Abstract
Gerbera (Gerbera hybrida), a major fresh cut flower crop, is very susceptible to root rot disease. Although plant defensins (PDFs), a major group of plant antimicrobial peptides, display broad-spectrum antifungal and antibacterial activities, PDF genes in gerbera have not been systematically characterized. Here, we identified and cloned nine PDF genes from gerbera and divided them into two classes based on phylogenetic analysis. Most Class I GhPDF genes were highly expressed in petioles, whereas all Class II GhPDF genes were highly expressed in roots. Phytophthora cryptogea inoculation strongly upregulated all Class II GhPDF genes in roots and upregulated all Class I GhPDF genes in petioles. Transient overexpression of GhPDF1.5 and GhPDF2.4 inhibited P. cryptogea infection in tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) leaves. Transient overexpression of GhPDF2.4, but not GhPDF1.5, significantly upregulated ACO and LOX gene expression in tobacco leaves, indicating that overexpressing GhPDF2.4 activated the jasmonic acid/ethylene defense pathway and that the two types of GhPDFs have different modes of action. Prokaryotically expressed recombinant GhPDF2.4 inhibited mycelial growth and delayed the hyphal swelling of P. cryptogea, in vitro, indicating that GhPDF2.4 is a morphogenetic defensin. Moreover, the addition of GhPDF2.4 to plant culture medium alleviated the root rot symptoms of in vitro-grown gerbera seedlings and greatly reduced pathogen titer in P. cryptogea-inoculated gerbera roots in the early stages of treatment. Our study provides a basis for the use of GhPDFs, especially GhPDF2.4, for controlling root rot disease in gerbera. Abstract
This study assessed the impact of phytoremediation on reducing the residual concentration of metolachlor in soil treated with doses of 530.7 and 1061.4 g/ha and its effect on microbial biodiversity in contaminated areas. For the plant species Avena sativa and Medicago sativa, a significant efficacy of 54.5 and 36.4% was observed in the dissipation of the herbicide, especially at higher doses. Although metolachlor application reduced soil microbial biodiversity, phytoremediating plants, especially M. sativa, promoted greater richness and distribution of microbial species, mitigating the negative effects of the herbicide. Principal component analysis revealed the influence of these plants and metolachlor on the composition of the microbial community. These results highlight the importance of phytoremediation in promoting soil biodiversity and reducing herbicide contamination, providing crucial insights for remediation strategies in contaminated areas.

Abstract
A weak codon usage bias was found in Dendrobium catenatum (D. officiale) antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), after the analysis of relative synonymous codon usage, GC contents, and the effective number of codons. The codon usage preference was mainly influenced by natural selection pressure. The self-optimized prediction method and SWISS-MODEL were applied for peptide structural and domain analyses, and some typical antimicrobial domains were found in D. officinale AMP amino sequences, such as knot1 domain, gibberellins-stimulated domain, cupin_1 domain, defensin_like domain, and SLR1-BP (S locus-related glycoprotein 1 binding pollen coat protein) domain. To investigate the AMPs gene expression pattern, abiotic stresses, such as salt stress, drought stress, salicylic acid (SA), and methyl jasmonate (JA), were applied and the gene expression levels were detected by the real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results showed that, even though the basic AMPs gene expressions were low, some AMPs can still be induced by salt dress, while the drought dress did not show the same impact. The SA and JA signaling pathways might be involved in most of the AMPs expressions. The natural selection of the D. officinale AMPs and thus forming diverse types of AMPs enhanced the plant's innate immunity and disease resistance capability, which would lead to a better understanding of the molecular mechanism for D. officinale adapting to the environment. The finding that salt stress, SA, and JA signaling pathways can induce AMP expression lays a foundation for the further development and functional verification of D. officinale AMPs.

