Abstract
A magnetic hydrogel based on xylan (X), poly (acrylic acid), and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) named HXA-Fe2O3 was synthesized, characterized, and applied as an alternative material to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media by adsorption. Maghemite was synthesized by coprecipitation method and later incorporated in the hydrogel matrix synthesized by free radical polymerization. The characterization studies included FTIR, DSC, XRD, VSM, Zeta Potential, TGA, SEM, TEM, and N2 adsorption isotherms (BET). The physicochemical characterization results confirmed the intended synthesis and showed the compositional, thermal, structural, morphological, textural, and magnetic profile of the materials. The adsorption studies included experimental design, kinetic, and isotherm. A full factorial design was employed considering the factors adsorbent dosage (g L-1), pH, and ionic strength (mmol L-1 of NaCl) for adsorption capacity and removal percentage responses. As ionic strength was not significant, a Doehlert design was employed with adsorbent dosage and pH, indicating the optimal adsorption conditions. The kinetics was well described by the PSO model, while the isotherm obeyed the Sips model. Equilibrium was attained at 60 min, and the maximum experimental adsorption capacity was up to 250.26 mg g-1 at pH 8.5, adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g L-1, and 298 K. These findings show that the magnetic hydrogel produced has great potential to be applied in the adsorption of basic molecules, such as MB.

Abstract
Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are sub-class of perfluoroalkyl substances commonly detected in water matrices. They are persistent in the environment, hence highly toxic to living organisms. Their occurrence at trace amount, complex nature and prone to matrix interference make their extraction and detection a challenge. This study consolidates current advancements in solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques for the trace-level analysis of PFCAs from water matrices. The advantages of the methods in terms of ease of applications, low-cost, robustness, low solvents consumption, high pre-concentration factors, better extraction efficiency, good selectivity and recovery of the analytes have been emphasized. The article also demonstrated effectiveness of some porous materials for the adsorptive removal of the PFCAs from the water matrices. Mechanisms of the SPE/adsorption techniques have been discussed. The success and limitations of the processes have been elucidated.

Application of Functionalized Fe 3O 4 Magnetic Nanoparticles Using CTAB and SDS for Oil Separation from Oil-in-Water Nanoemulsions. LANGMUIR : THE ACS JOURNAL OF SURFACES AND COLLOIDS 2023. Abstract
Using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for emulsified oil separation from wastewater is becoming increasingly widespread. This study aims to synthesize MNPs using amphiphilic coatings to stabilize the MNPs and prevent their agglomeration for efficiently breaking oil-in-water nanoemulsions. We coat two different sizes of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (15-20 and 50-100 nm) using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with surfactant-to-MNP mass ratios of 0.4 and 0.8. We study the effect of various variables on the demulsification performance, including the MNP size and concentration, coating materials, and MNP loading. Based on the oil-water separation analysis, the smaller size MNPs (MNP-S) show a better demulsification performance than the larger ones (MNP-L ) for a 1000 ppm dodecane-in-water emulsion containing nanosized oil droplets (250-300 nm). For smaller MNPs (MNP-S) and at low dosage level of 0.5 g/L, functionalizing with surfactant-to-MNP mass ratio of 0.4, the functionalization increases the separation efficiency (SE) from 57.5% for bare MNP-S to 86.1% and 99.8 for the SDS and CTAB coatings, respectively. The highest SE for MNP-S@CTAB and the zeta potential measurements imply that electrostatic attraction between negatively charged oil droplets (-55.9 ± 2.44 mV) and positively charged MNP-S@CTAB (+35.8 ± 0.34 mV) is the major contributor to a high SE. Furthermore, the reusability tests for MNP-S@CTAB reveal that after 10 cycles, the amount of oil adsorption capacity decreases slightly, from 20 to 19 mg/g, indicating an excellent stability of synthesized nanoparticles. In conclusion, functionalized MNPs with tailored functional groups feature a high oil SE that could be effectively used for oil separation from emulsified oily wastewater streams.

