Translating health status questionnaires and evaluating their quality: the IQOLA Project approach. International Quality of Life Assessment

Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Kidney Transplant Questionnaire 25 to Greek

BACKGROUND

Kidney transplantation leads to continuous improvement in the survival rates of kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and has been established as the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become an important outcome measure. It is highly important to develop reliable methods to evaluate HRQoL with disease-specific questionnaires.

AIM

To translate the disease-specific instrument Kidney Transplant Questionnaire 25 (KTQ-25) to the Greek language and perform a cross-cultural adaptation.

METHODS

The translation and adaptation of the original English version of the KTQ-25 to the Greek language were performed based on the International Quality of Life Assessment.

RESULTS

Eighty-four KTRs (59 males; mean age 53.5 ± 10.7 years; mean estimated glomerular filtration rate 47.7 ± 15.1 mL/min/1.73 m²; mean transplant vintage 100.5 ± 83.2 months) completed the Greek version of the KTQ-25 and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey, and the results were used to evaluate the reliability of the Greek KTQ-25. The Cronbach alpha coefficients for all the KTQ-25 dimensions were satisfactory (physical symptoms = 0.639, fatigue = 0.856, uncertainty/fear = 0.661, appearance = 0.593, emotions = 0.718, total score = 0.708). The statistically significant correlation coefficients among the KTQ-25 dimensions ranged from 0.226 to 0.644. The correlation coefficients of the KTQ-25 dimensions with the SF-36 physical component summary (PCS) ranged from 0.196 to 0.550; the correlation coefficients of the KTQ-25 with the SF-36 mental component summary (MCS) ranged from 0.260 to 0.655; and the correlation coefficients of the KTQ-25 with the total scores with the SF-36 PCS and MCS were 0.455 and 0.613, respectively.

CONCLUSION

According to the findings, the Greek version of the KTQ-25 is valid and reliable for administration among kidney transplant patients in Greece.

The TEOGIC study project: a comprehensive characterization of early onset gastrointestinal cancer in the Northern area of Spain

BACKGROUND

Gastrointestinal cancers represent one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. Strikingly, the incidence of Early Onset Gastrointestinal Cancer (EOGIC) has been rising during the last decades and changes in lifestyle and environmental exposure seem to play a role. EOGIC has been defined as a different entity compared to on-average gastrointestinal cancer, with distinct clinical and molecular characteristics. Inherent to the particularities of younger age, there is an unmet need for a tailored approach for the management of these patients. The TEOGIC proposes a comprehensive study to characterize EOGIC patients in the northern of Spain.

METHODS

Patients with histologically confirmed new diagnosis of colorectal, gastroesophageal and pancreatic adenocarcinoma will be considered for two cohorts: EOGIC (≤ 50 years old) and non-EOGIC (60-75 years old), with a ratio of 1:2. Two hundred and forty patients will be recruited in 4 Public Hospitals from northern Spain. After receiving unified informed consent, demographic and clinical data of the patients will be collected in a REDCap database. Lifestyle related data will be obtained in questionnaires assessing diet, physical activity and the general quality of life of the patients before diagnosis. Biological samples prior to any onco-specific treatment will be obtained for the analyses of circulating inflammatory proteins, gut microbiota, and the proteome of the tumor microenvironment. Histologic characteristics and routine biomarkers will be also collected. Thereafter, data will be integrated and analyzed to assess tumor specific, pan-tumor and sex-associated differential characteristics of EOGIC.

DISCUSSION

The underlying risk factors and differential characteristics of EOGIC remain poorly studied, particularly in our geographical area. Although limited by the exploratory nature and the small sample size estimated to be recruited, TEOGIC represents the first attempt to comprehensively characterize these young patients, and thus attend to their special needs. Findings derived from this study could contribute to raise awareness and preventive behaviors in the population. In parallel, molecular studies could lead to the identification of potential novel non-invasive biomarkers and therapeutic targets that would help in the development of the tailored clinical management of these patients, focusing on screening programs for early diagnosis and precision medicine.

Psychometric properties of Persian version of advance care planning questionnaire among older adults in Iran

INTRODUCTION

Advanced age is associated with life-threatening conditions at the end of life. Many of these persons at the end of their lives cannot make decisions because of the variable consciousness. They are able to make decisions and identify their care priorities, in a process called advanced care planning. So, an instrument is required for investigating ACP of the elderly population. This study was performed to determine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the advanced care planning questionnaire(ACPQ) in elderly population referring to Tehran.

METHOD

This methodological study was performed in five hospitals in 2021-2022. A total of 390 eligible elderlies were included. The psychometric assessment including translation, face validity, content validity were performed Alsothe exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were assessed. Reliability were done by internal consistency by assessing Cronbach alpha and stability was performed using test-retest.

RESULTS

The face validity of the instrument was performed with minor changes. The content validity index for all of the items was above 0.79. In EFA four factors was extracted also CFA showed that the four-factor model has a good fit of the data (RMSEA: 0.04; NFI: 0.97 CFI: 0.99; IFI: 0.99; RFI: 0.96; AGFI: 0.87; GFI 0/90; standardized RMR: 0.02). Cronbach alpha and ICC were 0.72-0.94 and 0.85-0.96, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The Persian version of the advance care planning questionnaire has desirable psychometric properties for measuring the advanced care planning of the elderly population. In addition, healthcare providers in Iran can employ this questionnaire in their practice and research.

Development of the Japanese version of the awareness questionnaire for assessment of self-awareness after acquired brain injury: reliability and validity

BACKGROUND

The evaluation of impaired self-awareness (ISA) after brain injury is not widespread in Japan, and there is a lack of Japanese assessments of self-awareness.

OBJECTIVES

To translate the original version of the Awareness Questionnaire (AQ), an instrument for assessing ISA, into Japanese using a validated method and examine its reliability and validity in inpatients with stroke.

METHODS

This cross-sectional, prospective study enrolled 130 participants. The double-translation process was used to develop the Japanese version of the AQ.

RESULTS

Data were collected from 120 patients. High intra-rater reliability was observed for the patient (Cronbach's α = 0.824) and clinician samples (Cronbach's α = 0.933). High intra- and inter-rater reliability were found for all AQ items [interclass coefficient (ICC) (1, 1) = 0.828, ICC (2, 1) = 0.852, ICC (3, 1) = 0.848]; however, the sub-item analysis revealed only moderate reliability. Validity assessment revealed a low but significant positive correlation (r = 0.209; p < 0.05) between the Japanese version of the AQ and the Japanese version of the Self-Regulation Skills Interview and a low but significant negative correlation (r = 0.197; p < 0.05) between the Japanese version of the AQ and the Mini-Mental State Examination.

CONCLUSIONS

The Japanese version of the AQ was developed and applied to stroke patients, but the concept of post-stroke ISA may differ from ISA after traumatic brain injury, highlighting the need for a stroke-specific version of the AQ.

Polysomnographic characteristics of excessive daytime sleepiness phenotypes in obstructive sleep apnea: results from the international sleep apnea global interdisciplinary consortium

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a major symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Traditional polysomnographic (PSG) measures only partially explain EDS in OSA. This study analyzed traditional and novel PSG characteristics of two different measures of EDS among patients with OSA.

METHODS

Sleepiness was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (>10 points defined as "risk of dozing") and a measure of general sleepiness (feeling sleepy ≥ 3 times/week defined as "feeling sleepy"). Four sleepiness phenotypes were identified: "non-sleepy," "risk of dozing only," "feeling sleepy only," and "both at risk of dozing and feeling sleepy."

RESULTS

Altogether, 2083 patients with OSA (69% male) with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 events/hour were studied; 46% were "non-sleepy," 26% at "risk of dozing only," 7% were "feeling sleepy only," and 21% reported both. The two phenotypes at "risk of dozing" had higher AHI, more severe hypoxemia (as measured by oxygen desaturation index, minimum and average oxygen saturation [SpO2], time spent < 90% SpO2, and hypoxic impacts) and they spent less time awake, had shorter sleep latency, and higher heart rate response to arousals than "non-sleepy" and "feeling sleepy only" phenotypes. While statistically significant, effect sizes were small. Sleep stages, frequency of arousals, wake after sleep onset and limb movement did not differ between sleepiness phenotypes after adjusting for confounders.

CONCLUSIONS

In a large international group of patients with OSA, PSG characteristics were weakly associated with EDS. The physiological measures differed among individuals characterized as "risk of dozing" or "non-sleepy," while "feeling sleepy only" did not differ from "non-sleepy" individuals.

Validity, reliability and responsiveness of the French translation of the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation Questionnaire (PRWE)

INTRODUCTION

The patient-rated wrist evaluation questionnaire (PRWE) is a specific wrist questionnaire, developed in Canada that has been validated and proved reliable and sensitive. It assesses pain and function. Unfortunately, there was no validated French-language version. It is important that a translation should be methodologically rigorous, as both linguistic and cultural factors come into play.

OBJECTIVE

To produce a French-language version of the PRWE, culturally adapted to the French-speaking populations of Europe and North America.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A validated protocol was used to produce a French-language version of the PRWE (PRWE-Fr) that would be culturally acceptable for the French-speaking populations of Europe and North America. Reliability and responsiveness analyses were performed and PRWE-Fr scores were compared to F-QuickDASH-D/S (French translation of short-form Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand-Disability/Symptoms) scores to assess validity.

