Abstract
Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a low-cost, chemical-free single-step fabrication process and has shown its potential in water treatment, electronics, and sensing. LIG fabrication optimization is mostly explored for dense polyimide (PI) polymers. However, LIG-based filters and membranes for water treatment need to be porous, and additional steps are required to get porous surfaces from PI-based surfaces. Polyethersulfone (PES) porous membranes are cost-effective and are common in water purification as compared to PI; further, the optimization of LIG fabrication on PES-based porous membranes is not explored. So, this study demonstrated the fabrication, optimization, and characterization of LIG with different laser parameters such as power, speed, image density (ID), focusing, laser platforms, and membrane support layer effect on porous PES commercial (UP010) and lab-casted 15% PES (PES15) membranes. The performance of optimized LIG filters was tested for interfacial evaporation (IE)-based desalination in single and stacked layer configuration and water purification applications such as dye removal and disinfection. IE was done in Joule heating (JH) and solar heating (SH) modes, and the UP010-ID7 LIG filter showed the highest JH evaporation rates of ∼1.1, 1.8, and 2.82 kg m-2 h-1 in single, double, and triple stacked configurations, respectively. Using a JH IE setup, the best-performing UP010-ID7 LIG filters have also shown ∼100% removal of methylene blue dye from the contaminated water. Furthermore, all LIG filters showed a complete 6-log bacterial inhibition at the 5 V filtration experiments; at 2.5 V, the optimized LIG filters showed a higher removal than the non-optimized filters. Additionally, the LIGs obtained with the aluminum platform were the best quality. This work demonstrates that laser power, ID, platform, and membrane support are critical parameters for the best-performing PES-LIG filters, and they can be effectively utilized to fabricate PES-based LIG porous surfaces for various energy, environmental, and catalysis applications.

Anodic Polymerization of Phenylphenols in Methyl Isobutyl Ketone and Mesityl Oxide: Incorporation of a Cavitand into the Layers Formed for Sensing Phenols in Organic Media. Abstract
The electropolymerization of three phenylphenol isomers was studied in methyl isobutyl ketone and mesityl oxide, and the remarkable differences highlighted the importance of the carbon–carbon double bond in mesityl oxide. In the case of each substrate, a brownish deposit formed during the electrooxidation. The obvious difference between the polymers formed from the two solvents was recognized via voltammetric signal enhancement of 4-methoxyphenol and 4-chlorophenol, and it was only observed in the case of mesityl oxide. The experiments highlighted that incorporation of a cavitand with biphenyl groups on the upper rim of the polymers of phenylphenols improved the results to a small extent. The cavitand was, itself, electroactive without any fouling effect. As 2-phenylphenol is by far the cheapest of the three isomers, a cavitand was incorporated into its polymer, which was exploited to solve analytical problems while mesityl oxide was used as solvent. Useful quantifications were achieved in organic solvents; however, it failed under aqueous conditions due to the high hydrophobicity of the deposit. Application of differential pulse voltammetry for 4-methoxyphenol and 4-chlorophenol gave detection limits of 9.28 and 50.8 μM in acetonitrile, respectively. This procedure resulted in the immobilization of cavitand derivatives onto the electrode’s surface, and the layer formed offered selective sensing of phenols by electrochemical methods.

Abstract
Polyelectrolyte adhesives, either poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] or poly(methacrylic acid), functionalized with a surface-active calix[4]resorcinarene were grafted onto silicon wafers. Adhesion studies on these grafted-to brushes using polyelectrolyte hydrogels of opposite charge showed that it is the calix[4]resorcinarene, rather than adsorption of polyelectrolyte monomers, that adheres the brush to the silicon substrate. The adhesion measured was similar to that measured using polymers grafted from the surface, and was stronger than a control layer of poly(vinyl acetate) under the same test conditions. The limiting factor was determined to be adhesive failure at the hydrogel-brush interface, rather than the brush-silicon interface. Therefore, the adhesion has not been adversely affected by changing from a grafted-from to a grafted-to brush, demonstrating the possibility of a one-pot approach to creating switchable adhesives.

Abstract
A novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was fabricated through chemical binding SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and copper ferrocyanide (CuFC) layers onto a membrane surface simultaneously to improve the removal efficiency of Cs. The results indicated that the SiO2 NPs were strongly deposited onto the membrane surface, and the CuFC layer was firmly attached on the surface of SiO2 NPs and the membrane. CuFC/SiO2/PVDF membrane remained stable after the acidic solution and sonication stress treatments. CuFC/SiO2/PVDF membrane showed good permeate flux and high selectivity on removal of Cs, and adsorbing capacity reached 1440.4 mg m-2 for Cs. The membrane remained high rejections of Cs in a wide pH, and could be regenerated well by H2O2 and N2H4. Selective adsorption and electrostatic interaction govern the rejection of Cs. The coexisting cations decreased the rejection of Cs mainly in accordance to the order of cations' hydration radii as K+ > Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. In addition, the rejection of Cs could still reach 99.4% in 8 h in the filtration of humic acid solution and natural surface water. The membrane could removal of Cs from water effectively by directly rapid filtration, suggesting it can be applied as promising technology for radioactive wastewater treatment.

