learning outcomes. Though there was no evidence for the modality effect in the first experiment, we were able to identify it in a second study. We were also able to replicate appraisal and attribution findings from study 1 in study 2: if media appraisal leads to the result that learning with a specific medium is difficult, more mental effort will be invested in information processing. Consequently, learning outcomes are better, and learners are more likely to attribute knowledge acquisition to their own abilities. Outcomes also indicate that the modality effect can be explained by avoidance of split-attention rather than modality-specific information processing in working memory.

Abstract
Educating the general population about dental trauma is of public health interest. The aim of this scoping review was to map research on traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) education in the general population and to identify the most relevant methods of knowledge transfer. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science All Databases, reference lists, and grey literature were searched. Articles in English published between 2000 and 2020 were included. A total of 32 articles fulfilled inclusion criteria. The most frequently tested modality was lecture/seminar/workshop. Studies focused mainly on teachers and medical staff as target groups. Post-intervention evaluation showed an increase in knowledge. In long-term follow-up, a decrease in knowledge was found. The effectiveness of different modalities varied. Studies comparing single-modal and multimodal approaches did not confirm the effect of combined methods. Printed materials are a practical mode for laypeople. Lectures should be reserved for professions with high probability of coming into contact with a TDI victim. The Internet can be a promising tool to educate people. Educators have to choose the method of communication most appropriate for the target population. The education should include topics related to dental trauma prevention. Further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of multimodal TDI education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In 2015, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a policy statement to provide best practices on mother-infant discharge criteria, including the delivery of anticipatory guidance to mothers of healthy newborns. In our large health system with a mix of hospital types, no standard approach to or measurement of the effectiveness of newborn discharge guidance exists. At one community well-newborn unit, we aimed to increase maternal knowledge retention of newborn guidance from 69% to 90%. METHODS Data about newborn guidance effectiveness were collected by assessing maternal knowledge retention through phone follow-up quizzes. By using quality improvement methodology and informed by American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines and curricular and adult learning theory, we standardized a multidisciplinary approach to this education. Interventions included checklist, scripts, temperature-taking demonstration, gift thermometer, staff education, car seat infant mannequin, and car seat training video for staff. RESULTS Over a 1-year period, 333 mothers were interviewed after discharge from the well-newborn unit. Baseline data over the first 3 months (n = 93) showed poor maternal knowledge retention (69% correct answers). Common incorrect answers were on newborn urination habits, car seat harness clip positioning, and fever recognition. After restructuring the educational process, special cause was achieved after 3 months, with a shift of the average of correct answers to 83% followed by a second shift to 86%. CONCLUSIONS The implementation of interventions to standardize newborn discharge guidance resulted in marked and sustained improvement in maternal knowledge after well-newborn unit discharge. Our next step is to enhance the process by using videos with systemwide implementation.

Abstract
Social media offers an opportune platform for educating the public about the recommended interventions during global health emergencies. This case study evaluated information in the popular social media platform YouTube about two key interventions (namely, 'social distancing' and 'hand washing') recommended during coronavirus disease-2019. Using the keywords 'social distancing' and 'hand washing', 77 and 78 videos, respectively, were selected from YouTube through pre-defined criteria. The understandability, actionability and quality of information in these videos were assessed. Cumulatively, the social distancing videos received >9 million views and the hand-washing videos received >37 million views. Thirteen social distancing videos (16.9%) and 46 hand-washing videos (58.9%) provided understandable, actionable and good-quality information. The non-understandable, non-actionable or poor-quality videos had paradoxically more viewer engagements than the understandable, actionable or good-quality videos, respectively. Most social distancing videos came from news agencies (68.8%). Hand-washing videos were mostly uploaded by health agencies or academic institutes (52.6%). The videos were less likely to be understandable and actionable and to be of good quality when uploaded by sources other than health agencies or academic institutes. The paucity of adequate information and the limited representation of 'authoritative' sources were concerning. Strategies for harnessing social media as an effective medium for public health education are necessary during pandemics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Media-based educational materials (EMs) are becoming prominent. The purpose of this study was to compare print versus media-based EMs given to caregivers of pediatric and young adult patients undergoing surgery. We aimed to see whether print or media-based EMs lead to greater caregiver satisfaction, comfort, and preparedness for outpatient peripheral nerve catheter and pain pump management. We also assessed caregiver preference for EM modality. HYPOTHESIS We hypothesized that media-based EMs would demonstrate greater overall efficacy and thus generate higher caregiver preference. STUDY DESIGN Randomized control trial. METHODS After IRB approval, clinicaltrials.gov registration (17-0638), and informed consent, caregivers were randomized to either media or print-based EM groups. Caregivers reviewed their assigned EM and completed a standardized assessment of their comprehension. We assessed caregiver satisfaction, preparedness, and comfort level with the content on a 5-point Likert scale. On postoperative days 1 to 2, caregivers reported satisfaction, comfort, and preference for EM modality. An intent-to-treat analysis was used to compare the 2 groups. RESULTS From our final cohort of 135 caregivers, we found no difference [P>0.05] in satisfaction, comfort level, level of preparedness, or discharge readiness scores between groups. After the caregivers were given both EMs, they were evenly split in their preference for print (49.6%) versus video (50.4%) based methods. CONCLUSIONS We did not detect a significant difference in caregiver preference or feelings of preparedness between groups. Interestingly, a significant proportion of caregivers (25%) did not feel comfortable managing the peripheral nerve catheter and its pain pump at home. Future studies should work to improve caregiver comfort with educational content before patient discharge. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Providers and institutions should feel comfortable providing both print and media-based patient and caregiver education. Caregiver education may be best suited based on caregiver preference of one EM modality versus the other. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level I.