Abstract
Many environmental pollutants caused by uncontrolled urbanization and rapid industrial growth have provoked serious concerns worldwide. These pollutants, including toxic metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, and petroleum hydrocarbons, unenviably compromise the water quality and manifest a severe menace to aquatic entities and human beings. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to acquaint bio-nanocomposites with the capability to remove and decontaminate this extensive range of emerging pollutants. Recently, considerable emphasis has been devoted to developing low-cost novel materials obtained from natural resources accompanied by minimal toxicity to the environment. One such component is cellulose, naturally the most abundant organic polymer found in nature. Given bio-renewable sources, natural abundance, and impressive nanofibril arrangement, cellulose-reinforced composites are widely engineered and utilized for multiple applications, such as wastewater decontamination, energy storage devices, drug delivery systems, paper and pulp industries, construction industries, and adhesives, etc. Environmental remediation prospective is among the fascinating application of these cellulose-reinforced composites. This review discusses the structural attributes of cellulose, types of cellulose fibrils-based nano-biocomposites, preparatory techniques, and the potential of cellulose-based composites to remediate a diverse array of organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract
The environmental pollution by toxic Co(II) ions had a negative impact on living organisms and water resources. The amorphous Zr-Ca-Mg and Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates with varied Zr and Ti content with the mesoporous structure (ABET = 19-232 m2/g, Vdes. = 0.075-0.370 cm3/g, Ddes. = 6.2-10.9 nm) were synthesized. The effect of adsorbent chemical composition, the presence of competing ions (0.1-1.0 M NaCl and 0.01-0.1 M CaCl2 backgrounds), and pH (3.0-7.0) of aqueous solution on adsorption removal of Co(II) ions by Zr-Ca-Mg and Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates was studied. The highest adsorption capacity of Zr-Ca-Mg-1 and Ti-Ca-Mg-1 samples reached 253.3 and 212.8 mg/g. The prepared adsorbents demonstrated high efficiency at pH in the range of 3.0-7.0 and the presence of 0.1-1.0 M NaCl and seawater with a salinity of 35.0 g/L backgrounds. The chemisorption and ion-exchange mechanisms of Co(II) ions removal for Zr-Ca-Mg and Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates were proposed. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted with Sips and Langmuir models that proved the heterogeneous nature of adsorption sites as well as assumed the monolayer adsorption that occurs at specific homogeneous sites within the adsorbent without any interaction between the adsorbed substances. The kinetic data was well described by the pseudo-second-order model that is suitable for chemisorption processes as liming adsorption stage. The presented results shown the prospects of developed adsorbents for the investigation of real wastewater treatment from heavy metal ions and liquid radioactive waste purification.

Abstract
The synthesis and application of magnetic nanosorbents to remove emerging pollutants have been considered the best environmental remediation and sustainability option. Incorporating magnetism shortens the treatment time and allows the sorbent to be recovered quickly using external magnetic with many cycles. The implementation of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) using magnetic materials of different shapes, sizes, and surface morphology can be a valuable tool in applying materials to prepare analytical samples. In MSPE applications, materials with strong magnetic domain can be used as precursors for constructing magnetic composite as a promising sorbent. This article focuses on the most recent and exceptional applications of magnetic adsorbents for preconcentration and removal purposes. Magnetic adsorbents, such as nanoparticles (NPs), foam, sponges, nanocomposites, hydrogels, and beads with multifunctional attributes have been comprehensively studied in terms of preparation procedures, limitations, advantages, and interactions between pollutants and magnetic composites. The role of magnetic sorbents in sample preparation methods, such as simple solid-phase extraction and microextraction, as well as sorptive extraction using a stir bar, was also examined. The use of magnetic adsorbents with analytical techniques, such as solid-phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction improves the method for preparing samples concerning the influential role of magnetic adsorbents. Towards the end, promising features and future outlook are also directed.

JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2022; 319:115690. Abstract
Due to the environmental and production problems of emulsion, it is important to efficiently separate oil-water emulsion to meet the refinery requirement and clean up oil spills. Synthesis of a universal demulsifier is not an easy task because the physical properties of crude oil vary, which makes its characterization and demulsification procedure difficult. To overcome this problem, hydrophilic and magnetically recoverable poly (methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid)/iron oxide magnetic composite nanoparticles ((P(MMA-AA)/Fe3O4 NPs) were developed as an efficient and economical demulsifier via soap-free emulsion polymerization. To characterize the magnetic composite NPs for their appropriate surface morphology and magnetic domain, TEM, FTIR, VSM, and TGA analyses were carried out. The newly synthesized NPs displayed good hydrophilic properties as they migrated quickly to the aqueous emulsion phase, which was also reassured by their water contact angle of 75°. They exhibit strong magnetic characteristics (20 amu/g) in the oil-water emulsion, makings the hydrophilic wettability capable and attractive to the external magnet. Experimental results revealed that the prepared magnetic composite NPs separated 99% of the water from stable emulsion in 30 min and could be recycled 8 times through magnetic separation. The recycled magnetic composite NPs maintain their hydrophilic wettability and efficiency in separating oil-water emulsion, making them economical and commercially viable. The migration of magnetic composite NPs to the aqueous phase in the stable emulsion with a strong magnetic domain explains the coalescence of emulsified water droplets and their quick separation from the stable emulsions through the external magnet.

