Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries in dancers. Following one or more severe sprains, some individuals will experience residual mechanical and functional deficits, otherwise known as chronic ankle instability (CAI). Dancers who suffer from CAI may have weaker musculature surrounding the ankle and altered landing mechanics. The purpose of this study was to compare ankle strength and saut de chat landing mechanics between dancers with and without CAI. METHODS Dancers with and without CAI, defined by the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI), participated in the study (CAI n = 8; IdFAI = 18.75 ± 5.50 points; age = 20 ± 1.5 years; training = 15.5 ± 3.5 years) (Control n = 8; IdFAI = 7.13 ± 3.40 points; age = 19 ± 0.6 years; training = 15.9 ± 2.5 years). Strength and leap landing mechanics were measured on the affected ankle for the CAI group and on the preferred landing leg of a leap for the control group. Concentric and eccentric ankle plantar flexion, and subtalar inversion and eversion strength were determined with dynamometry set at an angular velocity of 60°•s-1. Force plates and motion capture cameras were used to calculate lower extremity kinematic and kinetic data as participants performed 3 saut de chat leaps. Independent t-tests were calculated to determine differences between groups. RESULTS Compared to dancers without CAI, dancers with CAI had lower eccentric plantar flexor strength, landed with higher vertical ground reaction forces, and absorbed greater power at the knee-joint during landing. CONCLUSION Whether dancers who are weaker are more prone to injury or ankle-joint injury leads to muscular weakness is unknown. Dancers with CAI appear to lack control during leap landing while concomitantly shifting loads proximally away from the ankle-joint. We encourage dancers with and without CAI to engage in additional training that enhances ankle strength.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Describe the epidemiology of dance-related musculoskeletal injury leading to forced time-loss in elite pre-professional dancers and provide descriptive data on the prevalence concerning diagnoses, location, and injury type, stratified by gender and skill level. METHODS Retrospective cohort, over a 3-year period on a full-time pre-professional Portuguese dance school featuring 70 both gender students with a mean age of 14.87 years. A total of 110 injuries were analyzed. Non-parametric statistics were used. RESULTS The most prevalent diagnosis leading to forced time-loss in female dancers were Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), 14.29%, and Posterior Ankle Impingement Syndrome (PAIS), 7.14%, whereas in male dancers these were Hallux Sprain, 17.50%, and Lumbar Spine Joint Injuries, 7.50%. Differences were found in injuries' anatomical location between genders and in Incidence Proportion and Clinical Incidence between skill levels. 72.20% of the chronic injuries and 50.00% of the acute injuries occurred in Level III students. CONCLUSIONS With respect to forced time-loss injuries, male dancers were found to sustain more acute traumatic injuries and female dancers overuse, respectively, sprains and MTSS and PAIS. Identifying which injuries are most likely to lead to forced time-loss may be useful for helping health-care professionals in clinical decision-making and in developing more effective injury prevention and management strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The literature on hip injuries in ballet dancers was systematically evaluated to answer (1) whether the prevalence of morphological abnormalities and pathology of hip injuries in dancers differs from the general population (2) if there are any specific risk factors which contribute to a higher rate of hip injury and (3) what are the outcomes of primary and secondary intervention strategies. METHODS A systematic literature search of Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library was undertaken for all literature relating to hip injuries in ballet dancers using the PRISMA guidelines. Reference lists were also searched for relevant literature. Clinical outcome studies, prospective/retrospective case series published between 1989 and October 2021 were included. Review articles (non-original data), case reports, studies on animals as well as book chapters were excluded. RESULTS The search yielded 445 studies, of which 35 were included for final analyses after screening. This included 1655 participants, of which 1131 were females. The analyses revealed that damage at the chondrolabral junction and degenerative disease of the hip may develop at a higher rate in ballet dancers than in the general population (odds ratio > 1 in 15/18 cohorts). The intra-articular lesions were more frequently found in postero-superior region of the hip suggesting an alternative impingement mechanism. Furthermore, numerous risk factors specific for hip injury in ballet were highlighted amidst a wide body of literature which consistently reports risk factors for a more generic 'dancer vulnerability'. CONCLUSION Ballet dancers may suffer from both higher rates of chondrolabral damage and degenerative disease in their hips. In contrast to other sports, the intra-articular lesions are more frequently found in postero-superior region of the hip. Future research clarifying the prevalence of osseous abnormalities and prevention strategies in dancers may be pivotal in delaying the development of hip disease in this cohort. