Abstract
BackgroundChildren with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes often face language impairments and central auditory processing difficulties. The correlations between these issues, seizure timing, and neuropsychiatric challenges are not fully understood. This study delves into the connections between language impairments and central auditory processing difficulties in cases with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, examining their links with seizure occurrence and neuropsychiatric function.Materials and MethodsPatients with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes were categorized based on seizure timing: group 1 experienced seizures postbedtime, and group 2 prewaking. Both, alongside controls, underwent the Turkish Expressive and Receptive Language Test (TIFALDI) for language skills, and the Frequency Pattern and Duration Pattern tests for central auditory processing difficulties. Neuropsychiatric assessments involved the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the Conners Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short, and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11.ResultsThe study comprised 56 patients with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (ages 6-13) and 32 healthy controls. Both groups significantly lagged behind controls on the Frequency Pattern and Duration Pattern tests (P < .001). In the TIFALDI, the expressive language scores varied between group 1 and controls (P = .04) but not the receptive language scores or the test's expressive and receptive language results between group 2 and controls (P > .05). In the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, group 1 diverged from controls in behavioral and kind and helpful behavior scores (P = .016 and P = .012). Group 1's Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 values surpassed controls' (P = .038).ConclusionChildren with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes have a high central auditory processing difficulties prevalence, regardless of seizure timing. Those with postsleep seizures tend to confront expressive language difficulties, alongside issues in prosocial behavior and impulsivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to assess whether children and adolescents with epilepsy are at higher risk of behavioral disturbances when they have concomitant cognitive disturbances. METHODS Behavioral scores were generated using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Cognitive evaluation was applied by using different age appropriate versions of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. CBCL scores (total, externalizing, internalizing) were compared between patients with and without intellectual disability (IQ score < 70 and ≥70, respectively). RESULTS 144 (10.2 mean age, 6.0-17.9 range) patients were recruited for the study. Patients with mild to moderate intellectual disability (full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) < 70) were not at higher risk of behavioral disturbances (total CBCL score ≥ 63) than patients without cognitive impairment. The mean total CBCL score was 62.0 ± 10.6 (range 42.0-83.5, 95% CI 57.9-62.0) and 59.3 ± 10.3 (range 38.0-80.0, CI 57.4-61.2) for patients with FSIQ < 70 and ≥70, respectively. There was no correlation between FSIQ and total CBCL scores. These findings were true for all IQ subcategories. SIGNIFICANCE Behavioral disturbances among children and adolescents with epilepsy occur despite the presence or absence of intellectual dysfunction with respect to full-scale IQ.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to investigate the alternations of neuromagnetic activity across neurocognitive core networks among early untreated children having benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Methods We recorded the Magnetoencephalography (MEG) resting-state data from 48 untreated children having BECTS and 24 healthy children. The fourth edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) was utilized to divide the children with BECTS into two groups: the cognitive impairment (CI) group with a full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) of < 90 and the cognitive non-impairment (CNI) group with an FSIQ of > 90. We selected 26 bilateral cognitive-related regions of interest based on the triple network model. The neurocognitive core network spectral power was estimated using a minimum norm estimate (MNE). Results In the CNI group, the spectral power inside the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the bilateral caudal middle frontal cortex (CMF) enhanced within the delta band and reduced within the alpha band. Both the CI and the CNI group demonstrated enhanced spectral power inside the bilateral posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), bilateral precuneus (PCu) region, bilateral superior and middle temporal cortex, bilateral inferior parietal lobe (IPL), and bilateral supramarginal cortex (SM) region in the delta band. Moreover, there was decreased spectral power in the alpha band. In addition, there were consistent changes in the high-frequency spectrum (> 90 Hz). The spectral power density within the insula cortex (IC), superior temporal cortex (ST), middle temporal cortex (MT), and parahippocampal cortex (PaH) also