Potential impacts of changing supply-water quality on drinking water distribution: A review

Impact of operational conditions on drinking water biofilm dynamics and coliform invasion potential

Biofilms within drinking water distribution systems serve as a habitat for drinking water microorganisms. However, biofilms can negatively impact drinking water quality by causing water discoloration and deterioration and can be a reservoir for unwanted microorganisms. In this study, we investigated whether indicator organisms for drinking water quality, such as coliforms, can settle in mature drinking water biofilms. Therefore, a biofilm monitor consisting of glass rings was used to grow and sample drinking water biofilms. Two mature drinking water biofilms were characterized by flow cytometry, ATP measurements, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and 16S rRNA sequencing. Biofilms developed under treated chlorinated surface water supply exhibited lower cell densities in comparison with biofilms resulting from treated groundwater. Overall, the phenotypic as well as the genotypic characteristics were significantly different between both biofilms. In addition, the response of the biofilm microbiome and possible biofilm detachment after minor water quality changes were investigated. Limited changes in pH and free chlorine addition, to simulate operational changes that are relevant for practice, were evaluated. It was shown that both biofilms remained resilient. Finally, mature biofilms were prone to invasion of the coliform, Serratia fonticola. After spiking low concentrations (i.e., ±100 cells/100 mL) of the coliform to the corresponding bulk water samples, the coliforms were able to attach and get established within the mature biofilms. These outcomes emphasize the need for continued research on biofilm detachment and its implications for water contamination in distribution networks.

IMPORTANCE

The revelation that even low concentrations of coliforms can infiltrate into mature drinking water biofilms highlights a potential public health concern. Nowadays, the measurement of coliform bacteria is used as an indicator for fecal contamination and to control the effectiveness of disinfection processes and the cleanliness and integrity of distribution systems. In Flanders (Belgium), 533 out of 18,840 measurements exceeded the established norm for the coliform indicator parameter in 2021; however, the source of microbial contamination is mostly unknown. Here, we showed that mature biofilms, are susceptible to invasion of Serratia fonticola. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding and managing biofilms in drinking water distribution systems, not only for their potential to influence water quality, but also for their role in harboring and potentially disseminating pathogens. Further research into biofilm detachment, long-term responses to operational changes, and pathogen persistence within biofilms is crucial to inform strategies for safeguarding drinking water quality.

N-nitrosamines in electroplating and printing/dyeing industrial wastewater treatment plants: Removal efficiency, environmental emission, and the influence on drinking water

The discharge of industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of N-nitrosamines to the aquatic environment can impair downstream source waters and pose potential risks to human health. However, the transport and fate of N-nitrosamines in typical industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs) and the influence of these effluents on source water and drinking water are still unclear. This study investigated nine N-nitrosamines in four full-scale electroplating (E-) and printing/dyeing (PD-) IWWTPs, two drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in the lower reaches of these IWWTPs, and the corresponding tap water in South China. The total concentrations of N-nitrosamines (∑NAs) were 382-10,600, 480-1920, 494-789, and 27.9-427 ng/L in influents, effluents, source water, and tap water, respectively. The compositions of N-nitrosamine species in different influents varied a lot, while N-nitrosodi-n-butylamine (NDBA) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) dominated in most of the effluents, source water, and tap water. More than 70 % N-nitrosamines were removed by wastewater treatment processes used in E-IWWTPs such as ferric-carbon micro-electrolysis (Fe/C-ME), while only about 50 % of N-nitrosamines were removed in PD-IWWTPs due to the use of chlorine reagent or other inefficient conventional processes such as flocculation by cationic amine-based polymers or bio-contact oxidation. Therefore, the mass fluxes of N-nitrosamines discharged from these industrial wastewaters to the environment in the selected two industrial towns were up to 14,700 mg/day. The results based on correlation and principal component analysis significantly demonstrated correlations between E-and PD-effluents and source water and tap water, suggesting that these effluents can serve as sources of N-nitrosamines to local drinking water systems. This study suggests that N-nitrosamines are prevalent in typical IWWTPs, which may infect drinking water systems. The findings of this study provide a basis data for the scientific evaluation of environmental processes of N-nitrosamines.

PFAS promotes disinfection byproduct formation through triggering particle-bound organic matter release in drinking water pipes

Loose deposit particles in drinking water distribution system commonly exist as mixtures of metal oxides, organic materials, bacteria, and extracellular secretions. In addition to their turbidity-causing effects, the hazards of such particles in drinking water are rarely recognized. In this study, we found that trace per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) could dramatically promote the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) by triggering the release of particle-bound organic matter. Carboxylic PFASs have a greater ability to increase chloroacetic acid than sulfonic PFASs, and PFASs with longer chains have a greater ability to increase trichloromethane release than shorter-chain PFASs. Characterization by organic carbon and organic nitrogen detectors and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry revealed that the released organic matter was mainly composed of proteins, carbohydrates, lignin, and condensed aromatic structures, which are the main precursors for the formation of DBPs, particularly highly toxic aromatic DBPs. After the release of organic matter, the particles exhibit a decrease in surface functional groups, an increase in surface roughness, and a decrease in particle size. The findings provide new insights into the risks of loose deposits and PFASs in drinking water, not only on PFASs per se but also on its effect of increasing toxic DBPs.

Bacterial communities of planktonic bacteria and mature biofilm in service lines and premise plumbing of a Megacity: Composition, Diversity, and influencing factors

Although simulated studies have provided valuable knowledge regarding the communities of planktonic bacteria and biofilms, the lack of systematic field studies have hampered the understanding of microbiology in real-world service lines and premise plumbing. In this study, the bacterial communities of water and biofilm were explored, with a special focus on the lifetime development of biofilm communities and their key influencing factors. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that both the planktonic bacteria and biofilm were dominated by Proteobacteria. Among the 15,084 observed amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), the 33 core ASVs covered 72.8 %, while the 12 shared core ASVs accounted for 62.2 % of the total sequences. Remarkably, it was found that the species richness and diversity of biofilm communities correlated with pipe age. The relative abundance of ASV2 (f_Sphingomonadaceae) was lower for pipe ages 40-50 years (7.9 %) than for pipe ages 10-20 years (59.3 %), while the relative abundance of ASV10 (f_Hyphomonadaceae) was higher for pipe ages 40-50 years (19.5 %) than its presence at pipe ages 20-30 years (1.9 %). The community of the premise plumbing biofilm had significantly higher species richness and diversity than that of the service line, while the steel-plastics composite pipe interior lined with polyethylene (S-PE) harbored significantly more diverse biofilm than the galvanized steel pipes (S-Zn). Interestingly, S-PE was enriched with ASV27 (g_Mycobacterium), while S-Zn pipes were enriched with ASV13 (g_Pseudomonas). Moreover, the network analysis showed that five rare ASVs, not core ASVs, were keystone members in biofilm communities, indicating the importance of rare members in the function and stability of biofilm communities. This manuscript provides novel insights into real-world service lines and premise plumbing microbiology, regarding lifetime dynamics (pipe age 10-50 years), and the influences of pipe types (premise plumbing vs. service line) and pipe materials (S-Zn vs. S-PE).

Establishment and inactivation of mono-species biofilm in a semipilot-scale water distribution system using nanocomposite of silver nanoparticles/montmorillonite loaded cationic chitosan

This study presents a novel approach in the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites comprising cationic chitosan (CCS) blended with varying concentrations of silver nanoparticles/montmorillonite (AgNPs/MMT). AgNPs/MMT was synthesized using soluble starch as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Subsequently, nanocomposites, namely CCS/AgMMT-0, CCS/AgMMT-0.5, CCS/AgMMT-1.5, and CCS/AgMMT-2.5, were developed by blending 2.5 g of CCS with 0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 g of AgNPs/MMT, respectively, and the corresponding nanocomposites were prepared using ball milling technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed the formation of nanocomposites that exhibiting nearly spherical morphologies. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements displayed average particle sizes of 1183 nm, 131 nm, 140 nm, and 188 nm for CCS/AgMMT-0, CCS/AgMMT-0.5, CCS/AgMMT-1.5, and CCS/AgMMT-2.5, respectively. The narrow polydispersity index (~0.5) indicated uniform particle size distributions across the nanocomposites, affirming monodispersity. Moreover, the zeta potential values exceeding 30 mV across all nanocomposites that confirmed their stability against agglomeration. Notably, CCS/AgMMT-2.5 nanocomposite exhibited potent antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against diverse pipeline materials. Findings showed that after 15 days of incubation, the highest populations of biofilm cells, Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm, developed over UPVC, MDPE, DCI, and SS, with corresponding HPCs of 4.79, 6.38, 8.81, and 7.24 CFU/cm2. The highest cell densities of Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in the identical situation were 4.19, 5.89, 8.12, and 6.9 CFU/cm2. The nanocomposite CCS/AgMMT-2.5 exhibited the largest measured zone of inhibition (ZOI) against both P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis, with measured ZOI values of 19 ± 0.65 and 17 ± 0.21 mm, respectively. Remarkably, the research indicates that the youngest biofilm exhibited the most notable rate of inactivation when exposed to a dose of 150 mg/L, in comparison to the mature biofilm. These such informative findings could offer valuable insights into the development of effective antibiofilm agents and materials applicable in diverse sectors such as water treatment facilities, medical devices, and industrial pipelines.

