Abstract
Sleep time and depression symptoms are important factors affecting cognitive development in adolescents. Based on the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) database, this study used a two-wave cross-lagged model to examine the bidirectional relationship between sleep time, depression symptoms, and cognitive development. Descriptive statistics showed that Chinese adolescents' cognitive development increased significantly from 7th to 8th grade in junior high school, but unfortunately, their depression level and average sleep time per night demonstrated a slightly deteriorating trend. Correlation analysis showed that there was a relatively stable negative correlation between cognitive development, sleep time, and depression symptoms. Moreover, the cross-lagged model revealed that there was a bidirectional relationship between cognitive development and sleep time, a bidirectional relationship between depression symptoms and sleep time, and a unidirectional relationship between depression symptoms and cognitive development. Male adolescents in the subgroup were consistent with the total sample. Among female adolescents, only cognitive development and sleep time have a bidirectional relationship, while depression symptoms and cognitive development, and depression symptoms and sleep time have a unidirectional relationship. Therefore, it is of significance to take targeted action to promote cognitive development and healthy growth in adolescents worldwide.

Abstract
Despite the remarkable contribution of smartphones in improving our lives, concerns have been raised about their uncontrolled usage, emphasizing its consequences on individual sleep and well-being. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and both positive and negative dimensions of subjective well-being (SWB) - subjective happiness and depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating role of sleep quality. A sample of 384 Bangladeshi youths (mean age = 18.99; 49.3 % female) were recruited through a convenience sampling technique and interviewed using a structured questionnaire that assessed PSU, sleep quality, subjective happiness, and depressive symptoms. The mediation analysis results indicated that sleep quality mediated the association between PSU and subjective happiness and depressive symptoms. The results also showed that subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction were particularly responsible for the mediation effect. Thus, the findings highlight the necessity of designing sleep quality-enhancing interventions for youth to subside PSU's detrimental effects on subjective well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are at high risk for sleep difficulties, though sleep problems are widely recognized as a public health concern for adolescents broadly. School climate represents a potentially critical but understudied influence on sleep difficulties, given growing evidence supporting its association with health outcomes. The present study is the first to utilize a multimethod, multi-informant approach, including adolescent-report, parent-report, and actigraphy, to examine associations between school climate and different aspects of sleep functioning among adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. METHODS Participants included a well-characterized sample of adolescents (45.1% female, 82.6% White) with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 151) and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 137) between 13 and 15 years old (M = 14.09). RESULTS Multigroup path analyses controlling for demographic characteristics, internalizing symptoms, and medication use indicated better-perceived school climate was associated with less adolescent-reported daytime sleepiness and fewer sleep/wake problems, regardless of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder status, though stronger associations were found in the non-attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder group. In contrast, for both adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, school climate was not significantly associated with adolescent- or actigraphy-measured sleep duration, actigraphy-assessed sleep efficiency, or parent-reported sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, findings indicate school climate is associated with specific vs. broad-based aspects of sleep, and that associations may differ based on how sleep is assessed. Findings also contribute to an emerging evidence base supporting the importance of school climate to adolescent sleep quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This observational longitudinal study examines whether engagement in health behaviours (general health behaviours, sleep hygiene, comfort food snacking) mediate the link between self-compassion and mental health among emerging adults. DESIGN/METHOD Participants were 332 emerging adults recruited from a large U.S. University (Mage = 19.0; SD = 1.8) who completed two electronic surveys 7-10 weeks apart (T1 and T2). The Hayes PROCESS macro model #4 was used to test whether engagement in health behaviours at T2 health mediated the association between T1 self-compassion and T2 mental health (5000 bootstrap samples). RESULTS T1 self-compassion was significantly associated with all T2 health behaviours except for comfort food snacking. T2 sleep hygiene behaviours mediated the relationship between T1 self-compassion and both T2 depression and T2 anxiety (bootstrapped 95% CIs [-.085, -.029] and [-.064, -.016], respectively), although the total effect of self-compassion on anxiety was no longer significant when accounting for T1 sleep hygiene and T1 anxiety. Overall T2 health behaviour engagement mediated the relationship between T1 self-compassion and T2 depression only (bootstrapped 95% CI [-.044, -.006]), although the mediation was non-significant after accounting for T1 overall health behaviour engagement and T1 depression. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that individuals with higher self-compassion engage more in overall health behaviours and sleep hygiene practices, and that sleep hygiene and general engagement in health behaviours help to explain the link between self-compassion and mental health symptoms over time. These findings highlight the multiple positive downstream effects of fostering self-compassion and have important implications for mental health care providers utilizing self-compassion to support health behaviour engagement in order to promote mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Energy drinks are becoming increasingly popular among adolescents despite potential adverse health effects. This study addresses the research question: "Is there an association between the frequency of energy drink consumption and insufficient sleep by sex?" PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the frequency of energy drink consumption by sex among Korean adolescents aged 12 to 18 years and investigate its relationship with insufficient sleep. METHODS We analyzed secondary data using data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2022). The study included 36 361 middle- and high school students. Complex sample logistic regression analysis examined the relationship between energy drink consumption and insufficient sleep by sex. RESULTS Among the respondents, 9.0% of male and 9.2% of female students reported consuming energy drinks frequently. In complex sample logistic regression analyses, those who reported consuming frequent energy drinks had significantly higher odds of insufficient sleep than the no-consumption group, controlling for potential confounding variables (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.76-2.61 in male students; adjusted OR 3.25, 95% CI 2.39-4.41 in female students). Notably, female students who frequently consume energy drinks pose a substantial concern regarding insufficient sleep. CONCLUSIONS Frequent energy drink consumption was associated with insufficient sleep time in both male and female adolescents. This highlights the need for public health policy interventions to reduce energy drink consumption and promote appropriate amounts of sleep among adolescents.

Abstract
Background Gallstones are a prevalent digestive system disorder with significant health implications. Recent research suggests that sleep disorders, such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome, may influence the development of gallstones through various metabolic pathways. Depression, often accompanying sleep disorders, may play a mediating role in this relationship. This study uses data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to explore the potential mediating role of depression in the association between sleep disorders and gallstones. Methods We analyzed data from 7,868 adults aged 20 and older from NHANES 2017-2020. Gallstones were defined based on self-reported medical diagnoses. Sleep disorders were assessed through self-reported sleep difficulties, and depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale. Logistic regression models evaluated direct associations between sleep disorders, depressive symptoms, and gallstones. Causal mediation analysis further examined the mediating role of depressive symptoms. Finally, subgroup analyses were performed by age, sex, and obesity status. Results Both sleep disorders (OR = 2.00; 95% CI, 1.73-2.32; P<0.001) and depressive symptoms (OR = 2.09; 95% CI, 1.70-2.56; P<0.001) were significantly associated with gallstones, with results remaining significant after adjusting for confounders. A significant association was also observed between sleep disorders and depressive symptoms (OR = 5.53; 95% CI, 4.71-6.50; P<0.001). Mediation analysis indicated that depressive symptoms partially mediate the relationship between sleep disorders and gallstones, with an average causal mediation effect (ACME) of 0.00720 (95% CI, 0.00299-0.01220; P<0.001) and an average direct effect (ADE) of 0.0305 (95% CI, 0.0129-0.0488; P<0.001). Depression mediates 18.89% (95% CI, 0.0704-0.4096; P<0.001) of the association between sleep disorders and gallstones. Subgroup analyses showed significant mediation by depressive symptoms in individuals aged 40-59, males, and both obese and non-obese groups (all P<0.05), although no significant mediation was found in females (P>0.05). Conclusion This study demonstrates a significant association between sleep disorders and gallstones, with depressive symptoms playing a partial mediating role. Improving depressive symptoms may help reduce the risk of gallstones associated with sleep disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased emotional reactivity to stress, emotional dysregulation and sleep disturbances are interdependent trans-diagnostic processes that are present in internalising disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. This study investigated which objective and subjective parameters of stress reactivity, sleep and emotional processing would predict symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescents and young adults. METHODS Participants were adolescents and young adults between the ages of 14 to 21 (N = 106, 25[24 %] male, M age = 17.93). Heart rate, heart rate variability, and subjective stress levels were measured before, during and after a stress induction using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Questionnaires on internalising symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and sleep quality were used. For seven consecutive nights, objective sleep parameters were measured with a wearable device. RESULTS Heart rate and heart rate variability after (but not during) the stress induction and emotion dysregulation predicted depressive and anxiety symptoms. Lower subjective sleep quality (but not the objective sleep parameters) was associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS A cross-sectional design, no measurement of daily activity or naps, and only self-report measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as emotion dysregulation. CONCLUSION The findings of elevated cardiovascular activation after - but not during - the stress induction and emotion dysregulation underlines problems in regulating and recovering from stress as predictors of youth internalising psychopathology. Differences between subjective and objective measures of sleep and stress reactivity suggests a role of cognitive biases in these domains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health behaviors have been posited to partly explain the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and health (i.e., the behavioral explanation of health inequalities), yet few studies have examined whether health behaviors serve as pathways from adolescent SES to adult depressive symptoms. This study aimed to explore the effects of adolescent health behaviors on adult depressed mood using the adolescent pathway model (APM). METHODS Our sample consisted of n = 1109 Norwegians [45.5% female], who were surveyed from ages 13 to 40 across ten time points. Using linear regression analyses, we examined (1) the association between parental SES [household income and parental education] and adolescent health behaviors [breakfast regularity, leisure time physical activity (LTPA), difficulties falling asleep, alcohol consumption, and smoking], and (2) the associations between adolescent health behaviors and adult depressed mood, and whether these were moderated by indicators of parental SES. We also assessed how health behaviors are associated with social inequality in adult depressed mood. In this context, social inequality was defined as the covariance between adult SES (i.e., income and education) and adult depressed mood. RESULTS Higher household income predicted higher levels of LTPA, and higher parental education predicted greater breakfast regularity. None of the health behaviors were associated with adult depressed mood, nor did they show moderation by SES. Adolescent health behaviors did not independently account for social inequality in adult depressed mood. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests minimal socioeconomic differences in adolescent health behaviors, which do not significantly account for social inequalities in adult depressed mood. This offers limited support for the behavioral explanation of health inequalities within the framework of the APM. However, adolescent depressed mood emerges as the strongest predictor of adult depressed mood, highlighting its importance as a key focus for early intervention efforts.