RESULTS

A French-language version of the PRWE (PRWE-Fr) was accepted by a multinational committee, then validated in 65 French-speaking subjects, divided into 2 groups for analyses. A strong positive correlation was found between PRWE-Fr and F-QuickDASH-D/S scores. Comparison of results between two PRWE-Fr sessions at a 1-week interval found a very strong correlation (ρ=0.93; r2=0.868; p<0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient for total PRWE-Fr score demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC: 0.93; 95% CI: [0.859; 0.969]; p<0.001). Responsiveness analysis revealed greater sensitivity to change than for the F-QuickDASH-D/S (standardized response mean [SRM], 1.14 versus 1.04 respectively).

DISCUSSION

A French-language version of the PRWE was produced and validated for use in French-speaking populations. It should facilitate evaluation of results in French-speaking settings, collaboration in multinational studies and comparison between studies performed in different countries.

Differences Between Clients and Professionals of Forensic and Nonforensic Flexible Assertive Community Treatment

RATIONALE

Flexible assertive community treatment (FACT) has been adapted for application with clients with criminal justice involvement (forensic FACT [ForFACT]). Differences have been found between clients of ForFACT services and clients of nonforensic FACT services; however, less is known about differences in behaviors. Furthermore, because of the different guiding frameworks and goals of treatment, and the difference in clients' presenting problems, it is possible professionals also differ in terms of specialist skills they need and in areas of care they deem important.

METHOD

The current study used an online survey among professionals of ForFACT and non-ForFACT teams to gain insight into mental disorders and clients' presenting behavioral problems and to gain insight into the level of forensic vigilance needed by professionals of both services. We also gathered information pertaining to important areas of care and what both groups of professionals view as key nursing interventions.

RESULTS

ForFACT clients differ from non-ForFACT clients in terms of the clients' presenting psychiatric problems. Furthermore, ForFACT professionals indicated they encounter more clients who show aggressive and (sexually) transgressive behavior. ForFACT professionals were found to score higher on forensic vigilance; however, no differences pertaining to important areas of care and key nursing interventions were found.

CONCLUSION

These findings further strengthen the notion that ForFACT clients are a different group compared with non-ForFACT clients, and professionals need different skills. Organizations could provide tailored supervision and training to ForFACT professionals.

Validation and evaluation of school-based mental health literacy training program "The Guide Cymru" in Iranian adolescent students aged 13-15: study protocol

BACKGROUND

Schools are an ideal setting for enhancing mental health literacy, a crucial strategy for improving adolescents' mental health knowledge and attitudes and promoting help-seeking. "The Guide Cymru" program is an adaptation of the mental health literacy program" The Guide" that was developed in Canada. The program will be culturally adapted for 13- to 15-year-old Iranian adolescent students in the first secondary schools.

METHODS

In this randomized controlled trial, using the stratified random sampling procedure, the whole eighth and ninth grade student body (aged 13 to 15) from Sirjan City's first secondary schools will be included in the study. Twenty first secondary schools will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: control or intervention. Finally, 562 students and 40 teachers will participate in the research. The tools of mental health literacy scale (MHLs), mental health general knowledge and attitudes related to mental disorders/illnesses are employed in this study.

DISCUSSION

This trial aims to be to explore whether "The Guide Cymru", a mental health literacy program offered to students as part of the school curriculum, can decrease the stigma associated with mental health and promote help-seeking behaviors among students.

Child and adolescent participation measurement tools and their translations: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Numerous participation measurement tools targeting children and youth have been developed. Despite the translation of these tools into specific languages and cultures, the reliability and validity of the translated versions remain uncertain. To address this gap in knowledge, this study aims to identify tools for assessing the participation of children aged 5-18 years and to appraise the psychometric properties of their translated versions.

METHODS

Four electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies published in English. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guidelines was followed. Study titles and abstracts were screened by four independent reviewers. Data were extracted for both original and translated versions of eligible tools. Instrument quality assessments were performed using the Outcome Measures Rating Form Guidelines. Any discrepancies were resolved by consensus.

RESULTS

Out of the 31 measurement tools examined, 18 tools had at least one translated version available, and among those original measurement tools, a total of 58 translated versions were identified. The most widely translated tool was the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (12 languages), and the most frequently translated language was Chinese (7 tools). Most translated versions verified internal consistency and content validity. Only three translated versions were verified inter-rater reliability, and seven translated versions were tested criterion validity with the gold standard tools assessing participation of children (e.g., accelerometer, Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory and four 24-h recalls). None of the translated versions were tested for intra-rater reliability and responsiveness.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings can support the selection of psychometrically sound tools for children with disabilities, given their culture and language, and tool quality.

The Translation, Culture-Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale Among Chinese Older Population

Purpose

This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the cardiac rehabilitation barriers scale to the Chinese, and examine its reliability and validity among the older population.

Methods

An approach comprising translation, cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity examination in the Chinese version was conducted in two hospitals in Jilin, China. The t-tests were used to compare the sex differences between each item. Participants included Chinese individuals >60 who were eligible for the cardiac rehabilitation program.

Results

In total, 325 participants completed the questionnaire with an average age of 61.23 ± 9.68 years. The item-total correlations were 0.432 to 0.678. Factor analysis of CRBS-C (Kaiser Meyer Olkin = 0.867, Bartlett's test p = 0.000) revealed four factors: logistical factors, comorbidities/functional status, perceived need/healthcare factors, and work/time conflict. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated a good model fit (χ2/df = 1.84, RMSEA = 0.051, CFI = 0.953, TLI = 0.945, SRMR=0.046). Cronbach's alpha was 0.88 for the scale, ranging from 0.801 to 0.88 for each item, which indicates the internal reliability was acceptable.

Conclusion

The Chinese version of the CRRS has acceptable reliability and validity in the Chinese elderly population.

Validity and reliability of the Persian version of the STarT musculoskeletal tool

BACKGROUND

The Subgrouping for Targeted Treatment (STarT) musculoskeletal (MSK) tool stratifies patients with MSK disorders (MSDs) into prognostic categories based on poor outcomes.

PURPOSE

This study aimed at investigating the validity and reliability of the Persian STarT MSK tool in people suffering from painful MSDs in Iran.

METHODS

A total of 593 subjects with painful MSDs including neck, shoulder, low back, knee, and multisite pain received and completed the STarT MSK tool, visual analog scale (VAS), EuroQol five-dimensions three-levels questionnaire (EQ-5D-3 L), short form-36 health survey questionnaire (SF-36), and Örebro musculoskeletal pain screening questionnaire (ÖMPSQ) in the first visit. To examine test-retest reliability, 234 patients completed the STarT MSK tool 2 days after the initial visit.

RESULTS

In this study, 139 (23.5%), 266 (44.9%), and 188 (31.7%) participants were classified as low-, medium-, and high-risk groupings for poor outcomes, respectively. Spearman's correlation coefficient showed a strong relationship among Persian STarT MSK tool and EQ-5D-3 L (-0.78), SF-36 (-0.76), and OMPSQ (0.70). The results of known-group validity indicated that this tool could distinguish among the participants in different risk subgroups based on the scores of the ÖMPSQ, VAS, SF36, and EQ-5D-5 L (p < .001). No ceiling and floor effects were observed. Cronbach's alpha and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC2,1) were acceptable (0.71) and excellent (0.98), respectively.

CONCLUSION

The Persian version of STarT MSK tool has shown to be a valid and reliable instrument to stratify people with painful MSDs into low-, medium-, and high-risk subgroups based on persistent pain disability.

Development and validation of the Iranian version of the Children's Experiences of Dental Anxiety Measure (CEDAM)

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to develop the Iranian version of the Children's Experiences of Dental Anxiety Measure (CEDAM) and evaluate its validity and reliability in assessing dental anxiety in children aged 9-16.

METHODS

The CEDAM was translated into Persian following the guidelines of the IQOLA project. A ‎sample of children completed the measure in a clinical setting, with a subgroup completing it ‎again to assess test-retest reliability. Concurrent criterion validity was evaluated by having all ‎participants complete the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS) alongside the ‎CEDAM. Construct validity was examined using exploratory and confirmatory factor ‎analyses.‎ RESULTS: The study included 275 children between the ages of 9 and 16. The Iranian version of CEDAM ‎exhibited excellent internal consistency with a Cronbach's ⍺ coefficient of 0.83. Test-retest ‎reliability was also high, with an intraclass correlation coefficient value of 0.96. Furthermore, there was a significant and ‎positive correlation between CEDAM and MCDAS scores (ρ = 0.72, p < .01). Exploratory ‎factor analysis identified two factors, and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the ‎instrument aligned well with the factor structure obtained from the exploratory analysis.‎ CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence supporting the validity and reliability of the Iranian version of ‎CEDAM as a valuable tool for evaluating dental anxiety in Persian-speaking children between ‎the ages of 9 and 16.‎.

Validity and reliability of the Persian version of the trunk impairment scale in people with multiple sclerosis

BACKGROUND

In order to provide an important measuring tool for the assessment, prognosis of recovery, and treatment of people with multiple sclerosis (PWMS), the aim of this research is to examine the validity and reliability of the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) in Persian.

METHODS

The research included 105 PWMS. The TIS questionnaire was translated and culturally equivalent according to the IQOLA approach. The Intra Class Correlations (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha were used to assess the internal consistency of the questionnaire. Barthel Index (BI), Time Up and Go (TUG), Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale-12 (MSWS-12), and Trunk Control Test (TCT) scores were correlated with the TIS score in order to assess validity.

