Abstract
Polybrominated and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/furans (PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs) are primarily generated through anthropogenic thermal and chemical processes involving bromine and chlorine, respectively. However, the differential impacts of these anthropogenic activities on their environmental occurrences remain incompletely characterized yet. We conducted a comprehensive field soil study in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), a representative urban agglomeration in South China, to investigate the occurrence, sources, and risks of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs. Compared to PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs in the PRD soils demonstrated comparable ubiquity and enrichment potential in organic-rich soils, but exhibited distinct compositions, inverse spatial distributions, and concentrations one to three orders of magnitude lower. PBDD/Fs in these samples were predominantly derived from bromine-involved industries (particularly those related to polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)), thermal-related activities, and vehicular emissions. Consequently, they showed higher levels in highly industrialized/urbanized regions of the PRD and displayed positive correlations with local industrial/urban-related socioeconomic parameters, including gross domestic product (GDP), industrial output, population density, and volumes of vehicles, wastewater, waste gas, and waste incineration. In contrast, PCDD/Fs in these samples were primarily contributed by local agricultural activities (particularly the historical use of pentachlorophenol (PCP)/PCP-Na), thereby exhibiting significant positive correlations with local grain acreage, grain yield, and consumptions of pesticides and agricultural films. The contributions from biomass/waste open-burning and metalworking-related industries were three times lower. Unlike organic carbon content, the particle size of the PRD soils demonstrated insignificant influences on the distributions of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs. PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs collectively exhibited notable carcinogenic risks in ≥50 % of the PRD soils and unacceptable non-carcinogenic risks in approximately one-quarter of the PRD soils. Most of these high-risk samples were collected from sites located in rural agricultural regions of the PRD, warranting continuous attention.

Abstract
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are notorious persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with proven toxicity to human and ecosystems. This review critically evaluates existing research, emphasizing knowledge gaps regarding PCDD/F emissions, environmental behavior, human exposure, and associated risks in China. The current emission inventory of PCDD/Fs in China remains highly uncertain, both in terms of total emissions and emission trends. Moreover, existing monitoring data primarily focus on areas near pollution sources, limiting comprehensive understanding of the overall spatiotemporal characteristics of PCDD/F pollution. To address this, we propose a novel approach that integrates the Multi-media Urban Mode (MUM) model with an atmospheric chemical transport model that includes a dual adsorption model to capture gas-particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs in the atmosphere. This coupled model can simulate the transport and fate of PCDD/Fs in multi-media environments with high spatiotemporal resolution, facilitating a nuanced understanding of the impacts of emissions, climate, urbanization and other factors on PCDD/F pollution. Additionally, dietary ingestion, particularly from animal-derived foods, is identified as the predominant source (up to 98%) of human exposure to PCDD/Fs. While the changes in dietary structure, population distribution, and age structure can influence human exposure to PCDD/Fs, their impacts have not yet been quantified. The proposed model lays the foundation for a systematic assessment of health risks from PCDD/F exposure through various pathways by further incorporating a food chain model. Overall, this review offers a comprehensive strategy for assessing PCDD/F pollution, encompassing the entire continuum from emissions to environmental impacts.

Abstract
Dioxin is a typical class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that could cause cancer. In China, the contribution of dietary dioxins to the cancer burden remains underexplored. This study evaluates the cancer risk and burden due to dietary dioxins and dioxin-like compounds among Chinese residents from 2000 to 2020. Based on adjustments in China's dioxin policies, the study period was divided into three stages with split years of 2007 and 2014 to estimate the toxic equivalent (TEQ) of dioxins. Participants in dietary surveys conducted in 31 provinces were included. Dietary exposure to dioxins was estimated in a probability model and compared with the provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI). The risk was assessed using carcinogenic slope factors and expressed as the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR). A two-stage model evaluated the burden of cancer attributable to dietary dioxins and dioxin-like compounds. Among all food categories, the highest concentration of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds was observed in aquatic foods at 0.15 pg TEQ/kg. Median dietary exposure to dioxins among Chinese residents decreased from 12.39 pg TEQ/kg/month to 8.72 pg TEQ/kg/month between 2000 and 2020. Consequently, the ILCR due to dietary dioxins declined from 6.44 × 10-5 to 4.53 × 10-5. The health risks were higher in younger groups and among residents of coastal areas (P < 0.001). The burden of cancer attributable to dietary intake of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in the Chinese population in 2000-2007, 2008-2014, and 2015-2020 was 2.25 (2.09-2.42) per 100,000, 2.20 (2.06-2.35) per 100,000, and 1.68 (1.60-1.77) per 100,000, respectively. Furthermore, the disease burden was highest for prostate cancer in men and for breast cancer in women. The dioxin management policies has reduced the burden of cancer attributable to dietary exposure to dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in China. However, excess exposure in coastal areas and children remains a priority for attention.

