Polyacetylenic Oleanane-Type Triterpene Saponins from the Roots of Panax japonicus

Curative effect of the total saponins of Panax japonicus (TSPJ) on type 2 diabetes: Focusing on VEGFA

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the total saponins of Panax japonicus (TSPJ) on Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

RESULTS

The intervention of TSPJ was found to have the ability to reverse physiological indicators associated with T2DM, while also enhancing the expression of genes involved in glucose metabolism and intestinal homeostasis. Additionally, alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota were observed. Based on the findings of experimental results and network pharmacology analysis, it is evident that vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) serves as a prominent shared target between TSPJ and diabetes. The outcomes observed in T2DM mice overexpressing VEGFA align with those observed in T2DM mice treated with TSPJ.

CONCLUSIONS

TSPJ administration and VEGFA overexpression yield similar effects on T2DM in mice. Thus, in terms of mechanism, by upregulating the expression of VEGFA, TSPJ may ameliorate metabolic imbalance, preserve intestinal homeostasis, and lessen the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. The findings demonstrated the viability of using VEGFA as a type 2 diabetes therapy option and offered important insights into the therapeutic mechanisms by TSPJ in the management of T2DM. To determine the exact mechanisms behind the effects of TSPJ and VEGFA and to assess their potential therapeutic uses, more research efforts are necessary.

Two new triterpenoid saponins and two new goodyerosides isolated from the whole plant of Tournefortia sibirica

Two new triterpenoid saponins (oleanolic acid 2β-hydroxyl-3-O-β-D-glucuronopyranoside-6'-O-buthyl ester (1) and oleanolic acid 2β-hydroxyl-3-O-[β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-6'-O-methylester]-28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2)) and two new goodyerosides (4-methylenefuran-2(5H)-one (6'-O-vanilloyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), 3-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone, 4-(6'-O-vanilloyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4)), together with seven known compounds (5-11) were isolated from the whole plant of Tournefortia sibirica L. The chemical structures of the compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D NMR) and HR-ESI-MS. Compounds 1, 6 and 9 showed significant cytotoxicity towards A549, SK-Hep1 and HeLa cells, with IC50 values ranging from 1.68 ± 0.09 to 6.87 ± 0.13 μM.

Effects and mechanism of extracts rich in phenylpropanoids-polyacetylenes and polysaccharides from Codonopsis Radix on improving scopolamine-induced memory impairment of mice

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive developmental neurodegenerative disease that primarily develops in old age. Memory impairment is an important manifestation of AD. It has been demonstrated that inflammation and oxidative stress are important mediators in the development and progression of AD. Codonopsis Radix (CR) has a long history of consumption, exhibiting lots of beneficial health effects, including anti-ageing, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, studies on the effects of CR on scopolamine-induced amnesia have rarely been reported.

AIM OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study was to investigate the ameliorative effect of macromolecular portion (polysaccharides, POL) and small molecule portion (fine extract rich in phenylpropanoids-polyacetylenes, EPP) from CR on improving scopolamine-induced memory impairment and to elucidate the potential mechanism of action.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

C57BL/6 mice were pretreated with EPP (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g/kg), POL (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 g/kg), and donepezil (5 mg/kg) by gavage for 7 days, followed by intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine (1 mg/kg) to induce memory impairment. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing, histopathological, western blotting, and biochemical analysis (various biochemical markers and protein expressions related to cholinergic system, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation) were performed to further elucidate the mechanism of action. Moreover, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities of POL, EPP, and its main compounds tangshenoside I, lobetyol, lobetyolin, and lobetyolinin were evaluated.

RESULTS

Experiments have confirmed that both POL and EPP from CR could improve scopolamine-induced spatial learning memory deficits. Both of them could regulate cholinergic function by inhibiting AChE and activating choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activities. They also could enhance antioxidant defense via increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and anti-inflammatory function through suppressing inflammatory factors (nitric oxide, TNF-α, and IL-6) and regulating gut flora. Besides, in vitro experiments demonstrated that four monomeric compounds and EPP, except POL, exhibited inhibition of AChE activity.

CONCLUSION

EPP and POL from CR exert a beneficial effect on learning and memory processes in mice with scopolamine-induced memory impairment. CR may be a promising medicine for preventing and improving learning memory.