decreased. Therefore, studying high-frequency activity could lead to a new understanding of the pathogenesis of BECTS. Conclusion The alternations of spectral power among neurocognitive core networks could account for CI among early untreated children having BECTS. The dynamic properties of spectral power in different frequency bands could behave as biomarkers for diagnosing new BECTS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive function sleep spiking activation and brain activity in self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS). METHODS We used spike-wave index (SWI), which means the percentage of the spike and slow wave duration to the total non-REM (NREM) sleep time, as the grouping standard. A total of 14 children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%), 21 children with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%), and 20 healthy control children were recruited for this study. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (Chinese version) (WISC-IV). Magnetic source activity was assessed using magnetoencephalography calculated for each frequency band using the accumulated source imaging (ASI) technique. RESULTS Children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) had the lowest cognitive function scores, followed by those with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%) and then healthy controls. There were significant differences in the localization of magnetic source activity between the three groups: in the alpha (8-12 Hz) frequency band, children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) showed deactivation of the medial frontal cortex (MFC) region; in the beta (12-30 Hz) frequency band, children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) showed deactivation of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) segment; and in the gamma (30-80 Hz) frequency band, children in the healthy group showed activation of the PCC region. CONCLUSION This study revealed significant decreases in cognitive function in children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) compared to children with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%) and healthy children, as well as significant differences in magnetic source activity between the three groups. The findings suggest that deactivation of magnetic source activity in the PCC and MFC regions is the main cause of cognitive function decline in SeLECTS patients with some frequency dependence.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances may be a significant source of distress for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and consequently also for their families. Crucially, sleep disturbances might be influenced by comorbidity. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD) often co-occur, and consequently, investigating sleep disturbances in children with comorbidity of ADHD and SLD is essential. Our study aimed at detecting sleep difficulties in a group of 74 children with ADHD, 78 children with SLD, and 76 children with ADHD and SLD by using the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children. The results showed that sleep difficulties emerge more clearly in children with comorbid ADHD and SLD compared to children with only ADHD or SLD. These sleep difficulties were not due to differences in ages and behavioral/emotional problems. In conclusion, evaluating sleep disturbances is important when assessing and managing children with ADHD, SLD, and particularly with the two comorbid conditions, to better understand their difficulties and develop tailored interventions.

Abstract
Childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (CECTS), Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) and Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) are some of the most common pediatric epileptic syndromes. Despite the relatively benign (self-limited) course of epilepsy, current evidence suggests that these conditions are associated with an increased risk of neuropsychological and behavioral comorbidities. This study provides a cross-epileptic syndromes' comparison reporting on the cognitive and behavioral profile of a cohort of 32 children with CECTS (n = 14), CAE (n = 10) and PS (n = 8), aged 6 to 15 years old. Frequent, although often subclinical cognitive difficulties involving attention, executive functions and academic abilities were found in children with CECTS and CAE, and to a lesser extent in PS. Internalizing symptoms (particularly anxiety) were more common in the PS group compared to CECTS and CAE based on parental reports. Correlational analysis revealed a significant correlation between phonemic fluency and seizure-free interval at the time of evaluation, suggesting a beneficial effect of epilepsy remission on this executive function measure in all the three groups. These results add to existing literature providing further detail on neuropsychological and behavioral peculiarities of children with CECTS, CAE, and PS. Moreover, the need for neuropsychological assessment as part of the standard childhood epilepsy evaluation is stressed. The results are discussed in the context of the current literature, highlighting areas of consensus and controversies related to the clinical management of these epileptic syndromes as well as directions for future research.

