Application of π acceptors to the spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric determination of vincamine and naftidrofuryl oxalate in their pharmaceutical preparations

Three different spectrophotometric and two spectrofluorimetric methods have been developed and validated for the determination of vincamine (VN) and naftidrofuryl oxalate (NF) in tablets. The spectrophotometric methods depend on charge transfer complex formation between each of VN and NF with 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-quinodimethane (TCNQ), 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chloroimide (DCQ) and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) at 843, 580 and 588 nm, respectively. The spectrofluorimetric methods are based on the formation of charge transfer complex between each of the two drugs and TCNQ, with measurement of the fluorophore formed at 312/375 and 284/612 nm, respectively, or with DDQ at 400/475 and 284/396 nm, respectively. In the spectrophotometric measurements, Beer's law was obeyed at concentration ranges of 1.5-16, 10-180 and 12-140 μg/ml for VN with TCNQ, DCQ, and DDQ, respectively. For NF, the corresponding concentrations were 2-28, 5-75 and 25-150 μg/ml with TCNQ, DCQ, and DDQ, respectively. In the spectrofluorimetric measurements, the ranges for VN were 0.05-0.9 and 0.3-4 μg/ml with TCNQ and DDQ, respectively, whereas for NF the ranges were 0.05-0.85 and 0.5-8 μg/ml with TCNQ and DDQ, respectively. The different experimental parameters affecting the development and stability of the formed color or fluorophore were studied and optimized and the molar ratios of the complexes were calculated. The proposed methods were validated according to ICH guidelines and were successfully applied for the determination of VN and NF in their tablet dosage forms.

Preparation, spectroscopic and antibacterial studies on charge-transfer complexes of 2-hydroxypyridine with picric acid and 7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane

The reactions of electron acceptors such as picric acid (HPA) and 7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) with 2-hydroxypyridine (HPyO) have been investigated in EtOH at room temperature. Based on elemental analysis and IR spectra of the solid CT-complexes along with the photometric titration curves for the reactions, the data obtained indicate the formation of 1:1 charge transfer complexes [(H2PyO)(PA)] and [(PyO)(HTCNQ)], respectively. The infrared and (1)H NMR spectroscopic data indicate a charge transfer interaction associated with a proton migration from the acceptor to the donor followed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding in [(H2PyO)(PA)] complex. Another charge transfer interaction was observed in [(PyO)(HTCNQ)] complex. The formation constants (KCT) for the CT-complexes are shown to be strongly dependent on the type and structure of the electron acceptors. Factors affecting the CT-processes and the kinetics of thermal decomposition of the complexes have been studied. The CT complexes were screened for their antibacterial activities against selected bacterial strains.

Spectral, thermal and kinetic studies of charge-transfer complexes formed between the highly effective antibiotic drug metronidazole and two types of acceptors: σ- and π-acceptors

Understanding the interaction between drugs and small inorganic or organic molecules is critical in being able to interpret the drug-receptor interactions and acting mechanism of these drugs. A combined solution and solid state study was performed to describe the complexation chemistry of drug metronidazole (MZ) which has a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity with two types of acceptors. The acceptors include, σ-acceptor (i.e., iodine) and π-acceptors (i.e., dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ), chloranil (CHL) and picric acid (PA)). The molecular structure, spectroscopic characteristics, the binding modes as well as the thermal stability were deduced from IR, UV-vis, (1)H NMR and thermal studies. The binding ratio of complexation (MZ: acceptor) was determined to be 1:2 for the iodine acceptor and 1:1 for the DDQ, CHL or PA acceptor, according to the CHN elemental analyses and spectrophotometric titrations. It has been found that the complexation with CHL and PA acceptors increases the values of enthalpy and entropy, while the complexation with DDQ and iodine acceptors decreases the values of these parameters compared with the free MZ donor.