Understanding the initial use stage of cement mortar lining in drinking water distribution systems: Silicon and aluminum as stability indicators

The cement mortar lining (CML) of commonly used ductile iron pipes can severely deteriorate the drinking water quality at the initial stage of use, but the behavioral characteristics of different elements release from the CML in this stage is still unclear. In this study, dynamic immersion experiments with new cement mortar lined ductile iron pipe reactors were conducted under different feed water hardness and alkalinity conditions. The results showed that the release of alkaline substances from the CML at the initial stage of use could strongly influence the pH of water, which consequently greatly impacted the release/precipitation behaviors of calcium, aluminum and silicon. The pH and aluminum concentration of the effluent water could reach 11.5 and 700 µg/L within 24 hr of hydraulic retention time, respectively, under conditions of relatively lower hardness and alkalinity. Due to the pH elevation, calcium carbonate precipitation could occur even at much lower feed water alkalinity. Whereas the aluminum and silicon could keep release from the CML in soluble form at different hardness and alkalinity levels, and their release rate depended on the amount of calcium carbonate precipitation. Thus, aluminum and silicon were more suitable as indicators of the corrosion intensity at the initial stage of CML use rather than the traditional calcium carbonate precipitation potential. Appropriate feed water hardness and alkalinity levels for mitigating the initial intense corrosion of CML were proposed: hardness > 40 mg/L (CaCO3), alkalinity > 100 mg/L (CaCO3).

Recent advances in the unlined cast iron pipe scale characteristics, cleaning techniques and harmless disposal methods: An overview

Drinking water discoloration and its potential health risks (e.g., heavy metals, pathogens, carcinogenic organics) have aroused wide public concerns around the world, and the characteristics and corresponding cleaning techniques of pipe scales are one of the most important research fields closely related to people's lives and health. This Overview Article summarizes the latest research achievements about the new insights into the unlined cast iron pipe corrosion scale characteristics as well as the advanced cleaning techniques applied in drinking water distribution systems. The typical pollutants such as heavy metal ions, pathogens and disinfection by-products (DBPs) in pipe scales and the main cleaning techniques including unidirectional flushing (UDF), air scouring, ice pigging and guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) are categorized and elaborated. In the final part, the current challenges and future opportunities are also further discussed from the viewpoint of evolution process of pipe scales as well as the widespread application of advanced cleaning techniques. Moreover, the possible technical route for the innocent treatment and resource utilization of pipe scale waste is also proposed. It is anticipated that this review will attract more attention toward the in-depth study of pipe scales and their cleaning techniques to enjoy cleaner and healthier drinking water for people.

Behaviors and mechanisms of microbially-induced corrosion in metal-based water supply pipelines: A review

Microbially-induced corrosion (MIC) is unstoppable and extensively spread throughout drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) as the cause of pipe leakage and deteriorating water quality. For maintaining drinking water safety and reducing capital inputs in pipe usage, the possible consequences from MIC in DWDSs is still a research hotspot. Although most studies have investigated the effects of changing environmental factors on MIC corrosion, the occurrence of MIC in DWDSs has not been discussed sufficiently. This review aims to fill this gap by proposing that the formation of deposits with microbial capture may be a source of MIC in newly constructed DWDSs. The microbes early attaching to the rough pipe surface, followed by chemically and microbially-induced mineral deposits which confers resistance to disinfectants is ascribed as the first step of MIC occurrence. MIC is then activated in the newly-built, viable, and accessible microenvironment while producing extracellular polymers. With longer pipe service, oligotrophic microbes slowly grow, and metal pipe materials gradually dissolve synchronously with electron release to microbes, resulting in pipe-wall damage. Different corrosive microorganisms using pipe material as a reaction substrate would directly or indirectly cause different types of corrosion. Correspondingly, the formation of scale layers may reflect the distribution of microbial species and possibly biogenic products. It is therefore assumed that the porous and loose layer is an ideal microbial-survival environment, capable of providing diverse and sufficient ecological niches. The usage and chelation of metabolic activities and metabolites, such as acetic, oxalic, citric and glutaric acids, may lead to the formation of a porous scale layer. Therefore, the microbial interactions within the pipe scale reinforce the stability of microbial communities and accelerate MIC. Finally, a schematic model of the MIC process is presented to interpret MIC from its onset to completion.

Longitudinal and vertical distribution of microplastics in various pipe scales in an operating drinking water distribution system

Microplastics (MPs) are ingested by humans through the daily consumption of drinking water. Pipe scales are recognized as important sites of MPs occurrence in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). Despite extensive research on drinking water, no study has been conducted to investigate the distribution of MPs in pipe scales within an operational DWDS. The underground placement of DWDSs brings challenges for sampling pipe scales. In this study, 5 tap water and 16 pipe scales samples were collected from a typical DWDS. The analysis of MPs abundance in these 21 samples filled the data gap in the distribution of MPs in both pipe scales and tap water along the DWDSs. MPs were detected in all water samples (1.74-20.88 MPs/L) and pipe scales samples (0.03-3.48 MPs/cm2). In tap water, MPs abundance increased abruptly in the stagnant-slow flow region and reached the maximum value (20.88 MPs/L), even surpassing the abundance in raw water (6.42 MPs/L). In the pipe scales, MPs abundance decreased from the upstream to downstream of DWDS and was associated with the heavy metal concentration. MPs smaller than 150 µm accounted for 91.6% of the tap water (21-971 µm) and pipe scales (20-2055 µm). The abundance of MPs showed a logarithmic increase as the size decreased. The proportion of MPs fibers in tap water was lower than that in pipe scales. A total of 35 MPs polymers were detected, with 34 polymers in pipe scales and 26 polymers in tap water. In terms of abundance, polyethylene terephthalate (50.0%) was the dominant polymer in pipe scales, while polyamide (70.3%) was the dominant polymer in tap water. Regarding detection rate, polyamide was detected in all 21 samples, followed by polyurethane in 19 samples. The distribution of MPs along the longitudinal direction of the DWDS was correlated with heavy metal. While the distribution of MPs in the vertical direction of large diameter pipe scales was dependent on their sizes, and densities. The greatest abundance, size and density of MPs were detected at the bottom 120-degree.

Water quality monitoring in southern Brazil and the assessment of risk factors related to contamination by coliforms and Escherichia coli

The potability of water, including underground sources, is constantly affected by human activities. To assess water quality and water security in rural and urban areas of southern Brazil, a quantitative, retrospective analysis of water samples collected monthly by the Brazilian health authorities (19,687 samples from 2013 to 2021) was performed. In rural areas, 5,979 water samples (77.54%) were found to be contaminated by coliform bacteria and 3,431 (44.50%) by Escherichia coli. In addition, 1,616 (20.95%) of the contaminated samples were significantly correlated with rainfall amount. In urban areas, 1,268 (10.95%) of the samples contained coliform bacteria and 293 (2.53%) of these samples contained E. coli, with the factor of rainfall associated with 1,081 samples (9.33%) with bacterial contamination. In terms of physicochemical parameters, turbidity exceeded the national standard (5 uT) in 448 (2.32%) samples and fluoride fell below the required level (0.8 mg/L) in 106 samples (0.54%). The presence of free residual chlorine (0.2-2.0 mg/L) was verified in 846 samples (14.38%) in rural areas and in 10,825 samples (56.13%) in urban areas. These results suggest a strong association between rainfall factors and physicochemical alterations, as well as the risk of greater microbial contamination of water for human consumption.

