Abstract
A modular protocol that achieved the efficient synthesis of imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazoles/selenadiazoles via using easily available N-tosylhydrazones, chalcone derivatives, and KSCN/KSeCN is proposed. The method overcomes the elongated synthesis steps and prefunctionalized synthons of previous methods. It solves the problem of traditional preparation methods, which makes it difficult to synthesize thickened selenium-containing heterocyclic molecules, further expanding the number of members in its family. The fluorescence of these compounds also reveals the potential values of the scaffolds we synthesized.

Abstract
The tetrahydropyridazine motif is widely present in plenty of natural products and biologically active molecules. Easily prepared from the condensation of carbonyls with hydrazines, hydrazones are versatile synthetic building blocks that are frequently used in organic synthesis. Hydrazones are also utilized in the synthesis of nitrogen-containing molecules, especially nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The presence of the CN-N unit in the product makes hydrazones ideal substrates for the synthesis of tetrahydropyridazine derivatives. Here, in this review, we summarize the recent progress in the construction of variously substituted tetrahydropyridazines from different hydrazone derivatives together with mechanism discussions.

Abstract
N'-Benzylidene-N-homoallylacetohydrazides were designed and synthesized as novel skeletons for the construction of functionalized tetrahydropyridazines. A series of aryl- and alkylsulfonylated tetrahydropyridazines were obtained in yields of up to 94% employing sulfonyl chlorides as the sulfonyl radical sources under visible-light irradiation. Besides, sulfonylated dihydropyrazoles were also produced from N-allyl-N'-benzylideneacetohydrazides. Mechanistic investigations indicated that both energy transfer and single electron transfer processes were involved in accomplishing the radical 6/5-endo-trig cyclization to the C═N bond.

Abstract
A metal-free strategy, alternative to the known complex cycloaddition reactions, towards 2-carboxylated thieno [2,3-b] indole derivatives has been successfully developed. The novel approach involves as starting materials easy accessible 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes and indoline 2-thione and requires mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, the easy work-up required makes this method amenable for a one-pot approach as demonstrated in the preparation of thienodolin, a natural product isolated from Streptomyces albogriseolus that exhibits valuable biological properties.

Abstract
Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs), mainly caused by eutrophication, have deleterious impacts on water resources and pose a great threat to human health and natural ecosystems. Thus, an environmentally-friendly method to inhibit HCBs is urgently needed. Learning from nature, herein, natural product cercosporin, produced by the fungi Cercospora to damage plant cells under natural sunlight, was developed as a powerful photosensitive algicidal reagent to inhibit HCBs. Microcystis aeruginosa could be severely inactivated by 20 μM cercosporin in 36 h with 95% inhibition ratio under 23 W compact fluorescent light irradiation. Further mechanism investigation showed that algal cell walls and membranes along with the antioxidant and photosynthetic systems were damaged via two mechanisms, those being, reactive oxygen species generation and cell adsorption. More importantly, the practical applicability of cercosporin was demonstrated by its effectiveness in a 2 L-scale photoinactivation experiment using cyanobacterial blooms from Taihu Lake, China under natural sunlight with a lower dosage of cercosporin (7.5 μM). This study established the bifunctional mechanisms by which cercosporin inactivates HCBs, opening design possibilities for the development of novel photosensitive algicidal reagents to control HCBs.

