Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the effect of refeeding on production, blood biochemical parameters, and reproduction in underfed Kacang goat does. Twelve 2-3-year-old Kacang goats scored (body condition score [BCS]: 1-1.5) with poor body condition but appeared healthy, gave normal births 3-4 months before but no longer nursing their youngs, and anestrus were used in this study. The experiment consisted of 110 days with 14 days of adaptation period and 96 days of feeding treatment and data collection. After the adaptation period, the animals were divided into two groups (A and B), with six animals each. During the first 40 days (underfeeding period), they were fed with kangkong (Ipomoea reptans) straw at a level of 2% of body weight (BW). For the following 56 days (refeeding period), each animal in group A was fed at the level of 4% BW per day while group B was fed at the level of 5% BW per day consisting of 50% kangkong straw and 50% concentrate. Feed intake, average daily gain, body condition, and estrus were assessed in the period of underfeeding and refeeding. Blood samples were collected at the end of the underfeeding and refeeding period for blood biochemical parameter analyses. During the underfeeding period, the animals were anestrous and had poor body condition (BCS: 1.17-1.33) and high serum levels of cortisol, progesterone, and estradiol. Refeeding resulted in a significant increase in BCS (2.75-3.0), restoring estrous cycle, and reduced serum cortisol and progesterone level (p < 0.05). The Kacang goats had good compensatory growth. It could be concluded that refeeding at the level of 4-5% BW would restore undernourished goats' clinical condition, productivity, and reproductive performance after 8 weeks of refeeding.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the effect of three schemes of ovum pick-up (OPU) on follicular dynamics, oocytes recovery, oocytes quality, gene expression, nuclear maturation and in-vitro developmental competence of oocytes in Sahiwal cattle. Considering the follicle population, all the cows were divided equally in a 3 × 3 cross over design, and each cow received one of the three treatments: (a) twice weekly (TW; n = 6), (b) once weekly (OW; n = 6) and (c) bi-weekly OPU (BW; n = 6) in three periods, with the first OPU conducted on 4, 7 and 14 days after second dominant follicle puncture (DFP) in the TW, OW and BW OPU interval groups, respectively. The collected cumulus oocytes complexes (COCs) were graded into A, B, C and D grades depending on the number of layers of cumulus cells and homogeneous nature of cytoplasm. Nuclear maturation was assessed by staining the oocytes with Hoechst 33342. The growth rate (mm/day) of dominant follicle (DF) (F1) (0.49 ± 0.21 vs. 0.71 ± 0.26 vs. 1.30 ± 0.27) and first subordinate follicle (F2) (0.85 ± 0.27 vs. 0.71 ± 0.25 vs. 1.06 ± 0.29) did not differ (p > .05) among all the three groups. The proportion of animals bearing a corpus luteum (CL) in the BW OPU interval group (53.3%) was significantly higher (p < .05) as compared to TW (13.3%) and OW (18.3%) OPU interval groups. The number of medium-sized follicles and oocyte with grade A and B were significantly higher (p < .05) in the TW (1.16 ± 0.21 and 33.88 ± 0.03) OPU interval group as compared to the OW (0.88 ± 0.22 and 21.54 ± 0.03) and BW (0.55 ± 0.21 and 21.89 ± 0.02) OPU interval groups. However, the number of degenerated oocytes in BW (0.85 ± 0.16) OPU interval group was significantly higher (p < .05) as compared to the TW (0.16 ± 0.15) and OW (0.44 ± 0.16) OPU interval groups. Expression level of growth differentiation factor 9 in TW OPU interval group was significantly higher (p < .05) as compared to the OW and BW OPU interval groups. Likewise, expression level of bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) in the TW and BW OPU interval groups was significantly higher (p < .05) as compared to the OW OPU interval group. The nuclear maturation rate was significantly higher in the TW (63.64 ± 0.07) and BW (59.26 ± 0.08) OPU groups as compared to OW (51.43 ± 0.06) OPU interval group. However, the cleavage rate (59.30 ± 0.06 vs. 44.29 ± 0.06 vs. 56.67 ± 0.06) did not differ (p > .05) among the three groups. Whereas, the blastocyst rate tended to be higher (p = .06) in the TW (29.07 ± 0.05) and BW (28.33 ± 0.04) OPU interval groups as compared to OW (18.57 ± 0.05) OPU interval group. Taken together, it can be concluded that TW OPU interval scheme enhances the medium-sized follicles resulting in good quality oocytes, regulates the oocyte-derived paracrine factors, leading to higher nuclear maturation rates and improved embryonic development in-vitro.

