Insights into the Electron-Transfer Mechanism of Permanganate Activation by Graphite for Enhanced Oxidation of Sulfamethoxazole

pH-modulated oxidation of organic pollutants for water decontamination: A deep insight into reactivity and oxidation pathway

Solution pH is one of the primary factors affecting the efficiency of water decontamination. Although the influence of pH on oxidants activation, catalyst activity, and reactive oxygen species have been widely explored, there is still a scarcity of systemic studies on the changes in the oxidation behavior of organic pollutants at different pH levels. Herein, we report the influence laws of pH on the forms, reactivities, active sites, degradation pathways, and products toxicities of organic pollutants. Changes in pH cause the protonation or deprotonation of organic pollutants and further affect their forms and chemistry (e.g., electrostatic force, hydrophobicity, and oxidation potential). The oxidation potential of organic pollutants follows the order: protonated form > pristine form > deprotonated form. Moreover, protonation or deprotonation can modify the active sites and degradation pathways of organic pollutants, wherein deprotonation renders them more susceptible to electrophilic attack, while protonation reduces their activity against electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks. Additionally, pH adjustments can modify the degradation pathway and the toxicity of transformation products. Overall, pH changes can affect the oxidation fate of organic pollutants by altering their structure, which distinguishes it from the effect of pH on oxidants or oxidant activation processes.

Regulating charge transfer for enhanced PAA activation over sulfur-doped magnetic CoFe2O4: A novel strategy for simultaneous micropollutants degradation and bacteria inactivation

Micropollutants and bacteria are prevalent pollutants in wastewater, posing significant risks to ecosystems and human health. As peracetic acid (PAA) is being increasingly used as a disinfectant, activation of PAA by low-cost and high-performance activators is a promising strategy for wastewater treatment. In this study, the sulfur-doped magnetic CoFe2O4 (SCFO) is successfully developed for efficient PAA activation to simultaneously decontaminate and disinfect wastewater. PAA/SCFO-0.3 exhibits exceptional performance, degrading 100 % of 8 μM sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with a first-pseudo reaction rate of 1.275 min-1, and achieving 5.3-log inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 3 min at a PAA dosage of 0.2 mM and catalyst dosage of 0.025 g/L (initial pH 6.5). Scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identify CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO• as the dominant reactive species for SMX degradation. The sulfur species in SCFO-0.3 facilitate Co2+ regeneration and regulate charge transfer, promoting PAA activation for SMX degradation. Moreover, the PAA/SCFO-0.3 system demonstrates operational feasibility over a broad range of water matrices and has excellent stability and reusability (maintaining 93 % removal of SMX after 5 cycles), demonstrating its potential for industrial applications. This study provides insights into enhancing PAA activation through sulfur doping in transition metal catalysts and highlights the practical applicability of the PAA/SCFO-0.3 system as an advanced alternative to conventional disinfection for simultaneous decontamination and disinfection in wastewater.

Mechanically treated Mn2O3 triggers peracetic acid activation for superior non-radical oxidation of micropollutants: Identification of reactive complexes

This study used a simple mechanical ball milling strategy to significantly improve the ability of Mn2O3 to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for sustainable and efficient degradation of organic micropollutant (like bisphenol A, BPA). BPA was successfully removed and detoxified via PAA activation by the bm-Mn2O3 within 30 min under neutral environment, with the BPA degradation kinetic rate improved by 3.4 times. Satisfactory BPA removal efficiency can still be achieved over a wide pH range, in actual water and after reuse of bm-Mn2O3 for four cycles. The change in hydrophilicity of Mn2O3 after ball milling evidently elevated the affinity of Mn2O3 for binding to PAA, while the reduction in particle size exposed more active sites contributing partially to catalytic oxidation. Further analysis revealed that BPA oxidation in the ball mill-treated Mn2O3 (bm-Mn2O3)/PAA process mainly depends on the bm-Mn2O3-PAA complex (i.e., Mn(III)-OO(O)CCH3) mediated non-radical pathway rather than R-O• and Mn(IV). Especially, the existence of the Mn(III)-PAA complex was definitely verified by in situ Raman spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Simultaneously, density functional theory calculations determined that PAA adsorbs readily on manganese sites thereby favoring the formation of Mn(III)-OO(O)CCH3 complexes. This study advances an in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in the manganese oxide-catalyzed activation of PAA for superior non-radical oxidation of micropollutants.

The Unique Fe3Mo3N Structure Bestowed Efficient Fenton-Like Performance of the Iron-Based Catalysts: The Double Enhancement of Radicals and Nonradicals

Iron-based catalysts are widely used in Fenton-like water pollution control technology due to their high efficiency, but their practical applications are limited by complex preparation conditions and strong blockage of Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle during the reaction. Here, a new iron-molybdenum bimetallic carbon-based catalyst is designed and synthesized using cellulose hydrogel for adsorption of Fe and Mo bimetals as a template, and the effective iron cycle in water treatment is realized. The integrated materials (Fe2.5Mo@CNs) with "catalytic/cocatalytic" performance have higher Fenton-like activation properties and universality than the equivalent quantity iron-carbon-based composite catalysts (Fe@CNs). Through the different characterization methods, experimental verifications and theoretical calculations show that the unique Fe3Mo3N structure promotes the adsorption of persulfate and reduces the energy barrier of the reaction, further completing the double enhancement of radicals (such as SO4·-) and nonradicals (1O2 and electron transport process). The integrated "catalytic/cocatalytic" combined material is expected to provide a new promotion strategy for Fenton-like water pollution control.

Construction of phase-separated Co/MnO synergistic catalysts and integration onto sponge for rapid removal of multiple contaminants

Wastewater treatment recycling is critical to ensure safe water supply or to overcome water shortage. Herein, we developed metallic Co integration onto MnO nanorods (MON) resulting in a phase-separated synergetic catalyst by creating more Mn(III) via the Jahn-Teller effect and oxygen vacancies and improving the redox capability of Co nanoparticles mediated by a thin carbon layer. Additionally, the N-doped surface carbon network on MON contributes to polar sites, facilitating the enrichment of contaminants around reactive sites, thereby shortening the migration of reactive oxidative species (ROS) toward contaminants. The optimized MnO@Co/C-600 exhibits superior PMS activation efficiency for bisphenol A degradation (0.463 min-1), displaying nearly a 20-fold enhancement in the rate constant compared to Mn3O4/C-600. Subsequent experiments involving variable modulation and extension were conducted to further elucidate the multiple synergistic effects. The mechanism study further confirms the synergy of ˙SO4-, ˙OH, ˙O2-, and 1O2, along with additional electron transfer pathways. The intermediates generated during degradation pathways and their toxicity to aquatic organisms were identified. Notably, a monolith integrated catalyst was explored by anchoring MnO@Co/C-600 onto a tailored melamine sponge based on Ca ion triggered crosslink tactic for the photothermal degradation of bisphenol A, tetracycline and norfloxacin, endowed with easy recovery and good stability. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the total organic carbon removal of multiple contaminants surpassed that of sole contaminants.