Shedding light on the photostability of two intermolecular charge-transfer complexes between highly fluorescent bis-1,8-naphthalimide dyes and some π-acceptors: a spectroscopic study in solution and solid states

Given the great importance of the various uses of 1,8-naphthalimides in the trends of biology, medicine and industry, the current study focused on extending the scope of these dyes by introducing some of their charge-transfer (CT) complexes. For this purpose, two highly fluorescent bis-1,8-naphthalimide dyes and their complexes with some π-acceptors have been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The π-acceptors include picric acid (PA), chloranilic acid (CLA), tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ). The molecular structure, spectroscopic and fluorescence properties as well as the binding modes were deduced from IR, UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectral studies. The binding ratio of complexation was determined to be 1:1 according to the elemental analyses and photometric titrations. It has been found that the order of acceptance ability for the different acceptors is TCNQ>DDQ>CLA>PA. The photostability of 1,8-naphthalimide dye as a donor and its charge-transfer complex doped in polymethyl methacrylate/PMMA were exposed to UV-Vis radiation and the change in the absorption spectra was achieved at different times during irradiation period.

Development and validation of kinetic and atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods for the determination of salbutamol sulfate

Development and validation of simultaneous spectrophotometric and TLC-spectrodensitometric methods for determination of beclomethasone dipropionate and salbutamol in combined dosage form

Spectrophotometric and TLC-spectrodensitometric methods were developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of beclomethasone dipropionate (BEC) and salbutamol (SAL). The spectrophotometric methods include dual wavelength, ratio difference, constant center coupled with a novel method namely, spectrum subtraction and mean centering with mean percentage recoveries and RSD 99.72±1.07 and 99.70±1.12, 100.25±1.12 and 99.89±1.12, 99.66±1.85 and 99.19±1.32, 100.74±1.26 and 101.06±0.90 for BEC and SAL respectively. The TLC-spectrodensitometric method was based on separation of both drugs on TLC aluminum plates of silica gel 60 F254, using benzene: methanol: triethylamine (10:1.5:0.5 v/v/v) as a mobile phase, followed by densitometric measurements of their bands at 230 nm. The mean percentage recoveries and RSD were 99.07±1.25 and 101.35±1.50 for BEC and SAL respectively. The proposed methods were validated according to ICH guidelines and were applied for the simultaneous analysis of the cited drugs in synthetic mixtures and pharmaceutical preparation. The methods were found to be rapid, specific, precise and accurate and can be successfully applied for the routine analysis of BEC and SAL in their pharmaceutical formulation with no need for prior separation. The results obtained were statistically compared to each other and to that of the reported HPLC method. The statistical comparison showed that there is no significant difference regarding both accuracy and precision.

Spectroscopic investigations of the charge-transfer interaction between the drug reserpine and different acceptors: towards understanding of drug-receptor mechanism

The study of the charge-transfer interaction of the drugs may be useful in understanding the drug-receptor interactions and the mechanism of drug action. Structural and thermal stability of charge-transfer (CT) complexes formed between the drug reserpine (Res) as a donor and quinol (QL), picric acid (PA), tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) or dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) as acceptors were reported. Elemental analysis, electronic absorption, spectrophotometric titration, IR, Raman, (1)H NMR and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the new products. The thermal stability of the synthesized CT complexes was investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analyses, and the morphology and particle size of these complexes were obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The stoichiometry of the complexes (donor:acceptor molar ratio) was determined to be 1:1 for all complexes. Accordingly the formed CT complexes could be formulated as [(Res)(QL)], [(Res)(PA)], [(Res)(TCNQ)] and [(Res)(DDQ)]. It was found that the obtained CT complexes are nanoscale, semi-crystalline particles, thermally stable and formed through spontaneous reaction. The results obtained herein are satisfactory for estimation of drug Res in the pharmaceutical form.

The use of 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane for the spectrophotometric determination of some primary amines application to real water samples

A sensitive, simple, and accurate spectrophotometric method was developed for the quantitative determination of some primary aliphatic and aromatic amines, that is, ethylamine, 1,2-diaminopropane, aniline, p-aminophenol, and benzidine. The method is based on the interaction of these amines in aqueous medium with 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) reagent in the presence of a buffer solution and surfactant (in the case of aromatic amines) to form charge-transfer complexes measurable at maximum wavelengths ranging between 323 and 511 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration ranges of 0.025 and 3.0  μ g/mL and the molar absorptivity is ranged between 8.977 × 10(3) and 5.8034 × 10(4)  L · mol(-1) · cm(-1) for these amines. The method was applied for the determination of benzidine in the river, sea, and tap waters. The TCNQ complexes with the previously mentioned amines were formed in the ratio of 1 : 1 amine : TCNQ, and their stability constants ranged between 8.78 × 10(4) and 1.844 × 10(5) L · mol(-1).