Abstract
Objective: The application of media on lifestyle-related risk factors (LRRFs) by healthcare providers to educate women may improve women’s adherence, health literacy, and awareness of LRRFs, as well as offspring’s health outcomes. This study investigated whether exposure to media-based education in gynecological and obstetric care is associated with LRRFs perceived levels of education received during pregnancy and lactation. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational study across 14 randomly generated sample points in the 12 most populated cities in Baden-Württemberg, southwest Germany. Women were recruited from gynecological and obstetric institutions. Participants were 219 women who met our inclusion criteria and completed the quantitative questionnaire. We applied ordinal logistic regression analyses to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of women’s perceived level of education received related to healthcare providers’ exposure to media-based education. Results: Media-based education on LRRFs during pregnancy through gynecologists and/or midwives were significantly associated with women’s perceived level of education received (gynecologists: OR = 4.26 (95% CI: 2.04, 8.90; p < .001); midwives: OR = 3.86 (95% CI: 1.66, 8.98; p = .002)). Similar results were found for media-based education through gynecologists and/or midwives on LRRFs during lactation and its association with women’s self-assessed level of perceived level of education received (gynecologists: OR = 4.76 (95% CI: 2.15, 10.56; p < .001); midwives: OR = 7.61 (95% CI: 3.13, 18.53; p < .001)). Conclusions: This study suggests that the exposure to media-based education in gynecological and obstetric care increases women’s perceived level of education received of LRRFs during pregnancy and lactation. Therefore, it is recommendable to apply media in gynecological and obstetric care settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patient safety is regarded as a critical quality monitoring indicator for medical institutions. The effects of a multimedia-based patient education intervention on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding fall prevention were observed. METHODS The study had a quasi-experimental research design and enrolled 140 participants. Seventy participants in the experimental group received multimedia-based patient education and a health education leaflet, while those in the control group received only the health education leaflet. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection at baseline, and a posttest was applied after the intervention. RESULTS The participants were predominantly treated in the gastroenterology department (45.7%), followed by the pulmonology department (33.6%). A total of 86.4% of patients had not experienced a fall within 3 months. After the intervention, the average scores for all variables in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. The results indicate that attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors regarding fall prevention among patients in the pulmonology department were higher than those among patients in the gastroenterology department; the differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSION The individualized health education content was of substantial significance for patients with different disease backgrounds and facilitated changes in their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding falls. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Multimedia-based patient education influenced inpatients' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors for preventing falls.

Abstract
AIM The study aim was to (1) investigate the barriers and enablers experienced by consumers to accessing and engaging with health tools in hospital waiting areas and (2) evaluate consumers' ideas for designing a health literacy responsive waiting area. BACKGROUND Health information, resources, and supports ("health tools") in waiting areas should be responsive to the health literacy needs of consumers. However, consumers' experiences of using health tools and their ideas for improving them are not known. METHODS Multicenter study was set in hospital waiting areas of outpatient rehabilitation services. Semistructured in-person interviews were conducted with 33 adult consumers attending appointments for various health conditions. Seven stages of the Framework Method were used to analyze data. RESULTS Six themes were identified which explained barriers and enablers from the perspective of consumers. The barriers were accessibility issues; personal factors-physical condition, emotional state, and preferences; and poorly presented and outdated resources. The enablers were design suits consumer needs and preferences; usable in available time or portable; and compatible environment for engaging and sharing. Consumers shared design ideas which fit within four typologies. CONCLUSIONS A range of barriers and enablers exist which have an impact on consumers' ability to engage with available health information, resources, and supports in hospital outpatient waiting areas. Practical insights from the perspective of consumers can be applied to future health service design. Consumer's design ideas suggest that partnerships with consumers should be formed to design health literacy responsive waiting areas.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study investigated the effects of multimedia-based information on anxiety, discomfort and satisfaction with care among patients undergoing cerebral angiography. BACKGROUND Cerebral angiography is the gold standard for diagnosing cerebrovascular conditions; however, patients might experience related anxiety and discomfort. For such patients, reductions in anxiety related to informational interventions have been inconsistent, and the effects on patient discomfort and satisfaction with nurses were not confirmed. DESIGN This quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent, control group, non-synchronised design was conducted using the TREND checklist. METHODS Fifty-five patients who underwent cerebral angiography at a neurosurgery ward were enrolled in this study. Twenty-seven patients in the experimental group were provided multimedia-based information on cerebral angiography, including actual on-site photographs and videos, an explanation of the benefits of cerebral angiography and introduction to medical staff. Twenty-eight in the control group were provided a printed explanation. The collected data were analysed using the χ²-test, Fisher's exact test, independent t test, paired t test or ANCOVA. RESULTS In the experimental group, anxiety was significantly decreased post-intervention, and there was a significant difference in state anxiety between the experimental and control groups. Discomfort and satisfaction with care also showed significant differences between these two groups. CONCLUSION This study confirmed that multimedia-based information decreases patient anxiety and discomfort while increasing satisfaction with care among those undergoing cerebral angiography compared with a printed explanation only. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The anxiety and discomfort of patients undergoing cerebral angiography should be considered a major nursing problem. This study evaluated the effects of multimedia-based information on anxiety, discomfort and satisfaction with care among patients undergoing cerebral angiography and showed it to be an effective nursing intervention.

