Influence of Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups on the Environmental Properties, Transformations, and Toxicity of Carbon Nanotubes

Cotransport of nanoplastics and plastic additive bisphenol AF (BPAF) in unsaturated hyporheic zone: Coupling effects of surface functionalization and protein corona

The ecological risk of combined pollution from microplastics (MPs) and associated contaminants usually depends on their interactions and environmental behavior, which was also disturbed by varying surface modifications of MPs. In this study, the significance of surface functionalization and protein-corona on the cotransport of nanoplastics (NPs; 100 nm) and the related additive bisphenol AF (BPAF) was examined in simulated unsaturated hyporheic zone (quartz sand; 250-425 μm). The electronegative bovine serum albumin (BSA) and electropositive trypsin were chosen as representative proteins, while pristine (PNPs), amino-modified (ANPs), and carboxyl-modified NPs (CNPs) were representative NPs with different charges. The presence of BPAF inhibited the mobility of PNPs/CNPs, but enhanced the release of ANPs in hyporheic zone, which was mainly related to their hydrophobicity changes and electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, the NPs with high mobility and strong affinity to BPAF became effective carriers, promoting the cotransport of BPAF by 16.4 %-26.4 %. The formation of protein-coronas altered the mobility of NPs alone and their cotransport with BPAF, exhibiting a coupling effect with functional groups. BSA-corona promoted the transport of PNPs/CNPs, but this promoting effect was weakened by the presence of BPAF via increasing particle aggregation and hydrophobicity. Inversely, trypsin-corona aggravated the deposition of PNPs/CNPs, but competition deposition sites and increased energy barrier caused by coexisting BPAF reversed this effect, facilitating the cotransport of trypsin-PNPs/CNPs in hyporheic zone. However, BPAF and protein-coronas synergistically promoted the mobility of ANPs, owing to competition deposition sites and decreased electrostatic attraction. Although all of the NPs with two protein-coronas reduced dissolved BPAF in the effluents via providing deposition sites, the cotransport of total BPAF was improved by the NPs with high mobility (BSA-PNPs/CNPs) or high affinity to BPAF (BSA/trypsin-ANPs). However, the trypsin-PNPs/CNPs inhibited the transport of BPAF due to their weak mobility and adsorption with BPAF. The results provide new insights into the role of varying surface modifications on NPs in the vertical cotransport of NPs and associated contaminants in unsaturated hyporheic zone.

Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks in Adsorption and Catalysis

The ion extraction and electro/photo catalysis are promising methods to address environmental and energy issues. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of promising template to construct absorbents and catalysts because of their stable frameworks, high surface areas, controllable pore environments, and well-defined catalytic sites. Among them, ionic COFs as unique class of crystalline porous materials, with charges in the frameworks or along the pore walls, have shown different properties and resulting performance in these applications with those from charge-neutral COFs. In this review, current research progress based on the ionic COFs for ion extraction and energy conversion, including cationic/anionic materials and electro/photo catalysis is reviewed in terms of the synthesis strategy, modification methods, mechanisms of adsorption and catalysis, as well as applications. Finally, we demonstrated the current challenges and future development of ionic COFs in design strategies and applications.

New Insights into Aggregation Behaviors of the UV-Irradiated Dissolved Biochars (DBioCs) in Aqueous Environments: Effects of Water Chemistries and Variation in the Hamaker Constant

The aggregation behavior of ubiquitous dissolved black carbon (DBC) largely affects the fate and transport of its own contaminants and the attached contaminants. However, the photoaging processes and resulting effects on its colloidal stability remain yet unknown. Herein, dissolved biochars (DBioCs) were extracted from common wheat straw biochar as a proxy for an anthropogenic DBC. The influences of UV radiation on their aggregation kinetics were systematically investigated under various water chemistries (pH, electrolytes, and protein). The environmental stability of the DBioCs before and after radiation was further verified in two natural water samples. Hamaker constants of pristine and photoaged DBioCs were derived according to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) prediction, and its attenuation (3.19 ± 0.15 × 10-21 J to 1.55 ± 0.07 × 10-21 J after 7 days of radiation) was described with decay kinetic models. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the surface properties and aggregation behaviors of DBioCs were significantly correlated with radiation time (p < 0.05), indicating its profound effects. Based on characterization and experimental results, we proposed a three-stage mechanism (contended by photodecarboxylation, photo-oxidation, and mineral exposure) that DBioCs might experience under UV radiation. These findings would provide an important reference for potential phototransformation processes and relevant behavioral changes that DBC may encounter.