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Low back pain (LBP) lifetime prevalence in dancers reportedly ranges from 17% to 88%. Low back pain can have negative secondary consequences on dancers' lives and careers. Still, how LBP impacts dancer function and medical care-seeking behaviors and whether these issues differ across dance genres, is understudied. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two hundred and eight-nine ballet, modern, and hip-hop dancers and teachers (median age: 20.3 years; range: 18 to 69 years) in the United States completed an online 24-question survey assessing LBP related self-reported injury history, impact on their lives, and management strategies. We defined LBP as occurrence of acute or chronic pain in the lumbar or sacral regions of the back. RESULTS Two hundred and fifty-seven participants (88.9% of 289 total) reported at least one instance of LBP during their lifetime and 220 participants reported LBP in the prior 4 weeks. Of these 220, 72 (32.7%) had LBP severe enough to limit their activities of daily living. Of the 213 who had LBP and danced during that time, 89 (41.8%) reported that LBP limited their dancing. Pain intensity (median: 4 on a 0 to 10 scale, IQR: 3.0) and LBP prevalence were similar across dance genres. Dancers sought multiple medical professionals, most often chiropractors (n = 94, 33.8%), medical doctors (n = 77, 27.7%), and physiotherapists (n = 60, 21.6%). Ninety dancers (35.0% of those with LBP) never sought medical care. Dancers who did seek care reported higher pain intensities (median: 4, IQR: 3.8) than those who did not (median: 3, IQR: 3.0). CONCLUSION Overall, most participants did suffer from LBP. Low back pain negatively impacts dancers' everyday activities and dancing. Pain intensity and loss of function may impact care-seeking. Our findings highlight the need for all dance stakeholders to educate dancers about their health, provide resources for dancer health care, and proactively create an environment that supports injury reporting behaviors in dancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the risk of developing hip pain, cartilage defects, and retirement in hypermobile ballet dancers over 5 years. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Professional Ballet Company. PARTICIPANTS Forty ballet dancers (57.5% women) were assessed at baseline and 21 dancers at 5 years. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE Baseline evaluation of generalised joint hypermobility (GJH) (GJH = Beighton score ≥5/9). OUTCOME MEASURES Cartilage defects on hip 3T magnetic resonance imaging and pain (the Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score: HAGOS) at baseline and follow-up, hip-related injury incidence, and retirement over 5 years. RESULTS Twelve dancers retired by follow-up, none due to hip injury or GJH. At baseline, 17 (42.5%) dancers were hypermobile, 18 (45%) had cartilage defects, and 15 (37.5%) reported hip pain (HAGOS pain <100). Cartilage defect prevalence was lower in GJH (n = 1) than non-GJH dancers (n = 17, P < 0.001). Beighton scores <5/9 were predictive of cartilage defect presence at baseline, independent of age and sex (P = 0.006). At follow-up, cartilage defects progressed in 2 dancers, one was hypermobile. Baseline and follow-up HAGOS pain scores were similar in GJH and non-GJH dancers (P > 0.05 for all). Hip-related injury over 5 years was reported by a similar number of GJH (n = 7) and non-GJH dancers (n = 6, P = 0.7). Hypermobility was more prevalent in active dancers (n = 12) than dancers who retired (n = 2), independent of age, rank, and sex (P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Hypermobile dancers are at no greater risk of reporting hip pain and injury or retirement over 5 years, and cartilage defect prevalence was much lower in GJH than non-GJH dancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the deep hip external rotator (DHER) muscle (piriformis, gemelli, quadratus femoris (QF)) cross-sectional area (CSA) in dancers and athletes and evaluate the relationship between DHER size and hip pain. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Elite ballet and sport. PARTICIPANTS 33 professional ballet dancers and 33 age and sex-matched athletes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES CSAs of piriformis, gemelli and QF on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Hip pain scored with the Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS): Hip pain was categorised as 'yes' if HAGOS pain score was <100, 'no' if HAGOS pain was = 100. RESULTS Estimated marginal mean CSA of piriformis, gemelli and QF muscles was similar in athletes and dancers (p > 0.05), and CSAs were not associated with hip pain. Male and female dancers had similar sized DHER muscles. In athletes, CSA of piriformis was 55% (p = 0.02, Cohen's d(95%CI) = 0.98 (0.26,1.71)) and the gemelli were 34% (p = 0.03, Cohen's d(95%CI) = 0.98 (0.26,1.70)) larger in men than women; QF was 36% larger (p = 0.08, Cohen's d(95%CI) = 0.77 (0.06,1.48)). CONCLUSION Although ballet dancers perform in external rotation, their DHER are no larger than athletes and muscle size was not associated with hip pain.