RESULTS

86 of 105 participants in this study were female. For several subscales, the ICC correlation coefficient ranged from 0.89 to 0.98. The Cronbach's alpha value of the TIS total score indicates that the TIS questionnaire has quite good internal consistency. (Cronbach's alpha=0.97). The TIS and the MSWS-12, BI, TUG, and TCT questionnaires have correlation coefficients of 0.78, 0.72, 0.60, and 0.71, respectively, indicating strong construct and concurrent validity.

CONCLUSION

The results of the research showed that the TIS in Persian is a relevant and reliable tool for assessing trunk abnormalities in Persian-speaking PWMS.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Interview Satisfaction Questionnaire (ISQ) to Assess Unmet Health Communication Needs of Iranian Breast Cancer Patients

Autonomous and patient-centered health communication (PCHC) between a healthcare provider (HCP) and a client (HCC) is a critical fundament for successful healthcare outcomes. A standard and validated data collection tool for studying the satisfaction of Iranian breast cancer patients (BCPs) with various aspects of their health communication with HCPs does not exist. The current study assessed the application, feasibility, and cultural appropriateness of the Persian-translated version of the interview satisfaction questionnaire (ISQ) in the Iranian context. A standard translation/back-translation procedure was used to prepare a preliminary Persian version of the ISQ (ISQ-P) which was then evaluated for content and face validity by a panel of experts. The study data were collected from 200 breast cancer patients and used to estimate the internal consistency measure of Cronbach's alpha and intra-class correlation coefficient. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to verify the compatibility of the instrument's identified dimensions with the original ISQ's factor structure. The calculated content validity index (CVI = 0.89), content validity ratio (CVR = 0.49), and Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.79) indicated the appropriateness of the ISQ-P for its intended purpose. The CFA's outputs (root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.09, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.954, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.931, standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.04) affirmed the fitness of the study data to the original 4-factor conceptual model. The study findings supported the suitability of ISQ-P for assessing health communication episodes by Persian-speaking BCPs. However, due to cultural variation, cross-border diversity of health systems, and organizational circumstances, further validity and reliability appraisal of the ISQ-P in distinct sub-samples is recommended.

Validity and reliability of the Niigata PPPD Questionnaire in a Western population

PURPOSE

To analyze the psychometric properties of the Niigata Questionnaire (NPQ) for use in a European population with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD).

METHODS

Observational study included 140 patients with different vestibular conditions. Construct validity, internal consistency and concurrent validity were analyzed. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to test diagnostic values.

RESULTS

Of the 140 patients, 47 had a diagnosis of PPPD. Factorial analysis showed a single-factor structure and concurrent validity analysis showed strong correlations with other instruments. Cronbach alpha coefficients of 0.938 for the total score, 0.869 for the standing and gait subscale, 0.803 for the subscale of movements and 0.852 for the visual stimulation subscale were obtained. The reproducibility was substantial except for the standing subscale, which could be considered moderate. For the standing, movement and visual stimulation subscales and for the total score, the SEM was 3.27, 2.41, 2.50 and 6.63, respectively, and the MDC was 6.40, 4.72, 4.91 and 12.99, respectively. The NPQ total score showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.661, a sensitivity of 72.34 and a specificity of 55.91 for discriminating between PPPD and other vestibular disorders.

CONCLUSIONS

The NPQ is feasible for use in a Western population and presents a uni-factorial structure, high internal consistency and strong correlation with other instruments. The reliability can be considered substantial. The NPQ has low accuracy in discriminating between subjects with or without PPPD.

Persian version of the Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire and Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form: psychometric properties in Iranian chronic stroke survivors

BACKGROUND

Post-stroke fatigue is a disturbing condition with various physical and psychological facets, which needs to be assessed by meaningful and psychometrically valid and reliable tools. The Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ) and Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form (MFSI-SF) have been designed to assess diverse dimensions of fatigue.

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the CFQ and MFSI-SF in people with chronic stroke.

METHODS

Both measures were translated according to forward-backward standard protocol. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 130 first-time stroke survivors. The multidimensional fatigue inventory, checklist individual strength, fatigue assessment scale, fatigue subscale of profiles of mood state, fatigue severity scale, visual analogue scale-fatigue, beck anxiety inventory, center for epidemiologic studies of depression scale, and 36-item short-form health survey were administered in addition to the CFQ and MFSI-SF. Reliability, precision, known-groups validity, and convergent validity were examined for the CFQ and MFSI-SF.

RESULTS

The results showed an acceptable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.81-0.97) internal consistency and test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation = 0.75-0.97). The CFQ and MFSI-SF revealed good ability (P < 0.001) to differentiate chronic stroke survivors with different disability levels. Significant high correlation (P = -0.61-0.87) was found between CFQ and MFSI-SF and other fatigue scales.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study showed that the CFQ and MFSI-SF have high reliability and validity for chronic stroke survivors.

Face validity and reliability test of the Danish version of the compliance questionnaire rheumatology in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis

BACKGROUND

Supporting adherence to medication is an essential part of the treatment and care of patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The Compliance Questionnaire Rheumatology (CQR) measures adherence in rheumatic diseases through 19 items covering drug-taking behaviour to identify the reasons for adhering to treatment and the factors that contribute to suboptimal adherence. The objective of this study was to present the translation of the CQR into Danish and the face validity and reliability test.

METHODS

The CQR was translated into Danish according to international guidelines, followed by a face validity test among 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in 2009. The test-retest reliability of the Danish CQR was evaluated in 49 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in 2020 - 2021 using the standard error of the measurement (SEM) converted into the minimally detectable change (MDC) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Questionnaires were administered with a minimum of 10 days between assessments.

RESULTS

The participants in the reliability test had a mean age of 57.4 years (SD 16.1) and a mean disease duration of 1.13 years (range 2 months-2 years). The mean CQR score in the test and retest was 62.7 (confidence interval (CI) 58.8; 66.6) and 62.5 (CI 58.9; 66.1), respectively, with a SEM of 8.59 (7.16; 10.73) and an MDC of 16.83. A satisfactory test-retest reliability was confirmed by an ICC value of 0.79 (CI 0.68; 0.89).

CONCLUSION

The Danish CQR has satisfactory test-retest reliability in patients newly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and is considered a reliable tool to measure adherence in this group.

The Quality of Life after Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis in 118 Lower Limb Lymphedema Patients

Background  This is a prospective study on 118 patients who underwent lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) due to secondary lower limb lymphedema between January 2018 and October 2020 to evaluate patients' quality of life (QOL) using the Quality of Life Measure for Limb Lymphedema (LYMQoL) questionnaire. Methods  The outcome measurement included the LYMQoL leg scoring system tool evaluating the function, appearance, symptom, mood, and overall outcome. In addition, correlation analysis was performed for three factors: based on International Society of Lymphology (ISL) stages, disease duration, and amount of volume reduction. Results  The LYMQoL tool overall satisfaction score significantly increased at all intervals from 4.4 ± 0.2 preoperative to 6.5 ± 0.3 postoperative at 12 months ( p  < 0.001). Significant findings were seen for each domain scores compared preoperatively and at 12 months: function score (18.6 ± 0.5 to 15.4 ± 0.6), appearance score (17.8 ± 0.5 to 16.0 ± 0.6), symptom score (11.8 ± 0.3 to 8.9 ± 0.4), and mood score (14.5 ± 0.4 to 11.4 ± 0.5; p  < 0.05). The correlation analysis between improvement of the overall score and the ISL stage ( p  = 0.610, correlation coefficient [ r ] = - 0.047), disease duration ( p  = 0.659, r  = - 0.041), and amount of limb volume reduction ( p  = 0.454, r  = - 0.070) showed no statistical significance. Conclusion  The QOL of secondary lower limb lymphedema patients was significantly improved after LVA regardless of the severity of disease, duration of disease, and amount of volume reduction after LVA. Understanding the patient-reported outcome measurement will help the surgeons to manage and guide the expectations of the patients.

Psychometric properties of a Creole version of Medical Outcome Study - Short Form 36 among type II diabetes patients on Reunion Island

Introduction

Health quality of life assessment is particularly important to measure the impact of chronic diseases. The aims of this study were to provide a cross-culturally adapted Creole-translation of the Medical Outcome Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and to assess psychometric performance of the Creole and French versions of the SF-36 among patients with type II diabetes in Reunion Island.

Materials and methods

The Creole translation and cross-cultural adaptation processes were based on the International Quality Of Life Assessment (IQOLA) methods. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent and discriminant validity using Multi-Trait-Multi-Method analysis and structural validity using exploratory factor analysis of the SF-36 for both versions were performed.

Results

In the Creole version of the SF-36, Cronbach's alpha exceeded 0.70 for all subscales except general health. In the French SF-36, Cronbach's alpha exceeded 0.70 on all subscales except general health and bodily pain. In the Creole SF-36, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for reproducibility was suboptimal. Multi-trait multi-method analysis showed that item-scale correlation exceeded 0.4 for all items except two general health items of the Creole SF-36 and one of the French SF-36. Factor analysis of 2 versions showed that the physical functioning, vitality, and mental health were each divided into two subscales.

Discussion

Overall, our findings provided evidence that the SF-36 is adapted to Reunion Island in both Creole and French versions. However, further research could be conducted to investigate French-Creole differences in perceived health status and a cultural adaptation of the French version will be considered.