Abstract
Video messages are easier to receive than text messages because of the lack of language and text barriers. In the past, when on-the-job training for junior employees were conducted in the manufacturing industry, they often carried out technical training with “mentorship system” or “work manual”. This study aims at how video makes effects to those who work in manufacturing industries, especially those from other countries. Migrant workers from abroad or companies with manufacturing plants overseas have gradually used video manual as teaching materials for enterprise education and training, especially when COVID-19 becomes a global epidemic crisis. This study used in-depth interview research methods to investigate both workers and managers in the same manufacturing industry. The results found that when using digital cameras to record and edit, the production line equipment can achieve the following effects: (1) Promoting junior workers’ self-efficacy; (2) Use of different language translations can provide simultaneous education and training for workers from multiple countries; (3) Putting digital teaching materials on cloud will make employees to use digital mobile vehicles to download and learn, that can save more time for employees.

Abstract
Background Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a common cause of renal damage, especially when taken together with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-i) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) plus a diuretic — a combination known as the “triple whammy.” New Zealand patients are at high risk of the “triple whammy” because they can easily purchase NSAIDs without a prescription and in nonpharmacy retail settings (eg, the supermarket), there is no legal requirement to include patient information sheets with medication, and direct-to-consumer drug advertising is permitted. A patient information package has been developed for those at greatest risk of the “triple whammy,” consisting of a printable PDF and an interactive online learning activity. This information package aims to inform patients about their elevated risk of harm from NSAIDS and discourage use of NSAIDs. A randomized control trial was planned to assess the effect of the information package. Objective This study aims to pilot the trial procedures for recruiting patients and providing patient information online and to assess the acceptability of the patient information package. Methods A two-armed randomized feasibility trial will be undertaken in Northland, New Zealand. We will recruit 50 patients who are at least 18 years old from those who have signed up to receive email alerts through their general practice. Patients eligible for this study have been prescribed an ACE-i or ARB plus a diuretic in the past 3 months. They will be randomly allocated to 2 study arms. The intervention arm will receive access to an information package plus usual care; the control arm will receive usual care alone. Online surveys will be used to assess NSAID knowledge and NSAID use at baseline and after 2 weeks for both arms. The intervention arm will also evaluate the information package in an additional survey based on Normalization Process Theory (NPT) concepts. We will report the number and proportion of participants who are eligible and consent to participate in the trial. Response and drop-out rates will be reported for each trial arm. The numbers of patients who interact with the education package will be reported together with the patient evaluation of it. Results Funding has been obtained from the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC 18-031). The University of Otago Human Research Ethics Committee (H21/016) has approved this trial. Consultation has been undertaken with The Ngai Tahu research consultation committee. The trial commenced on April 12, 2021. Conclusions This feasibility trial will test the study processes prior to commencing a randomized controlled trial and will determine the acceptability of the patient information package. Abstract
This study sought to determine the efficacy of particular strategies for delivering information about coping skills for stress to college student-athletes. This study analyzed 166 undergraduate varsity student-athletes. Among these participants, 60.8% were female (n = 101). The authors used a randomized controlled trial to compare video-based and text-based interventions designed to deliver coping skills information. Five weeks after the intervention, the participants completed a follow-up survey containing simple self-report questions regarding the memorability, use, and helpfulness of the coping skills information. In general, both strategies led to the use of coping skills by a sizeable proportion of the sample. The participants in the video-based deep breathing intervention were more than twice as likely to use coping skills compared with participants in the text-based intervention (risk ratio = 2.20, 95% confidence interval [1.02, 4.71], p = .03). Overall, the results suggest that both video- and text-based interventions have the potential to promote coping skills.