Biopolymeric Nanocomposites for CO2 Capture

Carbon dioxide (CO2) impacts the greenhouse effect significantly and results in global warming, prompting urgent attention to climate change concerns. In response, CO2 capture has emerged as a crucial process to capture carbon produced in industrial and power processes before its release into the atmosphere. The main aim of CO2 capture is to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gas and reduce the anthropogenic impact on climate change. Biopolymer nanocomposites offer a promising avenue for CO2 capture due to their renewable nature. These composites consist of biopolymers derived from biological sources and nanofillers like nanoparticles and nanotubes, enhancing the properties of the composite. Various biopolymers like chitosan, cellulose, carrageenan, and others, possessing unique functional groups, can interact with CO2 molecules. Nanofillers are incorporated to improve mechanical, thermal, and sorption properties, with materials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and metallic nanoparticles enhancing surface area and porosity. The CO2 capture mechanism within biopolymer nanocomposites involves physical absorption, chemisorption, and physisorption, driven by functional groups like amino and hydroxyl groups in the biopolymer matrix. The integration of nanofillers further boosts CO2 adsorption capacity by increasing surface area and porosity. Numerous advanced materials, including biopolymeric derivatives like cellulose, alginate, and chitosan, are developed for CO2 capture technology, offering accessibility and cost-effectiveness. This semi-systematic literature review focuses on recent studies involving biopolymer-based materials for CO2 capture, providing an overview of composite materials enriched with nanomaterials, specifically based on cellulose, alginate, chitosan, and carrageenan; the choice of these biopolymers is dictated by the lack of a literature perspective focused on a currently relevant topic such as these biorenewable resources in the framework of carbon capture. The production and efficacy of biopolymer-based adsorbents and membranes are examined, shedding light on potential trends in global CO2 capture technology enhancement.

Enhanced copper removal by magnesium modified biochar derived from Alternanthera philoxeroides

Adsorption processes are being widely used by various researchers for the removal of heavy metals from waste streams and biochar has been frequently used as an adsorbent. In this study, a MgO-loaded biochar derived from Alternanthera philoxeroides (MAPB) was synthesized for the removal of Cu(II). Compared with other biochar absorbents, MAPB showed a relatively slow adsorption kinetics, but an effective removal of Cu(II) with a maximum sorption capacity of 1, 238 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) by MAPB was mainly controlled by chemical precipitation as Cu2(OH)3NO3, complexation and ion replacement. Fixed bed column with MAPB packed in same dosage (1, 000 mg) and different bed depth (1.3, 2.6 and 3.9 cm) showed that the increased of bed depth by mixing MAPB with quartz sand could increase the removal of Cu(II). The fitted breakthrough (BT) models showed that mixing MAPB with support media could reduce the mass transfer rate, increase the dynamic adsorption capacity and BT time. Therefore, MAPB adsorbent act as a highly efficient long-term adsorbent for Cu(II) contaminated water treatment may have great ecological and environmental significance.

Bottom-Up Magnesium Deposition Induced by Paper-Based Triple-Gradient Scaffolds toward Flexible Magnesium Metal Batteries

The development of advanced magnesium metal batteries (MMBs) has been hindered by longstanding challenges, such as the inability to induce uniform magnesium (Mg) nucleation and the inefficient utilization of Mg foil. This study introduces a novel solution in the form of a flexible, lightweight, paper-based scaffold that incorporates gradient conductivity, magnesiophilicity, and pore size. This design is achieved through an industrially adaptable papermaking process in which the ratio of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes to softwood cellulose fibers is meticulously adjusted. The triple-gradient structure of the scaffold enables the regulation of Mg ion flux, promoting bottom-up Mg deposition. Owing to its high flexibility, low thickness, and reduced density, the scaffold has potential applications in flexible and wearable electronics. Accordingly, the triple-gradient electrodes exhibit stable operation for over 1200 h at 3 mA cm-2 /3 mAh cm-2 in symmetrical cells, markedly outperforming the non-gradient and metallic Mg alternatives. Notably, this study marks the first successful fabrication of a flexible MMB pouch full cell, achieving an impressive volumetric energy density of 244 Wh L-1 . The simplicity and scalability of the triple-gradient design, which uses readily available materials through an industrially compatible papermaking process, open new doors for the production of flexible, high-energy-density metal batteries.

Utilization of carbon-based nanomaterials for wastewater treatment and biogas enhancement: A state-of-the-art review

The management of environmental pollution and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a challenge that has spurred increased research interest in determining sustainable alternatives to decrease biowaste. This state-of-the-art review aimed to describe the preparation and utilization of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNM) for biogas enhancement and wastewater contaminant (dyes, color, and dust particles) removal. The novelty of this review is that we elucidated that the performance of CNMs in the anaerobic digestion (AD) varies from one system to another. In addition, this review revealed that increasing the pyrolysis temperature can facilitate the transition from one CNM type to another and outlined the methods that can be used to develop CNMs, including arc discharge, chemical exfoliation, and laser ablation. In addition, this study showed that methane (CH4) yield can be slightly increased (e.g. from 33.6% to 60.89%) depending on certain CNM factors, including its type, concentration, and feedstock. Temperature is a fundamental factor involved in the method and carbon sources used for CNM synthesis. This review determined that graphene oxide is not a good additive for biogas and CH4 yield improvement compared with other types of CNM, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. The efficacy of CNMs in wastewater treatment depends on the temperature and pH of the solution. Therefore, CNMs are good adsorbents for wastewater contaminant removal and are a promising alternative for CO2 emissions reduction. Further research is necessary to determine the relationship between CNM synthesis and preparation costs while accounting for other factors such as gas flow, feedstock, consumption time, and energy consumption.