Are Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Distal Radius Fractures Validated for Spanish and Culture? A Systematic Review

PURPOSE

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are used commonly to assess function to direct treatment and evaluate outcomes for patients with distal radius fractures. Most PROMs have been developed and validated in English with minimal report of the demographics of patients studied. The validity of applying these PROMs among Spanish-speaking patients is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality and psychometric properties of Spanish-language adaptations of PROMs for distal radius fractures.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic review to identify published studies of adaptations of Spanish-language PROMs evaluating patients with distal radius fractures. We evaluated the methodologic quality of the adaptation and validation using Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures, Quality Criteria for Psychometric Properties of Health Status Questionnaire, and the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments Checklist for Cross-Cultural Validity. The level of evidence was evaluated based upon prior methodology.

RESULTS

Five instruments reported in eight studies were included: the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), Disability of Arm Shoulder and Hand, Upper Limb Functional Index, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale, and Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment. The PRWE was the most frequently included PROM. No study followed all six processes for adaptation or assessed all measurement properties. No study demonstrated the completion of more than eight of the 14 aspects of cross-cultural validity. The PRWE had moderate evidence to support half of the domains of measurement properties evaluating the level of evidence.

CONCLUSIONS

None of the five instruments identified received a good rating on all three checklists. Only the PWRE demonstrated moderate evidence on half of the measurement domains.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Given the lack of strong evidence to support the quality of these instruments, we recommend adaptation and testing of PROMs for this population before use. Currently, PROMs in Spanish-speaking patients should be used with caution so as not to perpetuate health care disparities.

Validity and reliability of the Sinhalese version of the perceived stress scale questionnaire among Sri Lankans

Introduction

Despite the availability of validated psychometrics tools to assess depression, there has not been any validated and reliable tool established to test perceived stress among Sri Lankans. The objective of this study is to test the validity and reliability of the Sinhalese Version of the Sheldon Cohen Perceived Stress Scale.

Materials and methods

Standard and systematic procedures were adopted to translate the original English version of the Perceived Stress Scale-10 questionnaire into Sinhalese. Consecutive sampling was employed to recruit the Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) sample (n = 321), and a convenient sampling was used to recruit the Age and Sex matched Healthy Controls (ASMHC) (n = 101) and the Healthy Community Controls (HCC) groups (n = 75). Cronbach alpha was used to assess internal consistency and reliability was determined using test-retest method utilizing Spearman's correlation coefficient. Sensitivity was evaluated by comparing the mean scores of the Sinhalese Perceived Stress Scale (S-PSS-10) and Sinhalese Patient Health Questionnaire (S-PHQ-9) scores. Post-hoc comparisons were done using Bonferroni's method. Mean scores were compared between the T2DM, ASMHC, and HCC groups using the independent t-test. Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted using the principal component and Varimax rotation while the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed to assess the goodness-of-fit of the factor structure extracted from the EFA. Concurrent validity was assessed using the Pearson correlation between the S-PSS-10 and Patient Health Questionnaire measured by S-PHQ-9 (p < 0.05).

Results

Cronbach alpha values of the three groups T2DM, ASMHC and HCC were 0.85, 0.81, and 0.79, respectively. Results of the ANOVA test suggested that there was a significant difference in the mean scores between groups (p < 0.00). EFA analysis revealed the existence of two factors with eigenvalues greater than 1.0. The factor loadings for the items ranged from 0.71-0.83. The CFA analysis demonstrated a good model fit for the two-factor model S-PSS-10. The S-PSS-10 significantly correlated with S-PHQ-9, indicating an acceptable concurrent validity.

Conclusion

Findings revealed that the S-PSS-10 questionnaire can be used to screen perceived stress among the majority of the Sri Lankan Sinhalese-speaking population specially with chronic illnesses. Further studies with higher sample sizes across different populations would enhance the validity and reliability of S-PSS-10.

Quality of life assessment in diabetic patients: validity of the creole version of the EQ-5D-5L in Reunion Island

Introduction

Due to the high prevalence of diabetes and its complications, evaluating the patient's quality of life is critical. EQ-5D-5L is a valid tool for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in chronic diseases, including diabetes. However, no psychometric measures have been validated in a Creole-speaking population. Therefore, this study aimed for the first time to validate and cross-culturally adapt Creole and French versions of EQ-5D-5L on Type II diabetes patients in Reunion Island.

Materials and methods

The Creole translation and cross-cultural adaptation process were based on the EUROQOL methods. Internal consistency and construct validity were determined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of EQ-5D-5L for both versions. CFA model for HRQOL and global fit measures were calculated based on the EQ-5D-5L items using the maximum likelihood (ML) method.

Results

From November 2016 to October 2017, 148 patients were included in the Creole group and 152 in the French group. EQ-5D-5L measures were unidimensional for both versions. Cronbach's coefficient alpha was 0.76 for the Creole version and 0.81 for the French version in CFA models. The root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) was 0.06 for the Creole version and 0.02 for the French version. The Comparative Fit Index (CFI) was closer to 1 for both versions. CFA models for both the Creole and French versions fit the data adequately.

Discussion

Overall, our findings provided evidence that both the Creole and French versions of EQ-5D-5L are suitable for assessing HRQOL in diabetes patients in Reunion Island. However, further research could be done to investigate French-Creole differences concerning the perception of health status, and a cultural adaptation of the French version will be considered.

Validation of the Turkish translation of the low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) score

BACKGROUND

Long-term bowel dysfunction after resection for rectal cancer, known as low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), is observed in many patients. The LARS score was developed to assess this syndrome and its impact on the quality of life in Danish patients. Recently versions in English and many other languages have been validated. The aim of this study was to validate the Turkish translation of the LARS score in patients who have undergone treatment for rectal cancer.

METHODS

Rectal cancer patients who underwent low anterior resection in May 2000- May 2018 in three Turkish centers received the LARS score questionnaire, the European Organisation for Research and Treatment Of Cancer Core Quality of Life questionnaire [Ed.11] (EORTC QLQ-C30), and a single ad hoc quality of life question. The test-retest reliability of the LARS score was evaluated by asking a randomly selected subgroup of patients to repeat the assessment of the LARS score 2 to 4 weeks after their initial response.

RESULTS

A total of 326 patients were reviewed and contacted for the study, and 222 (68%) were eligible for the analyses (129 males, 93 females, median age 64 years [range:24-87 years, IQR = 14]) There was a strong association between the LARS score and quality of life (p < 0.01) and the test-retest reliability was high. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.78 (95% CI 0.73-0.83) for the whole study group and 0.79 (95% CI 0.68-0.87) for the subgroup, indicating strong reliability.

CONCLUSIONS

The Turkish translation of the LARS score has psychometric properties comparable with previously published results in similar studies. The Turkish version of the LARS score can be considered a valid and reliable tool for measuring LARS in Turkish rectal cancer patients.

Effectiveness of family support health education intervention to improve health-related quality of life among pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Melaka, Malaysia

BACKGROUND

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) is an important public health problem in Malaysia. In this country, limited research has been carried out on the impact of the disease on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Family support interventions had been shown to be effective in improving the PTB treatment outcomes.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a newly developed Family Support Health Education (FASTEN) intervention in improving the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among PTB patients in Melaka, as compared to the current conventional disease management.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A single-blinded, randomized controlled field trial study design was conducted in Melaka from September 2019 until August 2021, involving newly diagnosed PTB patients. The participants were randomized either into the intervention group (FASTEN intervention) or into the control group (conventional management). They were interviewed by using a validated questionnaire that includes the Short Form 36 Health Survey version 2 (SF-36v2), at three time points: at diagnosis, two months and six months after diagnosis. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows version 24. The Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) analysis was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, in terms of the HRQoL score difference between the groups, adjusted for baseline covariates.

RESULTS

The HRQoL among PTB patients was lower than the HRQoL of general Malaysian population. Among the total 88 respondents, the three lowest HRQoL domains scores at baseline were Social Functioning (SF), Role limitation due to Physical condition (RP) and Vitality (VT) with the median (IQR) scores of 27.26 (10.03), 30.21 (11.23) and 34.77 (8.92) respectively. The median (IQR) for Physical Component Score (PCS) was 43.58 (7.44) and for Mental Component Score (MCS) was 40.71 (8.77). There were significant difference in the HRQoL median scores between the intervention group compared to the control group, as the Physical Functioning (PF) (p = 0.018), RP (p < 0.001), General Health (GH) (p < 0.001), VT (p < 0.001), SF (p < 0.001), Role limitation due to Emotional condition (RE) (p < 0.001), General Mental Health (MH) (p < 0.001), and the MCS (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The FASTEN intervention is effective to improve the overall HRQoL among PTB patients, as the HRQoL scores were significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group who received conventional management. Therefore, it is recommended that the TB program should incorporate the involvement of family members in the patient's management.