Abstract
Recently the Swedish Public Health Agency published recommendations of a maximum of two-to-three hours of daily leisure screen time for adolescents aged 13-18, partly to promote better sleep (2024-Sep-02). Biologically and socially, adolescence is characterized by belated sleep times, and depressive effects of screen time can arise through sleep displacements. Theorized links between screen time, sleep, and depression, merited examination of four sleep mediators to determine their relative importance and determine which of them mediate future depression. Hypotheses were preregistered. Three-wave psychometric health data were collected from healthy Swedish students (N = 4810; 51% Boys; ages 12-16; N = 55 schools; n = 20 of 26 Stockholm municipalities). Multiple imputation bias-corrected missing data. Gender-wise Structural Equation Modelling tested four sleep facets as competing mediators (quality, duration, chronotype, social jetlag). The primary model result included the three first mediators to achieve acceptable fit indices (RMSEA = 0.02; SRMR = 0.03; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94). Screen time deteriorated sleep within three months and effect sizes varied between mediators (Beta weights ranged: 0.14-0.30) but less between genders. Among boys, screen time at baseline had a direct adverse effect on depression after twelve months (Beta = 0.02; p <0.038). Among girls, the depressive effect was mediated through sleep quality, duration, and chronotype (57, 38, 45% mediation). Social jetlag remained non-significant. This study supports a modernized 'screen-sleep-displacement theory'. It empirically demonstrates that screen-sleep displacements impact several aspects of sleep simultaneously. Displacements led to elevated depressive symptoms among girls but not boys. Boys may be more prone to externalizing symptoms due to sleep loss. Results could mirror potentially beneficial public health effects of national screen time recommendations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Youth depression disrupts the social and vocational transition into adulthood. Most depression burden is caused by recurring or chronic episodes. Identifying young people at risk for relapsing, recurring, or chronic depression is critical. We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the literature on prognostic factors for relapsing, recurrent, and chronic depression in young people. METHOD We searched the literature up (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase, CENTRAL, WHO ICTRP, ClinicalTrials.gov, bioRxiv, MedRxiv) to March 6, 2024, and included cohort studies and randomized trials that assessed any prognostic factor for relapse, recurrence, or chronicity of depression in young people (aged 10-25 years at baseline) with a minimum of a 3-month follow-up. We assessed individual study risk of bias of using the QUIPS tool and the certainty of evidence via the GRADE approach. We conducted random-effects meta-analyses with Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman adjustment when 3 or more estimates on the same prognostic factor were available. Qualitative synthesis was conducted to identify promising prognostic factors that could not be meta-analyzed. RESULTS A total of 76 reports of 46 studies (unique cohorts or trials) were included that tested 388 unique prognostic factors in 7,488 young people experiencing depression. The majority of the reports were at high risk of bias (87%). We conducted 22 meta-analyses on unadjusted, and 7 on adjusted, prognostic factors of a poor course trajectory (ie, combined relapse, recurrence, and chronicity). Female sex (adjusted; odds ratio [95% CI] = 1.49 [1.15, 1.93], p = .003), higher severity of depressive symptoms (unadjusted; standardized mean difference [95% CI] = 0.53 [0.33, 0.73], p < .001), lower global functioning (unadjusted; standardized mean difference [95% CI] = -0.35 [-0.60, -0.10], p = .005), more suicidal thoughts and behaviors (unadjusted; standardized mean difference [95% CI] = 0.52 [0.03, 1.01], p = .045), and longer sleep-onset latency (unadjusted; mean difference [95% CI] = 6.96 [1.48, 12.44] minutes, p = .013) at baseline predicted a poor course trajectory of depression. The certainty of the evidence was overall very low to moderate. Promising prognostic factors that could not be meta-analyzed included relational/interpersonal factors (friend relationships and family relationships/structure). CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrate the prognostic value of demographic and clinical factors for poor course trajectories of depression in young people. More research is needed to confirm the potential value of relational/interpersonal factors in predicting poor depression course. Limitations of the literature include the high risk of bias of included studies, which indicates that future studies should include large sample sizes and wider diversity of prognostic markers (eg, genetic and neurobiological) in multivariable models. The critical next step is to combine the identified prognostic factors and to evaluate their clinical value in identifying individuals at risk for a poor course trajectory of depression during youth, a life stage in which most of the disability and burden attributable to depression can be averted. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression and pain co-occur, even during adolescence. However, there is limited knowledge on the association between pain and lifetime depression, and which biopsychosocial measures are associated with this co-occurrence. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) two-year follow-up. We explored associations between the presence and characteristics of past month pain (intensity, duration, activity limitations, and number of pain sites) and lifetime depression using logistic regression. We explored associations of brain structure, physical, behavioural, emotional, social, and cognitive measures with lifetime depression and past month pain compared to having had one or neither condition using multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 5211 adolescents (mean age = 12.0 years) who had: (1) no lifetime mental ill-health and no pain (n = 3327); (2) pain only (n = 1407); (3) lifetime depressive disorder but no pain (n = 272); and (4) lifetime depressive disorder and pain (n = 205) were included. Pain presence was associated with lifetime depression (OR[95%CI]: 1.76 [1.45, 2.13], p < 0.001). Pain-related activity limitations (1.13 [1.06, 1.21], p < 0.001) and the number of pain sites (1.06 [1.02, 1.09], p < 0.001) were associated with lifetime depression. Various behavioural, emotional, social, and cognitive, but not brain structure or physical measures, were associated with lifetime depression and past month pain. LIMITATIONS Longitudinal analyses should validate prognostic markers for predicting co-occurring depression and pain. CONCLUSIONS Results support an association between the presence and characteristics of pain and lifetime depression during adolescence and could indicate the need for more integrated recognition and clinical care of youth experiencing both depression and pain.

Abstract
The aims of the present study were: (1) to examine the association between meeting the 24-h movement guidelines and depressive symptoms among U.S. adolescents; (2) to analyze the temporal trends of this association; and (3) to test whether sex, age, or race/ethnicity moderate these associations. This is a cross-sectional study using repeated data collection from the high school Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS), involving 45,297 adolescents in the US (49.7% females). Data were collected bi-annually between 2011 and 2021. These surveys represent cross-sectional snapshots rather than a longitudinal study, capturing data at distinct points in time across multiple years. The three 24-h movement guidelines, including guidelines for physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration were assessed by self-reported questions. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the question "During the past 12 months, did you ever feel so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row that you stopped doing your usual activities?" with yes/no answer options. A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was employed to gauge the association between adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines (exposure) and the likelihood of having depressive symptoms (outcome). The year of data collection was included as a random intercept in the mixed-effects model to account for potential variations in depressive symptoms across different time points. The model was further adjusted for covariates, including sex, age, race/ethnicity, alcohol and tobacco consumption, school bullying, cyberbullying, and excess weight. Adolescents meeting all three 24-h movement guidelines (physical activity, screen time, and sleep) had the lowest probability of depressive symptoms (21.3%, 95% CI 17.3-25.3%) compared to those meeting none (37.6%, 95% CI 33.4-41.8%). Significant protective effects were observed across all adherence levels (p < 0.05). Over the 2011-2021 period, adherence remained consistently associated with reduced depressive symptoms, with the strongest effects seen in 2019 and 2021. Younger adolescents, males, and White individuals showed the greatest benefits, while females, older adolescents, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and individuals from other racial/ethnic groups exhibited weaker protective effects despite adherence. Findings from the present study highlight the importance of encouraging adherence to 24-h movement guidelines as a potential strategy to reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents. Notably, the protective effects of adherence varied across sociodemographic groups, with younger adolescents, females, and White individuals experiencing the greatest benefits.

