Abstract
Detection of flammable, explosive and toxic butyl acetate helps to avoid accidents and protect health in industrial production. However, there are few reports on butyl acetate sensors, especially highly sensitive, low detection limit and highly selective ones. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) analyzes the electronic structure of sensing materials and the adsorption energy of butyl acetate. The effects of Ni element doping, oxygen vacancy constructions, and NiO quantum dot modifications on the modulation of the electronic structure of ZnO and on the adsorption energy of butyl acetate are investigated in detail. Based on the DFT analysis, the NiO quantum dot modified jackfruit-shaped ZnO is synthesized via thermal solvent method reduction. The NiO/ZnO sensor has a response 502.5 for 100 ppm butyl acetate with 100 ppb detection limit, and the response for 100 ppm butyl acetate is at least 6.2 times higher than 100 ppm methanol, 100 ppm benzene, 100 ppm triethylamine, 100 ppm isopropanol, 100 ppm ethyl acetate and 100 ppm formic acid. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) explores the change of oxygen vacancies in sensor accompanied with the addition of Ni element and reveales the reason for the change of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract
Within this study sixteen odour active substances (1-butanol, butyl acetate, 3-methyl-4-heptanone, butyl acrylate, styrene, ethylbenzene, propylbenzene, cumene, sec-butylbenzene, benzaldehyde, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, 1,2-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,7-dimethylnaphthalene), that have previously been identified in acryl paints were quantified in ten black acrylic paint samples using GC-GC-MS (heart-cut two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) after prior extraction and purification via solvent assisted flavour evaporation. In this case, the preceding analysis of the most abundant odour active volatiles via GC-O (gas chromatography-olfactometry) provided indications on which smell properties might be linked with elevated and concerning levels of possibly harmful substances. Based on that work, four samples raised attention due to their mainly repelling or unpleasant odour with mainly aromatic, solvent-like, mothball-like or geranium-like smell impressions. The remaining samples either showed fruity/fermented, fruity/apple juice-like, mushroom-like or cocoa-like/earthy odour qualities. The repelling and unpleasant odour was generally linked to naphthalene or benzene derivatives that are of concern with regard to being potential carcinogens. With concentrations ranging as high as from 3.75 mg/kg to 143.41 mg/kg, n-butanol was found to be the odour active substance with the highest concentrations in all but one paint sample. The results showed that all paints contain different and specific patterns of the analysed odour active substances and volatiles. Whereas only two samples revealed no elevated concentration of any of the quantified substances, two samples (A9 and A10) showed elevated levels for all or nearly all substances. The concentrations for single substances were generally lower than the recommended exposure limit and therefore unlikely to cause any adverse effects with regards to toxicity and irritation as single constituents. However, as a group of substances these might exert adverse health effects due to combined or synergistic effects. Based on these observations, the occurrence of combinations of potentially carcinogenic substances in products which are occupationally used on a daily basis or are in direct skin contact should thus be regarded with care in the future.

Abstract
Macrophages treated with the flavoring chemicals found in flavored electronic cigarettes have been shown to induce an inflammatory response, however, limited data are available on the effect of aerosol exposure to these chemicals. We hypothesized that aerosol exposure to flavoring chemicals found in commercially available flavored e-liquids would result in an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines in macrophages. Raw264.7 macrophage cell lines were exposed to a low and high dose of propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin (PG/VG) with almond flavoring benzaldehyde (280 μg/ml and 2.1 mg/ml), PG/VG with spicy/clove flavoring eugenol (3.5 mg/ml and 12 mg/ml), or PG/VG with apple flavoring hexyl acetate (500 μg/ml and 2.5 mg/ml). Exposure to PG/VG with 2.1 mg/ml benzaldehyde resulted in a significant increase in KC levels compared to air and PG/VG exposed cells. Exposure to PG/VG with both doses of hexyl acetate resulted in a significant increase in KC and IL-6 levels compared to air exposed cells. Exposure to PG/VG with both doses of eugenol resulted in a significant increase in KC and IL-6 levels compared to air and PG/VG exposed cells. These data indicate the ability of aerosol exposure to e-cigarette flavoring chemicals to significantly increase pro-inflammatory cytokine release in macrophages.