Quality of Life Perception among Portuguese Celiac Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the Celiac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ)

The aim of this study is to assess Portuguese celiac patients' quality of life (QoL) perception. A cross-sectional study was performed with a non-probability convenience sample of Portuguese celiac patients using an online self-administered celiac disease quality of life questionnaire (CDQ), previously validated for the Portuguese population. The final sample comprised 234 celiac patients, which included the following: primarily women (69.2%); aged between 18 and 49 years old (56.4%); with a partner (60.6%); with a high educational level (58.9%-graduated or post-graduated); following a gluten-free diet (GFD) (55.1%); and not using antidepressants (93.1%). The Portuguese CDQ presented good reliability and responsiveness in this sample of Portuguese celiac patients. In general, the CDQ in Portugal was affected by age at diagnosis (p = 0.017), educational level (p = 0.005), and compliance with GFD (p = 0.034). The emotion domain was affected only by using antidepressants (p = 0.036). The social domain was affected by gender (females had lower rates, p = 0.016), age at diagnosis (p = 0.009), educational level (p = 0.000), and compliance with a GFD (p = 0.002). The worries domain did not differ according to socioeconomic data. The symptoms domain was affected by compliance with GFD (p = 0.000), age at diagnosis (p = 0.000), and educational level (p = 0.014). Data on celiac QoL is essential to support the formulation and implementation of strategies to minimize the issues suffered by celiac patients, lowering their physical, emotional, and social burden. Additionally, data on Portuguese celiac disease patients using the CDQ will allow future comparative research among celiac populations from different countries.

Italian translation and validation of the Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire-8 (CLDEQ-8)

PURPOSE

To translate and validate an Italian version of the CLDEQ-8 (CLDEQ-8_IT).

METHODS

The study was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, a cross-cultural adaptation of CLDEQ-8 to Italian was performed by forward and backward translation in sequence. In the second phase, a multi-centre study was conducted for the validation of the questionnaire. Validity CLDEQ-8_IT was evaluated against three gestalt questions: overall opinion of soft contact lenses (CLs), global self-assessments of eye sensitivity and eye dryness. Reliability was evaluated by test-retest assessment in a subgroup of subjects. Finally, the psychometric properties of CLDEQ-8_IT were explored by Rasch analysis.

RESULTS

Two hundred and forty soft CL wearers, fluent Italian speakers (73 males and 167 females), between 18 and 70 years of age were enrolled. A significant correlation was found between CLDEQ-8_IT and each of the three Gestalt questions. The cutoff score of 12 points demonstrated the best balance between sensitivity and specificity in differentiating wearers grading their CLs as "Excellent/Very good" from those reporting their overall opinion as "Good/Fair/Poor". The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient between test and retest was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.81-0.92). Finally, infit and outfit statistics using Rasch analysis for the 8 items were in a good range, however Principal Components Analysis revealed a certain degree of multi-dimensionality of the instrument. Also, item 8 analysis could be computed after merging the last two response categories.

CONCLUSION

The CLDEQ-8_IT showed very good validity and reliability in measuring symptoms of CL wearers, comparable to the original English language version. A cut-off of 12 was confirmed as yielding the best balance between sensitivity and specificity in detecting CL wearers who could benefit from clinical management of their CL-related symptoms. Collapsing of the response options 5 and 6 in the last item of questionnaire could optimise its functioning.

Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Greek Version of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (CRBS-GR): What Are the Barriers in South-East Europe?

Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a secondary prevention intervention proven to improve quality of life, yet with low participation. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (CRBS) was developed to assess multi-level barriers to participation. This study aimed at the translation, and cross-cultural adaptation of the CRBS into the Greek language (CRBS-GR), followed by psychometric validation. Some 110 post-angioplasty patients with coronary artery disease (88.2% men, age 65.3 ± 10.2 years) answered the CRBS-GR. Factor analysis was performed to obtain the CRBS-GR subscales/factors. The internal consistency and 3-week test-retest reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha (α) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Construct validity was tested via convergent and divergent validity. Concurrent validity was assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Translation and adaptation resulted in 21 items similar to the original version. Face validity and acceptability were supported. Construct validity assessment revealed four subscales/factors, with acceptable overall reliability (α = 0.70) and subscale internal consistency for all but one factor (α range = 0.56-0.74). The 3-week test-retest reliability was 0.96. Concurrent validity assessment demonstrated a small to moderate correlation of the CRBS-GR with the HADS. The greatest barriers were the distance from the rehabilitation center, the costs, the lack of information about CR, and already exercising at home. The CRBS-GR is a reliable and valid tool for identifying CR barriers among Greek-speaking patients.

Psychometric properties and validity of the Menopause Rating Scale in postmenopausal Portuguese women

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study is to analyze the reliability and validity of the Portuguese version of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) among postmenopausal Portuguese women.

METHODS

A total of 184 postmenopausal women completed the Portuguese MRS. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were studied. Construct, convergent, and concurrent validity were assessed. The 10-item Cervantes Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to determine convergent and concurrent validity, respectively. The ability and accuracy of the Portuguese MRS to discriminate between women with and without anxiety and depression cases were evaluated, and a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used.

RESULTS

The Portuguese MRS showed an appropriate level of internal consistency (Cronbach α, 0.84 for MRS total score) and test-retest reliability (MRS total score; intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.92; 95% confidence interval, 0.85-0.96). Factor analysis (construct validity) revealed a 3-factor structure (explained variance of 62.08%). The MRS total score and its 3 factors showed good convergent (10-item Cervantes Scale) and concurrent (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale anxiety and depression) validity (all P < 0.001). The Portuguese MRS total score was significantly able to discriminate between postmenopausal women with and without anxiety (P < 0.001) and depression (P = 0.001), with a cutoff point of 15.50 (80.00% sensitivity and 63.70% specificity) for detecting depression and a cutoff point of 16.50 (82.35% sensitivity and 78.57% specificity) for identifying anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS

The Portuguese MRS has been shown to be a valid and reliable questionnaire for assessing the severity of menopausal symptoms and discriminating among postmenopausal women with and without anxiety and depression.

Psychometric properties of Persian version of wound-QOL questionnaire among older adults suffering from chronic wounds

Background

Patients with chronic wounds experience various biopsychosocial problems which severely affects their quality of life (QoL). Thus, a Persian instrument to assess the QoL of these patients is required. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the wound-QOL questionnaire.

Methods

This methodological study was performed on Iranian patients during 2021-2022. The translation was carried out via forward-backward method. Face validity was addressed with 10 patients and content validity with 12 wound specialists. Construct validity was also assessed by performing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 100) and convergent validation with EQ-5D-3L plus Pain VAS Score and known-groups validity. The reliability was assessed by internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and test-retest.

Results

A total of 100 patients with chronic wounds were included in the study. Two factors with cumulative variance of 65.39% were extracted during EFA. The results revealed a significant and high correlation between the total scores of wound-QOL questionnaire, the Persian version of EQ-5D-3L (p = 0.000, r = 0.502), and Pain score (0-10; p = 0.000, r = 0.627). The Cronbach's alpha was 0.743 and stability of the questionnaire (α = 0.872) was confirmed. In confirming the known-groups validity, the results showed that this tool can differentiate the QOL of patients with different wounds.

Conclusion

The Persian version of the wound-QOL questionnaire is a valid and reliable questionnaire which can measure the QoL of patients with chronic wounds. This instrument can be used in clinical evaluation as well as research purposes across the Iranian population.

The Spanish Version of the International Index of Erectile Function: Adaptation and Validation

BACKGROUND

The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) is a widely employed questionnaire in urology to assess erectile dysfunction (ED) in both clinical research and practice.

OBJECTIVE

To translate and culturally adapt the Spanish version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and to analyze its psychometric properties in Spanish men with erectile dysfunction (ED).

METHODS

Firstly, direct and reverse translations were performed. Secondly, a pilot study was carried out on 23 patients with the lowest possible education level without being illiterate. Finally, 170 participants completed the IIEF. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity (exploratory factor analysis) were assessed. Concurrent and divergent validity were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), respectively. Discriminant validity (with and without anxiety or depression) was calculated using a receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis.

RESULTS

High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.968, total score) and moderate-to-excellent test-retest reliability were found. The factor analysis showed a two-factor structure (explained variance of 77.34%). Significant correlations of the IIEF total score (p < 0.01) and domains (p < 0.05) with HADS anxiety and depression scores were observed (concurrent validity), while non-significant correlations with SF-12 physical and mental summary scores were found (divergent validity). The IIEF total score could discriminate between participants with and without anxiety (p < 0.05) and depression (p < 0.01), with an optimal cut-off point of <39.50 for both anxiety (48.30% sensitivity and 78.75% specificity) and depression (50.00% sensitivity and 81.01% specificity).

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

The psychometric properties of the IIEF have not been analyzed in Spanish people to date. Strengths and Limitations: The Spanish version of the IIEF was shown to be capable of discriminating between men with erectile dysfunction with and without depression or anxiety. There are some limitations to this study that should be noted. It was conducted on Spanish participants, and, thus, it should be employed with caution in other Spanish-speaking countries. This study was carried out on a selected population, and, therefore, the generalizability of its results to other populations might be limited. Moreover, a large majority of the participants (89.41%) had secondary or higher education. Future studies should be performed on a more general population with a varied geographical and educational background.

CONCLUSIONS

The Spanish IIEF is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing erectile function among Spanish men with ED.