Abstract
Background Sleep is foundational for adolescent psychosocial outcomes though often compromised by normative developmental changes and external factors. Methods This cross-sectional study examined sleep quality as a mechanism linking stress and psychosocial outcomes and explored gender differences. Results Adolescents (N = 236; Mean = 15.66; SD = 1.07, 46.19% female) completed self-report measures assessing sleep quality and psychosocial outcomes. Structural equation modeling was used to test the potential mediating effect of sleep quality on associations between stress and psychosocial outcomes. Results indicated sleep quality accounted for 82.0% of the total effect of stress on school functioning (β = -0.45, p < 0.001) and 61.9% of the total effect of stress on pain (β = 0.14, p < 0.001). A larger indirect effect of sleep quality on school functioning (βdiff = -0.27, p = 0.006) emerged for boys than girls, and the effect of sleep quality on pain was significant only for girls (β = 0.20, p = 0.003, 65.0% of total effect). Conclusion Sleep quality explained a large proportion of the cross-sectional association between stress and school functioning and pain. Sleep quality represents a modifiable transdiagnostic pathway that may buffer the effects of stress in adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper reviews the literature evaluating psychological treatments to improve sleep quality in young adult university students. METHOD Participants (N = 6179) were young adult (aged 18-30 years) university students. Databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, EMBASE and Medline) were searched for randomized controlled trials evaluating psychological treatments for sleep disturbance in university students. The search date was 20 September 2024. RESULTS 22 original trials met inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that psychological interventions outperformed control groups (n = 14) on improving sleep quality (g = 0.50, 95%CI:0.26-0.73). There were significantly different effect sizes found between studies that evaluated cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBT-I; n = 6, g = 0.72, CI: 0.43-1.02) versus studies that evaluated mindfulness interventions (n = 5, g = 0.16, 95% CI: -0.18-0.51). CONCLUSIONS Psychological treatments improve sleep quality for young adult university students. While CBT-I showed larger effect sizes than interventions focused on mindfulness, further research is needed to verify if this reflects a true difference in the efficacy of the interventions.

Abstract
Background Left-behind children in China face challenges in sleep patterns, technology use, and mental health. This study uses an individual-centered approach to derive behavioral profiles associated with depressive symptoms. Methods Data from 131,586 left-behind children aged 8 to 18 years from the Chinese Psychological Health Guard for Children and Adolescents Project were analyzed. Participants were recruited from 569 centers across schools, community institutes, orphanages, and children's hospitals throughout China. Latent class analysis was conducted using weekday and weekend sleep duration and smartphone use as indicators. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results Four distinct classes emerged: Sufficient Sleep Low Users (23.6%), Moderate Sleep Medium Users (25.2%), Limited Sleep High Users (22.1%), and Healthy Sleep Low Users (29.2%). Significant differences in CES-D scores were found between classes (F(3, 131579) = 4929, p <.001, η² = 0.101). The Limited Sleep High Users class reported the highest levels of depressive symptoms (M = 11.60, SE = 0.0658), while the Sufficient Sleep Low Users class reported the lowest (M = 3.67, SE = 0.0346). A linear relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms was observed. Significant weekday-weekend differences in smartphone use were noted in the unhealthy categories. Conclusions This study reveals complex associations between sleep patterns, smartphone use, and depressive symptoms among left-behind children. The identified behavioral profiles provide insights into population heterogeneity and inform targeted intervention strategies. Findings emphasize the importance of addressing both sleep and technology use in mental health initiatives for this vulnerable population.

AIM Irregularities with sleep patterns and behaviours are commonly observed in Australia, but there is lack of information regarding sleep patterns among Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adults. This study explores sleep patterns in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adults, comparing it with non-Indigenous Australian adults in addition to investigating any potential effects on daytime behaviour. METHODS A total of 730 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples aged 18 years and above were included in the study. The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire on various aspects of sleep, such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, feeling well-rested upon waking, snoring loudly, gasping/choking during sleep, use of prescription medication and experiencing fatigue or sleepiness during the day. Additionally, the participants were interviewed using the 'Top End Sleepiness Scale' to report increased sleepiness during daily activities. The responses were compared with those of non-Indigenous Australians in the 2016 Sleep Health Foundation national survey, using questions that measures similar variables. RESULTS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples experienced higher rates of sleep disturbances, including difficulty in falling asleep and waking in the night. Snoring and breathing pauses during sleep were more common in middle-aged men, and sleeping difficulties and daytime symptoms related to insufficient or unrefreshing sleep were more common in women. Sleep issues increased with age among adult Australians but were more common in the age group of 25-34 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. CONCLUSION The data suggest that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults report irregularities in sleep patterns. Early interventions and management of sleep habits could potentially have benefits for overall physical and mental health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Extant literature has linked sleep disturbance to depressive symptoms. However, the coexistence of naturally occurring sleep profiles among adolescents and the prospective associations between sleep profiles and depressive symptoms remain poorly understood. This study aims to uncover sleep patterns in Chinese adolescents based on a comprehensive set of sleep features (e.g., latency, daytime dysfunction, etc.) derived from the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and investigate the relationship between these profiles and subsequent depressive symptoms mediated by positive and negative coping styles. METHODS Five thousand five hundred five adolescents from Shandong province, China, enrolled (Mage = 16.83 years; 49.9% girls) in a two-wave longitudinal study (T1 in August 2023; T2 in February 2024). Latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted to identify adolescent sleep patterns. Mediation and sensitivity analyses were used to examine prospective associations between sleep patterns, coping styles, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS Four qualitatively distinct sleep profiles emerged: Healthy Sleepers (18.9%), Latency but Functioning Sleepers (13.6%), Efficient but Dysfunctional Sleepers (57.5%), and Medicated Maladaptive Sleepers (10.0%). Using the Healthy Sleepers as a reference group, Latency but Functional Sleepers, Efficient but Dysfunctional Sleepers, and Medicated Maladaptive Sleepers all predicted subsequent depressive symptoms through positive coping styles rather than negative coping styles. The relative indirect effects were 0.19, 0.19, and 0.32, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The study underscored that adolescents exhibit distinct sleep patterns, and specific sleep profiles may be prospectively associated with depressive symptoms mediated by positive coping styles.

