Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B (HBV) and Delta (HDV) virus infections pose critical public health challenges, particularly in Romania, where HDV co-infection is underdiagnosed. METHODS This study investigates the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of HBV/HDV co-infection in vulnerable populations, leveraging data from the LIVE(RO2) program. Conducted between July 2021 and November 2023, the program screened 320,000 individuals across 24 counties, targeting socially disadvantaged groups such as rural residents, the Roma community, and those lacking health insurance. RESULTS Among 6813 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals, HDV antibody prevalence was 4.87%, with active replication confirmed in 75.6% of HDV-positive cases. Regional disparities emerged, with higher HDV prevalence and replication rates in the Eastern region compared to the South. HDV-positive individuals were more likely to be younger, male, and from rural or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Clinically, HDV co-infection correlated with increased liver stiffness, advanced fibrosis stages, and lower steatosis levels compared to HBV mono-infection. Psychiatric comorbidities were more prevalent among HDV-positive patients, highlighting the need for integrated care. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the urgent need for targeted public health interventions, including enhanced screening, education, and access to novel antiviral therapies like bulevirtide to address the significant burden of HBV/HDV co-infection in Romania.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for >90% of primary liver cancer cases, and chronic infections with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) are major contributors. METHODS A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE (PubMed) database, focusing on studies related to HBV, HDV, and HCC. RESULTS HBV contributes to HCC through mechanisms like viral integration into the host genome, chronic inflammation, and immune modulation, leading to genomic instability and altered cell signaling. HDV exacerbates HBV-induced liver damage, accelerating fibrosis and cirrhosis, and significantly increasing HCC risk. Antiviral therapies and vaccinations have majorly reduced the burden of HBV-related HCC, but HDV remains challenging to treat due to limited therapeutic options. Emerging treatments like Bulevirtide showed promising results. CONCLUSION This review highlights the critical impact of HBV and HDV co-infections on HCC development, emphasizing the need for more effective therapeutic strategies. While advances in antiviral therapies have reduced the incidence of HBV-related HCC, the high burden of HDV-related complications persists. Future research should focus on improving treatments for HDV and understanding its unique contribution to HCC pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The specific causative role of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains debated and was not specifically demonstrated in patients with cirrhosis. Here we compared HCC incidence in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-HDV coinfected and HBV monoinfected patients with cirrhosis. METHODS A total of 142 HBV-HDV and 271 HBV-infected patients with cirrhosis from the French ANRSCO12 CirVir and DeltaVir cohorts, with histologically proven cirrhosis and no history of decompensation, were included in the study. RESULTS HBV-HDV patients were younger than HBV patients (37.2 vs 53.8 years), they were more often immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, and displayed less comorbidities and more altered liver tests. After adjustment for age, cumulative incidences of HCC in coinfected and monoinfected patients at 1, 3, and 5 years were 5.2%, 11.8%, and 20.2% versus 1.1%, 2.5%, and 4.4%, respectively (P < .001). In multivariate analysis, HDV infection was an independent factor associated with the development of HCC (hazard ratio [HR], 2.94; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19-7.25; P = .019). Other independent factors were age (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.05-1.11; P < .001), overweight (HR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.22-0.93; P = .031), smoking (HR, 2.26; 95% CI, 1.23-4.16; P = .009), increased γ-glutamyltransferase (HR, 2.73; 95% CI, 1.24-6.00; P = .013), total bilirubin >17 μmol/L (HR, 2.68; 95% CI, 1.33-5.42; P = .006), and platelet count <150.000/mm3 (HR, 3.11; 95% CI, 1.51-6.41; P = .002). HDV coinfection was not an independent factor of liver decompensation, transplantation, or death. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of HCC seems significantly higher in HBV-HDV than in HBV-infected patients with cirrhosis. HDV infection emerges as an independent risk factor for HCC, indicating that in patients with cirrhosis, HDV plays a causative role for HCC independently of HBV.

Abstract
Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is an RNA subvirus that infects patients with co-existing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. HDV burden is estimated to be approximately 15-20 million people worldwide. Despite HDV severity, screening for HDV remains inadequate. HDV screening would benefit from a revamped approach that automatically reflexes testing when individuals are diagnosed with HBV if HBsAg-positive, to total anti-HDV, and then to quantitative HDV-RNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) rather than only testing those at high risk sequentially. There are no current treatments in the United States that are Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for the treatment of HDV; however, bulevirtide (BLV) is approved in the European Union conditionally and is under review with the United States FDA. Current treatment strategies in many countries are centered on the use of pegylated-interferon-alfa-2a (PEG-IFNa-2a). There are other therapies in development globally that have shown promise, including BLV, pegylated-interferon-lambda (PEG-IFN-lambda), and lonafarnib (LNF). LNF has shown substantial response in the LOWR trials. BLV is a well-tolerated drug, but it is not finite therapy and has shown significant on-treatment responses in the MYR clinical trials, and the FDA cited concerns with the manufacturing and patient preparation of the drug that have delayed approval. The PDUFA date for BLV in the United States is mid-2024. Current studies with both BLV and LNF are limited in providing sustained virological response (SVR); future trials will need to demonstrate more substantial SVR with possible triple combination trials as options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) often leads to end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Comprehensive data pertaining to large populations with HDV and HCC are missing, therefore we sought to assess the characteristics, management, and outcome of these patients, comparing them to patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. METHODS We analysed the Italian Liver Cancer database focusing on patients with positivity for HBV surface antigen and anti-HDV antibodies (HBV/HDV, n = 107) and patients with HBV infection alone (n = 588). Clinical and oncological characteristics, treatment, and survival were compared in the two groups. RESULTS Patients with HBV/HDV had worse liver function [Model for End-stage Liver Disease score: 11 vs. 9, p < .0001; Child-Turcotte-Pugh score: 7 vs. 5, p < .0001] than patients with HBV. HCC was more frequently diagnosed during surveillance (72.9% vs. 52.4%, p = .0002), and the oncological stage was more frequently Milan-in (67.3% vs. 52.7%, p = .005) in patients with HBV/HDV. Liver transplantation was more frequently performed in HBV/HDV than in HBV patients (36.4% vs. 9.5%), while the opposite was observed for resection (8.4% vs. 20.1%, p < .0001), and in a competing risk analysis, HBV/HDV patients had a higher probability of receiving transplantation, independently of liver function and oncological stage. A trend towards longer survival was observed in patients with HBV/HDV (50.4 vs. 44.4 months, p = .106). CONCLUSIONS In patients with HBV/HDV, HCC is diagnosed more frequently during surveillance, resulting in a less advanced cancer stage in patients with more deranged liver function than HBV alone. Patients with HBV/HDV have a heightened benefit from liver transplantation, positively influencing survival.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stands as the most common cancer type, arising from various causes, and responsible for a substantial number of cancer-related fatalities. Recent advancements in viral metagenomics have empowered scientists to delve into the intricate diversity of the virosphere, viral evolution, interactions between viruses and their hosts, and the identification of viral causes behind disease outbreaks, the development of specific symptoms, and their potential role in altering the host's physiology. The present study had the objective of "Molecular Characterization of HBV, HCV, anelloviruses, CMV, SENV-D, SENV-H, HEV, and HPV viruses among individuals suffering from HCC." A total of 381 HCC patients contributed 10 cc of blood each for this study. The research encompassed the assessment of tumor markers, followed by molecular characterization of HBV, HCV, Anelloviruses (TTV, TTMV, and TTMDV), SENV-H and SENV-D viruses, HEV, CMV, and HPV, as well as histopathological examinations. The outcomes of this study revealed that majority of the HCC patients 72.4% (276/381) were male as compared to females. HCV infection, at 76.4% (291 out of 381), exhibited a significant association (p < 0.05) with HCC. Most patients displayed singular lesions in the liver, with Child Pugh Score Type B being the predominant finding in 45.2% of cases. Plasma virome analysis indicated the prevalence of TTMDV (75%), followed by TTMV (70%) and TTV (42.1%) among anelloviruses in HCC patients. Similarly, SENV-H (52%) was followed by SENV-D (20%), with co-infections at 15%. The presence of CMV and HEV among the HCC patients was recorded 5% each however 3.5% of the patients showed the presence of HPV. In conclusion, this study underscores that HCC patients serve as reservoirs for various pathogenic and non-pathogenic viruses, potentially contributing to the development, progression, and severity of the disease.