Translation, reliability and validity of Persian version of Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile in dementia

Our study aimed at the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP). This study was conducted on 130 people with dementia as well as 77 healthy elderlies. After translating the AASP into Persian, its content validity was determined based on 9 experts working in the same field. Cronbach's alpha and the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated to assess the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the Persian version of AASP. The two groups of people with dementia and healthy elderlies were compared in terms of scores in the four quadrants by performing an Independent t-test. All items in the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) received an acceptable score. The Cronbach's alpha score for different parts of AASP was also calculated (α between 0.894 and 0.916; p < 0.001). The test-retest reliability of sub-tests of AASP was excellent (ICC between 0.885 and 0.948; p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the healthy Elderlies and dementia persons for low registration, sensory avoiding quadrants (p < 0.05). The Persian version of the AASP questionnaire is a reliable and valid questionnaire for people with dementia in Iran.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of the 47-item Mobility Questionnaire in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a developmental-neurological disorder that is common in children. As children with CP have several problems and limitations regarding locomotion and mobility, accessing an assessment tool for measuring mobility is crucial. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the 47-item mobility questionnaire in Iranian children with cerebral palsy between 6 and 12 years of age in Tehran, Iran September 2019. Methods: In this psychometric study, 202 participants (84 girls and 118 boys, with a mean age of 95.92 months ± 23.73), 15 parents, and nine occupational therapists participated. A multistage sampling method was used. Content, construct, convergent, and face validity were estimated. Internal validity and test-retest reliability were studied, too. The convergent validity of MobQ was studied according to the gross motor functions classification scale (GMFCS). Results: The results showed that all items of the 47-item mobility questionnaire had a content validity higher than the minimum acceptable value (0.78 for CVR and 0.79 for CVI). Further, based on the opinions of 9 experts and 15 persons completing the questionnaire, an understandable and unambiguous questionnaire was reported regarding face validity. The evaluation of the intragroup correlation coefficient's reliability in this study also showed that ICC was 0.998 and Cronbach's alpha coefficient value was 0.996. A Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.937 was obtained to assess the convergent validity of the Persian version of the "Mobility Questionnaire" and the Gross Motor Skills Classification Scale. Conclusions: The results of this study, therefore, showed that the Persian version of the 47-item mobility questionnaire had good psychometric characteristics for children with CP between 6 and 12 years of age. Therefore, this questionnaire can be suitable for measuring children's mobility in research and clinical studies.

Mapping the availability of translated versions of posttraumatic stress disorder screening questionnaires for adults: A scoping review

Background: The most used questionnaires for PTSD screening in adults were developed in English. Although many of these questionnaires were translated into other languages, the procedures used to translate them and to evaluate their reliability and validity have not been consistently documented. This comprehensive scoping review aimed to compile the currently available translated and evaluated questionnaires used for PTSD screening, and highlight important gaps in the literature.Objective: This review aimed to map the availability of translated and evaluated screening questionnaires for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for adults.Methods: All peer-reviewed studies in which a PTSD screening questionnaire for adults was translated, and which reported at least one result of a qualitative and /or quantitative evaluation procedure were included. The literature was searched using Embase, MEDLINE, and APA PsycInfo, citation searches and contributions from study team members. There were no restrictions regarding the target languages of the translations. Data on the translation procedure, the qualitative evaluation, the quantitative evaluation (dimensionality of the questionnaire, reliability, and performance), and open access were extracted.Results: A total of 866 studies were screened, of which 126 were included. Collectively, 128 translations of 12 different questionnaires were found. Out of these, 105 (83.3%) studies used a forward and backward translation procedure, 120 (95.2%) assessed the reliability of the translated questionnaire, 60 (47.6%) the dimensionality, 49 (38.9%) the performance, and 42 (33.3%) used qualitative evaluation procedures. Thirty-four questionnaires (27.0%) were either freely available or accessible on request.Conclusions: The analyses conducted and the description of the methods and results varied substantially, making a quality assessment impractical. Translations into languages spoken in middle- or low-income countries were underrepresented. In addition, only a small proportion of all translated questionnaires were available. Given the need for freely accessible translations, an online repository was developed.HIGHLIGHTS We mapped the availability of translated PTSD screening questionnaires.The quality of the translation and validation processes is very heterogenous.We created a repository for translated, validated PTSD screening questionnaires.

Quality of life of Moroccan patients with celiac disease: Arabic translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the celiac disease questionnaire

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS

Celiac disease (CD) management is based on a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) that affects the quality of life (QoL) of patients with CD. Specific instruments have been used to evaluate this QoL, such as the CD-Questionnaire (CD-Q). This study aimed to translate, validate, and cross-culturally adapt the CD-Q in an Arabic version and then apply it to evaluate the QoL of Moroccan adult patients with CD.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The Moroccan version of the CD-Q (M-CD-Q) was administered to 150 patients with CD, and 112 of them completed it. The reproducibility and reliability of the M-CD-Q were studied by the intraclass coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's α, respectively. Parametric and nonparametric tests, confirmatory factor analysis, and Spearman correlation were used for the statistical analysis performed by SPSS, and the goodness-of-fit test was determined using SPSS AMOS.

RESULTS

No difficulties were found during the translation and cultural adaptation of the CD-Q. Cronbach's α showed good internal consistency. The retest showed excellent reproducibility (ICC > 0.4). The study of the psychometric properties of the M-CD-Q showed good acceptance, zero ceiling effect, and floor effect. The model fit was good [(root mean square error of approximation = 0.075 (<0.08) and χ2 = 509.04, p < 0.001]. The total scores showed a neutral QoL. This QoL was worse in the worries subscale, which is related to gluten-free products. The GFD did not improve the QoL of the examined samples.

CONCLUSION

The M-CD-Q is the first reliable and adapted instrument in an Arab country for the evaluation of QoL in patients with CD. CD negatively influences this QoL, especially items related to gluten-free products.

Translation and validation of convergence insufficiency symptom survey to Italian: Psychometric results

PURPOSE

This study aimed to translate the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) into the Italian language and assess psychometric properties of the translated questionnaire (CISS_I).

METHODS

The CISS_I was arranged according to guidelines for a comprehensive multistep methodologic process for translating, adapting, and validating psychometric instruments in health care research. The CISS_I questionnaire was administered to 103 volunteers (21.8 ± 2.2 years), students in higher education, at two different times. A complete optometric evaluation was performed including subjective refraction, best corrected visual acuity, near point of convergence, prism fusional ranges to blur, diplopia and recovery, TNO stereo test and prism cover test for measurement of heterophoria.

RESULTS

The performance of the CISS_I in terms of validity showed some points of weakness. Sensitivity was 42%, specificity was 74%, positive predictive value was 27% and negative predictive value was 85%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.672. On the contrary, the results showed good internal consistency of the CISS_I (Cronbach's alpha - α=0.89) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.92). Rasch analysis showed good model fit (all items, except one, with infit and outfit mean square between 0.7 and 1.3), good measurement precision (person separation = 2.66) and good targeting -0,81 logits but also some evidence of multidimensionality.

CONCLUSIONS

The CISS_I showed some point of weakness in terms of validity but also good psychometric properties and has been shown to be applicable to an Italian speaking population to quantify the visual discomfort associated with near vision in higher education students. The results show that high CISS_I score is not necessarily linked to convergence insufficiency, while low scores can exclude the presence of this anomaly. The CISS_I can help in interpreting and monitoring convergence insufficiency symptoms in already identified subjects, but it is not suitable for screening a general population of young adults.

Translation and evaluation of the simplified Chinese version of the rating form of IBD patient concerns

Background

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has become a global public health problem. The prevalence of IBD in China increased annually in past two decades.

Methods

This study was to translate and validate the rating form of IBD patients' concerns (RFIPC), and to describe disease-related worries and concerns of patients with IBD. The simplified Chinese version of the RFIPC was developed according to translation and back-translation procedure. Patients with IBD were consecutively enrolled from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. The participants were assessed using the RFIPC and the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ). Internal consistency, test–retest reliability, measurement error, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and correlation of the RFIPC with the SIBDQ were performed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the RFIPC.

Results

A total of 116 patients with IBD, 73 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 43 with Crohn’s disease (CD), were enrolled in this study. Thirty-seven of them recompleted the questionnaires for the second time between 7 and 14 days after the first interview. The results of CFA indicated the original structure of the RFIPC was reasonable. Cronbach's alpha value of the RFIPC were 0.97. The intraclass correlation coefficients of four domains ranged from 0.85 to 0.92. The standard error of measurement was 7.10. The correlation coefficients between total score of the RFIPC and the SIBDQ score ranged from − 0.54 to − 0.70. Median total score of the RFIPC was 39.4 (IQR 24.0–59.3). Patients with severe symptoms reported higher scores of the RFIPC. The uncertain nature of disease, having surgery, having an ostomy bag, developing cancer, feeling out of control, being a burden on others and financial difficulties were highest concerns of patients with IBD. Comparing with patients with UC, patients with CD had more concerns of the ability to have children and being treated as different (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

The simplified Chinese version of RFIPC is a valid and reliable tool. It could be used for assessing disease-related worries and concerns of patients with IBD in China. Specific concerns of patients with UC and CD are different, therefore, health workers should consider the specific needs of UC and CD patients.

Comparison of mobile phone usage and physical activity on glycemic status, body composition & lifestyle in male Saudi mobile phone users

Background

&Objectives: This study aimed to compare the effects of mobile phone usage and physical activity on HbA1c, body composition, and lifestyle among male Saudi Arabian mobile phone users.

Methods

The study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 2020 to July 2021. The study sample consisted of 203 non-smoker male Saudi participants aged from 20 to 60 years who used mobile phones. Personal information was obtained through interviews using a proforma. The participants were divided into three groups according to their daily mobile phone usage: Group (1): less than 2 h, Group (2): 2–3 h, and Group (3): more than 3 h, and according to their physical activities: Group (1): sedentary, Group (2): average, and Group (3): athletes. Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c), Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), and (SF) 36- items survey was performed.