Abstract
Coronary atherosclerosis is closely related to inflammation and oxidative stress. Owing to poor biocompatibility, lack of personalized treatment, and late toxic side effects, traditional drug-eluting stent intervention, releasing antiproliferative drugs, can delay endothelial repair and cause late thrombosis. The inflammation caused by atherosclerosis results in an acidic microenvironment and oxidative stress, which can be considered as triggers for precise and intelligent treatment. Here, we used catechol hyaluronic acid (C-HA) and cystamine (Cys) to prepare C-HA-Cys hydrogel coatings by amide reaction. The H2S-releasing donor allicin was loaded in the hydrogel to form an intelligent biomimetic coating. The disulfide bond of Cys made the cross-linked network redox-responsive to the inflammation and oxidative stress in the microenvironment by releasing the drug and H2S intelligently to combat the side effects of stent implantation. This study evaluated the hemocompatibility, anti-inflammatory capacity, vascular wall cytocompatibility, and in vivo histocompatibility of this intelligent hydrogel coating. Furthermore, the effect of H2S released from the coating on atherosclerosis-related signaling pathways such as CD31 and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), CD36, and ACAT-1 was investigated. Our results indicate that the C-HA-Cys-Allicin hydrogel coating could be manufactured on the surface of vascular interventional devices to achieve a precise response to the microenvironment of the lesion to release drug, which can attain the purpose of prevention of in-stent restenosis and ensure the effectiveness and safety of the application of interventional devices.

Abstract
To study the prevention and mechanism of oat antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) on enteritis. Oat protein was hydrolyzed by alkaline protease and isolated to obtain oat antimicrobial peptides. Rat enteritis models were constructed using dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), and a blank group, a negative control group, a positive control group, and an experimental group (low dose, medium dose, and high dose) were established. Through pathological test, antioxidant test, intestinal microbial and metabolite determination, it was found that AMPS can improve the antioxidant capacity of colon, reduce the production of inflammatory cells, and have the effect of preventing enteritis. In addition, the AMPS group is able to change and reduce the abundance of Bacteroides-eggerthii-DSM-20697 and Desulfovibrionaceae, increase the abundance of probiotics such as roboutsia and Ruminococcus and optimize the diversity of intestinal microorganisms. Then, the combined analysis of microorganism and metabolites showed that Romboutsia and Ruminococcus reduced the contents of amino acid and glucose and promoted the production of phospholipid, while Bacteroides promoted the synthesis of amino acid in the body. From the above, it can be seen that DSS causes damage to the mechanical barrier of the gut. Oat antimicrobial peptides provide a microbial barrier for the gut microbes, which produce acetic acid and succinic acid with small amounts of isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, and lactic acid. The acidic metabolites produced reduce the pH of the gut and produce substances with antibacterial effects (such as lipophilic molecules, antibiotics, and hydroperoxides). Inhibit the growth and reproduction of other harmful bacteria, Vibrio desulphuris, from adhering to and colonizing the intestinal mucosa. Secreted short-chain fatty acids, such as acetate and butyric acid, maintain tight connections between the epithelial cells of the intestinal mucosa, thus protecting the mechanical barrier of the intestinal mucosa. Moreover, amino acids are converted into phospholipid metabolism through protein digestion and absorption to promote the production of phospholipid in the intestine and repair damaged cell membranes.

Abstract
In addition to the structural and storage functions of the (1,3; 1,4)-β-d-glucans (β-d-glucan), the possible protective role of this polymer under biotic stresses is still debated. The aim of this study was to contribute to this hypothesis by analyzing the β-d-glucans content, expression of related cellulose synthase-like (Csl) Cs1F6, CslF9, CslF3 genes, content of chlorophylls, and β-1,3-glucanase content in oat (Avena sativa L.) leaves infected with the commonly occurring oat fungal pathogen, Blumeria graminis f. sp. avenae (B. graminis). Its presence influenced all measured parameters. The content of β-d-glucans in infected leaves decreased in all used varieties, compared to the non-infected plants, but not significantly. Oats reacted differently, with Aragon and Vaclav responding with overexpression, and Bay Yan 2, Ivory, and Racoon responding with the underexpression of these genes. Pathogens changed the relative ratios regarding the expression of CslF6, CslF9, and CslF3 genes from neutral to negative correlations. However, changes in the expression of these genes did not statistically significantly affect the content of β-d-glucans. A very slight indication of positive correlation, but statistically insignificant, was observed between the contents of β-d-glucans and chlorophylls. Some isoforms of β-1,3-glucanases accumulated to a several-times higher level in the infected leaves of all varieties. New isoforms of β-1,3-glucanases were also detected in infected leaves after fungal infection.