SnO2/SnS heterojunction anchoring on CMK-3 mesoporous network improves the reversibility of conversion reaction for lithium/sodium ions storage

Tin oxide-based (SnO2) materials show high theoretical capacity for lithium and sodium storage benefiting from a double-reaction mechanism of conversion and alloying reactions. However, due to the limitation of the reaction thermodynamics and kinetics, the conversion reaction process of SnO2usually shows irreversibility, resulting in serious capacity decay and hindering the further application of the SnO2anode. Herein, SnO2/SnS heterojunction was anchored on the surface and inside of CMK-3 byinsitusynthesis method, forming a stable 3D structural material (SnO2/SnS@CMK-3). The electrochemical properties of SnO2/SnS@CMK-3 composite show high capacity and reversible conversion reaction, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of CMK-3 and SnO2/SnS heterojunction. To further investigate the influence of the heterojunction on the reversibility of the conversion reaction, the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) was calculated using density functional theory. The results show that SnO2/SnS heterojunction has a closer to zero ΔGfor lithium/sodium ion batteries compared to SnO2, indicating that the heterojunction enhances the reversibility of the conversion reaction in chemical reaction thermodynamics. Our work provides insights into the reversibility of the conversion reaction of SnO2-based materials, which is essential for improving their electrochemical performance.

Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Sensors for Food Safety Applications

Considering the increasing concern for food safety, electrochemical methods for detecting specific ingredients in the food are currently the most efficient method due to their low cost, fast response signal, high sensitivity, and ease of use. The detection efficiency of electrochemical sensors is determined by the electrode materials' electrochemical characteristics. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) electrodes have unique advantages in electronic transfer, adsorption capacity and exposure of active sites for energy storage, novel materials, and electrochemical sensing. Therefore, this review begins by outlining the benefits and drawbacks of 3D electrodes compared to other materials before going into more detail about how 3D materials are synthesized. Next, different types of 3D electrodes are outlined together with common modification techniques for enhancing electrochemical performance. After this, a demonstration of 3D electrochemical sensors for food safety applications, such as detecting components, additives, emerging pollutants, and bacteria in food, was given. Finally, improvement measures and development directions of electrodes with 3D electrochemical sensors are discussed. We think that this review will help with the creation of new 3D electrodes and offer fresh perspectives on how to achieve extremely sensitive electrochemical detection in the area of food safety.

Recent Advances and Perspectives on Supported Catalysts for Heterogeneous Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Borane

Ammonia borane (AB), a liquid hydrogen storage material, has attracted increasing attention for hydrogen utilization because of its high hydrogen content. However, the slow kinetics of AB hydrolysis and the indefinite catalytic mechanism remain significant problems for its large-scale practical application. Thus, the development of efficient AB hydrolysis catalysts and the determination of their catalytic mechanisms are significant and urgent. A summary of the preparation process and structural characteristics of various supported catalysts is presented in this paper, including graphite, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal oxides, carbon nitride (CN), molybdenum carbide (MoC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), boron nitride (h-BN), zeolites, carbon dots (CDs), and metal carbide and nitride (MXene). In addition, the relationship between the electronic structure and catalytic performance is discussed to ascertain the actual active sites in the catalytic process. The mechanism of AB hydrolysis catalysis is systematically discussed, and possible catalytic paths are summarized to provide theoretical considerations for the designing of efficient AB hydrolysis catalysts. Furthermore, three methods for stimulating AB from dehydrogenation by-products and the design of possible hydrogen product-regeneration systems are summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and future research directions for the effective development of AB catalysts are discussed.

Transport of Microplastic and Dispersed Oil Co-contaminants in the Marine Environment

Microplastics (MPs) and oil pollution are major concerns in oceans. Although their coexistence in oceans and the associated MP-oil-dispersant agglomerates (MODAs) have been reported, limited attention is given to the behavior of the co-contaminants. This study investigated MODA transport in a simulated ocean system and explored related mechanisms under various oil types, salinities, and mineral concentrations. We found that more than 90% of the heavy oil-formed MODAs stayed at the seawater surface, while the light oil-formed MODAs were widely distributed throughout the seawater column. The increased salinity promoted MODAs formed by 7 and 90 μm MPs to transport from the seawater surface to the column. This was elucidated by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory as more MODAs formed under higher salinities and dispersants kept them stable in the seawater column. Minerals facilitated the sinking of large MP-formed MODAs (e.g., 40 μm) as minerals were adsorbed on the MODA surface, but their impact on small MP-formed MODAs (e.g., 7 μm) was negligible. A MODA-mineral system was proposed to explain their interaction. Rubey's equation was recommended to predict the sinking velocity of MODAs. This study is the first attempt to reveal MODA transport. Findings will contribute to the model development to facilitate their environmental risk evaluation in oceans.

Carbon-Hybridized Hydroxides for Energy Conversion and Storage: Interface Chemistry and Manufacturing

Carbon-hybridized hydroxides (CHHs) have been intensively investigated for uses in the energy conversion/storage fields. Nevertheless, the intrinsic structure-activity relationships between carbon and hydroxides within CHHs are still blurry, which hinders the fine modulation of CHHs in terms of practical applications to some degree. This review aims to figure out the intrinsic role of carbon materials in CHHs with a focus on the interface chemistry and the engineering strategy in-between two components. The fundamental effects of the carbon materials in enhancing the charge/mass transfer kinetics are first analyzed, particularly the extra electron pathways for fast charge transfer and the anchoring sites for boosting the mass transfer. Subsequently, the surface-guided/confined effects of carbon materials in CHHs to modify the morphology and tailor the hydroxides, and functional heterojunction for regulating the inner electronic structure are decoupled. The methods to efficiently construct a stable yet robust solid-solid heterointerface are summarized, including oxygen functional groups engrafting, topological defective sites construction and heteroatom incorporation to activate the inert carbon surface. The smart CHHs in some typical energy applications are demonstrated. Additionally, the methodologies that can reveal the hybridization electron configuration between two components are summed up. At last, the perspective and challenges faced by the CHHs for energy-related applications are outlined.