Abstract
Simple Summary Water is one of the most important nutrients to livestock. It is so essential that more than half the volume of the animal's body is water. However, its availability is threatened by the irreversible changes in climate, which has culminated into reduced rainfall in most regions of the world. Such an increasing threat to regular water supply, and by extension to food security and livelihood has forced a shift from large to small ruminant production, especially in regions experiencing low rainfall, with farmers taking advantage of their adaptive process and efficiency of water use. Small ruminants, especially desert goats, can adaptively survive in water-limited areas while trekking long distance in search of feed and they will regain any weight loss at the next watering point. Further research is needed on adaptive indigenous breeds of small ruminants since tolerance to water scarcity is breed dependent, so that improvements can be made through effective selection and breeding program. Abstract The availability and sustainability of suitable and good quality drinking water is a global concern. Such uncertainties threaten livestock production with an attendant ripple effect on food security. Small ruminants, including sheep and goats, appear to be promising to smallholder farmers in solving this problem because of their ability to survive in water-limited areas and harsh environment when compared with large ruminants. Their small body size is also seen as an advantage, because less water will be required for proper digestion and feed utilization. Therefore, this review will provide information regarding the adaptive responses of small ruminants on thermoregulation, blood metabolites, immune status, drug pharmacokinetics, reproduction and hormonal indices during the period of water stress. Adaptable and indigenous breeds are known to be more tolerant to water stress than selected breeds. A drop in feed intake and weight reduced respiratory rate and increased concentration of blood metabolites are the general effects and/or observations that are encountered by small ruminants during the period of water stress. The concept of water tolerance either as deprivation and/or restriction of indigenous and adaptable breeds of small ruminants is gaining ground in research studies around the world. However, more research, however, seeking to explore water tolerance capacity of adaptable breeds especially in arid and water limiting areas are still needed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize insulin, leptin and IGF-1 profiles after undernutrition in pregnant ewes with different initial body condition (iBCS) and to investigate embryo quality, uterine gene expression and presence and location of proteins during early gestation (day 5). Thirty-six Rasa Aragonesa ewes were divided into 2 groups with different BCS: BCS> 2.75 (high, H, n = 19) and BCS <2.25 (low, L, n = 17) and they were randomly assigned to two nutritional treatments: 1.5 maintenance (M) (control, C) or 0.5 (M) (undernourishment, U) times the daily maintenance requirements establishing four groups: high-iBCS control (HC, n = 9), high-iBCS undernourished (HU, n = 10), low-iBCS control (LC, n = 9) and low-iBCS undernourished (LU, n = 8). High-iBCS ewes presented higher concentration of IGF-1, reflecting a better metabolic status in these animals. There was a greater proportion of high-iBCS ewes presenting more than one CL (P < 0.05), and associated greater P4 plasma concentration, number of recovered embryo and a tendency for higher embryo viability rate (P = 0.13). In uterus, undernourished ewes tended to present lower P4 (P = 0.09) and higher E2 concentration (P = 0.10). Inmunostaining of uterine progesterone and estrogen receptors (PR and ERα) was not affected by iBCS and nutritional treatment. Ewes with low-iBCS tended to have more INSR mRNA, and undernourished ewes tended to have more IGFBP2 mRNA expression (P < 0.08). An interesting finding was that the uterine response to undernutrition was dependent on iBCS: a higher expression of GHR (P < 0.05) and a tendency in IGFBP5 (P = 0.09) mRNA was found in undernourished than control ewes but only in the high-iBCS group. In summary, the present study demonstrates that the endocrine response and the uterine gene expression to undernutrition depend on the initial body energy reserves (iBCS) and appears to be associated with a differential embryo quality.

Abstract
AbstractThe reduced fertility that is becoming more evident in high yielding dairy cows may be related to many factors including changes in milk production, food intake and fluctuations in body condition. Metabolic and production markers have been studied as a way of predicting success to a particular artificial insemination. Successful conception to a particular service was not associated with milk production, body condition or plasma concentrations of several indicators of metabolic state around the time if insemination. This highlights the importance of time of information collection in fertility management programmes. Increased food intake may reduce systemic progesterone concentrations. This is more evident in sheep than cattle, but a positive relationship between systemic progesterone early post mating and establishment of pregnancy in cattle has been reported. However, progesterone concentrations in the ovarian vein and endometrium are not strongly correlated with systemic progesterone. Thus, the significance of modest changes in systemic progesterone in affecting oocyte and embryo development must be questioned. Blood urea concentrations can be altered by diet, and reduced pregnancy rates have been reported in cows with high urea concentrations. However, in other recent studies, no difference was reported in serum urea in cows that conceived and those that failed to conceive. Pregnancy rate was equally high in heifers when in-vitro produced embryos were transferred to heifers on high and low urea diets. When embryos were produced in sheep on high and low dietary urea, the effects on embryo development appear to occur early in the developmental process, suggesting a substantial effect on the development of the oocyte. The developmental capacity of oocytes and quality of embryos is reduced in cattle maintained on extremely high dietary intakes. Oocyte developmental capacity is reduced in cows of higher genetic merit and embryo quality can be substantially reduced in the early postpartum period. Collectively, these results suggest that high dietary intake or high metabolic load is deleterious to normal oocyte development and establishment of pregnancy. This highlights the importance of further studies on the effect of dietary intake on metabolic state and follicle, oocyte and embryo development. In a practical context, these results highlight the importance of nutritional management and avoiding changes in the amount or type of diet around the time of mating in high-production dairy cows.

