Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth wear (TW) prevalence is high and increasing and has important consequences on the patient's quality of life. Knowledge of risk factors is crucial to promote diagnosis, prevention strategies and timely interceptive treatment. Many studies have identified TW risk factors. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to map and describe suspected available factors associated with TW in permanent dentition based on quantitative measurement. METHODS The scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension of the Scoping Reviews checklist. The search was conducted in October 2022 from the Medline® (PubMed® interface) and Scopus® databases. Two independent reviewers selected and characterised the studies. RESULTS 2702 articles were identified for assessment of titles and abstracts, and 273 articles were included in the review. The results show a need to standardise TW measurement indices and the study design. The included studies highlighted various factors, classified into nine domains: sociodemographic factors, medical history, drinking habits, eating habits, oral hygiene habits, dental factors, bruxism and temporomandibular disorders, behavioural factors, and stress. Results related to chemical TW (erosion) risk factors underline the importance of eating disorders, gastroesophageal reflux and lifestyle, particularly drinking and eating behaviours, which supports developing public health information campaigns and interventions. Besides chemical, this review identifies evidence of several mechanical TW risk factors, such as toothbrushing and bruxism; the influence of this last factor needs to be further explored. CONCLUSIONS TW management and prevention require a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists are in the first line to detect associated diseases such as reflux or eating disorders. Consequently, practitioners' information and guideline diffusion should be promoted, and a TW risk factors checklist (the ToWeR checklist) is proposed to help diagnostic approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental erosion is a disease of the oral cavity where acids cause a loss of tooth enamel and is defined as having no bacterial involvement. The tooth surface is protected from acid attack by salivary proteins that make up the acquired enamel pellicle (AEP). Bacteria have been shown to readily degrade salivary proteins, and some of which are present in the AEP. This study aimed to explore the role of bacteria in dental erosion using a multi-omics approach by comparing saliva collected from participants with dental erosion and healthy controls. RESULTS Salivary proteomics was assessed by liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and demonstrated two altered AEP proteins in erosion, prolactin inducible protein (PIP), and zinc-alpha-2 glycoprotein (ZAG). Immunoblotting further suggested that degradation of PIP and ZAG is associated with erosion. Salivary microbiome analysis was performed by sequencing the bacterial 16S rRNA gene (V1-V2 region, Illumina) and showed that participants with dental erosion had a significantly (p < 0.05) less diverse microbiome than healthy controls (observed and Shannon diversity). Sequencing of bacterial mRNA for gene expression (Illumina sequencing) demonstrated that genes over-expressed in saliva from erosion participants included H + proton transporter genes, and three protease genes (msrAB, vanY, and ppdC). Salivary metabolomics was assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR). Metabolite concentrations correlated with gene expression, demonstrating that the dental erosion group had strong correlations between metabolites associated with protein degradation and amino acid fermentation. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that microbial proteolysis of salivary proteins found in the protective acquired enamel pellicle strongly correlates with dental erosion, and we propose four novel microbial genes implicated in this process. Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate salivary remineralisation versus chemical remineralisation/infiltration of enamel, using different dentistry materials. The enamel changes were studied using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and the depth of lesions and demineralisation/remineralisation/infiltration percentage were calculated. Additionally, the macro elemental composition of the teeth was performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two studies were performed: (i) demineralisation of enamel in 3% citric acid and infiltration treatment with infiltration resin (Icon, DMG), remineralisation with Fluor Protector (Ivoclar Vivadent) and artificial saliva pH 8; and (ii) enamel demineralisation in saliva at pH 3 and remineralisation at salivary pH 8. The results showed that, firstly, for the remineralisation of demineralised enamel samples, Fluor Protector (Ivoclar Vivadent) was very effective for medium demineralised lesions followed by saliva remineralisation. In cases of deep demineralisation lesions where fluoride could not penetrate, low viscosity resin (Icon, DMG, Hamburg) effectively infiltrated to stop the demineralisation process. Secondly, remineralisation in salivary conditions needed supplementary study over a longer period, to analyse the habits, diet and nutrition of patients in detail. Finally, demineralisation/remineralisation processes were found to influence the macro elemental composition of enamel demineralisation, with natural saliva proving to be less aggressive in terms of decreasing Ca and Mg content.