Origins of Selective Oxidation in Carbon-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes toward Organic Pollutants: Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSARs)

Metal-free carbon material-mediated nonradical oxidation processes (C-NOPs) have emerged as a research hotspot due to their excellent performance in selectively eliminating organic pollutants in aqueous environments. However, the selective oxidation mechanisms of C-NOPs remain obscure due to the diversity of organic pollutants and nonradical active species. Herein, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were employed to unveil the origins of C-NOP selectivity toward organic pollutants in different oxidant systems. QSAR analysis based on adsorption and oxidation descriptors revealed that C-NOP selectivity depends on the oxidation potentials of organic pollutants rather than on adsorption interactions. However, the dominance of electronic effects in selective oxidation decreases with increasing structural complexity of organic pollutants. Moreover, the oxidation threshold solely depends on the inherent electronic nature of organic pollutants and not on the reactivity of nonradical active species. Notably, the accuracy of substituent descriptors (Hammett constants) and theoretical descriptors (e.g., highest occupied molecular orbital energy, ionization potential, and single-electron oxidation potential) is significantly influenced by the complexity and molecular state of organic pollutants. Overall, the study findings reveal the origins of organic pollutant-oriented selective oxidation and provide insight into the application of descriptors in QSAR analysis.

Enhanced permanganate oxidation of phenolic pollutants by alumina and potential industrial application

In this study, we found that alumina (Al2O3) may improve the degradation of phenolic pollutants by KMnO4 oxidation. In KMnO4/Al2O3 system, the removal efficiency of 2,4-Dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) was increased by 26.5%, and the apparent activation energy was decreased from 44.5 kJ/mol to 30.9 kJ/mol. The mechanism of Al2O3-catalytic was elucidated by electrochemical processes, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and theoretical analysis that the oxidation potential of MnO4- was improved from 0.46 V to 0.49 V. The improvement was attributed to the formation of coordination bonds between the O atoms in MnO4- and the empty P orbitals of the Al atoms in Al2O3 crystal leading to the even-more electron deficient state of MnO4-. The excellent reusability of Al2O3, the good performance on degradation of 2,4-DBP in real water, the satisfactory degradation of fixed-bed reactor, and the enhanced removal of 6 other phenolic pollutants demonstrated that the KMnO4/Al2O3 system has satisfactory potential industrial application value. This study offers evidence for the improvement of highly-efficient MnO4- oxidation systems.

New Insights into the Role of Humic Acid in Permanganate Oxidation of Diclofenac: A Novel Electron Transfer Mechanism

Humic acid (HA) ubiquitously existing in aquatic environments has been reported to significantly impact permanganate (KMnO4) decontamination processes. However, the underlying mechanism of the KMnO4/HA system remained elusive. In this study, an enhancing effect of HA on the KMnO4 oxidation of diclofenac (DCF) was observed over a wide solution pH range of 5-9. Surprisingly, the mechanism of HA-induced enhancement varied with solution pH. Quenching and chemical probing experiments revealed that manganese intermediates (Mn(III)-HA and MnO2) were responsible for the enhancement under acidic conditions but not under neutral and alkaline conditions. By combining KMnO4 decomposition, galvanic oxidation process experiments, electrochemical tests, and FTIR and XPS analysis, it was interestingly found that HA could effectively mediate the electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4 in neutral and alkaline solutions, which was reported for the first time. The formation of an organic-catalyst complex (i.e., HA-DCF) with lower reduction potential than the parent DCF was proposed to be responsible for the accelerated electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4. This electron transfer likely occurred within the complex molecule formed through the interaction between HA-DCF and KMnO4 (i.e., HA-DCF-KMnO4). These results will help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the role of HA in the KMnO4 oxidation processes.

Insights into enhanced oxidation of benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs) by ferrate(VI)/ferrihydrite: Increased conversion of Fe(VI) to Fe(V)/Fe(IV)

In this work, the oxidation performance of a new ferrate(VI)/ferrihydrite (Fe(VI)/Fh) system was systematically explored to degrade efficiently six kinds of benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs). Fe(VI)/Fh system not only had a superior degradation capacity towards different BPs, but also exhibited higher reactivity over a pH range of 6.0-9.0. The second-order kinetic model successfully described the process of BP-4 degradation by heterogeneous Fh catalyzed Fe(VI) system (R2 = 0.93), and the presence of Fh could increase the BP-4 degradation rate by Fe(VI) by an order of magnitude (198 M-1·s-1 v.s. 14.2 M-1·s-1). Remarkably, there are higher utilization efficiency and potential of Fe(VI) in Fe(VI)/Fh system than in Fe(VI) alone system. Moreover, characterization and recycling experiments demonstrated that Fh achieved certain long-term running performance, and the residual Fe content of solution after clarifying process meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water. The contributions of reactive species could be ranked as Fe(V)/Fe(IV) > Fe(VI) > •OH. Fe(IV)/Fe(V) were the dominant species for the enhanced removal in the Fe(VI)/Fh system, whose percentage contribution (72 %-36 %) were much higher than those in Fe(VI) alone system (5 %-17 %). However, the contribution of Fe(VI) in oxidizing BP-4 should not be underestimated (20 %-56 %). These findings reasonably exploit available Fh resources to reduce the relatively high cost of Fe(VI), which offers a proper strategies for efficient utilization of high-valent iron species and may be used as a highly-efficient and cost-effective BPs purification method.

Self-acclimation mechanism of pyrite to sulfamethoxazole concentration in terms of degradation behavior and toxicity effects caused by reactive oxygen species

Pyrite has been extensively tested for oxidizing contaminants via the activation of water molecule or dissolved oxygen, while the changing of oxidation species induced by contaminant's concentration has been largely underestimated. In this study, we revealed a self-acclimation mechanism of pyrite in terms of •OH conversion to 1O2 during the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation process under oxic conditions. Two reaction stages of SMX degradation by pyrite were observed. The SMX concentration decreased by 70% rapidly in the first 12 h after the reaction was initiated, then, the removal rate began to decrease as the SMX concentration decreased. Importantly, •OH and O2•- were the dominant oxidizing species in stage one, while 1O2 was responsible for the further degradation of SMX in stage two. The self-acclimated mechanism of pyrite was proven to be caused by the conversion of oxidative species at the surface of pyrite. This process can overcome the shortages of •OH such as ultrashort lifetime and limited effective diffusion in the decontamination of micropollutant. Moreover, different reactive oxygen species will lead to different degradation pathways and environmental toxicity while degrading pollutants. This finding of oxidizing species' self-acclimation mechanism should be of concern when using pyrite for water treatment.

Robust reactive oxygen species production in interfacial reaction between organic acids and biochar: The combined effect of electron acceptance and electron conduction

Interfacial electron transport and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the redox action between biochar (BC) and low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) have been overlooked during the utilization of BC in soil amelioration/remediation. Herein, BC and N-doped BC (NBC) with various physicochemical properties were prepared at pyrolysis temperatures of 350, 550 and 750 °C (namely BC/NBC350, 550 and 750) and their interactions with LMWOAs were systematically investigated. Results of ROS quenching and electrochemical cell experiments revealed that BC/NBC could strongly interact with LMWOAs, especially ascorbic acid (AA), and acted as an electron shuttle to mediate one electron transfer from AA to oxygen to generate O2•-, followed by the robust generation of H2O2 and •OH. Interestingly, the generation rates of •OH and H2O2 in the NBC-AA system were significantly higher than that in the BC-AA system, of which the NBC550-AA system exhibited the best performance, enabling its superior ability in bisphenol A degradation. Different from conventional wisdom, the electron shuttle capacity depended on a combined aromatization degree and electron-accepting capacity of BC/NBC. These findings complement the interfacial electron transfer mechanism during the natural BC-LMWOAs interaction and provide new inspiration for the development of green and efficient organic pollutant removal technologies.