The Behavior of Polymeric Pipes in Drinking Water Distribution System-Comparison with Other Pipe Materials

The inner walls of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are expected to be clean to ensure a safe quality of drinking water. Complex physical, chemical, and biological processes take place when water comes into contact with the pipe surface. This paper describes the impact of leaching different compounds from the water supply pipes into drinking water and subsequent risks. Among these compounds, there are heavy metals. It is necessary to prevent these metals from getting into the DWDS. Those compounds are susceptible to impacting the quality of the water delivered to the population either by leaching dangerous chemicals into water or by enhancing the development of microorganism growth on the pipe surface. The corrosion process of different pipe materials, scale formation mechanisms, and the impact of bacteria formed in corrosion layers are discussed. Water treatment processes and the pipe materials also affect the water composition. Pipe materials act differently in the flowing and stagnation conditions. Moreover, they age differently (e.g., metal-based pipes are subjected to corrosion while polymer-based pipes have a decreased mechanical resistance) and are susceptible to enhanced bacterial film formation. Water distribution pipes are a dynamic environment, therefore, the models that are used must consider the changes that occur over time. Mathematical modeling of the leaching process is complex and includes the description of corrosion development over time, correlated with a model for the biofilm formation and the disinfectants-corrosion products and disinfectants-biofilm interactions. The models used for these processes range from simple longitudinal dispersion models to Monte Carlo simulations and 3D modeling. This review helps to clarify what are the possible sources of compounds responsible for drinking water quality degradation. Additionally, it gives guidance on the measures that are needed to maintain stable and safe drinking water quality.

Bayesian Optimization of Booster Disinfection Scheduling in Water Distribution Networks

Chlorine remains the most widely used disinfectant in drinking water treatment and distribution systems worldwide. To maintain a minimum residual throughout the distribution network, chlorine dosage needs to be regulated by optimizing the locations of chlorine boosters and their scheduling (i.e., chlorine injection rates). Such optimization can be computationally expensive since it requires numerous evaluations of water quality (WQ) simulation models. In recent years, Bayesian optimization (BO) has garnered considerable attention due to its efficiency in optimizing black-box functions in a wide range of applications. This study presents the first attempt to implement BO for the optimization of WQ in water distribution networks. The developed python-based framework couples BO with EPANET-MSX to optimize the scheduling of chlorine sources, while ensuring the delivery of water that satisfies water quality standards. Using Gaussian process regression to build the BO surrogate model, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of different BO methods. To that end, systematic testing of different acquisition functions, including the probability of improvement, expected improvement, upper confidence bound, and entropy search, in conjunction with different covariance kernels, including Matérn, squared-exponential, gamma-exponential, and rational quadratic, was conducted. Additionally, a thorough sensitivity analysis was performed to understand the influence of different BO parameters, including the number of initial points, covariance kernel length scale, and the level of exploration vs exploitation. The results revealed substantial variability in the performance of different BO methods and showed that the choice of the acquisition function has a more profound influence on the performance of BO than the covariance kernel.

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate: improving broiler health by reducing harmful microbial levels in the waterline

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) is commonly used for treating drinking water, industrial water, and wastewater. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of NaDCC-treated waterline drinking water on the growth of AA+ broilers by reducing microbial levels in the waterline. A total of 480 healthy 1-day-old AA+ broilers (46.77 ± 0.50 g) were selected for the experiment and randomly divided into four groups with six replicates of 20 birds each. The control group received regular drinking water, while the test groups received drinking water with NaDCC concentrations of 10, 30, and 50 mg/L. The test groups consumed the treated water on specific days throughout the 42-day experimental period. Results showed that NaDCC treatment significantly reduced the levels of E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus and Moulds in the drinking water at the waterline (p < 0.05). Drinking water with NaDCC also led to reduced broiler fecal emissions of NH3 and H2S, as well as reduced counts of E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus and Moulds (p < 0.05), particularly at 30 mg/L and 50 mg/L concentrations. Broilers consuming NaDCC at 50 mg/L exhibited a significant increase in ADG from days 1-42 (p < 0.05). The levels of E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus and Moulds in the drinking water at the waterline were significantly and positively correlated with the bacterial count in the feces (p < 0.05, R > 0.6). Additionally, bacterial levels in drinking water and broiler feces were negatively correlated with broiler production performance indicators, including ADG, ADFI, F/G and AWC. In conclusion, NaDCC can indirectly enhance broiler performance by reducing the levels of harmful bacteria in the waterline without affecting normal drinking water. The addition of 30 mg/L or 50 mg/L of NaDCC to the waterline in poultry production can effectively control harmful microorganisms and improve poultry health. Based on the experiment's results, it is recommended to preferentially use 30 mg/L NaDCC in the waterline to reduce farming costs.

Untangling microbiota diversity and assembly patterns in the world's longest underground culvert water diversion canal

The long-distance underground box culvert water transport system (LUBWT) is a crucial link between the source of drinking water and the consumers. It must ensure the stability of water quality during transportation. However, uncontrollable microbial growth can develop in the water delivery system during the long delivery process, posing a risk to health and safety. Therefore, we applied 16 s and 18 s gene sequence analysis in order to study microbial communities in box culvert waters sampled in 2021, as well as a molecular ecological network-based approach to decipher microbial interactions and stability. Our findings revealed that, in contrast to natural freshwater ecosystems, micro-eukaryotes in LUBWT have complex interactions such as predation, parasitism, and symbiosis due to their semi-enclosed box culvert environment. Total nitrogen may be the primary factor affecting bacterial community interactions in addition to temperature. Moreover, employing stability indicators such as robustness and vulnerability, we also found that microbial stability varied significantly from season to season, with summer having the higher stability of microbial communities. Not only that but also the stability of the micronuclei also varied greatly during water transport, which might also be related to the complex interactions among the micro-eukaryotes. To summarize, our study reveals the microbial interactions and stability in LUBWT, providing essential ecological knowledge to ensure the safety of LUBWT's water quality.

Preparation and Functionalization of Polymers with Antibacterial Properties-Review of the Recent Developments

The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in our environment is a matter of growing concern. Consumption of contaminated drinking water or contaminated fruit or vegetables can provoke ailments and even diseases, mainly in the digestive system. In this work, we present the latest data on the ability to remove bacteria from potable water and wastewater. The article discusses the mechanisms of the antibacterial activity of polymers, consisting of the electrostatic interaction between bacterial cells and the surface of natural and synthetic polymers functionalized with metal cations (polydopamine modified with silver nanoparticles, starch modified with quaternary ammonium or halogenated benzene). The synergistic effect of polymers (N-alkylaminated chitosan, silver doped polyoxometalate, modified poly(aspartic acid)) with antibiotics has also been described, allowing for precise targeting of drugs to infected cells as a preventive measure against the excessive spread of antibiotics, leading to drug resistance among bacteria. Cationic polymers, polymers obtained from essential oils (EOs), or natural polymers modified with organic acids are promising materials in the removal of harmful bacteria. Antimicrobial polymers are successfully used as biocides due to their acceptable toxicity, low production costs, chemical stability, and high adsorption capacity thanks to multi-point attachment to microorganisms. New achievements in the field of polymer surface modification in order to impart antimicrobial properties were summarized.

Building water quality deterioration during water supply restoration after interruption: Influences of premise plumbing configuration

Premise plumbing plays an essential role in determining the final quality of drinking water consumed by customers. However, little is known about the influences of plumbing configuration on water quality changes. This study selected parallel premise plumbing in the same building with different configurations, i.e., laboratory and toilet plumbing. Water quality deteriorations induced by premise plumbing under regular and interrupted water supply were investigated. The results showed that most of the water quality parameters did not vary under regular supply, except Zn, which was significantly increased by laboratory plumbing (78.2 to 260.7 µg/l). For the bacterial community, the Chao1 index was significantly increased by both plumbing types to a similar level (52 to 104). Laboratory plumbing significantly changed the bacterial community, but toilet plumbing did not. Remarkably, water supply interruption/restoration led to serious water quality deterioration in both plumbing types but resulted in different changes. Physiochemically, discoloration was observed only in laboratory plumbing, along with sharp increases in Mn and Zn. Microbiologically, the increase in ATP was sharper in toilet plumbing than in laboratory plumbing. Some opportunistic pathogen-containing genera, e.g., Legionella spp. and Pseudomonas spp., were present in both plumbing types but only in disturbed samples. This study highlighted the esthetic, chemical, and microbiological risks associated with premise plumbing, for which system configuration plays an important role. Attention should be given to optimizing premise plumbing design for managing building water quality.

Can online particle counters and electrochemical sensors distinguish normal periodic and aperiodic drinking water quality fluctuations from contamination?