Abstract
In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections caused 1.5 million deaths, mostly attributable to complications from chronic infections, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite the availability of a vaccine, 296 million people were chronically infected in 2019. Asia and Africa are the continents most affected by this infection, with around 100 million people infected in Africa as a whole.Hepatitis Delta or D virus (HDV), which is a "satellite" virus of HBV, is often misunderstood and its diagnosis remains neglected. However, it is associated with acute fulminant forms and chronic forms of hepatitis leading to a more rapid evolution towards cirrhosis and HCC than during HBV mono-infection. Research on these two viruses HBV and HDV has progressed a lot in recent years, and new treatments are currently in development.In people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (PlHIV), liver disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Due to common modes of transmission, dual or triple HIV/HBV or HIV/HBV/HDV infections are relatively common, particularly in HBV endemic regions such as Africa. However, while today most co-infected patients benefit from effective treatment against both HIV and HBV, the latter is not active against HDV. In Africa, hepatitis B and D have already been the subject of several studies. However, the frequency and clinical consequences of these co-infections have been little studied in the general population and in PlHIV.This review seeks to update the epidemiological and clinical data and the therapeutic perspectives of HDV co-infections or triple infections (HIV-HBV-HDV) in Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Bulevirtide (BLV) is a HDV/HBV entry inhibitor that is associated with virologic response (responders, HDV-RNA undetectable or ≥2 log10 IU/ml decrease from baseline) in >50% of patients after a 24-week treatment. However, some patients only achieve a <1 log10 IU/ml decline in HDV-RNA after the 24-week treatment (non-responders). Here, we report a viral resistance analysis in participants receiving BLV monotherapy who were non-responders or experienced virologic breakthrough (VB, i.e., two consecutive increases in HDV-RNA of ≥1 log10 IU/ml from nadir or two consecutive HDV-RNA detectable results if previously undetectable) from the phase II MYR202 and phase III MYR301 study. METHODS Deep-sequencing of the BLV-corresponding region in HBV PreS1 and of the HDV HDAg gene, as well as in vitro phenotypic testing, were performed for the participant with VB (n = 1) and non-responders (n = 20) at baseline (BL) and Week 24 (WK24). RESULTS No amino acid exchanges associated with reduced susceptibility to BLV within the BLV-corresponding region or within HDAg were identified in isolates from any of the 21 participants at BL or at WK24. Although variants (HBV n = 1; HDV n = 13) were detected at BL in some non-responders or in the participant with VB, none were associated with reduced sensitivity to BLV in vitro. Furthermore, the same variant was detected in virologic responders. A comprehensive phenotypic analysis demonstrated that the BLV EC50 values from 116 BL samples were similar across non-responders, partial responders (HDV RNA decline ≥1 but <2 log10 IU/ml), and responders regardless of the presence of HBV and/or HDV polymorphisms. CONCLUSIONS No amino acid substitutions associated with reduced sensitivity to BLV monotherapy were detected at BL or WK24 in non-responders or the participant with VB after 24-week BLV treatment. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS This is the first study investigating the development of resistance in patients treated with BLV. Excluding resistance to BLV as an explanation for an insufficient decrease in HDV-RNA levels during BLV therapy is an important finding for patients, clinicians, and researchers. It demonstrates that BLV has a high barrier to resistance, indicating it is safe and suitable for long-term treatment, although long-term surveillance for resistance should be performed. Our results hint at other still unknown mechanisms as an explanation for the persistence of serum HDV-RNA during inhibition of viral entry. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBERS NCT03546621 and NCT03852719.