Recent advances in new generation nanocomposite materials for adsorption of pharmaceuticals from aqueous environment

With rapid increase in the human population, a large amount of wastewater is generated every year. The availability of fresh water is decreasing at an alarming rate due to rapid industrialization and agricultural development. Pharmaceutical drugs which are credited for improving standards of life worldwide have emerged as major water contaminants, raising global concern about their potential risk to human health and environment. The presence of pharmaceutical compounds is detected in surface water (sea, river, lakes, etc.), groundwater, effluents from municipal, hospitals, and wastewater treatment plants, and even in drinking water. Efficient removal of pharmaceutical pollutants still remains a challenging task. Many techniques, including photodegradation, photocatalysis, oxidation, reverse osmosis, biodegradation, nanofiltration, adsorption, etc., have been used for the remediation of wastewater. Adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds on nanoadsorbents, as a low-cost and feasible technology, has gained immense popularity for wastewater treatment over the last decade. Adsorption techniques can be integrated with wastewater treatment plants to achieve efficient removal on an industrial level. Herein, we review the literature on the remediation techniques used for the pharmaceutical waste treatment using carbon nanotubes, metal oxides, nanoclay, and new-generation MXenes via adsorption. These materials show excellent adsorptive properties owing to their high surface area, low cost, high porosity, easy functionalization, and high surface reactivity. The adsorption mechanism of the nanoadsorbents and their reusability as a factor of sustainability have also been included in the review. The factors affecting the adsorption, including pH, the concentration of adsorbate, ionic strength, and adsorbate dose, have also been discussed.

Stability of Aqueous Suspensions of COOH-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes to Organic Solvents, Esterification, and Decarboxylation

Carbon nanotubes are among the most widely used nanosystems, and stability of carbon nanotube suspensions is critical for nanotechnology and environmental science. Remaining in aqueous environment alone misses important factors that regulate colloidal stability in the presence of electrolytes. Indeed, introduction of (80-95) vol % organic solvents leads to sharp changes in suspension properties depending on the solvent. For example, the critical coagulation concentrations for a given inorganic or organic coagulating ion can change by 2 orders of magnitude when going from dimethyl sulfoxide to acetonitrile. We establish and explain these trends by Lewis acid-base interactions and show that a strong interaction extending beyond the standard theory of aggregation plays an important role.

Novel (Pt-Ox )-(Co-Oy ) Nonbonding Active Structures on Defective Carbon from Oxygen-Rich Coal Tar Pitch for Efficient HER and ORR

Atomic-scale utilization and coordination structure of Pt electrocatalyst is extremely crucial to decrease loading mass and maximize activity for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). A novel atomic-scale (Pt-O_x )-(Co-O_y ) nonbonding active structure is designed and constructed by anchoring Pt single atoms and Co atomic clusters on the defective carbon derived from oxygen-rich coal tar pitch (CTP). The Pt loading mass is extremely low and only 0.56 wt%. A new nonbonding interaction phenomenon between Pt-O_x and Co-O_y is found and confirmed based on X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Based on the (Pt-O_x )-(Co-O_y ) nonbonding active structure, surface chemical field coupling with electrocatalysis for the HER and ORR is confirmed. It is found that the (Pt-O_x )-(Co-O_y ) nonbonding active structure exhibits high mass activities of 64.4 A cm^-2 mg_Pt ^-1 (at an overpotential of 100 mV) and 7.2 A cm^-2 mg_Pt ^-1 (at 0.8 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) for the HER and ORR, respectively. The values are 6.5 and 11.6 times as much as those of commercial 20% Pt/C. The work provides innovative insight to design and understand efficient active sites of atomic-scale Pt on oxygen-rich CTP-derived carbon supports for electrocatalysis.

Conductive and Semiconductive Nanocomposite-Based Hydrogels for Cardiac Tissue Engineering

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and the most common cause is myocardial infarction. Therefore, appropriate approaches should be used to repair damaged heart tissue. Recently, cardiac tissue engineering approaches have been extensively studied. Since the creation of the nature of cardiovascular tissue engineering, many advances have been made in cellular and scaffolding technologies. Due to the hydrated and porous structures of the hydrogel, they are used as a support matrix to deliver cells to the infarct tissue. In heart tissue regeneration, bioactive and biodegradable hydrogels are required by simulating native tissue microenvironments to support myocardial wall stress in addition to preserving cells. Recently, the use of nanostructured hydrogels has increased the use of nanocomposite hydrogels and has revolutionized the field of cardiac tissue engineering. Therefore, to overcome the limitation of the use of hydrogels due to their mechanical fragility, various nanoparticles of polymers, metal, and carbon are used in tissue engineering and create a new opportunity to provide hydrogels with excellent properties. Here, the types of synthetic and natural polymer hydrogels, nanocarbon-based hydrogels, and other nanoparticle-based materials used for cardiac tissue engineering with emphasis on conductive nanostructured hydrogels are briefly introduced.