Abstract
Objective: No practical method or assessment tool for identifying patients' and their families' health information resource needs in a resource center exists. We sought to assess the health information and resource preferences of patients and their families to guide the planning of a health information resource center (HIRC). Methods: A needs assessment was conducted using convenience sample of patients and families drawn from the National Cancer Centre in Singapore. A survey was conducted to gather data from April 23, 2018, to May 11, 2018, at the Specialist Oncology Clinics (SOCs) and the Ambulatory Treatment Unit. Results: A total of 778 surveys were analyzed, and the majority of the respondents were Chinese (79.8%). There were 449 (57.7%) patients and 317 (40.7%) family members. Among the 778 respondents, the overall top item chosen for facilities, resources, and equipment were a quiet and comfortable area for reading and reflection (77.2%), information about education and support services offered by the center (71.6%), and computers with internet access (63.6%), respectively. The overall top three services needed in the resource center were advice on useful resources (70.6%); announcements on newly received materials, programs, and support services (64.8%); and resource personnel to assist with identifying materials/navigating through resources (53.2%). Written education pamphlets/brochures were rated as the most useful material (74.6%), followed by consumer health books (74.2%) and newsletter (59.6%). The top overall three supportive programs required were nutrition talks and cooking demonstrations (76.7%), counseling (individual, couples, family, and bereavement) (74.3%), and exercise (e.g., Tai Chi, yoga) (68.5%). Conclusions: The findings obtained from this assessment provide guidance to the development of a user-friendly, patient- and family-centric HIRC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While there is an ample literature on the evaluation of knowledge translation interventions aimed at healthcare providers, managers, and policy-makers, there has been less focus on patients and their informal caregivers. Further, no overview of the literature on dissemination strategies aimed at healthcare users and their caregivers has been conducted. The overview has two specific research questions: (1) to determine the most effective strategies that have been used to disseminate knowledge to healthcare recipients, and (2) to determine the barriers (and facilitators) to dissemination of knowledge to this group. METHODS This overview used systematic review methods and was conducted according to a pre-defined protocol. A comprehensive search of ten databases and five websites was conducted. Both published and unpublished reviews in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were included. A methodological quality assessment was conducted; low-quality reviews were excluded. A narrative synthesis was undertaken, informed by a matrix of strategy by outcome measure. The Health System Evidence taxonomy for "consumer targeted strategies" was used to separate strategies into one of six categories. RESULTS We identified 44 systematic reviews that describe the effective strategies to disseminate health knowledge to the public, patients, and caregivers. Some of these reviews also describe the most important barriers to the uptake of these effective strategies. When analyzing those strategies with the greatest potential to achieve behavioral changes, the majority of strategies with sufficient evidence of effectiveness were combined, frequent, and/or intense over time. Further, strategies focused on the patient, with tailored interventions, and those that seek to acquire skills and competencies were more effective in achieving these changes. In relation to barriers and facilitators, while the lack of health literacy or e-literacy could increase inequities, the benefits of social media were also emphasized, for example by widening access to health information for ethnic minorities and lower socioeconomic groups. CONCLUSIONS Those interventions that have been shown to be effective in improving knowledge uptake or health behaviors should be implemented in practice, programs, and policies-if not already implemented. When implementing strategies, decision-makers should consider the barriers and facilitators identified by this overview to ensure maximum effectiveness. Abstract
The concept of health literacy is increasingly being recognised as not just an individual trait, but also as a characteristic related to families, communities, and organisations providing health and social services. The aim of this study is to identify and describe, through a scoping review approach, the characteristics and the interventions that make a hospital a health literate health care organisation (HLHO), in order to develop an integrated conceptual model. We followed Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage scoping review framework, refined with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, to identify the research questions, identify relevant studies, select studies, chart the data, and collate and summarize the data. Of the 1532 titles and abstracts screened, 106 were included. Few studies have explored the effect of environmental support on health professionals, and few outcomes related to staff satisfaction/perception of helpfulness have been reported. The most common types of interventions and outcomes were related to the patients. The logical framework developed can be an effective tool to define and understand priorities and related consequences, thereby helping researchers and policymakers to have a wider vision and a more homogeneous approach to health literacy and its use and promotion in healthcare organizations.

Abstract
Background. Concussion education for coaches is being increasingly recommended by leading sports organizations, yet the effectiveness of available materials has not often been assessed. This study evaluated the impact of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (2017) publication: "Concussion safety: What coaches need to know" (the "NCAA Fact Sheet for Coaches") on participants' concussion knowledge and safety supportive intentions. Method. NCAA head coaches (n = 779) were randomized to view the NCAA Fact Sheet for Coaches either before (intervention condition) or after (control condition) responding to questions assessing concussion knowledge and intentions to engage in three behaviors (talk to team about concussion safety; allow symptomatic athlete to continue play; encourage medical staff to return athlete as quickly as possible). Results. Knowledge scores were significantly higher among coaches in the intervention condition as compared to the control condition, largely driven by differences in knowledge about the consequences of continued play postconcussion (injury, reaction time, possible death). Fewer coaches in the intervention condition expected that they would allow an athlete with a suspected concussion continue to participate in a game or practice or that they would encourage medical staff to return athletes to play as quickly as possible. Discussion. The present study provides evidence that educational content, like that contained in the NCAA Fact Sheet for Coaches, may have a positive short-term impact on concussion knowledge and behavioral intentions of coaches. In light of these findings, sports organizations should consider providing similar educational materials to coaches, evaluating whether the information is impactful in their population.