Abstract
Progesterone (P4), acting via its receptor, regulates uterine function and histotroph production, which are crucial to embryo growth. This study aimed to examine exogenous P4 effects on embryo size and differential endometrial gene expression at Day 19 of gestation using a 'dam size' sheep model of maternal constraint. Purebred Suffolk (S, genotypically large) embryos were transferred into recipient groups of Cheviot (C, genotypically small) or Suffolk ewes that had, or had not, been pre-treated with P4 from Days 0 to 6 of pregnancy. At Day 19S embryos were collected from four experimental groups: P4 pretreated S ewes (SP4; n=5), untreated S ewes (SnP4; n=15), P4 pretreated C ewes (CP4; n=7) and untreated C ewes (CnP4; n=21). Day-19 embryos from CP4 ewes were larger (P<0.05) than those from CnP4 ewes and similar in size (P>0.05) to embryos from SnP4 and SP4 ewes. Expression of mucin 1 (MUC1) and prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) was upregulated in uterine horns ipsilateral to the corpus luteum from CP4 ewes. Prostaglandin receptor (PGR), MUC1 and PTGS2 expression was upregulated, whilst cathepsin L (CTSL) and radical S-adenosyl methionine domain-containing 2 (RSAD2) expression was downregulated in the ipsilateral horn of SP4 ewes. This suggests that pretreating ewes with exogenous P4 may alleviate early pregnancy maternal constraint via mechanisms that alter uterine function. However, further research is required to investigate the timing of P4 administration and its impact on conception rates.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the gene expression of progesterone and estrogen receptor α (PR, ERα), insulin-like growth factor (IGF) 1, IGF-2, their receptor (IGFR1), IGF-binding proteins (BP) 1 to 6, insulin receptor, adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1/2), cyclooxygenase 2 (PTGS2), mucin 1 and to localize PR, ERα, IGF-1, IGFR1, PTGS2, and proliferating cellular nuclear antigen (PCNA) in the endometrium of pregnant (Day 19) Suffolk and Cheviot ewes carrying Suffolk and Cheviot embryos transferred within and reciprocally between breeds. Gene expression was determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and antigen determination was measured by immunohistochemistry in the luminal epithelium (LE), superficial and deep glands (SG, DG, respectively) and superficial and deep stroma. Gene expression of PR, IGF-1, IGFBP2, and IGFBP5 was higher in Suffolk than that in Cheviot ewes (P < 0.05). Greater abundance of IGF-2 and IGBP3 expression was found in Cheviot ewes carrying Cheviot embryos than Cheviot ewes carrying Suffolk embryos (P < 0.05). No staining for PR and ERα was observed in the LE, very scarce staining in SG and DG, whereas positive staining was observed in both superficial and deep stroma. No differences were found for PR staining, but Cheviot ewes had higher ERα staining intensity than Suffolk ewes (P < 0.05). Positive staining for IGF-1 was observed in all cell types except DG, and staining of IGFR1 was observed in all cell types. No differences among groups in staining were found for IGF-1 or IGFR1 in any cell type. Positive staining of PTGS2 was observed in LE and SG in all groups. An interaction between ewe and embryo breed affected PTGS2 staining (P < 0.05), whereby Cheviot ewes carrying Suffolk embryos had a lower PTGS2 staining than Suffolk ewes carrying Suffolk embryos. Positive staining of PCNA was found in LE and SG. Suffolk ewes carrying Suffolk embryos showed lower PCNA immunostaining than Cheviot ewes carrying Suffolk embryos (P < 0.05), whereas no differences were observed in ewes carrying Cheviot embryos. This study showed that gestation-related protein expression in the endometrium of Suffolk and Cheviot ewes is affected by both ewe and embryo breed at Day 19 of pregnancy.

Abstract
Embryos from undernourished and control donor ewes were transferred to undernourished and control recipient ewes. Progesterone and metabolic hormones were investigated in recipient ewes to determine their association with pregnancy success. Forty-five donor and 52 recipient Rasa Aragonesa ewes were fed 1.5 (control group; donor n=20; recipient n=25) or 0.5 (low group; donor n=25; recipient n=27) times the daily requirements for maintenance from the onset of estrous synchronization treatment to embryo collection and transfer. The embryos were collected 7days after the onset of estrus (day 0), and two good-quality embryos were transferred into each recipient ewe. The percentage of pregnant ewes on day 18 and 40 did not differ between the two groups, although the recipient undernourished ewes tended to have greater late embryonic mortality (from days 18-40) than the control recipient ewes (P=0.11). No effect of the nutrition of the donor was found. Recipients that became pregnant had a higher ovulation rate than non-pregnant ewes (P=0.02). Undernourished ewes had lower plasma insulin concentrations than control ewes (P=0.03), and those that suffered late embryo mortality (from days 18-40) tended to have lower insulin and progesterone concentrations than their counterparts that remained pregnant (P=0.06 and P=0.07, respectively). In this study, pregnancy in control and undernourished recipient ewes was not associated with the origin of the embryo (undernourished and control donors). In conclusion, failure to establish and maintain a pregnancy was associated with lower progesterone and insulin levels one week after estrus in recipient ewes.

Abstract
The goal was to estimate the heritabilities and genetic variances for pregnancy rate (PR) and calving date (CD) in Angus cattle along with the effect of weight, age, and sire on PR and CD. The data consisted of 4,999 records on PR and CD. Statistical models included year as a fixed effect; premating/postmating weight and age as covariates; and sire of embryo, maternal grandsire (MGS), and permanent maternal environmental effects as random effects. The models also included the interactions between herd and weight (weight change). Direct and maternal effects on PR and CD were estimated using sire MGS and animal models in REML. Pregnancy rate increased from age 2 to 6 and decreased from age 7 to 11 (P < 0.01) and this effect was independent of the culling strategy. There was a quadratic effect of premating cow weight independent of age on PR, with lower PR for low weights (P < 0.01). Overall, cows with a premating weight of 550 kg had the greatest PR. Cows that lost weight during mating had lower PR (P < 0.01). The maternal additive heritability for PR was 0.001 ± 0.012 and the direct additive heritability was 0.024 ± 0.020. The ratio of permanent maternal environmental variance to phenotypic variance was significant (0.048 ± 0.017; P < 0.01). This demonstrates that permanent maternal environmental effects play a major role in the repeatability of PR (0.049 ± 0.015; P < 0.01). The maternal additive heritability for CD was 0.040 ± 0.022, and the direct additive heritability was 0.076 ± 0.045. The ratio of permanent maternal environmental variance to phenotypic variance was low (0.014 ± 0.017) and the repeatability for CD was significant (0.0544 ± 0.0180; P < 0.01). This suggests that maternal genetic effects are as important as direct genetic effects on CD. There was a positive quadratic relationship between premating cow weight and CD with delayed calving for low/high weights (P < 0.01). Cows that lost weight over mating also had a later CD (P < 0.01). Comparisons of a weight-selected herd to the control herd showed differences (P < 0.05) in the optimal premating weight for early calving (control, 480 kg, and weight selected, 615 kg). Calving date was also more sensitive to changes in weight over mating in the weight selection herd (P < 0.05). Therefore, the set point in the weight-fertility axis and the sensitivity of fertility to changes in weight both changed in the weight selection herd.