Mechanism for selective binding of aromatic compounds on oxygen-rich graphene nanosheets based on molecule size/polarity matching

Selective binding of organic compounds is the cornerstone of many important industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Here, we achieved highly selective binding of aromatic compounds in aqueous solution and gas phase by oxygen-enriched graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets via a previously unknown mechanism based on size matching and polarity matching. Oxygen-containing functional groups (predominately epoxies and hydroxyls) on the nongraphitized aliphatic carbons of the basal plane of GO formed highly polar regions that encompass graphitic regions slightly larger than the benzene ring. This facilitated size match-based interactions between small apolar compounds and the isolated aromatic region of GO, resulting in high binding selectivity relative to larger apolar compounds. The interactions between the functional group(s) of polar aromatics and the epoxy/hydroxyl groups around the isolated aromatic region of GO enhanced binding selectivity relative to similar-sized apolar aromatics. These findings provide opportunities for precision separations and molecular recognition enabled by size/polarity match-based selectivity.

Toxicity mitigation and biodistribution of albumin corona coated graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes in Caenorhabditis elegans

In this work, the toxicity and biodistribution of graphene oxide (GO) and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were investigated in Caenorhabditis elegans. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was selected as a model protein to evaluate the influence of protein corona formation on materials physicochemical properties, colloidal stability, and toxicity. Biological assays were performed to assess the effects of bare and albumin corona coated materials on survival, oxidative stress, intestinal barrier permeability, growth, reproduction, and fertility. Critical alterations in topography, surface roughness and chemistry of GO and MWCNT were observed due to albumin corona formation. These modifications were associated with changes in colloidal stability of materials and prevention of their aggregation and sedimentation in nematode testing medium. Both GO and MWCNT caused damage to nematode survival, growth, reproduction, and fertility, as well as enhanced oxidative stress and permeability of the intestinal barrier. But GO was more toxic than MWCNT to C. elegans, especially at long-term assays. Albumin corona mitigated 100% of acute and chronic effects of MWCNT. In contrast, the negative effects of GO were not completely mitigated; GO inhibited 16.2% of nematode growth, 86.5% of reproduction, and 32.0% of fertility at the highest concentration evaluated (10 mg L^-1), while corona coated GO mitigated 50% and 100% of fertility and growth, respectively. Confocal Raman spectroscopy imaging was crucial to point out that bare and albumin corona coated GO and MWCNT crossed the C. elegans intestinal barrier reaching its reproductive organs. However, BSA corona protected the nematodes targeted organs from negative effects from MWCNT and blocked its translocation to other tissues, while coated GO was translocated inside the nematode affecting the functionality of crucial organs. In addition, coated MWCNT was excreted after 2 h of food resumption, whereas coated GO still accumulated in the nematode intestine. Our results demonstrate that the materials different translocation and excretion patterns in C. elegans had a relation to the impaired physiological functions of primary and secondary organs. This work is a contribution towards a better understanding of the impacts of protein corona on the toxicity of graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes; essential information for biological applications and nanosafety.

Mechanism of biochar functional groups in the catalytic reduction of tetrachloroethylene by sulfides

In recent years, biochar has become of considerable interest for environmental applications, it can be used as a catalyst for sulfides reduction of perchloroethylene, but the crucial role of biochar properties played in catalyzing dechlorination remained ambiguous investigation. To pinpoint the critical functional groups, the modified biochars were respectively produced by HNO₃, KOH and H₂O₂ with similar dimensional structures but different functional groups. Combined with the adsorption and catalytic results of different biochars, the acid-modified biochar had the best catalytic performance (99.9% removal) due to the outstanding specific surface area and ample functional groups. According to characterization and DFT results, carboxyl and pyridine nitrogen exhibited a positive correlation with the catalytic rate, indicating that their contribution to catalytic performance. Customizing biochar with specific functional groups removed depth demonstrated that the carboxyl was essential component. Further, alkaline condition was conducive to catalytic reduction, while tetrachloroethylene cannot be reduced under acidic conditions, because HS^- and S^2- mainly existed in alkaline environment and the sulfur-containing nucleophilic structure formed with biochar was more stable under this condition. Overall, this study opens new perspectives for in situ remediation by biochar in chlorinated olefin polluted anoxic environment and promotes our insight of modifying for biochar catalyst design.

A critical review on the role of abiotic factors on the transformation, environmental identity and toxicity of engineered nanomaterials in aquatic environment

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are at the forefront of many technological breakthroughs in science and engineering. The extensive use of ENMs in several consumer products has resulted in their release to the aquatic environment. ENMs entering the aquatic ecosystem undergo a dynamic transformation as they interact with organic and inorganic constituents present in aquatic environment, specifically abiotic factors such as NOM and clay minerals, and attain an environmental identity. Thus, a greater understanding of ENM-abiotic factors interactions is required for an improved risk assessment and sustainable management of ENMs contamination in the aquatic environment. This review integrates fundamental aspects of ENMs transformation in aquatic environment as impacted by abiotic factors, and delineates the recent advances in bioavailability and ecotoxicity of ENMs in relation to risk assessment for ENMs-contaminated aquatic ecosystem. It specifically discusses the mechanism of transformation of different ENMs (metals, metal oxides and carbon based nanomaterials) following their interaction with the two most common abiotic factors NOM and clay minerals present within the aquatic ecosystem. The review critically discusses the impact of these mechanisms on the altered ecotoxicity of ENMs including the impact of such transformation at the genomic level. Finally, it identifies the gaps in our current understanding of the role of abiotic factors on the transformation of ENMs and paves the way for the future research areas.