Abstract
Communicating about clinical trials and medical research is challenging. An appropriate communication is essential to reduce some of the barriers associated with poor patients' enrollment in clinical trials and with patients' uninformed consent or uninformed refusal. An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of educational animations compared to brochures with and without visuals, and with the materials currently used by the NIH. These materials focused on explaining placebos, randomization, the steps necessary to enroll in a clinical trial, and how and by who patients' protection is ensured. A total of 1194 cancer patients and survivors completed this 4 by 4 experiment through a Qualtrics panel. The findings showed that animations improved participants knowledge about and attitudes toward clinical trials and were more effective than brochures presenting information from the NIH, especially for those individuals with low motivation and low ability to comprehend health-related information. Several evidence-based theoretical explanations of the functioning of animations are provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients undergoing cardiac surgeries are at high risk of developing delirium. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to determine the effects of multimedia education on postoperative delirium in patients undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft. DESIGN This study was a randomized clinical trial. METHODS In this study, 110 patients undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft were assigned to two groups, control and intervention. Patients in the intervention group received multimedia education, and those in the control group received routine training. The inclusion criteria were experiencing the coronary artery bypass graft for the first time and non-development of post-operative cardiogenic shock or myocardial rupture. After measuring the level of consciousness, patients were examined in terms of delirium using the confusion assessment method for the ICU scale twice a day from admission to discharge from the ICU. The data were statistically analysed using χ2 test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS Patients of both groups were matched in terms of demographics. The highest incidence of delirium was observed on the first day after surgery in the intervention group (14.5%) and in the morning of the second day after surgery (29.1%) in the control group. Moreover, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of delirium in the morning of the second, third, and fourth days after surgery as it was higher in the control group over these days. CONCLUSION Considering the lower incidence of post-operative delirium in patients who experienced multimedia education rather than control group, the use of this non-pharmaceutical method is recommended to prevent delirium in such patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Delirium is also an acute organic brain syndrome that often leads to complicated conditions after cardiac surgeries. Fortunately, delirium is a preventable issue. The implementation of multimedia education as a non-pharmacological approach had positive effects on patients' delirium.

Abstract
Objective We examined website formats to increase smokers' recognition of harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in cigarettes. Methods Adult, daily smokers (N = 279) were randomized to view a brief, single-page study website showing HPHC names and uses. The intervention site was tailored + interactive, labeled by cigarette brand/subbrand showing color imagery and pop-up boxes; the generic + static website (control) was unbranded in greyscale. Eye tracking equipment measured attention (dwell time) to precise website features. Linear regression analyses compared attention to HPHC descriptions and the correct recognition of 15 HPHC chemicals. A randomly selected sub-sample (N = 30) of participants qualitatively rated website usability. Results Despite spending less dwell time on the HPHC text and entire website, adult smokers who viewed the generic + static website had greater improvement in HPHC recognition compared to the tailored + interactive website (4.6 vs 3.6; p = .02); this finding contrasts with current literature on tailoring and interactivity. Both websites were rated highly on ease-of-use and readability. Conclusions Basic formats and narrative HPHC Web-based content attracted less visual attention, yet increased recognition of these chemicals in cigarettes, compared to brand-tailored, interactive web-based content.

Abstract
Purpose Patients newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer should be informed of the ramifications of cancer treatment on swallowing function during their pretreatment consultation. The purpose of this study was to explore (a) the usefulness and (b) the acceptability of video-animation in helping patients to understand the basics of the swallowing mechanism and dysphagia. Method Thirteen patients treated for head and neck cancer participated in this study. Think-aloud, a type of qualitative methodology, was used to encourage patients to verbalize their thoughts while watching two short video-animations showing the process of normal/abnormal swallowing. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Four main themes were identified as follows: (a) patient interest and engagement, (b) acceptability of visual imagery and narration, (c) information provision and learning, and (d) personal relevance and intended action. Patients appeared interested and engaged in the video-animations, asking several spontaneous questions about how to maintain or improve swallowing function. Learning was evident from patients' recognition and verbalizations of grossly disordered swallowing patterns. Most patients reported the images to be visually acceptable and could often relate what they were seeing to their own swallowing experience. Many patients also verbalized recognition of the need to keep muscles active through exercises. Conclusions These results suggest that the video-animations of swallowing were acceptable, interesting, informative, and relevant for most patients. It was therefore useful not only as an education tool, but also showed potential to influence patients' intentions to undertake preventative interventions that may preserve better swallowing function after cancer treatment.