Charge-transfer interaction of drug quinidine with quinol, picric acid and DDQ: Spectroscopic characterization and biological activity studies towards understanding the drug-receptor mechanism

Investigation of charge-transfer (CT) complexes of drugs has been recognized as an important phenomenon in understanding of the drug–receptor binding mechanism. Structural, thermal, morphological and biological behavior of CT complexes formed between drug quinidine (Qui) as a donor and quinol (QL), picric acid (PA) or dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) as acceptors were reported. The newly synthesized CT complexes have been spectroscopically characterized via elemental analysis; infrared (IR), Raman, ¹H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopy; powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD); thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the obtained complexes are nanoscale, semi-crystalline particles, thermally stable and spontaneous. The molecular composition of the obtained complexes was determined using spectrophotometric titration method and was found to be 1:1 ratios (donor:acceptor). Finally, the biological activities of the obtained CT complexes were tested for their antibacterial activities. The results obtained herein are satisfactory for estimation of drug Qui in the pharmaceutical form.

Preparation, spectroscopic and thermal characterization of new charge-transfer complexes of ethidium bromide with π-acceptors. In vitro biological activity studies

Ethidium bromide (EtBr) is a strong DNA binder and has been widely used to probe DNA structure in drug-DNA and protein-DNA interaction. Four new charge-transfer (CT) complexes consisting of EtBr as donor and quinol (QL), picric acid (PA), tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) or dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) as acceptors, were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, electronic absorption, spectrophotometric titration, IR, Raman, (1)H NMR and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. The stoichiometry of these complexes was found to be 1:2 ratio and having the formula [(EtBr)(acceptor)]. The thermal stability of the synthesized CT complexes was investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analyses, and the morphology and particle size of these complexes were obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The CT complexes were also tested for its antibacterial activity against two Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and two Gram-negative bacteria; Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeuroginosa strains by using Tetracycline as standard and antifungal property against Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans by using amphotericin B as standard. The results were compared with the standard drugs and significant conclusions were obtained. The results indicated that the [(EtBr)(QL)2] complex had exerted excellent inhibitory activity against the growth of the tested bacterial strains.

Synthesis, spectrophotometric, structural and thermal studies of the charge transfer complex of p-phenylenediamine, as an electron donor with pi acceptor 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid

The interaction between p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as a donor with the pi acceptor 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (DNB) has been investigated spectrophotometrically in methanol at room temperature. CT complex formed as a result of transfer of lone pair of electrons and exhibits well resolved charge transfer bands in the regions where neither donor nor acceptor have any absorption. The stoichiometry of the charge transfer complex (CTC) was found to be 1:1. The solid state CTC has also been synthesized, and has been characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectra, (1)H NMR spectroscopy and electronic absorption. The thermal stability of CT complex was studies using TGA and DTA analyses techniques. On the basis of the studies, the structure of CT complex is [(PPD)(DNB)], and a general mechanism for its formation is proposed. The formation constant and other physical parameters of the CT complex were determined by the Benesi-Hildebrand equation.

Use of N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate for the spectrophotometric determination of some phenolic and amine drugs

Spectrophotometric methods are proposed for the determination of drugs containing a phenol group [salbutamol sulphate (SLB), ritodrine hydrochloride (RTD), isoxsuprine hydrochloride (IXP)] and drugs containing an aromatic amine group [dapsone hydrochloride (DAP), sulfamethoxazole (SFM), and sulfadiazine (SFD)] in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The methods are based on coupling of N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate with the drugs in the presence of KIO4 to give a green colored product (λmax at 670 nm) and a red colored product (λmax at 550 nm), respectively. Linear relationships with good correlation coefficients (0.9986-0.9996) were found between absorbance and the corresponding concentration of drugs in the range 1-7, 2-22, 1-17, 1.5-12, 2-25, and 2-21 μg mL-1 for SLB, RTD, IXP, DAP, SFM and SFD, respectively. Variable parameters such as temperature, reaction time and concentration of the reactants have been analyzed and optimized. The RSD of intra-day and inter-day studies was in the range of 0.2-1.0 and 0.4-1.0%, respectively. No interference was observed from common pharmaceutical adjuvants. The reliability and performance of the proposed methods was validated statistically; the percentage recovery ranged from 99.5 ± 0.1 to 99.9 ± 0.3%. Limits of detection were 0.14, 0.21, 0.51, 0.44, 0.33 and 0.37 μg mL-1 for SLB, RTD, IXP, DAP, SFM, and SFD, respectively.