Abstract
Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection affects more than 10 million people worldwide, with an estimated prevalence of nearly 4.5% among HBsAg-positive individuals. Epidemiological studies have shown a significant increase in the prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic HDV infection compared to those with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) mono-infection. Despite the clinical findings, data on molecular oncogenic mechanisms are limited and fragmentary. Moreover, the role of HDV in promoting the development of HCC has so far been controversial, because it is difficult to weigh the respective contributions of the two viruses. In this review, we focused on the direct oncogenic action of HDV, its role in modifying the tumor microenvironment, and the genetic signature of HDV-related HCC, comparing these features with HBV-related HCC.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a global health challenge. Due to the high prevalence in low-income countries, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus infections remain the main risk factors for HCC occurrence, despite the increasing frequencies of non-viral etiologies. In addition, hepatitis D virus coinfection increases the oncogenic risk in patients with HBV infection. The molecular processes underlying HCC development are complex and various, either independent from liver disease etiology or etiology-related. The reciprocal interlinkage among non-viral and viral risk factors, the damaged cellular microenvironment, the dysregulation of the immune system and the alteration of gut-liver-axis are known to participate in liver cancer induction and progression. Oncogenic mechanisms and pathways change throughout the natural history of viral hepatitis with the worsening of liver fibrosis. The high risk of cancer incidence in chronic viral hepatitis infected patients compared to other liver disease etiologies makes it necessary to implement a proper surveillance, both through clinical-biochemical scores and periodic ultrasound assessment. This review aims to outline viral and microenvironmental factors contributing to HCC occurrence in patients with chronic viral hepatitis and to point out the importance of surveillance programs recommended by international guidelines to promote early diagnosis of HCC.

Abstract
Die Blockade des Zelleintritts von Krankheitserregern ist ein geeigneter Ansatz, um Neuinfektionen zu verhindern. Der therapeutische Einsatz von Eintrittsinhibitoren bei chronisch infizierten Patienten war jedoch bisher nur begrenzt erfolgreich. Zur Behandlung von chronischen Hepatitis-D-Virus-(HDV-)Infektionen wurde im Juli 2020 mit Bulevirtide (BLV) ein vielversprechender Wirkstoff bedingt zugelassen, der auf diesem Wirkprinzip beruht. Zuvor hatten für HDV keine gezielte Medikation zur Verfügung gestanden und die Behandlung beruhte auf dem Off-Label-Einsatz von Interferon-Alpha/Peginterferon-Alpha (IFNα/Peg-IFNα). In diesem Beitrag wird ein Überblick über die Grundlagen des Wirkmechanismus von BLV gegeben und bisher vorliegende klinische Daten werden zusammengefasst. Eine HDV-Infektion manifestiert sich als Ko- oder Superinfektion bei Hepatitis-B-Virus-(HBV-)Infektionen und betrifft 4,5–15 % der HBV-Patienten weltweit. HDV nutzt die Hüllproteine von HBV zur Verbreitung. BLV wirkt, indem es den HBV/HDV-Rezeptor natriumtaurocholat-co-transportierendes Polypeptid (NTCP) blockiert und so den Eintritt von HBV/HDV in Hepatozyten verhindert. BLV senkt die HDV-Serum-RNA-Spiegel und führt bei HBV/HDV-infizierten Personen zur Normalisierung der Alanin-Aminotransferase-(ALT-)Werte. Es hat ein ausgezeichnetes Sicherheitsprofil, selbst wenn es über 48 Wochen in hohen Dosen (10 mg täglich) verabreicht wird. In Kombination mit Peg-IFNα zeigt BLV synergistische Effekte auf die Senkung der HDV-RNA im Serum, aber auch auf die Hepatitis-B-Oberflächenantigen-(HBsAg‑)Spiegel. Dies führte bei einer Untergruppe von Patienten zu einer funktionellen Heilung, wenn 2 mg BLV plus Peg-IFNα verabreicht wurden. Der Mechanismus dieser wahrscheinlich immunvermittelten Eliminierung wird in Folgestudien untersucht.

Abstract
AIM Given the current literature data, this article aims to shed light on the epidemiological and clinical effects of HBV, as well as its impact on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS A review of the English language literature based on a MEDLINE (PubMed) database was searched. The keywords were cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, epidemiology, hepatitis delta virus, hepatitis B virus, and co-infection. All references from retrieved papers were reviewed systematically to find additional collection of reports. RESULTS The study has broadly confirmed the contribution of HDV viremia to liver disease and cirrhosis. However, uncertainty over the mechanism of action on HCC development remains. As the recent data has demonstrated, the HCC-HDV has a unique molecular profile which is distinct from that of HBV-HCC. CONCLUSION Owing to the dependence of HDV on HBV, it is not clear whether HCC is a consequence of the cumulative effect of both HBV and HDV, an effect of the underlying cirrhosis, or a direct oncogenic effect of HDV. Many questions concerning the oncogenic role of HDV remain unanswered. To better understand the role of HDV in carcinogenesis, studies at the molecular level that consider genotype differences should be increased. Multicenter, high-volume, and prospective studies that compare HBV/HDV co-infected and HBV-infected individuals will be pivotal in determining the oncogenic role of HDV.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Due to the lack of efficient tools for early detection, asymptomatic HCC patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to a poor prognosis. To improve survival, serum biomarker prothrombin induced by vitamin K absence-II (PIVKA-II) was under investigation. PIVKA-II is an abnormal protein produced in HCC. The coagulation function was insufficient due to the lack of Gla residues. Elevated PIVKA-II was associated with bad tumor behavior in terms of proliferation, metastasis, and invasion. Three major signaling pathways were proposed to clarify the mechanism. With the advantages including affordability, minimal invasiveness, convenience, and efficiency, PIVKA-II could improve HCC management consisting of four aspects. First, PIVKA-II was an effective and dynamic tool for improving HCC surveillance in high-risk population. Changes in the serum levels of PIVKA-II provided valuable molecular alteration information before imaging discovery. Second, PIVKA-II offered a complementary approach for HCC early detection. Compared to traditional diagnostic approaches, the combination of PIVKA-II and other biomarkers had better performance. Third, PIVKA-II was an indicator for the assessment of response to treatment in HCC. Preoperative assessment was for selecting personalized therapy, and postoperative measurement was for assessing treatment efficacy. Fourth, PIVKA-II was considered as a prognostic predictor for HCC. Patients with elevated PIVKA-II were more likely to develop microvascular invasion, metastasis, and recurrence.

