Abstract
While loneliness and social isolation in the workplace affect the mental health and job performance of employees, the effects of loneliness without distress and solitude (i.e., chosen isolation) on these outcomes are unclear. The cross-sectional association was examined by using online survey of full-time employees in Japan (n=846). The results showed that the "loneliness with distress" group had significantly higher psychological distress and lower job performance than the other groups. Work engagement was lower both in the "loneliness with distress" and "loneliness without distress" groups, compared to the "non-loneliness" group. The "unchosen isolation" and the "solitude" groups had poorer scores of psychological distress, work engagement, and work performance, compared to the "non-isolation" group. The preliminary findings showed that loneliness without distress and solitude were associated with poor levels of mental health and job performance and should become a target of mental health promotion interventions in the workplace.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although internet-based stress management programs are proven effective in improving mental health among workers, micro- and small-sized enterprises (MSEs), lacking in occupational healthcare services, face challenges implementing them. To address this gap, this study will develop the program with stakeholders at MSEs to aim for real-world implementation. OBJECTIVES This paper describes a study protocol for a pre-post feasibility study of an effectiveness-implementation hybrid type 2 trial of text-based internet-based programs ("WellBe-LINE") in MSEs with less than 50 employees. This feasibility study primarily aims to evaluate trial methods for future effectiveness-implementation hybrid type 2 trials. METHODS For this study protocol, an internet- and text-based self-care intervention program using the LINE app (a popular message tool in Japan) will be prepared according to evidence-based psychoeducational topics. Based on our online survey findings, personalized algorithms will be implemented according to employees' gender, age, and psychological distress levels. A personalized program using a popular pre-existing text app is expected to reduce employees' burdens and be attractive to them, resulting in successful implementation outcomes and mental health benefits. A pre-post design feasibility study will be conducted on ten companies to evaluate trial methods (e.g., recruitment and procedures). The primary outcome will involve individual-level penetration, defined as the proportion of the number of employees who register for the program divided by the total number of invited employees at the company. The progression criterion to go next trial specifies that more than 50% of the recruited companies obtain 60% individual penetration, which is set based on the findings of the prior survey of employees at MSEs and of interviews of stakeholders involved in this study, and will be measured by LINE system. Finally, acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility will be measured using internet-based questionnaires and interviews. DISCUSSION This pre-post feasibility study for future effectiveness-implementation hybrid type 2 trials will provide in-depth knowledge about the successful implementation of text-based, semi-personalized, self-care mental health interventions in real-world settings using both quantitative and qualitative data. CONCLUSIONS This feasibility study will help validate the effectiveness of text-based interventions using a widely used social networking service (SNS) tool for employees in MSEs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to examine the effect of a newly developed Internet-delivered behavioral activation (iBA) program on work engagement and well-being among Japanese workers with elevated psychological distress. METHODS Participants were recruited via an Internet survey company ( N = 3299). The eligibility criteria were as follows: (1) Japanese employees aged 20 to 59 years, (2) having psychological distress, and (3) not self-employed. This iBA program was a 3-week web-based training course using behavioral activation techniques. Work engagement, psychological distress, and eudemonic well-being at work were measured at baseline and postintervention period. A paired sample t test was conducted to assess the intervention effect. RESULTS Of the 568 eligible participants, 120 were randomly selected. A total of 108 participants completed the baseline survey and received the iBA program. Eighty respondents completed the postintervention survey and were included in analyses. The iBA program did not show a significant intervention effect on work engagement ( P = 0.22, Cohen d = 0.14), while psychological distress ( P < 0.01, d = -0.40) and role-oriented future prospects ( P = 0.02, Cohen d = 0.27) were significantly improved. CONCLUSIONS The effect of the iBA program on work engagement may be limited.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine whether a high score on the euthymia scale (ES) predicts a low incidence of depressive symptoms one year later. METHODS The baseline online survey was conducted in February 2020, and a follow-up survey was done in February 2021. Japanese over 20 years old were enrolled. Respondents who answered both baseline and follow-up, and without depressive symptoms at baseline were included in the analysis. The euthymia scores at baseline was measured by the 10 items of the Japanese version of the ES. Depressive symptoms at follow-up were determined if participants showed either depressive feelings or anhedonia. The odds ratio (OR) was calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis, adjusting for age, gender, marital status, educational attainment, and clinical visit for depressive episode before the baseline survey. RESULTS The total of 624 participants were analyzed. A total of n = 63 (10.1%) presented depressive symptom at follow-up. A high ES score significantly predicted a lower incidence of depressive symptoms, after adjusting for covariates (aOR = 0.81 [95% confidence interval: 0.72-0.89]). Using the cutoff score retrieved from this data, a high ES score (7 or more) showed the same tendency, compared to a low ES score (< 7) (aOR = 0.46 [0.25-0.83]). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests the predictive usefulness of euthymia for subsequent depressive symptoms. Further investigation is needed by employing rigid diagnostic criteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine whether having adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) was associated with living in a deprived area in adulthood. METHODS The cross-sectional study was conducted by using nation-wide data in 2022 of the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS). Participants were community dwelling people 18 years or older. ACEs were assessed by Japanese version of 15-items ACE measurement tool (ACE-J). Living condition was measured by Area Deprived Index (ADI) and Densely Inhabited District (DID) based on zip code. Multivariable logistic regression to analyze the associations between ADI and ACE 4 + was conducted, controlling for individual-level factors, such as age, sex, marital status, and education, as an additional analysis. RESULTS The total of 27,916 participants were included in the analysis. The prevalence of emotional neglect, childhood poverty, and school bullying were 38.2%, 26.5%, 20.8%, respectively. 75% of the population had one or more ACE(s). The number of ACEs was associated with significantly higher risk of living in deprived area in the adulthood (p = 0.001). ACEs were not associated with living in density area. The association between ADI and ACEs 4 + was non-significant after controlling the individual-level factors. CONCLUSION People with higher number of ACEs tend to live in deprived areas in adulthood. Policy makers in highly deprived areas can apply the trauma-informed approach for the community care and support, which is critical to mitigating deficit perspectives and facilitating comprehensive support for those with ACEs.