Abstract
Magnetic Molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have been recently recognized as an exceptional tool for monitoring and decontamination of environmental and biological samples of diverse nature. Based on the potential applications as sorbents and biomimetic sensors, herein, a core-shell magnetic-molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was developed as a selective material for separation and sensing of sunset yellow (SY) dye in an aqueous environment and real samples. The MMIP was synthesized via precipitation polymerization using SY as a template, MAA as a functional monomer (chosen based on simulation studies), EGDMA as a cross-linking agent, and AIBN as an initiator. To elaborate the specificity of MMIP, a comparative agent, magnetic non-imprinted polymer (MNIP) was also synthesized. The XRD results showed that the MMIP showed both crystalline and amorphous structure attributed to the presence and polymeric and non-polymeric groups. The FTIR spectra confirmed synthesis of intermediate and final MMIP product. The SEM results showed spherical morphology and porous structure of the MMIP with an average particle size of 0.636 μm in diameter. The MMIP was first employed as a sorbent for the removal of SY from the aqueous environment. The binding experiments performed at optimized operating conditions (pH 2; time 30 min; sorbent dosage 3 mg; sorbate concentration 80 ppm) showed more selectivity when compared with MNIP. The data fitted best to Langmuir's sorption isotherm (Qo 359.8 mg/g) and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The synthesized MMIP was also used as an electrochemical sensor for detection of SY dye in the aqueous environment, which exhibited a linear range of detection as (1.51 × 10-6 - 1.5 × 10-3 M). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 0.00413 M and 0.0137 M, respectively. While the R2 value was found to be 0.997 at optimized analytical conditions. These results suggested that the synthesized MMIP can be applied for the selective separation and quantification of SY dye in sample of diverse nature.

Abstract
AbstractIn this work, a magnetically separated photocatalyst with great efficiency CuCe-Ferrite/TiO2 composite was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis spectrophotometry, Fourier transformer infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Single-phase cubic spinel was formed by calcining the prepared sample at a temperature of 550 °C, according to the results. Different concentrations of reactive red 250 (RR250) dye photodegradation was evaluated using different doses of CuCe-ferrite/ TiO2 and TiO2 NPs. Higher efficiency of RR250 photodegradation up to 100% was obtained using CuCe-ferrite/ TiO2. The photodegradation efficiency was confirmed using chemical oxygen demand (COD) test of both treated and untreated samples. The oxidation process was mostly mediated by photogenerated .O2− according to scavenger test results. The catalyst possess higher photodegradation efficiency even after regeneration for ten times.

Abstract
Pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, and dyes are the main environmental contaminants that have serious effects on both land and aquatic lives and necessitate the development of effective methods to mitigate these issues. Although some conventional methods are in use to tackle soil contamination, but biochar and biochar-based composites represent a reliable and sustainable means to deal with a spectrum of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated environments. The capacity of biochars and derived constructs to remediate inorganic dyes, pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals from environmental matrices is attributed to their extensive surface area, surface functional groups, pore size distribution, and high sorption capability of these pollutants in water and soil environments. Application conditions, biochar feedstock, pyrolysis conditions and precursor materials are the factors that influence the capacity and functionality of biochar to adsorb pollutants from wastewater and soil. These factors, when improved, can benefit biochar in agrochemical and heavy metal remediation from various environments. However, the processes involved in biochar production and their influence in enhancing pollutant sequestration remain unclear. Therefore, this paper throws light on the current strategies, operational conditions, and sequestration performance of biochar and biochar-based composites for agrochemical and heavy metal in soil and water environments. The main challenges associated with biochar preparation and exploitation, toxicity evaluation, research directions and future prospects for biochar in environmental remediation are also outlined.