Abstract
Purpose This investigation aimed to compare the protective role of saliva against erosion and attrition challenges. Method Polished enamel and dentine samples (n = 160) were prepared and randomly assigned to either the saliva or saliva-free group (n = 40 enamel and n = 40 dentine/group). Within each subgroup, they were allocated to four subgroups: negative control (deionized water exposure 10 min), erosion (0.3% citric acid 10 min), attrition (120 S of 300 g force), or combined erosion/attrition (0.3% citric acid 10 min then 120 S of 300 g force). Experimental cycles were repeated three times. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. Results The mean and standard deviation (SD) of step heights produced by the attrition and erosion/attrition groups in enamel in the saliva-free group were 5.6 µm (2.4) and 13.4 µm (2.8), respectively, while they were 2.4 µm (3.8) and 12.9 µm (3.5) in the saliva group, with no significant difference between the saliva and saliva-free groups. For dentine, the corresponding step heights were 25.2 µm (5.5) and 35.9 µm (7.9) for the saliva-free group, but 21.8 µm (5.3) and 27.3 µm (6.4) for the saliva group (p < 0.001). Conclusion There was a trend that saliva decreased wear, but this was only statistically significant for erosion/attrition dentine wear.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of slurry abrasive levels and acidic challenges on the development of non-carious cervical lesions. METHODS Ninety-six extracted upper premolars were affixed in pairs to acrylic blocks and had their root surfaces covered by acrylic resin except for 2 mm from the cemento-enamel junction. The specimens were distributed into six groups (n = 8 pairs) based on two experimental factors: (1) slurry abrasivity level [low/medium/high] and (2) citric acid challenge [yes/no]. Specimens were brushed for 5,000, 15,000, 35,000, and 65,000 strokes. Volume loss (VL) was determined based on optical profilometry scans of specimens impressions at the baseline and at subsequent brushing levels. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni pairwise comparison (α = 0.05). RESULTS Higher VL values were associated with high-abrasivity slurries relative to low- and medium-abrasivity slurries (P < 0.001). Increasing the slurry abrasivity level increased the VL regardless of the acidic challenge, which did not have a significant effect (P = 0.184). After 65,000 strokes, significant VL was recorded in all groups relative to preceding brushing levels (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher values of time-dependent surface loss were associated with increased dentifrice slurry abrasivity, regardless of the citric acid challenge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate variations in the interaction between enamel, that is, the acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) and citric or hydrochloric acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 24-h AEP was formed on natural enamel specimens (n = 40) from pooled whole mouth human saliva. Samples were randomly allocated to citric (0.3%, pH 3.2) or hydrochloric (HCl) acid (0.01 M, pH 2.38) exposure for 30 or 300 s. The total protein concentration (TPC), and phosphorous and calcium concentrations of the pellicle were determined before and after acid exposure, and again after re-immersion in saliva. Surface roughness and tandem scanning confocal microscopy imaging were used to assess enamel changes. RESULTS After 300 s of citric acid exposure, the mean ± SD TPC reduced from 5.1 ± 1.1 to 3.5 ± 1.1 mg/mL (p < 0.05). In contrast, after 300 s of HCl exposure, the mean TPC did not reduce significantly from baseline (6.6 ± 1.1 to 5.7 ± 0.7 mg/mL) but was significantly reduced in the reformed pellicle to 4.9 ± 1.2 mg/mL (p < 0.001). This reduction occurred after significant release of calcium and phosphorous from the enamel surface (p < 0.001). Thirty seconds of exposure to either acid had no obvious effect on the AEP. The surface roughness of the enamel decreased after acid exposure but no differences between groups was observed. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that citric acid interacted with proteins in the AEP upon contact, offering enamel protection. In contrast, HCl appeared to bypass the pellicle, and reduced protein was observed only after changes in the enamel chemical composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An oral condition that has largely been ignored in the Down syndrome population is pathological tooth wear. This study is aimed to create more awareness of the reasons underlying the tooth wear observed in patients with Down syndrome and to suggest different methods to prevent this condition. This research also potentially serves as a platform for future researchers to perform an in-depth analysis of the factors we identified. The aim of this study was to determine if children with Down syndrome are more prone to tooth wear than children who do not have Down syndrome. METHODS Our sample consisted of 120 children with Down syndrome who were compared with 120 children with no disabilities. The parents or guardians were asked to complete a questionnaire and a 3-day diet chart, while the wear on each tooth was recorded using the standardised Simplified Smith and Knight Tooth Wear Index. RESULTS Children with Down syndrome experience tooth wear more frequently than non-Down syndrome children. A history of asthma, mouth breathing and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease as well as the intake of acidic diet and drinks has exerted significant effects on the prevalence of tooth wear. CONCLUSIONS The early diagnosis and analysis of the underlying aetiology are important for the management of tooth wear in children with Down syndrome who have shown a greater tendency to develop erosive lesions.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to analyze the acidogenic potential of the various commercially available fruit juices and to evaluate the salivary and plaque pH changes before and after consumption of the fruit juices that were kept at various temperatures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Baseline plaque and salivary pH were measured for 30 volunteers, and the test was conducted for 4 consecutive days on which juices with a known pH was consumed, which were kept at varying temperatures. The resulting changes in the plaque and salivary pH were measured after 1, 5, 15, and 30 minutes of the consumption of the fruit juices using a portable standard digital pH meter. RESULTS Among the three juices compared, grape juice was found to be more acidic compared to the orange juice and pineapple juice. The pH fall was maximum after consumption of grape juice followed by orange and pineapple juice, respectively. The consumption of ice candy caused a greater fall in pH followed by the refrigerated juice and the juices that were kept at room temperature, respectively. CONCLUSION Parents are unaware of the harmful effects of endogenous acids in the fruit juices and their effect on the teeth. We, as primary dental care providers, should take initiatives to provide adequate knowledge and information regarding this new trend of consuming frozen fruit juices and must strongly discourage this form of consumption as a frequent habit. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Though many presume that the readily available fruit juices are healthy, frequent consumption of these fruit juices causes acid dissolution of enamel as most of these juices have a pH below the critical level. Hence the present study was conducted to evaluate the erosive potential of the various commercial fruit juices. Abstract
Objectives The objective of this in vitro study was to assess the surface hardness through Vickers hardness (VH) test of one conventional hybrid resin composites (Filtek Z350), compared with that of two bulk cure resin composites (SDR™, Tetric N Ceram®). Materials and methods Twenty specimens of each material were prepared in cylindrical aluminum molds with an internal diameter of 5 mm and depth of 4 mm, 10 (incremental curing) and 10 (bulk curing). The surface of each specimen was covered with a transparent plastic matrix strip before light curing with conventional visible light for 40 seconds. The specimens thus obtained were stored in deionized water and transferred to an incubator at 37°C for 24 hours to simulate clinical conditions. After 24 hours, the microhardness of each specimen was measured using a Vickers indenter, with a load of 100 gm and dwell time of 15 seconds (HV 0.2/40). The specimens were further subjected to VH test in an interval of 7, 30, and 90 days. The data were subjected to statistical analysis—Student’s t test, analysis of variance, and post hoc Tukey’s test. Results The present study showed that SDR™ in bulk curing showed consistently greater value of hardness and was comparable to traditional incremental cured Filtek Z350, highlighting the advantages of the new SDR technology. Abstract