Abstract
Pre-sleep worrying is associated with sleep disturbance, which in turn is associated with impaired affective wellbeing. However, studies examining the fine-grained temporal order of these variables are still lacking. In particular, within-person mediation of the association between pre-sleep worrying and the following day's affective wellbeing by subjective and objective indicators of sleep has not been tested yet. This study investigates the extent to which pre-sleep worrying predicts positive/negative affect the following day, and whether subjective/objective sleep disturbances are possible mediators for this relationship. Data from two experience sampling studies were pooled for the analyses, resulting in a total sample of 220 participants aged between 18 and 30 years (M = 23.2 years, SD = 2.8). The hypotheses were tested at both the between- and within-subject level using causal mediation analysis. The within-subject analyses revealed partial mediation of the relationship between pre-sleep worrying and positive as well as negative affect the next day by subjective sleep quality. By contrast, sleep as measured by actigraphy appears not to be relevant for the link between pre-sleep worrying and affective wellbeing the following day. Baseline levels of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances did not moderate the associations between pre-sleep worrying, sleep indices and affective states the following day. Improving perceived sleep quality by addressing pre-sleep worrying could be a potential avenue to enhance affective wellbeing and promote better mental health in young adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inadequate sleep duration and sleep-related problems are highly prevalent among adolescents and pose a significant health risk during a critical development stage. This study seeks to explore associations between sleep and suicidal ideation among adolescents. METHODS Cross-sectional questionnaire data from the baseline wave (2016-2018) of a cohort of 12- to 16-year-old Swedish adolescents (n = 4433, 50.39% girls) were analyzed. A split-sample approach was used for exploratory analyses and model selection. Logistic regression was used to estimate the associations between suicidal ideation and self-reported sleep parameters (weekday sleep duration, sleep quality), both adjusted and unadjusted for depression. RESULTS Adolescents with suicidal ideation slept on average 60 min less on weekdays and reported worse sleep quality compared to those without suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with weekday sleep duration (p = 0.0267) and self-perceived sleep quality (p = 0.0003). Associations remained after controlling for depression. CONCLUSIONS Sleep problems in adolescents are associated with suicidal ideation, beyond the effect of depression. Findings may have implications for screening and suicide prevention among clinical populations of adolescents, as well as for public health interventions aimed at promoting sleep and mental health in adolescents.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality is common during the postpartum period due to nighttime feeding and frequent nocturnal awakenings of infants. In addition, the condition may worsen among postpartum women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), affecting their capacity to care for their child. Therefore, this study will provide baseline information by assessing the burden of poor sleep quality and associated factors among HIV-positive and negative postpartum women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Objective The aim of this study was to assess poor sleep quality and its associated factors among HIV-positive and negative postpartum women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2023. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from 20 March to 20 May 2023, and a systematic random sampling technique was employed to obtain a total of 535 study subjects. An interviewer-administered questionnaire and chart review were used to collect the data. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the outcome variable with a cutoff point ≥5. Binary logistic regression was employed to check the association of each independent variable with the outcome variable. Variables having a p-value of less than 0.05 in multivariable analysis were considered statistically significant and an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed. Results In this study, the overall prevalence of poor sleep quality among postpartum women was 56.3% [95% CI (51.9, 60.6)]. Poor sleep quality prevalence among HIV-positive and -negative women was 80% and 50.5%, respectively. Being HIV-positive [AOR = 2.38, 95% CI (1.31, 4.32)], being divorced [AOR = 4.5, 95% CI (1.55, 13)], and having a family history of mental illness [AOR = 1.89, 95% CI (1.16, 3.1)], depression [AOR = 1.93 (1.11, 3.3)], and anxiety [AOR = 2.76, 95% CI (1.8, 4.2)] among postpartum women and poor social support [AOR = 6, 95% CI (1.63, 22.4)] among HIV-positive women were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Conclusion and recommendation This study revealed that the prevalence of poor sleep quality was higher among HIV-positive postpartum women compared to HIV-negative women. It would be better if professionals routinely assess postpartum women for sleep quality and focus on HIV-positive women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Social network site addiction is strongly correlated with sleep quality among adolescents. However, the underlying mechanisms driving these relationships require further exploration. This study aims to supplement the understanding of the psychological mechanisms linking social network site addiction and sleep quality by investigating depression as a mediating factor and difficulty describing feelings as a moderating factor. METHODS A self-report survey was conducted with 1,670 adolescents in China, assessing social network site addiction, sleep quality, depression, and difficulty describing feelings. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed on these variables, followed by the construction of a moderated mediation model. RESULTS Social network site addiction was significantly positively correlated with sleep quality, depression, and difficulty describing feelings among adolescents. Difficulty describing feelings was also significantly positively correlated with depression. Depression partially mediated the relationship between social network site addiction and sleep quality, while difficulty describing feelings intensified the relationship between social network site addiction and depression. CONCLUSION This study further elucidates the psychological mechanisms linking social network site addiction and sleep quality in adolescents. Depression acts as a mediating factor, while difficulty describing feelings strengthens the relationship between social network site addiction and depression. These findings highlight the role of difficulty describing feelings in the interplay between social network site addiction and sleep quality, offering valuable insights for a more comprehensive understanding and targeted interventions aimed at improving sleep quality in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep is often compromised in adolescents, affecting their health and quality of life. This pilot-study was conducted to evaluate if implementing brief-behavioral and sleep-hygiene education with mindfulness intervention may positively affect sleep-health in adolescents. METHOD Participants in this community-based non-randomized cohort-study volunteered for intervention (IG)- or control-group (CG). Sleep was recorded during regular school-schedule for 3-school-nights and 2-non-school-nights with an FDA-cleared/EU-Medical Device Regulation (CE-2862) compliant home sleep test, and Questionnaires were utilized to evaluate chronotype, sleepiness, insomnia-, anxiety- and depression-symptoms. The four-week intervention included sleep-hygiene education, mindfulness- and breathing-practices for one-hour, twice weekly. Data was collected during the last-week of February and first two-weeks of March 2023 and repeated after intervention. RESULTS Fifty-five participants completed the study, IG (86%) and CG (77%). Average age was 17.3-years and prevalence of severe social-jetlag (SJL) 72%. Participants who quit participation (n = 10) after baseline data-collection all females (3-IG/7-CG) in comparison to participants who completed the study were sleepier than the IG and CG (+ 2.6-p = 0.04; + 3.8-p = 0.001), with more symptoms of insomnia- (+ 3.8-p = 0.002; + 4.7-p < 0.0001), and depression (+ 16.7-p < 0.0001; + 19.6-p < 0.0001), and report being later-chronotypes, (-18.2, p < 0.0001;-13.1, p < 0.0001). On average the IG advanced sleep-onset (32-min; p = 0.030), decreased SJL (37-min; p = 0.011) and increased total sleep time (TST, 29-min; p = 0.088) compared to the CG. Average sleep duration did not differ significantly comparing IG and CG after intervention. Stratifying participants with severe SJL (> 2-h) at baseline; 1) responders (61%) advanced sleep-onset on non-school-nights (96-min) and decreased SJL (103-min; p < 0.001) 2) non-responders (39%) increased sleep-duration on school-nights (36-min) and non-school-nights (63-min) but maintained severe-SJL. CONCLUSION Teacher-lead sleep-education and mindfulness program can improve TST and SJL in adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite evidence supporting sleep's role in the development and maintenance of depression, mechanisms underlying this association in young people are less established. Negative interpretation bias (the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations negatively) and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) are important candidate mechanisms. Whilst negative interpretation bias is implicated in depression development, it is a transdiagnostic process and may result from insomnia. Yet, research relating to these constructs is lacking. RNT is another transdiagnostic process implicated in association between negative interpretation bias, depression and insomnia. However, an elaborated model that includes both mechanisms is yet to be tested. It was hypothesised that negative interpretation bias and RNT would sequentially mediate the relationship between sleep/insomnia and depressive symptoms in young people. DESIGN The associations predicted by this hypothesis were tested via cross-sectional mediation in a sample of 214 participants (Mage = 19.19 years, SD = 1.67, Rangeage = 17-24 years, 20% male). METHODS Participants completed questionnaire measures of insomnia symptoms, depression symptoms and RNT, an ambiguous scenarios task and a 1-week sleep diary. RESULTS Results were consistent with negative interpretation bias and RNT as sequential mechanisms which partially account for the relationship between sleep (i.e., insomnia severity and sleep parameters) and depression. CONCLUSIONS This study supports negative interpretation bias and RNT as mechanisms linking insomnia and depression in young people, as the predicted associations between these variables were observed. Future research should investigate the causal/directional associations. However, results support theoretical models, and suggest sleep, interpretation bias and RNT may be important processes to target in preventing and treating depression.

Abstract
Background: Sleep and mental health are crucial to elite youth athletes, who face combined pressures of training, competition, school, and social commitments. We examined the association between sleep and depression in elite youth athletes. Methods: We analyzed data of 248 Korean world-class youth athletes (aged 13-19 years). The athletes completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: Overall, 50.4% of the athletes were considered poor sleepers (global PSQI score ≥ 5.5); 23.8% reported depressive symptoms (CES-D score ≥ 16). Depression was 4.26 times (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.00-9.09, p < 0.001) more likely in poor than in good sleepers. Odds of depression were increased with poor subjective sleep quality (odds ratio [OR]: 4.62; 95%CI, 2.10-10.18, p < 0.001), prolonged sleep latency (OR: 2.45: 95% CI, 1.28-4.69, p < 0.01), increased sleep disturbances (OR: 3.98: 95% CI, 1.83-8.63, p < 0.001), and daytime dysfunction (OR: 3.28; 95% CI, 1.67-6.44, p < 0.001). Depressive symptoms were associated with worse sleep, particularly poor subjective sleep quality, prolonged sleep latency, increased sleep disturbances, and increased daytime dysfunction. Conclusions: These results suggest that depressive symptoms are associated with poor sleep in the elite youth athlete population.