Abstract
The formation of stable emulsions is a fundamental problem in oil industry that can result in a sequence of environmental and operational problems. Chemical demulsification is extensively applied for the recovery of oil from water as well as water from oil. This review introduces different chemical demulsifiers applied for the demulsification and recovery of oil from oil in water (O/W) emulsions. Main types of surfactants (anionic, cationic, nonionics and amphoteric) involved in the formation of emulsions and enhances their stability were discussed. Promising demulsifiers such as nanoparticle (NP), hyperbranched polymers, and ionic liquids (IL), which achieved high oil recovery rate, parameters influencing demulsification efficiency and demulsification mechanisms were explored. Lastly, improvements, challenges, and new changes being made to chemical demulsifiers were underlined. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and hyperbranched polymers were very effective in recovering oil from O/W emulsions with an efficiency >95%. Polymers with highly hydrophilic content and high molecular weight can achieve excellent oil recovery rates due to higher interfacial activity, higher dispersion, and presence of specific functional groups. Although ionic liquids could achieve oil recovery up to 90%, high cost limits their applications. NPs showed excellent oil recovery behavior at low concentrations and ambient temperature. Demulsification efficiency of NPs can be enhanced by functionalize with other components (e.g., polymers and surfactants), while service life can be extend by silica coating. Future challenges include scaling up the use of NPs in oil recovery process and highlighting contrasts between lab-scale and field-scale applications.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a polymer hybrid family of compounds comprising metal ions that have been deliberately incorporated in organic ligands to form several multi-dimensional structures with unique structural and functional attributes. They have the typical properties of brittleness, major porosity, and randomly crystalline. These three factors hampered their potential incorporation into modern technologies. However, with the discovery of their polymers, hope was rekindled. Polymers, unlike their counterparts, are versatile and malleable and can be tailored into solids with a wide range of technical applications. MOFs can be effectively incorporated into polymer structures, resulting in polymers with enhanced properties and increased demand, according to recent studies. This review focuses on the synthetic procedures of MOFs used to create hybrid materials, as well as their potential environmentally related applications. Desalination, hazardous heavy metal removal and mitigation, gas and liquid separations and purifications, and dye removal will all be extensively discussed as applications. To assemble this review, we will add insight from recent papers and discoveries, as well as seminal reports from experts on the advancement of MOF-polymers.

Abstract
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacterial antibiotic used against conjunctivitis, meningitis, plague, cholera, and typhoid fever. As a consequence, chloramphenicol ends up polluting the aquatic environment, wastewater treatment plants, and hospital wastewaters, thus disrupting ecosystems and inducing microbial resistance. Here, we review the occurrence, toxicity, and removal of chloramphenicol with emphasis on adsorption techniques. We present the adsorption performance of adsorbents such as biochar, activated carbon, porous carbon, metal-organic framework, composites, zeolites, minerals, molecularly imprinted polymers, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effect of dose, pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time is discussed. Adsorption is controlled by π-π interactions, donor-acceptor interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. We also discuss isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamic data, selection of eluents, desorption efficiency, and regeneration of adsorbents. Porous carbon-based adsorbents exhibit excellent adsorption capacities of 500-1240 mg g-1. Most adsorbents can be reused over at least four cycles.

Abstract
Effective separation and remediation of environmentally hazardous pollutants are burning areas of research because of a constant increase in environmental pollution problems. An extensive number of emerging contaminants in the environmental matrices result in serious health consequences in animals, humans, and plants, even at trace levels. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to quantify these undesirable pollutants, even at a very low concentration, from the natural environment. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has recently achieved huge attention because of its strong magnetic domain and easy separation through an external magnetic field compared with simple solid-phase extraction. Therefore, MSPE appeared the most promising technique for removing and pre-concentration of emerging pollutants at trace level. Compared to the normal solid-phase extraction, MSPE as magnetic hybrid adsorbents offers the unique advantages of distinct nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials. It can exhibit efficient dispersion and rapid recycling when applying to a very complex matrix. This review highlights the possible environmental applications of magnetic hybrid nanoscale materials as effective MSPE sorbents to remediate a diverse range of environmentally toxic pollutants. We believe this study tends to evoke a variety of research thrust that may lead to novel remediation approaches in the forthcoming years.

Abstract
Tubular halloysite (HNT) is a naturally occurring aluminosilicate clay with a unique combination of natural availability, good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and functionality. This study explored the effects of magnetically responsive halloysite (MHNT) on the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and magnetic and mechanical properties of electrospun nanofibers based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatine (Gel) blends. MHNT was prepared via a simple modification of HNT with a perchloric-acid-stabilized magnetic fluid–methanol mixture. PCL/Gel nanofibers containing 6, 9, and 12 wt.% HNT and MHNT were prepared via an electrospinning process, respecting the essential rules for medical applications. The structure and properties of the prepared nanofibers were studied using infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and electron microscopy (SEM, STEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), magnetometry, and mechanical analysis. It was found that the incorporation of the studied concentrations of MHNT into PCL/Gel nanofibers led to soft magnetic biocompatible materials with a saturation magnetization of 0.67 emu/g and coercivity of 15 Oe for nanofibers with 12 wt.% MHNT. Moreover, by applying both HNT and MHNT, an improvement of the nanofibers structure was observed, together with strong reinforcing effects. The greatest improvement was observed for nanofibers containing 9 wt.% MHNT when increases in tensile strength reached more than two-fold and the elongation at break reached a five-fold improvement.