Introduction Dissolution of the enamel in the form of erosion has increased due to shift in eating habits toward carbonated drinks like soft drink and chocolates. Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the salivary pH after intake of different eatables and beverages in children at different time intervals. Study design Using standard salivary tests, this study was conducted as a case-control study. Fifty children between ages of 8 and 12 years having strict vegetarian diet were included in the study. Materials and methods Oral prophylaxis was done and salivary buffer capacity for stimulated saliva was measured. Before the saliva collection, each of the children was informed not to eat or drink anything for up to 2 hours just before the appointment. Results On pairwise evaluation, all the differences were found to be significant statistically except between baseline vs 30 minutes. Maximum mean difference was calculated and observed between baseline and immediately after intake of fruit juice and immediate after 30 minutes, 0.953 and 0.963 respectively, while minimum difference was calculated and observed between baseline and 30 minutes after intake of fruit juice (0.010). Conclusion Maximum drop was seen in cold drink when compared with fruit juice. The maximum pH increase was observed in cream biscuits with 7.63 ± 0.20. Abstract
There is a perceived gap between dietary advice given by health practitioners and adherence to the advice by patients. We investigated whether a behaviour change technique (implementation-planning) was more effective than standard-of-care diet advice at reducing dietary acid intake using quantitative erosive tooth wear progression as an objective clinical outcome. This study was a randomised controlled, double-blind, single-centre clinical trial in the UK. Participants (n = 60) with high dietary acid intake (≥2 daily), were recruited and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either implementation-planning or standard-of-care diet advice in a single clinical session. Questionnaires and impressions were taken at baseline and 6 months later. Dental casts were scanned using laser profilometry and superimposed using surface-matching software. Data were analysed per protocol and intention-to-treat using independent t-tests and Mann-Whitney tests. The intervention group reduced their dietary acid intake between meals to 1 intake per day compared to 2 intakes per day for the controls and demonstrated reduced dental hard tissue volume loss (-0.00 mm3 (SD = 0.01)) compared to controls (-0.07 mm3 (SD 0.17)), p = 0.049. This paper supports the use of implementation planning in clinical practice and presents a non-invasive method of intervention assessment in behaviour change. Larger trials are needed to confirm the generalisability of results.

Abstract
AIM The study was aimed to estimate the pH of the commonly available soft drinks in the Indian market and to assess the detrimental effects of the juices and beverages on the tooth surface by measuring the weight loss of the tooth sample. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was done with eight different types of commercially available carbonated drink and fruit juices available in the Indian market among which six were carbonated drinks and two were juices. Carbonated drinks experimented were Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Fanta, Mirinda, 7Up and Sprite, and two fruit juices were Tropicana orange juice and real orange juice. Ten different bottles from each category were obtained, and the pH was estimated. Each of the beverages was divided into batch of 10 containers containing the tooth sample. Weight of all samples was measured at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours with subsequently changing each solution at an interval of 24 hours. RESULTS The mean pH of the beverages was found ranging from 2.13 ± 0.02 in Pepsi to 3.41 ± 0.02 in Tropicana on opening. The mean pH of water was found to be 6.98 ± 0.01. Among carbonated drinks, the mean weight loss after 24 hours was highest in Coca-Cola and least in 7Up. Tropicana fruit juice had a higher tooth loss than real orange juices. When compared with water, the tooth loss was significantly higher in Coca-Cola after all specified time (hours). CONCLUSION The pH of both carbonated drinks and fruit juices was below the critical pH. The weight loss was also seen after every 24 hours in all the carbonated drinks and beverages. The study showed that these commercial beverages are harmful to the tooth structures, and hence, the health professionals play a major role in educating the population about its effects and advising them to use these products precisely. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The change in lifestyle has increased the demand of soft drinks and artificial juice in Indian market. The use of these carbonated drinks and fruit juices causes damage to the tooth structure in all ages, especially in young mass. Our study provides an idea about the deleterious effects of these commercial drinks on dental hard tissues.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate factors associated with the incidence of erosive tooth wear (ETW) among adults at different ages in Tokyo using multifactorial logistic regression analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sample consisted of a total of 1108 subjects aged 15 to 89 years in Tokyo, Japan. Two examiners evaluated ETW in a full-mouth recording. The subjects were asked to complete a self-administered daily diet, habit, and health condition questionnaire. Subjects who had frequent acid consumption or gastric reflux and at least one tooth with initial enamel wear were placed in the ETW-positive group, and the remainder of the subjects was placed in the ETW-negative group. Logistic regression analyses were carried out to identify factors collectively associated with ETW. RESULTS Logistic regression analysis showed that greater frequencies of carbonated or sports drink consumption were associated with higher incidence of ETW for all age groups except for 70-89 years. Adults in the 30-39-year group who reported suffering from heartburn were about 22.3 times more likely to develop ETW, while 40-49-year adults who had repeated vomiting were about 33.5 times more likely to exhibit ETW compared with those who did not experience vomiting. CONCLUSION Age-specific dietary habits were clearly observed among adults at different ages in Tokyo, and there were significant differences in intrinsic and extrinsic factors between ETW-positive and ETW-negative groups for each age group. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Both greater frequency of carbonated and sports drink consumption were associated with higher incidence of ETW among adults at different ages in Tokyo.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology of tooth wear in Beijing and to establish appropriate preventive measures. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analysis involved a questionnaire survey conducted for 1,812 individuals aged 12–74 years in Beijing. Subjects were local residents living in the region for >6 months before the survey. Subjects were evaluated using clinical examinations with the basic erosive wear examination index and a self-administered questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results: The prevalence of maxillary tooth wear was 84.9% for the molars, 68.9% for the premolars, 74.1% for the canines and 97% for the incisors. In the mandible, the corresponding prevalence rates were 85.2%, 59.3%, 78.6% and 97.4%, respectively. The occlusal, incisal and cervical surfaces showed more frequent wear compared with the other surfaces. Age, acidic beverages, xerostomia and brushing habits were identified as risk factors for tooth wear (P<0.05). Conclusions: Tooth wear is common in Beijing. Specific preventive measures should be recommended for individuals reporting excessive consumption of fruits and/or acidic beverages, and those with xerostomia. In particular, incisor wear should be carefully monitored in individuals of all age groups.