Abstract
The multiple functions of peptides released from proteins have immense potential in food and health. In the past few decades, research interest in bioactive peptides of plant origin has surged tremendously, and new plant-derived peptides are continually discovered with advances in extraction, purification, and characterization technology. Plant-derived peptides are mainly extracted from dicot plants possessing bioactive functions, including antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, and antihypertensive activities. Although the distinct functions are said to depend on the composition and structure of amino acids, the practical or industrial application of plant-derived peptides with bioactive features is still a long way off. In summary, the present review mainly focuses on the state-of-the-art extraction, separation, and analytical techniques, functional properties, mechanism of action, and clinical study of plant-derived peptides. Special emphasis has been placed on the necessity of more pre-clinical and clinical trials to authenticate the health claims of plant-derived peptides.

Abstract
This work describes an environmental-friendly preparation of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous oat extract. The advanced electrochemical and optical features of green synthesized ZnONPs displayed excellent antibacterial activity and exhibited an important role in pharmaceutical determinations. The formation of nanoscale ZnO was confirmed using various spectroscopic and microscopic investigations. The formed nanoparticles were found to be around 100 nm. The as-prepared ZnONPs were monitored for their antibacterial potential against different bacterial strains. The inhibition zones for ZnONPs were found as Escherichia coli (16 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (12 mm) and Bacillus subtilis (11 mm) using a 30-µg mL-1 sample concentration. In addition, ZnONPs exhibited significant antioxidant effects, from 58 to 67%, with an average IC50 value of 0.88 ± 0.03 scavenging activity and from 53 to 71% (IC50 value of 0.73 ± 0.05) versus the scavenging free radicals DPPH and ABTS, respectively. The photocatalytic potential of ZnONPs for Rhodamine B dye degradation under UV irradiation was calculated. The photodegradation process was carried out as a function of time-dependent and complete degradation (nearly 98%), with color removal after 120 min. Conclusively, the synthesized ZnONPs using oat biomass might provide a great promise in the future for biomedical applications.

Abstract
The regulation of wheat protein quality is a highly complex biological process involving multiple metabolic pathways. To reveal new insights into the regulatory pathways of wheat glutenin synthesis, we used the grain-filling period wheat grains of the near-isogenic lines NIL-723 and NIL-1010, which have large differences in quality, to perform a combined transcriptome and proteome analysis. Compared with NIL-1010, NIL-723 had 1287 transcripts and 355 proteins with significantly different abundances. Certain key significantly enriched pathway were identified, and wheat quality was associated with alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) or Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in amino acid synthesis pathways were upregulated primarily in the glycine (Gly), methionine (Met), threonine (Thr), glutamic acid (Glu), proline (proC), cysteine (Cys), and arginine (Arg) synthesis and downregulated in the tryptophan (trpE), leucine (leuC), citrulline (argE), and ornithine (argE) synthesis. Furthermore, to elucidate changes in glutenin in the grain synthesis pathway, we plotted a regulatory pathway map and found that DEGs and DEPs in ribosomes (RPL5) and the ER (HSPA5, HYOU1, PDIA3, PDIA1, Sec24, and Sec31) may play key roles in regulating glutenin synthesis. The transcriptional validation of some of the differentially expressed proteins through real-time quantitative PCR analysis further validated the transcriptome and proteomic results.