A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of methyldopa

A new, simple and low cost spectrophotometric method for the determination of methyldopa in pharmaceutical preparations was developed. The method was based on the coupling of methyldopa with 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chlorimide (DCQ). The absorbance maximum (λ max) of the resulted colored product was at 400 nm. Different buffers were used to determine the optimal pH for the reaction. About 1% w/v acetate buffer with pH 8.0 gave the optimal pH required for the reaction. Of the different solvents tried, water and ethanol were found to be the most suitable solvents. Beer's law was obeyed in concentration range of 4-20 μg/ml methyldopa. The correlation coefficient was found to be (r = 0.9975). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 1.1 μg/ml and 3.21 μg/ml, respectively. The reaction ratio between methyldopa and DCQ was studied and found to be 1:3. The work included the study of the possible interference of hydrochlorothiazide found in combination with methyldopa tablets. The method was validated and results obtained for the assay of two different brands of methyldopa tablets were compared with the BP method (colorimetric). The repeatability and reproducibility of the developed method were evaluated and the obtained results quoted. The derivative formed as a result of the reaction of methyldopa with DCQ was isolated and its possible mechanistic pathway was suggested.

Detection of propranolol in pharmaceutical formulations by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy

This paper describes an analytical reflectometric method that has an objective not only the industrial quality control but also to detect possible falsifications and/or adulterations of propranolol in pharmaceutical formulations. The method is based on the diffuse reflectance measurements of the colored product (III) of the spot test reaction between propranolol hydrochloride (I) and 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chloroimide (II) using filter paper as solid support. Spot test conditions have been investigated using experimental design in order to identify and optimize the critical factors. The factors evaluated were DCQ concentration, propranolol solvent and DCQ solvent. The best reaction conditions were achieved with the addition of 30 microL of propranolol solution in ethanol 35% (v/v) and 30 microL of DCQ solution at 70 mg mL(-1) in acetone, in this order. All reflectance measurements were carried out at 500 nm and the linear range was from 8.45x10(-4) to 8.45x10(-2)mol L(-1) (r=0.998). The limit of detection was 1.01x10(-4)mol L(-1). No interference was observed from the assessed excipients and drugs. The method was applied to determine propranolol in commercial brands of pharmaceuticals. The results obtained by the proposed method were favorably compared with those given by the British Pharmacopoeia procedure.

Utility of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane charge transfer reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of trazodone, amineptine and amitriptyline hydrochlorides

A simple and rapid spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of tricyclic anti-depressant drugs such as trazodone (TZH), amineptine (APH) and amitriptyline (ATPH) hydrochlorides in pure form and in different pharmaceutical preparations. The charge transfer (CT) reaction between TZH, APH and ATPH as electron donors and TCNQ as electron acceptor was utilized for their spectrophotometric determination. The optimum experimental conditions, like time, temperature, stoichiometry, solvents, for the CT complex formation are established. The method permits the determination of TZH, APH and ATPH over a concentration range of 10-400, 10-440 and 10-300 microg ml(-1), respectively. The sensitivity (S) is found to be 0.09, 0.087 and 0.069 g cm(-2) for TZH, APH and ATPH, respectively. The SD values are found to be 0.146-0.293, 0.154-0.285 and 0.091-0.212 and RSD values are 0.142-1.92, 0.297-1.92 and 0.212-0.915 for TZH, APH and ATPH, respectively. The low values of the relative standard deviation indicate the high accuracy and precision of the method. The mean recovery values obtained together with a high correlation coefficient values, amount in the range 98-101.5, 98.7-102.9 and 93-101.9 for TZH, APH and ATPH, respectively. The method is applicable for the assay of the investigated drugs in different dosage forms and the results are in good agreement with those obtained by the official method.