Abstract
Introduction There is substantial evidence that children with epilepsy experience more sleep, behavior and cognitive challenges than children without epilepsy. However, the literature is limited in describing the relationship between sleep, epilepsy, cognition and behavioral challenges and the interactions amongst these factors over time. This study aims to understand the nature and strength of the relationship between sleep, cognition, mood and behavior in children with new-onset epilepsy as assessed by multiple informants at multiple time periods using multiple different dependent measures. Methods 332 participants (6-16years) were recruited within 6 weeks of their first recognized seizure. The comparison group was comprised of 266 healthy siblings. Participants underwent sleep evaluation by a parent using the Sleep Behavioral Questionnaire (SBQ), cognitive evaluation using a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, a behavioral evaluation using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL from parents and TRF from teachers) and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). These evaluations were completed at baseline (B), at 18 months, and at 36 months. Results Compared to siblings, children with new-onset epilepsy had more sleep disturbance (SBQ), higher rates of behavioral problems (CBCL and TRF), lower cognitive testing scores, and higher rates of depression; which persisted over the 36-month study. Sleep significantly correlated with behavioral problems, cognitive scores and depression. When divided into categories based of sleep disturbance scores, 39.7% of children with epilepsy experienced "Persistently Abnormal Sleep", while 14.8% experienced "Persistently Normal Sleep". Children with persistently abnormal sleep experienced the highest rates of behavioral problems, depression and cognitive impairment compared to those with persistently normal sleep, regardless of epilepsy syndrome. Younger age of seizure onset, younger age at testing, and lower grade level at baseline were associated with persistently abnormal sleep. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the nature, strength, reliability, stability and persistence of the relationship between sleep, cognition, and behavioral problems over time in a large cohort of children with newly diagnosed epilepsy, as assessed by multiple informants at different timepoints. The results of this study indicate that children with epilepsy are at a high risk of significant persisting neurobehavioral multimorbidity. Therefore, early screening for these challenges may be essential for optimizing quality of life long-term.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between sleep disturbances and behavioral problems as well as quality of life (QOL) in Chinese children with epilepsy. METHODS Caregivers of 167 epileptic children aged 3 to 12 years completed the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL™, 4.0 Core). RESULTS The prevalence of sleep disturbances (CSHQ total score >41) in epileptic children was 73.7% [95% CI (66.9%.80.4%)]. Epileptic children with sleep disturbances demonstrated more behavioral problems and lower QOL compared to those without sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances such as sleep anxiety and daytime sleepiness were associated with more behavioral problems and lower QOL (p <0.05). Linear regression analyses showed that higher disturbance in sleep duration domain were associated with more behavioral problems, while higher sleep disordered breathing domains was associated with lower QOL (p <0.05). The interaction between sleep disturbances and behavioral problems in predicting QOL was not significant. The sensitivity analysis using 48 as an alternative cutoff for CSHQ total score obtained consistent results. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbances occur frequently among Chinese children with epilepsy, and are associated with more behavioral problems and lower QOL. The sleep disturbance-QOL association is unlikely contingent on behavioral problems. This study highlights the necessity of evaluating and treating sleep disturbances multidimensionally among children with epilepsy to promote their whole health and wellbeing.

The association of sleep quality and aggression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. Sleep Med Rev 2021; 59:101500. Abstract
Poor sleep quality is closely related to aggression, but despite the promise of new therapeutic possibilities, a systematic synthesis of observational research on the association between sleep quality and aggression is lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the association between sleep quality and aggression, using the academic databases PubMed and PsycINFO. Subjective and objective measures of sleep quality were included, as well as multiple measures of aggression, assessing aggressive and externalizing behavior, anger, hostility and irritability. Ninety-two observational articles, containing 96 studies, encompassing a total of 58.154 children, adolescents and adults were sourced out of 7161 references identified. Methodological quality was moderate or strong in 76% of studies. Data for meta-analysis was available from 74 studies. Poorer sleep quality was associated with higher aggression in 80.8% of studies. Pooled results showed a correlation of 0.28 (95%CI 0.25-0.31; I2 = 90.1%) and odds ratio of 3.61 (95%CI 1.13-11.51; I2 = 88.3%). Effect estimates and heterogeneity varied according to population type and measurement instruments, but not according to article quality or age group. Our findings confirm that poor sleep quality is consistently associated with higher aggression. As most evidence is cross-sectional, more prospective and high-quality experimental evidence is required to elucidate cause-effect and optimize prevention and treatment of aggression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was aimed to explore the relationship between neural network changes in newly diagnosed children with Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS) and cognitive impairment. METHODS Children's cognition was evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data