Abstract
Positive-strand RNA viruses replicate their RNA in the viral replication complex, a spherical structure formed by remodeling of host intracellular membranes. This process also requires the interaction between viral membrane-associated replication proteins and host factors. We previously identified the membrane-associated determinant of the replicase of plantago asiatica mosaic virus (PlAMV), a positive-strand RNA virus of the genus Potexvirus, in its methyltransferase (MET) domain, and suggested that its interaction with host factors is required to establish viral replication. Here we identified Nicotiana benthamiana dynamin-related protein 2 (NbDRP2) as an interactor of the MET domain of the PlAMV replicase by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and mass spectrometry analysis. NbDRP2 is closely related to the DRP2 subfamily proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana, AtDRP2A and AtDRP2B. Confocal microscopy observation and Co-IP confirmed the interaction between the MET domain and NbDRP2. Also, the expression of NbDRP2 was induced by PlAMV infection. PlAMV accumulation was reduced when the expression of NbDRP2 gene was suppressed by virus-induced gene silencing. In addition, PlAMV accumulation was reduced in protoplasts treated with dynamin inhibitor. These results indicate a proviral role of the interaction of NbDRP2 with the MET domain in PlAMV replication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prospective effect of adverse work-related psychosocial factors on increases in inflammatory markers. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and the Japan Medical Abstracts Society database. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they examined associations between work-related psychosocial factors and inflammatory markers (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and C-reactive protein), used longitudinal or prospective cohort designs, were conducted among workers, were original articles written in English or Japanese, and were published up to 2017 for the first search, October 2020 for the second, and November 2022 for the third. A meta-analysis was conducted using a random-effects model to assess the pooled effect size for the associations. A meta-regression analysis was used to estimate the association between length of follow-up and effect size. The ROBINS-I tool was used to assess risk of bias. RESULTS Of the 11,121 studies identified in the first search, 29,135 studies from the second, and 9448 studies from the third, eleven were eligible for this review and meta-analysis. The pooled coefficient between adverse work-related psychosocial factors and inflammatory markers was significant and positive (β = 0.014, 95% confidence interval: 0.005-0.023). However, a clear association was only observed for interleukin-6, and all the studies included had serious risks of bias. Meta-regression showed the effect size decreased depending on the follow-up period. CONCLUSION This study revealed a weak positive association between adverse work-related psychosocial factors and increases in inflammatory markers. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the response time to immunosuppressive therapy and time required to achieve a 5% increase in haematocrit among dogs with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Client-owned dogs diagnosed with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia in Hokkaido University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between December 2012 and May 2018 were enrolled. The first treatment regimen included prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day) and ciclosporin (up to 10 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks. Dogs that did not respond to the first regimen proceeded to the second regimen comprising prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil (15 mg/kg, twice a day). Reticulocyte count and haematocrit were monitored every 1 to 2 weeks. Treatment response was defined as an absolute reticulocyte count more than 60×103 /μL or increasing haematocrit. RESULTS During the study period, 23 dogs fulfilled the inclusion criteria for non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia. Twelve dogs were excluded from this study for various reasons and response to therapy was evaluated in the remaining 11 dogs. Treatment responses were observed in 8 of 11 dogs, and the median time to response was 39.5 days (range 8 to 92 days). Two responders were unable to continue the first treatment regimen and were switched to the second regimen owing to anorexia and nausea, possibly induced by ciclosporin; withdrawal of ciclosporin improved their symptoms. The time required to achieve a 5% increase in haematocrit was assessed in the other six dogs, with a median of 55.5 days (range 8 to 135 days). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Here we report the response to a standardised treatment protocol in dogs with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia. Knowledge of potential side effects and expected therapeutic outcomes may be of use for veterinary practitioners treating this condition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION No studies have investigated the prognostic value of left atrial stiffness (LASt) estimated using echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). ANIMALS Seventy-two dogs had MMVD and 46 dogs were healthy dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical retrospective cohort study. The survival information of MMVD dogs that underwent echocardiographic examination was obtained. The peak velocities of early diastolic transmitral flow (E) and mitral annular motion as determined by pulsed wave Doppler (E') were determined. The left atrial reservoir strain (εS) was determined by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography of the left atrium. The LASt was estimated by the formula: E/E'/εS. The 95% prediction interval of LASt was computed from the data of the healthy dogs. RESULTS Seventeen dogs having MMVD died of cardiac-related causes with 55 MMVD dogs censored. The MMVD dogs with LASt > its 95% upper prediction limit (LASt > 0.56; n = 26; median survival time, 484 days; 95% confidence interval, 283 days-indeterminable) had shorter survival times (P<0.001) than those with LASt ≤ its 95% upper prediction limit (LASt ≤ 0.56; n = 46; median survival time, >1112 days; 95% confidence interval, indeterminable). Multivariable Cox's proportional hazard analysis demonstrated that the ratio of the left atrial dimension to the aortic annulus dimension and LASt were independent predictors of cardiac-related death among conventional echocardiographic indices, εS and LASt in MMVD dogs. CONCLUSIONS In dogs with MMVD, increased LASt estimated using echocardiography is an independent predictor of cardiac-related death, and LASt can be more useful for prognostication than εS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Workplace measures against COVID-19 may prevent the onset of major depressive episode (MDE) in the working population. This 13-month prospective study aimed to investigate the association of the number of workplace measures against COVID-19 and employees' worry about the measures on the onset of MDE during COVID-19 outbreaks in Japan. METHODS Data were collected from employees by using online questionnaires at baseline (May 2020) and the 7th survey (June 2021). The onset of MDE during the follow-up was retrospectively measured at the 7th survey, with a self-report scale based on the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview according to the DSM-IV/DSM-5 criteria. Participants were asked to report the number of workplace measures against COVID-19 in their companies/organizations and their worry about these measures (scored 0-3). Multiple logistic regression was conducted of MDE on the number of workplace measures and worry about these, adjusting for demographic and work-related covariates and psychological distress at baseline. RESULTS Among 968 respondents employed in May 2020, 827 completed the 7th survey in June 2021 (80%). We excluded 75 respondents who reported they had an MDE in May 2020 or earlier. Worry about workplace measures was significantly associated with the onset of MDE after adjusting for the covariates (OR for 1 score increase, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.02-2.32; p = 0.042). No significant association was found between the number of workplace measures and the onset of MDE. CONCLUSIONS Worrying about workplace measures taken by company/organization may be a risk factor for the onset of an MDE among employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
The Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ) is used widely in occupational health studies and practice. Summarizing scientific production based on measurement is crucial. This study aimed to systematically review observational studies that used the BJSQ and the New BJSQ to show their usability. A systematic search was conducted for studies investigating relationships between the BJSQ or the New BJSQ subscales and other validated measurements on 13 September 2021, in various literature databases. The BJSQ subscales, scoring methods, and other validated measurements in the studies were qualitatively summarized. In total, 145 published reports between 2003 and 2021 were included. Among the BJSQ subscales, job stressors (n = 95) such as quantitative job overload (n = 65) and job control (n = 64) were most often used. The subscales were utilized to investigate the relationships with several other measurements. Five reports used subscales from the New BJSQ. In the last two decades, the BJSQ and the New BJSQ help measure psychosocial factors (PF) at work and contribute to the publication of scientific papers in the occupational health field. This study would encourage the utilization of the questionnaires for future research and practice.