Abstract
Sports and energy drinks are consumed by more people than ever. Sports and energy drinks may enhance physical resistance, stimulate metabolism, prevent rehydration and replace electrolytes during high activity efforts. However, these drinks often have a low pH and are acidic, which can erode enamel and dentin, and increase dentine hypersensitivity. In addition to the adverse effects of sports and energy drinks on tooth structures, they often have the potential to damage restorative materials. These drinks often contain artificial colors which have potential to discolor resin composite materials and glass ionomers. The acidic nature of these drinks could also lead to a degradation, increase in wear, and roughening of the surface of the restorative materials. Many of the negative consequences of sport and energy drinks can be related to their over-consumption among children and teenagers. Patients should be advised to have a healthy diet, and consume soft and energy drinks in moderation, to avoid any negative dental or health consequences. The over-consumption of sports and energy drinks which are high in sugar and have the lowest pH are most likely to cause avoidable dental problems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the progression of dental erosion in 13-14 year-olds after 4 years, and its association with lifestyle and oral health. METHODS 227 randomly selected 13-14 year-olds from a Public Dental Clinic, Örebro, Sweden, were investigated. A clinical examination was performed which included dental caries/gingival/plaque status, as well as grading of dental erosion at the tooth surface and participant levels in "marker teeth", including buccal/palatal surfaces of 6 maxillary anterior teeth (13-23), and occlusal surfaces of first molars. An interview and a questionnaire regarding drinking habits and other lifestyle factors were completed. All investigations were repeated at follow-up. The participants were divided into high and low progression erosion groups and logistic regression statistics were applied. RESULTS 175 individuals participated at follow-up. Progression occurred in 35% of the 2566 tooth surfaces. 32% of the surfaces had deteriorated by one severity grade (n=51 individuals) and 3% by two grades (n=2 individuals). Boys showed more severe erosion than girls at the follow-up. Among the variables predicting greater progression, a lower severity of erosive wear at baseline had the highest OR (13.3), followed in descending order by a "retaining" drinking technique, more frequent intake of drinks between meals, low GBI and lesser sour milk intake, with reference to the baseline recording. Using these five variables, sensitivity and specificity were 87% and 67% respectively, for predicting progression of erosion. CONCLUSIONS Progression of erosive lesions in Swedish adolescents aged 13-14 years followed up to age 17-18 years was common and related to certain lifestyle factors. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE In permanent teeth, dental erosion may develop early in life and its progression is common. Dental health workers should be made aware of this fact and regular screenings for erosion and recording of associated lifestyle factors should be performed.

Abstract
Introduction. Diet is a major aetiological factor for dental caries and enamel erosion. This study was undertaken with the aim of assessing the effect of selected locally available beverages on salivary pH, flow rate, and oral clearance rate amongst adults. Materials and Method. This clinical trial comprised 120 subjects. Test beverages undertaken were pepsi, fruit drink, coffee, and sweetened milk. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 17. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and post hoc Tukey's test were applied in the statistical tests. Results. It was found that salivary pH decreased for all the beverages immediately after consumption and the salivary flow rate increased after their consumption. The oral clearance rate of sweetened milk was found to be the least at 6.5 minutes and that of pepsi was found to be 13 minutes. However, the oral clearance rates of fruit drink and coffee were found to be equal at 15 minutes. Conclusion. Although it was found out that liquids cleared rapidly from the oral cavity, they had a significant cariogenic and erosive potential. Hence, it is always advised to minimise the consumption of beverages, especially amongst children and young adults to maintain a good oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth wear has been investigated in numerous countries, and the prevalence has varied. However, the data on tooth wear in China are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of tooth wear and to investigate the relative indicators associated with tooth wear in 12- and 15-year-old adolescents in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, Central China. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study was undertaken among 720 adolescents in Hubei Province, Central China. The age groups in this study were 12- and 15-year-old, and each group consisted of 360 participants in which females and males represented 50 % each. A modified version of the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) tooth wear index was used for the buccal, cervical, occlusal/incisal and lingual surfaces of all of the teeth in the 720 adolescents. All of the participants were asked to answer a questionnaire consisting of questions about their current and historical dietary habits and oral hygiene. RESULTS The prevalence of tooth wear was 18.6 and 89.4 % in 12- and 15-year-old adolescents, respectively. The prevalence rates of dentin exposure were 1.9 and 5.6 %, respectively. A significantly higher prevalence of tooth wear and dentin exposure in 15-year-old adolescents was found than in 12-year-old adolescents (p < 0.001 and p = 0.011). Several factors such as drinking soft drinks and fruit juices immediately after sports, taking aspirin, reflux, unilateral chewing, tooth brushing once daily or less often, duration of brushing less than 2 min and swimming in the summer were found to be associated with tooth wear. CONCLUSIONS Tooth wear in 12- and 15-year-old adolescents in Central China is a significant problem and should receive greater attention. The prevalence of tooth wear increases with age and associated with socio-behavioral risk factors.