of 18 healthy children and 22 BECTS patients were recorded in order to construct a functional connectivity (FC) network, which was quantified by graph theory (GT). RESULTS The mean age of the control group was 7.94 ± 1.89 years, and the mean age of BECTS patients was 8.14 ± 1.73 years. Our results show that the WISC-IV index scores in the BECTS group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Besides, the FC network pattern of BECTS patients changed significantly in the 12-30, 30-80, and 250-500 Hz frequency band. The local functional connections between posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and frontal lobe varied significantly in 12-30, 80-250, and 250-500 Hz. Our GT analysis shows that the connection strength of BECTS patients increases significantly in the 12-30 Hz frequency band, the path length decreases significantly in the 12-30 Hz and 30-80 Hz frequency bands, with the clustering coefficient decreasing significantly in the 12-30 Hz, 30-80 Hz, and 250-500 Hz frequency bands. Correlation analysis showed that the full-scale IQ (FSIQ) was positively correlated with the 12-30 Hz clustering coefficient, verbal comprehension index (VCI) was positively correlated with the 250-500 Hz clustering coefficient, perceptual reasoning index (PRI) was positively correlated with the 12-30 Hz clustering coefficient, and perceptual reasoning index (PSI) was negatively correlated with the 12-30 Hz path length. CONCLUSION There is a trend of cognitive impairment in patients with early BECTS. This trend of cognitive impairment in early BECTS children may be related to the changes in the FC network pattern.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our aim was to explore the pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive function changes in early untreated children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). METHODS Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was performed in 33 children with BECTS and 18 healthy children. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, fourth edition (WISC-IV) was used to divide children with BECTS into two groups. Normal cognitive function was defined as a full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) of >80, while decreased cognitive function was defined as a FSIQ of <80. Accumulated source imaging was used to evaluate the neuromagnetic source activity in multifrequency bands. RESULTS Of the 33 patients with early untreated BECTS, a total of 17 had a FSIQ of <80 and 16 had FSIQ of >80. The course of epilepsy and number of seizures in the FSIQ <80 group were higher than that in the FSIQ >80 group. Our MEG results showed that in the 4-8 Hz frequency band, both patient groups had inactivation of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) region compared with the healthy control group. In the 30-80 Hz frequency band, the FSIQ <80 group showed inactivation of the PCC region compared with both the healthy control group and the FSIQ >80 group. In the 80-250 Hz frequency band, the FSIQ <80 group had inactivated of the medial frontal cortex (MFC) region compared with the healthy control group. In the 30-80 Hz frequency band, the strength of neuromagnetic source in patients with BECTS with FSIQ <80 was higher than that in the FSIQ >80 group and the healthy control group. CONCLUSIONS The magnetic source inactivation of the MFC and PCC regions during the interictal time may be the reason for cognitive decline in early untreated children with BECTS. Children with BECTS with cognitive decline had a longer course of epilepsy and more seizures. The magnetic source localization in the 4-8 Hz frequency band may be a new imaging marker for the diagnosis of new BECTS.

Abstract
Children with epilepsy (CWE) are more likely to have sleep and behavioral disorders. With differences in reports, the aim was to evaluate sleep and behavior in Jamaican CWE and determine any association with epilepsy-related variables. Children with epilepsy were identified along with age and gender-matched controls from the University Hospital of the West Indies and the Bustamante Hospital for Children. Written informed consent was obtained followed by the completion of questionnaires assessing sleep, behavior, and background of both cases and controls. Parents of 61 children (26 cases and 35 controls) participated in the study. There was no difference in sleep scores or frequency of sleep disorders between cases and controls (p > 0.05). Children with epilepsy had worse scores than controls in peer problems (3.85 vs 2.32, p < 0.01), internal problems (7.42 vs 4.71, p < 0.01), and total behavioral problem (16.27 vs 12.09, p < 0.01). When compared with controls, CWE had a higher frequency of abnormal peer problems (66% vs 32%, p < 0.05) and emotional problems score (42% vs 15%, p < 0.05). Children with learning difficulty were three times more likely to have abnormal behavioral score Odds Ratio (OR) = 3.818, p < 0.05). Jamaican CWE have similar sleep scores to their healthy peers but have a higher frequency of peer and emotional problems.

Abstract
Children with Benign Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS), despite high likelihood for seizure remission, are reported to have subtle difficulties in language and other cognitive skills. We used functional MRI and a story listening task to examine the effect of BECTS on patterns of activation and connectivity. Language and cognitive skills were assessed using standardized measures. Twenty-four children with recently diagnosed BECTS and 40 typically-developing children participated. In a functionally-defined region of interest in right inferior frontal gyrus, BECTS patients showed a lower level of activation. Across both groups combined, increased activation in superior/middle temporal regions of interest was associated with better language scores. Connectivity in the story processing network was similar between groups, but connectivity within left inferior frontal gyrus was decreased in children with BECTS. These results suggest that language networks are largely maintained in new-onset BECTS, but some subtle changes in activation and connectivity can be observed.