Abstract
Objectives Cultural familiarity and safety must be considered when assessing olfactory ability. The YSK olfactory function (YOF) test is a new olfactory function test using culturally familiar odorants to Koreans. Methods The YOF test comprises three subtests for threshold (T), discrimination (D), and identification (I). The identification test included eight universal and four Korean culture-friendly odorants, which were selected considering eight major functional groups. Data were obtained from 1,127 subjects over 19 years old. Subjects were classified as having normosmia (n=542), hyposmia (n=472), and anosmia (n=113) by self-reported olfactory function. The YOF test and the Korean version of the Sniffin’ stick test (KVSS-II) were performed on the same day in random order. Diagnostic cutoffs for anosmia and hyposmia were calculated using the Youden index (J). Results The mean values for each T/D/I subtest and the total TDI score were as follows: normosmia (T, 4.6±2.3; D, 8.6±2.1; I, 11.1±1.7; TDI score, 24.2±4.5); hyposmia (T, 3.3±2.2; D, 7.1±2.5; I, 9.2±3.1; TDI score, 19.5±6.4); and anosmia (T, 1.7±1.2; D, 5.1±2.5; I, 5.0±3.2; TDI score, 11.8±5.6). The correlation coefficients between the YOF test and KVSS-II were 0.57, 0.65, 0.80, and 0.86 for T, D, I, and the TDI score, respectively (P<0.001). The diagnostic cutoffs were a TDI score ≤14.5 (J=0.67) for anosmia and 14.5(TDI score ≤21.0 (J=0.38) for hyposmia. The diagnostic efficacy of the YOF test (area under the curve [AUC], 0.88) was equivalent to that of the KVSS-II (AUC, 0.88; P=0.843; DeLong method). Conclusion The YOF test is a new olfactory test using safe and Korean culture-friendly odorants. It showed equivalent validity with the conventional olfactory function test. Furthermore, the YOF test provides information on the major functional groups of odorants, potentially enabling a more comprehensive interpretation for patients with olfactory disorders.

Abstract
A literature review and health effects evaluation were conducted for n-butanol, a chemical that occurs naturally in some foods, which is an intermediate in the production of butyl esters and can be used as a gasoline additive or blend. Studies evaluating n-butyl acetate were included in the review as n-butyl acetate is rapidly converted to n-butanol following multiple routes of exposure. The primary n-butanol health effects identified were developmental and nervous system endpoints. In conducting the literature review and evaluating study findings, the following observations were made: (1) developmental findings were consistently identified; (2) neurodevelopmental findings were inconsistent; (3) evidence for nervous system effects was weak; (4) comparing internal doses from oral and inhalation exposures using physiologically based pharmacokinetic models introduces uncertainties; and (5) a lack of mechanistic information for n-butanol resulted in the reliance on mechanistic data for ethanol, which may or may not be applicable to n-butanol. This paper presents findings from a literature review on the health effects of n-butanol and proposes research to help reduce uncertainty that exists due to database limitations.

Abstract
The existing information supports the use of this material as described in this safety assessment. Isobutyl propionate was evaluated for genotoxicity, repeated dose toxicity, reproductive toxicity, local respiratory toxicity, phototoxicity/photoallergenicity, skin sensitization, and environmental safety. Data from read-across analog isobutyl acetate (CAS # 110-19-0) show that isobutyl propionate is not expected to be genotoxic. Data from read-across analog isoamyl acetate (CAS # 123-92-2) show that there are no safety concerns for isobutyl propionate for skin sensitization under the current declared levels of use. The repeated dose and reproductive endpoints were evaluated using the TTC for a Cramer Class I material, and the exposure to isobutyl propionate is below the TTC (0.03 mg/kg/day and 0.03 mg/kg/day, respectively). For the local respiratory endpoint, a calculated MOE >100 was provided by read-across analog butyl acetate (CAS # 123-86-4). The phototoxicity/photoallergenicity endpoints were evaluated based on UV spectra; isobutyl propionate is not expected to be phototoxic/photoallergenic. The environmental endpoints were evaluated; isobutyl propionate is not PBT as per the IFRA Environmental Standards. For the risk assessment, isobutyl propionate was not able to be risk screened as there were no reported volumes of use for North America or Europe in the 2015 IFRA Survey.

Abstract
The German Ad Hoc Working Group on Indoor Air Guidelines of the Indoor Air Hygiene Committee and the Supreme State Health Authorities issues indoor air guide values to protect public health. No suitable human studies are available for health evaluation of ethyl acetate in indoor air. In a well-documented subchronic inhalation rat study, assessed as reliable, local effects were observed in nasal epithelia. The incidence and severity of degeneration of the nasal olfactory epithelium was dose-dependent. This study leads to a lowest observed adverse effect concentration (LOAEC) of 1280 mg ethyl acetate/m(3) indoor air, corresponding to a LAEC for continuous exposure of 230 mg ethyl acetate/m(3), for the endpoint nasal epithelium degeneration. By applying an interspecies factor of 1, a factor of 10 for interindividual variability and a factor of 2 to account for the higher respiratory rate of children compared to adults, a health hazard guide value (RW II) of 6 mg ethyl acetate/m(3) is obtained. A health precaution guide value (RW I) of 0.6 mg ethyl acetate/m(3) indoor air is recommended.