Abstract
With the phase-out of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its replacement by perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs), there is a potential for increased exposure to various new PFECAs among the general population in China. While there are existing studies on dietary exposure to legacy perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), research on dietary exposure to PFECAs, especially among the general Chinese populace, remains scarce. In the present study, we investigated the distribution of PFECAs in dietary sources from 33 cities across five major regions in China, along with the associated dietary intake. Analysis indicated that aquatic animal samples contained higher concentrations of legacy PFASs compared to those from terrestrial animals and plants. In contrast, PFECAs were found in higher concentrations in plant and terrestrial animal samples. Notably, hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer (HFPO-DA) was identified as the dominant compound in vegetables, cereals, pork, and mutton across the five regions, suggesting widespread dietary exposure. PFECAs constituted the majority of PFAS intake (57 %), with the estimated daily intake (EDI) of HFPO-DA ranging from 2.33 to 3.96 ng/kg bw/day, which corresponds to 0.78-1.32 times the reference dose (RfD) (3.0 ng/kg bw/day) set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Given the ubiquity of HFPO-DA and many other PFECAs in the nationwide diet of China, there is an urgent need for further research into these chemicals to establish relevant safety benchmarks or consumption advisory values for the diet.

Abstract
Large-scale metal contamination across the food web is an intractable problem due to increasing pollutant emissions, atmospheric transport, and dry and wet deposition of elements. The present study focus on several trace metals that are rarely studied but have special toxicity, including tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), gold (Au), hafnium (Hf), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), tellurium (Te) and iridium (Ir). We investigated trace metals residues and distribution characteristics, and further evaluated the potential health risks from major daily food intakes in 33 cities in China. Sn, Sb, Ir, Hf, and Au were frequently detected in food samples with the concentrations ranged from ND (not detected) to 24.78 µg/kg ww (wet weight). Eggs exhibited the highest residual level of all detected metals (13.70 ± 14.70 µg/kg ww in sum), while the lowest concentrations were observed in vegetables (0.53 ± 0.17 µg/kg ww in sum). Sn accounting for more than 50% of the total trace metals concentration in both terrestrial and aquatic animal origin foods. In terrestrial plant origin foods, Sn and Ir were the most abundant elements. Hf and Au were the most abundant elements in egg samples. In addition, Sb and Ir showed a clear trophic dilution effect in terrestrial environments, while in aquatic ecosystems, Sn, Hf, and Au exhibited obvious trophic amplification effects. The calculated average estimated daily intake (EDI) via food consumption in five regions of China was 0.09 µg/(kg·day), implying the health risk of aforementioned elements was acceptable.

Abstract
Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) eggs have been identified as useful indicators for biomonitoring the environmental pollution in China. In this study, we investigated thirty eggs of black-crowned night heron collected from the upper Yangtze River (Changjiang) Basin, Southwest China, for the occurrence of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Our results showed a general presence of POPs in night heron eggs with OCPs being the dominant contaminants, having a geometric mean concentration of 22.2 ng g-1 wet weight (ww), followed by PCBs (1.36 ng g-1 ww), PBDEs (0.215 ng g-1 ww), and PCDD/Fs (23.0 pg g-1 ww). The concentration levels were found to be significantly higher in night heron eggs than in poultry eggs by one or two magnitude orders. Among OCP congeners, p,p'-DDE was found to be predominant in night heron eggs, with a geometric mean concentration of 15.1 ng g-1 ww. Furthermore, species-specific congener patterns in eggs suggested similar or different sources for different POPs, possibly associated with contaminated soil and parental dietary sources. Additionally, estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were used to evaluate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk associated with consumption of bird eggs. Our results revealed non-negligible non-cancer and cancer risk for humans who consume wild bird eggs as a regular diet instead of poultry eggs.