Abstract
The highly robust, effective, and sustainable remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated wastewater matrices, which is mainly generated from petroleum and related petrochemical industries, is of supreme interest. Owing to the notable presence of suspended solids, oil, and grease, organic matter, highly toxic elements, high salts, and recalcitrant chemicals, crude oil emulsions, and hydrocarbon-contaminated wastewater are considered a potential threat to the environments, animals, plants, and humans. To effectively tackle this challenging issue, magnetic hybrid materials assembled at nano- and micro-scale with unique structural, chemical, and functional entities are considered robust candidates for demulsification purposes. The current research era on magnetic materials has superwettability, leading to an effective system of superwettability, which is vibrant and promising. The wettability of magnetic and magnetic hybrid materials explaining the theme of superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity under the liquid. Herein, we reviewed the applications of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as effective demulsifiers. The demulsifier wettability, dose, pH, salinity, and surface morphology of compelling, magnetic nanoparticles are the main hidden factors in effective demulsifiers. There is a comprehensive discussion on the reuse and recyclability of MNPs after oil, water separation. Furthermore, the main challenges, coupled with the magnetic nanoparticles in the effective separation of emulsions, are intensified in detail. This review will compare the current literature and the utilization of MNPs for the demulsification of oil and water emulsions. This is envisioned that the MNPs would be critical in the petroleum and petrochemical industry to effectively eliminate water from a crude oil emulsion.

Abstract
The degradation of Pentoxifylline (PXF) was achieved successfully by green energy in a built-in solar photocatalytic system using hybrid LiCs ferrites (Li0.5Cs0.5FeO2) as magnetically recoverable photocatalysts. Kinetics showed a first-order reaction rate with maximum PXF removal of 94.91% at mildly acidic pH; additionally, the ferromagnetic properties of catalyst allowed recovery and reuse multiple times, reducing costs and time in degradation processes. The degradation products were identified by HPLC-MS and allowed us to propose a thermodynamically feasible mechanism that was validated through DFT calculations. Additionally, toxicity studies have been performed in bacteria and yeast where high loadings of Cs showed to be harmful to Staphylococcus aureus (MIC≥ 4.0 mg/mL); Salmonella typhi (MIC≥ 8.0 mg/mL) and Candida albicans (MIC≥ 10.0 mg/mL). The presented setup shows effectiveness and robustness in a degradation process using alternative energy sources for the elimination of non-biodegradable pollutants.

Abstract
At present, environmental contamination has become an emerging issue among researchers. These facts are due to the adverse impacts of an alarming number of recalcitrant contaminants that can affect both humans and animals. There is an urgent need to develop eco-friendly approaches to mitigate the effects of toxic pollutants from the environment. Magnetically responsive composite-based sorbents are very interesting and popular materials for pollutant abatement owing to the high specific surface area, superior adsorption capacity, and magnetic properties, which make their easy separation from sample solution/media. In this review article, we discuss various synthesis approaches, key physicochemical properties, and applications of magnetic composites for pollutant removal. Current gaps for coping with contamination are identified, and a comprehensive outlook in pollutant treatment using magnetic composites is outlined. This study unveils new horizons to researches for better understanding the properties of magnetically-composite-based sorbents and their application in environmental remediation.

Abstract
Magnetic mesoporous silica material was tested as adsorbent for removal of two usual colored compounds present in industrial wastewater. The magnetic mesoporous silica was synthesized by modified sol-gel method and characterized from the morpho-textural, structural and magnetic point of view. The specific surface area and the total pore volume indicate a good adsorption capacity of the material, and the obtained saturation magnetization strength value denotes a good magnetic separation from solution. The adsorption capacity of magnetic mesoporous silica increases with the increase of the initial dye concentration, and the removal efficiency of the dyes was dependent on the pH of the solution and decreased with increasing temperature. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model described best the adsorption mechanism, and the maximum adsorption capacities were determined from the Sips isotherm model, being 88.29 mg/g for Congo Red and 208.31 mg/g for Methylene Blue. A complete thermodynamic evaluation was performed, by determining the free energy, enthalpy and entropy, and the result showed a spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process. The recovery and reutilization of the adsorbent were estimated in five cycles of adsorption-desorption, and the results indicated a good stability and reusability of magnetic mesoporous silica. The new magnetic mesoporous silica can be easily separated from solution, via an external magnetic field, and may be effectively applied as adsorbent for elimination of dyes from colored polluted waters.