Abstract
This cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the prevalence and severity of dental erosion and to determine the potential risk factors for dental erosion among 11- to 14-year-old school children in South India. The total sample size for the study was 605, of which 303 school children were from private schools and 302 from public schools. A questionnaire was designed to record information about socio-demographic characteristics, oral hygiene practices, dietary habits and risk factors for dental erosion. Chi square test, bivariate analysis and Logistic regression analysis were performed to analyse the data. The children who consumed lemon several times a day (OR = 13.41, P < 0.001), and those who preferred carbonated drinks (OR = 2.80, P = 0.007) had a higher tendency to develop dental erosion. The overall prevalence of dental erosion was found to be low (8.9%). Erosion was found to be greater in posterior teeth (65.6%) than anterior teeth (34.4%). Loss of enamel only with loss of surface contour was observed in most (94.8%) of the cases. The prevalence of dental erosion was found to be low in school children. Private school children were affected more by dental erosion. Frequency of lemon consumption and consumption of carbonated drinks were identified as risk factors.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between dental erosive wear and potential background, behavioural and dietary risk indicators and to assess whether there is a dose-response relationship between the level of acidic beverage consumption and dental erosive wear among adolescents. Of 846 adolescents (aged 16-18 years) scheduled for dental recall examinations, 795 (94%) accepted to participate. All participants completed a self-administered questionnaire regarding their background (gender and age), tooth-brushing frequency and dietary habits (the amount and frequency of acidic food and beverage consumption as well as the chosen method and manner of consuming acidic drinks). The association between the presence of erosive lesions and the possible risk indicators was assessed by logistic regression analyses. Of all participants examined, 37% had ≥3 surfaces with dental erosions and were considered to be affected individuals. In the present study, multivariate logistic analyses revealed a significant association between the dental erosive wear and high consumption of sour sweets and sports drinks. The tooth-brushing frequency was not significantly associated with dental erosive wear. Additionally, to the best of our knowledge, the results are the first to indicate a dose-response relationship between the daily consumption of acidic drinks and dental erosive wear.

Abstract
A review is presented of the mechanical damage suffered by tooth crowns. This has been the subject of much recent research, resulting in a need to revise some of the thinking about the mechanisms involved. Damage is classified here by scale into macro-, meso- and microfracture. The focus is on the outer enamel coat because this is the contact tissue and where most fractures start. Enamel properties appear to be tailored to maximize hardness, but also to prevent fracture. The latter is achieved by the deployment of developmental flaws called enamel tufts. Macrofractures usually appear to initiate as extensions of tufts on the undersurface of the enamel adjacent to the enamel-dentine junction and extend from there into the enamel. Cracks that pass from the tooth surface tend to be deflected by an enamel region of high toughness; if they find the surface again, a chip (mesofracture) is produced. The real protection of the enamel-dentine junction here is the layer of decussating inner enamel. Finally, a novel analysis of mechanical wear (microfracture) suggests that the local toughness of the enamel is very important to its ability to resist tissue loss. Enamel and dentine have contrasting behaviours. Seen on a large scale, dentine is isotropic (behaving similarly in all directions) while enamel is anisotropic, but vice versa on a very small scale. These patterns have implications for anyone studying the fracture behaviour of teeth.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of tooth wear in the aging population of northwest China and to investigate the factors associated with such tooth wear. Methods Cross-sectional analytic clinical and questionnaire study was performed in 704 participants who had a mean age of 46.5 ± 0.2 SD and of which 367(52.13%) were males and 337(47.87%) female. These participants were invited when they attended the hospital which located in northwest China for routine oral examination. Results In the maxilla of the examined patients, the rate of tooth wear varied from 85.51% for molar group, 89.77% for premolar group, 100.0% for canine group to 87.22% for incisor group. In the mandible, the rates were 86.36%, 88.92%, 100.0% and 91.19% for the four groups respectively. Moreover, both the incisor and canine groups of these patients showed median scores of 3, the premolar group showed a median score of 1, and the molar group had a median score of 2. Additionally, multiple factors were considered to contribute to these patterns of tooth wear, especially the habitual consumption of a hard or sour diet (P < 0.05,odds ratio 1.21, 95% confidence intervals 1.04-1.49). Conclusions Tooth wear is a common disease in which the anterior teeth exhibit greater wear than posterior teeth. The data support an association between tooth wear and dietary patterns.