Abstract
The phosphorus chemical industry is an important source of heavy metals in farmland. Vegetables grown on contaminated soil potentially impose adverse effects on human health. In this study, the pollution status and health risks of heavy metals in vegetables around a phosphorus chemical plant in Kaiyang County, Guizhou Province, southwestern China, were assessed, and the low-accumulation vegetables were screened by bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and cluster analysis. Results showed the average concentrations of Hg, As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co, and Zn in vegetables were 0.015, 0.728 0.382, 0.227, 0.850, 27.227, 0.525, and 6.438 mg/kg, respectively. The single-factor pollution index showed that Cd was moderately polluted, and Cr, Hg, As, and Pb were slightly polluted. The Nemerow pollution index showed that the overall heavy metal pollution was classified as moderately polluted. The accumulation of heavy metals in different vegetables varied greatly, and chard, crown daisy, chayote, pumpkin, eggplant, white radish, sweet potato, carrot, and potato were selected as the low-accumulator vegetables. The consumption of all vegetables except chayote poses both carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks; among them, the consumption of sweet potato leaves has the highest health risks. The local population needs to adjust plantation structure and change dietary habits, and government should strengthen the management of phosphorus chemical plant pollution.

Abstract
Cereals and their derivative products such as starch and cyclodextrin are significant natural materials for sustainable textile processing (e.g., sizing, dispersing, etc.). However, the contamination of cereals with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is often neglected, which has led to increasing concerns due to the adverse effects on end users. Therefore, monitoring PCBs in cereals is of great importance in preventing health risks. However, high starch, protein, and fat contents make cereals a complicated matrix and can challenge the analysis of PCBs in cereals. This work describes a facile and rapid strategy for quantifying 18 PCBs in cereals that included corn, wheat, and rice through dispersive solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Importantly, this was the first time that carboxyl-modified, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were incorporated in the detection of PCBs in cereals. The influences of several parameters on the extraction and clean-up efficiency were investigated; these included the type and volume of extraction solvent, sonication time, and the type and dosage of the adsorbent. The matrix effects on quantification were also evaluated. This approach exhibited a better clean-up performance. All the analytes showed weak matrix effects, and thus a solvent standard plot could be prepared for their quantification. Spiking experiments in the selected matrices at three concentration levels from 0.5 to 10 μg/kg resulted in satisfactory recoveries that ranged from 79.2% to 110.5% with relative standard deviations (RSDs; n = 6) less than 10.3%. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.04 to 0.1 μg/kg and 0.1 to 0.4 μg/kg, respectively. The practical application of this method was investigated by analyzing actual cereal samples, which demonstrated that the proposed approach was a facile and efficient strategy for PCB determination and provided a reference for the safety evaluation of sustainable textiles. The method also could be generalized to other troublesome samples for testing of multiple PCBs.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, several pollutants classified as environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a matter of significant public health concern. Companion animals play a major role in human society, and pet ownership is substantially increasing worldwide. These intimate human-pet relationships imply sharing much of the same environment, thus including exposure to similar levels of EDCs in daily routine. Here, we review the current knowledge on the sources and routes of exposure to EDCs in domestic indoor and outdoor environments and discuss whether endocrine disruption is a health concern in pets. We summarize the phenomenon of endocrine disruption, providing examples of EDCs with a known impact on dog and cat health. Then, we propose an overview of the literature on the adverse effects of EDCs in domestic pets, with a special focus on the health of reproductive and thyroid systems. Finally, we explore the potential role of companion animals as unintentional sentinels of environmental exposure to EDCs and the implications for public health risk assessment in a "shared risk" scenario. Overall, this review supports the need for an integrated approach considering humans, animals, and the environment as a whole for a comprehensive assessment of the impact of EDCs on human and animal health.