The detection and characterization techniques for the interaction between graphene oxide and natural colloids: A review

The high dispersibility of graphene oxide (GO) and the universality of natural colloids (clay minerals, (hydr)oxides of Al, Fe, silica, etc.) make them interact easily. Many kinds of analytical methods have been used to study the interaction between GO and natural colloids. This review provides a comprehensive overview of analytical methods for the detection and quantification of interaction process. We highlighted the influence of the most relevant environmental factors (ionic strength, pH, etc.) on batch experiment, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring measurements, and column experiments. Besides, the benefits and drawbacks of spectroscopic, microscopic techniques, theoretical models, calculation and time-resolved dynamic light scattering methods also have discussed in this work. This review can give some guidance to researchers in their selection and combination of the technique for the research of the interaction between GO and natural colloids.

The aggregation behaviour and mechanism of commercial graphene oxide in surface aquatic environments

In this study, we comprehensively and critically discuss the aggregation mechanism of commercial graphene oxide (CGO) in surface aquatic environments. The aggregation kinetics and critical coagulation concentration of CGO were obtained through time-resolved dynamic light scattering and batch techniques over a wide range of water types. By employing transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we studied the effects of cations in natural waters on the microstructure transformation, element content and distribution, and oxygen-containing functional group vibrations of CGO. The aggregation of CGO in natural water is induced mainly by Ca²⁺ by complexing; Na⁺, with a higher concentration, plays a more important role than Mg²⁺ in inducing aggregation via electric double layer suppression. Ca²⁺ mainly interacts with C - COOH, while Mg²⁺ has a greater effect on C - OH. Na⁺ has less effect on the oxygen-containing functional group but decreases the C/O ratio in contrast with Mg²⁺/Ca²⁺/natural water, indicating the different inducing mechanisms. This study looks forward to providing pivotal knowledge to predict the environmental fate of CGO more accurately in natural surface water.

Controllability of Graphene Oxide Doxorubicin Loading Capacity Based on Density Functional Theory

Graphene can be used as a drug carrier of doxorubicin (DOX) to reduce the side effects of doxorubicin. However, there is limited research on the surface chemical modifications and biological effects of graphene oxide (GO). Therefore, it is necessary to explore the DOX affinity of different oxygen-containing functional groups in the graphene system. We constructed graphene system models and studied the structure and distribution of epoxy and hydroxyl groups on the carbon surface. Based on molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the interaction between DOX and either pristine graphene or GO with different ratios of oxygen-containing groups. The hydroxyl groups exhibited a stronger affinity for DOX than the epoxy groups. Therefore, the DOX loading capacity of graphene systems can be adjusted by increasing the ratio of hydroxyl to epoxy groups on the carbon surface.

Carbon Nanomaterials (CNMs) and Enzymes: From Nanozymes to CNM-Enzyme Conjugates and Biodegradation

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) and enzymes differ significantly in terms of their physico-chemical properties—their handling and characterization require very different specialized skills. Therefore, their combination is not trivial. Numerous studies exist at the interface between these two components—especially in the area of sensing—but also involving biofuel cells, biocatalysis, and even biomedical applications including innovative therapeutic approaches and theranostics. Finally, enzymes that are capable of biodegrading CNMs have been identified, and they may play an important role in controlling the environmental fate of these structures after their use. CNMs’ widespread use has created more and more opportunities for their entry into the environment, and thus it becomes increasingly important to understand how to biodegrade them. In this concise review, we will cover the progress made in the last five years on this exciting topic, focusing on the applications, and concluding with future perspectives on research combining carbon nanomaterials and enzymes.

Fabrication of highly-conductive porous capacitor electrodes by the insertion of Cu-nanoparticles into N-doped flocculated carbon catalysts

In carbon-based electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC), an ideal electrode should have convenient mass transport, ensuring rich porosity and rapid electron transfer, guaranteeing the electrode bulk's high conductivity. In this study, ultrafine Cu nanoparticles inserted carbon flocculation is formed on carbon cloth using polydopamine and cupric chloride precursors via pyrolysis and electrochemical oxidation reaction. As a result, the obtained electrode has a large surface area of 55.5 m²g^-1 and high conductivity of 48.7 S/mm, which shows excellent charge storage capability with high specific capacitance of 3546 mF cm^-2 at a current density of 1 mA cm^-2. Moreover, when the as-prepared electrode is used as electrodes in symmetric EDLC, it can provide a high energy density of 23 mWh cm^-3 with a power density of 179 mW cm^-3, making it as a promising carbon electrode for practical EDLCs.