Abstract
In this work we present a novel procedure for ibuprofen adsorption from waters employing magnetic core-modified silver nanoparticles. We demonstrate that 93% adsorption of ibuprofen is achieved in 45 min by means of a simple method, for neutral pH and room temperature, also using a low dose of adsorbent, equal to 7 mg in 500 µL of suspension. The characterization of the adsorbent, before and after adsorption, was carried out by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, BET analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It is worth pointing out that ibuprofen can be desorbed and the adsorbent can be reused, remaining unaltered for the first three cycles, and showing 89.3% adsorption efficiency after the third regeneration. A three-parameter model and the Langmuir isotherm characterize the kinetics and isotherm of adsorption.

Abstract
Accelerating the rate-limiting step of Fe3+/Fe2+ conversion is a major challenge for H2O2 decomposition in conventional Fenton process. In this study, the catalytic mechanism of H2O2 by molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoparticles and Fe3+ ions was revealed and the abatement of organic micropollutants was investigated. The presence of both MoS2 and Fe3+ can efficiently decompose H2O2. Reaction system of H2O2/MoS2/Fe3+ is found to remove most of the tested pollutants by over 80% (except 65.9% for carbamazepine) within 60 min at pH of 3.0. Effective pH range of this reaction system can be extended to pH of 5.0. Adding MoS2 to Fe3+/H2O2 system promotes the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and improves the reaction rate between Fe3+ and H2O2. The formation of Mo6+ ions and Mo6+ peroxo-complexes is beneficial to H2O2 decomposition and pollutant degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and quenching experiments confirm the important role of hydroxyl radicals in H2O2/MoS2/Fe3+ system. Chloride ions (Cl-) promote degradation, while bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) inhibit degradation. As H2O2 concentration increases from nil to 1.0 mM, the value of total EE/O decreases from 0.083 to 0.003 kWh L-1, and the most energy efficient condition is determined. This study provides a new pathway for efficient decomposition of H2O2 by Fe3+ ions in an extended pH range, which is considered a facile and promising strategy for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Ultrasonication is an emerging and evergreen technique for the efficient synthesis of the catalytically active heterostructured materials. In-situ one-pot ultrasonic-assisted synthesis method was demonstrated in this work for the fabrication of silver tungstate encrusted polypyrrole nanocomposite using semi-automatic ultrasonic probe maintained at 34°C/50 kHz ultrasonic frequency and at 150 W ultrasonic power. This material retains enhanced optical, electrical, morphological properties, photocatalytic behavior in photodegradation of congo red dye, tetracycline drug and its electrochemical sensing potential for the effective determination of a broad spectrum of antibacterial drug, nitrofurazone. Optical properties were investigated using UltraViolet-Visible diffuse reflectance spectral (UV-VIS DRS) data along with Tauc's bandgap energy calculations. The morphological properties were examined using FESEM and TEM micrographs. All the PXRD and XPS details prove the effective distribution of PPy on the surface of Ag2WO4 rods with the help of powerful ultrasonic assistance. PPy acted as a support for nucleation and growth of Ag2WO4 and an inhibitor of phase transformations. Ag2WO4/PPy exhibits great photocatalytic behavior while comparing with pure PPy and Ag2WO4 in the degradation of carcinogenic dye congo red and antibiotic drug tetracycline. In addition to that, Ag2WO4/PPy modified GCE exposed a widespread linear range from 0.1 to 107 µM along with a very low detection limit of 12 nM and huge sensitivity of 1.74 µA µM-1cm-2 in the electrochemical determination of nitrofurazone.

Abstract
The present study describes the preparation of 50.3 nm superparamagnetic nanosorbents with high surface area for the adsorptive removal of lead and methyl orange from water. This material is based on the surface modification of iron oxide superparamagnetic nanoparticles with a double-shell coating of mesoporous silica whose porosity was increased up to 570 m2/g by the addition of a porogenic material and its calcination. The adsorptive performance of the nanosorbent was evaluated as a function of several parameters (e.g. solution pH, pollutant initial concentration, and contact time), concluding that pHs around 5 are needed to avoid precipitation of Pb2+ as Pb(OH)2 and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is reached after 2 h in all cases. The experimental data on the adsorption capacity of lead and methyl orange onto the nanosorbent were fit to a pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity value increases from 35 up to 50 mg/gNS for lead removal with increasing nanosorbent surface area. Contrary, for methyl orange the maximum adsorption goes up to 240 mg/gNS, indicating a larger nanosorbent surface affinity for the organic matter that is able to diffuse through the silica pores as probed by the intraparticle diffusion model. In addition, we found an good reusability (100% recovering after 4 sorption/desorption cycles for methyl orange removal), which makes of this magnetic nanosorbent suitable for remediation technologies.