Abstract
Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is an RNA virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to propagate into hepatocytes, with Genotype I being more prevalent globally. However, the prevalence of HDV genotypes in Taiwan is unknown. Accordingly, a cohort including 24 chronic HBV patients who received nucleos(t)ides (NUCs) between January 2002 and July 2018 was used to determine HDV genotypes and genotype specific serological association in chronic HBV carriers. HDV-positive genotypes in 18/24 (75%) males and 6/24 (25%) females were identified among chronic HBV patients. Viremia was lower in HDV-IV patients than in patients affected with other HDV genotypes (1.34 log10 copies/mL vs. 3.30 log10 copies/mL; p = 0.009). A logistics regression analysis revealed that HDV-IV was inversely proportional to HDV RNA (odds ratio [OR]/95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.370/0.164-0.830; p = 0.017). The serologic association study indicated lower levels of creatinine (p = 0.047) and HDV-RNA (p = 0.009) in the HDV-IV group than the non-HDV-IV group but did not indicate any significant differences in the AST, ALT, bilirubin levels or other laboratory test factors. The three genotypes evident in Taiwan were HDV-I (4/24, 16.7%), HDV-II (6/24, 25.0%), and HDV-IV (14/24, 58.3%), and HDV-IV is the predominant HDV genotype in Taiwan. These results anticipate a clear understanding of HDV genotype serological association in chronic HBV carriers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To clarify and investigate the prevalence and clinical impact of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection in Taiwan's communities. METHODS HDV infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection was examined using an anti-HDV antibody in Yonghe Cardinal Tien Hospital (YCTH), a district hospital in Taiwan. Clinical characteristics of anti-HDV-positive and anti-HDV-negative patients were collected and compared. These characteristics were also compared with the data collected from a medical center. Continuous variables and confounding factor adjustments were compared using the analysis of covariance method, whereas categorical variables were compared using the logistic regression method. RESULTS A total of 346 patients with chronic HBV infection were assessed from 2018 to 2019. Among them, 4 (1.15%) were positive for anti-HDV. The clinical, virological, and biochemical characteristics were similar between anti-HDV-positive and anti-HDV-negative groups. None of the four patients was positive for serum HDV RNA. Another 18 anti-HDV-positive patients were identified from National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The clinical, virological, and biochemical characteristics of anti-HDV-positive patients from YCTH and NTUH were also similar. CONCLUSION The prevalence of HDV and the serum HDV RNA-positive rate were low in district hospitals in Taiwan. Coexisting HDV infection did not influence the clinical manifestation of patients with chronic HBV infection in Taiwan. However, because the number of HDV RNA cases was very small, our findings may not be conclusive. Besides, since the sensitivity of current anti-HDV kit is not 100%, more sensitive methods are needed to achieve reliable prevalence data.

Abstract
Virus-related liver carcinogenesis is one of the main contributors of cancer-related death worldwide mainly due to the impact of chronic hepatitis B and C infections. Three mechanisms have been proposed to explain the oncogenic properties of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection: induction of chronic inflammation and cirrhosis, expression of HBV oncogenic proteins, and insertional mutagenesis into the genome of infected hepatocytes. Hepatitis B insertional mutagenesis modifies the function of cancer driver genes and could promote chromosomal instability. In contrast, hepatitis C virus promotes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence mainly through cirrhosis development whereas the direct oncogenic role of the virus in human remains debated. Finally, adeno associated virus type 2 (AAV2), a defective DNA virus, has been associated with occurrence of HCC harboring insertional mutagenesis of the virus. Since these tumors developed in a non-cirrhotic context and in the absence of a known etiological factor, AAV2 appears to be the direct cause of tumor development in these patients via a mechanism of insertional mutagenesis altering similar oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes targeted by HBV. A better understanding of virus-related oncogenesis will be helpful to develop new preventive strategies and therapies directed against specific alterations observed in virus-related HCC.