Abstract
We designed a cross-sectional study to examine the association between sleep and behavior problems in toddlers and preschool-age children with epilepsy. We found that 71 (78.9%) children slept less than 10 hours in a 24-hour period according to the actigraphy, with 75 (83.3%) children waking for more than an hour during nocturnal sleep. Twenty-five (27.8%) children usually or sometimes had an inconsistent bedtime, and 24 (26.7%) did not sleep the same amount each day. Twenty-nine (32.2%) and 18 (20.0%) children had an internalizing and externalizing problem in clinical range, respectively. Sleep anxiety was significantly (p < .01) associated with increased internalizing and externalizing problems, even after the relevant epilepsy variables were controlled for. Findings from our study suggest that screening of sleep and behavior problems should be part of routine epilepsy care to identify children with problematic sleep and unrecognized sleep disorders and those at risk of behavioral dysfunction.

Abstract
Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BCECTS) is the most frequent benign focal epilepsy in childhood. Although it is described as a benign epilepsy syndrome, many studies have revealed that a significant number of patients have some degree of neuropsychological impairment. Thirty-two patients with BCECTS aged 6-11years were included in the study. All patients (without any antiepileptic or psychiatric medication) underwent all-night EEG monitoring and complex neuropsychological testing to diagnose the presence of core symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The spike index (number of spikes per minute) on awake and asleep EEG, age at seizure onset, family history of epilepsy, and perinatal risks were correlated with the results of neuropsychological testing. Of the 32 patients, 21 patients (65.6%) fulfilled the criteria for ADHD diagnosis. Children who were younger at epilepsy onset demonstrated lower IQ and higher attention deficit (P=0.004) and higher impulsivity (P=0.016). The occurence of epileptiform discharges on nocturnal EEG was positively related to higher attention deficit and higher impulsivity. The findings are discussed in terms of how interictal discharges in the centrotemporal region during sleep affect the development of cognitive functions in children during critical epochs of neuropsychological development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial and behavioral problems have been reported in children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Distinctive features of typical BECTS associated with cognitive and behavioral problems have not clearly been defined. PURPOSE We aimed to identify psychosocial and behavioral functioning and their relationship to seizure timing in BECTS. METHODS Consecutive patients with BECTS were recruited from the pediatric neurology outpatient clinic between May 2015 and May 2016. The patients were divided into two subgroups in according to seizure timing; group 1 consisted of patients with seizures only in the morning short before awakening, and group 2 consisted of patients with seizure shortly after falling asleep or in both time periods. Neuropsychological and behavioral evaluation in patients and healthy controls were examined using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised test and the Turkish version of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). RESULTS The participants comprised 46 children with BECTS and 49 healthy controls aged 7-16years. There was no significant difference between group 1, group 2, and control group regarding intelligence quantity in full-scale or verbal and performance subscales. Behavioral scores for overall stress significantly differed between group 2 and controls on the SDQ test, while group 1 and control group had no difference on the SDQ scores. CONCLUSION Patients with BECTS who have seizure shortly after falling asleep may have a tendency towards behavior difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in electroencephalogram (EEG) is diagnostic of epilepsy. Latent IEDs are activated during sleep. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) improve sleep. AEDs, sleep, and IEDs may interact and affect epilepsy management. PURPOSE To explore the occurrence of IEDs and its association with sleep and AED status in suspected patients of epilepsy. METHODS EEG records were collected of suspected patients of epilepsy who reported to the electrophysiology laboratory of a tertiary care hospital during 1 year. The anthropometric details, clinical presentations, and AED status of the patients were recorded from the EEG records. Patients were divided into 2 categories based on whether AEDs had been started prior to the EEG evaluation (category-I) or not (category-II). The occurrences of IEDs in EEG recordings in both categories were analyzed. RESULTS In 1 year, 138 patients were referred for diagnostic EEG evaluation. One-hundred-two patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria, of which 57 patients (53%) belonged to category-I and 45 patients (47%) belonged to category-II. Incidence of IEDs, suggestive of definite diagnosis of epilepsy in category-I was 88% and in category-II was 69%, and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION The increased proportion of IEDs in category-I patients may be due to high clinical suspicion or compounding interaction of AEDs and sleep. More extensive studies are required to delineate the complex interaction of AEDs, sleep, and IEDs so that judicious yet prompt management of epilepsy can be carried out.