Abstract
Maternal periconceptional undernutrition is associated with altered development and increased risks of adverse outcomes in the offspring. This circumstance is normal in flocks under extensive farming systems, which depend on natural forage resources. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of periconceptional undernutrition in sheep on behavioral and reproductive aspects of the offspring. Eighty ewes were synchronized in estrus and allocated to two groups (n=40) to be fed diets that provided 1.5 (C) or 0.5 (L) times the requirements for maintenance. Ewes were mated and 7 days later fed the control diet until lambing. One month after lambing, 32 lambs were exposed to tests to determine their cognitive and emotional responses. Six ewe lambs were euthanized and in vitro maturation and fertilization procedures were performed. L ewes presented a significant reduction in prolificacy and fecundity (P<0.05) in comparison with C ewes. Mean LW at lambing of L lambs was significantly higher than C lambs (C: 3.80 ± 0.11; L: 4.24 ± 0.15 kg, P<0.05). Lambs born from C ewes spent more time walking than L lambs (P<0.05) in the isolation test, revealing a decrease in the locomotor activity of lambs born from undernourished ewes around conception. Ewe lambs from the undernourished ewes presented a total population of oocytes 2.3 times higher than ovaries from control ewe lambs (60.0 ± 7.8 v. 140.0 ± 18.5 oocytes; P<0.05). In conclusion, periconceptional undernutrition is able to produce an increment in the body weight and the oocyte population, and an alteration of the locomotor activity of the offspring.

Abstract
The study was conducted to develop a simulated heat stress model for sheep depicting natural environmental conditions and to observe its impact on growth, reproductive performance, physiological adaptability, blood metabolites and endocrine responses in Malpura ewes. The experiment was conducted on 16 adult Malpura ewes for a period of 35 days. The animals were randomly divided into two groups of eight animals each (GI – control, GII – heat stress). The GII ewes were exposed to different temperature at different hours of the day i.e. 38°C at 1000–1100 hours; 40°C at 1100–1200 hours; 42°C at 1200–1300 hours; 43°C at 1300–1400 hours; 44°C at 1400–1500 hours and 42°C at 1500–1600 hours in a climatic chamber. Feed intake (P < 0.01), bodyweight (P < 0.05) and body condition score (P < 0.01) reduced significantly in GII as compared with GI ewes while water intake increased significantly (P < 0.01). All physiological responses also showed significant variation between the groups for treatment. In addition, all endocrine parameters showed highly significant (P < 0.01) variation for the treatment. Plasma cortisol increased significantly (P < 0.01) while T3 (P < 0.01) and T4 (P < 0.01) decreased significantly in GII as compared with GI ewes. Further, plasma oestradiol decreased significantly (P < 0.01) while plasma progesterone increased significantly (P < 0.01) in GII as compared with GI. Among the biochemical parameters, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, urea and blood urea nitrogen differed significantly between the groups. In addition, oestrus duration also significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in GII as compared with GI. Based on the results obtained from the study it can be concluded that simulated heat stress influenced the adaptive behaviour of sheep in terms of changes in physiological, blood biochemical and endocrine responses. Ultimately, their growth and reproductive performance are compromised during the process of adaptation to the simulated heat stress.

Abstract
To determine the effect of undernutrition on embryo production and quality in superovulated sheep, 45 ewes were allocated into two groups to be fed diets that provided 1.5 (control, C; n = 20) or 0.5 (low nutrition, L; n = 25) times daily requirements for maintenance, from oestrous synchronization with intravaginal sponges to embryo collection. Embryos were collected 7 days after the onset of oestrus (day 0). Low nutrition resulted in lower live weight and body condition at embryo collection (P < 0.05). Diet (P < 0.01) and day of sampling (P < 0.001) significantly affected plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and insulin concentrations. Plasma leptin concentrations decreased on day 7 only in L ewes. A significant effect of dietary treatment (P < 0.05) and day (P < 0.0001) was observed on plasma insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I concentrations. The number of recovered oocytes and embryos did not differ between the groups (L: 15.4 ± 0.4; C: 12.4 ± 0.4). Recovery rate was lower (P < 0.05) in the L (60%) than in the C group (73%). The total number of embryos and number of viable-transferable embryos (5.0 ± 0.3 and 3.4 ± 0.3 embryos, respectively) of the L group were lower (P < 0.1) when compared with controls (8.4 ± 0.4 and 6.2 ± 0.4 embryos, respectively). Undernutrition during the period of superovulation and early embryonic development reduced total and viable number of embryos. These effects might be mediated by disruption of endocrine homeostasis, oviduct environment and/or oocyte quality.

Abstract
Maternal undernutrition during gestation can condition offspring adult health, with the periconceptional period pointed out as a key period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal periconceptional undernutrition on pregnancy and offspring growth performance in sheep. 52 Merinos d'Arles ewes were fed to requirements (control group, C), whereas 64 ewes received 50% of their dietary needs from -15 to +30 days post-conception (restricted group, R). Thereafter, both groups were fed according to needs. Maternal body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and Non Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA), progesterone, leptin and cortisol plasma concentrations were monitored weekly during the restriction period and the following month, then monthly until weaning. Lambs were weighed weekly until weaning at 22 kg BW, then monthly. Plasma leptin was monitored monthly in lambs. The BW, BCS, and leptin concentrations were significantly decreased, whereas NEFA and cortisol concentrations were increased in R dams. Maximum progesterone concentration was higher in R ewes that had a high (10-25%) vs. low (0-10%) BW loss during restriction (27.9 ± 2.59 vs. 20.8 ± 2.00 ng/mL, P < 0.05). Overall, gestation was significantly longer in the R group (151.0 ± 0.3 vs. 149.4 ± 0.4 days, P < 0.001). There was no difference between groups for pregnancy rates, prolificacy, birth weight and lamb mortality, but the proportion of male lambs was significantly higher in the R group, only for singletons (16/26 vs. 9/26, P < 0.05). Lamb growth was not significantly modified by treatment. Leptin concentrations at birth were significantly lower in R vs. C males (6.15 ± 0.13 ng/mL vs. 7.42 ± 0.36 ng/mL, P < 0.05), whereas in females, leptin concentrations were significantly higher in R vs. C lambs at 4 mo of age (7.31 ± 0.27 ng/mL vs. 6.41 ± 0.29 ng/mL, P < 0.05). These results indicate that maternal periconceptional undernutrition in a hardy breed does not significantly affect lamb birth weight and growth rates, in contrast to previous reports in other breeds, suggesting that caution must be taken when extrapolating programming data between breeds and breeding conditions.

