Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) progresses silently, highlighting the importance of early prevention. This pilot study aimed to examine the relationship between thermal habits-specifically hot-tub bathing-and biomarkers of chronic inflammation, as well as arterial stiffness in young adults. RESULTS Twenty-five participants were included: 9 males (mean age: 21.78 ± 2.05 years) and 16 females (mean age: 21.0 ± 0.97 years). We assessed hot bathing habits and measured plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). IL-6 levels were significantly lower among habitual hot-tub bathers (p = 0.04 overall; p = 0.018 in females). In females, hsCRP tended to be lower with immersion bathing (p = 0.08). No significant differences were observed in hsCRP, HSP70, or baPWV in the overall, male, or female groups. In females, IL-6 negatively correlated with ABI (ρ = -0.543, p = 0.03), and baPWV negatively correlated with bathing duration (ρ = -0.562, p = 0.045). These findings suggest that habitual hot-tub bathing, a culturally embedded and easily implemented habit in Japan, may serve as a lifestyle intervention to reduce inflammation and support ASCVD prevention in young adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE β-carotene, a vitamin A precursor is reported to inhibit molecular pathways cardinal to pathogenesis of fibrotic tissue alterations and in this study, the effectiveness of 14 days oral administration of β-carotene (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg/day) in the cardiac fibrosis (CF) in rats was studied and explored the mechanisms through network pharmacology. METHODS CF was induced by isoproterenol (ISO) 6 mg/kg/SC from day 1 to day 7. Losartan (LOS) 10 mg/kg/day/p.o. served as the standard. Both β-carotene and LOS were administered from day 1 to 14. On the 15th day, ECG and blood pressure (systolic, diastolic and mean) were recorded in the anesthetized rats followed by their euthanasia. The extent of cardiac fibrosis in the isolated hearts was determined using heart coefficient, tissue levels of hydroxyproline, histological examination. The oxidative stress in cardiac tissue was estimated, as GSH, SOD, catalase, MDA and NO. β-carotene targeted proteins pathway, process, and functional enrichment analysis were explored through network pharmacology. RESULTS β-carotene dose-dependently mitigated the biochemical and histological changes induced by ISO in heart tissues. In ECG, it restored ST height, QT, and QRS intervals. Additionally, it normalized systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures. The reduction in heart coefficient suggests β-carotene's potential to inhibit collagen deposition in heart tissue. β-carotene normalized oxidative stress markers, and hydroxyproline levels. All other biochemical parameters were restored to normal levels with β-carotene treatment. β-carotene 40 mg/kg dose showed comparable effect to that of LOS 10 mg/kg. β-carotene modulated IL-17, TNF, NF-kappa B, HIF-1, Sphingolipid, Relaxin, Adipocytokine, cAMP, Toll-like receptor, MAPK, PI3K-Akt, cGMP-PKG, VEGF, Ras, and PPAR signaling pathways. CONCLUSIONS β-carotene dose-dependently protects against ISO-induced CF in rats, with 40 mg/kg as an effective antifibrotic dose.