Results

The mean age of 203 Saudi male adult participants was 28.0 ± 10.4 years. Mobile phone usage in the less than 2 h group was (33.5%), between 2-3 h (22.7%), and more than 3 h (43.8%) respectively. The mean age of Group (3), who used mobile phones for more than 3 h, was the lowest (23.9 ± 5.7). The results showed that HbA1C levels were almost equal in all three groups (5.8 ± 0.4, 5.7 ± 0.4, and 5.7 ± 0.3 respectively). In addition, emotional well-being and social functioning showed insignificant decreases in the more than 3 h group compared to other groups of mobile phone usage (69.3 ± 15.7, 70.9 ± 15.5, 65.2 ± 16.0, p = .091 and 82.9 ± 201, 81.2 ± 18.7, 77.6 ± 21.6, p = .267) respectively. No effect was detected between groups regarding various body compositions. Regarding physical activity classifications: the sedentary group constituted (36%) of the sample, whereas the average and athlete groups represented (53.7%) and (10.3%) of the total sample respectively. There was a significant decrease in BMI (29.6 ± 7.8, 25.3 ± 5.1,24.7 ± 5.6, p = .000), fat mass (24.7 ± 15.0, 17.1 ± 9.1, 15.3 ± 10.6, p = .000), and free fat mass (64.0 ± 10.2, 56.8 ± 8.7, 57.5 ± 8.0, p = .000) in the average and the athletic groups compared to the sedentary group. No significant difference was found in HbA1c between physical activity groups (5.8 ± 0.4, 5.7 ± 0.4, 5.7 ± 0.4, p = .218).

Conclusions

Mobile phone usage does not affect HbA1c and body composition parameters. Furthermore, we found the youngers used mobile phones longer than others. Insignificant decrease in emotional well-being and social functioning parameters of the style of life due to long mobile phone usage which needs more attention.

Cross-cultural validity of the WHO-5 Well-Being Index and Euthymia Scale: A clinimetric analysis

BACKGROUND

The assessment of psychological well-being and euthymia represents an emerging issue in clinical psychology and psychiatry. Rating scales and indices such as the 5-item version of the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) and the Euthymia Scale (ES) were developed but insufficient attention has been devoted to the evaluation of their cross-cultural validity. This is the first study using Clinimetric Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (CLIPROM) criteria to assess cross-cultural validity and sensitivity of five different versions of the WHO-5 and ES.

METHODS

A multicenter cross-sectional study involving a total of 3762 adult participants from different European (i.e., Italy, Poland, Denmark) and non-European (i.e., China, Japan) countries was conducted. Item Response Theory models (Mokken and Rasch analyses) were applied.

RESULTS

Mokken coefficients of scalability were found to range from 0.42 to 0.84. The majority of the versions of the WHO-5 fitted the Rasch model expectations. Paired t-tests revealed that the Italian and Danish WHO-5 versions were unidimensional. Person Separation Reliability indices showed that the Polish, Danish, and Japanese ES versions could reliably discriminate between subjects with different levels of euthymia.

LIMITATIONS

A convenience sampling was used, thus limiting the generalizability of study findings. In addition, no measures of negative mental health were administered.

CONCLUSIONS

WHO-5 can be used in international studies for cross-cultural comparisons since it covers transcultural components of subjective well-being. Findings also suggest that the ES can be used as a cross-cultural screening tool since it entailed the clinimetric property of sensitivity.

The Short Health Scale: A Valid and Reliable Quality-of-Life Scale for Mainland Chinese Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Background:

The aim of our study was to translate and validate the mainland Chinese version of the short health scale (SHS), a disease-specific quality-of-life (QoL) scale for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Methods:

The SHS was translated and validated according to the standard process: a translation and back-translation procedure and a reliability and validation study. Patients with IBD were enrolled, and their QoL was assessed using the SHS, the short inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (SIBDQ), and the Bristol stool form scale. Reliability (internal consistency reliability, split-half reliability, and test–retest reliability) and validity analyses were performed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the SHS. The impacts of different severity of major symptoms on QoL were analyzed by comparing the scores of SHS.

Results:

A total of 112 patients with IBD (69 with ulcerative colitis and 43 with Crohn's disease) completed the mainland Chinese version of the SHS, and 34 patients completed the SHS a second time within one to two weeks. Cronbach's alpha value of the SHS was 0.90, and its split-half coefficient was 0.83. Intraclass correlation coefficients of the four items ranged from 0.52 to 0.72. All four items of the SHS were significantly associated with the corresponding domains of the SIBDQ, with correlation coefficients ranging from −0.52 to −0.69 (p < 0.001). The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit of the one-factor model, with comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.878, normed fit index (NFI) = 0.874, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.880, and goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.842. The patients with severe symptoms had higher scores in the SHS than those with no or mild symptoms.

Conclusions:

The SHS was simple and quick to be used. The SHS had good validity and reliability and was suitable for evaluating the QoL of patients with IBD in mainland China.

The Assessment of Cooking Skills and Food Skills and Their Relationship with Nutrition Knowledge, Attitude toward a Healthy Diet and Food Intake: Results of a German Validation Study

There is a lack of validated assessment instruments that capture all facets of cooking skills (CS) and food skills (FS). The goal of this study was to validate the German version of a questionnaire to assess a broad range of CS and FS and to examine its relationship with nutrition knowledge, attitude toward a healthy diet, and food intake. The German version was developed using forward−backward translation. An online survey was completed by students (n = 141), participants from the general Swiss population (n = 50), and nutrition experts (n = 18), including the CS and FS items along with nutrition knowledge, food frequency items, attitude toward a healthy diet and sociodemographic variables. The reliability and construct validity were examined. Results: For all of the samples, Cronbach’s alpha was between 0.85 and 0.88 for CS items and between 0.84 and 0.86 for FS items. The scales were strongly correlated (r = 0.60−0.77, p < 0.01). Nutrition experts showed higher confidence in their CS and FS than students and the participants of the general Swiss population (p < 0.001). CS and FS correlated weakly to moderately with practical nutrition knowledge, attitude toward a healthy diet, and the diet quality index. The German version is an efficient, valid, and highly reliable instrument that seems sensitive to changes. FS, compared to CS, might be more important for a healthy diet.

(Dis)trust in doctors and public and private healthcare institutions in the Western Balkans

Introduction

Considering the geopolitical changes in the six Western Balkan countries—Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia—over the last three decades, particularly as it concerns the progress and changes in the healthcare systems, we argue that there is a need for a detailed analysis of people's trust in those healthcare systems and healthcare providers.

Methods

In this cross‐sectional, intercountry study, we examine the trust trends of Western Balkans citizens in medical doctors and public and private healthcare institutions from 25 July 2021 to 30 October 2021, with 3789 participants using a self‐reported questionnaire, and Google Forms. Snowball sampling is used to collect data from six Western Balkans countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Findings

The primary findings of our study show that citizens in the Western Balkans have a low level of trust in their healthcare system (X̄ = 4.3/10). Medical doctors working in private healthcare institutions, on the other hand, are afforded a higher level of trust (X̄ = 6.6/10) than those working in public healthcare institutions (X̄ = 5.7/10). In the event that they or their family members need to visit a health institution, half of the study participants would choose private healthcare institutions over public ones. We found a statistically significant difference between countries on the mean points from the questions concerning one's trust in the healthcare system, private healthcare institutions and medical doctors working in public and private sectors (p < .05).

Conclusion

Despite its limitations, this study is the first cross‐sectional research on the ‘trust interface’ among western Balkan citizens, revealing that they have low trust in their healthcare systems.

Public Contribution

The information in this manuscript was gathered on the level of 3789 citizens from six Western Balkan countries. Before we began collecting data, we conducted a piloting procedure with 40 citizens who were clients of health institutions to validate the data collection questionnaire.

Validation and Cultural Adaptation of the Serbian Version of the Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) in Children with Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Lesion

Background and objectives: Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) is among the most described scales developed to evaluate the physical status of children and adolescents with various musculoskeletal disorders. We aimed to translate PODCI from English to Serbian, culturally adopt items and domains, evaluate the temporal stability, internal consistency and the test−retest reliability of PODCISR in children with obstetrical brachial plexus lesion (OBPL), and finally, to test the construct validity of PODCISR against muscular manual test (MMT) Materials and Methods: The study included 48 eligible participants aged between 2 and 10 years with OBPL. The MMT was used to test the construct validity. Results: There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between test and retest for all PODCISR domains. Correlations for all tested domains with MMT were statistically significant except for biceps muscle and domains II and IV. Cronbach’s alpha value of the Global Functioning Scale was good and equaled 0.838 for test and 0.832 for retest session. Cronbach’s α was more than 0.600 for all PODCISR domains except for Domain II and for Domain IV. The observed Test−Retest ICC for all PODCISR domains scores ranged from 0.899 to 0.996. Conclusion: The Serbian version of PODCI (PODCISR) was successfully translated and transculturally adopted. It has satisfactory temporal stability, construct validity and test−retest reliability as well as relevant internal consistency.