Mineralization versus polymerization pathways in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions

Fenton reaction has been widespread application in water purification due to the excellent oxidation performances. However, the poor cycle efficiency of Fe(III)/Fe(II) is one of the biggest bottlenecks. In this study, graphite (GP) was used as a green carbon catalyst to accelerate Fenton-like (H2O2/Fe3+ and persulfate/Fe3+) reactions by promoting ferric ion reduction and intensifying diverse peroxide activation pathways. Significantly, the carboxyl group on GP anchors iron ions to form GP-COOFe(III) which promote persulfate adsorption to form surface complexes and induce an electron transfer pathway (ETP). While the electron-rich hydroxyl and carbonyl groups will combine to from GP-COFe(II), a reductive intermediate to activate peroxide to generate free radicals (from H2O2 and PDS) or high-value iron [Fe(IV)] (from PMS). Consequently, different pathways lead to distinct degree of oxidation: i) radicals in H2O2/Fe3+/GP prefer to mineralize bisphenol A (BPA) with no selectivity; ii) Fe(IV) in PMS/Fe3+/GP partially oxidizes BPA but cannot open the aromatic ring; iii) ETP in PMS/ or PDS/Fe3+/GP drives coupling reactions to form polymeric products covered on catalyst surface. Thus, rational engineering surface functionality of graphite and selecting proper peroxides can realize on-demand selectivity and oxidation capacity in Fenton-like systems.

Mechanistic investigation of the electricity and gallic acid synergistically accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle for the degradation of carbamazepine

This study investigated the application of a natural plant polyphenol, gallic acid (GA) to form complex with iron to promote the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II) under neutral initial pH conditions in the electrochemical (EC) system for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to efficiently degrade carbamazepine (CBZ). Results demonstrated that the synergistic effects of GA and EC significantly improved the removal efficiency, and the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system effectively removed 100% of CBZ within a wide initial pH range of 3.0-7.0. The optimum stoichiometric ratio of GA to Fe(III) was found as 2:1. Investigations including quenching experiment, chemical probe analysis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to identify the primary reaction radicals as •OH, SO4•-, along with the 1O2 and Fe(IV). In the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system, the synergistic effect of GA and electrochemistry led to a remarkable enhancement in the generation of •OH. Furthermore, the complexation reduction mechanism of GA and Fe(III) was proposed based on experimental and instrumental analyses, which demonstrated that the semi-quinone products of GA were the main substances promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. Mass spectrometry results showed that CBZ generated 27 byproducts during degradation, with formic acid as the main product of GA. The degradation efficiency of the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system remained stable and excellent, exhibiting remarkable performance in the presence of various inorganic anions, including Cl- and NO3-, as well as naturally occurring organic compounds such as fulvic acid (FA). Overall results indicated that the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system can be applied to effectively treat practical wastewater treatment without requirement of pH adjustment.

Enhanced Fenton-like oxidation (Vis/Fe(III)/Peroxydisulfate): The role of iron species and the Fe(III)-LVF complex in levofloxacin degradation

Traditional Fenton and Fenton-like processes are affected by the sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) regeneration and Fe(III) accumulation. This research revealed that the degradation efficiency of pollutants was significantly increased by adding Fe(III) to the Vis/PS system. A mechanism is proposed in which photosensitivity pollutants can boost Fe(III) to produce Fe(II) under visible light irradiation. Intriguingly, Fe(III) rapidly combines with LVF in aqueous environments to form Fe(III)-LVF complexes. This research confirms that Fe(III)-pollutant complexes are generated. The proportion of complexes are calculated using mathematical models. Furthermore, the production of Fe(IV) is verified in the Vis/PS/Fe(III) system, which also plays a vital role in boosting LVF degradation. Overall, this study provides comprehensive insights into the degradation mechanism of micropollutants, involving hydroxyl radical (OH∙), Fe(IV), and Fe(III)-LVF complexes, providing an efficient and green strategy for contaminant removal during wastewater treatment.

Degradation of Nitrobenzene by Mackinawite through a Sequential Two-Step Reduction and Oxidation Process

Mackinawite (FeS) has gained increasing interest due to its potential application in contaminant removal by either reduction or oxidation processes. This study further demonstrated the efficiency of FeS in degrading nitrobenzene (ArNO2) via a sequential two-step reduction and oxidation process under neutral conditions. In the reduction stage, FeS rapidly reduced ArNO2 to aniline (ArNH2), with nitrosobenzene (ArNO) and phenylhydroxylamine (ArNHOH) serving as the intermediates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that both Fe(II) and S(II) in FeS contributed electrons to the reduction of ArNO2. In the subsequent oxidation stage with oxygen, by addition of 0.5 mM tripolyphosphate (TPP), ArNH2 generated in the reduction process could be effectively oxidized to aminophenols by hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which would undergo eventual mineralization via ring-cleavage reactions. TPP exerted a favorable role in enhancing •OH production for ArNH2 degradation by promoting the formation of the dissolved Fe(II)-TPP complex, thus enhancing the homogeneous Fenton reaction. Additionally, TPP adsorption inhibited the surface oxidation reactivity of FeS due to the change of Fe(II) coordination. Finally, the effective degradation of ArNO2 by FeS in actual groundwater was demonstrated by using this sequential reduction and oxidation approach. These research findings provide a theoretical basis for a new FeS-based remediation approach, offering an alternative way for comprehensive removal of ArNO2.

pH-Driven Efficacy of the Ferrate(VI)-Peracetic Acid System in Swift Sulfonamide Antibiotic Degradation: A Deep Dive into Active Species Evolution and Mechanistic Insights

In the realm of wastewater treatment, the power of ferrate (Fe(VI)) and peracetic acid (PAA) as oxidants stands out. But their combined might is where the enhancement truly lies. Their collaborative effect intensifies, but the underlying mechanics, especially across varying pH levels and pollutant types, still lurks in obscurity. Our study delved into the sophisticated oxidation interplay among Fe(VI)-PAA, Fe(VI)-H2O2, and standalone Fe(VI) systems. Notably, at a pH of 9.0, boasting a kinetic constant of ∼0.127 M-1·s-1, the Fe(VI)-PAA system annihilated the pollutant sulfamethoxazole, outpacing its counterparts by a staggering 48.73-fold when compared to the Fe(VI)-H2O2 system and 105.58-fold when using Fe(VI) individually. The behavior of active species─such as the dynamic •OH radicals and high-valent iron species (Fe(IV)/Fe(V))─shifted with pH variations, leading to distinct degradation pathways. Our detailed exploration pinpoints the behaviors of certain species across pH levels from 3.0 to 9.0. In more acidic environments, the •OH species proved indispensable for the system's reactivity. Conversely, as the pH inclined, degradation was increasingly steered by high-valent iron species. This intensive probe demystifies Fe(VI) interactions, deepening our understanding of the capabilities of the Fe(VI)-centered system and guiding us toward cleaner water solutions. Importantly, pH value, often underappreciated, holds the reins in organic wastewater decontamination. Embracing this key player is vital as we strategize for more expansive systems in upcoming ventures.