Early warning systems monitoring the quality of drinking water need to distinguish between normal quality fluctuations and those caused by contaminants. Thus, to decrease the number of false positive events, normal water quality fluctuations, whether periodic or aperiodic, need to be characterized. For this, we used a novel flow-imaging particle counter, a light-scattering particle counter, and electrochemical sensors to monitor the drinking water quality of a pressure zone in a building complex for 109 days. Data were analyzed to determine the feasibility of the sensors and particle counters to distinguish periodic and aperiodic fluctuations from real-life contaminants. The concentrations of particles smaller than 10 μm and N, Small, Large, and B particles showed sudden changes recurring daily, likely due to the flow rate changes in the building complex. Conversely, the concentrations of larger than 10 μm particles and C particles, in addition to the responses of electrochemical sensors, remained in their low typical values despite flow rate changes. The aperiodic events, likely resulting from an abnormally high flow rate in the water mains due to maintenance, were detected using particle counters and electrochemical sensors. This study provides insights into choosing water quality sensors by showing that machine learning-based particle classes, such as B, C, F, and particles larger than 10 μm are promising in distinguishing contamination from aperiodic and periodic fluctuations while the use of other particle classes and electrochemical sensors may require dynamic baseline to decrease false positive events in an early warning system.

Mechanisms of survival mediated by the stringent response in Pseudomonas aeruginosa under environmental stress in drinking water systems: Nitrogen deficiency and bacterial competition

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes public health problems in drinking water systems. This study investigated the potential role of the stringent response in regulating the adaptive physiological metabolic behaviors of P. aeruginosa to low nitrogen stress and bacterial competition in drinking water systems. The results indicated that guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) concentrations in P. aeruginosa increased to 135.5 pmol/g SS under short-term nitrogen deficiency. Meanwhile, the expression levels of the ppGpp synthesis genes (ppx, relA) and degradation gene (spoT) were upregulated by 37.0% and downregulated by 26.8%, respectively, indicating that the stringent response was triggered. The triggered stringent response inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa and enhanced the metabolic activity of P. aeruginosa to adapt to nutrient deprivation. The interspecific competition significantly affected the regulation of the stringent response in P. aeruginosa. During short-term nitrogen deficiency, the extracellular polymeric substances concentration of P. aeruginosa decreased significantly, leading to desorption and diffusion of attached bacteria and increased ecological risks. The regulatory effect of stringent response on P. aeruginosa gradually weakened under long-term nitrogen deficiency. However, the expression of pathogenic genes (nalD/PA3310) and flagellar assembly genes (fliC) in P. aeruginosa was upregulated by the stringent response, which increased the risk of disease.

Generative adversarial networks for detecting contamination events in water distribution systems using multi-parameter, multi-site water quality monitoring

Contamination events in water distribution networks (WDNs) can have a huge impact on water supply and public health; increasingly, online water quality sensors are deployed for real-time detection of contamination events. Machine learning has been used to integrate multivariate time series water quality data at multiple stations for contamination detection; however, accurate extraction of spatial features in water quality signals remains challenging. This study proposed a contamination detection method based on generative adversarial networks (GANs). The GAN model was constructed to simultaneously consider the spatial correlation between sensor locations and temporal information of water quality indicators. The model consists of two networks-a generator and a discriminator-the outputs of which are used to measure the degree of abnormality of water quality data at each time step, referred to as the anomaly score. Bayesian sequential analysis is used to update the likelihood of event occurrence based on the anomaly scores. Alarms are then generated from the fusion of single-site and multi-site models. The proposed method was tested on a WDN for various contamination events with different characteristics. Results showed high detection performance by the proposed GAN method compared with the minimum volume ellipsoid benchmark method for various contamination amplitudes. Additionally, the GAN method achieved high accuracy for various contamination events with different amplitudes and numbers of anomalous water quality parameters, and water quality data from different sensor stations, highlighting its robustness and potential for practical application to real-time contamination events.

Spatiotemporal variations of river water turbidity in responding to rainstorm-streamflow processes and farming activities in a mountainous catchment, Lai Chi Wo, Hong Kong, China

River turbidity is an important factor in evaluating environmental water quality, and turbidity dynamics can reflect water sediment changes. During rainfall periods, specifically in mountainous areas, river turbidity varies dramatically, and knowledge of spatiotemporal turbidity variations in association with rainfall features and farming activities is valuable for soil erosion prevention and catchment management. However, due to the difficulties in collecting reliable field turbidity data during rainstorms at a fine temporal scale, our understanding of the features of turbidity variations in mountainous rivers is still vague. This study conducted field measurements of hydrological and environmental variables in a mountainous river, the Lai Chi Wo river, in Hong Kong, China. The study results revealed that variations of turbidity graphs during rainstorms closely match variations of streamflow hydrographs, and the occurrence of the turbidity peaks and water level peaks are almost at the same time. Moreover, the study disclosed that the increasing rates of the turbidity values are closely related to the rainfall intensity at temporal scales of 15 and 20 min, and the impact of farming activities on river turbidity changes is largely dependent on rainfall intensity. In the study area, when the rainfall intensity is larger than 35 mm/hr at a time interval of 15 min, the surface runoff over the farmland would result in higher river water turbidity downstream than that upstream. The study results would enrich our understanding of river water turbidity dynamics at minute scales and be valuable for further exploration of the river water environment in association with turbidity.

Wastewater generation and treatment by various eco-friendly technologies: Possible health hazards and further reuse for environmental safety

The discharge of untreated wastewater as a result of various developmental activities such as urbanization, industrialization and changes in lifestyle poses great threats to aquatic ecosystems as well as humans. Currently, ∼380 billion m³ (380 trillion liters) of wastewater is generated globally every year. Around 70% of freshwater withdrawals are used for agricultural production throughout the world. The wastewater generated through agricultural run-off further pollutes freshwater resources. However, only 24% of the total wastewater generated from households and industries is treated before its disposal in rivers or reused in agriculture. The most problematic contaminants associated with ecological toxicity are heavy metals such as Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb, Hg, As and Mn. One of the most important issues linked with wastewater generation is the residual presence of pathogenic microorganisms which pose potential health hazards to consumers when they enter into the food chain. It is estimated that in India almost USD 600 million (48.60 billion INR) is spent per year to tackle waterborne diseases (WBD). In light of this, immediate action is needed to effectively treat wastewater and develop safer reuse prospects. Various wastewater treatment technologies have been established and they work well to provide an alternative water source to meet the growing demand. The main concern towards treating wastewater is to eliminate inorganic and organic substances and lower the nutrient concentration, total solids, and microbial pathogens to prevent freshwater pollution and health risks.

Interface hydrogen bonding dominated perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) accumulation by iron particles in drinking water pipes

Iron particle is one of the key factors inducing discoloration in drinking water distribution system (DWDS), but the mechanism of iron particles on the accumulation of trace organic pollutants in DWDS is not clear. Here, iron-based pipes from real DWDS were used to investigate the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) accumulation mechanisms in DWDS. Results showed that old unlined pipes had a much higher accumulation capacity for PFOA than new pipes. Among the corrosion products in old pipes, Fe₂O₃ and Fe₃O₄ did not have obvious accumulation for PFOA, while FeOOH exhibited a strong accumulation effect for PFOA. Furthermore, the in-situ formed iron particles contributed more to PFOA accumulation than pre-formed iron particles. Interestingly, PFOA caused an increase in turbidity and particle size of in-situ formed iron particles. Mulliken charge of F-bonded Fe increased from +1.28 e to +1.30 e, which indicated that the oxidation state of Fe-center was strengthened by PFOA. When dissolved oxygen existed, a PFOA-FeOOH-O₂ linkage could form through COO-Fe coordination and O₂ interface adsorption, which enhanced cytotoxicity due to the generation of •OH radicals. These findings implied that interface hydrogen bonding dominated PFOA accumulation by iron particles in DWDS, which would increase the risks of discoloration.

Diversity and dynamics of bacterial communities in the drinking water distribution network of a mid-sized city in Brazil

This study assessed the bacterial community composition of a drinking water system (DWS) serving a mid-sized city (120,000 inhabitants) in Brazil. Water samples, including raw and treated water, were collected at seven points throughout the DWS. DNA was extracted and analysed using high-throughput sequencing (Ion Torrent). Free chlorine and turbidity were measured in situ. Results showed that the highest relative abundance of 16S rRNA genes was from phyla Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria. The next most abundant phylum was Cyanobacteria, represented by Arthronema, Calothrix, and Synechococcus. An interesting observation was that the DNA-based analysis suggested a bacterial community change in the distribution network, with treated reservoir water being very different from the network samples. This suggests active microbiology within the distribution network and a tendency for bacterial diversity to decrease after chlorine disinfection but increase after pipeline distribution. In raw water, a predominance of Proteobacteria was observed with reduced Cyanobacteria, showing a negative correlation. In treated water, Proteobacteria were negatively correlated with Bacteroidetes. Finally, 16S rRNA genes from Firmicutes (especially Staphylococcus) had a high abundance in the chlorinated water, which may indicate the phylum's resistance to chlorine residuals. Opportunistic pathogens, e.g., Mycobacteria, Legionella, and Staphylococcus, were also observed.