Abstract
In this cross-sectional study, we explored the influence of Mediterranean Diet (MD) adherence and physical activity-related energy expenditure on weight status and cardiometabolic risk in a large sample of 2.833 young, middle-aged and older adults. A food frequency questionnaire was employed, and MD Score to assess MD adherence. Physical activity-related energy expenditure was reported through the Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire. Anthropometry, blood pressure, lipid and glycaemic markers were measured. Most of the participants were overweight or obese and had a medium-high MD adherence. The obesity group showed lower energy expenditure and a greater clustered cardiometabolic risk. Overweight and obese had a greater clustered cardiometabolic risk compared to the high MD adherence and normo-weight. Obese showed the greatest clustered cardiometabolic risk with independence of MD adherence. Increasing energy expenditure through physical activity better than restrictive diets might be one of the key components for reducing cardiometabolic risk among obese people.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accurately predicting the 10-year risk of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is crucial for timely intervention and management. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of six anthropometric indices in assessing the 10-year ASCVD risk. Methods Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (1999-2018), the study involved 11,863 participants after applying exclusion criteria. Six anthropometric indices-waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and waist-to-height0.5 ratio (WHT.5R)-were calculated. The 10-year ASCVD risk was assessed using the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines & pooled cohort equations model. Participants were divided into two groups based on an ASCVD risk threshold of 7.5%. Statistical analysis included chi-square tests, odds ratios, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results The study found significant differences in baseline characteristics between participants with ASCVD risk less than 7.5% and those with a risk greater than or equal to 7.5%, stratified by gender. In both male and female groups, individuals with higher ASCVD risk exhibited higher age, waist circumference, BMI, and a higher prevalence of health-compromising behaviors. ABSI emerged as the most accurate predictor of ASCVD risk, with the highest area under the curve (AUC) values in both genders. The optimal cut-off values for ABSI was established for effective risk stratification (cut-off value = 0.08). Conclusion The study underscores the importance of anthropometric indices, particularly ABSI, in predicting the 10-year risk of ASCVD. These findings suggest that ABSI, along with other indices, can be instrumental in identifying individuals at higher risk for ASCVD, thereby aiding in early intervention and prevention strategies.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and diabetes are a significant public health problem worldwide. Although several novel pharmacological treatments to reduce the progression of CVDs have been discovered during the last 20 years, the better way to contain the onset of CVDs remains prevention. In this regard, nutraceuticals seem to own a great potential in maintaining human health, exerting important protective cardiovascular effects. In the last years, there has been increased focus on identifying natural compounds with cardiovascular health-promoting effects and also to characterize the molecular mechanisms involved. Although many review articles have focused on the individual natural compound impact on cardiovascular diseases, the aim of this manuscript was to examine the role of the most studied nutraceuticals, such as resveratrol, cocoa, quercetin, curcumin, brassica, berberine and Spirulina platensis, on different CVDs.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of high blood pressure (HBP) in adolescents of the Valencian Autonomous Community (VC) in Spain. Besides, its association with other risk factors related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) or arterial hypertension (AHT) in order to increase our knowledge of public health and to provide advice about healthy diets. We conducted a multicentre, observational, cross-sectional, epidemiological study in a sample of 4402 adolescents from 15 schools during the 2015-2016 school year. The participants were aged between 11 and 18 years, and any individuals already diagnosed with AHT were excluded. In addition to the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A), Evaluation of the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED), a lifestyle habits survey, the waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), and body mass index (BMI) were calculated for each participant. Informed Consent was obtained from Parents of the adolescents involved in the current study. The study received approval from the University ethics committee and all procedures were conducted in accordance with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. Chi-squared, Student t-tests, and ANOVA statistical analyses showed that 653 (14.8%) adolescents had previously undiagnosed HBP and that was significantly associated with male sex (p < 0.001), age over 15 years (p < 0.05), and height, weight, waist circumference, WtHR, BMI, and skipping breakfast. Based on the data we obtained in this study, the modifiable factors that influence HBP in adolescents were WtHR, BMI, and skipping breakfast.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, whose progression and stability are modulated, among other factors, by an innate and adaptive immune response. Prodiginines are bacterial secondary metabolites with antiproliferative and immunomodulatory activities; however, their effect on the progression or vulnerability of atheromatous plaque has not been evaluated. This study assessed the therapeutic potential of prodigiosin and undecylprodigiosin on inflammatory marker expression and atherosclerosis. An in vitro and in vivo study was carried out. Migration, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake and angiogenesis assays were performed on cell types involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. In addition, male LDL receptor null (Ldlr-/-) C57BL/6J mice were treated with prodigiosin or undecylprodigiosin for 28 days. Morphometric analysis of atherosclerotic plaques, gene expression of atherogenic factors in the aortic sinus and serum cytokine quantification were performed. The treatments applied had slight effects on the in vitro tests performed, highlighting the inhibitory effect on the migration of SMCs (smooth muscle cells). On the other hand, although no significant difference in atherosclerotic plaque progression was observed, gene expression of IL-4 and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (Ccl2) was downregulated. In addition, 50 µg/Kg/day of both treatments was sufficient to inhibit circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in serum. These results suggested that prodigiosin and undecylprodigiosin modulated inflammatory markers and could have an impact in reducing atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed at assessing knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors and prevention, among hypertensive patients in a developing country setting with high cardiometabolic disease morbidity and mortality. METHODS Using descriptive cross-sectional study design and random sampling method, a 30-item questionnaire was used to obtain quantitative data on knowledge of key aspects of cardiovascular disease and practice of preventive measures among hypertensive patients in Calabar. RESULT Two hundred and twelve (212) respondents were surveyed with mean age of 45.5 ± 10.8 years. Approximately two-thirds of respondents (67.9%) had unsatisfactory level of knowledge of CVD. Most respondents had unsatisfactory level of knowledge of appropriate diet (77.4%), basic epidemiology (80.2%), risk factors (63.2%), and symptoms of CVD (74.5%). The mean score for knowledge of risk factors was significantly higher among females compared with males (p < 0.05). Consumers compared with non-consumers of alcohol had significantly lower mean scores for knowledge of appropriate diet and symptoms of CVD (p < 0.05). Except for medical knowledge where mean score of knowledge was significantly higher among respondents occasionally exercised or consumed fresh fruits compared with other groups, there was no significant difference in mean score of knowledge for other components comparing the various categories of active exercise and consumption of fresh fruits (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Unsatisfactory level of knowledge of cardiovascular disease among hypertensive patients in the study setting was high. There is urgent need to improve efforts and strategies for health education and counseling of patients toward sustainable adoption of preventive behaviors.