Abstract
A study was conducted to assess the effect of multiple stresses (thermal, nutritional, and walking stress) on the reproductive performance of Malpura ewes. The study was conducted for a period of 35 days covering two estrous cycles during summer season (April-May). The ewes were randomly allocated into two groups of twelve animals each namely, GI (n=12; Control), and GII (n=1 2; Multiple stresses). GI ewes were maintained in the shed, while GII ewes were subjected to multiple stresses (thermal, nutritional, and walking stress). The estrus % differed significantly (P< 0.05) between the groups. Estrus duration also showed similar trend to that of estrus %. Both conception and lambing rate also differed significantly (P< 0.05) between the control and multiple-stress group. In addition plasma estradiol and progesterone also showed significant difference between the groups. The study proved the detrimental effects of multiple-stresses on various reproductive parameters studied. Hence it is very pertinent to conclude that when two or more than two stressors occur simultaneously, the total impact may be severe on reproductive functions of the animals.

Abstract
A study was conducted to assess the effect of thermal, nutritional and combined stresses (thermal and nutritional) on the growth, oestradiol and progesterone levels during oestrus cycles in Malpura ewes. Twenty-eight adult Malpura ewes were used in the present study. The ewes were randomly allocated into four groups, viz., GI (n=7; control), GII (n=7; thermal stress), GIII (n=7; restricted feeding) and GIV (n=7; combined stress). The animals were stall fed with a diet consisting of 60% roughage and 40% concentrate. GI and GII ewes were provided with ad libitum feeding while GIII and GIV ewes were provided with restricted feed (30% intake of GI and GII ewes) to induce nutritional insufficiency. GII and GIV ewes were kept in climatic chamber at 40°C and 55% RH for 6 h a day between 10:00 and 16:00 hours to induce thermal stress for a period of two oestrous cycles. Parameters studied were body weight, oestrus incidences, plasma oestradiol 17-β, plasma progesterone, conception rate, gestation period, lambing rate, and birth weight of lambs. The results indicate that combined stress significantly (p<0.05) reduced body weight, oestrus duration, birth weight of lambs, and oestradiol 17-β whereas significantly (p < 0.05) increased oestrus cycle length and progesterone. Furthermore, the results reveal that on comparative basis, ewes were able to better adapt in terms of growth and reproduction to restricted feeding than thermal stress. However, when restricted feeding was coupled with thermal stress it had significant (p<0.05) influence on body weight, average daily gain, oestradiol 17-β and progesterone concentrations. This showed that combined stress were more detrimental for these reproductive hormones in Malpura ewes under a hot semi-arid environment.

Abstract
The effects of pregnancy and undernutrition on endometrial gene expression were investigated in ewes fed all or half their maintenance requirements and killed on Day 14 of pregnancy or of the oestrous cycle. The endometrial expression of progesterone, oestrogen, oxytocin and interferon receptors (PR, ERα, OXTR and IFNAR, respectively), cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), insulin-like growth factors (IGF)-I and -II, and IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) was studied by immunohistochemistry or real-time reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. The luminal epithelium of cyclic control ewes was devoid of PR staining and had relatively high levels of ERα, OXTR, COX-2 and IFNAR2. The presence of a conceptus decreased the in vitro uterine secretion of prostaglandin (PG) F2α and the expression of IFNAR2 in most cell types, and increased the gene expression of IGF-I and IGF-II. Undernutrition tended to increase ERα protein and gene, but decreased in vitro uterine secretion of PGE2 and the gene expression of IFNAR2 in cyclic ewes. There was no effect of undernutrition on pregnancy rates or the number of conceptuses recovered. Consistent with this, undernutrition of pregnant ewes did not have any effect on uterine gene expression. Moreover, in cases where changes were observed in cyclic ewes, these changes were negated when a conceptus was present.

Abstract
Fertility in high yielding dairy cows is declining, and there is increasing evidence to presume that oocyte and embryo quality are major factors in the complex pathogenesis of reproductive failure. In this report we present an overview of possible mechanisms linking negative energy balance (NEB) and deficiencies in oocyte and embryo developmental competence; specifically, in the high producing dairy cow. Changes in follicular growth patterns during a period of NEB can indirectly affect oocyte quality. The endocrine and biochemical changes, which are associated with NEB, are reflected in the microenvironment of the growing and maturing female gamete, and likely result in the ovulation of a developmentally incompetent oocyte. Even after an oocyte is successfully ovulated and fertilized, a full-term pregnancy is still not guaranteed. Inadequate corpus luteum function, associated with reduced progesterone, and probably also low insulin-like growth factor concentrations, can cause a suboptimal microenvironment in the uterus that is incapable of sustaining early embryonic life. This may partly account for the low conception rates and the high incidence of early embryonic mortality in high yielding dairy cows.

