A Thiophene-Containing Conductive Metallopolymer Using an Fe(II) Bis(terpyridine) Core for Electrochromic Materials

Interfacial Self-Assembly of Organized Ultrathin Films of Tripodal Metal-Terpyridyl Coordination Polymers as Luminophores and Heterogeneous Catalysts for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Metal-directed interfacial self-assembly of well-defined coordination polymer (CP) ultrathin films can control the metal complex arrangement and distribution at the molecular level, providing a convenient route for the design and fabrication of novel opto-electrical devices and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we report the assembly of two series of CP multilayers with the transition-metal ions of Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Tb³⁺ as connectors and tripodal terpyridyl ligands of 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyTa) and 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyBen) as linkers at the air-water interface. The as-prepared Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films display strong luminescence, with the emission wavelength and relative intensity dependent on both the metal ions and linkers; among them, the Zn-TerPyTa and Zn-TerPyBen CPs give off the strongest luminescent emission centered at about 370 nm with an emission lifetime of approximately 0.2-0.3 ns. The Tb-TerPyTa CPs can give off emission at approximately 490, 546, 586, and 622 nm, attributed to the ⁵D₄ to ⁷F_3-6 electron transitions of typical Tb³⁺ ions. Finally, these CP LB films can act as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for the CO₂ reduction to selectively produce CO. The catalytic efficiency can be optimized by adjusting the experimental conditions (light sensitizer, electron donor, and water content) and CP composition (metal ion and ligand) with an excellent yield of up to 248.1 mmol g^-1. In particular, it is revealed that, under the same conditions, the catalytic efficiency of the Fe-TerPyTa CP LB film is nearly 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the other metalated complexes investigated in the homogeneous system. UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrated that the dual active sites of Fe-terpyridine and TerPyTa units contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity. This work provides an effective method to introduce the earth-abundant metal complexes into CP films to construct efficient noble-metal-free photocatalysts for the CO₂ reduction.

Photoelectrocatalytic Dioxygen Reduction Based on a Novel Thiophene-Functionalized Tricarbonylchloro(1,10-phenanthroline)rhenium(I)

A novel Re (I) complex of [Re(CO)3Cl(L)], {L = 2-([2,2’-bithiophen]-5-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-imidazo [4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline}, was synthesized, and its optical (UV–Visible absorption and emission spectroscopy), cyclovoltammetric and photoelectrochemical oxygen reduction properties were studied. The geometric and electronic properties were also investigated by density functional theory calculations. It was found that the ITO electrode coated with drop-casted [Re(CO)3Cl(L)] film exhibited cathodic photocurrent generation characteristics. The illuminated film exhibited a maximum cathodic photocurrent up to 30.4 μA/cm2 with an illumination intensity of 100 mW/cm2 white light at a bias potential of −0.4 V vs. SCE in O2-saturated electrolyte solution, which was reduced by 5.1-fold when thoroughly deoxygenated electrolyte solution was used, signaling that the electrode performed well on the photoelectrochemical oxygen reduction. The photo-electrocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production was proved with a maximum H2O2 concentration of 6.39 μM during 5 h of the photoelectrocatalytic process. This work would guide the construction of more efficient rhenium-based photo(electro)catalytic molecular systems for O2 sensing, hydrogen peroxide production and other types of photoelectrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Dual Lewis Acid- and Base-Responsive Terpyridine-Based Hydrogel: Programmable and Spatiotemporal Regulation of Fluorescence for Chemical-Based Information Security

A huge amount of data inundated in our daily life; there is an ever-increasing need to develop a new strategy of information encryption-decryption-erasing. Herein, a polymeric DCTpy/PAM hydrogel has been fabricated to store information via controllable Eu³⁺/Zn²⁺ ionoprinting for hierarchical and multidimensional information decryption. Eu³⁺ and Zn²⁺ have a competition and dynamic interaction toward DCTpy under NH₃ stimuli in the polymeric DCTpy/PAM hydrogel network. The Eu(III)/Zn(II)@DCTpy/PAM hydrogel exhibits light red fluorescence of Eu³⁺ due to the antenna effect. Upon the addition of NH₃, dissociation of the Eu³⁺-DCTpy complex takes place, and the Zn(II)/DCTpy/NH₃ complex is formed with both ICT (intramolecular charge-transfer) and PET (photo-induced electron-transfer) process characteristics that exhibits yellow emission color. Subsequently, HCl can quench the fluorescence of the resulting hydrogel. By integrating transparency, adhesiveness, and programmable stimuli responsiveness of the hydrogel blocks in to one system, complex, multistage, and time-controlled information storage-encryption-decryption-erasing in sequence with multidimensions is illustrated via the molecule diffusion method. This work provides a novel and representative strategy in fabricating information encryption-decryption-erasing materials with high capacity and complexity by a simple terpyridine-based hydrogel.