Abstract
Objectives This study examines the incidence of ankle injuries and identifies ankle injury risk among contemporary preprofessional dancers. Methods A total of 91 first-year contemporary preprofessional dancers were prospectively followed during one academic year. Self-reported ankle injuries, assessed with the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre questionnaire, were categorised as all complaint ankle injuries, substantial ankle injuries or time-loss ankle injuries. In addition, ankle injuries leading to medical attention were included. Regression analyses were used to determine the association between potential risk factors (dancer characteristics, history of ankle injury in the previous year, ankle range of motion and dorsiflexion) and ankle injuries. Results The 1-year ankle injury incidence proportion was 18.7% (n=17), 8.8% (n=8), 15.4% (n=14) and 7.7% (n=7), respectively, for all complaint ankle injuries, ankle injuries requiring medical attention, time-loss injuries and substantial injuries. Being male (OR=0.27; 95% CI 0.09 to 0.75) and being a student of the Bachelors in Dance and Education (OR=0.27; 95% CI 0.08 to 0.97) were univariately associated with a lower risk of an ankle injury. Conclusion Almost 20% of first-year preprofessional dancers reported an ankle injury, with more than 80% of the dancers reporting that their injury leads to dance time loss. Males and students of the bachelors in dance and education were at lower risk of ankle injuries. As ankle injuries are common among dancers, studies with larger sample sizes, a more heterogeneous population (eg, different dance styles) and longer follow-up periods are necessary to evaluate the impact of ankle injuries in further detail.

Abstract
Background Low back pain is believed to be a common complaint among dancers; however, a comparison across recent research is needed to support or disprove this assertion across genres. Purpose To determine the prevalence of low back pain and low back injury in ballet, modern, and hip-hop dancers through a systematic literature review. A secondary goal was to identify trends amongst dance genres, level of mastery, gender, and age, if possible. Study Design Systematic Review of the Literature. Methods PRISMA search strategy of terms relating to dance and low back pain was conducted within the Pubmed, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and the archives of the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science databases between November 2017 and March 2018. Inclusion criteria were published articles that addressed low back pain or injury in ballet, modern, or hip-hop dance population. Exclusion criteria included studies relating to specific pathologies or studies that did not report specific dance genre. All included articles were assessed for quality using a modified grading evaluation and a Modified Newcastle-Ottawa Risk of Bias assessment. Results Twenty-five ballet articles, five modern, and three hip-hop articles met the inclusion criteria, for a total of 33 articles. Twenty-five of the 33 studies relied on a questionnaire to gather data. Risk of bias results ranged from 3-7/10 and quality of studies ranged from Good I to Limited III. Prevalence of low back pain seems relatively high in ballet dance (range: 20.3%-79% of total dancers are affected). Little research exists on the prevalence of back pain in modern or hip-hop dancers, but hip-hop dancers also seem likely to have low back pain (range: 46.6%-85.7% of total dancers are affected). Low back injuries are also present in ballet (range: 2.1%-88% of total injuries), modern (range: 8.6%-21.6% of total injuries), and hip-hop (range: 26.3%-69.6%). Conclusion Ballet dancers seem to be at risk for low back pain or injury independent of gender, age or level of mastery; however, there is not enough evidence to draw any conclusions about modern dancers or hip-hop dancers and their risk for low back pain/injury currently. Future higher-level studies are needed with reduced risk of bias. Level of Evidence 2a.