Abstract
In ruminants, nutrition is one of the exogenous inputs affecting reproductive function at different levels of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-gonadal axis. However, the exact mechanisms or even the identification of the signalling metabolic compounds by which nutrition affects reproductive function still need further clarification. The role of static body condition (BC) and its interaction with a short-term protein supplementation (PL), on secretion of metabolic hormones [growth hormone (GH), insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)], as well as on secretion of LH and progesterone (P4) was evaluated in sheep. Twenty-four Rambouillet ewes divided into two groups, with lower (LBC) and higher body condition (HBC), were randomly assigned within BC to one of two PL levels: low (LPL, 24% of crude protein; 14 g/animal/day), and high (HPL, 44% of crude protein; 30 g/animal/day). The secretion of GH, insulin, IGF-1 and LH was evaluated on day 10 of the oestrous cycle; appearance and timing of oestrous behaviour were previously detected using rams. Progesterone secretion was evaluated on day 13 of the same cycle. No differences were found (p > 0.05) between PL groups on serum GH concentrations during the sampling period (overall mean of 4.0 +/- 0.3 ng/ml), but a trend for lower values in HBC sheep was found (3.6 +/- 0.4 vs 4.4 +/- 0.4 ng/ml, p = 0.06). A BC effect was observed (p < 0.05) on serum IGF-1 level, with higher values in HBC sheep (p < 0.05). Neither BC nor PL affected (p > 0.05) secretion of LH and the number of corpora lutea, nor serum P4 and insulin concentrations. Results indicate a predominance of the static component of nutrition on sheep metabolic hormone responses, GH and IGF-1, with no effect of short-term PL on secretion of pituitary and ovarian hormones as well as luteal number and activity.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se as concentrações plasmáticas de triglicérides, colesterol, aspartato transaminase (AST) e progesterona (P4) em vacas Nelore não lactantes com elevado escore corporal, superovuladas com diferentes protocolos. Foram utilizados três grupos de animais, G1 (n=11), G2 (n=8) e G3 (n=5), superovulados com 500UI de FSH, 200mg e 180mg de FSH (hormônio folículo estimulante), respectivamente, em doses decrescentes, duas vezes ao dia, durante quatro dias. As amostras de sangue foram coletadas antes da superovulação (A), no terceiro dia da superovulação (B), no momento da inseminação artificial (C) e na coleta dos embriões (D). As concentrações de triglicérides, AST e colesterol foram verificados por espectrofotometria, e a de progesterona (P4) por radioimunoensaio. Não houve alteração (P>0,05) na concentração de triglicérides, AST e colesterol entre as amostras. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) do protocolo de superovulação sobre a concentração de triglicérides, AST e P4 nas diferentes amostras. O G2 apresentou menor concentração de colesterol (P<0,05) nas amostras A e B, possivelmente em razão da grande instabilidade dessa variável.

Abstract
The relationship between nutrition and reproduction in sheep has been the subject of research in several international groups. This review will particularly focus on the effects of undernutrition on the potential causes of reproductive failure including abnormalities of the ovum or the embryo, luteal inadequacy and failure of the supply of progesterone to the uterus, or the mechanisms involved in maternal recognition of pregnancy. The level of nutrition and peripheral progesterone concentrations are inversely related, and increased rates of embryo loss, associated with higher progesterone concentrations in ewes with low levels of nutrition have been reported. Undernutrition may act through changes in the distribution of progesterone in the endometrium. Thus, lower endometrial levels on day 5 of the cycle in ewes fed half of their maintenance requirements have been observed, providing a link between the known role of progesterone in embryo survival by the modulation of uterine function and the higher embryo losses found in undernourished ewes. The evidence of an effect of maternal nutrition on IFNtau secretion from the conceptus and of PGF2alpha production from the uterus is presented. Moreover, undernutrition provokes a reduction in the sensitivity of the endometrium to progesterone that may affect embryo survival. Finally, a state of undernutrition induces changes in the endometrial sensitivity to steroid hormones at early stages of pregnancy that could adversely alter uterine environment to the detriment of embryo survival.

Abstract
Factors that affect progesterone clearance from plasma and by hepatocytes in culture were examined in a series of experiments. In Exp. 1, the objective was to determine whether an increase in hepatic portal blood acetate or propionate could alter progesterone metabolism by the liver. For ewe lambs gavaged orally with sodium propionate compared with those gavaged orally with sodium acetate, serum progesterone concentrations began to diverge as early as 0.5 h after administration and were greater (P < 0.05) at 3 and 4 h after administration. The objective of Exp. 2 was to determine the effect of a single oral gavage of either sodium acetate or sodium propionate on peripheral insulin and glucagon concentrations. Ewes gavaged orally with sodium propionate had greater (P < 0.05) insulin concentrations at 0.5 and 1 h after gavage than ewes gavaged with sodium acetate. Furthermore, glucagon concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) at 0.5, 1, and 2 h for ewe lambs gavaged orally with sodium propionate compared with those receiving sodium acetate. The third experiment investigated the rate of in vitro progesterone clearance by cultured hepatocytes in response to treatment with different concentrations of insulin and glucagon. Progesterone clearance was reduced (P < 0.05) with the addition of 0.1 nM insulin compared with the control. Furthermore, there was a greater reduction (P < 0.05) in progesterone clearance in response to 1.0 and 10 nM insulin compared with the control and 0.1 nM insulin. No change was observed in progesterone clearance in hepatocytes treated with either physiological (0.01 and 0.1 nM) or supraphysiological (1.0 nM) glucagon. Supraphysiological concentrations of glucagon (1.0 nM) negated the effects of either 0.1 or 1.0 nM insulin on progesterone clearance by hepatocytes. However, with physiological concentrations of glucagon (0.1 nM) and 1.0 nM insulin, glucagon was not able to negate the reduction in progesterone clearance caused by insulin. These data are consistent with a paradigm in which elevated hepatic portal vein propionate increases plasma insulin in ruminants, which decreases progesterone clearance, thereby increasing serum progesterone concentrations.