Abstract
: About 5% of cases with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) are co-infected with hepatitis D virus (HDV), and this co-infection possesses a high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cirrhosis. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and histopathological characteristics and response to treatment in patients with HBV and HDV co-infection in a hepatitis clinic in Tehran, Iran. In this study, 80 patients were enrolled and evaluated for age, sex, degree of liver fibrosis, virologic status, and response rate. The incidence of co-infection of hepatitis B and D was 4.9% (80/1,631 HBV-infected cases) in our clinic. Thirty-seven (46.25%) patients had liver cirrhosis, and four (5%) patients had HCC. Besides, HDV Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was positive for 31 (38.75 %) patients. Among 30 patients, 14 (46.6%) completed interferon therapy (for equal to or more than 48 weeks) and had a response with undetectable HDV RNA PCR after treatment. According to our results, for cirrhotic patients in HBV/HDV co-infection that was about 46%, it seems that the early detection of HDV antibody (Ab) plays a significant role in the prevention of progressive liver failure, and treatment with interferon can help these patients by improving the prognosis.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated that chronic hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection is associated with a worsening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is limited data on the role of HDV in the oncogenesis of HCC. This study is aimed at assessing the potential mechanisms of HDV-associated hepatocarcinogenesis, especially to screen and identify key genes and pathways possibly involved in the pathogenesis of HCC. We selected three microarray datasets: GSE55092 contains 39 cancer specimens and 81 paracancer specimens from 11 HBV-associated HCC patients, GSE98383 contains 11 cancer specimens and 24 paracancer specimens from 5 HDV-associated HCC patients, and 371 HCC patients with the RNA-sequencing data combined with their clinical data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Afterwards, 948 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) closely related to HDV-associated HCC were obtained using the R package and filtering with a Venn diagram. We then performed gene ontology (GO) annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis to determine the biological processes (BP), cellular component (CC), molecular function (MF), and KEGG signaling pathways most enriched for DEGs. Additionally, we performed Weighted Gene Coexpression Network Analysis (WGCNA) and protein-to-protein interaction (PPI) network construction with 948 DEGs, from which one module was identified by WGCNA and three modules were identified by the PPI network. Subsequently, we validated the expression of 52 hub genes from the PPI network with an independent set of HCC dataset stored in the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database. Finally, seven potential key genes were identified by intersecting with key modules from WGCNA, including 3 reported genes, namely, CDCA5, CENPH, and MCM7, and 4 novel genes, namely, CDC6, CDC45, CDCA8, and MCM4, which are associated with nucleoplasm, cell cycle, DNA replication, and mitotic cell cycle. The CDCA8 and stage of HCC were the independent factors associated with overall survival of HDV-associated HCC. All the related findings of these genes can help gain a better understanding of the role of HDV in the underlying mechanism of HCC carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Background To explore the value of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) in diagnosis of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and their relationship with vascular invasion, tumor differentiation and size. Methods A total of 433 participants were enrolled in this study including 266 cases with HBV-related HCC, 87 cases with HBV DNA positive benign liver disease and 80 healthy individuals. Then we explored the correlation between AFP, PIVKA-II serum level and several pathological features such as vascular invasion, tumor differentiation and size. The value of these two markers used singly or jointly in diagnosing HBV-related HCC was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The ROC curve was also plotted to identify AFP, PIVKA-II serum cut-off values that would best distinguish HBV-related HCC patients with and without vascular invasion. Results The level of AFP and PIVKA-II in HBV-related HCC group was significantly higher (Z was 7.428, 11.243 respectively, all P < 0.01). When AFP and PIVKA-II were used as the individual tumor marker, the areas under the ROC curve (AUC) of HBV-related HCC diagnosis were 0.765 (95% CI, 0.713 ~ 0.8170) for AFP, 0.901 (95% CI, 0.868 ~ 0.935) for PIVKA-II, and 0.917 (95% CI, 0.886 ~ 0.948) for AFP and PIVKA-II simultaneously. The serum levels of AFP and PIVKA-II were positively correlated with tumor differentiation and size. High AFP and PIVKA-II expression was significantly associated with the presence of vascular invasion (P was 0.007 and 0.014 respectively). The AFP level > 64.4 ng/ml or PIVKA-II level > 957.61mAU/ml was the best critical value to predict the presence of vascular invasion. Conclusion Our results validate that AFP and PIVKA-II play a significant role in the diagnosis of HBV-related HCC. The diagnostic value of AFP and PIVKA-II combined detection or single assay of PIVKA-II is higher than that of separate assay of AFP. Moreover, their concentration has important clinical value in judging tumor size, tumor cell differentiation and vascular invasion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Chronic hepatitis D (CHD) is the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis but its role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains debated. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies to examine whether CHD is associated with an increased risk of HCC. METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science, as well as study references and conference proceedings. We considered cohort and case-control studies allowing the calculation of effect estimates for the association between CHD (exposure) and HCC (outcome) in comparison to chronic hepatitis B. Data extraction and quality evaluation (using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale) were performed independently by 2 authors. Data were pooled using random-effects models. RESULTS Ninety-three studies (68 case-control studies including 22,862 patients and 25 cohort studies including 75,427 patients) were included. Twelve studies accounted for confounders, in either study design or analysis (10 of which were cohorts), and 11 cohorts were prospective. The overall analysis showed a significantly increased risk of HCC in patients with CHD, despite substantial study heterogeneity (pooled odds ratio 1.28; 95% CI 1.05-1.57; I2 = 67.0%). The association was particularly strong in the absence of heterogeneity for prospective cohort studies (pooled odds ratio 2.77; 95% CI 1.79-4.28; I2 = 0%), and studies with HIV-infected patients (pooled odds ratio 7.13; 95% CI 2.83-17.92; I2 = 0%). CONCLUSIONS We found a significantly higher risk of HCC in patients with CHD. Although further studies are needed to definitively exclude a potential bias due to antiviral treatments, our findings highlight the rationale for improved screening of hepatitis D virus infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B, and the urgent need for novel and effective antiviral therapies. LAY SUMMARY Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a defective pathogen requiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) to complete its life cycle. Chronic hepatitis D is the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis, increasing the risk of cirrhosis, liver decompensation and death compared to HBV monoinfection. However, the association between HDV infection and increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma is debated. We conducted a systematic review and found that patients with HDV infection had a significantly higher risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma than those with HBV monoinfection.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of hepatitis D virus (HDV) on hepatitis B virus-hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) co-recurrence in patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for HBV alone or HBV-HDV coinfection. METHODS Between 2002 and 2019, 254 HBV-HCC patients underwent LDLT. The patients were divided into two groups after the application of the exclusion criteria: HBV-HCC (Group B; n = 163) and HBV-HDV-HCC (Group D; n = 31). First, the B and D groups were compared in terms of demographic and clinical parameters. Second, patients with (n = 16) and without (n = 178) post-transplant HBV-HCC co-recurrences were grouped and compared in terms of the same parameters. RESULTS Although the risk of HBV-HCC co-recurrence in group D was 4.99-fold higher than in group B, the risk of HBV recurrence alone in group D was 12.5-fold lower than in group B. The AFP (OR = 4.4), Milan criteria (beyond; OR = 18.8), and HDV (OR = 8.1) were identified as the independent risk factors affecting post-transplant HBV-HCC co-recurrence. The Milan criteria (OR = 2.1) and HBV-HCC co-recurrence (OR = 10.9) were identified as the risk factors affecting post-transplant mortality. HBV-HCC co-recurrence developed in 26.5% of patients in Group B and 100% in Group D (OR = 40; p = 0.001). HCC recurrence alone developed in 10% of patients without HBV recurrence in group B and 0% of patients without HBV recurrence in group D (OR = 5.7). CONCLUSION This study showed that the risk of HBV recurrence alone was reduced by 12.5-fold in the presence of HDV; however, the HCC recurrence occurred in all patients with HDV when HBV recurrence developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis C virus (HCV) represents a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development and anti-HCV therapy is a significant measure to reduce the incidence of HCC, however development of HCC in HCV treated patients is an emerging clinical problem which needs to be investigated. In this study we aim to analyze association between anti-HCV therapy and tumor pattern of HCV related HCC patients. METHODS Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) patients with seropositivity for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies, registered at three tertiary care hospitals of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan during August 2017 to July 2018 were enrolled. Selected patients were then segregated in two groups on the basis of their HCV treatment history i.e., "TN" (HCV Treatment Naïve i.e. having no history/medical record for treatment prior to HCC diagnosis) and "TH" (Treated for HCV infection). Aggressiveness index (AgI) scoring system was applied to determine the tumor pattern. Univariate and multivariate analysis was carried out to analyze the independent effect of anti-HCV therapy on tumor pattern. RESULTS Out of 234 consecutive HCC patients, 171 HCV-related HCC patients were enrolled in final analysis and labeled as "TN" (n = 120) and "TH" (n = 51). Tumor pattern was found to be significantly aggressive (P = 0.02) in the treated cohort with an adjusted odds of 2.47 for aggressive and 6.92 for highly aggressive tumor. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was strongly associated with highly aggressive tumor pattern (P = 0.012). Patients in TN group were found to be marginally older than those in the TH group (59.5 vs. 55 years) where mean age of the patients treated with direct acting anti-viral agents was found to be visibly lower than mean age of patients who received interferon based treatment (53.5 vs. 57 years) with significant masculine predominance (62.1 vs. 37.9%, P = 0.049). CONCLUSION We observed raised neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and prominence of younger age with aggressive tumor biology in HCV treated HCC patients. These observations highlight the need for a longitudinal prospective study on HCV positive subjects treated with antivirals, irrespective of treatment response.