Abstract
Audiovisual educational material has been used effectively as a knowledge translation strategy in patient education. Given the need to impact maternal mortality rates, 12 video clips related to maternal and neonatal health information were designed based on the results of a previous systematic review (SR). The content was formulated based on clinical practice guideline recommendations and validated following a formal consensus methodology. This study evaluated the effectiveness of knowledge transfer from the 12 video clips in terms of attention, emotional response, and recall by using neuroscience tools. In a randomized cross-over trial, 155 subjects (pregnant women, non-pregnant women, and men) received random sequences of 13 video clips, including a control video clip. Participants’ attention levels were evaluated through eye tracking, their emotional reactions were monitored by electrodermal activity and pupillary diameter, and their recall was tested via a questionnaire. An analysis was performed to evaluate differences in the groups and between the video clips and the control clip using variance analysis models that considered period, sequence, and carry-over effects. Results revealed that fixation length was greater in women than in men, while the greatest emotional effects occurred in men. All three groups had good recall results, without any significant differences between them. Although the sequencing did influence attentional processes, no carry-over effect was demonstrated. However, a differential effect was noted among video clips in all three outcomes, that is, when adjusted for group, level of education, and having had children. The control clip generated less attention, emotional reaction, and recall than the experimental video clips. The video clips about maternal and neonatal health were shown to be effective in the transference and comprehension of information. Therefore, cognitive neuroscience techniques are useful in evaluating knowledge translation strategies through audiovisual formats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop an educational mobile application (app) for expectant parents diagnosed with risk factors for premature birth. METHODS Parent and medical advisory panels delineated the vision for the app. The app helps prepare for preterm birth. For pilot testing, obstetricians offered the app between 18-22 weeks gestational age to English speaking parents with risk factors for preterm birth. After 4 weeks of use, each participant completed a questionnaire. The software tracked topics accessed and duration of use. RESULTS For pilot testing, 31 participants were recruited and 28 completed the questionnaire. After app utilization, participants reported heightened awareness of preterm birth (93%), more discussion of pregnancy or prematurity issues with partner (86%), increased questions at clinic visits (43%), and increased anxiety (21%). Participants reported receiving more prematurity information from the app than from their healthcare providers. The 15 participants for whom tracking data was available accessed the app for an average of 8 h. CONCLUSION Parents with increased risk for preterm birth may benefit from this mobile app educational program. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS If the pregnancy results in preterm birth hospitalization, parents would have built a foundation of knowledge to make informed medical care choices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause community-acquired acute kidney injury, especially in high-risk populations. Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) medication guide and over-the-counter labeling vaguely describe kidney risks of NSAIDs and do not provide information for patients to evaluate their risk for kidney problems. The purpose of this study was to use a mobile application to evaluate the impact of patient choice of media delivering NSAID avoidance education on patient knowledge about kidney risks associated with NSAIDs. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. The mobile application was used to deliver either a redesigned FDA medication guide or a video focused on NSAID risks (selected by the patient), followed by patient knowledge questions (PKQs) and a kidney risk assessment. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS One hundred fifty adult primary care patients in southeast Michigan. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcome was the score on 5 NSAID PKQs between the media selected. Secondary outcomes included characterization of media choice among different demographic and NSAID kidney risk groups. The relationship between kidney risk assessment and self-reported NSAID avoidance behavior also was evaluated. RESULTS The majority of participants (72.7%) chose to review print material. Those that chose print had significantly higher PKQ scores (5 total points) compared with participants who selected the video: mean scores 4.2 ± 0.9 with print and 3.8 ± 1.0 with video (P = 0.034). Older patients (>65 years) had significantly lower PKQ scores compared with other age groups. Forty-four percent of individuals (n = 66) reported current NSAID use, and 65% stated that they would avoid NSAIDs after the selected education material. CONCLUSION Scores for questions related to NSAID kidney risk knowledge were higher among participants who chose print compared with video education material. Education regarding NSAID kidney risks encouraged patients to limit their use. Targeted education may be beneficial in high-risk (e.g., older) patients and should be further studied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer patients of reproductive age are at risk of infertility as a result of their treatment. Oncofertility decision support resources can assist patients with fertility decision-making before treatment yet available oncofertility resources contain varying levels of detail and different fertility options. The key information/sections needed in oncofertility resources remain unclear. To explore the information needs for oncofertility decision-making before cancer treatment, we aimed to evaluate existing oncofertility decision support resources with breast cancer patients and providers. METHODS We conducted 30 to 90-min interviews that included a survey questionnaire and open-ended questions with patients and providers between March and June 2016. Interviews were transcribed verbatim. Analysis involved descriptive statistics for survey responses and thematic analysis of qualitative data. RESULTS A total of 16 participants completed interviews. Key information perceived by most participants as necessary for fertility decision-making included tailored post-treatment pregnancy rates, cost ranges and financial assistance for the fertility options based on patients' situation. However, patient and provider participants expressed differing opinions on the inclusion of all before and after treatment fertility options and the amount of fertility information required at diagnosis. CONCLUSION The evaluation identified fertility information needs among patients in addition to providers' views on patient needs. While existing oncofertility resources contain information perceived as necessary for decision-making there is an opportunity to use these findings to create or enhance resources to better meet the needs of patients. Additionally, patients and providers differing views on information needs highlight the opportunity for provider training to ensure better communication using resources in clinic to understand specific patient needs.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the study was to obtain feedback on the layout, content, and potential use of a blood pressure (BP) action sheet, a purpose-designed written resource for Indonesian patients with hypertension. Methods Telephone interviews were conducted with 13 health professionals, 12 community health workers, and 12 patients in rural Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to explore their impressions of the BP action sheet, how the sheet might affect management of hypertension, and suggestions for improvement. Results Participants felt that the sheet presented useful information about achieving the target BP and managing hypertension. The use of the sheet could be optimized by engaging community health workers to help explain the information and to provide assistance around the stated actions for hypertension management. A more attractive design and inclusion of more details were suggested. Both patients and health care workers expressed interest in using the sheet. Conclusion The BP action sheet has potential as a useful resource for patients with hypertension by providing information, recording target BP, and facilitating patient-centered communication. Use of the BP action sheet might provide an effective low-cost way for health professionals and community health workers to encourage patients to achieve their target BP.

Abstract
PURPOSE Before performing a surgical procedure, informed consent (IC) is obtained. Parents may exhibit anxiety and/or a desire for more knowledge during the IC process for their child. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of a multimedia intervention (MMI) versus conventional discussion on parental understanding and anxiety during the IC process for infants undergoing surgery for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. METHODS A time-interrupted series design was employed over a 9-month period. In the first phase, conventional discussion for IC was performed. In the second phase, a MMI was utilized. In both phases, anxiety scores and post-consent knowledge tests were collected. RESULTS 31 participants were included in the study, 17 in the conventional consent and 14 in the MMI phase. Parental anxiety around the IC discussion was measured. There was a significant decrease in anxiety noted with use of the MMI (p = 0.046) but no significant difference in knowledge (p = 0.84). CONCLUSION The MMI significantly reduced parental anxiety during the IC process. Providers may consider applying this type of MMI to other surgical procedures. Securing IC in a manner that improves knowledge and decreases anxiety may improve long-term understanding and parental satisfaction with the health care process.