Abstract
Purpose In China, stringent and long-lasting infection control measures, which were called "dynamic zero-COVID policy", have significantly affected the mental health of college students, particularly concerning depressive and insomnia symptoms. This study aims to investigate how depressive and insomnia symptoms evolved among Chinese college students throughout the pandemic, including the beginning and end of the dynamic zero-COVID policy period. Patients and Methods We conducted a 2-years longitudinal survey involving 1102 college students, collecting data at three key time points. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and insomnia symptoms were measured with the Youth Self-rating Insomnia Scale-8. Three contemporaneous symptom networks and two cross-lagged panel networks were constructed. Results In the current sample, the prevalence of clinically significant depressive symptoms was 6.1%, 8.9%, and 7.7% during the first, second, and third waves, respectively. The prevalence of clinically significant insomnia symptoms was 8.1%, 13.0%, and 14.1%. Over time, the severity of depressive and insomnia symptoms and network density increased, persisting at least one year after the pandemic and control measures ended. "Difficulty initiating sleep" bridged the two disorders, while "anhedonia" played a pivotal role in triggering and sustaining other symptoms. Conclusion This study underscores the lasting impact of the evolving zero-COVID policy on depressive and insomnia symptoms among college students, elucidating the underlying interaction mechanisms. There is a pressing need for a more comprehensive evaluation of the implementation of restrictive public policies, taking into account their potential long-term consequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of depressive symptom in adolescents has sharply increased over the past decade. Depressive symptom during adolescence could hinder the development of social, cognitive, and psychological competencies, potentially influencing young adults' lifestyle factors. This study aimed to identify trajectories of depressive symptom from adolescence to early adulthood and evaluated their association with lifestyle factors in early adulthood. METHODS Data was collected from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was assessed during the 2016, 2018, and 2020. Group - based trajectory modeling was used to identify trajectories of depressive symptom over a 5 - year follow - up. We used binary logistic regression analyze to explore the relationship between depressive symptom trajectories and lifestyle factors. RESULTS We identified four trajectories of depressive symptom, characterized by maintained low scores (non - symptom); moderately high scores (moderately high symptom); consistently high scores (persistently high symptom); and low starting scores that steadily increased (increasing symptom). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the ORs for smoking were 2.95 (1.47, 5.97) for the "persistently high symptom" trajectory comparing to the "non - symptom" trajectory. CONCLUSION The depressive symptom trajectories was associated with unhealthy lifestyle factors. Future studies are needed to determine whether depressive symptom might serve as early indicators prompting adolescents to make psychological changes that could reduce the risk of unhealthy lifestyle factors in the later life.

Abstract
Exposure to air pollution is associated with higher risk for psychopathology; however, the mechanisms underlying this association are not clear. Dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress has been implicated in depression. Here, we estimated annual exposure to particulate matter (PM) from diesel emissions in 170 9- to 15-year-old adolescents (56 % female) using their residential addresses and data from nearby monitoring sites. We obtained salivary cortisol samples from participants while they completed a social stress task and calculated area under the curve with respect to ground (AUCg) and with respect to increase (AUCi) in order to assess cortisol responsivity during stress. Participants also reported on their depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances. Greater exposure to diesel PM was associated with lower cortisol output (AUCg) during stress, which was associated with higher depressive symptoms, particularly for adolescents with more sleep disturbances. Importantly, these effects were independent of household and neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and exposure to early adversity. Thus, HPA-axis dysfunction may be one mechanism through which environmental pollutants affect adolescents' mental health.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) are a volatile mixture of bioactive compounds extracted from aromatic plants. The composition of EOs varies, which majorly depends on the extraction methods and plant parts. Aromatherapy using EOs has been reported for its several beneficial effects in humans. Aromatherapy is considered a complementary and/ or adjuvant therapeutic approach for treating several illnesses, especially to improve mental health and well-being. The incidence of sleep disorders, specifically insomnia, is nowadays increased, possibly due to urbanization and lifestyle. The studies showed that EOs-based treatments using lavender EO, bergamot EO, cinnamon EO, and rosemary EO (alone or in combinations) could improve sleep quality, duration, and deprivation in healthy subjects and patients, those who suffer from sleep-related issues. The current manuscript details the outcomes of EO-based treatments on the sleep quality of humans and the possible mechanisms associated with the health-promoting properties of EOs. Also, the toxicity and adverse effects of EOs have been discussed. The study indicated that EOs are potent adjuvant therapeutic candidates to manage mood-associated complications in humans. Moreover, the aromatherapeutic field requires detailed studies on toxicity and dose determination, which could provide safe and effective therapeutic results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In 2016, globally, suicide was the second leading cause of death amongst those aged 15 to 29 years. Self-harm is increasingly common among young people in many countries, particularly among women and girls. The risk of suicide is elevated 30-fold in the year following hospital presentation for self-harm, and those with suicidal ideation have double the risk of suicide compared with the general population. Self-harm and suicide in young people are significant public health issues that cause distress for young people, their peers, and family, and lead to substantial healthcare costs. Educational settings are widely acknowledged as a logical and appropriate place to provide prevention and treatment. A comprehensive, high-quality systematic review of self-harm and suicide prevention programmes in all education settings is thus urgently required. This will support evidence-informed decision making to facilitate rational investment in prevention efforts in educational settings. Suicide and self-harm are distressing, and we acknowledge that the content of this review is sensitive as the data outlined below represents the lived and living experience of suicidal distress for individuals and their caregivers. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of interventions delivered in educational settings to prevent or address self-harm and suicidal ideation in young people (up to the age of 25) and examine whether the relative effects on self-harm and suicide are modified by education setting. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Common Mental Disorders Specialised Register, CENTRAL, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ERIC, Web of Science Social Science Citation Index, EBSCO host Australian Education Index, British Education Index, Educational Research Abstracts to 28 April 2023. SELECTION CRITERIA We included trials where the primary aim was to evaluate an intervention specifically designed to reduce self-harm or prevent suicide in an education setting. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), cluster-RCTs, cross-over trials and quasi-randomised trials were eligible for inclusion. Primary outcomes were self-harm postintervention and acceptability; secondary outcomes included suicidal ideation, hopelessness, and two outcomes co-designed with young people: better or more coping skills, and a safe environment, with more acceptance and understanding. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used standard methodological procedures as expected by Cochrane. Two review authors independently selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. We analysed dichotomous data as odds ratios (ORs) and continuous data as standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We conducted random-effects meta-analyses and assessed certainty of evidence using the GRADE approach. For co-designed outcomes, we used vote counting based on the direction of effect, as there is a huge variation in the data and the effect measure used in the included studies. MAIN RESULTS We included 51 trials involving 36,414 participants (minimum 23; maximum 11,100). Twenty-seven studies were conducted in secondary schools, one in middle school, one in primary school, 19 in universities, one in medical school, and one across education and community settings. Eighteen trials investigated universal interventions, 11 of which provided data for at least one meta-analysis, but no trials provided data for self-harm postintervention. Evidence on the acceptability of universal interventions is of very low certainty, and indicates little or no difference between groups (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.36 to 1.67; 9 studies, 8528 participants). Low-certainty evidence showed little to no effect on suicidal ideation (SMD -0.02, 95% CI -0.23 to 0.20; 4 studies, 379 participants) nor on hopelessness (MD -0.01, 95% CI -1.98 to 1.96; 1 trial, 121 participants). Fifteen trials investigated selective interventions, eight of which provided data for at least one meta-analysis, but only one trial provided data for self-harm postintervention. Low-certainty evidence indicates that selective interventions may reduce self-harm postintervention slightly (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.06 to 2.43; 1 trial, 148 participants). While no trial provided data for hopelessness, little to no effect was found on acceptability (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.5 to 2.0; 6 studies, 10,208 participants; very low-certainty evidence) or suicidal ideation (SMD 0.04, 95% CI -0.36 to 0.43; 2 studies, 102 participants; low-certainty evidence). Seventeen trials investigated indicated interventions, 14 of which provided data for at least one meta-analysis, but only four trials provided data for self-harm postintervention and two reported no events in both groups. Low-certainty evidence suggests that indicated interventions may slightly reduce self-harm postintervention (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.02 to 1.76; 2 studies, 76 participants). There is also low-certainty evidence indicating that these interventions may decrease the odds of non-suicidal self-injury (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.24 to 1.79; 2 studies, 89 participants). Evidence of a slight decrease in acceptability in the intervention group is of low certainty (OR 1.44, 95% CI 0.86 to 2.42; 10 studies, 641 participants). Low-certainty evidence shows that indicated interventions may slightly reduce suicidal ideation (SMD -0.33, 95% CI -0.55 to -0.10; 10 studies, 685 participants) and may result in little to no difference in hopelessness postintervention (SMD -0.27, 95% CI -0.55 to 0.01; 6 studies, 455 participants). There were mixed findings regarding the effect of suicide prevention interventions on a range of constructs relevant to coping skills and safe environment. None of the trials, however, measured the impact of improvements in these constructs on self-harm or suicidal ideation. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS While this review provides an update on the evidence about interventions targeting self-harm and suicide prevention in education settings, there remains significant uncertainty about the impact of these interventions. There are some promising findings but large replication studies are needed, as are studies that examine the combination of different intervention approaches, and can be delivered in a safe environment and implemented over a long period of time. Further research is required to understand and measure outcomes that are meaningful to young people with lived experience, as they want coping skills and safety of the environment in which they conduct their everyday lives to be measured as key outcomes in future trials.