Carbocatalysts for Enhancing Permanganate Oxidation of Sulfisoxazole

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is extensively applied in water purification due to its stability and ease of handling, but it is a mild oxidant for trace organic contaminants (TrOCs). Hence, there is significant interest in strategies for enhancing reaction kinetics, especially in combination with efficient and economical carbocatalysts. This study compared the performance of four carbocatalysts (graphite, graphene oxide (GO), reduced-GO (rGO), and nitrogen-doped rGO (N-rGO)) in accelerating sulfisoxazole (SSX) oxidation by Mn(VII) and found that GO exhibited the greatest catalytic performance. Besides, the Mn(VII)/GO system shows desirable capacities to remove a broad spectrum of TrOCs. We proposed that the degradation of SSX in Mn(VII)-GO suspensions follows two routes: (i) direct oxidation of SSX by Mn species [both Mn(VII) and in situ formed MnO2(s)] and (ii) a carbocatalyst route, where GO acts as an electron mediator, accepting electrons from SSX and transferring them to Mn(VII). We developed a mathematical model to show the contribution of each parallel pathway and found one-electron transfer is primarily responsible for accelerating SSX removal in the Mn(VII)/GO system. Findings in this study showed that GO provides a simple and effective strategy for enhancing the reactivity of Mn(VII) and provided mechanistic insights into the GO-catalyzed redox reaction between SSX and Mn(VII).

Coupled Surface-Confinement Effect and Pore Engineering in a Single-Fe-Atom Catalyst for Ultrafast Fenton-like Reaction with High-Valent Iron-Oxo Complex Oxidation

The nanoconfinement effect in Fenton-like reactions shows great potential in environmental remediation, but the construction of confinement structure and the corresponding mechanism are rarely elucidated systematically. Herein, we proposed a novel peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system employing the single Fe atom supported on mesoporous N-doped carbon (FeSA-MNC, specific surface area = 1520.9 m2/g), which could accelerate the catalytic oxidation process via the surface-confinement effect. The degradation activity of the confined system was remarkably increased by 34.6 times compared to its analogue unconfined system. The generation of almost 100% high-valent iron-oxo species was identified via 18O isotope-labeled experiments, quenching tests, and probe methods. The density functional theory illustrated that the surface-confinement effect narrows the gap between the d-band center and Fermi level of the single Fe atom, which strengthens the charge transfer rate at the reaction interface and reduces the free energy barrier for PMS activation. The surface-confinement system exhibited excellent pollutant degradation efficiency, robust resistance to coexisting matter, and adaptation of a wide pH range (3.0-11.0) and various temperature environments (5-40 °C). Finally, the FeSA-MNC/PMS system could achieve 100% sulfamethoxazole removal without significant performance decline after 10,000-bed volumes. This work provides novel and significant insights into the surface-confinement effect in Fenton-like chemistry and guides the design of superior oxidation systems for environmental remediation.

Insights into the electron transfer regime of permanganate activation on carbon nanomaterial reduced from carbon dioxide

Simultaneously eliminating novel contaminants in the water environment while also achieving high-value utilization of CO2 poses a significant challenge in water purification. Herein, a CO2-reduced carbon catalyst (CRC) was synthesized via the chemical vapor deposition method for permanganate (PM) activation, fulfilling the ultra-efficient removal of bisphenol A (BPA). The primary mechanism responsible for the BPA degradation in the CRC/PM process is electron transfer. Hydroxyl groups and defect structures on CRC act as electron mediators, facilitating the transfer of electrons from contaminants to PM. On the basis of the quantitative structure-activity relationship, the elimination performance of the CRC/PM process exhibited variability in accordance with the inherent characteristics of pollutants. In addition, the yield of manganese intermediates was also observed in the CRC/PM process, which only serve as redox intermediates rather than active species attacking organics. Ascribed to nonradical mechanisms, the CRC/PM system exhibited remarkable stability and demonstrated significant resistance to the presence of background substances. Moreover, BPA degradation pathways were clarified via mass spectrometry analysis and density functional theory calculations, with intermediate products exhibiting lower toxicity. This study provided new insights into the employment of carbon catalysts derived from CO2 for PM nonradical activation to degrade contaminants in various water matrices.

Recent advancements and challenges in emerging applications of biochar-based catalysts

The sustainable utilization of biochar produced from biomass waste could substantially promote the development of carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Due to their cost-effectiveness, multiple functionalities, tailorable porous structure, and thermal stability, biochar-based catalysts play a vital role in sustainable biorefineries and environmental protection, contributing to a positive, planet-level impact. This review provides an overview of emerging synthesis routes for multifunctional biochar-based catalysts. It discusses recent advances in biorefinery and pollutant degradation in air, soil, and water, providing deeper and more comprehensive information of the catalysts, such as physicochemical properties and surface chemistry. The catalytic performance and deactivation mechanisms under different catalytic systems were critically reviewed, providing new insights into developing efficient and practical biochar-based catalysts for large-scale use in various applications. Machine learning (ML)-based predictions and inverse design have addressed the innovation of biochar-based catalysts with high-performance applications, as ML efficiently predicts the properties and performance of biochar, interprets the underlying mechanisms and complicated relationships, and guides biochar synthesis. Finally, environmental benefit and economic feasibility assessments are proposed for science-based guidelines for industries and policymakers. With concerted effort, upgrading biomass waste into high-performance catalysts for biorefinery and environmental protection could reduce environmental pollution, increase energy safety, and achieve sustainable biomass management, all of which are beneficial for attaining several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

PTIO as a redox mediator to enhance organic contaminants oxidation by permanganate

Although permanganate (Mn(VII)) is extensively utilized as a strong oxidizer for the purification of water, the direct reaction rates between some refractory pollutants and Mn(VII) are moderate or relatively low. In this study, we found that 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl (PTIO), could act as a redox mediator to enhance bisphenol A (BPA) degradation by Mn(VII) at pH 5.0 - 9.0, with a removal higher than 80% over 5 min. Moreover, the Mn(VII)/PTIO system is highly efficient toward a broad spectrum of contaminants. Mechanism was elucidated as following: PTIO was oxidized by Mn(VII) to PTIO+, an oxoammonium cation. As a newly generated reactive species, PTIO+ could oxidize organics and be reduced to PTIOH (PTIO hydroxylamine) or PTIO simultaneously. The redox cycle of PTIO in consecutive runs as an electron shuttle proved its stability and reusability in Mn(VII) oxidation. In addition to being an electron shuttle, PTIO also acts as an activator of Mn(VII) to promote the production of MnO2, which plays a vital role in enhancing BPA abatement at the acidic condition. For the purpose of further understanding the interaction between PTIO and target contaminants, three corresponding degradation pathways for BPA were proposed. Notably, the transformation products of BPA coupling with PTIO were detected, indicating PTIO inhibited the self-coupling of BPA and facilitated the ring-opening pathway. In addition, the ubiquitous humic acid has a positive effect on the Mn(VII)/PTIO system, suggesting a high promise of this system for practical application.

Insights into the carbon nanotubes-mediated activation of permanganate for decontamination under high salinity

Radical-based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) has attracted great interests in wastewater treatment field. However, by the traditional radical-based method, the degradation of organic pollution is greatly suppressed when radicals react with the co-existing anions in the solution. Herein, an efficient method for degrading of contaminant under high salinity conditions is discussed through a non-radical pathway. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was employed as an electron transfer medium to facilitate the electron conversion from contaminants to potassium permanganate (PM). Based the results of quenching experiments, probe experiments, and galvanic oxidation process experiments, the degradation mechanism of CNTs/PM process was demonstrated to be electron transfer, rather than reactive intermediate Mn species. As a result, typical influencing factors including salt concentration, cations, and humic acid have less of an impact on degradation during CNTs/PM processes. In addition, the CNTs/PM system exhibits superior reusability and universality of pollutants, which has the potential to be applied as a non-radical pathway for the purification of contaminant in the large-scale high salinity wastewater treatment.