Psychometric Properties of the "Quality of Life in Life-Threatening Illness-Family Carer Version" (QOLLTI-F) in Persian-Speaking Carers of COVID-19 Patients

Background

Measuring family caregivers' quality of life plays a significant role in improving the quality, efficiency, development, and provision of efficient services for patients with COVID-19. As a result, evaluating the quality of life requires the use of valid and reliable measures that are culturally appropriate. This study was conducted to determine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Quality of Life in Life-Threatening Illness-Family Carer Version (QOLLTI - F) in patients with COVID-19.

Methods

This methodological study was carried out in 2021 at Baqiyatallah Hospital in Tehran. After gaining approval from the tool creator, the translation was carried out utilizing the forward-backward approach. Cognitive interviews with 10 family caregivers of COVID-19 patients were used to demonstrate face validity. Moreover, construct validity was identified by performing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 251), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 200), and convergent validation using Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) questionnaire. For scale reliability, internal consistency and stability were performed using Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient and test-retest, respectively.

Results

451 family caregivers of patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in this study. Three factors with a cumulative variance of 51.85% were extracted during EFA: (1) Caregiver's physical-emotional status, (2) Satisfaction with the situation, and (3) Caregiver's concerns. CFA showed that the model enjoyed a moderate to a good fit of information (RMSEA: 0.087; NFI: 0.98; CFI: 0.91; IFI: 0.91; GFI 0.89; standardized RMR: 0.070). A significant correlation was found between the Persian version of the ZBI and participants' total scores of QOLLTI - F v3 (r = -0.196, P = 0.000). Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient = 0.719 and ICC stability reliability = 0.71 of the questionnaire were confirmed.

Conclusion

The Persian version of the QOLLTI - F v3 is a valid and reliable scale that can measure family caregivers' quality of life during a Life-Threatening illness in patients with COVID-19. This instrument may be utilized in clinical trials and research to enhance the quality of life for family carers in Iranian society.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of Palliative Care Outcome Scale (POS) in Adult Patients With Cancer

Background

Measuring the outcomes of palliative care plays an important role to improve the quality, efficiency, and availability of these services in patients with cancer. Using valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate tools has a considerable role to measure these outcomes. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the translated version of the Palliative care Outcome Scale (POS).

Methods

This methodological study was conducted in two outpatient clinics related to Shohada Tajrish and Baqiyatallah hospitals in Tehran in 2019-2020. The translation was done using the Forward-Backward approach after gaining permission from the developer. Face validity was tested with 10 patients with cancer through cognitive interviewing, as well as content validity with four experts. Construct validity was performed by (n = 203) exploratory factor analysis and confirmation (N = 150). To assess the reliability, internal consistency was assessed by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and relative stability was assessed using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Furthermore, interpretability and ceiling and floor effects were assessed.

Results

A total of 353 patients with cancer under palliative care were included in the study. Then, three psychological (30%), physical (12.25%), and social factors (12.08%) with a cumulative variance of 54.34% were extracted in exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model has a good fit of information. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for scale was 0.719. Furthermore, the ICC was 0.812. The scale was interpretable, and ceiling and floor effects were 0%.

Conclusion

Persian version of the POS was evaluated as a valid and reliable tool. Therefore, it can be used by the clinician to monitor the consequences of palliative care in Iranian cancer patients.

Randomized Trial of a Supportive Psychotherapy for Parents of Adolescents and Young Adults With Hematologic Malignancies

BACKGROUND

Cancer regularly disrupts health and developmental trajectories in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Parents have been shown to have a substantial impact on the health and cancer survivorship activities of AYA patients in the form of symptom management. However, no randomized controlled trial has evaluated a coping support intervention (CSI) program for parents of AYAs with cancer aged 18 to 40 years.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

From November 30, 2012, to August 29, 2016, parents of AYAs with hematologic malignancies were randomized in a phase III controlled trial (1:1 ratio, stratified sampling) to either the research-based CSI AYA-Parents group (CSI group; n=82) or the standard care (SC) group (n=70). CSI consisted of 5 sessions to achieve the enhancement of parental adaptive coping as the primary outcome (per the adaptive coping scale of the 28-item Brief COPE, a validated multidimensional self-assessment-questionnaire recommended for clinical cancer research). Measures of adaptive coping, depression, and mental health were collected at pre-CSI (measurement date T1), at the end of the intervention sessions (measurement date T2), and at follow-up (3 months). We calculated mean change scores in outcomes and estimated intervention effect sizes (Cohen's d) for changes from T1 to T2/T3, with 0.2 indicating a small effect, 0.5 a medium effect, and 0.8 a large effect. All statistical tests were 2-sided.

RESULTS

In the intention-to-treat analysis, the CSI group significantly improved their adaptive coping compared with the SC group (95% CI, 0.30-2.54; P=.013; d=0.405), whereas adaptive coping in the SC group deteriorated. The CSI group also experienced a significant decrease in depressive symptoms and improved mental health with clinical significance (95% CI, -1.98 to -0.30; P=.008; d=0.433, and 95% CI, -0.19 to 3.97; P=.074; d=0.292, respectively). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the main intention-to-treat analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

CSI improved effectively adaptive coping and depression in parents of AYAs with hematologic malignancies. It may represent a novel family-based approach in AYA oncology care.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of the Short-Form Survivor Unmet Needs Survey (SF-SUNS) among Cancer Patients

Objective

Accurate identification of the unmet needs of patients with cancer and with a valid and reliable scale leads to the improvement of planning and implementation of nursing care. Thus, this study aims to translate the Short-Form Survivor Unmet Needs Survey (SF-SUNS) into Persian and to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version among patients with cancer in Iran.

Methods

This study was conducted by methodological design. The translation of SF-SUNS was performed by translation protocol of the Quality of Life Assessment. Qualitative assessment of the face validity was conducted through cognitive interview and content validity was assessed through expert panel. This study used a convenience sampling method for 757 patients with cancer referring to Omid and Imam Reza hospitals in Mashhad, Iran. To determine the construct validity, confirmatory factor analysis and convergent validity were employed. Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient were calculated for reliability.

Results

Total score of unmet needs was 2.20 ​± ​0.73, which indicates the average level of unmet needs in patients with cancer. Content validity ratio and content validity index scores were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively, Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.89, and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.91. Based on confirmatory factor analysis, goodness-of-fit indices confirmed the model fit (χ²/df ​= ​4.43, GFI ​= ​0.90, TLI/NNFI ​= ​0.91, CFI ​= ​0.90, RMSEA ​= ​0.067). In the subscale of unmet work and financial needs, 4 items had a factor loading lower than 0.4, which were omitted from the Persian version. The results revealed a significant difference in the unmet needs and quality of life of patients with cancer (P ​< ​0.001).

Conclusions

The Persian version of SF-SUNS has desirable psychometric properties. It can be used to design and assess interventions to improve the quality of caring, cancer management, and as well as interaction between patients and healthcare providers.

Traditional Chinese-Hong Kong version of Forgotten Joint Score-12 (FJS-12) for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee underwent joint replacement surgery: cross-cultural and sub-cultural adaptation, and validation

Background

A patient-reported outcome (PRO) tool which reflects the outcomes of patients underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are important to be “ceiling effect free” which commonly used PRO tools face. Forgotten joint score-12 (FJS-12) has been proved to reduce or even free from ceiling effect. FJS-12 has been translated to different languages. The objectives of this study are to validate FJS-12 in Traditional Chinese-Hong Kong language and look for the goodness of FJS-12 still exist in this language adapted FJS-12 version.

Methods

FJS-12 was administered to 75 patients whose majority was obese underwent TKA between September 2019 and March 2020. Patients completed 3 sets of questionnaires (FJS-12, Oxford Knee Score (OKS), and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS)) twice, 2 weeks apart. Reliability, internal consistency, responsiveness, test–retest agreement and discriminant validity were evaluated.

Results

Reliability of FJS-12 showed moderate to excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.870). Test–retest reliability of FJS-12 was good (ICC = 0.769). Bland–Altman plot showed good test–retest agreement. Construct validity in terms of correlations between FJS-12 and OKS, and FJS-12 and NRS were moderate at baseline (Pearson’s coefficient r = 0.598) and good at follow-up (r = 0.879). Smallest detectable change (Responsiveness) was higher than MIC. Floor effect was none observed, and ceiling effect was low. Discriminant validity was found to have no significance. BMI (obesity) did not affect FJS-12 outcomes.

Conclusions

The Traditional Chinese-Hong Kong version of FJS-12 showed good test–retest reliability, validity, responsiveness, BMI non-specific, with no floor and low ceiling effects for patients who underwent TKA. Sub-culture differences in individual PRO tools should be considered in certain ethnicities and languages.

Territorial and Gender Differences in the Home Care of Family Members with Dementia

The increasing prevalence of dementia is threatening the capacity of health and social service systems to provide long-term care support at the territorial level. In both rural and urban areas, specific family members (gendered care) are responsible for the daily care of their relatives. The aim of this work is to explore gender and territorial implications in the provision of in-home care by family members. To this end, family caregivers in Navarre, Spain, were administered the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS-SR) and a semi-structured interview. The results show the good psychosocial adjustment of caregivers of relatives with dementia but the negative impacts of caregiving in the domestic, relational, and psychological domains. Moreover, the feminization of psychological distress was found to predominate in rural areas since mainly women are responsible for instrumental and care tasks, while men seek other complementary forms of support. Place of residence (rural vs. urban) was found to exert a strong effect on the respondents’ conception, life experience, and provision of care. Consequently, territorial and gender differences in coping with and adjusting to care require the design of contextualized actions adapted to caregivers’ needs.