Abstract
Insomnia is common in adolescents with associated negative health consequences. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia interventions on insomnia symptoms and subjective sleep quality in adolescents aged 10-19 years. Key electronic databases, including CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus, were systematically searched from inception to October 2024, and five randomised controlled trials met inclusion criteria for qualitative synthesis. Four randomised controlled trials, examining a total of 527 participants, were included in the meta-analysis. One randomised controlled trial employing a hybrid cluster design was excluded in quantitative analyses due to the number of clusters and sizes not reported. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia delivered to adolescents with insomnia improved subjective sleep quality and insomnia symptoms, with effect sizes (Hedge's g) of 0.4 and 1.04, respectively. Our findings provide support for the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia in the treatment of adolescents with insomnia regardless of delivery modality. Further high-quality randomised controlled trials are required to strengthen our findings and understand how best to deliver cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia to adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep is important for adolescent health. The unique needs of suprabinary youth (youth with gender identities outside of the gender binary), along with the growing number of youth with these identities, underscores the need to better understand sleep health within this population. The current study's objectives were to (1) examine differences in sleep health between suprabinary and binary youth and (2) explore how social support, peer victimization, and technology use accounted for these differences. METHODS Data were drawn from the 2017/2018 Health Behavior in School Aged Children Survey. Adolescents (individuals ages 14 to 17, n = 10,186), indicated whether they were suprabinary (n = 182) or binary (n = 10,004), and completed measures of sleep health (difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying awake, weekday and weekend sleep length), covariates (age, family affluence, race/ethnicity, depressive symptoms), as well as variables that may account for differences between suprabinary and binary youth (family, friend, and teacher support, as well as peer victimization, and technology use before bed). RESULTS Suprabinary youth reported worse sleep health on all outcomes, and differences persisted for both difficulty falling asleep and weekday sleep hours accounting for covariates. Significant indirect effects between suprabinary status were observed across all sleep outcomes for family support and school climate. Indirect effects for sleep quality were also observed via peer victimization. CONCLUSIONS Findings support the relevance of looking at basic health processes like sleep to better understand how the stressors associated with suprabinary status impact health outcomes among this vulnerable population.

Abstract
Sleep restriction therapy is a behavioural component within cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and is an effective standalone treatment for insomnia, but its effect on depressive symptoms remains unclear. This review aimed to synthesise and evaluate the impact of single-component sleep restriction therapy on depressive symptoms relative to a control intervention. We searched electronic databases and sleep-related journals for randomised controlled trials and uncontrolled clinical trials, published from 1 January 1986 until 19 August 2023, that delivered sleep restriction therapy to adults with insomnia. Random-effects meta-analysis of standardised mean differences and Cochrane risk of bias assessment were performed on randomised controlled trials, while uncontrolled clinical trials were discussed narratively. The meta-analysis was pre-registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42020191803). We identified seven randomised controlled trials (N = 1102) and two uncontrolled clinical trials (N = 22). Findings suggest that sleep restriction therapy is associated with a medium effect for improvement in depressive symptoms at post-treatment (Nc = 6, g = -0.45 [95% confidence interval = -0.70 to -0.21], p < 0.001) and a small effect at follow-up (Nc = 4, g = -0.31 [95% confidence interval = -0.45 to -0.16], p < 0.001). Five of the seven included randomised controlled trials were judged to have a high risk of bias. Standalone sleep restriction therapy appears to be efficacious for improving depressive symptoms at post-treatment and follow-up. However, conclusions are tentative due to the small number of trials and because none of the trials was performed in a population with clinically defined depression. Large-scale trials are needed to test the effect of sleep restriction therapy in patients experiencing depression and insomnia. Findings also highlight the need to improve the standardisation and reporting of sleep restriction therapy procedures, and to design studies with more rigorous control arms to reduce potential bias.

Abstract
The chronotype of individuals has been found to be predictive of depression risk and associated with the severity of depression. However, since depression is a phenotypically heterogeneous disease, it seems improbable that chronotype plays a role in every instance of depression. This study investigates the association between the two, while considering possible symptom-specificity and non-linearity of the relationship, utilizing a large sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 5217; 54% female; Age: M = 52.65, SD = 18.76). Depression symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and chronotype was determined by calculating sleep midpoints. Further, we also explored the potential mediating role of systemic inflammation, measured by C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, in the chronotype-depression link. The findings substantiate previous research indicating late chronotypes to be associated with higher PHQ-9 sum scores, with a minimum in PHQ-9 at a sleep midpoint of 02:49. The study further differentiates between individual depression symptoms, uncovering varying patterns of association with chronotype. No significant effect of chronotype on levels of CRP was found, suggesting that the link between chronotype and depression symptoms may not be directly mediated and appears to be stable and independent from systemic inflammation. The study highlights the non-linear and symptom-specific nature of the chronotype-depression connection and suggests the need for further, longitudinal studies to elucidate causal mechanisms and potential mediators.

Abstract
Background: Adolescence is a period of significant psychological, physical, and social changes. During this time, adolescents face increasing responsibilities, such as making educational and career decisions, managing peer relationships, and becoming more independent from their families. These changes are often accompanied by mood fluctuations and altered sleep patterns. This study aimed to explore the relationships between bright- and dark-side hypomania, insomnia, and various dimensions of health-related quality of life (HRQOL), such as self-esteem, family and peer relationships, social acceptance, and autonomy. Methods: A total of 1475 participants in mid-adolescence (mean age: 13.4 years; range: 11-16 years; 48.8% males) completed a series of self-reported questionnaires covering sociodemographic information, hypomania, including dark and bright-side hypomania, insomnia, and HRQOL. Results: Compared to participants with no or dark-side hypomania, participants with bright-side hypomania reported better HRQOL. Bright-side hypomania was significantly associated with favorable relationships with parents and home, peer relationships, and the school environment and with less insomnia. In contrast, dark-side hypomania showed significant associations with lower scores for self-esteem, moods and emotional states, peer relationships, social acceptance, the school environment, and more insomnia. Conclusions: Among a larger sample of adolescents, bright- and dark-side hypomania were associated with a broad, though specific variety of aspects of HRQOL and insomnia. Given that standardized programs are available to improve insomnia and resilience as a proxy of psychological well-being, such interventions may have the potential to improve adolescents' psychological well-being and sleep quality concomitantly.

Abstract
Study Objectives These studies disentangle the relationships between wanting to nap (nap desire), actually napping (nap behavior), and depressed and anxious mood. Study 1 partially replicated and extended findings connecting napping and depressed and anxious mood. Study 2 explored the distinction between nap desire and behavior using a new, larger sample and a different technique. Methods Study 1 used a longitudinal, multimethod approach to understand napping and mood among undergraduate students in the United States (N = 104). In Study 2, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on adults over 25 in the continental United States (N = 1406), including items from the DASS-21 and questions about nap desire and behavior. Results Study 1 found a significant relationship between same-day napping behavior and depressed mood (M nap = 1.61, SE nap = 0.08 vs. M no nap = 1.44, SE no nap = 0.06, p = .018) but not anxious mood (p = .766). Study 2 partially replicated those findings; Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) showed that napping desire had a significant effect on anxious (F(1, 1291) = 6.86, p = .009, partial η2 = .005) and depressed mood (F(1, 1291) = 13.46, p < .001, partial η2 = .010), accounting for age, gender, and restedness, but napping behavior did not add to that effect. Conclusions Wanting to nap is related to greater depressed and anxious mood, but actual napping did not add to that relationship. These results have implications for clinicians using sleep assessment as a screening tool for mental health and highlight the need for further research on napping motivation.