Comparison of clinical features and outcomes between HBV-related and non-B non-C hepatocellular carcinoma. Infect Agent Cancer 2020; 15:11. Abstract
Objective To evaluate the difference between hepatitis B virus related hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) and non-HBV non-HCV hepatocellular carcinoma (NBNC-HCC) patients based on clinical features and prognosis. Methods A total of 175 patients with HCC were enrolled. Patients’ characteristics were extracted from medical records. Among them, 107 patients were positive for HBsAg and negative for HCV-Ab while 68 patients were negative for HBsAg and HCV-Ab. Results The patients in the NBNC-HCC group were significantly older than those in the HBV-HCC group (P = 0.045). Moreover, vascular invasion was found in 23.4% of HBV-HCC patients, which was significantly higher than that in the NBNC-HCC patients with 10.3% (P = 0.029). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that HBV-HCC patients had significantly worse outcomes in terms of overall survival (P = 0.036). Compared with the NBNC-HCC patients, the HBV-HCC patients had a significantly worse disease-free survival (P = 0.0018). The multivariate analysis results indicated that TNM stage (HR = 1.541, 95%CI 1.072–2.412, P = 0.002) and HBV infection (HR = 1.087, 95%CI 1.012–1.655, P = 0.042) were independent risk variables for overall survival. While vascular invasion (HR = 1.562, 95%CI 1.013–2.815, P = 0.042) and HBV infection (HR = 1.650, 95%CI 1.017–2.676, P = 0.037) were independent risk factors associated with disease-free survival. Conclusion Our data revealed that HBV-HCC is more common in young males with vascular invasion, while NBNC-HCC occurs mostly in elderly patients, and overall survival rate is significantly better than that of HBV-HCC. Our study therefore provides evidence that patients with HBV-HCC require closer follow-up due to their poor prognosis.

Abstract
Background The clinical manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with hepatitis B virus (HBV) varies significantly between patients treated with or without nucleos(t) ide analog (NUC) therapy. To have a better understanding of HCC with HBV, we compared the clinical features of patients with HCC receiving or not receiving NUC therapy. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 76 patients with HBV-caused HCC who received treatment at the Hunan Provincial Peoples' Hospital starting from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2017. They were categorized into two groups, namely, NUC group and non-NUC group, based on whether they had received NUC therapy or not. Results The percentage of liver pain (36.36% vs. 79.07%; p < 0.05) and appetite loss (30.30% vs. 70.27%; p < 0.05) in the NUC group was lower than that in the non-NUC group. We observed a similar trend for the percentage of undetectable HBV-DNA (11.63% vs. 63.64%; p < 0.05) and normal ALT (25.58% vs. 75.76%; p < 0.05) between non-NUC and NUC groups. There were no significant differences between the two groups with respect to TBiL (p = 0.370) and ALB (p = 0.475). The same trend was observed for the proportion of HBeAg negative (p = 0.719) and AFP ≤ 14.65 ng/mL (p = 0.199) in both groups. Single tumor nodule was more common in the NUC group compared to the non-NUC group (66.67% vs. 6.98%; p < 0.05). An opposite trend was observed for portal vein invasion (18.18% vs. 79.07%; p < 0.05) and metastasis (0% vs. 44.19%; p < 0.05). Conclusions Nucleos(t) ide analog therapy exerts a significant impact on the clinical and radiological characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma with HBV. Patients receiving nucleos(t) ide analog therapy were found to have milder symptoms and fewer radiographic findings.

Abstract
Background In this study, we aim to determine the hepatic pathological changes in HBV DNA-negative chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) patients after 12-month antiviral therapy. Methods Blood routine indicators including platelet count (PLT) and white blood cell (WBC) were determined. The coagulation function was evaluated by determining the prothrombin time (PT) and prothrombin time activity (PTA), together with the HBV DNA quantification and alpha fetoprotein (AFP). The virology data included hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)/antibodies against hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs), hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)/antibodies against hepatitis B e antigen (anti-HBe) and antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were tested. Pathological assay was performed to the liver puncture tissues. Based on the HBV DNA data in the 12-month follow-up of the cases that received anti-viral therapy during this time, the experimental group was divided into group A (HBV DNA negative at the baseline level, HBV DNA negative after 12 months, N = 79) and group B (HBV DNA negative at the baseline level, HBV DNA turning to be positive after 12 months, N = 13). Statistical analysis was performed on the each test index of the two groups. Results The inflammation grade of group A showed significant improvement after 12-month treatment (P < 0.05). The pathological inflammation grade of group B was increased after one year, and the liver function indices and the PTA (P < 0.05) levels were all increased. Pathological results indicated that the proportion of disease progression in group A was decreased after 12-month follow-up while that proportion was increased in group B. Significant differences were noticed in AFP levels between the patients with progression in group A and those with progression in group B. Conclusion Negative HBV DNA does not mean a controlled hepatitis B. Hepatitis B patients transferred to HBV DNA positivity during the anti-viral therapy are easily to show disease progression, and then special attention should be paid to the HBV DNA monitoring. Meanwhile, close monitoring to the changes of liver function, PTA and AFP levels may help to detect changes on the disease in a timely manner.