Abstract
Wastewater containing dyes is considered as the top-priority pollutant when discharged into the environment. Herein, we report for the applicability of 254 nm ultraviolet light and electrochemical process using a titanium ruthenium oxide anode for the degradation of Allura red and erythrosine dyes. During the photolytic process, 95% of Allura red dye (50 ppm) was removed after 1 h at pH 12 and 35 °C, whereas 90% color removal of erythrosine dye (50 ppm) was achieved after 6 h of treatment at pH 6.0 and 30 °C. On the other hand, 99.60% of Allura red dye (200 ppm) was removed within 5 min by the electrochemical process applying a current density (5 mA cm-2) at pH 5.0 and 0.1 mol L-1 sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolytic medium. Similarly, 99.61% of erythrosine dye (50 ppm) degradation was achieved after 10 min at a current density of 8 mA cm-2, pH 6.0, and 0.1 mol L-1 of NaCl electrolyte. The minimum energy consumption value for Allura red and erythrosine dyes (0.196 and 0.941 kWh m-3, respectively) was calculated at optimum current densities of 5 and 8 mA cm-2. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical process is more efficient at removing dyes in a shorter time than the photolytic process since it generates powerful oxidants like the chlorine molecule, hypochlorous acid, and hypochlorite on the surface of the anode and initiates a chain reaction to oxidize the dyes molecules.

Abstract
Contaminated environments posed serious threats to the ecosystems and their living beings. Suitable preventive approaches should be adopted for effective remediation of contaminated environments to remove or lower their health and environmentally-related hazardous aspects. Petroleum or traces of petroleum contamination from oil fields and refineries to exposed soil in the form of gasoline, petrol, diesel, and used motor oil are a rich source of potential damage to the environment. Conventional ways of treatment and management of hydrocarbon are complicated, insufficient, and expensive. Herein, we reviewed a smart approach for the removal of petroleum source contamination from exposed soil using environment-friendly chemical surfactants and nanoscale surfactant system. The host/guest complexes formation of surfactants with the hydrocarbons (hydrophobic contaminants) of soil and water by the encapsulation mechanism of hydrophobes into the (micelles) a self-assembly aggregation of surfactants. Recently, surfactants stabilized by nanoparticles (NPs) acquired more importance and popularity over surfactant alone. The persistence of diverse hydrocarbon-based contaminants and the mechanisms of removal using pristine surfactants or NP-stabilized surfactant foams are discussed with suitable examples. In summary, herein, an effort has been made to present the notable potentialities of pristine surfactants and NP-stabilized surfactant foams to remediate the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil for a greener and sustainable ecosystem.

Abstract
Surfactant-enhanced soil washing has been used for remediation of organic pollutants for an extended period, but its effectiveness and wide application was limited by the high concentration of surfactants utilized. In this work, the efficiency of conventional soil washing performance was enhanced by 12-25% through the incorporation of air bubbles into the low concentration surfactant soil washing system. Surfactant selection pre-experiment using aerated and conventional soil washing reveals Brij 35 > TX100 > Tween 80 > Saponin in diesel oil removal. Optimization of the effect of time, surfactant concentration, pH, agitation speed, and airflow rate in five levels were undertaken using Response Surface Methodology and Central composite design. The optimum degree of variables achieved was 90 min of washing time, 370 mg/l of concentration, washing pH of 10,535 rpm of agitation speed and 7.2 l/min of airflow rate with 79.5% diesel removal. The high predicted R 2 value of 0.9517 showed that the model could efficiently be used to predict diesel removal efficiency. The variation in efficiency of aeration assisted and conventional soil washing was variable depending on the type of surfactant, organic matter content of the soil, particle size distribution and level of pollutant weathering. The difference in removal efficiency of the two methods increases when the level of organic matter increases and when the particle size and age of contamination decreases.

Environmentally responsive and anti-bugs textile finishes - Recent trends, challenges, and future perspectives. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2019; 690:667-682. [PMID: 31301507 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.06.520] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/23/2019] [Revised: 06/24/2019] [Accepted: 06/30/2019] [Indexed: 02/08/2023]
Abstract
Bugs, such as microorganisms and insects, are present in the environment and sometimes can be health-hazardous if the living environment is not maintained following proper hygienic regulations. In the present scenario of increasing public awareness, environmental consciousness, and growing demand for easy-care, and disinfected textiles, the manufacturing of protective and easy-to-care textiles has become a key necessity of the modern world. Comfortable, clean, hygienic, antimicrobial, and insect repelling properties of textile goods are gaining the accelerating research momentum as a basic requirement to produce multifunctional textiles. These functional finishes have numerous applications such as in-home textiles, bed nets, and tenting, camping gear as well as in military uniforms. Synthetic antimicrobial and insect repellents are quite effective against insects and microscopic organisms but are slightly toxic to the human being and the environment. To overcome these problems, researchers are considering natural agents for functional finishes, but their effectiveness is less durable to textile material. Besides needful advantages, the excessive use of dyes in finishing processes heavily required washing cycles and ultimately release various types of hazardous dyes or wasteful effluents in the environment. This review reports the chemical composition and recent developments in textile finishes, particularly antimicrobial and insect repellent textile finishes. A large number of commonly used antimicrobial agents (i.e. chitosan, zwitterionic compounds, silver and silver-based compounds, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, imidazolium salts, triclosan and quaternary ammonium salts) and insect repellent textile finishes (i.e. N‑N‑diethyl‑m‑toluamide, permethrin, cypermethrin, pyrethrum, picaridin, bioallethrin, citriodiol and essential oils) have been presented. Finally, the review is wrapped up with major research gaps/challenges, concluding remarks, and future opportunities in this area of research.

