Abstract
Light-mediated therapeutics, including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy and light-triggered drug delivery, have been widely studied due to their high specificity and effective therapy. However, conventional light-mediated therapies usually depend on the activation of light-sensitive molecules with UV or visible light, which have poor penetration in biological tissues. Over the past decade, efforts have been made to engineer nanosystems that can generate luminescence through excitation with near-infrared (NIR) light, ultrasound or X-ray. Certain nanosystems can even carry out light-mediated therapy through chemiluminescence, eliminating the need for external activation. Compared to UV or visible light, these 4 excitation modes penetrate more deeply into biological tissues, triggering light-mediated therapy in deeper tissues. In this review, we systematically report the design and mechanisms of different luminescent nanosystems excited by the 4 excitation sources, methods to enhance the generated luminescence, and recent applications of such nanosystems in deep tissue light-mediated therapeutics.

Abstract
The monitoring of Pb as a hazardous heavy metal element for the environment and human health is of high importance. In this study, a simple and sensitive chemiluminescence (CL) probe based on sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) was designed for the determination of Pb2+ . To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the analytical application of the CL method based on SQDs. For this purpose, SQDs were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method and characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS and X-ray diffraction. Then, the direct chemiluminescence (CL) of SQDs elicited by common oxidants was investigated. The highest CL intensity was observed for the SQDs-KMnO4 reaction, and its CL mechanism was studied. We indicated that the CL intensity of introduced system can be diminished as a result of interaction between Pb2+ and SQDs, and exploited this fact for designing a CL-based probe for the determination of Pb2+ . The CL intensity of SQDs-KMnO4 reaction was linearly quenched by Pb2+ at the range of 50 to 2000 nM with a limit of detection as 16 nM (S/N=3). The probe was employed for the determination of Pb2+ in different water samples and the recovery results (95.2 to 102.8%) indicated the good analytical performance of the developed method.

Abstract
Biomass derived carbon dots (CD) have been observed to be excellent bioimaging probes due to their nontoxic, stable fluorescence, lesser bleachability, and excellent bioconjugation properties. In the current study, green chili extract derived CD synthesis via microwave irradiation is reported. The time dependent top down degradation of carbonaceous materials to CD are monitored via electron microscopy and correlated with fluorescence intensity. Further, the CD were explored for long-term cell tracking and cell therapy monitoring in a rodent model to study wound healing kinetics. The cells were monitorable up to 21 days (until the entire wound healed). CD were observed to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitro and in vivo and provided control over ROS scavenging enzyme gene expressions via down regulation. Further, it was observed to remodel the wound healing kinetics via altering granulation tissue distribution and formation of microvessels to establish the capability of CD to enhance wound healing.

Abstract
Carbon nanodots (CNDs) have attracted great attention due to their superior solubility, biocompatibility, tunable photoluminescence, and opto-electronic properties. This work describes a new fluorescence-based spectroelectrochemistry approach to simultaneously study the photoluminescence and wavelength dependent photocurrent of microwave synthesized CNDs. The fluorescence of CNDs shows selective quenching upon a reversible redox couple, ferricyanide/ferrocyanide, reaction during cyclic voltammetry. The CND modified gold slide electrode demonstrates wavelength dependent photocurrent generation during the fluorescence-electrochemical study, suggesting the potential application of CNDs in photoelectronics. UV-Vis absorption and electrochemistry are used to quantify the energy gap of the CNDs, and then to calibrate a Hückel model for CNDs' electronic energy levels. The Hückel (or tight binding) model treatment of an individual CND as a molecule combines the conjugated π states (C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) with the functional groups (C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, C-O, and COOH) associated with the surface electronic states. This experimental and theoretical investigation of CNDs provides a new perspective on the optoelectronic properties of CNDs and should aid in their development for practical use in biomedicine, chemical sensing, and photoelectric devices.

Abstract
Herein, a broad overview concerning the most recent progress of carbon dots (CDs) in chemiluminescence (CL) as well as the mechanisms and applications are presented. CDs have excellent optical and electronic properties and are very important advancement in the fast growing domain of nanotechnology. CDs enhance the ultraweak CL of different systems. The mechanisms and applications of these enhanced CL reactions are discussed. It is worthy to note that CDs participate in CL reactions as catalysts, energy acceptors or are directly involved in redox reactions with radicals in CL systems. Sometimes, these processes taking place simultaneously to enhance CL intensity. In this report, recent advances in CD based CL are comprehensively summarized and their applications in detection of various reagents and biological molecules are reviewed. The challenges and future prospects of this field are also discussed.

Abstract
Here we report a novel solid-state ECL sensor for ultrasensitive sensing of glutathione (GSH) based on ferrocyanide-ferricyanide redox couple (Fe(CN)6(3-/4-)) induced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) amplification of carbon dots (C-dots). The electropolymerization of C-dots and (11-pyrrolyl-1-yl-undecyl) triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (A2) enabled immobilization of the hydrophilic C-dots on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) perfectly, while the excellent conductivity of polypyrrole was exploited to accelerate electron transfer between them. The Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) can expeditiously convert the C-dots and S2O8(2-) to C-dot(•-) and SO4(•-), respectively. High yields of the excited state C-dots (C-dots*) were obtained, and a ∼10-fold ECL amplification was realized. The C-dots* obtained through the recombination of electron-injected and hole-injected processes may be impeded due to the interference of GSH to K2S2O8. Therefore, the constructed sensor for GSH showed a detection limit down to 54.3 nM (S/N = 3) and a wide linear range from 0.1-1.0 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.997.