Attaching a Dipeptide to Fullerene as an Antioxidant Hybrid against DNA Oxidation

Emerging evidence has revealed that oxidative damages of DNA correlate with the pathogenesis of some diseases, and numerous investigations have also suggested that supplementation of antioxidants is beneficial for keeping health by rectifying in vivo redox status. Here, we construct antioxidative dipeptides with the Ugi four-component reaction (comprising p-aminobenzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, or vanillin, a series of antioxidative carboxylic acids and isocyanides as reagents) and then attempt to attach the dipeptides to [60]fullerene by the Bingel reaction. However, this endeavor does not lead to the amelioration of the radical-scavenging property because abilities of fullerenyl dipeptides to trap 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and galvinoxyl radicals are still dependent upon the phenolic hydroxyl group in the dipeptide scaffold rather than upon the fullerenyl group. Alternatively, when the obtained fullerenyl dipeptides are evaluated in a peroxyl radical-induced oxidation of DNA, it is found that introducing a fullerene moiety into dipeptide enables antioxidative effect to be enhanced 20-30% because the fullerene moiety facilitates the corresponding dipeptide to intercalate with DNA strands, and thus, to increase the antioxidative efficacy. Our results suggest that connecting an antioxidative skeleton with the hydrophobic fullerene moiety might lead to a series of novel antioxidant hybrids applied for the inhibition of DNA oxidation.

Recent Advances in Functional Carbon Quantum Dots for Antitumour

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are an emerging class of quasi-zero-dimensional photoluminescent nanomaterials with particle sizes less than 10 nm. Owing to their favourable water dispersion, strong chemical inertia, stable optical performance, and good biocompatibility, CQDs have become prominent in biomedical fields. CQDs can be fabricated by “top-down” and “bottom-up” methods, both of which involve oxidation, carbonization, pyrolysis and polymerization. The functions of CQDs include biological imaging, biosensing, drug delivery, gene carrying, antimicrobial performance, photothermal ablation and so on, which enable them to be utilized in antitumour applications. The purpose of this review is to summarize the research progress of CQDs in antitumour applications from preparation and characterization to application prospects. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities of CQDs are discussed along with future perspectives for precise individual therapy of tumours.

Modern Carbon-Based Materials for Adsorptive Removal of Organic and Inorganic Pollutants from Water and Wastewater

Currently, a serious threat for living organisms and human life in particular, is water contamination with persistent organic and inorganic pollutants. To date, several techniques have been adopted to remove/treat organics and toxic contaminants. Adsorption is one of the most effective and economical methods for this purpose. Generally, porous materials are considered as appropriate adsorbents for water purification. Conventional adsorbents such as activated carbons have a limited possibility of surface modification (texture and functionality), and their adsorption capacity is difficult to control. Therefore, despite the significant progress achieved in the development of the systems for water remediation, there is still a need for novel adsorptive materials with tunable functional characteristics. This review addresses the new trends in the development of new adsorbent materials. Herein, modern carbon-based materials, such as graphene, oxidized carbon, carbon nanotubes, biomass-derived carbonaceous matrices-biochars as well as their composites with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived highly-ordered carbons are considered as advanced adsorbents for removal of hazardous organics from drinking water, process water, and leachate. The review is focused on the preparation and modification of these next-generation carbon-based adsorbents and analysis of their adsorption performance including possible adsorption mechanisms. Simultaneously, some weak points of modern carbon-based adsorbents are analyzed as well as the routes to conquer them. For instance, for removal of large quantities of pollutants, the combination of adsorption and other methods, like sedimentation may be recommended. A number of efficient strategies for further enhancing the adsorption performance of the carbon-based adsorbents, in particular, integrating approaches and further rational functionalization, including composing these adsorbents (of two or even three types) can be recommended. The cost reduction and efficient regeneration must also be in the focus of future research endeavors. The targeted optimization of the discussed carbon-based adsorbents associated with detailed studies of the adsorption process, especially, for multicomponent adsorbate solution, will pave a bright avenue for efficient water remediation.

DNA cleavage and chemical transformation of nano-plastics mediated by surface ligand and size

Here, we investigated the photochemistry of nano-plastic particles with different surface ligands and sizes (i.e. PS-NH₂ 40, 80, 100, 200 nm and PS-COOH 40, 80, 100, 200 nm) under a solar simulator. Our findings provide new insights into DNA cleavage and chemical transformation of nano-plastics, especially mediated by different ligands and sizes.

Photoluminescent Nanoparticles for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Imaging

Research related to the development and application of luminescent nanoparticles (LNPs) for chemical and biological analysis and imaging is flourishing. Novel materials and new applications continue to be reported after two decades of research. This review provides a comprehensive and heuristic overview of this field. It is targeted to both newcomers and experts who are interested in a critical assessment of LNP materials, their properties, strengths and weaknesses, and prospective applications. Numerous LNP materials are cataloged by fundamental descriptions of their chemical identities and physical morphology, quantitative photoluminescence (PL) properties, PL mechanisms, and surface chemistry. These materials include various semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene derivatives, carbon dots, nanodiamonds, luminescent metal nanoclusters, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles and downshifting nanoparticles, triplet-triplet annihilation nanoparticles, persistent-luminescence nanoparticles, conjugated polymer nanoparticles and semiconducting polymer dots, multi-nanoparticle assemblies, and doped and labeled nanoparticles, including but not limited to those based on polymers and silica. As an exercise in the critical assessment of LNP properties, these materials are ranked by several application-related functional criteria. Additional sections highlight recent examples of advances in chemical and biological analysis, point-of-care diagnostics, and cellular, tissue, and in vivo imaging and theranostics. These examples are drawn from the recent literature and organized by both LNP material and the particular properties that are leveraged to an advantage. Finally, a perspective on what comes next for the field is offered.