Abstract
Introduction The high prevalence of mental disorders among adolescents calls for community-based and population-level prevention strategies. Diet is an important intervention target for primary prevention of mental disorders among adolescents. We used data from a large longitudinal study of Canadian adolescents (aged 14-18 y) to examine prospective associations between diet and mental health outcomes. Methods We estimated the effect of diet (ie, consumption of vegetables and fruit and sugar-sweetened beverages [SSBs]) at baseline on depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and psychological well-being (measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 scale, and Flourishing Scale, respectively) and at 1-year follow-up in a sample of 13,887 Canadian secondary school students who participated in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 cycles of the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol, Smoking, and Sedentary (COMPASS) behavior study. We applied linear mixed-effects methods informed by a directed acyclic graph. Sensitivity analyses assessed the robustness of the effect estimates to unmeasured confounding variables. Results Baseline SSB consumption was associated with greater severity of depressive (β = 0.04; 95% CI, 0.01-0.06) and anxiety (β = 0.02; 95% CI, 0-0.05) symptoms, particularly among male students, and poorer psychological well-being (β = -0.03; 95% CI, -0.05 to -0.01) at follow-up. Baseline vegetables and fruit consumption was positively associated with psychological well-being (β = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.03-0.10) but not other mental health outcomes at follow-up. Conclusion Our results support the notion that diet should be part of comprehensive mental health prevention and promotion interventions to reduce the prevalence of mental health disorders among adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction Adolescents' health and well-being are seriously threatened by suicidal behaviors, which have become a severe social issue worldwide. Suicide is one of the leading causes of mortality for adolescents in low and middle-income countries, with approximately 67,000 teenagers committing suicide yearly. Although an association between sleep disturbances (SDs) and suicidal behaviors has been suggested, data are still scattered and inconclusive. Therefore, to further investigate this association, we conducted a meta-analysis to verify if there is a link between SDs and suicidal behaviors in adolescents without diagnosed psychiatric disorders. Methods PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to August 30th, 2024. We included studies reporting the estimation of suicidal behaviors in adolescents from 12 to 21 years of age, with SDs and healthy controls. The meta-analysis was based on odds ratio (OR, with a 95% confidence interval ([CI]), estimates through inverse variance models with random-effects. Results The final selection consisted of 19 eligible studies from 9 countries, corresponding to 628,525 adolescents with SDs and 567,746 controls. We found that adolescents with SDs are more likely to attempt suicide (OR: 3.10; [95% CI: 2.43; 3.95]) and experience suicidal ideation (OR: 2.28; [95% CI 1.76; 2.94]) than controls. Conclusion This meta-analysis suggests that SDs are an important risk factor for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in healthy adolescents. Abstract
BACKGROUND This short communication explores the interrelationships between depressed mood and sleep disturbances in one-year postpartum period. METHODS Utilizing data from the Interaction of Gene and Environment of Depression during PostPartum Cohort (IGEDEPP) involving 3310 French postpartum women, we employed a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to analyze the relationships between these two symptoms, across three time points (immediate postpartum [<1 week after delivery], early postpartum [<2 months after delivery], and late postpartum [2 months to 1 years after delivery]). RESULTS Depressed mood significantly influences sleep disturbances in late postpartum (β = 0.096, z-value = 7.4; p < 0.001) but not in early postpartum (p-value = 0.9). We found no cross-lagged influence of sleep disturbances on depressed mood in early (p = 0.066) or in late postpartum (p = 0.060). Moreover, depressed mood and sleep disturbances in immediate postpartum are predictive of similar symptoms in the two other postpartum periods (between each of the three periods, p = 0.006 and p < 0.001 for depressed mood, and p = 0.039 and p < 0.001 for sleep disturbances), thus demonstrating the stability of these symptoms over time. LIMITATIONS Although conducted with a prospectively assessed cohort, this study faces limitations due to potential methodological biases. CONCLUSIONS This study is a pioneering analysis of mutual causal interactions between depressed mood and sleep disturbances in the postpartum period, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring, early detection, prevention of worsen outcomes and intervention on these symptoms.

Abstract
Introduction Nutrition, sleep and physical activity are termed the "big three" health enhancing behaviors (HEB) associated with psychological distress and wellbeing. This study sought to understand differential associations between an expanded group of HEB (nutrition, sleep, physical activity, mindfulness, social connectedness) and psychological distress/wellbeing in early adolescents. Methods Correlational and regression analyses were conducted in N=103 (51% females) adolescents (12.6 ± 0.3 years of age) recruited from the Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study. Results Higher scores on sleep, social connectedness and mindfulness scales were significantly associated with lower psychological distress scores. While higher scores on social connectedness and mindfulness scales were significantly associated with higher wellbeing scores. When adjusting for sex, nutrition, sleep, social connectedness and mindfulness accounted for a significant proportion of variance in the psychological distress model whereas physical activity and social connectedness accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in the wellbeing model. Discussions Overall findings make a strong case for expansion of the "big three" HEB to include mindfulness and social connectedness, especially given social connectedness emerged as the strongest predictor of both psychological distress and wellbeing. In addition, this research suggests that early adolescent nutrition, sleep quality, and mindfulness should be prioritized in efforts to reduce risk of difficulties, and physical activity prioritized as a protective factor for wellbeing in this population. Findings have implications for interventions, emphasizing the importance of addressing HEB factors comprehensively and tailoring strategies to the unique needs of early adolescents to foster positive mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Racial and ethnic minority adolescents living in urban settings experience sleep disparities. Few interventions have been developed to address these disparities. Guided by principles of participatory design and inclusion, our team developed a novel intervention that combined sleep hygiene education with mind-body integrative health (MBIH) practices to improve sleep quality among adolescents in New York City. The goal of this article is to describe our iterative development and design process, the final product, and future directions. Our participatory approach incorporated information from formative work with adolescents having lived experience, practitioners, and syntheses of published literature. The final intervention-Sleeping Healthy, Living Healthy-consists of six, 40-minute group sessions and one 20-minute individual session designed for high school students. Each session has a set of learning objectives, combining instruction, group activities, and discussions on sleep hygiene and MBIH topics. Our manualized intervention includes handouts created by a graphic design team that served as a review and reminder for home practice. We describe intervention implementation to two unique cohorts and detail our methods used to fine-tune the intervention between cohorts. Our partnership with and insights from both adolescents and practitioners serve as a guide for researchers aiming to use participatory methods to develop interventions to decrease health disparities in specific populations.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that major depressive disorder (MDD) patients exhibit structural and functional impairments, but few studies have investigated changes in higher-order coupling between structure and function. Here, we systematically investigated the effect of MDD on higher-order coupling between structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC). Each brain region was mapped into embedding vector by the node2vec algorithm. We used support vector machine (SVM) with the brain region embedding vector to distinguish MDD patients from health controls (HCs) and identify the most discriminative brain regions. Our study revealed that MDD patients had decreased higher-order coupling in connections between the most discriminative brain regions and local connections in rich-club organization and increased higher-order coupling in connections between the ventral attentional network and limbic network compared with HCs. Interestingly, transcriptome-neuroimaging association analysis demonstrated the correlations between regional rSC-FC coupling variations between MDD patients and HCs and α/β-hydrolase domain-containing 6 (ABHD6), β 1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-9(β3GNT9), transmembrane protein 45B (TMEM45B), the correlation between regional dSC-FC coupling variations and retinoic acid early transcript 1E antisense RNA 1(RAET1E-AS1), and the correlations between regional iSC-FC coupling variations and ABHD6, β3GNT9, katanin-like 2 protein (KATNAL2). In addition, correlation analysis with neurotransmitter receptor/transporter maps found that the rSC-FC and iSC-FC coupling variations were both correlated with neuroendocrine transporter (NET) expression, and the dSC-FC coupling variations were correlated with metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5). Further mediation analysis explored the relationship between genes, neurotransmitter receptor/transporter and MDD related higher-order coupling variations. These findings indicate that specific genetic and molecular factors underpin the observed disparities in higher-order SC-FC coupling between MDD patients and HCs. Our study confirmed that higher-order coupling between SC and FC plays an important role in diagnosing MDD. The identification of new biological evidence for MDD etiology holds promise for the development of innovative antidepressant therapies.