Repair-driven DNA tetrahedral nanomachine combined with DNAzyme for 8-oxo guanine DNA glycosylase activity assay, drug screening and intracellular imaging

8-oxo guanine DNA glycosylase (8-oxoG DNA glycosylase), a crucial DNA repair enzyme, is essential for maintaining genome integrity and preventing diseases caused by DNA oxidative damage. Imaging 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase in living cells requires a dependable technique. In this study, we designed a DNAzyme-modified DNA tetrahedral nanomachine (DTDN) powered by 8-oxoG restoration. Incorporating a molecular beacon probe (MB), the constructed platform was used for amplified in situ monitoring of 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase. Under normal conditions, duplexing with a complementary strand modified with two 8-oxoG sites inhibited the activity of DNAzyme. The restoration of DNAzyme activity by the repair of intracellular 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase on 8-oxoG bases can initiate a signal amplification reaction. This detection system can detect 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase activity linearly between 0 and 20 U mL-1, with a detection limit as low as 0.52 U mL-1. Using this method, we were able to screen 14 natural compounds and identify 6 of them as 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase inhibitors. In addition, a novel approach was utilized to assess the activity of 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase in living cells. In conclusion, this method provides a universal tool for monitoring the activity of 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase in vitro and in living cells, which holds great promise for elucidating the enzyme's functionality and facilitating drug screening endeavors.

Neurotrophic Natural Products

Neurotrophins (NGF, BDNF, NT3, NT4) can decrease cell death, induce differentiation, as well as sustain the structure and function of neurons, which make them promising therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. However, neurotrophins have not been very effective in clinical trials mostly because they cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier owing to being high-molecular-weight proteins. Thus, neurotrophin-mimic small molecules, which stimulate the synthesis of endogenous neurotrophins or enhance neurotrophic actions, may serve as promising alternatives to neurotrophins. Small-molecular-weight natural products, which have been used in dietary functional foods or in traditional medicines over the course of human history, have a great potential for the development of new therapeutic agents against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. In this contribution, a variety of natural products possessing neurotrophic properties such as neurogenesis, neurite outgrowth promotion (neuritogenesis), and neuroprotection are described, and a focus is made on the chemistry and biology of several neurotrophic natural products.

Polyacetylenes in herbal medicine: A comprehensive review of its occurrence, pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacokinetics (2014-2021)

Polyacetylenes are a kind of small active compounds with carbon-carbon triple bond with vast occurrence in plants. Polyacetylenes have attracted considerable attention owing to their diverse biofunctions like tumor suppression, immunity regulation, depression resistance and neural protection. The present review intends to reconstruct data concerning the occurrence, pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacokinetics of polyacetylenes from herbal medicine in a systematic and integrated way, with a view to backing up their curative potential and healthcare properties (2014-2021). The natural polyacetylene-related data were all acquired from the scientific search engines and databases that are globally recognized, such as PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, SciFinderⁿ and CNKI. A total of 183 polyacetylenes were summarized in this paper. Modern pharmacological studies indicated that polyacetylenes possess multiple biological activities including antitumor, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, anti-depression, anti-obesity, hypoglycemic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, hepatoprotective and renoprotective activities. As important bioactive components of herbal medicine, the pharmacological curative potential of polyacetylenes has been described against carcinomas, inflammatory responses, central nervous system, endocrine disorders and microbial infection in this review. While, further in-depth studies on the aspects of polyacetylenes for toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and molecular mechanisms are still limited, thereby intensive research and assessments should be performed.

Advances and challenges in ginseng research from 2011 to 2020: the phytochemistry, quality control, metabolism, and biosynthesis

Covering: 2011 to the end of 2020Panax species (Araliaceae), particularly P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius, and P. notoginseng, have a long history of medicinal use because of their remarkable tonifying effects, and currently serve as crucial sources for various healthcare products, functional foods, and cosmetics, aside from their vast clinical preparations. The huge market demand on a global scale prompts the continuous prosperity in ginseng research concerning the discovery of new compounds, precise quality control, ADME (absorption/disposition/metabolism/excretion), and biosynthesis pathways. Benefitting from the ongoing rapid development of analytical technologies, e.g. multi-dimensional chromatography (MDC), personalized mass spectrometry (MS) scan strategies, and multi-omics, highly recognized progress has been made in driving ginseng analysis towards "systematicness, integrity, personalization, and intelligentization". Herein, we review the advances in the phytochemistry, quality control, metabolism, and biosynthesis pathway of ginseng over the past decade (2011-2020), with 410 citations. Emphasis is placed on the introduction of new compounds isolated (saponins and polysaccharides), and the emerging novel analytical technologies and analytical strategies that favor ginseng's authentic use and global consumption. Perspectives on the challenges and future trends in ginseng analysis are also presented.