Abstract
Background Patients need to be educated about possible treatment choices in order to make informed medical decisions. As most patients are medical laypeople, they find it difficult to understand complex medical information sufficiently to feel confident about a decision. Multimedia interventions such as videos are increasingly used to supplement personal consultations with medical professionals. Former research has shown that such interventions may have a positive effect on understanding, decision making, and emotional reactions. However, it is thus far unclear how different features of videos influence these outcomes. Objective We aimed to examine the impact of visualization formats and basic navigational options in medical information videos about cruciate ligament surgery on recipients’ knowledge gain, emotions, attitude, and hypothetical decision-making ability. Methods In a between-group randomized experiment (Study 1), 151 participants watched 1 of 4 videos (schematic vs realistic visualization; available vs unavailable navigational options). In a separate online survey (Study 2), 110 participants indicated their preference for a video design. All participants were medical laypeople without personal experience with a cruciate ligament rupture and were presented with a fictional decision situation. Results In Study 1, participants who used navigational options (n=36) gained significantly more factual knowledge (P=.005) and procedural knowledge (P<.001) than participants who did not have or use navigational options (n=115). A realistic visualization induced more fear (P=.001) and disgust (P<.001) than a schematic video. Attitude toward the surgery (P=.02) and certainty regarding the decision for or against surgery (P<.001) were significantly more positive after watching the video than before watching the video. Participants who watched a schematic video rated the video significantly higher than that by participants who watched a realistic video (P<.001). There were no significant group differences with regard to hypothetical decision making and attitude toward the intervention. In addition, we did not identify any influence of the visualization format on knowledge acquisition. In Study 2, 58 of 110 participants (52.7%) indicated that they would prefer a schematic visualization, 26 (23.6%) preferred a realistic visualization, 17 (15.5%) wanted either visualization, and 9 (8.2%) did not want to watch a video at all. Of the participants who wanted to watch a video, 91 (90.1%) preferred to have navigational options, 3 (3.0%) preferred not to have navigational options, and 7 (6.9%) did not mind the options. Conclusion Our study indicates that the perception of medical information videos is influenced by their design. Schematic videos with navigational options are the most helpful among all videos to avoid negative emotions and support knowledge acquisition when informing patients about an intervention. The visualization format and navigational options are important features that should be considered when designing medical videos for patient education. Abstract
BACKGROUND The after visit summary (AVS) is a paper or electronic document given to patients after a medical appointment, which is intended to summarize patients' health and guide future care, including self-management tasks. OBJECTIVE To describe experiences of health systems implementing a redesigned outpatient AVS in commercially available electronic health record (EHR) systems to inform future optimization. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted semi-structured interviews with information technology and clinical leaders at 12 hospital and community-based healthcare institutions across the continental United States focusing on the process of AVS redesign and implementation. We also report our experience implementing a redesigned AVS in the Epic EHR at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, NY. RESULTS Health systems experienced many challenges implementing the redesigned AVS. While many IT leaders noted that the redesigned AVS is easier to understand and the document is better organized, they claim the effort is time-consuming, Epic system upgrades render AVS modifications non-functional, and primary care and specialty practices have different needs in regards to content and formatting. Our team was able to modify the document by changing the order of print groups, modifying the font size, bolding section headers, and inserting page breaks. Similar to other health systems, our team found that it is difficult to achieve some desired features due to limitations in the EHR platform. CONCLUSION Health IT leaders view the AVS as a valuable source of information for patients. However, limitations to AVS modifications in EHR systems present challenges to optimizing the tool. EHR vendors should incorporate learning from healthcare systems innovation efforts and consider building more flexibility into their product development.