Abstract
Disability adjusted life year (DALY) has been widely used since 1990s for evaluating global and/or regional burden of diseases. As many environmental pollutants are hazardous to human health, DALY is also recognized as an indicator to quantify the health impact of environmental pollution related to disease burden. Based on literature reviews, this article aims to give an overview of the applicable methodologies and research directions for using DALY as a tool for quantitative assessment of environmental pollution. With an introduction of the methodological framework of DALY, the requirements on data collection and manipulation for quantifying disease burdens are summarized. Regarding environmental pollutants hazardous to human beings, health effect/risk evaluation is indispensable for transforming pollution data into disease data through exposure and dose-response analyses which need careful selection of models and determination of parameters. Following the methodological discussions, real cases are analyzed with attention paid to chemical pollutants and pathogens usually encountered in environmental pollution. It can be seen from existing studies that DALY is advantageous over conventional environmental impact assessment for quantification and comparison of the risks resulted from environmental pollution. However, further studies are still required to standardize the methods of health effect evaluation regarding varied pollutants under varied circumstances before DALY calculation.

Abstract
There is a need of guidance on how local irritancy data should be incorporated into risk assessment procedures, particularly with respect to the derivation of occupational exposure limits (OELs). Therefore, a board of experts from German committees in charge of the derivation of OELs discussed the major challenges of this particular end point for regulatory toxicology. As a result, this overview deals with the question of integrating results of local toxicity at the eyes and the upper respiratory tract (URT). Part 1 describes the morphology and physiology of the relevant target sites, i.e., the outer eye, nasal cavity, and larynx/pharynx in humans. Special emphasis is placed on sensory innervation, species differences between humans and rodents, and possible effects of obnoxious odor in humans. Based on this physiological basis, Part 2 describes a conceptual model for the causation of adverse health effects at these targets that is composed of two pathways. The first, “sensory irritation” pathway is initiated by the interaction of local irritants with receptors of the nervous system (e.g., trigeminal nerve endings) and a downstream cascade of reflexes and defense mechanisms (e.g., eyeblinks, coughing). While the first stages of this pathway are thought to be completely reversible, high or prolonged exposure can lead to neurogenic inflammation and subsequently tissue damage. The second, “tissue irritation” pathway starts with the interaction of the local irritant with the epithelial cell layers of the eyes and the URT. Adaptive changes are the first response on that pathway followed by inflammation and irreversible damages. Regardless of these initial steps, at high concentrations and prolonged exposures, the two pathways converge to the adverse effect of morphologically and biochemically ascertainable changes. Experimental exposure studies with human volunteers provide the empirical basis for effects along the sensory irritation pathway and thus, “sensory NOAEChuman” can be derived. In contrast, inhalation studies with rodents investigate the second pathway that yields an “irritative NOAECanimal.” Usually the data for both pathways is not available and extrapolation across species is necessary. Part 3 comprises an empirical approach for the derivation of a default factor for interspecies differences. Therefore, from those substances under discussion in German scientific and regulatory bodies, 19 substances were identified known to be human irritants with available human and animal data. The evaluation started with three substances: ethyl acrylate, formaldehyde, and methyl methacrylate. For these substances, appropriate chronic animal and a controlled human exposure studies were available. The comparison of the sensory NOAEChuman with the irritative NOAECanimal (chronic) resulted in an interspecies extrapolation factor (iEF) of 3 for extrapolating animal data concerning local sensory irritating effects. The adequacy of this iEF was confirmed by its application to additional substances with lower data density (acetaldehyde, ammonia, n-butyl acetate, hydrogen sulfide, and 2-ethylhexanol). Thus, extrapolating from animal studies, an iEF of 3 should be applied for local sensory irritants without reliable human data, unless individual data argue for a substance-specific approach.