Peroxymonocarbonate activation via Co nanoparticles confined in metal-organic frameworks for efficient antibiotic degradation in different actual water matrices

Traditional advanced oxidation processes suffer from low availability of ultrashort lifetime radicals and declining stability of catalysts. Co nanoparticles in hollow bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Co@MOFs) were synthesized via a solvothermal method. Nanoconfinement and peroxymonocarbonate (PMC) degradation system endows Co@MOFs with high catalytic activity and stability even in the actual water matrices. The nanocomposites exhibited 100-200 nm polyhedron structure with irregular nanocavity between the 20 nm shell and multicores. Co nanoparticles were completely encapsulated by the FeIII-MOF-5 shell according to the X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectra. Both 0.8 nm micropores and 3.6 nm mesopores were proven to be present. The yolk-shell Co@MOFs exhibited higher catalytic performance than that of Co nanoparticles, hollow FeIII-MOF-5 and its core-shell counterpart toward PMC activation during sulfamethoxazole degradation. The catalytic activities of Co@MOFs for the activation of unsymmetrical peroxides (PMC and peroxymonosulfate) were much higher than those for the symmetrical peroxides (H2O2 and persulfate) and the heterogeneous catalysis was dominant in the Co@MOFs activated H2O2 and PMC systems. The MOF stability was the highest and metal leakages were the least in the activated PMC system among the four peroxides because of mild reaction conditions and the alkalescent solution (pH = 8.3-8.4). Furthermore, the high removal efficiencies (>94%) and degradation rates could be maintained in the different actual water matrices due to the confinement effects. The contributions of carbonate and hydroxyl radicals were primary for sulfamethoxazole degradation, and superoxide anion and singlet oxygen also played essential roles according to scavenging experiments and time-series spin-trapping electron spin resonance spectra. Six degradation pathways were proposed according to 26 intermediate identification and the pharmacophores of more than 80% intermediates were destroyed, which would benefit subsequent biological treatment. Successful combination of nanoconfinement and PMC might provide a new effective solution for pollution remediation.

In Situ Regulation of MnO2 Structural Characteristics by Oxyanions to Boost Permanganate Autocatalysis for Phenol Removal

Oxyanions, a class of constituents naturally occurring in water, have been widely demonstrated to enhance permanganate (Mn(VII)) decontamination efficiency. However, the detailed mechanism remains ambiguous, mainly because the role of oxyanions in regulating the structural parameters of colloidal MnO2 to control the autocatalytic activity of Mn(VII) has received little attention. Herein, the origin of oxyanion-induced enhancement is systematically studied using theoretical calculations, electrochemical tests, and structure-activity relation analysis. Using bicarbonate (HCO3-) as an example, the results indicate that HCO3- can accelerate the degradation of phenol by Mn(VII) by improving its autocatalytic process. Specifically, HCO3- plays a significant role in regulating the structure of in situ produced MnO2 colloids, i.e., increasing the surface Mn(III)s content and restricting particle growth. These structural changes in MnO2 facilitate its strong binding to Mn(VII), thereby triggering interfacial electron transfer. The resultant surface-activated Mn(VII)* complexes demonstrate excellent degrading activity via directly seizing one electron from phenol. Further, other oxyanions with appropriate ionic potentials (i.e., borate, acetate, metasilicate, molybdate, and phosphate) exhibit favorable influences on the oxidative capability of Mn(VII) through an activation mechanism similar to that of HCO3-. These findings considerably improve our fundamental understanding of the oxidation behavior of Mn(VII) in actual water environments and provide a theoretical foundation for designing autocatalytically boosted Mn(VII) oxidation systems.

Utilization of Fe-Ethylenediamine-N,N'-Disuccinic Acid Complex for Electrochemical Co-Catalytic Activation of Peroxymonosulfate under Neutral Initial pH Conditions

The ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) was utilized to form Fe-EDDS complex to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the electrochemical (EC) co-catalytic system for effective oxidation of naphthenic acids (NAs) under neutral pH conditions. 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid (ACA) was used as a model compound to represent NAs, which are persistent pollutants that are abundantly present in oil and gas field wastewater. The ACA degradation rate was significantly enhanced in the EC/PMS/Fe(III)-EDDS system (96.6%) compared to that of the EC/PMS/Fe(III) system (65.4%). The addition of EDDS led to the formation of a stable complex of Fe-EDDS under neutral pH conditions, which effectively promoted the redox cycle of Fe(III)-EDDS/Fe(II)-EDDS to activate PMS to generate oxidative species for ACA degradation. The results of quenching and chemical probe experiments, as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, identified significant contributions of •OH, 1O2, and SO4•- in the removal of ACA. The ACA degradation pathways were revealed based on the results of high resolution mass spectrometry analysis and calculation of the Fukui index. The presence of anions, such as NO3-, Cl-, and HCO3-, as well as humic acids, induced nonsignificant influence on the ACA degradation, indicating the robustness of the current system for applications in authentic scenarios. Overall results indicated the EC/PMS/Fe(III)-EDDS system is a promising strategy for the practical treatment of NAs in oil and gas field wastewater.

Rapid self-heating synthesis of Fe-based nanomaterial catalyst for advanced oxidation

Iron-based catalysts are promising candidates for advanced oxidation process-based wastewater remediation. However, the preparation of these materials often involves complex and energy intensive syntheses. Further, due to the inherent limitations of the preparation conditions, it is challenging to realise the full potential of the catalyst. Herein, we develop an iron-based nanomaterial catalyst via soft carbon assisted flash joule heating (FJH). FJH involves rapid temperature increase, electric shock, and cooling, the process simultaneously transforms a low-grade iron mineral (FeS) and soft carbon into an electron rich nano Fe0/FeS heterostructure embedded in thin-bedded graphene. The process is energy efficient and consumes 34 times less energy than conventional pyrolysis. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the electron delocalization of the FJH-derived heterostructure improves its binding ability with peroxydisulfate via bidentate binuclear model, thereby enhancing ·OH yield for organics mineralization. The Fe-based nanomaterial catalyst exhibits strong catalytic performance over a wide pH range. Similar catalysts can be prepared using other commonly available iron precursors. Finally, we also present a strategy for continuous and automated production of the iron-based nanomaterial catalysts.

Insight into the electron transfer regime of periodate activation on MnO2: The critical role of surface Mn(IV)

At present, the potential mechanism of manganese oxide (MnO₂) activation of PI and the key active sites of PI activation are still unclear and controversial. To this end, three different crystal forms of MnO₂ were prepared in this study and used to activate PI to degrade pollutants. The results showed that different crystal types of MnO₂ showed different catalytic abilities, and the order was γ-MnO₂ > α-MnO₂ > β-MnO₂. Through quenching experiments, EPR tests, Raman experiments and in situ electrochemical experiments, it has been confirmed that electron transfer-mediated non-free radical process is the main mechanism of pollutant degradation, in which the active substance is the highly active metastable intermediate complex (MnO₂/PI*). Hydroxyl radical (HO^•), superoxide radical (O₂^•-), singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and iodine radical (IO₃^•) did not participate in pollutant degradation. The quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis confirmed that the catalytic performance of MnO₂ was highly positively correlated with the surface Mn(IV) content, which indicated that the surface Mn(IV) site was the main active site. Overall, this study will be of great help to the design and application of manganese dioxide activation for periodate degradation of pollutants.