Abstract
Context: Demineralization of tooth by erosion is caused by frequent contact between the tooth surface and acids present in soft drinks. Aim: The present study objective was to evaluate the remineralization potential of casein-phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel and iron supplement on dental erosion by soft drinks in human primary and permanent enamel using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Materials and Methods: Specimens were made from extracted 15 primary and 15 permanent teeth which were randomly divided into three treatment groups: CPP-ACP paste, APF gel and iron supplement. AFM was used for baseline readings followed by demineralization and remineralization cycle. Results and Statistics: Almost all group of samples showed remineralization that is a reduction in surface roughness which was higher with CPP-ACP paste. Statistical analysis was performed using by one-way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U-test with P < 0.05. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the application of CPP-ACP paste is effective on preventing dental erosion from soft drinks.

Abstract
The acquired pellicle adheres to tooth surfaces and has been suggested to provide differing degrees of protection against acidic erosion. This study investigated whether pellicle formed on enamel blocks in patients suffering dietary dental erosion modified the effect of an in vitro simulated dietary challenge, in comparison with pellicle formed on enamel blocks in healthy subjects and to no-pellicle enamel samples. Sixty subjects recruited from dental erosion clinics were compared to healthy age-matched controls. Subjects wore a custom-made maxillary splint holding human enamel blocks for 1 h during which the acquired enamel pellicle was formed. Enamel blocks were removed from the splints and a simulated dietary erosive challenge of 10 min was performed. In addition the challenge was performed on 30 enamel samples without pellicle. Profilometry showed no statistical difference between samples from the erosion subjects with a mean step height of 1.74 µm (SD 0.88) and median roughness (Sa) of 0.39 µm (interquartile range, IQR 0.3-0.56) and the controls with 1.34 µm (SD 0.66) and 0.33 µm (IQR 0.27-0.38), respectively. The control samples without pellicle had Sa of 0.44 µm (IQR 0.36-0.69) and these differences were statistically significant compared to those from the healthy subjects (p = 0.002). Mean (SD) microhardness reduction with a 100-gram load for the erosion group was 113.5 (10) KHN, for healthy subjects was 93 (15.4) KHN and for the enamel samples without pellicle 139.6 (21.8) KHN and all groups were statistically different. The microhardness and roughness data suggested the pellicle influenced erosion under these study conditions.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the remineralization potential of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on enamel eroded by cola drinks. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 30 healthy subjects were selected from a random sample of 1200 children and divided into two groups of 15 each wherein calcium and phosphorus analyses and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was carried out to investigate the remineralization of enamel surface. A total of 30 non-carious premolar teeth were selected from the human tooth bank (HTB) to prepare the in-situ appliance. Three enamel slabs were prepared from the same. One enamel slab was used to obtain baseline values and the other two were embedded into the upper palatal appliances prepared on the subjects' maxillary working model. The subjects wore the appliance after which 30 ml cola drink exposure was given. After 15 days, the slabs were removed and subjected to respective analysis. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Means of all the readings of soluble calcium and phosphorous levels at baseline,post cola-drink exposure and post cpp-acp application were subjected to statistical analysis SPSS11.5 version. Comparison within groups and between groups was carried out using ANOVA and F-values at 1% level of significance. RESULTS Decrease in calcium solubility of enamel in the CPP-ACP application group as compared to post-cola drink exposure group (P < 0.05) was seen. Distinctive change in surface topography of enamel in the post-CPP-ACP application group as compared to post-cola drink exposure group was observed. CONCLUSION CPP-ACP significantly promoted remineralization of enamel eroded by cola drinks as revealed by significant morphological changes seen in SEM magnification and spectrophotometric analyses.

Abstract
AIM To review the main psychological and mental conditions that are manifested dentally in the form of tooth wear. These conditions include depression, eating disorders, and alcohol and drug use disorders. The paper will also review the comorbidity of these conditions and the relevance of other medical conditions and lifestyle factors, such as gastroesophageal reflux disorder, smoking and diet, in the expression of tooth wear. CONCLUSION A holistic, multidisciplinary, healthcare approach is required in management of tooth wear patients with underlying mental health disorders. Dentists and Dental Care Professionals can have an important role in identifying these mental disorders through the observed tooth wear. They can also play a key role in monitoring patients' response and compliance to medical treatment through the monitoring of tooth wear progression and expression.