Stagnation trigger changes to tap water quality in winter season: Novel insights into bacterial community activity and composition

The drinking water distribution system is important for water supply and it affects the quality of the drinking water. Indoor pipeline water quality is regulated by physical, hydraulic and biological elements, such as indoor temperature and stagnation. In this work, the effects of indoor heating and overnight stagnation on the variation in bacterial community structure and the total cell count were assessed by full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing and flow cytometry, respectively. The results exhibited that the average intact cell count was 6.99 × 10⁴ cells/mL and the low nucleic acid (LNA) bacteria was 4.48 × 10⁴ cells/mL after stagnation. The average concentration of total and intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was 3.64 × 10^-12 gATP/mL and 3.13 × 10^-17 gATP/cell in stagnant water, respectively. The growth of LNA cells played a crucial role in increasing ATP. The dominant phylum observed was Proteobacteria (87.21 %), followed by Actinobacteria (8.25 %). Opportunistic pathogens increased the risk of disease in stagnant water (up to 1.2-fold for Pseudomonas sp. and 5.8-fold for Mycobacterium sp.). Meanwhile, structural equation model (SEM) and redundancy analysis (RDA) also illustrated that water temperature, residual chlorine and Fe significantly affected the abundance and composition of bacterial community. Taking together, these results show response of tap water quality to overnight stagnation and indoor heating, and provide scientific basis for drinking water security management in winter season.

Impact of initial chlorine concentration on water quality change in old unlined iron pipes

Unlined iron pipe (UIP) is still widely in use in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS), discoloration easily happens after a long-time retention due to iron release, but the influence of initial chlorine on water quality under this condition is not clear. Here, we studied the water quality changes in UIP section reactors under different initial chlorine dosages. Results showed that chlorine could disappeared rapidly within 0.5 h in the UIP. The water with higher initial chlorine (5 mg/L) had higher turbidity in a short time (within 1.5 h), but for a longer retention time (2∼12 h), the highest turbidity was in the iron pipe without initial chlorine. Interestingly, a clear increase in adenosine triphosphate in the UIPs was observed with the increase of initial chlorine, which was in accordance with the results of heterotrophic plate count. Polysaccharide and protein increased with the increase of initial chlorine, which would benefit the formation of a protective layer to inhibit corrosion. This study reflects that during the overnight retention in UIP, raising chlorine would be effective to control discoloration, but chemical and microbiological risks may increase.

Emerging contaminants migration from pipes used in drinking water distribution systems: a review of the scientific literature

Migration of emerging contaminants (ECs) from pipes into water is a global concern due to potential human health effects. Nevertheless, a review of migration ECs from pipes into water distribution systems is presently lacking. This paper reviews, the reported occurrence migration of ECs from pipes into water distribution systems in the world. Furthermore, the results related to ECs migration from pipes into water distribution systems, their probable sources, and their hazards are discussed. The present manuscript considered the existing reports on migration of five main categories of ECs including microplastics (MPs), bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, nonylphenol (NP), perfluoroalkyl, and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from distribution network into tap water. A focus on tap water in published literature suggests that pipes type used had an important role on levels of ECs migration in water during transport and storage of water. For comparison, tap drinking water in contact with polymer pipes had the highest mean concentrations of reviewed contaminants. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most frequently detected types of microplastics (MPs) in tap water. Based on the risk assessment analysis of ECs, levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were above 1, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk to consumers. Finally, there are still scientific gaps on occurrence and migration of ECs from pipes used in distribution systems, and this needs more in-depth studies to evaluate their exposure hazards on human health.

Fluoride enrichment mechanisms and related health risks of groundwater in the transition zone of geomorphic units, northern China

Although groundwater is the primary drinking water source in northern of China, little is known about generation mechanisms and related health risks of high fluoride groundwater at the geomorphic transition zones. Thus, 419 groundwater samples were collected from Zhangjiakou region, where is a typically geomorphic transition zone of the North China Plain and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, to conduct the hydrochemical analysis, geochemical modeling, multivariate statistical analysis, and health risks assessment. From the results, F^- concentration in groundwater had a range of 0.05-9.71 mg L^-1. About 37.1% and 26.2% of groundwater samples from Bashang region (BSR) and Baxia region (BXR), respectively, were over the 1.50 mg L^-1, which were mainly distributed in the groundwater flow retardation area and/or evaporation discharge area. Thermodynamic simulations demonstrated that F-bearing minerals dissolution and Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ removal via calcite/dolomite precipitation primarily governed high-F^- groundwater formation in the whole study area. Competitive adsorption, evaporation, evaporites dissolution and salt-effect also affected F^- enrichment in BSR. Desorption in alkaline environment, ion exchange and human activities played a vital role in F^- enrichment at BXR. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that the origin of F^- contamination was geogenic in BSR; whereas, it was geogenic and anthropogenic in BXR. Besides, more than 71.8%, 51.0%, 36.1% and 25.5% of the study area exceeded the acceptable level (health index>1) for infants, children, adult males, and females, respectively. The health risks for different groups of people varied significantly and ranked: infants > children > males > females, suggesting that younger people were more susceptible to fluoride contamination. Meanwhile, females were more resistant to fluoride contamination than males. These findings are vital to providing insights on high-F^- groundwater formation, investigate the situation of health risks, and conduct the integrated management for high fluoride groundwater in geomorphic transition zones at northern China.

Drinking natural water unchangeably is associated with reduced all-cause mortality in elderly people: A longitudinal prospective study from China

Objective

Because of rapid economic growth and followed urban expansion in China, many people drinking natural water had to change their water sources to tap water. We aimed to test the unknown association that whether continued use of natural water for drinking is different from switching to tap water in all-cause mortality risks in elderly people.

Methods

In total, based on Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 26,688 elderly participants drinking natural water from childhood to young-old were included in the final analyses. Associations between whether changing drinking water sources or not and all-cause mortality risk were then estimated by Cox regression models with the use of multiple propensity score methods, and the primary analysis used propensity score matching, with other propensity score methods confirming the robustness of the results.

Results

Baseline characteristics were fairly well balanced by the three post-randomization methods. During a median follow-up period of 3.00 (IQR: 1.52, 5.73) years, 21,379 deaths were recorded. The primary analysis showed people using natural water unchangeably was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those switching to tap water in later life (HR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.91-0.97, p < 0.001). Other propensity score methods, as well as Cox regression analysis without using propensity score methods, showed similar results.

Conclusions

Among elderly people depending on natural water for drinking from their childhood to young-old in China, continued use of natural water was associated with a lower all-cause mortality risk than conversion to tap water later. Further studies in different countries and populations are needed to verify our conclusions.

Formation mechanisms and supervisory prediction of scaling in water supply pipelines: A review

The scaling problem in the water supply pipeline will increase the resistance coefficient of the pipeline and the pressure of the water supply pipeline, which will not only affect the operation safety of the water supply pipeline, but also cause energy waste. The scale in the pipeline will also enrich heavy metal ions and pathogenic microorganisms, affecting the safety of water supply water quality and causing secondary pollution of water quality. At present, a lot of research has been done on the composition structure and crystallization process of the scale. The study found that calcite is the main component of the scale; the scale process is a heterogeneous nucleation process induced by heavy metal particles and their corrosion products in the pipeline. The introduction of electrochemical detection technology, density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation has greatly improved the accuracy and timeliness of water scaling conditions detection and realized the visualization of scaling mechanism. In this paper, the measurement methods of the scale in the water supply pipeline and the corresponding material composition and crystal structure characteristics are reviewed, and the mechanism of the scale and the water quality conditions are summarized. At the end of this paper, based on summarizing the existing water quality scaling tendency evaluation methods, it is proposed to establish a water quality potential scaling risk assessment framework based on Puckorius scaling index (PSI) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the future.