Pulsed versus direct current electrochemical co-catalytic peroxymonosulfate-based system: Elevated degradation and energy efficiency with enhanced oxidation mechanisms

In this work, the pulsed electrochemical (PE) system was investigated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with the addition of Fe(III) to achieve efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with reduced energy consumption, in comparison with the direct current (DC) electrochemical system. The operational conditions of PE/PMS/Fe(III) system were optimized as 4 kHz pulse frequency, 50% duty cycle, and pH 3, at which 67.6% reduction of energy consumption and enhanced degradation performance were achieved compared to the DC/PMS/Fe(III) system. Results of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis and quenching and chemical probe experiment revealed the presence of ^•OH, SO₄^•-, and ¹O₂ in the system, with ^•OH being the dominant role. The concentrations of these active species were averagely 15 ± 1% higher in the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system than those of the DC/PMS/Fe(III) system. Identification of SMX byproducts was achieved based on high resolution mass spectrometry analysis to predict the degradation pathways. The SMX byproducts could eventually be eliminated by the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system with extended treatment time. Overall, the PE/PMS/Fe(III) system was demonstrated with high energy and degradation performance, and is appear to be an robust strategy for practical treatment of wastewater.

Insights into oxidation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by low-dose ferrate(VI) catalyzed with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles

In this study, the catalytic performance of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (nα-Fe₂O₃) in the low-dose ferrate (Fe(VI)) system was systematically studied through the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Based on the established quadratic functions between nα-Fe₂O₃ amount and observed pseudo first-order rate constant (k_obs), two linear correlation equations were offered to predict the optimum catalyst dosage and the maximum k_obs at an applied Fe(VI) amount. Moreover, characterization and cycling experiments showed that nα-Fe₂O₃ has good stability and recyclability. According to the results of reactive species identification and quenching experiment and galvanic oxidation process, the catalytic mechanism was proposed that Fe(III) on the surface of nα-Fe₂O₃ may react with Fe(VI) to enhance the generation of highly reactive Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species, which rapidly extracted a single electron from PCP molecule for its further reaction. Besides, two possible PCP degradation pathways, i.e., single oxygen transfer mediated hydroxylation and single electron transfer initiated polymerization were proposed. The formation of coupling products that are prone to precipition and separation was largely improved. This study proved that nα-Fe₂O₃ can effectively catalyze PCP removal at low-dose Fe(VI), which provides some support for the application of Fe(VI) oxidation technology in water treatment in the context of low-carbon emissions.

Efficient activation of ferrate by Ru(III): Insights into the major reactive species and the multiple roles of Ru(III)

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) has aroused great research interest in recent years due to its environmental benignancy and lower potential in disinfection by-product generation. However, the inevitable self-decomposition and lower reactivity under alkaline conditions severely restrict the utilization and decontamination efficiency of Fe(VI). Here, we discovered that Ru(III), a representative transition metal, could effectively activate Fe(VI) to degrade organic micropollutants, and its performance on Fe(VI) activation exceeded that of previously reported metal activators. The high-valent metal species (i.e., Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and high-valent Ru species) made a major contribution to SMX removal by Fe(VI)-Ru(III). Density functional theory calculations indicated the function of Ru(III) as a two-electron reductant, leading to the production of Ru(V) and Fe(IV) as the predominant active species. The characterization analyses proved that Ru species was deposited on ferric (hydr)oxides as Ru(III), indicating the possibility of Ru(III) as an electron shuttle with the rapid valence circulation between Ru(V) and Ru(III). This study not only develops an efficient way to activate Fe(VI) but also offers a thorough understanding of Fe(VI) activation induced by transition metals.

Degradation of sulfamethoxazole by super-hydrophilic MoS2 sponge co-catalytic Fenton: Enhancing Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle and mass transfer

To promote the cycle of Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ in co-catalytic Fenton and enhance mass transfer in an external circulation sequencing batch packed bed reactor (ECSPBR), super-hydrophilicity MoS₂ sponge (TMS) modified by tungstosilicic acid (TA) was prepared for efficiently degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotics in aqueous solution. The influence of hydrophilicity of co-catalyst on co-catalytic Fenton and the advantages of ECSPBR were systematically studied through comparative research methods. The results showed that the super hydrophilicity increased the contact between Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ with TMS, then accelerated Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ cycle. The max Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ ratio of TMS co-catalytic Fenton (TMS/Fe²⁺/H₂O₂) was 1.7 times that of hydrophobic MoS₂ sponge (CMS) co-catalytic Fenton. SMX degradation efficiency could reach over 90% under suitable conditions. The structure of TMS remained unchanged during the process, and the max dissolved concentration of Mo was lower than 0.06 mg/L. Additionally, the catalytic activity of TMS could be restored by a simple re-impregnation. The external circulation of the reactor was conducive to improving the mass transfer and the utilization rate of Fe²⁺ and H₂O₂ during the process. This study offered new insights to prepare a recyclable and hydrophilic co-catalyst and develop an efficient co-catalytic Fenton reactor for organic wastewater treatment.

Activation of periodate by N-doped iron-based porous carbon for degradation of sulfisoxazole: Significance of catalyst-mediated electron transfer mechanism

Periodate (PI) has recently been studied as an excellent oxidant in advanced oxidation processes, and its reported mechanism is mainly the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work presents an efficient approach using N-doped iron-based porous carbon (Fe@N-C) to activate periodate for the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SIZ). Characterization results indicated the catalyst has high catalytic activity, stable structure, and high electron transfer activity. In terms of degradation mechanism, it is pointed out that the non-radical pathway is the dominant mechanism. In order to prove this mechanism, we have carried out scavenging experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, salt bridge experiments and electrochemical experiments, which demonstrate the occurrence of mediated electron transfer mechanism. Fe@N-C could mediate the electron transfer from organic contaminant molecules to PI, thus improving the efficiency of PI utilization, rather than simply inducing the activation of PI through Fe@N-C. The overall results of this study provided a new understanding into the application of Fe@N-C activated PI in wastewater treatment.

Synergistic activation of persulfate by FeS@SBA-15 for imidacloprid degradation: Efficiencies, activation mechanism and degradation pathways

In this work, FeS supported SBA-15 mesoporous silica catalyst (FeS@SBA-15) was synthesized successfully, characterized and first applied to persulfate (PS) activation for the degradation of imidacloprid in wastewater. The as-prepared 3.5-FeS@SBA-15 presented an impressive imidacloprid removal efficiency of 93.1% and reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) of 1.82% after 5 min, ascribed to the synergetic effects of improved FeS dispersion and abundant surface sites by SBA-15. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and quenching experiments proved that both SO4·- and ·OH were produced in FeS@SBA-15/PS system, and SO4·- played a dominant role in the degradation process. The S2- can accelerate the cycling of Fe(III)/Fe(II) during activation and increase the steady-state concentration of Fe(II). More importantly, the constructed heterogeneous system exhibited an efficient and stable catalytic activity over a wide range of pH (3.0-9.0), temperature (283K-313K), inorganic ion (NO3-) and humic acid (1-20 mg/L). Moreover, the density functional theory calculations were conducted to predict the potential reaction sites of imidacloprid. Based on eighteen identified intermediates, four main degradation pathways were proposed: hydroxylation, dechlorination, hydrolysis, and the ring cleavage of the imidazolidine. ECOSAR analysis indicated hydroxylation and dechlorination played a key role in the detoxification of the formed compounds. These findings would provide new insights into the application of FeS@SBA-15 catalyst in wastewater treatment and the removal mechanism of imidacloprid from wastewater.