Spectrophotometric determination of trazodone, amineptine and amitriptyline hydrochlorides through ion-pair formation with molybdenum and thiocyanate

Extraction spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of tricyclic drugs such as trazodone (TZH), amineptine (APH) and amitriptyline (ATPH) hydrochlorides in pure form and in the dosage forms coming from different Egyptian markets. The method based on the formation of ion-pairs between these drugs under investigation and inorganic complex of Mo(V)-thiocyanate followed by its extraction with methylene chloride. The optimum conditions for the ion-pairs formation are established. The method permits the determination of TZH, APH and ATPH over the concentration range of 2-28, 2-32 and 1-30 microg ml(-1), respectively. The Sandell sensitivity (S) is found to be 0.105, 0.138 and 0.118 g cm(-2) for TZH, APH and ATPH, respectively. The SD is found to be 0.16-0.377, 0.12-0.259 and 0.091-0.286 and the R.S.D. are 0.14-0.55, 0.12-0.399 and 0.095-0.485 for TZH, APH and ATPH, respectively. The method is applicable for the assay of the investigated drugs in different dosage forms and the results are in good agreement with those obtained by the official method.

Spectrophotometric and electrical studies of charge-transfer complexes of sodium flucloxacillin with pi-acceptors

The present study is interested to develop a simple, rapid and accurate spectrophotometric method for determination of sodium flucloxacillin (fluc) in pure form and pharmaceutical formulations. The charge-transfer (CT) interactions between sodium flucloxacillin as electron donor and chloranilic acid (CLA), dichloroquinone 4-chloroimide (DCQ), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) and 7,7,8,8 tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ), as pi-electron acceptors have been investigated spectrophotometrically. Different variables affecting the reaction were studied and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationships with good correlation coefficients (0.9979-0.9995) were found between the absorbance and the concentration of the drug in the range 16-880 microg ml(-1). The proposed methods were applied successfully to the determination of the examined drug either in pure or pharmaceutical dosage forms with good accuracy and precision. The formation of the CT-complexes and the sites of interaction were confirmed by elemental analysis CHN, UV-vis, IR, (1)H NMR and mass spectra techniques. Based on Job's method of continuous variation plots, the obtained results indicate the formation of 1:1 charge-transfer complexes with the general formula [(fluc)(acceptor)]. Statistical analysis of the obtained results showed no significant difference between the proposed method and official method.

Factorial design applied to a non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis method for the separation of β-agonists

The aim of this work was to study the effects of both chemical and instrumental parameters on the separation of beta-agonists (clenbuterol (CLE), salbutamol (SAL) and terbutaline (TER)) by non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) method. Due to the number of parameters involved and their interactions, factorial experimental designs (EDs) at two levels was applied to investigate the influence of experimental factors (ionic strength of the background electrolyte (BGE), organic solvent, injection time, voltage and temperature) in sets of several CE responses (resolution, (RS), number of theoretical plate (N), tailing factor (TF) and migration time (tm)). As a compromise between the four responses, the optimum condition was obtained in 18 mM ammonium acetate in methanol (MeOH):acetonitrile (ACN):glacial acetic acid (66:33:1%, v/v/v) using an injection time of 4 s, the voltage and the temperature of 28 kV and 24 degrees C, respectively. The proposed NACE permitted the baseline separation of the three beta-agonists within 10.5 min with good repeatability (%RSD < 3.5%) and linearity (r2 > 0.99). The developed method was applicable for the analysis of the beta-agonists in syrup and tablets and the NACE condition was compatible with a mass spectrometer detector.

Electronic, infrared, and 1HNMR spectral studies of the novel charge-transfer complexes of o-tolidine and p-toluidine with alternation pi-acceptors (3,5-dinitro benzoic acid and 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chloroimide) in CHCl3 solvent

The rapid interaction between o-tolidine and p-toluidine (pi-donors) with the pi-acceptors, e.g., 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (DNB) and 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chloroimide (DCQ) results in the formation of 1:1 charge-transfer complexes as the final products, [(o-tolidine) (acceptor)] and [(p-toluidine) (acceptor)]. The final products of the reactions have been isolated and characterized using FTIR, 1HNMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis as well as photometric titration. The stoichiometry and apparent formation constants of the complexes formed were determined by applying the conventional spectrophotometric molar ratio method.