Polyacetylene Glycosides: Isolation, Biological Activities and Synthesis

Polyacetylene glycosides (PAGs) constitute a relatively small class of secondary metabolites characterized by the presence of a sugar unit anomerically connected to a polyacetylene. These compounds are found in fungi, seaweed, and more often in plants. PAGs exhibit a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities and, as a result, the literature of these compounds has grown exponentially in recent years.

A radar-like DNA monitor for RNase H-targeted natural compounds screening and RNase H activity in situ detection

Ribonuclease H is essential for the research and development of complex pathema. The high rigidity and versatility of DNA tetrahedrons means they are often used in biosensing systems. Inspired by "radar" technology, we proposed a radar-like monitor to detect RNase H activity in vitro and in situ by integrating DNA tetrahedral elements. The structure of a radar-like monitor was self-assembled from five customized single nucleic acid strands. Four DNA strands were assembled as DNA tetrahedrons with a long strand labeled by Dabcyl (quencher) at one of the apexes, while the fifth strand (DNA-RNA heterozygous strand) was labeled with a FAM (Fluorophore) hybrid with a long strand. The fluorescence was quenched because the fluorophore and the quencher were very close. In the presence of RNase H, the RNA chain was hydrolyzed and the fluorophore released, resulting in fluorescence recovery. The radar-like monitor was used to detect the RNase H activity in vitro with a detection limit of 0.01 U mL^-1. Based on the RNase H activity detection and the inhibitory effect of natural-compounds-targeting RNase H, three inhibitors were obtained among 35 compounds extracted from Panax japonicus. Therefore, the radar-like monitor was successfully used to detect RNase H activity in situ due to the long-term anti-DNase I effect of the RNA/DNA hybrid structure and DNA tetrahedrons structure. Overall, this radar-like monitor can effectively avoid false-positive signals and significantly improve the accuracy, precision, and reliability of detection. It is expected that the development of such an intelligent nano-platform will open the door to cancer diagnosis and treatment in clinical systems.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of chemical constituents from the flower buds of Buddleja officinalis

Five new glycosides including mimenghuasu A and B (1-2), isolinarin (3), cyclocitralosides A and B (4-5), along with forty-seven known compounds were isolated from the flower buds of Buddleja officinalis. These structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis (UV, IR, 1 D, 2 D NMR, and MS spectra). The anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated compounds were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on the expression of TNF-α (LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells) and MTT experiment on LPS-induced HUVECs proliferation effects. Good suppressive effects on the expression of TNF-α were shown by 4 and 5 with IC₅₀ values of 19.35 and 22.10 μM, respectively, compared to positive control indomethacin (IC₅₀ 16.40 μM). In addition to this, some isolated compounds exhibited excellent antioxidant activities including compounds 16, 18, 29, 39, and 47 (IC₅₀ μM: 82.59, 72.94, 33.65, 46.67, and 20.81, respectively) with almost the same or stronger potency with reference to vitamin C as positive control (IC₅₀ 81.83 μM).

Transcriptomic and metabonomic profiling reveal the anti-obesity effects of Chikusetsusaponin V, a compound extracted from Panax japonicus

OBJECTIVES

To explore the in vivo anti-obesity effect of chikusetsusaponin V and explore the underlying mechanism by transcriptomic and metabonomic methods.

METHODS

The physiological parameters of high-fat-diet induced obese mice administered with or without 25 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg of chikusetsusaponin V by gavage for 16 weeks were recorded. In addition, the RNA-sequencing and UHPLC-Q-TOF techniques were applied to obtain the transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling, respectively.

KEY FINDINGS

Chikusetsusaponin V could significantly alleviate the high-fat-diet induced increase in the weight of the whole body and obesity-related organs or tissues, and ameliorate the lipid content in the blood, the lipid accumulation in the livers, as well as the hypertrophy of the fat tissues. Importantly, transcriptomic results revealed that more than 30 genes involved in the pathway which closely associates with obesity, were significantly altered. Moreover, metabolomic data indicated the key differential metabolites enriched in the pathways such as the activated protein kinase signaling pathway which is a vital mediator of obesity and other processes.

CONCLUSIONS

The integrative analysis highlighted that chikusetsusaponin V significantly influenced the activated protein kinase signaling pathway at both transcriptomic and metabolomic levels, thereby exerting anti-obesity effects.

A mathematical model for quality evaluation of total saponins of Panax japonicas based on hypolipidemic activity

Objective

The chemical finger printing-based methods for evaluating TCMs quality can report partial of TCMs quality without linking to effective constituents. In this study, a mathematical model was established for the quality evaluation of total saponins of Panax japonicus (TSPJ), a folk medicine in China and Japan for treating diseases, through coupling the dynamic changes of chemical constitutions with corresponding activities.