Abstract
We have developed an electrochemical approach for the synthesis of fully substituted 1,2,3-thiadiazoles from α-phenylhydrazones at room temperature, which is very challenging and complementary to the conventional thermal reactions. The key step involves anodic oxidation of phenylhydrazone derivatives at a constant current followed by N,S-heterocyclization. The protocol is remarkable in that it is free of a base and free of an external oxidant and can be converted to a gram scale for postsynthetic drug development with functional thiadiazoles. Most importantly, the electrochemical transformation reflected efficient electro-oxidation with an operationally friendly easy procedure with ample functional molecules. Cyclic voltammograms support the mechanism of this electro-oxidative cyclization process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Owing to the excellent properties of photosensitization, cercosporin, one of naturally occurring perylenequinonoid pigments, has been widely used in photodynamic therapy, or as an antimicrobial agent and an organophotocatalyst. However, because of low efficiency of total chemical synthesis and low yield of current microbial fermentation, the limited production restricts its broad applications. Thus, the strategies to improve the production of cercosporin were highly desired. Besides traditional optimization methods, here we screened leaf-spot-disease-related endophytic bacteria to co-culture with our previous identified Cercospora sp. JNU001 to increase cercosporin production. RESULTS Bacillus velezensis B04 and Lysinibacillus sp. B15 isolated from leaves with leaf spot diseases were found to facilitate cercosporin secretion into the broth and then enhance the production of cercosporin. After 4 days of co-culture, Bacillus velezensis B04 allowed to increase the production of cercosporin from 128.2 mg/L to 984.4 mg/L, which was 7.68-fold of the previously reported one. Lysinibacillus sp. B15 could also enhance the production of cercosporin with a yield of 626.3 mg/L, which was 4.89-fold higher than the starting condition. More importantly, we found that bacteria B04 and B15 employed two different mechanisms to improve the production of cercosporin, in which B04 facilitated cercosporin secretion into the broth by loosening and damaging the hyphae surface of Cercospora sp. JNU001 while B15 could adsorb cercosporin to improve its secretion. CONCLUSIONS We here established a novel and effective co-culture method to improve the production of cercosporin by increasing its secretion ability from Cercospora sp. JNU001, allowing to develop more potential applications of cercosporin.

Abstract
An operationally simple and sustainable one-pot photo-oxidative formal [3 + 2] heterocyclization of β-ketothioamides with aryldiazonium salts catalyzed by Ru(bpy)3Cl2 has been realized to provide 2,4-disubstituted 5-imino-1,2,3-thiadiazoles in good to high yields under mild reaction conditions for the first time. The reaction proceeded via an α-phenylhydrazone adduct of thioamides leading to 1,2,3-thiadiazoles via N-S bond formation at room temperature. Notably, the products possess Z-stereochemistry with regard to the exocyclic C═N double bond at the 5-position of the ring.

Abstract
An unprecedented [4 + 2] annulation reaction between in situ formed azoalkenes and azlactones has been developed. This reaction provides a facile access to an array of 4,5-dihydropyridazin-3(2H)-one derivatives, which are very promising in medicinal applications as potential biologically active candidates. Notably, these dihydropyridazinones could also be synthesized via a one-pot reaction protocol by using the in situ formed azlactones from N-acyl amino acids and in situ generated azoalkenes from α-halogeno hydrazones. The potential applications of the methodology were also demonstrated by gram-scale experiments and the versatile conversions of the products into other nitrogen-containing compounds.

Zn(II)-catalyzed
divergent synthesis of functionalized polycyclic
indolines through formal [3 + 2] and [4 + 2] cycloadditions of indoles
with 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes (DDs) is reported. The nature and type of
substituents of substrates are found to act as a chemical switch to
trigger two distinct reaction pathways and to obtain two different
types of products upon the influence of the same catalyst. The mechanism
of both [4 + 2] and [3 + 2] cycloadditions was investigated and fully
rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
An iodine/DMSO catalyzed selective cyclization of N-tosylhydrazones with sulfur without adding external oxidant was developed for the synthesis of 4-aryl-1,2,3-thiadiazoles. In this reaction, oxidation of HI by using DMSO as dual oxidant and solvent is the key, which allowed the regeneration of I2, ensuring thus the success of the synthesis. This protocol features by simple operation, high step-economy (one-pot fashion), broad substrate scope as well as scale-up ability.

Abstract
Herein, we have developed naturally-occurring Emodin, which is commercially available at low-cost, as a novel organic photocatalyst for the first time. Emodin was successfully employed in the selective oxidation of sulfides promoted by visible-light, delivering valuable sulfoxides with high efficiency. Mechanistic investigations suggested both single-electron transfer (SET) and energy transfer (EnT) pathways might be involved in the oxidation reaction.

Abstract
The base-induced unprecedented tandem [4 + 2] and [1 + 2] annulation reaction of in situ formed 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes and crotonate-derived sulfur ylides is reported. This protocol provides a novel and practical method for the synthesis of cyclopropane-fused tetrahydropyridazines with a quaternary carbon center in synthetically useful yield. In this tandem reaction, three new bonds were formed in one pot, and the crotonate-derived sulfur ylide serves as a C3 synthon.