Abstract
Background Pediatric acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common childhood illness with substantial health, family, and system impacts. Connecting parents to evidence-based patient education is key to effective decision-making and therapeutic management of AGE. Digital knowledge translation (KT) tools offer a promising approach to communicate complex health information to parents; therefore, we developed a whiteboard animation video for parents about AGE. To optimize future effectiveness evaluation of this video, the purpose of this pilot study is to assess feasibility of effectiveness outcomes and specific trial methods in four key trial domains. Methods A single-site, parallel-arm, pilot randomized trial will be conducted. The trial will employ quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate feasibility objectives in key scientific, process, management, and resource domains. Parents seeking care for a child with AGE in the emergency department (ED) over a 6-month period will be randomized to receive the whiteboard animation video or a sham control video. Quantitative data will be collected electronically in the ED and at home (4–10 days post-ED visit). Qualitative data will be collected via semi-structured interviews with experimental condition participants after quantitative data collection. Data will be collected to perform a sample size calculation for a full-scale trial. Scientific outcomes will include parental knowledge, decision regret, and health utilization, and estimation for these outcomes will use confidence intervals (CI) of different widths to illustrate strength of preliminary evidence. CIs will be presented alongside minimum clinically important differences (MCIDs) calculated using two methods: (1) data driven and (2) patient perspective. Descriptive statistics will be calculated to describe process, management, and resource domain outcomes. Qualitative thematic analysis will be conducted to describe additional process, management, and resource outcomes in the experimental group. Analyses will be performed using intention-to-treat. Discussion This pilot randomized trial will inform the design and conduct of a full-scale, effectiveness trial by gathering key data in four domains: scientific, process, management, and resource. These results will impact the emerging field of KT efforts targeting health consumers and advance the science on the best mode of patient education for acute childhood illnesses. Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disorder that disproportionately affects older women worldwide. Raising awareness regarding osteoporosis within this demographic is significant for health promotion. Initial evidence suggests that visualisations of illness and treatment can improve illness perceptions, increase treatment motivations and even promote health behaviours. We are yet to understand whether different visualisation mediums vary in their impact on perceptions and motivations. PURPOSE We investigated whether physical models or virtual animations had a greater impact on changing perceptions of osteoporosis and treatment motivation in an at-risk population of older women. METHODS A total of 128 women aged 50 and over were randomly assigned to view a brief presentation about osteoporosis using either 3-D printed bone models or electronic tablet animations. Illness perceptions, medication beliefs and motivations were measured at baseline and post-presentation. Mixed ANOVAs were used to identify significant changes over time between groups. RESULTS There were no significant interaction effects, revealing that neither medium had a greater impact on beliefs over time. Significant main effects of time revealed that from baseline to post-presentation, both mediums increased consequence beliefs, personal and treatment control, understanding of osteoporosis, motivations to take treatment if needed and medication necessity beliefs. Timeline beliefs and medication concerns decreased over time for both groups. CONCLUSIONS Both 3-D models and animations of osteoporosis are equally effective in changing beliefs and treatment motivation in an at-risk population. Visualisation devices are brief, cost-effective, have high acceptability and have considerable clinical applicability to promote awareness and prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies show that patients recall less than half of the information given by their physicians. Use of video in medicine increases patient comprehension and satisfaction and decreases anxiety. However, studies have not elaborated on video content. OBJECTIVE To use principles of learning with multimedia to improve the Mohs surgery consultation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors developed 2 informational videos on Mohs surgery: traditional versus narrative. The focus of the traditional video was purely didactic. The narrative video included patient testimonials, patient-physician interaction, and animations. New Mohs surgery patients viewed either the traditional (n = 40) or the narrative video (n = 40). Existing Mohs surgery patients (n = 40) viewed both videos. Both groups answered questionnaires about their satisfaction. RESULTS For new Mohs surgery patients, no significant difference was found between the traditional and the narrative video groups because respondent satisfaction was high for both video formats. For existing Mohs surgery patients, all respondents (100%) reported that videos were helpful for understanding Mohs surgery; however, the majority would recommend the narrative over the traditional format (72.5% vs 27.5%, p = .01). CONCLUSION Technology is useful for patient education because all patients preferred seeing a video to no video. Further research is needed to optimize effective multimedia use in patient education.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Human biospecimens are an invaluable resource for addressing cancers and other chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an educational intervention on biospecimen knowledge and attitudes. METHODS The participants consisted of 112 African Americans, 18 years and older, and who had not provided biospecimens for any health-related research in the past. A total of 55 participants received the educational brochure, and 57 received the educational video. The main outcomes of the study were knowledge and attitudes for biospecimen donation. This information was collected pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS The average knowledge scores increased (p < 0.0001) and the average attitude scores for biospecimen donation improved (p < 0.0001) post-intervention for both the video and brochure conditions. There was an interaction between the intervention condition and knowledge where the participants who received the educational video showed a greater increase in knowledge pre-to-post compared to those who received the educational brochure (p = 0.0061). There were no significant interactions between the two intervention conditions for attitudes toward biospecimen donation. DISCUSSION The results of this study demonstrated the feasibility and efficacy of an academic institution collaborating with the African American community in developing educational tools for biospecimen donation.

Abstract
CONTEXT A significant contribution to the success of lung transplantation is the recipient's ability to self-manage a multidrug regimen and follow complex instructions. Effective education has always been an integral component of the process of preparing patients to care for themselves post lung transplant. Impaired cognition, anxiety, and psychological distress, however, can decrease the retention of posttransplant care information provided during education sessions. OBJECTIVE This quality improvement project evaluated whether a multimedia education method compared to standard education method improves posttransplant care knowledge, anxiety, and satisfaction with the education experience in lung transplant patients and their caregivers. METHODS Two education methods groups, comprised of transplant patients and their primary caregivers, were compared: (1) historic control group who received the standard education (n = 19 dyads) and (2) multimedia group who received the new multimedia education (n = 18 dyads). Knowledge of posttransplant care was evaluated in both groups before and after receiving the education. A satisfaction survey was administered at the end of the education program. RESULTS A significantly higher percentage of patients receiving the multimedia method reported gains in posttransplant care knowledge ( P = .05), less anxiety about the transplant surgery ( P = .02), and satisfaction with the education method ( P = .02) when compared to those receiving the standard method. Caregivers and transplant team member also indicated that the multimedia method was more effective than the standard method. CONCLUSION Multimedia methods decrease anxiety and increase satisfaction with the education experience when preparing patients for lung transplantation.