Abstract
Studies have shown that maladaptive parenting styles, particularly parental psychological control may be an important risk factor for emotional problems in adolescence. However, the potential mechanisms behind this association are still not fully understood. To fill the research gap, this study investigated the relationship between parental psychological control and depression and anxiety among adolescents. It also explored the mediating effect of bedtime procrastination and the moderating effect of neuroticism through a moderated mediation analysis. A sample of 665 adolescents (331 girls) were recruited from two secondary schools in southern China. All participants completed standardized self-report questionnaires measuring the severity of parental psychological control, bedtime procrastination, depression, anxiety, and neuroticism. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS macros. The results indicated that parental psychological control had a positive predictive effect on depression and anxiety among adolescents. Bedtime procrastination partially mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and depression, as well as parental psychological control and anxiety. Neuroticism was found to play a moderating role in the path from bedtime procrastination to depression and from bedtime procrastination to anxiety, with these effects being stronger for adolescents with higher levels of neuroticism. This study advances a deeper understanding of how and when or for whom parental psychological control is related to adolescents' severe depression and anxiety. Our findings suggest that intervention programs or strategies aimed at reducing parental psychological control and assisting adolescents in establishing healthy sleep hygiene practices should be developed to decrease the risk of depression and anxiety in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to adversity early in life (ELA) has been associated with elevated risk for depression during adolescence, particularly for females; the mechanisms underlying this association, however, are poorly understood. One potential mechanism linking ELA and sex differences in depressive symptoms is sleep disturbances, which increase during adolescence and are more common in females. Here, we examined whether sleep disturbances mediate the association between ELA and increases in depressive symptoms during adolescence and whether this mediation differs by sex. METHODS 224 (N = 132 females) youth were recruited at age 9-13 years and assessed every 2 years across three timepoints. At the first timepoint, we conducted extensive interviews about stressful events participants experienced; participants provided subjective severity ratings of events and we objectively scored the severity of each event. Self-reported sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms were assessed at all timepoints. We conducted linear mixed models to estimate both initial levels and changes in sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms, and moderated mediation analyses to test whether initial levels and/or changes in sleep disturbances mediated the association of ELA (objective and subjective) with increases in depressive symptoms across adolescence and whether the mediations differed by sex. RESULTS While higher initial levels and increases in sleep problems were uniquely associated with increases in depressive symptoms for males and females, they were related to ELA differently by sex. For females, greater ELA (both objectively and subjectively rated) was associated with higher initial levels of sleep problems, which in turn were associated with increases in depressive symptoms from early to late adolescence. In contrast, for males, ELA exposure was not associated with either initial levels of, or increases in, sleep problems. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the role of sleep disturbances during the transition to adolescence in mediating sex differences in the effects of ELA on depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In Chinese adolescents, the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and short sleep duration constitute a serious public health issue. This study investigates the association between depressive symptoms and sleep duration of Chinese adolescents on weekdays as well as weekends. METHODS A multistage random cluster selection was utilized to select 2660 adolescents in Taiyuan, China. The survey contents included demographic characteristics, sleep duration, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS About 41.95 % of students reported depressive symptoms with an average sleep duration of 7.71 ± 0.90 h. After adjusting for covariates, depressive symptoms were found to be positively correlated with sleep duration <6 h (OR = 1.88, 95 % CI: 1.20, 2.95) and 6 ~ h (OR = 1.61, 95 % CI: 1.18, 2.20) on weekdays, and sleep duration <6 h (OR = 2.10, 95 % CI: 1.17, 3.79) and 6 ~ hours (OR = 1.74, 95 % CI: 1.16, 2.62) on weekends compared with a sleep duration of 8 ~ hours. Only on weekdays, sleep duration of 7 ~ hours was positively correlated with depressive symptoms (OR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.05, 1.84). On weekends, it was not associated with depressive symptoms (OR = 1.06, 95%CI: 0.82, 1.39). In subgroup analyses, female students (OR = 2.88, 1.97, 1.50) and middle school students (OR = 3.50, 2.07, 1.50) were more likely to experience depressive symptoms on weekdays with a sleep duration of <6 h, 6 ~ hours and 7 ~ hours. LIMITATIONS Sleep duration and depressive symptoms were self-reported measures. CONCLUSION The study highlights that short sleep duration (< 7 h) increases the risk of depressive symptoms among adolescents regardless of weekdays or weekends. Just on weekdays, the sleep duration of 7 ~ hours was a risk factor for depressive symptoms. Further, gender, grade, and the only-child played significant modification effects between depressive symptoms and sleep duration. To conclude, this study will assist in the effective promotion of the education of adolescents' sleep health.

Abstract
Evidence supports a causal role of insomnia in the development and maintenance of depression, yet mechanisms underlying this association in young people are not well established. Attention biases have been implicated separately in the sleep and depression fields and represents an important candidate mechanism. Poor sleep may lead to a negative attention bias (characteristic of depression) by impacting attentional control. This study assessed the hypothesis that attentional control and negative attention bias would sequentially mediate the relationship between insomnia and depressive symptoms in an unselected sample of young people (17-24 years). Concerns have been raised regarding the psychometric properties of tasks used to measure attention bias, and a Dual-Probe Task is emerging as a more reliable measure. Participants (N = 275, Male = 59, Mage = 19.40) completed the Dual-Probe Task, a behavioural measure of attentional control, and self-report measures of insomnia and depression. Participants completed a one-week sleep diary. Results were consistent with negative attention bias, but not attentional control, as a mechanism which partially accounts for the relationship between sleep (i.e., insomnia severity, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep latency) and depression. This study highlights sleep and negative attention bias as potentially modifiable risk factors to reduce depressive symptoms in young people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between sleep patterns and young students' mental health, which is crucial for their development, remains understudied in rural China. Therefore, the relationship between sleep patterns and mental health among primary and junior high school students in rural China was examined. METHOD A total of 1592 primary and junior high school students from rural areas of Gansu Province were surveyed, and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) was utilized to assess mental health, alongside self-reported data on their daily sleep patterns. RESULTS Significant sleep inadequacies were identified: 28% of students received less than 8 h of sleep on weekdays, and 19% went to bed later than recommended. On weekends, 38% of students had delayed bedtimes, though only 7.2% received less than 8 h of sleep. Notably, a "U-shaped" relationship was uncovered between sleep duration and mental health for students on weekends, with optimal mental health correlated with receiving 10-11 h of sleep, while both shorter and longer sleep durations on weekends worsened outcomes. This pattern is absent on weekdays. Additionally, adequate sleep and an earlier bedtime was linked to a 6-8% decrease in mental health risks. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers seeking to enhance student mental well-being in rural settings, emphasizing the importance of implementing measures that promote balanced sleep habits among young students.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Social media has become a ubiquitous part of everyday life; however, evidence suggests patterns of social media use can affect sleep health in children and adolescents. This study aimed to examine the associations of intense and problematic social media use (SMU) with sleep-onset difficulties in adolescence. METHODS We analysed data from 212,613 adolescents aged 11-15 years (51.1% girls) from 40 European and North American countries that participated in the 2017/2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey. Intense SMU assessed how often respondents had online contact through social media, and problematic SMU was assessed by symptoms of addiction to social media. Sleep-onset difficulties were assessed using a self-reported item. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression was used to obtain the estimates. RESULTS Sleep-onset difficulties were more common among girls than boys (27.1% vs 20.8%). Intense SMU was significantly associated with sleep-onset difficulties in boys in 17 countries and in girls in 25 countries, while problematic SMU was significantly associated in most of the participating countries. Overall, exposure to problematic SMU alone was highly associated with sleep-onset difficulties both in girls (OR 2.20, 2.04-2.38) and boys (OR 1.88, 1.73-2.04), while the association estimates for intense SMU were smaller and comparable across gender (Girls: OR 1.27, 1.23-1.31; Boys: OR 1.22, 1.18-1.27). Sensitivity analyses supported the above findings. CONCLUSIONS Intense and/or problematic SMU were associated with sleep-onset difficulties across gender with associations being higher for problematic compared to intense SMU. Prospective research with objective measures is needed to understand the causal mechanisms underlying these relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common in adolescents and have detrimental impacts on physical and mental health and daily functioning. Evidence-based treatment like cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is often hard to access, and adolescents may not engage in and adhere to longer, clinician-delivered interventions. Brief, self-guided, and accessible sleep interventions are needed. OBJECTIVE To explore the user experience of a prototype online self-help single session sleep intervention developed for adolescents. METHODS Eleven participants aged 17-19 years (8 females, 3 males) took part in online retrospective think-aloud interviews. Participants first completed the prototype intervention independently and were then shown the intervention page by page and asked to verbalise their thoughts and experiences. Transcripts were analyzed thematically. RESULTS Participants found the intervention helpful. Four themes were generated - 'Educative: Learning, but more fun', 'Effortless: Quicker and Easier', 'Personalization: Power of Choice', and 'Positivity: Just Good Vibes'. The theme 'Educative: Learning, but more fun' encompassed two sub-themes 'Opportunity to Learn' and 'Aesthetics and Learning'. These themes reflected participants' views that the intervention was educative, personalised, solution-oriented and easy to use, but could incorporate more graphics and visuals to aid in learning and could be made more effortless and positive through modifications to its design. CONCLUSIONS Findings convey the importance of ensuring educative well-designed content, personalization, a positive tone, and ease of use while designing interventions targeting adolescents's sleep and mental health. They also indicate areas for further developing the intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between both self-reported and objective sleep variables and low-grade inflammation in children and adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) of moderate to severe symptom severity. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we examined twenty-nine children and adolescents diagnosed with MDD and twenty-nine healthy controls (HC). Following a one-week actigraphy assessment, comprehensive sleep evaluations were conducted, including a one-night sleep EEG measurement and self-reported sleep data. Plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was employed as a marker to assess low-grade inflammation. RESULTS No significant difference in hsCRP levels was observed between participants with MDD and HC. Furthermore, after adjusting for sleep difficulties, hsCRP exhibited no correlation with the severity of depressive symptoms. In HC, levels of hsCRP were not linked to self-reported and objective sleep variables. In contrast, depressed participants showed a significant correlation between hsCRP levels and increased subjective insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index; r = 0.41, p < 0.05), increased time spent in the N2 sleep stage (r = 0.47, p < 0.01), and decreased time spent in slow-wave sleep (r = - 0.61, p < 0.001). Upon additional adjustments for body mass index, tobacco use and depression severity, only the inverse association between hsCRP and time spent in slow-wave sleep retained statistical significance. Moderation analysis indicated that group status (MDD vs. HC) significantly moderates the association between slow-wave sleep and hsCRP. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that alterations in the architecture of slow-wave sleep may have a significant influence on modulating low-grade inflammatory processes in children and adolescents with MDD.