Permanganate activation with Mn oxides at different oxidation states: Insight into the surface-promoted electron transfer mechanism

The development of new strategies to improve the removal of organic pollutants with permanganate (KMnO₄) is a hot topic in water treatment. While Mn oxides have been extensively used in Advanced Oxidation Processes through an electron transfer mechanism, the field of KMnO₄ activation remains relatively unexplored. Interestingly, this study has discovered that Mn oxides with high oxidation states including γ-MnOOH, α-Mn₂O₃ and α-MnO₂, exhibited excellent performance to degrade phenols and antibiotics in the presence of KMnO₄. The MnO₄^- species initially formed stable complexes with the surface Mn(III/IV) species and showed an increased oxidation potential and electron transfer reactivity, caused by the electron-withdrawing capacity of the Mn species acting as Lewis acids. Conversely, for MnO and γ-Mn₃O₄ with Mn(II) species, they reacted with KMnO₄ to produce cMnO₂ with very low activity for phenol degradation. The direct electron transfer mechanism in α-MnO₂/KMnO₄ system was further confirmed through the inhibiting effect of acetonitrile and the galvanic oxidation process. Moreover, the adaptability and reusability of α-MnO₂ in complicated waters indicated its potential for application in water treatment. Overall, the findings shed light on the development of Mn-based catalysts for organic pollutants degradation via KMnO₄ activation and understanding of the surface-promoted mechanism.

Efficient removal of recalcitrant naphthenic acids with electro-cocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid complex under neutral initial pH condition

This work investigated the activation of peroxymonosulfate by electrochemical (EC) system assisted with Fe(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) complex for degradation of persistent naphthenic acids (NAs) under neutral initial pH conditions. As NAs are a complicated mixture, 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid (ACA) was selected as the model NA compound for degradation experiment. The addition of NTA is to chelate with Fe(III), gaining stability under neutral pH condition to facilitate the circulation of Fe(II)/Fe(III) by the electrochemical process to activate PMS. The EC/Fe(III)-NTA/PMS system was explored with applicable pH range of 3-9 and an optimized molar ratio 1: 2 for Fe: NTA. Results of quenching and chemical probe experiment together with results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed the main reactive species of the system, including ^•OH, SO₄^•-, ¹O₂ and possibly Fe(IV). With the addition of NTA, the yields of ^•OH, SO₄^•-, ¹O₂ were enhanced. Results of mass spectrometry analysis and DFT calculations indicated the formation of 9 degradation byproducts of ACA via three primary degradation pathways such as hydroxyl substitution, carbonyl substitution, and decarboxylation. Furthermore, the EC/Fe(III)-NTA/PMS system could achieve excellent removal efficiency of ACA with different anions such as Cl^-, HCO₃^-, NO₃^- and H₂PO₄^- in the background. The practical applicability of the system was also verified with the high removal of commercial NAs mixture standard. Overall results have indicated the EC/Fe(III)-NTA/PMS system could be utilized for efficient reclamation of authentic oil and gas industrial wastewater under natural pH conditions.

Identifying the evolution of primary oxidation mechanisms and pollutant degradation routes in the electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems

Herein, electro-catalysis (EC) as the electron donor to accelerate the continuable Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles in different inorganic peroxides (i.e., peroxymonosulfate (PMS), peroxydisulfate (PDS) and hydrogen peroxide (HP)) activation systems were established. These electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems exhibited an excellent degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). A series of analytical and characterization methods including quenching experiments, probe experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) were implemented to systematically sort out the source and yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS). A wide kind of ROS including hydroxyl radical (^•OH), singlet oxygen (¹O₂), and sulfate radical (SO₄^•-), which contributed 38%, 37%, and 24% were produced in EC/Fe(III)/PMS system, respectively. ^•OH was the dominant ROS in both EC/Fe(III)/PDS and EC/Fe(III)/HP processes. According to the analysis of SMX degradation routes and biotoxicity, abundant degradation pathways were identified in EC/Fe(III)/PMS process and lower environmental impact was achieved in EC/Fe(III)/HP process. The diversiform ROS of EC/Fe(III)/PMS system makes it exhibit greater environmental adaptability in complex water matrixes and excellent low-energy consumption performance in many organic pollutants degradation. Continuous flow treatment experiments proved that the three systems have great sustainability and practical application prospect. This work provides a strong basis for constructing suitable systems to achieve different treatment requirements.

Orientated construction of visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation system for antibiotic removal: Significant enhancing effect of Cl. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2023;445:130476. [PMID: 36455327 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2022.130476]

Antibiotic contaminants can migrate over long distances in the water, thus possibly causing severe detriment to the environment and even potential harm to human health. Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) assisted by visible light is an emerging and promising technology for the purification of such wastewater. This study designed an ultra-efficient and stable PMS activator (FeCN) to restore the typical antibiotic-polluted water under harsh conditions. About 90.94% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was degraded in 35 min in the constructed FeCN+PMS/vis system, and the reaction rate constant was nearly 50-fold higher than direct photocatalysis. Electron spin resonance, quenching experiments, LC/MS technique, eco-toxicity assessment, and density functional theory validated that the SMX removal was dominated by the attack of h⁺, ^•O₂^- and ¹O₂ on the active atoms of SMX molecules with high Fukui index, presenting as a simultaneous degradation and detoxification process. Such a visible-light-assisted PMS activation system also had good resistance to the environmental water bodies and a broad spectrum in the degradation of various pollutants. In particular, Cl^- (50 mM) could significantly accelerate the removal of SMX with a 32.6-fold increase in catalytic activity, and the mineralization efficiency could reach 56.6% under identical conditions. Moreover, this Cl^- containing system excluded the degradation products of disinfection by-products, and such a system was also versatile for different contaminants. This work demonstrates the feasibility of the FeCN+PMS/vis system for the remediation of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater in the presence and absence of Cl^-, and also highlights their great potential in WWTPs.

Carbonyl and defect of metal-free char trigger electron transfer and O2- in persulfate activation for Aniline aerofloat degradation

Residual flotation reagents in mineral processing wastewater can trigger severe ecological threats to the local groundwater if they are discharged without treatment. Metal-free biochar-induced persulfate-advanced oxidation processes (KCBC/PS) were used in this study to elucidate the degradation of aniline aerofloat (AAF) - a typical flotation reagent. In KCBC/PS system, AAF can be removed at low doses of catalyst (KCBC, 0.05 g/L) and oxidant (PS, 0.3 mM) additions with high efficiency. The analysis revealed the dominance of O₂^•- among the identified reactive oxygen species (ROS), which achieved deeper mineralization for the AAF degradation in the KCBC/PS system. The role of the electron transfer mechanism was equally important; the importance was corroborated by the chemical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) detection, probe experiments, and electrochemical analysis. It benefited from the electron transfer mechanism in the KCBC/PS system and exhibited a wide pH adaptation (3.5-11) and high resistance to inorganic anions for real mining wastewater treatment. Combined with theoretical calculations and other analyses, the carbonyl group was deemed to be the active site of the non-radical pathway of biochar, while the site of the conversion of SO₄^•- to superoxide radicals by biochar activation represented a defect. These findings revealed a synergistic effect of multiple active sites on PS activation in biochar-based materials. Moreover, the intermediate degradation products of AAF from mass spectrometry indicated a possible pathway through the density functional theory (DFT) method, which was effective in reducing the environmental toxicity of pollutants for the first time according to the T.E.S.T software and seed germination experiments. Overall, our study proposed a novel modification strategy for cost-effective and environmentally friendly biochar-based catalysts, while also deepening our understanding of the mechanism of activation of persulfate by metal-free carbon-based materials.