Pilot investigation on biostability of drinking water distribution systems under water source switching

Water quality deterioration of drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) caused by water source switching has been reported previously. However, systematic investigation of the biostability of DWDS under water source switching is limited. Aged pipes, including three commonly used pipe materials dug out from a practical DWDS, were used to systematically investigate the biofilm stability mechanism of DWDS under water source switching to quality-improved water. An increase in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration in the bulk water during the initial stage of the switching period was observed, indicating the risk of biofilm release through aged pipe surfaces after water source switching. Sloughing of biofilms might contribute to temporary instability. From day 35, the ATP concentration in the polyethylene (PE) and plastic stainless steel composite (PS) pipes were maintained at approximately 2.40 and 2.56 ng/L, respectively. In contrast, the ATP concentration in the ductile iron (DI) pipes was higher, at approximately 3.43 ng/L from day 42. The water quality variation could cause areas of the biofilm to slough and reduce the biomass of biofilm, causing partial alteration of the microbial community. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing-based functional prediction revealed that the biofilm could increase the abundance of chlorine-resistant bacteria attributed to the increase in Pseudomonas and Methylobacterium after switching to quality-improved water. Moreover, the profiles of specific pathways linked to human diseases, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic biosynthesis revealed that the safety of the biofilm could improve after switching to quality-improved water. KEY POINTS: • The PE and PS biofilm showed improved resistance to water quality perturbation. • Greater number of Methylobacterium was found in the biofilm after water source switching. • 3.16S gene-based metagenomics prediction revealed that the safety of the biofilm under water source switching.

Impact of different source-water switching patterns on the stability of drinking water in an estuarine urban water distribution system

Source-water switching can lead to instability in drinking water distribution systems. In estuarine cities using surface water as source water where salt tide occasionally happens, the influence can be particularly complex due to changes of Larson Index (LI). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different switching patterns on the stability of water in an estuarine city. Fluctuated LI was found in the current distribution system. LI of the new source water was lower and more stable. Susceptible areas with a high frequency of over standard water quality were identified and pipe scales there were mainly composed of relatively stable iron oxides with dense crystal structures (Fe₃O₄ and α-FeOOH). Two old pipe sections were used to simulate different switching patterns. The microbial risk did not increase significantly when the original and new water sources were combined in different ratios (2∶8, 5∶5), when multiple water sources were used (3∶3∶4) or when salinity increased. The better water quality, lower LI of the new source water, and stability of the current distribution system together contributed to the biostability. Total iron increased after switching, then declined and stabilized for most switching patterns. Salt tide can lead to sharp iron release. The results provided insightful information for distribution systems that have cast iron pipes and that might encounter source-water switching patterns.

Review on corrosion and corrosion scale formation upon unlined cast iron pipes in drinking water distribution systems

The qualified finished water from water treatment plants (WTPs) may become discolored and deteriorated during transportation in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), which affected tap water quality seriously. This water stability problem often occurs due to pipe corrosion and the destabilization of corrosion scales. This paper provides a comprehensive review of pipe corrosion in DWDSs, including corrosion process, corrosion scale formation, influencing factors and monitoring technologies utilized in DWDSs. In terms of corrosion process, corrosion occurrence, development mechanisms, currently applied assays, and indices used to determine the corrosion possibility are summarized, as well as the chemical and bacterial influences. In terms of scale formation, explanations for the nature of corrosion and scale formation mechanisms are discussed and its typical multilayered structure is illustrated. Furthermore, the influences of water quality and microbial activity on scale transformation are comprehensively discussed. Corrosion-related bacteria at the genus level and their associated corrosion mechanism are also summarized. This review helps deepen the current understanding of pipe corrosion and scale formation in DWDSs, providing guidance for water supply utilities to ensure effective measures to maintain water quality stability and guarantee drinking water safety.

Nanotechnologies for control of pathogenic microbial biofilms

Biofilms are formed at interfaces by microorganisms, which congregate in microstructured communities embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). Biofilm-related infections are problematic due to the high resistance towards most clinically used antimicrobials, which is associated with high mortality and morbidity, combined with increased hospital stays and overall treatment costs. Several new nanotechnology-based approaches have recently been proposed for targeting resistant bacteria and microbial biofilms. Here we discuss the impacts of biofilms on healthcare, food processing and packaging, and water filtration and distribution systems, and summarize the emerging nanotechnological strategies that are being developed for biofilm prevention, control and eradication. Combination of novel nanomaterials with conventional antimicrobial therapies has shown great potential in producing more effective platforms for controlling biofilms. Recent developments include antimicrobial nanocarriers with enzyme surface functionality that allow passive infection site targeting, degradation of the EPS and delivery of high concentrations of antimicrobials to the residing cells. Several stimuli-responsive antimicrobial formulation strategies have taken advantage of the biofilm microenvironment to enhance interaction and passive delivery into the biofilm sites. Nanoparticles of ultralow size have also been recently employed in formulations to improve the EPS penetration, enhance the carrier efficiency, and improve the cell wall permeability to antimicrobials. We also discuss antimicrobial metal and metal oxide nanoparticle formulations which provide additional mechanical factors through externally induced actuation and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the biofilms. The review helps to bridge microbiology with materials science and nanotechnology, enabling a more comprehensive interdisciplinary approach towards the development of novel antimicrobial treatments and biofilm control strategies.

The role of pipe biofilms on dissemination of viral pathogens and virulence factor genes in a full-scale drinking water supply system

Water is an important medium for virus transmission and viral pathogens are increasingly appreciated as a significant water safety issue. However, the effect of pipe biofilms on viral pathogens remains unclear. This research aimed to investigate the dissemination of viruses in a full-scale drinking water supply system (DWSS) and the effect of pipe biofilms on viral pathogens in bulking water. Viral pathogens, pathogenic viral hosts, and viral virulence factors (VFs) were found to disseminate from source water to tap water. The proportion of virus and viral VFs in the biofilm was far less than that in water. The contribution of biofilms in pipe wall to viruses and viral VFs in bulking water was less than 4%, and viruses in the biofilm had no obvious effect on pathogenic viruses in water. Dominant viruses carrying VFs changed from Cyanobacteria virus to Mycobacterium virus after advanced water treatment. Mycobacterium and organics were identified as the key factors influencing composition and abundance of viral VFs, which could explain 41.1% of the variation in viral virulence in the water supply system. Host bacteria and organics may be used as the key targets to control the risk of viruses in DWSSs.

Direct evidence of microbiological water quality changes on bacterial quantity and community caused by plumbing system

Drinking water quality deteriorates from treatment plant to customer taps, especially in the plumbing system. There is no direct evidence about what the differences are contributed by plumbing system. This study compared the water quality in the water main and at customer tap by preparing a sampling tap on the water main. The biomass was quantified by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the microbial community was profiled by 454 pyrosequencing. The results showed that in distribution pipes, biofilm contributed >94% of the total biomass, while loose deposits showed little contribution (< 2%) because of the low amount of loose deposits. The distribution of biological stable water had minor effects on the microbiocidal water quality regarding both quantity (ATP 1 ng/L vs. 1.7 ng/L) and community of the bacteria. Whereas the plumbing system has significant contribution to the increase of active biomass (1.7 ng/L vs. 2.9 ng/L) and the changes of bacterial community. The relative abundance of Sphingomonas spp. at tap (22%) was higher than that at water main (2%), while the relative abundance of Pseudomonas spp. in tap water (15%) was lower than that in the water from street water main (29%). Though only one location was prepared and studied, the present study showed that the protocol of making sampling tap on water main offered directly evidences about the impacts of plumbing system on tap water quality, which makes it possible to distinguish and study the processes in distribution system and plumbing system separately.

Assessment of supplied water quality during mass gatherings in arid environments

Mass gathering events commonly encounter environmental challenges that necessitate assurance of water quality and food security. The current outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) call for maintaining safe drinking water supply and providing assessment tools of drinking water quality to avoid contamination in water sources or distribution networks. Arid environmental conditions also add more stress on supplied water to mass gathering events. Herein, we assess the quality of the water supply (desalinated 95% and groundwater 5%) in Makkah city, Saudi Arabia during a mass gathering event in 2019 (9.6 million people) for religious purposes. Fifty five samples were randomly collected from nine different districts of Makkah city, analyzed for TDS, turbidity, pH, EC, free Cl₂, Al, Cd, Pb, Cr, F, major ions, coliform and E.coli bacteria and were finally used to estimate the water quality index (WQI). Major ions, trace elements and heavy metals analyses show values below permissible limits in most of the samples, while a few samples show slightly higher values. No bacterial count found in any sample. WQI values of all fifty-five samples were below 50 and were identified as “excellent water”. The WQI variations could be attributed to the distribution network conditions rather than a direct impact of adding groundwater with uncontrolled chemical composition. The use of WQI to report the quality of water during mass gathering events to governmental authorities has been proved to be beneficial and should be applied for further mass gathering events worldwide.