Abstract
Residual levels and accumulation characteristics of six hazardous heavy metal elements (As, Cd, Hg, Tl, Pb, and U) and seven essential heavy metal elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Se) were investigated in 17 kinds of frequently consumed foodstuffs collected from 33 cities distributed in five regions of China. The concentrations of the detected metals were lower than the maximum limits promulgated by the Chinese government except Pb and inorganic As (iAs). Foods of aquatic origin and terrestrial plant origin exhibited high potentials to accumulate heavy metals, especially algae and shellfish. The calculated hazard index (HI) of heavy metal exposure via consumption of foodstuffs were 2.93-5.01 for adults in the five surveyed region, implying the co-exposure of heavy metals via food consumption would lead to potential non-carcinogenic risks. iAs was the predominant contributor to HI values with the average contribution of 40.5% in all five regions. Consumption of terrestrial plant origin foods contributed 76.9% of HI values induced by heavy metal exposure. The calculated target cancer risks of iAs in the five regions were 5 × 10-4-1 × 10-3, all exceeding the acceptable level of 10-4, indicating it is necessary and urgent to reduce the contamination of iAs in foodstuffs on the Chinese markets.

Abstract
The widespread use of rare earth elements (REEs) in agriculture and high-tech industry resulted in significant release of REEs into the environment. However, there is a scarcity of studies focusing on the presence of REEs in the food worldwide. The present study investigated the residual levels of REEs in 14 representative food categories collected from 33 major cities of China. The measured total REEs (ΣREE) levels in the foods of aquatic origin were 174.97 μg kg-1 wet weight (ww), which was 6.35 times higher than those of terrestrial origin. It is interesting to observe a trophic dilution effect for REEs in both terrestrial and aquatic food samples. REEs in food samples at low trophic levels exhibited relatively high REEs levels; while for high trophic level food, relatively low REEs levels were observed. The distribution patterns of REEs varied across the different food categories and regions, with Ce being the most abundant REEs in all food samples, followed by La, Nd and Sm. High levels of ΣREE in food samples were observed in Midland, while low levels were found in the Northeast. Cereals was the dominant contributor to the estimated daily intake of REEs. The health risk of REEs by daily food consumption in China was acceptable.

Abstract
Sichuan pickle is one of popular traditional fermented foods in China. However, the contamination of heavy metals in Sichuan pickle, particularly home-made Sichuan pickle and aged pickle brine, is little known. Therefore, the content of trace (Cr, Cu, and Zn) and toxic elements (As, Pb, and Cd) in Sichuan industrial pickle (SIP), Sichuan home-made pickle (SHP), and aged pickle brine collected from local markets and families in Sichuan province, respectively, was detected by inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) and the health risk was assessed by target hazard quotients including target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ). Consequently, the mean concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Cd were 0.122, 0.540, 2.516, 0.023, 0.015, and 0.106 mg/kg in SIP and 0.071, 0.364, 2.698, 0.014, 0.015, and 0.289 mg/kg in SHP, respectively, lower than the maximum allowable concentrations set by Chinese regulations, except for Cr and Cd in few samples. Principal component analysis of the heavy metal content could obviously distinguish between SIP and SHP. The content of As, Pb, and Cd in leaf pickles was significantly higher than that in pickles fermented with other types of vegetables. A significant enrichment of heavy metals in aged pickle brine over 10 years was observed, but pickle jars had no significant effect on heavy metal content in aged pickle brine. The intake of heavy metals through daily consumption of SIP and SHP was at a safe level, whereas the TTHQ of leaf pickle was 1.006, indicating a potential health risk. In conclusion, this study provided fundamental data for food safety assurance of Sichuan pickle. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Sichuan pickle is one of popular traditional fermented foods in China. In the present study, we investigated the contamination of heavy metals in Sichuan pickles by detecting the content of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in Sichuan industrial pickle, Sichuan home-made pickle, and aged pickle brine, and estimated the health risk to local residents. This study can provide a reference for the safety risk of Sichuan industrial and home-made pickle in terms of heavy metal contamination, and enhance the food safety in the processing, production, and consumption of Sichuan pickle in local families and pickle industry.

