Waste-Derived Sustainable Fluorescent Nanocarbon-Coated Breathable Functional Fabric for Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Applications

Fluorescent carbon dots in situ polymerized biodegradable semi-interpenetrating tough hydrogel films with antioxidant and antibacterial activity for applications in food industry

A flexible, antioxidant, biodegradable, and UV-resistant polymeric nanocomposite hydrogel with heteroatom-doped carbon dots (CDs) has been fabricated using a simple one-step in situ free radical gelation process. The hydrogel formation and their physico-mehcanical characteristics have been assessed by rheology, uniaxial tensile and compression testing. The water uptake behaviour of the hydrogels is controlled by the CDs by manipulating their internal morphology and porosity. The porous nature of the hydrogels has been found from their scanning electron microscopic images which are also supported by their anomalous diffusion-based transport mechanism. The rheological signatures of the hydrogels show delayed network rupturing due to the secondary physical crosslinking alleviated by CDs. Moreover, CDs are directly influencing the permeabilites (oxygen and moisture) by lowering the values compared to their neat hydrogel films which are essential for a packing material. The biodegradability of the hydrogel films showed gradual weight loss (<75 %) within 3 weeks. The hydrogel films also have been qualified to be acted as antibacterial and antioxidant material. The shelf-life and non-leaching of CDs from gel matrices are also performed which shows its excellent capability to be used as a potential antibacterial, biodegradable, antioxidant alternative packaging material in food sectors.

Sensitive detections for three kinds of vitamin B in aqueous solution and on test paper by fluorescent dual-emission carbon dots

Although a few of fluorescent probes based on carbon dots (CDs) for vitamin B (VB) determination have been emerged, none of them can realize the detection of different kinds of VB. In this paper, nitrogen, chlorine co-doped dual-emission CDs (N, Cl-CDs) with emissions at 404 nm and 595 nm have been easily synthesized. VB2, VB9 and VB12 can all induce obvious fluorescence turn-off response toward the N, Cl-CDs. Based on that, three types of VBs are quantitatively and sensitively evaluated in aqueous solution with wide concentration ranges of 14.9-135.0 μM, 34.7-89.8 μM and 29.8-79.8 μM, respectively. Importantly, visual semiquantitative detection of VBs on a test strip are also proposed. Moreover, the current N, Cl-CDs have been successfully applied to the detection of VBs in real samples. The N, Cl-CDs are sensitively multifunctional sensors for three kinds of VBs in aqueous solution and the visual semiquantitative detection by test paper assay is simple, portable and inexpensive.

Recent Progress in Folic Acid Detection Based on Fluorescent Carbon Dots as Sensors: A Review

Folic acid (FA) is a water-soluble vitamin found in diverse natural sources and is crucial for preserving human health. The risk of health issues due to FA deficiency underscores the need for a straightforward and sensitive FA detection methodology. Carbon dots (CDs) have gained significant attention owing to their exceptional fluorescence performance, biocompatibility, and easy accessibility. Consequently, numerous research studies have concentrated on developing advanced CD fluorescent probes to enable swift and precise FA detection. Despite these efforts, there is still a requirement for a thorough overview of the efficient synthesis of CDs and their practical applications in FA detection to further promote the widespread use of CDs. This review paper focuses on the practical applications of CD sensors for FA detection. It begins with an in-depth introduction to FA and CDs. Following that, based on various synthetic approaches, the prepared CDs are classified into diverse detection methods, such as single sensing, visual detection, and electrochemical methods. Furthermore, persistent challenges and potential avenues are highlighted for future research to provide valuable insights into crafting effective CDs and detecting FA.

Hydrothermal synthesis of B, S, and N-doped carbon quantum dots for colorimetric sensing of heavy metal ions

In this study, glucose was used as the carbon source to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and also aimed to synthesize CQDs doped with heteroatoms such as sulphur, nitrogen, and boron to enhance their functionality. The obtained material has been characterized by several techniques. According to FL analysis, the highest peaks for CQD, N-CQD, B-CQD, and S-CQD were determined as 432 nm (ex 350), 425 (ex 350), 430 nm (ex 340 nm), and 436 nm (ex 340 nm), respectively. FTIR spectra showed different characteristic peaks for CQD, and the FTIR results show that CQDs have a unique structure. According to TEM analysis, the morphology of all CQDs was found to be spherical and monodisperse with average sizes in the range of 5-7 nm. The characterization results of CQDs show that the addition of heteroatoms changes the properties of CQDs. The synthesized CQDs were also tested as colorimetric sensors for the detection of heavy metals. It was observed that CQDs detected Fe3+ metal ions, B-CQD and S-CQD detected Fe3+ and Ag+ metal ions, and N-CQDs detected Ca2+ metal ions. Sensor studies were performed for all CQDs and linear plots were obtained against metal concentrations in the range of 0.06-1.23 μM. LOD values for CQD, N-CQD, S-CQD, and B-CQD were calculated as 0.187 μM (Fe3+), 0.391 μM (Ca2+), 0.224 μM (Fe3+)-0.442 μM (Ag+), and 0.182 μM (Fe3+)-0.174 μM (Ag+), respectively. The results show that the addition of B, N, and S atoms to CQDs plays a role in the improvement and modification of colorimetric sensor properties and has the potential to be used in sensor applications for the detection of heavy metals in areas such as the environment and health.