Forward-Looking Roadmaps for Long-Term Continuous Water Quality Monitoring: Bottlenecks, Innovations, and Prospects in a Critical Review

Long-term continuous monitoring (LTCM) of water quality can bring far-reaching influences on water ecosystems by providing spatiotemporal data sets of diverse parameters and enabling operation of water and wastewater treatment processes in an energy-saving and cost-effective manner. However, current water monitoring technologies are deficient for long-term accuracy in data collection and processing capability. Inadequate LTCM data impedes water quality assessment and hinders the stakeholders and decision makers from foreseeing emerging problems and executing efficient control methodologies. To tackle this challenge, this review provides a forward-looking roadmap highlighting vital innovations toward LTCM, and elaborates on the impacts of LTCM through a three-hierarchy perspective: data, parameters, and systems. First, we demonstrate the critical needs and challenges of LTCM in natural resource water, drinking water, and wastewater systems, and differentiate LTCM from existing short-term and discrete monitoring techniques. We then elucidate three steps to achieve LTCM in water systems, consisting of data acquisition (water sensors), data processing (machine learning algorithms), and data application (with modeling and process control as two examples). Finally, we explore future opportunities of LTCM in four key domains, water, energy, sensing, and data, and underscore strategies to transfer scientific discoveries to general end-users.

Climate Change: Water Temperature and Invertebrate Propagation in Drinking-Water Distribution Systems, Effects, and Risk Assessment

This paper provides a summary of the knowledge of drinking-water temperature increases and present daily, seasonal, and yearly temperature data of drinking-water distribution systems (DWDS). The increasing water temperatures lead to challenges in DWDS management, and we must assume a promotion of invertebrates as pipe inhabitants. Macro-, meio-, and microinvertebrates were found in nearly all DWDS. Data in relation to diversity and abundance clearly point out a high probability of mass development, and invertebrate monitoring must be the focus of any DWDS management. The water temperature of DWDS is increasing due to climate change effects, and as a consequence, the growth and reproduction of invertebrates is increasing. The seasonal development of a chironomid (Paratanytarus grimmii) and longtime development of water lice (Asellus aquaticus) are given. Due to increased water temperatures, a third generation of water lice per year has been observed, which is one reason for the observed mass development. This leads to an impact on drinking-water quality and an increased health risk, as invertebrates can serve as a host or vehicle for potential harmful microbes. More research is needed especially on (i) water temperature monitoring in drinking-water distribution systems, (ii) invertebrate development, and (iii) health risks.

Field study on the characteristics of scales in damaged multi-material water supply pipelines: Insights into heavy metal and biological stability

Microbial corrosion and heavy metal accumulation in metal water supply pipelines aggravate scale formation and may result in pipeline leakage or bursting events. To better understand the corrosion and corrosion products in the damaged pipes, deposits excavated from three damaged pipes after 22-26 year service periods were analyzed. Using a combination of advanced micro-mineral techniques and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, the micromorphology, chemical composition, and bacterial community were investigated systematically. Unlined pipe wall scales ruptured while lined pipes leaked due to joint scales. Dendrogram correlation results demonstrated that V/As, Al/Pb, and Cr/Mn clusters exhibited co-adsorption and co-precipitation characteristics. FTIR and XRD analysis detected the presence of γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH in loose scales, and Fe₃O₄ in rigid scales. Scales were colonized by various corrosion bacteria, with sulfate reducing bacteria and ammonia producing bacteria being dominant in the scales of anticorrosive and non-corrosive pipe, respectively. Tl, Ca, Al, and Pb exhibited an extremely positive correlation with Rhodocyclaceae, Ferritrophicum, Thermodesulfovibrionia, and Clostridiaceae. Al and V presented a potential Hazard Quotient risk to consumers, while Cd was potentially bioavailable in all inner scales. Overall, this study provides valuable information for the effective management and avoidance of corrosion-induced pipeline damage and heavy metal release.

Heavy metal enrichment in drinking water pipe scales and speciation change with water parameters

Pipe scales that form in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) can accumulate pollutants that may be re-released into bulk water, posing a significant threat to water safety. This study aims to evaluate the pollutant enrichment capacity of the pipe scale and identify speciation changes in heavy metals under variations in water quality. When the water quality conditions changed, the forms of inorganic metal elements in drinking water pipe scales also changed and the proportion of unstable forms increased, thereby increasing the risk of secondary pollution. Morphological analysis showed that the pipe scale samples had porous structures and large specific surface areas (the maximum was 52.94 m²/g, which is higher than that of many natural adsorbents), which could promote the accumulation of contaminants. XRD profiles also showed that the pipe scale samples were rich in substances with heavy metal adsorption capacities, such as Fe₃O₄. As the pH changed from 6 to 10, no significant difference in the release of heavy metals was found. The maximum release of Cu, Cr, As, Pb, and Cd at pH 8 was 0.56, 0.51, 1.82, 0.84, and 0.72 μg/g, respectively. Although the amounts were small, the speciation distribution of the heavy metals changed significantly. In addition, the proportion of unstable fractions increased, which increased the release risk of the pipe scale. The presence of humic acid accelerated the dissolution of organic matter and metals in the pipe scale, which further proved that the pipe scales were unstable and susceptible to water quality conditions. The pipe scales could not maintain stability when the water quality changed, and the DWDS should be regularly monitored and cleaned when necessary.

Effect of Particle Concentration and Pipe Materials on the Formation of Biofilms in Drinking Water Distribution Systems

Microorganism rebreeding and biofilm shedding enter the water body in the process of a drinking water distribution system (DWDS), which poses a threat to public health. Particles in water can gather pollutants as well as providing favorable growth conditions for bacteria. To date, there are a few studies which focus on the relationship between particles and biofilm formation. Therefore, the microbial diversity of biofilms in the different pipe materials and the effect on particle concentration on biofilm formation were investigated in this study. Experiments were carried out under a simulative DWDS (including iron (DI) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe). The results showed that the microbial diversity in biofilms followed this order: DI pipe > PVC pipe > DI pipe (upper). Moreover, the microbial biomass of biofilm and the fluorescence intensity of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS, produced by microorganisms) were the largest in the absence of particles. The amount of biofilm bacterial and the fluorescence intensity of EPS both showed first an increasing and then decreasing trend with particle concentration increasing. When particle concentration was relatively low, the absorption of particles and bacteria played a major role, however, with the increasing particle concentration, more stable particle–particle were formed and thus, EPS was easily extracted, resulting in the increase of fluorescence intensity of EPS.

Global water shortage and potable water safety; Today's concern and tomorrow's crisis

Climate change, severe droughts, population growth, demand increase, and poor management during the recent decades have further stressed the scarce freshwater resources worldwide and resulted in severe water shortages in many regions. The water utilities address the water shortage by providing alternative source of water, augment the supplied water, supply intermittently, and even bulk water delivery under severe water shortage conditions. On the other hand, many households store water in building storage tanks to cope with insufficient delivery of potable water due to frequent interruptions. All these practices could pose crucial risks to the chemical and microbiological quality of the water. However, consistent monitoring and implementation of mitigation strategies could lower the potential risks associated with these practices. It is critical to identify the potential hazards resulting from the alternative water supplies and distribution practices to develop temporary and long-term monitoring and mitigation plans and reduce the microbial and chemical contamination of potable water delivered to the consumers. This paper provides a holistic review of the significant hazards associated with the practices employed by the water utilities and water consumers to alleviate the potable water shortage and discusses the required monitoring and mitigation practices.

Modeling iron release from cast iron pipes in an urban water distribution system caused by source water switch

Significant iron release from cast iron pipes in water distribution systems (WDSs), which usually occurs during the source water switch period, is a great concern of water utilities because of the potential occurrence of "red water" and customer complaints. This study developed a new method which combined in-situ water stagnation experiments with mathematical models and numerical simulations to predict the iron release caused by source water switch. In-situ water stagnation experiments were conducted to determine the total iron accumulation in nine cast iron pipes in-service in Beijing when switching the local water to treated Danjiangkou Reservior water. Results showed that the difference in the concentration increment of total iron in 24 hr (ΔCI_TI,24), i.e. short-term iron release, caused by source water switch was mainly dependent on the difference in the key quality parameters (pH, hardness, nitrate, Larson Ratio and dissolved oxygen (DO)) between the two source waters. The iron release rate (R_Fe) after switch, i.e. long-term iron release, was closely related to the pipe properties as well as the DO and total residual chlorine (TRC) concentrations. Mathematical models of ΔCI_TI,24 and R_Fe were developed to quantitatively reveal the relationship between iron release and the key quality parameters. The R_Fe model could successfully combine with EPANET-MSX, a numerical simulator of water quality for WDSs to extend the iron release modeling from pipe level to network level. The new method is applicable to predicting iron release during source water switch, thus facilitating water utilities to take preventive actions to avoid "red water".