Abstract
The German Ad Hoc Working Group on Indoor Guidelines of the Indoor Air Hygiene Committee and the States' Supreme Health Authorities is issuing indoor air guide values to protect public health. No human studies of sufficient quality are available for the evaluation of 1-butanol in indoor air. In a well-documented oral study on reproduction toxicity in rats, assessed as reliable, impairment of embryo development was observed. Benchmark modeling of the study data by US-EPA revealed a BMDL10 of 26.1 mg/kg b.w. per day. The working group used this BMDL10 as the point of departure for the derivation of the guide value II. Considering a human respiration rate of 20 m(3) per day and a human body weight of 70 kg, this dose was converted into an inhalative concentration. Applying a factor of 0.6 to account for the inhalative absorption rate, an allometric extrapolation factor from rat to human (factor 4), an interspecies factor of 2.5 for toxicodynamics, and a factor of 10 to account for individual differences (intraspecies factor), results in a health hazard guide value (RW II) of 2 mg 1-butanol/m(3). The benchmark dose calculation of the same study generated a BMDL05 of 12.4 mg/kg b.w. per day. Applying the same assessment factors as for RW II, a precautionary guide value (RW I) of 0.7 mg 1-butanol/m(3) indoor air is calculated.

Abstract
Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an industrial chemical, used as a paint and adhesive solvent, with the potential for significant increases in production. Using select immune function assays, the purpose of these studies was to evaluate the immunotoxicity of DMC following dermal exposure using a murine model. Following a 28-day exposure, DMC produced a significant decrease in thymus weight at concentrations of 75% and greater. No effects on body weight, hematological parameters (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and their differentials), or immune cell phenotyping (B-cells, T-cells, and T-cell sub-sets) were identified. The IgM antibody response to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) was significantly reduced in the spleen but not the serum. DMC was not identified to be an irritant and evaluation of the sensitization potential, conducted using the local lymph node assay (LLNA) at concentrations ranging from 50-100%, did not identify increases in lymphocyte proliferation. These results demonstrate that dermal exposure to DMC induces immune suppression in a murine model and raise concern about potential human exposure and the need for occupational exposure regulations.

Abstract
A combination of batch and column experiments evaluated the mass transfer of two candidate partitioning electron donors (PEDs), n-hexanol (nHex) and n-butyl acetate (nBA), for enhanced bioremediation of trichloroethene (TCE)-dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). Completely mixed batch reactor experiments yielded equilibrium TCE-DNAPL and water partition coefficients (KNW) for nHex and nBA of 21.7 ± 0.27 and 330.43 ± 6.7, respectively, over a range of initial PED concentrations up to the aqueous solubility limit of ca. 5000 mg/L. First-order liquid-liquid mass transfer rates determined in batch reactors with nBA or nHex concentrations near the aqueous solubility were 0.22 min(-1) and 0.11 min(-1), respectively. Liquid-liquid mass transfer under dynamic flow conditions was assessed in one-dimensional (1-D) abiotic columns packed with Federal Fine Ottawa sand containing a uniform distribution of residual TCE-DNAPL. Following pulse injection of PED solutions at pore-water velocities (vp) ranging from 1.2 to 6.0 m/day, effluent concentration measurements demonstrated that both nHex and nBA partitioned strongly into residual TCE-DNAPL with maximum effluent levels not exceeding 35% and 7%, respectively, of the applied concentrations of 4000 to 5000 mg/L. PEDs persisted at effluent concentrations above 5 mg/L for up to 16 and 80 pore volumes for nHex and nBA, respectively. Mathematical simulations yielded KNW values ranging from 44.7 to 48.2 and 247 to 291 and liquid-liquid mass transfer rates of 0.01 to 0.03 min(-1) and 0.001 to 0.006 min(-1) for nHex and nBA, respectively. The observed TCE-DNAPL and water mass transfer behavior suggests that a single PED injection can persist in a treated source zone for prolonged time periods, thereby reducing the need for, or frequency of, repeated electron donor injections to support bacteria that derive reducing equivalents for TCE reductive dechlorination from PED fermentation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify and quantify airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) inside neonatal incubators during various modes of operation within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment. STUDY DESIGN Air samples were taken from 10 unoccupied incubators in four operational settings along with ambient air samples using air sampling canisters. The samples were analyzed following EPA TO-15 using a Tekmar AutoCan interfaced to Agilent 6890 Gas Chromatograph with a 5973 Mass Spectrometer calibrated for 60 EPA TO-15 method target compounds. Non-target compounds were tentatively identified using mass spectral interpretation and with a mass spectral library created by National Institute for Standards and Technology. RESULT Two non-target compounds, 2-heptanone and n-butyl acetate, were found at elevated concentrations inside the incubators compared with ambient room air samples. Increase in temperature and addition of humidity produced further increased concentrations of these compounds. Their identities were verified by mass spectra and relative retention times using authentic standards. They were quantified using vinyl acetate and 2-hexanone as surrogate standards. CONCLUSION The emission pattern of these two compounds and background measurements indicate that they originate inside the incubator. There is evidence that exposure to some VOCs may adversely impact the fetal and developing infants' health. Currently, as there is no definitive information available on the effects of acute or chronic low-level exposure to these compounds in neonates, future studies evaluating the health effects of neonatal exposure to these VOCs are needed.