Formation, Stability, and Coagulation of Fullerene Organosols: C70 in Acetonitrile-Toluene Solutions and Related Systems

This paper is aimed at better understanding the nature of C₇₀ aggregates in organic solvents. As liquid media, acetonitrile-toluene mixed solvents were chosen. At a high content of CH₃CN, e.g., 90 vol %, colloidal particles with a size of ca. 225 ± 10 nm are formed with a negative ζ-potential of -(55 ± 5) mV and are stable over time. The interaction with electrolytes containing single-, double-, and triple-charged cations was examined using dynamic light scattering and UV-visible spectra. Additional experiments were carried out with methanol and benzene instead of acetonitrile and toluene, respectively. For comparison, data were obtained with C₆₀ organosols. It was found that coagulation obeys the classical Schulze-Hardy rule. The specificity of the coagulating power of various single-charged cations was explained by their different abilities to adsorb on negatively charged C₇₀ aggregates. The overcharging effect is expressed not only for Ca²⁺ and La³⁺ ions but even for Li⁺ and is caused by poor solvation of such cations in a cationophobic solvent, acetonitrile. After introduction of the cryptand [2.2.2], a substantial increase in the critical concentrations of coagulation for Na⁺, Li⁺, and Ca²⁺ was observed owing to conversion of "bare" metal cations into their cryptates. The application of the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory allowed for evaluation of the Hamaker constant of the C₇₀-C₇₀ interaction in vacuum, A_FF, which lies in the interval of 5.8-16.6 × 10^-20 J. Such an estimate, close to that made previously for C₆₀ organosols, was received after withdrawing electrolytic systems where the hetero- and mutual coagulation were highly likely. However, it is impossible to completely exclude the interfering influence of the latter phenomena. Based on the obtained A_FF values, two approaches to understanding the behavior of fullerenes in water were proposed.

Synthesis of Phosphonated Carbon Nanotubes: New Insight into Carbon Nanotubes Functionalization

Carbon nanotubes were successfully functionalized for the first time in a free radical phosphonylation reaction. Three synthetic protocols were proposed. Carbon nanotubes and diethylphosphite reacted in the presence of known radical initiator, such as azobisisobutyronitrile, single electron oxidant-Mn(OAc)3, or under UV radiation. The functionalized material was fully characterized by means of spectroscopic methods, together with microscopic, surface area and thermogravimetric analyses. UV-illumination was found to be the most effective approach for introducing phosphonates onto carbon nanotubes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed 6% phosphorus in this sample. Moreover, the method was performed at room temperature for only one hour, using diethylphosphite as a reactant and as a solvent. The functionalized carbon nanotubes showed an improved thermal stability, with a decomposition onset temperature increase of more than 130 °C. This makes it very promising material for flame retarding applications.

All carbon hybrid N-doped carbon dots/carbon nanotube structures as an efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

This paper reports the facile and scalable synthesis of hybrid N-doped carbon quantum dots/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CD/CNT) composites, which are efficient alternative catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. The N-doped CDs for large-scale production were obtained within 5 minutes via a one-step polyol process using ethylenediamine (ED) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent. For comparison, different CDs were also prepared using ethylene glycol (EG) and ethanolamine (EA) in the same manner. Physicochemical characterization suggested the successful formation of a CD(ED)/CNT hybrid without individual CD(ED)s and CNTs. The N-doped CD(ED)/CNT catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity in an alkaline solution compared to other composites (CD(EG)/CNT and CD(EA)/CNT). The Tafel slope (−60.9 mV dec⁻¹) and durability (∼9.1% decay over 10 h) for CD(ED)/CNT were superior to high-performance Pt/C catalysts. The electrochemical double-layer capacitance on the CD(ED)/CNT hybrid showed apparent improvement of the active surface area because of N-doping and highly decorated CDs on the CNT wall. These results provide an innovative approach for the potential application of all carbon hybrid structures in electrocatalysis.

The ORR measurements showed that the CD(ED)/CNT catalyst was superior to CD(EG)/CNT and CD(EA)/CNT. They even surpassed the activity of commercial Pt/C in terms of durability, Tafel slope, and MeOH tolerance.

In situ H2O2 generation methods in the context of enzyme biocatalysis

Hydrogen peroxide is a versatile oxidant that has use in medical and biotechnology industries. Many enzymes require this oxidant as a reaction mediator in order to undergo their oxygenation chemistries. While there is a reliable method for generating hydrogen peroxide via an anthraquinone cycle, there are several advantages for generating hydrogen in situ. As highlighted in this review, this is particularly beneficial in the case of biocatalysts that require hydrogen peroxide as a reaction mediator because the exogenous addition of hydrogen peroxide can damage their reactive heme centers and render them inactive. In addition, generation of hydrogen peroxide in situ does not dilute the reaction mixture and cause solution parameters to change. The environment would also benefit from a hydrogen peroxide synthesis cycle that does not rely on nonrenewable chemicals obtained from fossil fuels. Generation of hydrogen peroxide in situ for biocatalysis using enzymes, bioelectrocatalyis, photocatalysis, and cold temperature plasmas are addressed. Particular emphasis is given to reaction processes that support high total turnover numbers (TTNs) of the hydrogen peroxide-requiring enzymes. Discussion of innovations in the use of hydrogen peroxide-producing enzyme cascades for antimicrobial activity, wastewater effluent treatment, and biosensors are also included.