Abstract
Participatory organizational interventions offer an effective way to promote occupational safety and health. Despite an increasing number of studies, a common definition of participatory organizational interventions has yet to be established. Therefore, we aimed to form a definition using the following process. First, we developed a tentative draft definition of organizational interventions and participatory elements, based on the relevant literature. The tentative definition was revised in several rounds of an extensive discussion by the authors. This resulted in the draft definition. We asked 15 selected international experts in occupational safety and health to review and comment on the draft definition. We carefully reviewed their comments, and formulated our final proposed definition. To summarize the key points of the final version of the definition, organizational interventions are planned actions that primarily directly target working conditions with the aim of promoting and maintaining of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well-being of workers in all occupations. In addition, as participatory elements of organizational interventions in the final definition, ideally, all workers participate in every step of the intervention, while participating in part of the steps of the intervention in some cases. Furthermore, in principle, all workers participate in each step of intervention, while it is also acceptable that only elected representatives among workers participate in the intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations of a poor working environment at home with psychological distress and psychosomatic symptoms in employees working from home in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS The data obtained in October 2021 from an online cohort of full-time employees (E- COCO- J) were used. Participants who worked from home for at least some days per month were included. The poor working environment at home was assessed using 11 items based on the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommended checklist. The score ranged from 0 to 11. Psychological distress and psychosomatic symptoms were measured by the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ). The associations between total scores of poor working environment and outcomes were examined by multiple regression analysis, adjusted by age, sex, education, living with family, frequencies of working from home, company size, job demand, job control, and workplace social support. RESULTS Two hundred twenty-six employees who were working at home were included. The mean of the summed scores of poor working environments at home was 2.75. After adjusting the covariates, summed scores of poor working environments were significantly associated with high psychological distress (standardized β = 0.21, P = .003) and with high psychosomatic symptoms (β = 0.19, P = .005). For each poor environment, lack of ventilation and difficulty staying hydrated or resting were significantly associated with both outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Even after adjusting for job stressors and support, working environments at home were associated with employees' mental health. Appropriate measures and education may be needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Translation of the Professional Fulfillment Index (PFI) into Japanese would be more useful than the currently developed scales for appropriately measuring burnout and professional fulfillment in healthcare professionals. This study aimed to develop the Japanese version of the PFI and examine its internal consistency, structural validity, and convergent validity in healthcare professionals. METHODS Healthcare professionals in Japan were recruited online. The survey was conducted from October to November 2022. Internal consistency was tested using Cronbach's α. Structural validity was tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Convergent validity was tested using Pearson's correlation coefficients, which were calculated between each score of the PFI scale and burnout (the Japanese Burnout Scale: JBS), depressive symptoms (the Patient Health Questionnaire-9), and QOL (the General Health Questionnaire-12). RESULTS The Cronbach's alpha was .91 in professional fulfillment, .80 in burnout: work exhaustion, .90 in burnout: interpersonal disengagement, and .89 in burnout: total score. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a modest fit, and EFA yielded a three-factor structure the same as the original PFI. The all three subscales and total score of burnout were significantly correlated with the scores of all the scales (p < .001; e.g., burnout: work exhaustion correlated emotional exhaustion in JBS, r = .71). CONCLUSIONS The Japanese version of the PFI demonstrated acceptable high internal consistency, structural validity, and convergent validity of the scale with a three-factor structure the same as in the original PFI. The Japanese version of PFI proved to be reliable and valid for use in healthcare professionals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined the effectiveness of a newly developed work-family life support program on the work-family interface and mental health indicators among Japanese dual-earner couples with a preschool child(/ren) using a randomized controlled trial with a waitlist. METHODS Participants who met the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated to the intervention or the control groups (n = 79 and n = 85, respectively). The program comprised two 3-h sessions with a 1-month interval between them and provided comprehensive skills by including self-management, couple management, and parenting management components. The program sessions were conducted on weekends in a community center room with 3-10 participants. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 1-month, and 3-month follow-ups. Primary outcomes were work-family balance self-efficacy (WFBSE), four types of work-family spillovers (i.e., work-to-family conflict, family-to-work conflict, work-to-family facilitation, and family-to-work facilitation), psychological distress, and work engagement reported by the participants. RESULTS The program had significantly pooled intervention effects on WFBSE (P = .031) and psychological distress (P = .014). The effect sizes (Cohen's d) were small, with values of 0.22 at the 1-month follow-up and 0.24 at the 3-month follow-up for WFBSE, and -0.36 at the 3-month follow-up for psychological distress. However, the program had nonsignificant pooled effects on four types of work-family spillovers and work engagement. CONCLUSIONS The program effectively increased WFBSE and decreased psychological distress among Japanese dual-earner couples with a preschool child(/ren).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association between pre-pregnancy menstrual cycle characteristics (i.e. cycle-length variability and cycle length) and antenatal depression. METHODS This study retrieved the data from the baseline survey of the randomized controlled trial with pregnant women at 16-20 weeks gestation who used a pregnancy tracking app. The antenatal depression was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 16-20 weeks gestation, and the cutoff point of 10/11 was adopted. Pre-conceptional menstrual cycle information was obtained via a prerecorded period tracking app. Cycle-length variability was defined as the average difference in the lengths between cycles, dichotomized into regular (≤6 days) and irregular (>6 days). Cycle length was coded as a categorical variable: <25 days, 25-26 days, 27-29 days (regular), 30-31 days, 32-33 days, and 34+ days. The associations of cycle disorders with EPDS scores were examined using regression analysis and a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for covariates. RESULTS The total of 3473 participants were analyzed in this study. Irregular cycle variability (>6 days) was significantly associated with high EPDS scores (adjusted: standardized beta = 0.049, p = 0.003) and with high cutoff EPDS scores (over 11) (adjusted OR = 1.40 [1.02-1.94], p = 0.038) but not with cycle length. CONCLUSION Irregular menstrual cycle before pregnancy was associated with depression during pregnancy. The health of the menstrual cycle during preconception needs to be further explored to promote healthy maternal mental health.