Modifying cellulose fibres with carbon dots: a promising approach for the development of antimicrobial fibres

This study focuses on the development of antimicrobial fibres for use in medical and healthcare textile industries. Carbon dots (CDs) were designed with boronic acid groups for the attachment to cellulose fibres found in cotton textiles and to enhance their attachment to glycogens on bacterial surfaces. Boronic acid-based and curcumin-based CDs were prepared and characterized using various techniques, showing a nanoscale size and zeta potential values. The CDs inhibited the growth of both Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli bacteria, with UV-activated CDs demonstrating improved antibacterial activity. The antimicrobial activity of the CDs was then tested, revealing strong adherence to cellulose paper fibres with no CD diffusion and potent inhibition of bacterial growth. Cytotoxicity assays on human cell lines showed no toxicity towards cells at concentrations of up to 100 µg ml-1 but exhibited increased toxicity at concentrations exceeding 1000 µg ml-1. However, CD-modified cellulose paper fibres showed no toxicity against human cell lines, highlighting the antimicrobial properties of the CD-modified cellulose fibres are safe for human use. These findings show promising potential for applications in both industrial and clinical settings.

Revealing the high efficiency of fluorescence quenching of rhodamine B by triangular silver nanodisks due to the inner filter effect mechanism

Performing effective fluorescence quenching based on a metal nanomaterial is essential to construct fluorescence sensors. Silver nanomaterials are well known as an excellent candidate for an absorber in fluorescence sensing systems. Herein, we investigated the fluorescence quenching of rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of triangular silver nanodisks in which perfect overlap between the absorption of the absorber and the fluorescence of the fluorophore was observed. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of RhB was investigated under various excitation wavelengths, together with measurement of the fluorescence lifetime. The quenching efficiency of RhB was proportional to the wavelength excitation. Remarkably, the highest efficiency of fluorescence quenching of RhB was achieved (∼60%). The quenching mechanism was investigated and revealed to be mostly due to the inner filter effect (IFE) mechanism, without the contribution of energy transfer. This result shows a completely different story from most previous studies based on silver nanoparticles, where energy transfer was reported to play a significant role.

Innovative snail-mucus-extract (SME)-coated nanoparticles exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects for potential skin cancer prevention and treatment

Nowadays, several studies have highlighted the ability of snail mucus in maintaining healthy skin conditions due to its emollient, regenerative and protective properties. In particular, mucus derived from H. aspersa muller has been reported to have beneficial effects such as antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and wound repair capacity. To enhance antioxidant activity of snail mucus, it was extracted in a hydroalcoholic solution and consequently freeze-dried. The obtained snail mucus extract (SME) was indeed endowed with higher antioxidant activity observed in cell-free models, however it was not possible to test its effects in cellular models as it creates a thick film on the cell surface. Therefore, in order to enhance beneficial effects of snail mucus and extend its potential use, SME was used to develop snail mucus extract-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-SME) which exhibited anti-inflammatory properties on non-tumorigenic cells. LPS-induced inflammation in human NCTC keratinocytes was used as model to investigate the in vitro cytoprotective effects of nanoparticles. Co-treatment with LPS and AuNPs-SME significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine transcription. Moreover, we demonstrated that AuNPs-SME not only can be used for anti-inflammatory treatments, but also as a sunscreen and antioxidant for potential cosmetic applications. Furthermore, AuNPs-SME's ability to selectively inhibit the growth of two human melanoma cell lines without affecting immortalized human keratinocyte viability in the same conditions was assessed. Thus, we demonstrated that snail mucus is suitable for creating innovative formulations and it can be considered a valid candidate for cosmeceutical applications to enrich the snail mucus based anti-age and sunscreen products already present on the market. Moreover, innovative formulations containing snail mucus can be potentially used for the treatment of specific skin neoplasms.

MXene-Based Elastomer Mimetic Stretchable Sensors: Design, Properties, and Applications

Flexible sensors based on MXene-polymer composites are highly prospective for next-generation wearable electronics used in human-machine interfaces. One of the motivating factors behind the progress of flexible sensors is the steady arrival of new conductive materials. MXenes, a new family of 2D nanomaterials, have been drawing attention since the last decade due to their high electronic conductivity, processability, mechanical robustness and chemical tunability. In this review, we encompass the fabrication of MXene-based polymeric nanocomposites, their structure-property relationship, and applications in the flexible sensor domain. Moreover, our discussion is not only limited to sensor design, their mechanism, and various modes of sensing platform, but also their future perspective and market throughout the world. With our article, we intend to fortify the bond between flexible matrices and MXenes thus promoting the swift advancement of flexible MXene-sensors for wearable technologies.