Abstract
Aiming to follow the prevalence of patellofemoral pain (PFP) among young dancers over 2-years, and to assess the prevalence of re-injured/recovered dancers; 67 dancers (aged 12.8 ± 0.5) were screened for PFP at baseline, 65 dancers at 1st follow-up and 51 dancers at 2nd follow-up. All dancers (46) that took part in all the 3 screenings had at least one episode of PFP along the screenings. No dancers recovered in the 1st follow-up, yet 40.5% of the dancers with PFP at the 1st follow-up recovered in the 2nd follow-up. Along the 3 screenings, 23.9%, 34.8%, and 41.3% of the dancers had 1,2 or 3 PFP episodes, respectively. None of the dancers skipped PFP along the 3 screenings. A high prevalence of dancers had sustained PFP along the 2 follow-ups, with low recovery rate. Dancers and teachers should be alert to the need for devising modifications of training and injury prevention strategies from young age.

Abstract
Background The balance between self- and social identity on job value of Korean dance artists, considered as performing artists, was measured to investigate the relationship between balance and depressive symptoms. Methods Data of 139 dance artists were analyzed for depressive symptoms assessed by their responses to questionnaires from the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD) translated into Korean. The balance score of each aspect of social identity compared to that of self-identity on job value was measured and classified as lower, equal, or higher. Following a graphical approach, we performed locally weighted scatterplot smoothing algorithm, simple linear regression, and quadric equation regression. Results The mean of CESD was highest in the higher balance group and lowest in the lower balance group. There was a linear relationship between balance score and CESD regarding specific audience, unspecified audience, and unspecified public. Balance score showed no association with other aspects of social identity. In the balance score range of 1 or higher, it was associated with CESD with respect to artist colleague, unspecified audience, and unspecified public. Conclusions Dance artists should maintain a balance between self- and social identity in job value to prevent depressive symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION preprofessional dance training starts at very early ages, on a highly demanding environment placing students at significant risk for injury. Injury management and prevention are a matter of concern. Given the constant interchangeability of risk factors, identifying injury patterns may prove to be equally as important. Data looking back from the time of injury through context-specific approaches are missing. OBJECTIVES To identify activity-related injury patterns based on prediagnostic data. METHODS Prospective, non-randomized, observational study, over a 3 years period on a full-time preprofessional dance school featuring both gender students aged 9-21 years old. Non-parametric statistics were used. RESULTS A total of 625 dance injury records from 209 students, n = 68 males and n = 141 females, were analyzed. Season injury risk probability was identified, proving different for each skill level (SkL). Multiple individual injuries revealed a trend toward prevalence rates in advanced level, while index injuries incidence becomes more noticeable in entry level students. Overall incidence rates had no significant differences within SkL. Anatomical location was in line with previous research, although differences were found between gender and SkL. Most injuries occurred in classes, with jumps standing out as the main motor action associated with injury symptoms of gradual onset mechanism. CONCLUSION Dance injuries happen because of dance practice. Knowing the context of injury history from the injured dancer perspective is determinant for management and prevention. prediagnostic data are an umbrella term encompassing several aspects of injury background and represents fertile ground for research. Context-specific methodological approaches are recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify whether a physical examination for patello-femoral pain (PFP) is related to ultrasonography findings at the knee, and to identify possible factors related to PFP in young dancers. METHODS Sixty-seven young female dancers (7th grade, aged 12.8 ± 0.5) from three schools with identical special dance programs were included in the study. All the dancers were interviewed for demographic details, dance background, and training intensity; were evaluated for anthropometric measurements; underwent physical examination of both knees for PFP and for knee range of motion (ROM); and, had ultrasonography assessment for pathologies and of anatomical parts of their knees. RESULTS PFP was found in 54.5% of the 134 knees physically examined. In ultrasonography assessment, infra-articular effusion was found in 46.2% of the knees examined. H/week of dance practice was significantly higher among dancers with PFP (in both knees) compared with dancers with no PFP (p < .05). Knees with PFP had a significantly higher prevalence of intra articular effusion (p = .018) and higher prevalence of genu-recurvatum (p = .042). Knees with PFP had significantly greater growth plate width-anterior tibial tuberosity (p = .022) and a greater bony trochlear groove angle (p = .048). CONCLUSION This study describes the relationship between physical examination for PFP and the sonographic findings, and the factors related to knee injuries. The results showed a high prevalence of PFP and intra articular knee effusion among young dancers at the age of 12-13 years; and, that the number of hours of practice and anatomical structure are related to PFP. Our results should alert physicians, physiotherapists, athletic trainers and dance teachers to the need for devising modifications of training and injury prevention strategies from a young age (<12 years old).