Methods

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints were applied to establish the chromatographic database of TSPJ. The associated hypolipidemic activity database was determined by TG assay using HepG2 cell model. Correlation analyses of two databases were performed by partial least squares (PLS) for calculating regression coefficients, and the interval value of YZL value (the ratio of positive and negative peak-to-peak area coefficient) closely related to hypolipidemic activity was refined by the formula of Norminv function to value the quality of TSPJ.

Results

In this study, the chromatographic data of 16 common peaks were obtained from 20 batches of TSPJ. After the estimate by this mathematical evaluation model, seven peaks were positively correlated with hypolipidemic activity, and nine peaks were negatively correlated with hypolipidemic activity. When the YZL value was less than 0.7861, the quality of sample was inferior, while YZL value was more than 6.6992, and the quality of samples was superior. The quality of another ten batches of TSPJ was further assessed to verify this method.

Conclusion

These results indicated that the established model could be usefully applied to evaluate the quality of TSPJ in the hypolipidemic activity.

Panax japonicus and chikusetsusaponins: A review of diverse biological activities and pharmacology mechanism

Panax japonicus, which in the Tujia dialect is known as “Baisan Qi” and “Zhujieshen”, is a classic “qi” drug of Tujia ethnomedicine and it has unique effects on disease caused by “qi” stagnation and blood stasis. This paper serves as the basis of further scientific research and development of Panax japonicus. The pharmacology effects of molecular pharmacology were discussed and summarized. P. japonicus plays an important role on several diseases, such as rheumatic arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular agents, and this review provides new insights into P. japonicus as promising agents to substitute ginseng and notoginseng.

Flavonoid glycosides from the rhizomes of Pronephrium penangianum

Six flavonoid glycosides jixueqisus A-F, together with nine known flavonoids, were isolated from the rhizomes of the fern Pronephrium penangianum. Among them, two red pigments jixueqisus A and B possess the same rare 6,8-dimethyl-2-phenyl-7H-1-benzopyran-7-one skeleton (a long conjugated system). Jixueqisu Cwas a dihydrochalcone glycoside, jixueqisu D was a chalcone glycoside, jixueqisu E was an aurone glycoside, and jixueqisu F was a flavonone glycoside. Interestingly, jixueqisus D-F, (2S)-5,2',5'-trihydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone and 5,2',5'-trihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone possessed a 2,5-dihydroxy substituted benzene ring (B-ring). Their structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic and chemical methods. Furthermore, the plausible biosynthetic pathways of jixueqisus A-F were discussed, respectively. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their activities against the proliferation of MCF-7, HepG-2, HCT-116 and BGC-823 tumor cell lines, four known flavane-4-ol glycosides, abacopterins A and C, eruberin B and triphyllin A, exhibited moderate activities to various cell lines.

Inhibition of chikusetsusaponin IVa on inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cell line via MAPK pathway

Chikusetsusaponin IVa (CHS-IVa), a saponin from herb Panacis japonicas, possesses extensive biological activities. However, the roles and underlying mechanisms of CHS-IVa on inflammation have not been fully clarified in the setting of murine macrophages. In this study, we found that CHS-IVa effectively reduced the expression of inflammatory mediators, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), cyclooxygenase (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells. Meanwhile, CHS-IVa could also evidently bate the contents of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in cell culture supernatants. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activity of CHS-IVa may be via diminishing the phosphorylation of extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK), p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). Collectively, these findings will help to understand of the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of P. japonicas deeply, and suggest a validated therapeutic use as an anti-inflammatory medication.

Effects of Red and Fermented Ginseng and Ginsenosides on Allergic Disorders

Both white ginseng (WG, dried root of Panax sp.) and red ginseng (RG, steamed and dried root of Panax sp.) are reported to exhibit a variety of pharmacological effects such as anticancer, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective activities. These ginsengs contain hydrophilic sugar-conjugated ginsenosides and polysaccharides as the bioactive constituents. When taken orally, their hydrophilic constituents are metabolized into hydrophobic ginsenosides compound K, Rh1, and Rh2 that are absorbable into the blood. These metabolites exhibit the pharmacological effects more strongly than hydrophilic parental constituents. To enforce these metabolites, fermented WG and RG are developed. Moreover, natural products including ginseng are frequently used for the treatment of allergic disorders. Therefore, this review introduces the current knowledge related to the effectiveness of ginseng on allergic disorders including asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and pruritus. We discuss how ginseng, its constituents, and its metabolites regulate allergy-related immune responses. We also describe how ginseng controls allergic disorders.