Abstract
Background and aim Hepatitis B caused by HBV is a serious public health hazard prevalent worldwide including Bangladesh. Few scattered molecular studies of HBV have been reported in Bangladesh. This study aimed to analyze the genetic variability of RT/HBsAg overlapping region of HBV isolates of Bangladesh and determination of correlation among the genotype/serotype and HBsAg escape and/or drug-resistant mutations. Methods A total of 97 complete HBsAg sequences of Bangladeshi HBV isolates from 2005 to 2017 from NCBI GenBank were extracted and analyzed using several HBV bioinformatics tools such as Geno2pheno-HBV, HBV Serotyper, HIV-Grade:HBV-Tool, and CLC sequence viewer. Results The prevalence of genotypes A, C, and D are 18, 46 and 35% which correspond to serotype adw, adr, and ayw, respectively. The prevalence of HBsAg escape mutations is 51% and most of which (62%) are found in the genotype D followed by 32% in genotype C and 6% in genotype A. Interestingly most (24/36) of the sequences of HBsAg escape mutations contained 128 V mutant which all belongs to only serotype ayw3 (Genotype D). Prevalence of drug-resistant mutations is ~ 11%, most of which are from genotype C (63.64%) and D (36.36%). Lamivudine resistant mutations were found in ~ 11% of sequences followed by Telbivudine 10% and Adefovir 3% where Tenofovir showed susceptibility to all 97 sequences. Moreover, 7 among of 97 sequences showed both HBsAg and drugs resistant mutations and none of them are found due to the same nucleotide substitutions. Conclusion There is a strong correlation among the genotype/serotype and HBsAg escape and/or drug-resistant mutations. This meta-analytical review will be helpful for genotype-serotype prediction by PCR-based diagnosis and development of vaccine and/or diagnostic kits, and the treatment against HBV infection in the future.

Abstract
The hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a globally distributed agent, and its genetic variability allows for it to be organized into eight genotypes with different geographic distributions. In South America, genotype 3 (HDV-3) is frequently isolated and responsible for the most severe form of infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the evolutionary and epidemiological dynamics of HDV-3 over the years and to describe its distribution throughout this continent in an evolutionary perspective. While using Bayesian analysis, with strains being deposited in the Nucleotide database, the most recent common ancestor was dated back to 1964 and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the dispersion may have started in Brazil, spreading to Venezuela and then to Colombia, respectively. Exponential growth in the effective number of infections was observed between the 1950s and 1970s, years after the first report of the presence of HDV on the continent, during the Labrea Black Fever outbreak, which showed that the virus continued to spread, increasing the number of cases decades after the first reports. Subsequently, the analysis showed a decrease in the epidemiological levels of HDV, which was probably due to the implantation of the vaccine against its helper virus, hepatitis B virus, and serological screening methods implemented in the blood banks.

Abstract
Background: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators in the modulation of virus infection by targeting mRNA transcription. However, their roles in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remain to be elucidated. Objective: The study aimed to explore the lncRNAs and mRNA expression profiles in CHB and asymp-tomatic HBsAg carriers (ASC) and construct mRNA-lncRNA co-expression profile and ceRNA net-works to identify the potential targets of diagnosis and treatment in CHB. Methods: We determined the expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs in CHB and ASC using mi-croarray analysis. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) path-way enrichment analyses were performed to explore their function. We also constructed co-expression, cis-regulatory, and competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks with bioinformatics methods. Results: We identified 1634 mRNAs and 5550 lncRNAs that were differentially expressed between CHB and ASC. Significantly enriched GO terms and pathways were identified, many of which were linked to immune processes and inflammatory responses. Co-expression analysis showed 1196 relation-ships between the top 20 up/downregulated lncRNAs and mRNA, especially 213 lncRNAs interacted with ZFP57. The ZFP57-specific ceRNA network covered 3 lncRNAs, 5 miRNAs, and 17 edges. Cis-correlation analysis showed that lncRNA T039096 was paired with the most differentially expressed gene, ZFP57. Moreover, by expending the clinical samples size, the qRT-PCR results showed that the expression of ZFP57 and T039096 increased in CHB compared to ASC. Conclusion: Our study provides insights into the roles of mRNA and lncRNA networks in CHB, high-lighting potential applications of lncRNA-T039096 and mRNA-ZFP57 for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a small defective virus that needs hepatitis B virus (HBV) to replicate and propagate. HDV infection affects 20-40 million people worldwide and pegylated interferon (PegIFN) is the only recommended therapy. There is limited data on the contribution of HDV infection to HBV-related liver disease or liver cancer. Evidence from retrospective and cohort studies suggests that HBV/HDV coinfection accelerates progression to cirrhosis and is associated with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development compared to HBV monoinfection. Although the life cycle of HDV is relatively well known, there is only ancillary information on the molecular mechanisms that can drive specific HDV-related oncogenesis. No thorough reports on the specific landscape of mutations or molecular classes of HDV-related HCC have been published. This information could be critical to better understand the uniqueness, if any, of HDV-related HCC and help identify novel targetable mutations. Herein, we review the evidence supporting an oncogenic role of HDV, the main reported mechanisms of HDV involvement and their impact on HCC development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The highest burden of disease from hepatitis C virus (HCV) is found in Southeast Asia, but our understanding of the epidemiology of infection in many heavily burdened countries is still limited. In particular, there is relatively little data on acute HCV infection, the outcome of which can be influenced by both viral and host genetics which differ within the region. We studied HCV genotype and IL28B gene polymorphism in a cohort of acute HCV-infected patients in Southern Vietnam alongside two other cohorts of chronic HCV-infected patients to better understand the epidemiology of HCV infection locally and inform the development of programs for therapy with the increasing availability of directly acting antiviral therapy (DAAs). METHODS We analysed plasma samples from patients with acute and chronic HCV infection, including chronic HCV mono-infection and chronic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-HCV coinfection, who enrolled in four epidemiological or clinical research studies. HCV infection was confirmed with RNA testing. The 5' UTR, core and NSB5 regions of HCV RNA positive samples were sequenced, and the genotype and subtype of the viral strains were determined. Host DNA from all HCV positive patients and age- and sex-matched non-HCV-infected control individuals were analysed for IL28B single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs12979860 and rs8099917). Geolocation of the patients were mapped using QGIS. RESULTS 355 HCV antibody positive patients were analysed; 54.6% (194/355) and 46.4% (161/355) were acute and chronic infections, respectively. 50.4% (81/161) and 49.6.4% (80/161) of chronic infections had HCV mono-infection and HIV-HCV coinfection, respectively. 88.7% (315/355) and 10.1% (36/355) of the patients were from southern and central regions of Vietnam, respectively. 92.4% (328/355) of patients were HCV RNA positive, including 86.1% (167/194) acute and 100% (161/161) chronic infections. Genotype could be determined in 98.4% (322/328) patients. Genotypes 1 (56.5%; 182/322) and 6 (33.9%; 109/322) predominated. Genotype 1 including genotype 1a was significantly higher in HIV-HCV coinfected patients compared to acute HCV patients [43.8% (35/80) versus 20.5% (33/167)], (p = <0.001), while genotype 6 was significantly higher in chronic HCV mono-infected patients [(44.4% (36/81) versus 20.0% (16/80)] (p = < 0.004) compared to HIV-HCV coinfected patients. The prevalence of IL28B SNP (rs12979860) homozygous CC was 86.46% (83/96) in control individuals and was significantly higher in acutely-infected compared to chronically-infected patients [93.2 (82/88) versus 76.1% (35/46)] (p = < 0.005). CONCLUSION HCV genotype 6 is highly prevalent in Vietnam and the high prevalence in treatment naïve chronic HCV patients may results from poor spontaneous clearance of acute HCV infection with genotype 6.