Determination of salbutamol in syrups by capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection (CE-C4D)

This paper describes the separation and quantification of salbutamol in pharmaceutical products (salbutamol syrups) by capillary electrophoresis (CE) with contactless conductivity detection (C(4)D). The system was studied by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) and free solution capillary electrophoresis (FSCE), being the latter chosen in function of best resolution and sensitivity in comparison with the MEKC method. CE-C(4)D was applied to analysis of salbutamol in syrups utilizing 1.0 x 10(-2) molL(-1) acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer (pH 4.9) as running electrolyte. Tetraethylammonium (TEA) solution was used as internal standard. The results obtained include a linear dynamic range from 7. x 10(-5) to 3.0 x 10(-4) molL(-1) and good repeatability (R.S.D.=4.7% for n=10 for a 7.0 x 10(-5) molL(-1) salbutamol solution). The detection limit was calculated as 1.0 x 10(-5) molL(-1) and the limit of quantification was estimated as 3.3 x 10(-5) molL(-1). For syrups analysis the reproducibility presented deviations between 1.5% and 2.5% (three different days) obtained for measurements in triplicate.

Synthesis and structure investigation of the antibiotic amoxicillin complexes of d-block elements

The study of some transition metals (M) and amoxicillin trihydrate (ACT) ligand complexes (M-ACT) that formed in solution involved the spectrophotometric determination of stoichiometric ratios and their stability constants and these ratios were found to be M:ACT = 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 in some instances. The calculated stability constants of these chelates, under selected optimum conditions, using molar ratio method have values ranging from K(f) = 10(7) to 10(14). These data were confirmed by calculations of their free energy of formation deltaG, which corresponded to their high stabilities. The separated solid complexes were studied using elemental analyses, IR, reflectance spectra, magnetic measurements, mass spectra and thermal analyses (TGA and DTA). The proposed general formulae of these complexes were found to be ML(H2O)w(H2O)x(OH)y(Cl)2, where M = Fe(II), Co(III), w = 0, x = 2, y = 1, z = 0; M = Co(II), w = 0, x = 1, y = 0, z = 1; M = Fe(III), w = 0, x = 1, y = 2, z = 0; M = Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II), w = 2, x = 0, y = 1, z = 0, where w = water of crystallization, x = coordinated water, y = coordinated OH(-) and z = Cl- in the outer sphere of the complex. The IR spectra show a shift of nu(NH) (2968 cm(-1)) to 2984-2999 cm(-1) of imino group of the ligand ACT and the absence of nu(CO) (beta-lactame) band at 1774 cm(-1) and the appearance of the band at 1605-1523 cm(-1) in all complexes suggest that 6,7-enolization takes place before coordination of the ligand to the metal ions. The bands of M-N (at 625-520 cm(-1)) and of M-O (at 889-7550 cm(-1)) proved the bond of N (of amino and imino groups) and O of C-O group of the ligand to the metal ions. The reflectance spectra and room temperature magnetic measurements refer to octahedral complexes of Fe(II) and Fe(III); square planner form of Co(II), reduced Co(III), Ni(II) and Cu(II)-ACT complexes but tetrahedral form of Zn-ACT complex. The thermal degradation of these complexes is confirmed by their mass spectral fragmentation. These data confirmed the proposed structural and general formulae of these complexes.

Sensitive detection of salbutamol using europium-enhanced fluorescence with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as coligand

In this work a simple and sensitive fluorimetric method for determination of salbutamol (4-[2-(tert-butylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl]-2-(hydroxymethyl) phenol) using an Eu enhanced signal was developed. The employed methodology is based on the formation of a ternary complex formed with Eu, salbutamol and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO). Intermolecular transfer of energy from the excited organic molecule to the lanthanide followed by lanthanide emission is responsible for excitation of the lanthanide ion in complex solutions and fluorescent enhancement. The luminescence properties of the ternary complex formed with TOPO and optimum formation conditions were investigated. The calibration curve is linear in the range between 6.92-180 microg l(-1) of salbutamol. The detection limit was 2.31 microg l(-1). Common excipients for these formulations were not found to interfere. A proposed method for the assay in commercial aerosols and nebulizer solutions containing salbutamol was applied with very good precision.