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate risk indicators associated with dental erosive wear among 18-yr-old subjects in Oslo, Norway. Of 3,206 adolescents invited to participate in a screening examination for erosive wear, 1,456 were examined (giving a response rate of 45%). As part of the examination all participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. Associations between the presence of erosive lesions and the possible risk indicators were assessed by logistic regression analyses, taking into account the hierarchical relationships between the independent variables. Of all 18-yr-old subjects examined, 38% had at least one tooth with erosive lesions. Multivariate analyses showed significant associations between the presence of erosive wear and being male, brushing teeth once per day or less, episodes of vomiting, daily/weekly episodes of gastro-oesophageal reflux, consumption of fruit juice and sugary soft drinks several times per day, as well as consumption of sugary soft drinks daily to once per week. In conclusion, in addition to gender, dietary habits such as frequent consumption of fruit juice and sugary soft drinks, and the occurrence of reflux and vomiting, appear to be risk indicators for erosive wear. When counselling adolescents at risk, the gender-specific risk indicators should be taken into account.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of dental erosion and to investigate possible associations among dental erosion and medical history, dietary and lifestyle habits in a sample of adolescents in Greece. STUDY DESIGN The study sample consisted of 770 adolescents, 374 boys and 396 girls aged 13 to 16 years. All individuals were clinically examined and answered questions regarding their medical history, rate and frequency of drinks and food consumption and lifestyle habits. Statistical analysis of the questionnaire items was performed by using the multiple logistic regression analysis model. RESULTS Two hundreds and sixty adolescents were diagnosed as having dental erosion, giving a prevalence rate 33.8%. The habit of holding drinks in the mouth before swallowing [OR=2.85, 95% CI=1.45-5.58] (p=0.002), the ingestion of acidic drinks at bedtime [OR=0.24, 95% CI=0.11-0.53] (p=0.000), the consumption of car- bonated drinks [OR=3.99, 95% CI=1.37-11.59] (p=0.011) and fruit juices [OR=0.12, 95% CI=0.04-0.38] (p=0.000) were the most important associated factors of dental erosion. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of dental erosion in the study sample was 33.8% while dental erosion experience was associated with frequency and habits of consumption of some dietary components. Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental erosion is a multifactorial disease and is associated with dietary habits in infancy and adolescence. AIM To investigate possible associations among dental erosion and diet, medical history and lifestyle habits in Brazilian schoolchildren. DESIGN The sample consisted of a random single centre cluster of 414 adolescents (12- and 16-years old) of both genders from private and public schools in Bauru (Brazil). The O'Brien [Children's Dental Health in the United Kingdom, 1993 (1994) HMSO, London] index was used for dental erosion assessment. Data on medical history, rate and frequency of food and drinks consumption, and lifestyle habits were collected by a self-reported questionnaire. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the univariate relationships between variables. Analysis of questionnaire items was performed by multiple logistic regression analysis. The statistical significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS The erosion present group comprised 83 subjects and the erosion absent group 331. There were no statistically significant correlations among dental erosion and the consumption of food and drinks, medical history, or lifestyle habits. CONCLUSION The results indicate that there was no correlation between dental erosion and the risk factors analysed among adolescents in Bauru/Brazil and further investigations are necessary to clarify the multifactorial etiology of this condition.

Abstract
This paper presents a useful and convenient way to record the severity of tooth wear for patients seen in primary care. The index developed in collaboration with colleagues in Europe because there is widespread belief that tooth wear and in particular erosion is a growing issue for practitioners. The index is based on the BPE and uses similar protocols. It is designed to be simple to use, easily recorded in the notes, and gives practitioners the opportunity to record that the wear has been examined and considered. The four level index uses 0 (no wear), 1 (initial loss of surface texture), 2 (<50% loss of surface) and 3 (>50% loss of surface) to record the severity of wear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Saliva, tooth experiences and tooth position may be associated with dental erosion. To identify factors that may provide a potential protective effect against erosion, the authors compared salivary factors and behavioral aspects in participants in three age groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors evaluated 79 volunteer participants in three age groups: 16 through 20 years, 26 through 30 years and 46 through 50 years. They classified all teeth as having no erosion, having erosion involving only enamel or having erosion involving dentin on at least one surface. They collected saliva from each participant and determined pH, flow rate, buffering capacity, urea, total protein and volume required to neutralize orange juice. RESULTS Unstimulated salivary buffering capacity and urea concentration in salivary samples of participants aged 16 through 20 years with no erosion (facial/buccal surface) were significantly greater than those in the group with enamel erosion (P < .05). In participants aged 26 through 30 years (occlusal surface), the stimulated salivary flow rate was higher in the group with enamel erosion than in the group with dentin erosion (P < .05). In the group aged 46 through 50 years (lingual and palatal surfaces), only stimulated salivary total protein was significantly higher in the group with enamel erosion (P < .05). In groups aged 16 through 20 years and 46 through 50 years, erosion appeared to be related to a preference for sour (acidic) tastes (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Saliva protects enamel and dentin from erosion. Its effectiveness in this role depends partly on salivary factors and may differ according to a person's age and to the severity and site of erosion. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Salivary factors including flow rate, urea, buffering capacity and neutralization capability help prevent dental erosion. The protective level of saliva varies by age and tooth experiences.