Abstract
This study examined the associations between childbirth decisions in women with unintended pregnancies and long-term psychological distress. An online survey of women selected from a representative research panel was conducted in July 2021. Among participants who experienced an unintended pregnancy, the childbirth decision was categorized: (i) wanted birth, (ii) abortion, (iii) adoption, and (iv) unwanted birth. Participants who made childbirth decisions more than 1 year ago were included. ANCOVA was conducted with psychological distress (Kessler 6) as the dependent variable and education, marital status, years from the decision, age of the first pregnancy, economic situation at the unintended pregnancy, and the number of persons consulted at the unintended pregnancy as covariates. Logistic regression analysis was conducted for high distress (K6 ≥ 13) by adjusting the same covariates. A total of 47,401 respondents participated in the study. Women with an experience of unintended pregnancy experienced more than 1 year before the study were analyzed (n = 7162). Psychological distress was the lowest for wanted birth and increased for abortion, adoption, and unwanted birth. In the adjusted model, abortion was associated with lower distress scores than both adoption and unwanted birth. Compared to the wanted birth, adoption and unwanted birth showed significantly higher levels of distress (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.03 [95% CI 1.36-3.04], aOR = 1.64 [95% CI 1.04-2.58], respectively). Long-term effects on psychological distress differed according to the childbirth decisions in unintended pregnancy. Healthcare professionals should be aware of this hidden effect of unintended pregnancy experience on women's mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Measuring implementation outcomes for digital mental health interventions is essential for examining the effective delivery of these interventions. The "Implementation Outcome Scale of Digital Mental Health" (iOSDMH) has been validated and used in several trials. This study aimed to compare the iOSDMH for participants in six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving web-based interventions and to discuss the implications of the iOSDMH for improving the interventions. Additionally, this study examined the associations between iOSDMH scores and program completion rate (adherence). METHODS Variations in total scores and subscales of the iOSDMH were compared in six RCTs of digital mental health interventions conducted in Japan. The web-based intervention programs were based on cognitive behavioral therapy (2 programs), behavioral activation (1 program), acceptance and commitment (1 program), a combination of mindfulness, behavioral activation, and physical activity (1 program), and government guidelines for suicide prevention (1 program). Participants were full-time employees (2 programs), perinatal women (2 programs), working mothers with children (1 program), and students (1 program). The total score and subscale scores were tested using analysis of variance for between-group differences. RESULTS Total score and subscale scores of the iOSDMH among six trials showed a significant group difference, reflecting users' perceptions of how each program was implemented, including aspects such as acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, overall satisfaction, and harm. Subscale scores showed positive associations with completion rate, especially in terms of acceptability and satisfaction (R-squared = 0.93 and 0.89, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The iOSDMH may be a useful tool for evaluating participants' perceptions of features implemented in web-based interventions, which could contribute to improvements and further development of the intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES COVID-19 has led to an increased use of online consultations in occupational health. We examined experience, satisfaction, and difficulties with online consultations during the first year after the COVID-19 pandemic by surveying a sample of workers. METHODS An online survey was conducted in March 2021 among full-time employees of an online panel survey (E-COCO-J: The Employee Cohort Study on the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan). Respondents were asked to report whether they had online or face-to-face consultations with occupational health professionals in the past year, their level of satisfaction, and their difficulties and problems related to the online consultations. RESULTS Of the 1,153 respondents, 1,102 (excluding those who were unemployed or on leave) were included in the analysis. Fifty respondents had had online consultations in the past year and 57 had face-to-face consultations. The proportion of respondents who reported satisfaction with online consultations was high (more than 70%) for general health, follow-ups, and guidance consultations, among others. However, the proportion of satisfaction with online occupational consultations was low (less than 40%) for employees who worked long hours, or took leave or returned to work. Over 30% of the respondents indicated that the difficulties with online consultations were due to incongruence with their expectations ("I preferred a face-to-face consultation instead of an online one"), quality of communication ("I did not feel like I was able to consult sufficiently"), and concerns about confidentiality ("I was worried that someone could hear our conversation"). CONCLUSION The experience of online consultations was similar to that of face-to-face consultations. Satisfaction with online occupational consultations for those who worked long hours and those who took leave or returned to work was low. In the online consultation for occupational health, the occupational health professional may be required to judge its suitability depending on type of the consultation and take necessary consideration and measures to maintain the quality of the online consultation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevention of perinatal depression beginning from the antenatal period is essential. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of recently developed internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for preventing the onset of a major depressive episode (MDE) in the third trimester and at 3 months postpartum. METHODS This is a two-arm, parallel-group, general-information controlled, randomized controlled trial. Participants were 5017 pregnant women at 16-20 weeks' gestation without MDE at baseline. They were randomly assigned to an iCBT (intervention; n = 2509) or general-information (control; n = 2508) group, stratified by psychological distress at baseline. The primary outcomes were the numbers of new MDE onsets, measured using the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0, at 32 weeks' gestation and at 3 months postpartum. RESULTS New MDE onset was reported by 59 participants (2.35%) in the intervention group and 73 (2.91%) in the control group during follow-up. Compared with the control group, the hazard ratio (HR) of MDE in the intervention group was 0.85 (95% CI 0.61-1.20), which was not significantly different. Among participants who scored between 5 and 8 on K6 at baseline, 10 (1.37%) in the intervention group reported new onset of MDE, compared with 28 (3.81%) in the control group, and the HR of MDE was 0.38 (95%CI 0.19-0.79). CONCLUSIONS No intervention effect was found for iCBT in preventing new onset of perinatal MDE. iCBT might prevent perinatal depression only among pregnant women with subthreshold depressive symptoms. Abstract