Abstract
Background Elevated rates of affective disturbance in children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BCECTS) have been reported. However, it remains unclear how anxiety and depression are related to epilepsy, and it is unknown whether these mood disorders are influenced by the use of antiepileptic drugs. In the present report, we performed a prospective study designed to evaluate affective disorders (anxiety and depression) without the bias of antiepileptic drug treatment in 89 children with BCECTS, based on self-reporting. Furthermore, we sought to determine whether clinical factors, such as age, disease course, seizure frequency, and spike wave index (SWI), were related to the psychological profiles. Methods Patients with BCECTS (n = 89) and healthy matched controls (n = 75) were included in this study. The Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children (DSRSC) and the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) were completed by the children. Results None of the children met criteria for clinically significant anxiety or depression. However, the children with BCECTS had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores compared with children in the control group. We found no significant differences in depression or anxiety between the left, right, and bilateral lobe groups. The DSRSC scores were similar between the children with partial seizures and those with secondarily generalized seizures. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the SCARED scores between these two groups. However, the DSRSC and SCARED scores were positively correlated with age, seizure frequency, SWI, and disease course. Conclusions The children with BCECTS had an increased likelihood of depression and anxiety, and these higher rates were unrelated to seizure type or epileptic focus, but were positively correlated with age, seizure frequency, SWI, and disease course.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aims to explore the extent to which gender, epilepsy severity and illness perceptions predict fatigue and sleep problems in youngsters with epilepsy. METHOD Structured interviews were conducted in 100 young patients (Mage = 13,9, SD = 2.21; 41% girls) and data were analyzed by means of multiple hierarchical regression analyses. RESULTS Most patients (91%) were well controlled by anti-epileptics; 3% had infrequent seizures and 6% were pharmacoresistant. At a multivariate level it appeared that youngsters with epilepsy who believe that they have less personal control over their illness and who feel that the illness has a high emotional impact on their lives reported higher levels of fatigue. In addition, more sleep problems were reported by youngsters who think they have less personal control over the disease, who believe that treatment controls epilepsy and report that the disease has a high emotional impact on their lives. CONCLUSION Given the importance of illness perceptions, it is suggested that they are targets for future interventions that aim to reduce fatigue and sleep problems in youngsters with epilepsy.

Abstract
We review the evidence that BECTS may be associated with cognitive dysfunction and behavioral problems, the extent to which these problems may be associated with patterns of EEG abnormalities in BECTS, and the impact of antiepileptic medication on cognition and behavior in BECTS. A growing literature examining cognitive and behavioral outcomes suggests that children with BECTS perform below the level of their peers. Consistent with this, neuroimaging studies reveal that BECTS has an impact on structural and functional brain development, but the potential influence of frequency and lateralization of centrotemporal spikes (CTS) on cognition and behavior is not well understood. Treatment with AEDs is an option in BECTS, but existing studies have not clearly shown a clear relationship between elimination of CTS and improved cognitive or behavioral outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We use the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) routinely as a tool for evaluating children's sleep quality in our pediatric neurology clinic. We analyzed at its ability to detect sleep disturbances distinctive to selected neurological disorders. PATIENTS One-hundred and eighty-six children (age range 2-18 years) who were evaluated by the SDSC questionnaire were divided into three groups according to their principal diagnosis: epilepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or others. Their responses were analyzed. RESULTS The average frequency of abnormal total sleep score was 26.9%. The most frequent sleep disorders were excessive somnolence (25.3%), initiating and maintaining sleep (24.7%), and arousal/nightmares (23.1%). There were no significant group differences for total scores or sleep disorder-specific scores; although a sleep-wake transition disorder was more frequent among children with epilepsy (31%). A literature search revealed that the frequency of abnormal total scores in several neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, cerebral palsy) ranges between 20% and 30%. CONCLUSIONS The mechanism underlying sleep disturbances in many neurological disorders may be unrelated to that of the primary disease but rather originate from nonspecific or environmental factors (e.g., familial/social customs and habits, temperament, psychological parameters). Although the SDSC is noninformative for studying the effect of a specific neurological disorder on sleep, we still recommend its implementation for screening for sleep disturbances in children with neurological abnormalities.