Legionella: A Promising Supplementary Indicator of Microbial Drinking Water Quality in Municipal Engineered Water Systems

Opportunistic pathogens (OPs) are natural inhabitants and the predominant disease causative biotic agents in municipal engineered water systems (EWSs). In EWSs, OPs occur at high frequencies and concentrations, cause drinking-water-related disease outbreaks, and are a major factor threatening public health. Therefore, the prevalence of OPs in EWSs represents microbial drinking water quality. Closely or routinely monitoring the dynamics of OPs in municipal EWSs is thus critical to ensuring drinking water quality and protecting public health. Monitoring the dynamics of conventional (fecal) indicators (e.g., total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli) is the customary or even exclusive means of assessing microbial drinking water quality. However, those indicators infer only fecal contamination due to treatment (e.g., disinfection within water utilities) failure and EWS infrastructure issues (e.g., water main breaks and infiltration), whereas OPs are not contaminants in drinking water. In addition, those indicators appear in EWSs at low concentrations (often absent in well-maintained EWSs) and are uncorrelated with OPs. For instance, conventional indicators decay, while OPs regrow with increasing hydraulic residence time. As a result, conventional indicators are poor indicators of OPs (the major aspect of microbial drinking water quality) in EWSs. An additional or supplementary indicator that can well infer the prevalence of OPs in EWSs is highly needed. This systematic review argues that Legionella as a dominant OP-containing genus and natural inhabitant in EWSs is a promising candidate for such a supplementary indicator. Through comprehensively comparing the behavior (i.e., occurrence, growth and regrowth, spatiotemporal variations in concentrations, resistance to disinfectant residuals, and responses to physicochemical water quality parameters) of major OPs (e.g., Legionella especially L. pneumophila, Mycobacterium, and Pseudomonas especially P. aeruginosa), this review proves that Legionella is a promising supplementary indicator for the prevalence of OPs in EWSs while other OPs lack this indication feature. Legionella as a dominant natural inhabitant in EWSs occurs frequently, has a high concentration, and correlates with more microbial and physicochemical water quality parameters than other common OPs. Legionella and OPs in EWSs share multiple key features such as high disinfectant resistance, biofilm formation, proliferation within amoebae, and significant spatiotemporal variations in concentrations. Therefore, the presence and concentration of Legionella well indicate the presence and concentrations of OPs (especially L. pneumophila) and microbial drinking water quality in EWSs. In addition, Legionella concentration indicates the efficacies of disinfectant residuals in EWSs. Furthermore, with the development of modern Legionella quantification methods (especially quantitative polymerase chain reactions), monitoring Legionella in ESWs is becoming easier, more affordable, and less labor-intensive. Those features make Legionella a proper supplementary indicator for microbial drinking water quality (especially the prevalence of OPs) in EWSs. Water authorities may use Legionella and conventional indicators in combination to more comprehensively assess microbial drinking water quality in municipal EWSs. Future work should further explore the indication role of Legionella in EWSs and propose drinking water Legionella concentration limits that indicate serious public health effects and require enhanced treatment (e.g., booster disinfection).

Occurrence of Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Brazilian Water and the Risks They May Represent to Human Health

The risks of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds (P&EDC) to the environment and human health are a current topic of interest. Hundreds of P&EDC may reach the environment, hence, there is a need to rank the level of concern of human exposure to these compounds. Thus, this work aimed at setting a priority list of P&EDC in Brazil, by studying their occurrence in raw and drinking water, calculating health guideline values (GV), and estimating the risks of population exposure to water intake. Data on the Brazilian pharmaceutical market as well as published data of the monitoring of Brazilian natural and drinking water have been collected by means of an exhaustive literature review. Furthermore, many foreign data were also collected to enable a comparison of the values found in Brazilian studies. A list of 55 P&EDC that have the potential to be found in Brazilian water is proposed, and for 41 of these a risk assessment was performed by estimating their margin of exposure (ME), by considering their occurrence in drinking water, and guideline values estimated from reported acceptable daily intake (ADI) data. For seven compounds the risk was deemed high (three estrogens and four anti-inflammatories), whereas for another seven compounds, it was regarded as an 'alert' situation. Although such risk analysis is conservative, since it has been calculated based on the highest reported P&EDC concentration in drinking water, it highlights the need to enhance their monitoring in Brazil to strengthen the database and support decision makers. An analysis of the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance agents (antibiotics, resistant bacteria, and resistance genes) in surface waters was also carried out and confirmed that such agents are present in water sources throughout Brazil, which deserves the attention of policy makers and health agents to prevent dissemination of antimicrobial resistance through water use.

Iron particle formation under chlorine disinfection considering effects of deoxidizers in drinking water

Iron oxidation inevitably occurs in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) and can cause water quality problems such as increased turbidity and discoloration of tap water. Considering that chlorine disinfection is also widely used in DWDSs, the role of disinfectant and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in iron oxidation should not be neglected. Interestingly, here the well-known deoxidizer ascorbic acid (VC), which is also a food additive, could induce the formation of Fe₃O₄ besides FeOOH resulting in the color change from yellow to black in the presence of trichloroacetic acid (TCA, one of the most typical DBPs) and NaClO (disinfectant). The oxygen-containing functional groups in TCA and VC may bind Fe(II) to guide the crystal growth. Though the particles generated in the presence of TCA and NaClO together with VC had higher content Fe₃O₄ which would be more difficult to suspend, once disturbance happened, these particles could increase the turbidity and color of water into higher value than the particles formed without VC and those generated in the absence of TCA and NaClO. Therefore, the deoxidizer VC may control "yellow water" without disinfectant, but may deteriorate the water quality under disinfection conditions.

Spatial dynamics of bacterial community in chlorinated drinking water distribution systems supplied with two treatment plants: An integral study of free-living and particle-associated bacteria

With the expansion of cities, the deterioration of drinking water quality undergoing complex and long-distance distribution is gaining increasing attention. However, spatial variations between free-living bacteria (FLB) and particle-associated bacteria (PAB) in chlorinated drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) have not been fully explored, especially in complex water supply areas with multiple interconnected DWDSs. To fill this gap, this study utilized 16S rRNA approaches to characterize the spatial patterns of FLB and PAB in DWDSs with intersection regions. Based on distance-decay analysis, transportation distance is a potential driver of bacterial variation for both FLB (Pearson's r = -0.476, p < 0.01) and PAB. (Pearson's r = -0.352, p < 0.01). Moreover, the influence of transportation distance was further confirmed by a 1.20-99.45% decline in microbial contribution to the source of FLB and PAB communities in pipe water along the transportation pipelines. Meanwhile, significant difference (PERMANOVA, R² = 0.14, p < 0.01) was found between FLB and PAB in DWDSs. Average proportions of Pseudomonas spp. were 59.84% and 45.59% for the PAB and intersection regions based on the 16S rRNA results, respectively, suggesting that PAB are potential reservoirs for high-risk bacteria, and a greater microbial risk may exist in intersection regions. In summary, transportation distance and pipeline intersection exerted significant impacts on the FLB and PAB in DWDSs. Therefore, precautionary strategies for controlling microbial risks that consider different microbial components and intersection regions in long-distance and multi-plant DWDSs should be implemented.

Characterization of the synergistic relationships between nitrification and microbial regrowth in the chloraminated drinking water supply system

Deterioration of water quality is commonly found in secondary water supply systems (SWSSs), especially the growth of microbes. To explore the metabolic mechanism for rapid microbial regrowth in SWSSs, a regrowth potential assessment, flow cytometry, and quantitative PCR were conducted. Metagenomic and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed to better understand the microbial communities and metabolism. It was found that the increased biomass in the SWSS was significantly higher than that in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). Statistical analysis revealed that ammonia oxidation was the dominant driver of increased biomass in the SWSS. The abundances of ammonia oxidation bacteria, concentration of nitrogen species, and related enzymes demonstrated that ammonia oxidation in the SWSS was more vigorous than that in the DWDS. In the SWSS, the metabolism of the ammonia oxidation cluster was more vigorous, and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were the dominant nitrifying bacteria. Incomplete nitrification products were involved in the metabolism of heterotrophic bacteria and promoted the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in the SWSS. More attention should be given to controlling incomplete nitrification to improve tap water quality.