Objectives This prospective study aimed to examine the association of psychosocial working conditions with adverse reactions after receiving COVID‐19 vaccination in a sample of employees in Japan. Methods The data were retrieved from an online panel of full‐time employees (E‐COCO‐J). The analysis included participants who were employed and were not vaccinated at baseline (June 2021) but received vaccination at a 4‐month follow‐up (October 2021). An 11‐item scale measured the adverse reactions. Four types of psychosocial working conditions (i.e., job demands, job control, and supervisor and coworker support) were measured using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between the psychosocial working conditions and adverse reactions of COVID‐19 vaccines, adjusting for socioeconomic variables, chronic disease, the number of vaccination, type of vaccine, anxiety for adverse reactions, fear and worry about COVID‐19, and psychological distress at baseline. Results Overall, 747 employees were included in the analysis. The average number of adverse reactions was 3.8 (standard deviation = 2.2): Arm pain (81.1%), fatigues (64.1%), muscle pains (63.3%), and fever (37.5°C+) (53.5%) were reported more frequently. Coworker support score was significantly and negatively associated with the numbers of adverse reactions (standardized β = −0.100, P = .023). Women, young age, second‐time vaccination, Moderna, and high psychological distress were significantly associated with adverse reactions. Conclusions Employees with low coworker support may be more likely to have adverse reactions after vaccinations. The findings of this study could support that increasing workplace support may reduce adverse reactions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Workplace environment, especially psychosocial factors at work such as job strain, workplace social support, and shift work, may affect the menstrual abnormalities and fertility of female workers. However, the association between psychosocial factors at work and menstrual abnormalities or fertility is not well understood. To address this relationship, we will conduct a systematic review and a meta-analysis of the literature that has utilized a longitudinal or prospective cohort design. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The inclusion criteria for this systematic review and meta-analysis are defined as follows: (P) adult female workers (over 18 years old), (E) the presence of adverse psychosocial factors at work, (C) the absence of adverse psychosocial factors at work, and (O) any menstrual cycle disorders, menstrual-related symptoms, or fertility. The MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, PsycArticles, and Japan Medical Abstracts Society electronic databases will be used to search for published studies. The statistical synthesis of the studies included in the meta-analysis will be conducted to estimate pooled coefficients and 95% CIs. For the main analysis, we will synthesize measures of association between psychosocial factors at work and menstrual-related disorders/symptoms. At least three eligible studies will have to be gathered to conduct a meta-analysis; otherwise (i.e., if only one or two studies will be eligible and included), the results will be presented in a narrative table. We will use the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) to determine the quality of selected studies. To assess meta-bias, Egger's test, along with a funnel plot, will be used to check for publication bias. Lastly, we will examine heterogeneity using the χ2 test with Cochran's Q statistic and I2. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The results and findings will be submitted and published in a scientific peer-reviewed journal and will be disseminated broadly to researchers and policymakers interested in the translatability of scientific evidence into good practices. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the prospective effects of corporate and organizational workplace measures against COVID-19 on reducing employees` psychological distress during a 12-month follow-up in the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Data were retrieved from an online longitudinal panel survey of full-time employees in Japan, with the 1st survey in March 2020, and the 2nd to 6th surveys in May, August, November 2020, February and March 2021, respectively. Seven area-specific workplace measures were assessed using a self-report 23-item scale at the 2nd follow-up. Psychological distress was measured using an 18-item scale of the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire at each survey. Linear regressions and mixed model analysis were conducted of psychological distress at follow-ups on scores of the area-specific workplace measures, adjusting for psychological distress and other covariates at the 1st survey. RESULTS A total of 941 employees responded at baseline; most of them (86.9-90.9%) participated in the follow-up surveys. Linear regression analysis indicated that workplace measures of facilitating employees' preventive measures (ie, hygiene behaviors) statistically significantly and negatively correlated with psychological distress at the 5th survey [b=-0.518, standard error (SE) 0.259, P=0.046]. A statistically significant and negative interaction between the scores and time of follow-up was observed in the mixed model analysis (b=-0.096, SE 0.047, P=0.041). No such correlation or interaction was found for any of other subcategorical workplace measures. CONCLUSIONS The study provides prospective evidence for a protective effect of workplace measures to facilitate employee's hygiene behaviors on reducing psychological distress of full-time employees in the COVID-19 pandemic. The association seems stronger at a later follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of psychological well-being and euthymia represents an emerging issue in clinical psychology and psychiatry. Rating scales and indices such as the 5-item version of the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) and the Euthymia Scale (ES) were developed but insufficient attention has been devoted to the evaluation of their cross-cultural validity. This is the first study using Clinimetric Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (CLIPROM) criteria to assess cross-cultural validity and sensitivity of five different versions of the WHO-5 and ES. METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study involving a total of 3762 adult participants from different European (i.e., Italy, Poland, Denmark) and non-European (i.e., China, Japan) countries was conducted. Item Response Theory models (Mokken and Rasch analyses) were applied. RESULTS Mokken coefficients of scalability were found to range from 0.42 to 0.84. The majority of the versions of the WHO-5 fitted the Rasch model expectations. Paired t-tests revealed that the Italian and Danish WHO-5 versions were unidimensional. Person Separation Reliability indices showed that the Polish, Danish, and Japanese ES versions could reliably discriminate between subjects with different levels of euthymia. LIMITATIONS A convenience sampling was used, thus limiting the generalizability of study findings. In addition, no measures of negative mental health were administered. CONCLUSIONS WHO-5 can be used in international studies for cross-cultural comparisons since it covers transcultural components of subjective well-being. Findings also suggest that the ES can be used as a cross-cultural screening tool since it entailed the clinimetric property of sensitivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study validated the Japanese version of O'Donovan et al.'s (2020) composite measure of the psychological safety scale and examined the associations of psychological safety with mental health and job-related outcomes. METHODS Online surveys were administered twice to Japanese employees in teams of more than three members. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were tested using Cronbach's α and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Structural validity was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Convergent validity was tested using Pearson's correlation coefficients. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between psychological safety and psychological distress, work engagement, job performance, and job satisfaction. RESULTS Two hundred healthcare workers and 200 non-healthcare workers were analyzed. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity were acceptable. CFA demonstrated poor fit, and EFA yielded a two-factor structure, with team leader as one factor and peers and team forming the second factor. The total score showed significant and expected associations with all outcomes in the adjusted model for all workers. CONCLUSIONS The Japanese version of the measure of the psychological safety scale presented good reliability and validity. Psychological safety is important for employees' mental health and performance.