Abstract
We herein report the synthesis of novel "Janus" calix[4]arenes bearing four "molecular tethering" functional groups on either the upper or lower rims of the calixarene. These enable facile multipoint covalent attachment to electrode surfaces with monolayer coverage. The other rim of the calixarenes bear either four azide or four ethynyl functional groups, which are easily modified by the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), either pre- or postsurface modification, enabling these conical, nanocavity reactor sites to be decorated with a wide range of substrates to impart desired chemical properties. Redox active species decorating the peripheral rim are shown to be electrically connected by the calixarene to the electrode surface in either "up" or "down" orientations of the calixarene.

Abstract
Self-assembled molecular films of two cobalt porphyrins with amine groups at different positions—(5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(2-aminophenyl) porphyrin-cobalt(II), [Co(II) (T(o-NH2)PP)] and (5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-aminophenyl) porphyrin-cobalt(II), [Co(II)(T(p-NH2)PP)]—were formed on a gold substrate. The functionalized surfaces were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and electrochemical methods. Both modified gold surfaces completely mask the charge transfer of a [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− redox couple in solution, indicating the layer is highly resistive in behavior. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses revealed that the porphyrin film with amine groups at ortho positions shows a higher charge-transfer resistance with a better protective behavior compared to the para position modified surface. Raman, AFM and EIS data suggests that an ortho amine positioned molecule forms a more compact layer compared to the para-positioned molecule. This can be explained in terms of their orientation on the gold surface. [Co(II)(T(o-NH2)PP)] adopted a saddle shape orientation whereas [Co(II)(T(p-NH2)PP)] adopted a flat orientation on the gold surface. The porphyrin modified gold electrode catalyzes the oxygen reduction at lower potentials compared to the bare gold electrode. The shift in the overvoltage was higher in case of molecules with flat orientation compared to the saddle shaped oriented porphyrin molecules on the surface.

Abstract
A rapid chemiluminescence method is described for the determination of ketoprofen by combining the flow injection technique and its sensitizing effect on the weak chemiluminescence reaction between sulfite and acidic permanganate. The optimum conditions for the chemiluminescence emission were intensity. A mechanism for the chemiluminescence reaction has been proposed on the basis of chemiluminescent spectra. Ketoprofen can be determined over the concentration range of 5.0x10(-8) to 3.0x10(-6) mol/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999 and a detection limit of 2.0x10(-8) mol/L (3sigma). The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for 15 repetitive determinations of 1.0x10(-6) mol/L ketoprofen is 0.8%. The utility of this method was demonstrated by determining ketoprofen in capsules and human urine sample.

Abstract
A simple and novel electrochemical biosensor is described for differentiating between differing gene sequences on the basis of DNA hybridization events. Polyethylenimine-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes were used to immobilize single-stranded PCR fragments from plasmid DNA from the gene for pyruvate kinase. AC impedimetric measurements were first performed on these systems in buffer and then upon exposure to single-stranded DNA. When the electrode and solution DNA were complementary, a large drop in impedance was measured. Complementary DNA could be clearly detected at concentrations down to 1 fg/mL. Higher concentrations gave faster hybridization with saturation occurring at levels above 1 ng/mL. Responses were much lower upon exposure to noncomplementary DNA, even at higher concentrations, with the sensor showing a high degree of selectivity. This sensor format offers great promise for many DNA hybridization applications and lends itself to mass fabrication.

Abstract
A new and simple method permits control of the electrochemically active area of a carbon fiber microelectrode. An electrophoretic photoresist insulates the 10-microm-diameter carbon fiber microelectrodes. Photolysis of the photoresist followed by immersion of the exposed area into a developing solution reveals electroactive carbon fiber surface. The electroactive surface area exposed can be controlled with a good degree of reproducibility.

Abstract
This review provides an introduction to the field of thin films formed by Langmuir-Blodgett or self-assembly techniques and discusses applications in the field of biosensors. The review commences with an overview of thin films and methods of construction. Methods covered will include Langmuir-Blodgett film formation, formation of self-assembled monolayers such as gold-thiol monolayers and the formation of multilayers by the self-assembly of polyelectrolytes. The structure and forces governing the formation of the materials will also be discussed. The next section focussed on methods for interrogating these films to determine their selectivity and activity. Interrogation methods to be covered will include electrochemical measurements, optical measurements, quartz crystal microbalance, surface plasmon resonance and other techniques. The final section is dedicated to the functionality of these films, incorporation of biomolecules within these films and their effect on film structure. Species for incorporation will include antibodies, enzymes, proteins and DNA. Discussions on the location, availability, activity and stability of the included species are included. The review finishes with a short consideration of future research possibilities and applications of these films.

Abstract
A simple and novel electrochemical biosensor based approach is described for differentiating between differing species of fish on the basis of DNA hybridisation events. Screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with a variety of polymers were used to immobilise commercially available DNA in a single-stranded form. AC impedimetric measurements were firstly carried out on these systems and then upon exposure to single-stranded DNA solutions. When the electrode and solution DNA were complementary, a large drop in impedance was measured; this did not occur for non-matching DNA exposures. DNA hybridisation sensors for closely related species of fish were in the first instance developed as a demonstration for this approach. Species of fish such as herrings and salmon could be differentiated by this method. This sensor format offers great promise for many DNA hybridisation applications and lends itself to mass fabrication due to the simplicity and inexpensiveness of the materials and methods used. The hybridisation results were confirmed by use of ellipsometry to measure the characteristics of similar films deposited on silicon substrates.