Abstract
In the present study, it was investigated whether undernutrition affected the binding capacity, immunoreactivity and mRNA expression for uterine oestrogen and progesterone receptors (ER and PR, respectively) in sheep, as well as whether the responses were associated with changes in plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4), oestradiol (E2), glucose, fatty acids, insulin, leptin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I during the oestrous cycle. Twenty ewes were fed either 1.5 (C) or 0.5 (L) times their maintenance requirements and were killed on Day 5 or 14 of the cycle (Day 0 = oestrus). Compared with Group C, Group L had higher concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids and lower concentrations of insulin, leptin and IGF-I. Group L also had higher plasma concentrations of P4 during the final days of the luteal phase. At oestrus in both treatment groups, there were peaks in the concentrations of glucose, insulin and IGF-I. For ER and PR, transcript expression, binding capacity and immunoreactivity were higher on Day 5 than on Day 14 of the cycle. The binding capacities for ER and PR were lower in Group L than in Group C on Day 5. Group C showed more immunoreactive staining for ER than did Group L in two of five cell types, whereas no effect of treatment was observed for PR immunoreactivity. There was more PR mRNA in the uterine horn contralateral to the corpus luteum in Group C than in Group L ewes. We conclude that undernutrition impairs steroid receptor expression and binding capacity. This may alter the uterine environment and help explain the reductions in embryo survival.

Abstract
Maternal undernutrition and, under certain circumstances overnutrition, before or during pregnancy or during early postnatal life can alter reproductive function of the offspring. Effects can be exerted at many stages of development, from prior to conception until after birth and may be expressed at the time of the nutritional insult or later. Since patterns of development differ between species, it is probably more appropriate to consider effects in relation to a stage of development rather than relative to the time of birth. Effects exerted at one stage of development may be expressed later, even if the nutritional influence is no longer present. The signals by which maternal nutrition affects the offspring must be related to maternal nutritional state and must have the capacity to reach the embryo, to be 'read' by it and to modify expression of selected genes. It is suggested that single nutrients and/or metabolites are unlikely to have direct impacts on the pattern of development of the reproductive system and it is postulated that multiple endocrine and metabolic signals are involved. Whilst it has been shown that many components of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal system are modified by early life nutritional influences, understanding of the mechanisms through which these effects are exerted remains limited.

Abstract
The effect of plane of nutrition on progesterone receptor (PR) and estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) expression in ovine endometrium was investigated. Rasa Aragonesa ewes (n=26) were fed diets to provide either 1.5 (Group C) or 0.5 (Group L) times the daily maintenance requirement and were slaughtered at Days 5 or 10 of the estrous cycle (Day 0=estrus). PR and ERalpha immunoreactivity were analyzed in eight endometrial cell compartments, defined by cell type and location. Group L had less PR immunostaining on Day 5 (P<0.05), which is consistent with lesser endometrial content of progesterone found in such animals. Most cell types of Group C had down regulation of PR at Day 10, but in Group L, this pattern was observed only in three cell compartments. The lesser PR contents found at Day 5 in Group L ewes may explain the lack of inhibition of PR. No effect of treatment or day of the estrous cycle was observed in ERalpha. Results indicate that endometrial PR is affected in a cell type, in specific manner, by plane of nutrition.

Abstract
Cell responsiveness to steroid hormones is related to the number and affinity of its receptors, thus factors affecting steroid expression will influence tissue sensitivity and functionality. The present review discusses the role of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in sheep female reproductive physiology. The mechanism of steroid hormone action in the target cell is introduced first; the tissue distribution, physiological functions and regulation of oestrogen receptor subtypes and progesterone receptor isoforms in ruminants are reported. The role of steroid receptors in target tissues (with emphasis on the uterus and pituitary gland) during different physiological events is addressed in an attempt to clarify oestrogen and progesterone actions in different developmental and reproductive stages: prepubertal period, oestrous cycle, pregnancy, post-partum period and seasonal anoestrus. The present review shows how the distinct reproductive stages are accompanied by dramatic changes in uterine receptor expression. The role of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in the molecular mechanism responsible for premature luteolysis that results in subnormal luteal function is discussed. Finally, the effect of nutrition on sex steroid receptor expression and the involvement on reproductive performance is reported.

Abstract
The effect of exogenous melatonin on prostaglandin secretion was measured on Rasa Aragonesa ewes. Fourteen ewes received an 18 mg melatonin implant (M+) on 10 April and were compared with 13 control animals (without implants M-). Twenty days later, intravaginal pessaries were inserted in all animals to induce a synchronized oestrus (day 0). On day 14, ewes were injected, i.v., with 0.5 IU oxytocin. Plasma 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2alpha) (PGFM) concentrations were measured to assess uterine secretory responsiveness to oxytocin. After euthanasia, pieces of endometrium were collected to determine progesterone content and PGE(2) and PGF(2alpha) secretion in vitro, in the presence or absence of either 20 microg/ml recombinant ovine interferon-tau (roIFNt) or 1 nmol/l oxytocin in the medium. Endometrial progesterone content was similar in the two treatments (M+: 50.25+/-17.34 ng/mg tissue, M-: 43.08+/-11.21 ng/mg tissue). M+ ewes that responded to oxytocin had significantly higher plasma PGFM concentrations between 10 and 80 min after oxytocin administration, a higher mean PGFM peak (P<0.001), higher plasma PGFM levels after the challenge (P<0.05) and higher plasma progesterone concentrations (P<0.01) than control ewes. In the in vitro experiment, M+ and M- control samples secreted similar amounts of PGE(2). The presence of roIFNtau and oxytocin only stimulated PGE(2) production (P<0.05) in M- tissues. Control M+ tissues secreted higher amounts of PGF(2alpha) (P=0.07) and PGF(2alpha) secretion was significantly (P<0.01) stimulated by roIFNtau. Oxytocin produced this effect only in M- samples (P<0.01). In conclusion, although previous studies have demonstrated a positive effect of melatonin on lamb production, PGF(2alpha) secretion is higher in vitro and the PGE(2):PGF(2alpha) ratio is unfavourable in response to IFNtau, which could affect embryo survival. Whether or not these mechanisms are similar in pregnant ewes remains to be elucidated.