Abstract
Ethylene response factors (ERFs) comprise one of the largest transcription factor families in many plant species. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) ERF3 (NtERF3) and other ERF-associated amphiphilic repression (EAR) motif-containing ERFs are known to function as transcriptional repressors. NtERF3 and several repressor-type ERFs induce cell death in tobacco leaves and are also associated with a defence response against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). We investigated whether transcriptional activator-type NtERFs function together with NtERF3 in the defence response against TMV infection by performing transient ectopic expression, together with gene expression, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and promoter analyses. Transient overexpression of NtERF2 and NtERF4 induced cell death in tobacco leaves, albeit later than that induced by NtERF3. Fusion of the EAR motif to the C-terminal end of NtERF2 and NtERF4 abolished their cell death-inducing ability. The expression of NtERF2 and NtERF4 was upregulated at the early phase of N gene-triggered hypersensitive response (HR) against TMV infection. The cell death phenotype induced by overexpression of wild-type NtERF2 and NtERF4 was suppressed by co-expression of an EAR motif-deficient form of NtERF3. Furthermore, ChIP and promoter analyses suggested that NtERF2, NtERF3 and NtERF4 positively or negatively regulate the expression of NtERF3 by binding to its promoter region. Overall, our results revealed the cell death-inducing abilities of genes encoding activator-type NtERFs, including NtERF2 and NtERF4, suggesting that the HR-cell death signalling via the repressor-type NtERF3 is competitively but coordinately regulated by these NtERFs.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of vaccination to improve mental health among employees in Japan based on a prospective study. Methods The data were retrieved from the Employee Cohort Study conducted during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Japan (E‐ COCO‐J) at T1 (4–10 February 2021) and T2 (22–29 June 2021). Psychological distress was measured by using an 18‐item scale of the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ). The analytic sample was limited to individuals employed at both T1 and T2 without missing covariates. Vaccination status was measured at T2. Statistical analysis was conducted to test the differential change in the psychological distress at T1 and T2 with the time × group interactions by using repeated ANOVA, adjusting for the covariates (gender, age, marital status, education, chronic disease, company size, industry, and occupation). Results Of the total sample (N = 948), 105 (11.1%) were vaccinated at least once at T2. The crude mean scores of psychological distress at T1 and T2 were 41.8 and 42.0 for vaccinated participants and 41.2 and 41.2 for nonvaccinated participants, respectively, with no significant effect of having been vaccinated (Cohen's d = 0.02, P = 0.833). After adjusting the covariates, there was no significance (P = 0.446). Conclusions The COVID‐19 vaccination was supposed to have a limited effect on mental health among Japanese employees in an early phase of vaccination. To keep providing mental health care for employees is important even after starting the vaccination program.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has affected mental health among workers. Psychoeducational intervention via a website could be effective for primary prevention of mental illness among workers in the current COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to examine the effect of a newly developed online psychoeducational website named Imacoco Care on reducing psychological distress and fear about COVID-19 infection among workers. METHODS Participants in the study were recruited from registered members of a web survey company in Japan. Participants who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. Participants in the intervention group were invited to access the Imacoco Care program within a month after the baseline survey. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) scores were obtained at baseline and at 1- and 3-month follow-ups. RESULTS A total of 1200 workers were randomly allocated to the intervention and control groups (n=600 [50%] per group). The Imacoco Care intervention group showed a significant favorable effect on K6 scores (P=.03) with a small effect size (ES; Cohen d=-0.14) and an adverse effect on FCV-19S scores (P=.01) with a small ES (Cohen d=0.16) at 3-month follow-up. In the per protocol analysis (including only participants who had read the Imacoco Care content at least 1 time), the Imacoco Care intervention group also showed a significant favorable effect on reducing K6 scores (P=.03), while an adverse effect on FCV-19S scores was not significant (P=.06) in the intervention group at 3-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS A web-based psychoeducation approach may be effective for improving psychological distress among workers; however, it may be important not only to distribute information but also to encourage active engagement with the content of the program to prevent adverse effects of psychoeducational intervention. Abstract
Objectives Association between employment contract (temporary vs. permanent) and suicidal ideation (persistent suicidal ideation [i.e., with onset before COVID‐19] or newly developed under COVID‐19 pandemic) was examined using a nationally representative cross‐sectional study in Japan. Methods An Internet survey was conducted from August to September 2020. The participants’ inclusion criteria for this study were as follows: (i) 20–65 years old, (ii) employees (excluding self‐employed, students, retired, housewives, and unemployed). The associations of suicidal ideation with the employees’ factors were analyzed using the multinomial logistic regression model, adjusting for covariates (sex, age, marital status, education, company size, industries, and a history of psychiatric disease). Results Of total 12 249 participants, 72.4% were permanent and 27.6% were temporary employees. The prevalence was 8.5% for persistent suicidal ideation and 3.2% for newly developed suicidal ideation in the COVID‐19 pandemic. Temporary employment was significantly associated with persistent suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.36 [95% confidence interval, CI: 1.16–1.59]; P < .001), but not associated with newly developed suicidal ideation (aOR = 1.10 [0.85–1.42]; P = .457) after adjusting the covariates. Sensitivity analysis showed temporary employment was significantly associated with persistent suicidal ideation only in women. Newly developed suicidal ideation was significantly higher among participants of a young age, employees in drinking/eating/hotel business industry, and those having a history of psychiatric disease than among the counterparts. Conclusions Working on a temporary employment contract was associated with persistent suicidal ideation under conditions of COVID‐19 outbreaks in Japan. However, the result showed no significant difference in newly developed suicidal ideation. Further longitudinal study will be needed to examine the risk of being employed on an unstable occupational contract in the prolonged pandemic.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has spread throughout the world. Poor mental health has been reported among healthcare professionals responding to COVID-19. However, no study has examined the impact of COVID-19-related workplace bullying or patient aggression on the mental health of healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak. This study examined the prevalence of COVID-19-related workplace bullying and patient aggression and its association with psychological distress among healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan. This was a cross-sectional study conducted from May 22 to 26, 2020, inviting participants (n = 1,421) from an online survey of full-time employees. We limited the sample to healthcare professionals for further analyses. Using an online self-report questionnaire, workplace bullying and patient aggression related to COVID-19 was measured using nine items with dichotomous response options. Psychological distress was measured using the Japanese version of Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. Among 1,032 participants (72.6%) who completed the survey, 111 healthcare professionals were identified. Among them, 19 participants (17.1%) had experienced any COVID-19-related workplace bullying or patient aggression: 11 participants (9.9%) had experienced any workplace bullying and 12 participants (10.8%) had experienced any patient aggression. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that any bullying or patient aggression related to COVID-19 significantly correlated with psychological distress. It was suggested that a non-negligible proportion of participants experienced workplace bullying or patient aggression related to COVID-19. Preventing and reducing workplace bullying and patient aggression may be effective in improving mental health of healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
Background Digital mental health interventions are being used more than ever for the prevention and treatment of psychological problems. Optimizing the implementation aspects of digital mental health is essential to deliver the program to populations in need, but there is a lack of validated implementation outcome measures for digital mental health interventions. Objective The primary aim of this study is to develop implementation outcome scales of digital mental health for different levels of stakeholders involved in the implementation process: users, providers, and managers or policy makers. The secondary aim is to validate the developed scale for users. Methods We developed English and Japanese versions of the implementation outcome scales for digital mental health (iOSDMH) based on the literature review and panel discussions with experts in implementation research and web-based psychotherapy. The study developed acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, satisfaction, and harm as the outcome measures for users, providers, and managers or policy makers. We conducted evidence-based interventions via the internet using UTSMeD, a website for mental health information (N=200). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to assess the structural validity of the iOSDMH for users. Satisfaction, which consisted of a single item, was not included in the EFA. Results The iOSDMH was developed for users, providers, and managers or policy makers. The iOSDMH contains 19 items for users, 11 items for providers, and 14 items for managers or policy makers. Cronbach α coefficients indicated intermediate internal consistency for acceptability (α=.665) but high consistency for appropriateness (α=.776), feasibility (α=.832), and harm (α=.777) of the iOSDMH for users. EFA revealed 3-factor structures, indicating acceptability and appropriateness as close concepts. Despite the similarity between these 2 concepts, we inferred that acceptability and appropriateness should be used as different factors, following previous studies. Conclusions We developed iOSDMH for users, providers, and managers. Psychometric assessment of the scales for users demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity. Evaluating the components of digital mental health implementation is a major step forward in implementation science.

The purpose is to examine the association between Lp(a) and Mets on the CAD patients.