Mounting evidence had provided that the HBV integration might be a critical con-tributor of HCC carcinogenesis. Objective and Methods: To explore the profile of HBV integration in the plasma DNA, the method of next-generation sequencing, HBV capture and bioinformatics had been employed to screen for HBV in-tegration sites in the plasma samples. Results: In the initial experiment, a total of 87 breakpoints were detected in the 20 plasma samples. The distribution of breakpoints showed that there was significant enrichment of breakpoints in the region of intron. Furthermore, the HBV breakpoints were prone to occur in the region of X protein (1,700-2,000bp) in the plasma samples. The pathway analysis had revealed that the HBV integrations sites were specifically enriched in the cancer pathway. Conclusion: Altogether, our results had provided direct evidence for the HBV integration in plasma DNA, and they might be potentially useful for future HCC prognosis and diagnosis.

Abstract
Objective To determine the clinical features and survival difference of HBV related and Non-HBV related diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and to evaluate the occurrence of HBV reactivation in DLBCL patients and related risk factors for HBV reactivation after R-CHOP therapy. Methods A total of 246 patients diagnosed with CD20+ DLBCL were enrolled from June 2010 to June 2015. The medical records and survival data were analysed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of HBV reactivation. Survival curves were performed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Results Among patients enrolled, 80 patients were HBsAg sero-positive and 166 patients were HBsAg sero-negative. Findings showed that HBsAg sero-negative patients were significantly older than that of patients with HBsAg sero-positive (P < 0.001). Proportion of B symptom positive patients in HBsAg sero-positive were higher (p = 0.002). Higher LDH level (P = 0.019) and late Ann Arbor stage (P = 0.010) were more often observed in patients with HBsAg sero-positive. The rate of complete response, partial response, stable disease and progress disease in HBsAg sero-negative group were 63.9, 16.9, 1.1 and 18.1%, respective, which is significantly higher than that in HBsAg sero-positive group (36.2, 18.8, 1.2 and 43.8%). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that DLBCL patients with HBsAg sero-negative had better prognosis. In total, 17 patients showed HBV reactivation among 166 patients (10.2%) with HBsAg sero-negative after R-CHOP treatment, while a significant higher HBV reactivation 18.75% (9/48) in HBsAb negative group were observed, with 8.25% (8/97) patients in HBsAb level 10-100 U/mL group, and 0% patients in HBsAb level higher than 100 U/mL group. Multivariable analysis showed that serum HBsAb and serum HBcAb were independent risk factors for HBV reactivation in DLBCL patients. Conclusion Our data revealed that characteristics and prognosis were significantly different between HBV related DLBCL than non-HBV related DLBCL patients. DLBCL patients with resolved hepatitis B are at a higher risk of developing HBV reactivation after R-CHOP chemotherapy compared with HBsAg-negative/HBcAb negative patients.

Abstract
The severity of hepatic pathology and the response to treatment depend on the hepatitis virus genotype in the infected host. The objective of this review was to determine the distribution of hepatitis virus genotypes in West African countries. A systematic review of the literature in PubMed, Google Scholar and Science Direct was performed to identify 52 relevant articles reporting hepatitis A, B, C, D, E and G viruses genotypes. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype E with a prevalence of 90.6% (95%CI: 0.891-0.920) found in this review, is characterized by low genetic diversity. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes 1 and 2 represented 96.4% of HCV infections in West African countries, while hepatitis delta virus, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis G virus genotypes 1 and HEV genotype 3 were reported in some studies in Ghana and Nigeria. HBV genotype E is characterized by high prevalence, low genetic diversity and wide geographical distribution. Further studies on the clinical implications of HBV genotype E and HCV genotypes 1 and 2 are needed for the development of an effective treatment against this viral hepatitis in West African countries. Surveillance of the distribution of different genotypes is also needed to reduce recombination rates and prevent the emergence of more virulent viral strains.

Abstract
Background The impact of different anti-virus regimens on prognosis of Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) related cirrhosis remains to be explored. We aim to investigate whether CHB-related HCC patients receiving nucleoside analogue regimen or not have a different prognosis. Methods Two hundred forty-two CHB-related compensated cirrhosis patients were attributed into groups regarding their anti-virus regimens containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) or not. The results of two groups were reviewed and investigated. The probability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development among each group were analyzed and compared. Results Two hundred forty-two CHB-related compensated cirrhosis patients from 2008 June to 2011 December were included in our study. One hundred twenty-seven patients received anti-virus regimen containing TDF and 115 patients received anti-virus regimen without TDF. Child-Pugh score, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin level, status of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and serum HBV DNA level were compared between groups. The cumulative probability of HCC development in TDF-contained group were significantly lower than it in non-TDF-contained group (p < 0.05). Multi-variant analysis indicated that TDF-containing regimen treatment was significantly associated with lower probability of HCC development, (hazard ratio, 0.18; 95% confidence interval range, 0.07-0.45, p < 0.05). Conclusion Anti-virus regimen containing TDF benefits for the prognosis of CHB-related liver cirrhosis patients.