Abstract
Breast milk samples were collected from 51 mothers in a seaside city Dalian, where the residents usually have higher dietary exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to the larger consumption of seafood. The lipid-basis concentrations of ∑Cl2-8DD/Fs, ∑Cl2-10Bs, and total toxicity equivalent (WHO-TEQ) were measured to be in the ranges of 35.7-2727.8 pg/g, 4.91-52.64 ng/g, and 2.27-36.30 pg/g, respectively. The average proportion of ∑Cl2-3DD/Fs was higher than that of ∑Cl4-7DD/Fs in the collected human breast milk samples, suggesting that the health risk of Cl2-3DD/Fs should be especially concerned. The concentration data of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in human breast milk essentially followed a positive skew probability distribution. Women in high-level exposure scenarios exhibited a higher potential to accumulate homologues Cl4DFs, Cl7DFs, Cl8DF, and Cl6Bs in breast milk. Three PCDD/F congeners (1,2,3,6,7,8-Cl6DF, 1,2,3,4,7,8-Cl6DF, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-Cl7DD) and three PCB congeners (PCB 126, PCB 138, and PCB 169) were identified as good indicators for the accumulation of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in human breast milk, respectively. The food-to-milk accumulation factors (FMAF) were calculated to evaluate the accumulation potentials of different PCDD/F and PCB congeners in human breast milk via dietary exposure. The calculated FMAF value presented a non-monotonic variation with the logarithm of n-octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW) with a peak at a log KOW value of about 7.3 and a valley at a log KOW value of about 8. The mean value of the estimated daily intake (EDI) of total WHO-TEQ for breast-fed infants in Dalian, predicted by Monte Carlo simulation, was 10 folds higher than the upper range of the tolerable daily intake (TDI) value (4 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw/d), suggesting continued and enhanced efforts should be made to reduce the exposure risk of infants to PCDD/Fs and PCBs.

Abstract
Contamination of food chain by Polychlorinated biphenyls through use of pesticides, electric and industrial waste poses human health risk. In previous studies, PCB species were stated as endocrine disrupting pollutants and showed toxic health effects like cancerous and noncancerous in animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of PCBs and its toxicity equivalence in food item from plant source to evaluate the health risk in Khanewal and Multan, Pakistan. Samples were collected and processed for further analysis of PCB species through GC/MS after extraction and clean up. The mean concentrations of PCBs ranged as 2.71–151.67 ng/g in beans and grains and 2.30–97.00 ng/g dry weight in vegetables and were lower than 200–3000 ng/g PCBs recommended by FDA tolerance level for all foods. The mean concentrations of two NDL-PCB species detected in all vegetables, beans and grains except S.indicum and T.aestivum were lower than maximum allowable concentration of non-dioxin like PCBs i.e. 40ngg−1 reported by European Commission. Mean TEQ of sum of 14 PCB species ranged as 1.52–5.91 ng-WHO-TEQg−1 in vegetables and 1.46–10.04 ng-WHO-TEQg−1 in beans and grains. The present study concluded that the mean concentrations and mean TEQs of PCB species in most of the vegetables, beans and grains were found safe but due to higher consumption rate of some vegetables and grains, posed the moderate level of risk for human health. This study emphasizes on an implement of the strict rules regarding the use of restricted chemicals to diminish the effluence in food chains. Current research will be useful in up gradation of effective measures to reduce the poisonous contribution of PCB sources and the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystem in the country.

Abstract
It is well established that for non-occupationally exposed populations, dietary intake is, by far, the main way of human exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs), a family of environmental POPs with a well-known potential toxicity -including carcinogenicity-in humans. We here summarize the results of recent studies (2010-2021) (databases: Scopus and PubMed), focused on determining the levels of PCDD/Fs in food samples of different origins, as well as the dietary intake of these pollutants. We have revised studies conducted in various Asian, American and European countries. However, information is rather limited, with no recent data for most countries over the world. Due to the enormous differences in the methodologies of the studies, to conduct a detailed comparison of the results for the different regions and countries has not been possible. Notwithstanding, where data over time are available, important reductions have been observed. These reductions have been linked to the decreases in the environmental emissions of PCDD/Fs noted in recent years. Interestingly, reductions in the levels of PCDD/Fs in biological tissues are also occurring in parallel. In general, the tolerable daily/weekly/monthly dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs are not being currently exceeded where data are available.