A cucurbit[6]uril-based carbon dot for recognizing metal ions and anions in solutions

In this paper, fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method using cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) and mandelic acid (MA). Compared with other carbon quantum dots, cucurbit[6]uril has the advantage that its original rigid macrocyclic skeleton was completely retained during the synthesis process. In addition, the performance of the Q[6]-CQDs were characterized by fluorescence and NMR spectroscopies, then the crystal structure of Q[6]-MA-[CdCl4]2- was determined by the single crystal X-ray crystallography. The Q[6]-CQDs showed good water solubility and stable optical property. Subsequently, using the obtained Q[6]-CQDs, a universal fluorescent probe for detecting and recognizing Fe3+, Ba2+, Al3+, I- and ClO- has been developed based on macrocyclic chemistry. Under ideal conditions, the detection limits were calculated to be 3.89 × 10-6 M, 2.58 × 10-5 M, 1.42 × 10-5 M, 6.84 × 10-6 M and 1.50 × 10-5 M.

Facile Bond Exchanging Strategy for Engineering Wet Adhesion and Antioxidant/Antibacterial Thin Layer over a Dynamic Hydrogel via the Carbon Dots Derived from Tannic Acid/ε-Polylysine

Adhesive hydrogels, playing an essential role in stretchable electronics, soft robotics, tissue engineering, and so forth, upon functioning often need to adhere to various substrates in wet conditions and simultaneously exhibit antibacterial/antioxidant properties while possessing the intrinsic stretchability and elasticity of the hydrogel network intact. Therefore, simple approaches to conveniently access adhesive hydrogels with multifunctional surfaces are being pursued. Herein, a facile strategy has been proposed to construct multifunctional adhesive hydrogels via surface engineering of a multifunctional carbon dot (CD)-decorated polymeric thin layer by dynamic bond exchange. By this strategy, a double cross-linked network hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAM) and oxidized dextran (ODA) was engineered with a unique dense layer over the Schiff base hydrogel matrix by aqueous solution immersion of PA-120, versatile CDs derived from tannic acid (TA) and ε-polylysine (PL). Without any additional agents, the PA-120 CDs with residual polyphenolic/catechol and amine moieties were incorporated into the surface structure of the hydrogel network by the combined action of the Schiff base and hydrogen bonds to form a dense surface layer that can exhibit high wet adhesive performance via the amine-polyphenol/catechol pair. The armor-like dense architecture also endowed hydrogels with considerably enhanced tensile/compression properties and excellent antioxidant/antibacterial abilities. Besides, the single-sided modified Janus hydrogel and completely surface-modified hydrogel can be flexibly developed through this approach. This strategy will provide new insights into the preparation and application of surface-modified hydrogels featuring multiple functions and tunable interfacial properties.

Carrageenan-based active and intelligent packaging films integrated with anthocyanin and TiO2-doped carbon dots derived from sweet potato peels

Carrageenan-based sustainable active and pH-dependent color-changing composite films were fabricated by blending anthocyanin extracted from sweet potato peel (SPA) with TiO2-doped carbon dots (Ti-CDs) prepared using the biowaste of SPA extraction. The SPA and Ti-CDs were compatible with the carrageenan matrix and were uniformly dispersed in the used polymer to form a homogeneous film with increased mechanical properties. The composite film added with SPA and 3 wt% Ti-CD showed 100 % UV protection, superb antioxidant (100 % DPPH and ABTS scavenging assay), and potent antibacterial activity (complete eradication of foodborne L.monocytogenes and E. coli strains after 3 h incubation). Additionally, the composite films showed distinguishable colorimetric responses to pH 7-12 buffers and volatile ammonia. The intelligent sensing ability of the composite film was assessed through shrimp freshness monitoring, and the film's hue shifted from pink (fresh shrimp) to yellow/brown (inedible shrimp) during storage. Shrimp packaging studies have shown that composite films retard the rate of food quality change during storage and are a good indicator of shrimp spoilage. Therefore, the designed film is expected to have high applicability as a chip, and quick on-site sensor that detects seafood quality in real-time, and a highly effective multifunctional film for better product quality preservation.

Perfluoropolyether-incorporated polyurethane with enhanced antibacterial and anti-adhesive activities for combating catheter-induced infection

To avoid the undesired bacterial attachment on polyurethane-based biomedical devices, we designed a class of novel perfluoropolyether-incorporated polyurethanes (PFPU) containing different contents of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) segments. After blending with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), a series of bifunctional PFPU/AgNPs composites with bactericidal and anti-adhesion abilities were obtained and correspondingly made into PFPU/AgNPs films (PFPU/Ag-F) using a simple solvent-casting method. Due to its highest hydrophobicity and suitable mechanical properties, PFPU8/Ag-F containing 8 mol% of PFPE content was chosen as the optimized one for the next antibacterial assessment. The PFPU8/Ag-F can effectively deactivate over 99.9% of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells at 106 CFU mL-1 within 30 min. Furthermore, the PFPU8/AgNPs composite was used as painting material to form a protective coating for the commercial polyurethane (PU) catheter. The as-prepared PFPU8/Ag coating exhibits high resistance to bacterial adhesion in a continuous-flow artificial urine model in an 8 day exposure. Therefore, it can be expected that the proposed PFPE-containing films and coatings can effectively prevent bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on catheters or other implants, thereby reducing the risk of postoperative catheter-induced infection.