Abstract
Acidic beverages are thought to increase the potential for dental erosion. We report pH and titratable acidities (ie, quantity of base required to bring a solution to neutral pH) of beverages popular in the United States and lesion depths in enamel and root surfaces after beverage exposure, and we describe associations among pH, titratable acidity, and both enamel and root erosive lesion depths. The pH of 100% juices, regular sodas, diet sodas, and sports drinks upon opening and the titratable acidity both upon opening and after 60 minutes of stirring were measured. Enamel and root surfaces of healthy permanent molars and premolars were exposed to individual beverages (4 enamel and 4 root surfaces per beverage) for 25 hours, and erosion was measured. Statistical analyses included 2-sample t tests, analyses of variance with post hoc Tukey studentized range test; and Spearman rank correlation coefficients. All beverages were acidic; the titratable acidity of energy drinks was greater than that of regular and diet sodas that were greater than that of 100% juices and sports drinks (P < .05). Enamel lesion depths after beverage exposures were greatest for Gatorade, followed by those for Red Bull and Coke that were greater than those for Diet Coke and 100% apple juice (P < .05). Root lesion depths were greatest for Gatorade, followed by Red Bull, Coke, 100% apple juice, and Diet Coke (P < .05). Lesion depths were not associated with pH or titratable acidity. Beverages popular in the United States can produce dental erosion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The regular consumption of acidic foods and drinks may be associated with dental erosion, and soft drink consumption appears to be increasing both in developed and developing countries. Dentists are aware that an acidic diet can contribute to the development of erosion; however, there may be confusion within the profession concerning the general health message of eating five portions of fruits and vegetables each day. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate associations between dental erosion and the consumption of acidic foods and beverages in schoolchildren in south-east Brazil. The objective was to gather information, by means of a dietary questionnaire, on frequency of intake and patterns of consumption of acidic foods and drinks in a group of schoolchildren. The hypothesis was that the experience of dental erosion among the study sample was associated with the frequency and pattern of consumption of soft drinks, fruit juices, fruits, and yogurt. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Três Corações, south-east Brazil. A sample of 458 schoolchildren, mean age 13.8 (SD 0.39) years, completed the study. Information about potential dietary risk factors for dental erosion was collected through a questionnaire survey completed by the schoolchildren. For the dental examinations, the subjects were examined for dental erosion in a school room. Associations between dental erosion and the variables under study were investigated through processes of bivariate and multivariate analyses. The statistical significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS Analysis of the questionnaire surveys showed that the frequency of consumption of sugared carbonated drinks was the only variable independently associated with the erosive process, with subjects who had a daily consumption of such drinks having a greater likelihood of having erosion (P = 0.015, odds ratio 1.752, 95% confidence interval 1.116-2.750). CONCLUSIONS Of all tested factors in this sample of schoolchildren the consumption of sugared carbonated drinks is most associated with dental erosion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The author describes the clinical appearance of and the outcomes associated with erosive tooth wear, particularly that in older people. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED The author conducted a traditional clinical review that was based on a synopsis of the current literature on dental erosion. He found that intrinsic and extrinsic acids are known to be associated with acid erosion and tooth wear. He also explored the etiology and pathogenesis of tooth wear and compared the longevity of restorations to the option of monitoring and preventing tooth wear. He found that preventive measures, which included limiting the frequency of acid exposure and using fluoride toothpastes and dentin-bonding agents, could prolong tooth life. RESULTS Tooth wear and acid erosion are common clinical findings in patients of all ages. The results of tooth wear can cause significant damage to teeth, which can require complex and costly prosthodontic treatment. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Diagnosing the cause of a patient's tooth wear can help prevent further damage.

Abstract
The sale of over-the-counter pain relief medication has increased dramatically in recent years, and typically amounts to several hundred thousands of pounds per year in the UK. Many soluble analgesic preparations contain citric acid, and it has been suggested that these formulations may cause dental erosion. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of some over-the-counter analgesics on tooth surface loss from human enamel. Six commonly available analgesics were chosen for this study and the effect of immersing unerupted human enamel was examined using non-contact optical profilometry. Two of the six analgesics investigated caused no detectable erosion (Boots soluble aspirin and Anadin Extra). Three caused statistically significant enamel erosion, but this was very slight and is thought to be clinically insignificant (Alka Seltzer, Panadol and Solpadeine). Only one analgesic caused possible potentially clinical significant enamel erosion. Further studies are needed to determine whether Aspro causes clinically significant enamel erosion.

Abstract
Several studies have reported the on dental erosive potential of sports drinks with a low
pH. Therefore, there is a need for new components that can reduce the erosive potential of a sports
drink. Hydroxyapatites (HA) are the major components of dental enamel and bone mineral as
biological apatites. In addition, HA contains a significant amount of calcium and phosphate, which
can promote remineralization. Hence, some remineralization of the enamel surface can be expected if
nano-sized hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) is added to a sports drink. The aim of this study was to evaluate
the remineralization effects of sports drinks containing nano-HA in vitro. The crowns of extracted
human molars were embedded in acrylic resin and then ground flat and polished. A commercially
available sports drink (Powerade, Coca-Cola, South Korea) was purchased from a local supermarket.
Nano-HA was added at a concentration of 0.05%, 0.25%, and 0.5%. Deionized water (DW) was used
as the negative control. The pH of each solution was measured by a pH-meter at room temperature.
The enamel specimens were immersed in each solution for 15 and 30 minutes at 37°C. In order to
evaluate remineralization effect, the VHN of the enamel surface was measured at every step by
microhardness test (JTTOSHI INC, Japan). CLSM and SEM were utilized to identify the change of
enamel surface. The pH of test solutions and VHN of enamel surface increased in proportion to the
nano-HA concentrations (P<0.05). The nano-HA could reduce the erosive potential of a sports drink
in a concentration dependent manner. These effects were confirmed by the CLSM and SEM images,
which showed the remineralization effect of nano-HA. However, more study will be needed to
examine the optimal concentration and remineralization mechanism of the nano-HA in sports drinks.
In conclusion, the addition of nano-HA to a sports drink can promote enamel remineralization.

Abstract
Tooth wear is a universal experience. The cause is usually a combination of erosion, attrition and abrasion. Attrition usually presents with flattened incisal and occlusal tooth surfaces which accurately inter-digitate. Erosion from dietary or gastric acids forms smooth lesions which typically appear as cupped occlusal/incisal and concave buccal/facial surfaces. When combined with attrition or abrasion, acids have the potential to cause significant wear. Wear reduces the thickness of enamel exposing the underlying dentine and changing the colour from the white of enamel to yellow of dentine. Acids causing erosion originate from the stomach or from the diet. Gastric acid is associated with reflux disease and eating disorders. The frequency of acidic foods and drinks and how they are consumed is important in dietary erosion. The progression of tooth wear is recognised to be slow with periods of activity and inactivity. Although restorations can be indicated, prevention and monitoring remain important strategies in maintaining the life of the teeth.