Abstract
First, the developmental toxic potential of n-butyl acetate (BA) was examined in Sprague-Dawley rats following whole body inhalation exposure, 6 h day(-1), from day 6 to 20 of gestation, at concentrations of 0, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm. Maternal toxicity was evidenced by significant decreases in body weight gain at 2000 and 3000 ppm, and by reduced food consumption at 1000 ppm and higher concentrations. The effects on prenatal development were limited to a significant decrease in fetal weight at 3000 ppm. Thus, inhaled BA was not a selective developmental toxicant. In the second part of this study, the developmental toxic effects of simultaneous exposures to ethylbenzene (EB) and BA, or to toluene (TOL) and BA were evaluated. Pregnant rats were administered EB (0, 250 or 1000 ppm) and BA (0, 500 or 1500 ppm), or TOL (0, 500 or 1500 ppm) and BA (0, 500, 1500 ppm), separately and in combinations, using a 2 x 2 factorial design. The maternal weight gain was reduced after exposure to 1000 ppm EB, to 1500 ppm BA, or to 1500 ppm TOL, either alone or in binary combinations. A significant reduction of fetal weight was associated with exposure to 1000 ppm EB alone, to either mixtures of EB with BA, or to 1500 ppm TOL alone or combined with BA at either concentration. No embryolethal or teratogenic effects were observed whatever the exposure. There was no evidence of interaction between EB and BA or between TOL and BA in causing maternal or developmental effects.

Abstract
Olfactory loss can occur through accidental exposure, poor industrial hygiene, or exposure to low levels of toxins in the ambient air over long periods. This loss can lead to transient olfactory disorders, irreversible anosmia, temporary olfactory fatigue, or industrial anosmia. Inevitably, a practicing otolaryngologist will encounter a patient with complaints of decreased smell and taste that initially may be difficult to diagnose and treat. Much of the challenge in evaluating a patient with disturbances of olfaction is in obtaining adequate quantitative measurements of sensory dysfunction and identifying a source for the olfactory loss. Although there is no particular test for environmental toxins as a source of olfactory loss, an accurate cause can be determined by obtaining a careful, detailed history. A significant exposure history and lack of more common causes of olfactory loss strengthens an argument for environmental toxins as an etiology. Unfortunately, no available treatments can reverse permanent damage caused by toxic exposure, but removal from the source of toxins may allow for repair of the olfactory system and return of normal function, especially in acute exposures. Despite the increasing number of studies investigating toxic exposure on olfactory function, these effects are understood poorly. With continued study of human exposure to these substances and the use of animal models, the mechanisms by which damage occurs will be understood better and new approaches for diagnosis and treatment will be developed. Furthermore, with increasing regulations of occupational environments and stricter policies on industrial air pollution, olfactory dysfunction secondary to toxicity should become less prevalent.

Abstract
The metabolic series approach for risk assessment uses a dosimetry-based analysis to develop toxicity information for a group of metabolically linked compounds using pharmacokinetic (PK) data for each compound and toxicity data for the parent compound. The metabolic series approach for n-butyl acetate and its subsequent metabolites, n-butanol and n-butyric acid (the butyl series), was first demonstrated using a provisional physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for the butyl series. The objective of this work was to complete development of the PBPK model for the butyl series. Rats were administered test compounds by iv bolus dose, iv infusion, or by inhalation in a recirculating closed chamber. Hepatic, vascular, and extravascular metabolic constants for metabolism were estimated by fitting the model to the blood time course data from these experiments. The respiratory bioavailability of n-butyl acetate (100% of alveolar ventilation) and n-butanol (50% of alveolar ventilation) was estimated from closed chamber inhalation studies and measured ventilation rates. The resulting butyl series PBPK model successfully reproduces the blood time course of these compounds following iv administration and inhalation exposure to n-butyl acetate and n-butanol in rats and arterial blood n-butanol kinetics following inhalation exposure to n-butanol in humans. These validated inhalation route models can be used to support species and dose-route extrapolations required for risk assessment of butyl series family of compounds. Human equivalent concentrations of 169 ppm and 1066 ppm n-butanol corresponding to the rat n-butyl acetate NOAELs of 500 and 3000 ppm were derived using the models.