Synthesis of super hydrophilic cellulose-alpha zirconium phosphate ion exchange membrane via surface coating for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2019; 690:167-180. [PMID: 31288108 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.07.009] [Citation(s) in RCA: 32] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/17/2019] [Revised: 07/01/2019] [Accepted: 07/01/2019] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
In this study, commercial cellulose membranes were surface coated with alpha‑zirconium phosphate nanoparticles (α-ZrP-n) to study their impact on the overall removal efficiency of heavy metals from synthetic metal mixture wastewater solution. A total of four homogeneous solutions (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 wt%) of α-ZrP-n were prepared by sonicating the nanoparticles in deionized water. These solutions were used to surface coat the commercial cellulose membranes. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) along with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) were used to confirm the attachment of α-ZrP-n on the cellulose membrane surface. Furthermore, the structural characteristics of the α-ZrP-n modified cellulose membranes were also studied. The water contact angle results showed that all coated membranes remained super-hydrophilic. The porosity of the membranes decreased to 48% with the addition of 1.00 wt% α-ZrP-n compared to 65% for the pristine membrane. The mechanical strength has improved from 3.4 MPa for the pristine membrane to about 4 MPa for the 1.00 wt% α-ZrP-n membrane. Similarly, the thermal stability was found to be slightly enhanced as evidenced by the increase in decomposition temperature to 280 and 285 °C in the 0.75 and 1.00 wt% α-ZrP-n membranes, respectively. Furthermore, a removal efficiency of 97.0 ± 0.6, 98.0 ± 0.5, 99.5 ± 0.2, and 91.5 ± 2.0% for Cu (II), Zn (II), Ni (II), and Pb (II), respectively, was observed with the 0.50 wt% α-ZrP-n membrane. This removal was achieved at a flux of 41.85 ± 0.87 × 103 LMH. Increasing the α-ZrP-n concentration further did not show any improvement in the overall removal efficiency. However, it led to 46% flux reduction in the 1.00 wt% α-ZrP-n membrane. The mechanism of removal of the heavy metal ions was postulated to be a combination of ion exchange and electrostatic attraction of the strong negatively charged α-ZrP-n membranes and the free metal ions in the wastewater solution.

[PMID: 31229826 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.06.200] [Citation(s) in RCA: 25] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/18/2019] [Revised: 06/08/2019] [Accepted: 06/12/2019] [Indexed: 02/05/2023]
Abstract
Aquatic ecosystem contaminated with hazardous pollutants has become a high priority global concern leading to serious economic and environmental damage. Among various treatment approaches, carbon nanostructured materials have received particular interest as a novel platform for emerging pollutants removal owing to their unique chemical and electrical properties, biocompatibility, high scalability, and infinite functionalization possibility with an array of inorganic nanomaterials and bio-molecules. Within this framework, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used due to their hollow and layered structure and availability of large specific surface area for the incoming contaminants. Carbon nanotubes can be used either as single-walled, multi-walled, or functionalized nanoconstructs. TiO2/SiO2-functionalized CNTs are among the most promising heterogeneous photocatalytic candidates for the degradation of a range of organic compounds, heavy metals reduction, and selective oxidative reactions. Herein, we reviewed recent development in the application of TiO2 and SiO2 functionalized nanostructured carbon materials as potential environmental candidates. After a brief overview of synthesis and properties of CNTs, we explicitly discussed the potential applications of TiO2/SiO2 functionalized CNTs for the remediation of a variety of environmentally-related pollutants of high concern, including synthetic dyes or dye-based hazardous waste effluents, as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceutically active compounds, pesticides, toxic heavy elements, remediation of metal-contaminated soil, and miscellaneous organic contaminants. The work is wrapped up by giving information on current challenges and recommended guidelines about future research in the field bearing in mind the conclusions of the current review.