Method
847 male subjects with angiographically demonstrated CAD were enrolled. The subjects were divided into the five groups according to the scored numbers by the counting of Mets components shown below (presence 1, absence 0); 1. BMI ≥25kg/m2, 2. comorbidity of hypertension, 3. triglyceride ≥150mg/dL and/or HDL cholesterol <40mg/dL, 4. fasting plasma glucose ≥110mg/dL and/or comorbidity of diabetes mellitus (Group 0; without any Mets components, Group 4; with all Mets component). The insulin levels (μU/mL) and the prevalence of hyperLp(a)-emia (≥30 mg/dL) were compared between in Group 0 and in Group 4. The blood samples for laboratory tests were collected after an over night fast.
Result
As the scored numbers increased, the insulin levels increased (Group 0; 5.1 μU/mL versus Group 4; 11.4 μU/mL: p<0.0001) and the prevalence of hyperlipoprotein(a)-emia decreased (Group 0; 41.6% versus Group 4; 21.4%: p<0.01). The prevalence of hyperLp(a)-emia increased as the severity of coronary atherosclerosis aggravated (Figure 1; one vessel disease 21.5%, two vessel disease 27.0% three vessel disease 32.1%: one vessel disease versus three vessel disease p<0.01). Especially to limited the three vessel disease subjects (Figure 2), the prevalence of hyperlipoprotein(a)-emia in Group 0 was markedly high (56.7%).
Conclusion
More than the half number of severe CAD patients without features of Mets had hyperLp(a)-emia.

Abstract
Background
Diameter, intima–media thickness (IMT), and flow parameters, including resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI), in the common carotid artery (CCA) are markers of arterial remodeling, atherosclerosis, and vascular resistance, respectively. These CCA parameters have usually been evaluated as markers of target organ damage. Little is known about whether these parameters predict a new onset of hypertension.
Purpose
In this study, we investigated the association of CCA parameters including IMT, diameter, RI, and PI with the incidence of hypertension.
Methods
This is an observational study involving 1249 participants (656 women, mean age 69.6 years) without hypertension, who underwent carotid artery ultrasonography at baseline. The participants were divided into elderly group (defined as age ≥70 years) and a middle-aged group. We defined obesity as BMI ≥25 kg/m2. CCA diameter was defined as the distance between the adventitia–media interface on the near wall and the media–adventitia interface on the far wall. IMT was defined as the distance between the lumen–intima and media–adventitia interfaces. RI was calculated as [peak systolic velocity (PSV)- end-diastolic velocity (EDV)]/PSV. PI was calculated as (PSV-EDV)/Vmean. Larger CCA diameter, increased IMT, high RI, and high PI were determined based on the optimal cutoff values from ROC curve analysis.
Results
Over a mean 5.1-year follow-up period, 524 participants developed hypertension. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that larger CCA diameter and increased IMT were significant predicators for incident hypertension in elderly group, but not in middle-aged group. High RI, and high PI were significant predicators for incident hypertension in both the two groups. CCA diameter, IMT, and RI predicted the incidence of hypertension only in nonobesity group, whereas PI predicted it in both obesity and nonobesity groups (Table).
Conclusion
CCA parameters assessed by ultrasonography are useful markers to estimate the risk of hypertension. In particular, PI is a better predictor for the incidence of hypertension.

Background
Insulin resistance in adipose tissue attenuates the suppression of lipolysis, leading to increased free fatty acid (FFA) release. The excess FFA may be involved in the development of type 2 diabetes.
Purpose
In this study, we investigated the association of adipose tissue insulin resistance and serum free fatty acid levels with the incidence of type 2 diabetes.
Methods
This is an observational study involving 6800 participants (3451 women, mean age 69.2 years) without diabetes who underwent 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at baseline. The participants were divided into the obesity and nonobesity groups on the basis of body mass index of ≥25 and <25 kg/m2, respectively. Serum FFA levels were assessed before and 30, 60, and 120 min after glucose ingestion, and the total area under the FFA curve (AUCFFA) was calculated. Adipose tissue insulin resistance was assessed using adipose insulin resistance index (adipo-IR) calculated based on fasting FFA and insulin concentrations. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the Matsuda index were evaluated as measures of insulin resistance in the liver and whole-body, respectively. High adipo-IR, high fasting FFA, great AUCFFA high HOMA-IR, and low Matsuda index were determined based on the optimal cutoff values from ROC curve analysis.
Results
Over a mean 5.3-year follow-up period, 485 participants developed type 2 diabetes. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that high adipo-IR was a significant predicator for incident type 2 diabetes in the obesity group, but not in nonobesity group. AUCFFA, HOMA-IR, and Matsuda index were significantly associated with incident type 2 diabetes in both the two groups (Table).
Conclusion
Serum FFA levels after glucose loading predict the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Adipose tissue insulin resistance was associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in individuals with obesity, but not in individuals without obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Euthymia is characterized by the lack of mood disorders, the presence of positive affects, psychological flexibility and well-being, a unifying outlook on life, and resistance to stress. The Euthymia Scale (ES) is a 10-item self-rating clinimetric index assessing euthymia. OBJECTIVES The present study was conducted to examine the clinimetric sensitivity and concurrent validity of the Japanese version of the Euthymia Scale (ES-J). METHODS A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to determine the presence of past or current major depressive episodes (MDE). The clinimetric sensitivity was evaluated using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Pearson's correlation coefficients were performed to examine the concurrent validity of the ES-J. RESULTS A total of 1030 eligible participants completed the survey. The ES-J differentiated healthy subjects from complete remission (i.e., those with a past history of MDE without current MDE) (p < 0.001), from those with past or current history of MDE (p < 0.001), subjects with current MDE from those with sub-threshold symptoms of depression (p < 0.001), and healthy participants from subjects with moderate to severe symptoms of psychological distress (p < 0.001). The associations between the ES-J and measures of psychological well-being, resilience, life satisfaction, and social support were significantly positive (0.353 < r < 0.666, p < 0.001). A negative relationship between the ES-J and measures of psychological distress was also found (r = - 0.595, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study indicated that the ES-J is a valid and highly sensitive clinimetric index, which can be used as a screening measure in the clinical process of assessment of recovery, particularly when symptoms are expected to be mild and/or when dealing with subclinical symptoms of psychological distress and depression. The findings of this study also support the use of the ES-J to detect vulnerability to depression and to identify subjects at higher risk of relapse.