Selective Oxygen Activation to Reactive Oxygen Species on a Carbon Layer-Encapsulated CuxO Electrocatalyst for Water Purification

In situ synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on demand via oxygen activation (OA) is significant in biological, chemical, and environmental fields. Thus, the design of OA catalysts with adequate reactivity, durability, and selectivity is critical but challenging. Here, we report a Cu_xO@C core@shell photoelectrode prepared by encapsulating Cu/Cu₂O/CuO into a carbon layer through anodic electropolymerization (electrophoresis-coupled self-assembly of carbon quantum dots). Theoretical prediction and experiments indicate that the carbon layer can effectively facilitate optical trapping and charge transfer, thus promoting photoelectric conversion and anti-photocorrosion performance of Cu_xO@C. The inner Cu_xO core acts as an electron reservoir and continuously injects electrons into the outer carbon layer shell, and the carbon atoms adjacent to oxygen-enriched functional groups (C-O-C and -COOH) in the electron-rich carbon layer work as the reactive sites to adsorb O₂ and donate electrons to the antibonding orbital [lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (π*)] of dioxygen. Optimized adsorption and hydrogenation of the critical intermediates (*O₂, *OOH, and *H₂O₂) and thermodynamically tunable O-O bond cleavage enable O₂ being selectively reduced to the superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical via the mixed multielectron processes consisting of one- and three-electron pathways. Sulfamethoxazole, an emerging refractory organic contaminant widely present in the environment, can be effectively degraded (∼100% removal) in such an electrochemical platform, benefiting from the abundant ROS generated in situ. Our findings demonstrate an innovative strategy to develop highly efficient and selective OA catalysts for practical water purification.

Roles of MnO2 Colloids and Mn(III) during the Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Permanganate

Although intermediate manganese species can be generated during the reactions of permanganate (Mn(VII)) with organic pollutants in water, the role of the in situ generated MnO₂ colloids in the Mn(VII) oxidation process remained controversial and the contribution of Mn(III) was largely neglected. This study showed that the apparent second-order rate constants (k_app) of Mn(VII) oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfoxide and carbamazepine remained constant with time. However, the degradation of four selected phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII) exhibited an autoaccelerating trend and a linear trend at pH 3.0-6.0 and pH 7.0-9.0, respectively. Multiple lines of evidence revealed that the occurrence of the autoaccelerating trend in the Mn(VII) oxidation process was ascribed to the oxidation of the phenolic organics by MnO₂ colloids. The influence of pyrophosphate on the oxidation of different organic contaminants by MnO₂ colloids suggests that Mn(III) was also responsible for the autoaccelerating oxidation of organic contaminants by Mn(VII) under specific reaction conditions. The kinetic models revealed that the overall contributions of MnO₂ colloids and Mn(III) ranged within 6.6-67.9% during the autoaccelerating oxidation of phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII). These findings advance the understanding of the roles of MnO₂ colloids and Mn(III) in the Mn(VII) oxidation process.

Facet-Dependent Activation of Oxalic Acid over Magnetic Recyclable Fe3S4 for Efficient Pollutant Removal under Visible Light Irradiation: Enhanced Catalytic Activity, DFT Calculations, and Mechanism Insight

Photo-Fenton-like reaction based on oxalic acid (OA) activation is a promising method for the fast degradation of pollutants due to the low cost and safety. Hence, the magnetic recyclable greigite (Fe₃S₄) with the exposed {011} facet (FS-011) was prepared using a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and activated OA under visible light irradiation for pollutant removal, in which the removal efficiency values of FS-011 for metronidazole (MNZ) and hexavalent chromium were 2.02 and 1.88 times higher than that of Fe₃S₄ with the exposed {112} facet, respectively. Density functional theory calculations revealed that OA was more easily adsorbed by the {011} facet of Fe₃S₄ than by the {112} facet, and the in situ-generated H₂O₂ preferred to diffuse away from the active sites of the {011} facet of Fe₃S₄ than from that of the {112} facet, which was conducive to the continuous adsorption and efficient activation of OA. Moreover, the analyses of Fukui index and dual descriptor confirmed the degradation mechanism that the imidazole ring of MNZ was easy to be attacked by electrophilic species, while the amino group of MNZ was easy to be attacked by nucleophilic species. These findings deeply analyzed the mechanism of enhanced OA activation by facet engineering and consolidated the theoretical basis for practical application of Fenton-like reactions.

Enhanced oxidation of organic contaminants by Mn(VII) in water

Studies that promote chemical oxidation by permanganate (MnO₄^-; Mn(VII)) as a viable technology for water treatment and environmental purification have been quickly accumulating over the past decades. Various methods to activate Mn(VII) have been proposed and their efficacy in destructing a wide range of emerging organic contaminants has been demonstrated. This article aims to present a state-of-art review on the development of Mn(VII) activation methods, including photoactivation, electrical activation, the addition of redox mediators, carbonaceous materials, and other chemical agents, with a particular focus on the potential activation mechanism and critical influencing factors. Different reaction mechanisms are involved in activated Mn(VII) oxidation processes, including the generation of reactive intermediates derived from Mn(VII) (e.g., Mn(III), Mn(V), and Mn(VI)) or activators (e.g., intermediates of redox mediators and Ru catalysts), reactive oxygen species (ROS) (e.g., •OH, O₂^•-, and ¹O₂), as well as electron transfer from organics to Mn(VII) via catalysts as the electron mediator. Except •OH that is generated as one of co-oxidants in UV/Mn(VII) process, other reactive species are relatively mild oxidants, which are more selective toward organic substrates and highly tolerant toward various water matrices (e.g., inorganic ions and natural organic matter) compared to strongly oxidizing radical species. Therefore, activated Mn(VII) oxidation processes show a good prospect for efficient removal of target contaminants in natural and complex environmental matrices. However, there are some disputes about the dominant reactive species generated in these processes, and their identification methods may be not appropriate, causing serious confusion in the mechanistic understanding. So, further efforts are still needed to fill the knowledge gap and also to address the application challenges of these technologies.

Coupling surfactants with ISCO for remediating of NAPLs: Recent progress and application challenges

Non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) pose a serious risk to the soil-groundwater environment. Coupling surfactants with in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technology is a promising strategy, which is attributed to the enhanced desorption and solubilization efficiency of NAPL contaminants. However, the complex interactions among surfactants, oxidation systems, and NAPL contaminants have not been fully revealed. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the development of surfactant-coupled ISCO technology focusing on the effects of surfactants on oxidation systems and NAPLs degradation behavior. Specifically, we discussed the compatibility between surfactants and oxidation systems, including the non-productive consumption of oxidants by surfactants, the role of surfactants in catalytic oxidation systems, and the loss of surfactants solubilization capacity during oxidation process. The effect of surfactants on the degradation behavior of NAPL contaminants is then thoroughly summarized in terms of degradation kinetics, byproducts and degradation mechanisms. This review demonstrates that it is crucial to minimize the negative effects of surfactants on NAPL contaminants oxidation process by fully understanding the interaction between surfactants and oxidation systems, which would promote the successful implementation of surfactant-coupled ISCO technology in remediation of NAPLs-contaminated sites.