Abstract
Early detection and easy continuous monitoring of emerging or re-emerging infectious, contagious or other diseases are of particular interest for controlling healthcare advances and developing effective medical treatments to reduce the high global cost burden of diseases in the backdrop of lack of awareness regarding advancing diseases. Under an ever-increasing demand for biosensor design reliability for early stage recognition of infectious agents or contagious diseases and potential proteins, nanoscale manufacturing designs had developed effective nanodynamic sensing assays and compact wearable devices. Dynamic developments of biosensor technology are also vital to detect and monitor advanced diseases, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), diabetes, cancers, liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), tuberculosis, and central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In particular, nanoscale biosensor designs have indispensable contribution to improvement of health concerns by early detection of disease, monitoring ecological and therapeutic agents, and maintaining high safety level in food and cosmetics. This review reports an overview of biosensor designs and their feasibility for early investigation, detection, and quantitative determination of many advanced diseases. Biosensor strategies are highlighted to demonstrate the influence of nanocompact and lightweight designs on accurate analyses and inexpensive sensing assays. To date, the effective and foremost developments in various nanodynamic designs associated with simple analytical facilities and procedures remain challenging. Given the wide evolution of biosensor market requirements and the growing demand in the creation of early stage and real-time monitoring assays, precise output signals, and easy-to-wear and self-regulating analyses of diseases, innovations in biosensor designs based on novel fabrication of nanostructured platforms with active surface functionalities would produce remarkable biosensor devices. This review offers evidence for researchers and inventors to focus on biosensor challenge and improve fabrication of nanobiosensors to revolutionize consumer and healthcare markets.

Abstract
Current improvement strategies for the control of cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) in Europe are based on quality management policies. With the aim of understanding the effect of interventions delivered by primary healthcare systems, we evaluated the impact of clinical governance on cardiovascular health after ten years of implementation in Catalonia. A cohort study that included 1878 patients was conducted in 19 primary care centres (PCCs). Audits that comprised 13 cardiovascular health indicators were performed and general practitioners received periodic (annual, biannual or monthly) feedback about their clinical practice. We evaluated improvement in screening, diagnosis and control of the main CRFs and the effects of the feedback on cardiovascular risk (CR), incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, comparing baseline data with data at the end of the study (after a 10-year follow-up). The impact of the intervention was assessed globally and with respect to feedback frequency. General improvement was observed in screening, percentage of diagnoses and control of CRFs. At the end of the study, few clinically significant differences in CRFs were observed between groups. However, the reduction in CR was greater in the group receiving high frequency feedback, specifically in relation to smoking and control of diabetes and cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)). A protective effect of having a cardiovascular event (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.44-0.94) or death (HR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.35-0.88) was observed in patients from centres where general practitioners received high frequency feedback. Additionally, these PCCs presented improved cardiovascular health indicators and lower incidence and mortality by CVD, illustrating the impact of this intervention.

The present survey describes the state-of-the-art techniques for dynamic cardiac magnetic resonance image reconstruction. Additionally, clinical relevance, main challenges, and future trends of this image modality are outlined. Thus, this paper aims to provide a general vision about cine MRI as the standard procedure in functional evaluation of the heart, focusing on technical methodologies.

Abstract
Objective: to evaluate the effect and gender differences of an innovative intervention
involving in-person and telephone nursing counseling to control cardiovascular
risk factors (arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and overweight), improve
health-related quality of life and strengthen self-efficacy and social support in
persons using the municipal health centers' cardiovascular health program. Method: a randomized controlled clinical trial involving participants randomized into the
intervention group who received traditional consultation plus personalized and
telephone nursing counseling for 7 months (n = 53) and the control group (n = 56).
The study followed the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials Statement. Results: women in the intervention group presented a significant increase in the physical
and mental health components compared to the control group, with decreases in
weight, abdominal circumference, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein
cholesterol, and the atherogenic index. The effects attributable to the
intervention in the men in the intervention group were increased physical and
emotional roles and decreased systolic and diastolic pressure, waist
circumference, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, atherogenic
index, cardiovascular risk factor, and 10-year coronary risk. Conclusion: this intervention is an effective strategy for the control of three
cardiovascular risk factors and the improvement of health-related quality of
life.

Abstract
Little is known regarding the effects of environmental lead exposure on cardiovascular risk factors in the adolescent population. We studied 11,662 subjects included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2012. Blood lead levels were analysed for their association with cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF). Regression coefficients (Beta) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of blood lead in association with CVRF (e.g., total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting glucose, glycohemoglobin, fasting insulin, and blood pressure) were estimated using multivariate and generalized linear regression after adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, serum cotinine, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and household income. We identified a strong positive association between blood lead (coefficient = 0.022, 95% CI 0.003, 0.041; P = 0.022) and LDL-cholesterol in adolescents (age 12–19 years). However, no associations with other CVRFs were found in the overall population. In the generalized linear models, participants with the highest lead levels demonstrated a 1.87% (95% CI 0.73%, 3.02%) greater increase in serum LDL-cholesterol (p for trend = 0.031) when compared to participants with the lowest lead levels. These results provide epidemiological evidence that low levels of blood lead are positively associated with LDL-cholesterol in the adolescent population.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently the leading cause of mortality in the world, and it is estimated that 80% of the disease burden is encountered in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While numerous wake-up calls have been issued in the recent years to face this emerging epidemic, little has been achieved. One particularly deficient area is cardiac surgery. This article aims to address the challenges and barriers to establishing cardiac surgery programs in LMICs and some of the existing efforts to overcome them, focusing on a center in Aswan, Egypt, as an example.