Abstract
Background The effect of an unguided internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) stress management program on depression may be enhanced by applying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to guide participants adopting the program. Objective The aim of this study is to describe a research protocol to investigate the effect of a newly developed iCBT stress management program adopting AI technologies on improving depression among healthy workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This study is a two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial. Participants (N=1400) will be recruited, and those who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to the intervention or control (treatment as usual) group. A 6-week, six-module, internet-based stress management program, SMART-CBT, has been developed that includes machine-guided exercises to help participants acquire CBT skills, and it applies machine learning and deep learning technologies. The intervention group will participate in the program for 10 weeks. The primary outcome, depression, will be measured using the Beck Depression Inventory II at baseline and 3- and 6-month follow-ups. A mixed model repeated measures analysis will be used to test the intervention effect (group × time interactions) in the total sample (universal prevention) on an intention-to-treat basis. Results The study was at the stage of recruitment of participants at the time of submission. The data analysis related to the primary outcome will start in January 2022, and the results might be published in 2022 or 2023. Conclusions This is the first study to investigate the effectiveness of a fully automated machine-guided iCBT program for improving subthreshold depression among workers using a randomized controlled trial design. The study will explore the potential of a machine-guided stress management program that can be disseminated online to a large number of workers with minimal cost in the post–COVID-19 era. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effect of perceived gratitude from others on work engagement, adjusting for possible confounders: job demands, job resources (supervisor/coworker support), personal resources (resilience), and gratitude trait. METHODS This cross-sectional study conducted a secondary analysis of data from previously published research. Work engagement was measured using the Japanese version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. An original one-item questionnaire measured perceived gratitude from others. A hierarchical linear regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS Hierarchical linear regression showed a significant association between perceived gratitude and work engagement even after controlling for the covariates of occupations, job demands, supervisor support, coworker support, resilience, and gratitude trait (N = 206). CONCLUSIONS The association between perceived gratitude and work engagement was independent of job demands, job/personal resources, and gratitude trait, suggesting the direct association.

Abstract
Objectives This study investigates and describes the time course of fears and worries about COVID-19 among current employees during this outbreak. Study design This was a longitudinal study. Methods This study was a part of the Employee Cohort Study in Japan. The study comprised 4120 individuals from February 2019. A baseline survey in March 2020, a 2-month follow-up survey in May 2020, and a 5-month follow-up survey in August 2020 were conducted. Questions surveyed respondents’ global fear and worry and six items related to COVID-19. A mixed model for repeated measures of an analysis of variance was used. Results A total of 1421 respondents completed the baseline survey. At 2- and 5-month follow-ups, 1032 and 1181 respondents completed surveys, respectively. Of those, 64 and 33 individuals who were temporarily laid off or on leave were recorded as missing values. Global fear and worry about COVID-19 significantly increased from March to August 2020. Fears of personal or family infection, limiting one's activities and national and local government policies also significantly increased with time. In contrast, fears of lack of knowledge and difficulty of obtaining hygiene products significantly decreased. Conclusion To conduct efficient risk communication during a pandemic, knowing the concerns of the populace, providing correct information and a sufficient supply of products, and setting clear guidelines are essential.

Abstract
There are growing concerns on stress among nurses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in South-East Asia. It is important to improve mental health among nurses in these countries. The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of two types of newly developed smartphone-based stress management programs in improving depressive and anxiety symptoms among hospital nurses in Vietnam. This study was a three-arm (including two intervention groups and one control group) randomized trial. Participants were recruited from nurses in a large general hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. Two types (free-choice and fixed sequential order) of smartphone-based stress management programs were developed. Participants were randomly allocated to Program A (a free-choice, multimodule stress management), Program B (a fixed-order, internet cognitive behavioral therapy, iCBT), or a control group (treatment as usual). The depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured by using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales at baseline, 3-, and 7-month follow-up surveys. 951 participants were randomly allocated to each of the three groups. Program B showed a statistically significant effect on improving depressive symptoms at 3-month (p = 0.048), but not at 7-month (p = 0.92); Cohen's d was - 0.18 (95% CI - 0.34 to - 0.02) and 0.03 (95% CI - 1.00 to 1.05), respectively. Program A failed to show a significant intervention effect on any of the outcomes at 3- or 7-month follow-up (p > 0.05). Despite the small effect size, the present fixed-order iCBT program seems effective in improving depression of hospital nurses in Vietnam. A public health impact of the intervention can be scalable, when considering its accessibility and minimal cost.Trial registration number: The study protocol is registered at the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMINCTR; ID = UMIN000033139). Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the longitudinal change of the psychological distress of healthcare workers (HCWs) with non-HCWs during the repeated outbreaks of the COVID-19 in Japan. METHODS The data were retrieved from the Employee Cohort Study in the Covid-19 pandemic in Japan study. An online survey was conducted on March 2020 (T1), on May 2020 (T2), on August 2020 (T3), and on November 2020 (T4). Psychological distress was measured by the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. A mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted as an indicator of the group differences. RESULTS A total sample of analysis was n = 996 (HCWs, n = 111; non-HCWs, n = 885). HCWs consisted of physicians/nurses/midwives and other HCWs (eg, pharmacists, clinical laboratory technicians) in the clinical settings (n = 19; 17% and n = 61; 55%, respectively), and HCWs not working in the clinical settings (n = 31; 28%). Being HCWs were associated with a significant increase in psychological distress from T1 to T2, T3 and T4 (P = .001, P = .002, P < .001; respectively). CONCLUSIONS The mental health of HCWs deteriorated through the COVID-19 outbreaks compared with non-HCWs. HCWs are continuously the important targets to provide mental health support.

Abstract
Objectives The present study investigated the reliability and validity of a newly developed Vietnamese version of the 9‐item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES‐9‐V) in a sample of hospital nurses in Hanoi, Vietnam. Methods The UWES‐9 was translated into Vietnamese following a standard procedure. A survey was conducted of 949 registered nurses in a large tertiary general hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2018, using a self‐administered questionnaire including the Vietnamese UWES‐9, other scales measuring health status, work performance, job demand, job control, and workplace social support, and questions pertaining to demographic variables. Cronbach’s alpha and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to assess reliability. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assess factorial validity. Convergent validity was tested based on associations between the UWES‐9‐V and subscales and other scales. Results The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the UWES‐9‐V and the Vigor, Absorption, and Dedication subscales were 0.93, 0.86, 0.77, and 0.90, respectively. ICC of the UWES‐9‐V in a subsample after 3 months was 0.48. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated an acceptable fit of both one‐factor and three‐factor structures, with the three‐factor model having the better fit. The UWES‐9‐V and its subscales correlated with depression, anxiety and stress, health‐related quality of life and health condition, job performance, and psychosocial work environment. Conclusions The study findings suggest that the UWES‐9‐V is a reliable and valid instrument to measure work engagement among hospital nurses in Vietnam, a low‐ and middle‐income country. Future studies should confirm the validity and reliability of the UWES‐9‐V among various occupations.