Xuetonglactones A-F: Highly Oxidized Lanostane and Cycloartane Triterpenoids From Kadsura heteroclita Roxb. Craib

Xuetonglactones A–F (1–6), six unreported highly oxidized lanostane- and cycloartane-type triterpenoids along with 22 known scaffolds (7–28) were isolated from the stems of Kadsura heteroclita (Roxb.) Craib. Compared with previous congeners, xuetonglactone A (1), possesses an unprecedented 20,21-α-epoxide, and xuetonglactone D (4) features an unusual 19-α-hydroperoxyl moiety. The structures and the absolute configurations of the compounds were established by extensive one- and two-dimensional NMR, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopic analysis, with those of 1 and 5 confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited inhibition of iNOS activity in LPS-induced macrophages with IC₅₀ values of 22.0, and 17.0 μg/mL, respectively. While compounds 6, 7, 8, and 24 showed potent cytotoxic activities against human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa) with the IC₅₀ values of 4.0, 5.8, 5.0, and 6.4 μM, and against human gastric cancer cells (BGC 823) with the IC₅₀ values of 2.0, 5.0, 2.5, and 2.0 μM, respectively. Moreover, plausible biogenetic pathways of (1–6) were also proposed.

Schinortriterpenoids from Tujia ethnomedicine Xuetong-The stems of Kadsura heteroclita

In the present work, we take advantage of the characteristic NMR signal (δ_C-10 = 96.0-99.9) for guiding the isolation of schinortriterpenoids (SNTs) from n-butanol fraction of stems of Kadsura heteroclita which is a Tujia ethnomedicine with trivial name "Xuetong". This effort resulted in the identification of three unreported 3,4:9,10-disecocycloartane triterpenoids xuetongdilactones A-C and three undescribed SNTs xuetongdilactones D-F, along with two known SNTs, namely, wuweizidilactone B and micrandilactone B. The structures of the unreported compounds were established based on 1D, and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, and ECD spectroscopic data analysis. The absolute stereochemistry of xuetongdilactone A was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis along with ECD calculation. The antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were evaluated for all the isolated compounds.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of the Saponins in Panacis Japonici Rhizoma Using Ultra-Fast Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Triple Quadrupole-Time of Flight Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Ultra-Fast Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Triple Quadrupole-Linear Ion Trap Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Panacis Japonici Rhizoma (PJR) contains various kinds of saponins, which possesses extensive pharmacological activities, but studies of comprehensive analysis of its saponins were limited. Thus, ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole-time of flight tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-Triple TOF-MS/MS) and ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole-linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS) methods were established for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the saponins in PJR, separately. Fifty three saponins in PJR were identified by UFLC-Triple TOF-MS/MS method, 23 saponins of which were unequivocally identified by reference substances. In addition, fragmentation pathways of different types of saponins were preliminarily deduced by fragmentation behavior of 53 saponins. Furthermore, the simultaneous determination of the contents of 13 saponins in PJR samples harvested at different times were analyzed by UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS method. Furthermore, the quality of the samples was evaluated by grey relational analysis. This study might be beneficial to the quality assessment and control of PJR. Meanwhile, it might provide the basic information for confirming its optimal harvested period.

An Integrated LC-MS-Based Strategy for the Quality Assessment and Discrimination of Three Panax Species

The quality assessment and discrimination of Panax herbs are very challenging to perform due to the complexity and variability of their chemical compositions. An integrated strategy was established using UHPLC-Q-Exactive/HRMS and HPLC-ESI-MS/MS to achieve an accurate, rapid, and comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of Panax japonicas (PJ), Panax japonicus var. major (PM), and Panax zingiberensis (PZ). Additionally, discrimination among the three species was explored with partial least squares–discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and orthogonal partial least squares–discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) score plots. A total of 101 compounds were plausibly or unambiguously identified, including 82 from PJ, 78 from PM, and 67 from PZ. Among them, 16 representative ginsenosides were further quantified in three herbs. A clear discrimination between the three species was observed through a multivariate statistical analysis on the quantitative data. Nine compounds that allowed for discrimination between PJ, PM, and PZ were discovered. Notably, ginsenoside Rf (G-Rf), ginsenoside F3 (G-F3), and chikusetsu saponin IV (CS-IV) were the three most important differential compounds. The research indicated that the integrated LC-MS-based strategy can be applied for the quality assessment and discrimination of the three Panax herbs.