Abstract
The dairy industry in the United States has changed dramatically in the last decade. Milk production per cow has increased steadily because of a combination of improved management, better nutrition, and intense genetic selection. Dairy farms are larger, and nearly 30% of the dairy cows in the United States are on farms with 500 or more cows. The shift toward more productive cows and larger herds is associated with a decrease in reproductive efficiency. Cows with the greatest milk production have the highest incidence of infertility, but epidemiological studies suggest that, in addition to milk production, other factors are probably decreasing reproductive efficiency in our dairy herds. The reproductive physiology of dairy cows has changed over the past 50 yr, and physiological adaptations to high milk production may explain part of the reproductive decline. Critical areas for new research include control of the estrous cycle, metabolic effects of lactation on reproduction, mechanisms linking disease to reproduction, and early embryonic mortality. Solving reproductive loss in dairy cows will not be easy because only a small number of research groups study reproduction in postpartum dairy cows. Therefore, the present research base will need to be expanded. For this to occur, research funding must be increased above its current level and a renewed emphasis must be placed on solving the emerging crisis of infertility in dairy cows.

Abstract
In mid-September, 1 month before the insertion of intravaginal pessaries to induce sexual activity, blood samples were collected every 4 days from 16 ewe lambs aged 7 months, in order to determine the incidence of ovulations by measurement of plasma progesterone concentrations. It has been studied whether the response to a progestagen treatment of ewe lambs apparently close to puberty could be modified by the onset of the ovarian events preceding puberty. The effect of the presence or absence of ovulations prior to progestagen treatment on the potential reproductive performance (fertility, litter size and fecundity), embryo development [embryo quality and interferon-tau (IFNtau) secretion], luteal function (progesterone secretion in vitro) and endometrial progesterone content was studied in seven ovulating (Ov+) and nine nonovulating ewe lambs (Ov-) on day 14 after mating. The best potential reproductive results were obtained with Ov+ animals, although these differences could not be initially attributed to either different progesterone secretion in vitro or concentration of endometrial progesterone. Irrespective of the experimental groups, secretion of progesterone by luteal tissue from ewe lambs with normal embryos was significantly greater (p<0.05) than that of animals with abnormal embryos or with no embryos. Normal embryos secreted a higher amount of IFN-tau than those embryos classified as abnormal (p<0.07). In conclusion, ewe lambs which exhibit luteal activity before puberty have the highest levels of reproductive performances after a progestagen treatment. Corpora lutea from ewe lambs with normal embryos had higher rates of progesterone secretion in vitro and their embryos had a higher IFN-tau production by the embryos, indicating greater capacity for subsequent development.

Reproductive efficiency in high yielding dairy cows has decreased over the past 50 years, despite significant gains in genetic selection for increased milk output. One possible reason for this decline has been a change in the nutritional intake to meet the increased energy and protein demands for higher milk production. Excess energy intake in sheep will lead to significant reductions in progesterone concentrations; the effects in cattle are not so clear. Nutrition, unless radically changed, will have little effect on gonadotropin concentrations in ruminants, and this is in contrast to the situation for pigs and for primates, where very short-term nutritional changes manifest themselves in altered gonadotropin secretion. Cattle with reduced energy intake have smaller dominant follicles and more three-wave cycles, compared with animals on higher feed intakes. One of the main areas where nutrition influences reproductive efficiency is at the level of embryo production. Several studies indicate that excess energy intake reduces the response to superovulation and also decrease the yield of embryos and alters expression of some gene constructs within the developing embryo. The mechanism of this effect is not clear but indications are that the quality of the oocytes may be compromised. Indeed recent data indicate that nutritional changes around the time of mating may have detrimental effects on the establishment of pregnancy in heifers. Thus, nutritional balancing is critical for high-yielding dairy cows, in particular. The challenge remains to modify nutritional and management strategies in such cows to maintain the levels of production made possible by genetic selection and still maintain an acceptable level of fertility.

Abstract
Two groups of ewes were fed to provide 1.70 x (high energy group; n = 15) or 0.56 x (low energy group; n = 15) energy requirements for maintenance of liveweight from 14 d before a synchronized mating in November until slaughter at 9 or 15 d after mating. We investigated the effects on interferon-tau (IFN tau) secretion by the conceptuses, prostaglandin F2 alpha (PG) production in vitro by endometrial tissue, and associated rates of embryo mortality, endometrial progesterone content and progesterone production by luteal tissue. No differences between groups in pregnancy rate were detected on Day 9 between the 2 groups. Proportionately (6/6 vs 2/5), there were more pregnant ewes in the high energy group on Day 15, although this difference did not reach significance (P = 0.06). The proportion of corpora lutea represented by embryos was significantly lower in undernourished ewes (P < 0.05). Secretion in vitro of PG was lower in the 2 pregnant ewes of the low energy group on Day 15, and it was accompanied by higher IFN tau secretion by conceptuses recovered from these ewes. However, the limited number of pregnant ewes recorded on Day 15 prevented any statistical comparison. Neither mean endometrial content of progesterone nor ovarian venous progesterone concentrations and production of progesterone by luteal were affected by nutrition. The provisional results of the present experiment indicate that undernutrition may induce a reduction in the rate of secretion of IFN tau and can therefore increase production of PG from the endometrium. This could initiate luteolysis. The lower pregnancy rates observed in underfed ewes could be mediated through this alteration in the signal of maternal recognition of pregnancy. However, these findings remain to be shown in further experiments including a larger number of animals, as they only represent data from 2 undernourished animals.