Metal-Terpyridine Assembled Functional Materials for Electrochromic, Catalytic and Environmental Applications

Molecular assembly induced by metal-terpyridine-based coordinative interactions has become an emergent research topic due to its ease of synthesis and diverse applications. This article highlights recent significant developments in the metal-terpyridine-based supramolecular architectures. At first, the design aspect of the molecular building blocks has been described, followed by elaboration on how the ligand backbone plays an important role for achieving different dimensionalities of the resulting assemblies which exhibit a wide range of potential applications. After that, we discussed different synthetic approaches for constructing these assemblies, and finally, we focused on their significant developments in three specific areas, viz., electrochromic materials, catalysis and a new application in wastewater treatment. In the field of electrochromic materials, these assemblies made important advancements in various aspects like sub-second switching time (<1 s), low switching voltage (<1 V), increased switching stability (>10000 cycles), tuning of multiple colors by using multimetallic systems, fabrication of charge storing electrochromic devices, utilizing and storing solar energy etc. Similarly, the catalysis field witnessed application of the metal-terpyridine assemblies in C-H monohalogenation, heterogeneous Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, photocatalysis, reduction of carbon dioxide, etc. Finally, the environmental application of these coordination assemblies includes capturing Cr(VI) from waste water efficiently with high capture capacity, good recyclability, wide pH independency etc.

Novel Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers with 1-Thioxophosphole Main-Chain Units and Remarkable Photoinduced Changes in Their Resonance Raman Spectra

New low-bandgap unimers, with the central thiophene-(1-thioxophosphole)-thiophene (TPT) ring sequence and 2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl (tpy) end groups connected to the central unit via conjugated linkers of different size, are prepared and assembled with Zn(II) and Fe(II) ions to metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs) that are studied regarding their properties. The most interesting feature of Zn-MSPs is the luminescence extended deep into the NIR region. Fe-MSPs not only show the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) manifested by the MLCT band (an expected feature) but also an as-yet-undescribed remarkable phenomenon: specific damping of the bands of the TPT sequence in the resonance Raman spectra taken from solid Fe-MSPs using the excitation to the MLCT band (532 nm). The damping is highly reversible at the low laser power of 0.1 mW but gradually becomes irreversible as the power reaches ca. 5 mW. The revealed phenomenon is not shown by the same Fe-MSPs in solutions, nor by Fe-MSPs containing no phosphole units. A hypothesis is proposed that explains this phenomenon and its dependence on the irradiation intensity as a result of the interplay of three factors: (i) enhancement of the MLCT process by excitation radiation, (ii) the electron-acceptor character of the 1-thioxophosphole ring, and (iii) morphological changes of the lattice and their dependence on the population of new structures in the lattice.

Impact of Counteranion on Reversible Spin-State Switching in a Series of Cobalt(II) Complexes Containing a Redox-Active Ethylenedioxythiophene-Based Terpyridine Ligand

The self-assembly of a redox-active ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-terpyridine-based tridentate ligand and cobalt(II) unit with different counteranions has led to a series of new cobalt(II) complexes [Co(L)₂](X)₂ (X = BF₄ (1), ClO₄ (2), and BPh₄ (3)) (L = 4'-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). The impact of various counteranions on stabilization and spin-state switching of the cobalt(II) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical studies. All three complexes 1-3 consisted of an isostructural dicationic distorted octahedral CoN₆ coordination environment offered by the two L ligands in a bis-meridional fashion and BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, and BPh₄^- as a counteranion, respectively. Complex 2 with ClO₄^- counteranion showed a reversible, gradual, and nearly complete spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1/2) and high-spin (HS) (S = 3/2) states, while an incomplete spin-state switching behavior was observed for complexes 1 (BF₄^-) and 3 (BPh₄^-) in the measured temperature range of 350-2 K. The non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the spin-state in 1-3. Additionally, complexes 1-3 also exhibited interesting redox-stimuli-based reversible paramagnetic HS cobalt(II) (S = 3/2) to diamagnetic LS cobalt(III) (S = 0) conversion, offering an alternate way to switch the magnetic properties.

Synthesis of Bis-Terpyridine-Based Metallopolymers and the Thermoelectric Properties of Their Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites

Although the organic and the conventional inorganic thermoelectric (TE) materials have been extensively developed in recent years, the number of cases involving conducting metallopolymers is still quite limited. In view of the versatile coordination capability of the terpyridine fraction and the electron-rich nature of the 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene moiety, a bis-terpyridine-featured ligand was designed, and a series of metallopolymers were then synthesized. Upon the addition of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), the TE properties of the resulting metallopolymer-SWCNT composite films were investigated. It was found that metal centres played an important role in affecting the morphology of the thin films, which was a key factor that determined the TE performances of the composites. Additionally, the energy levels of the metallopolymers were feasibly tuned by selecting different metal centres. With the combined effects of a uniform and condensed surface and an optimized band structure, the highest power factor was achieved by the Cu(II)-containing metallopolymer-SWCNT composite at the doping ratio of 75%, which reached 38.3 μW·m-1·K-2.

Linear-Organic-Polymer-Supported Iridium Complex as a Recyclable Auto-Tandem Catalyst for the Synthesis of Quinazolinones via Selective Hydration/Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling from o-Aminobenzonitriles

A linear-organic-polymer-supported iridium complex Cp*Ir@P4VP, which is designed and synthesized by the coordinative immobilization of [Cp*IrCl₂]₂ on poly(4-vinylpyridine), was proven to be an efficient heterogeneous autotandem catalyst for synthesizing quinazolinones via selective hydration/acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling from o-aminobenzonitriles. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst was recycled five times without an obvious decrease in the catalytic activity.

Ligand-Controlled Electrochromic Diversification with Multilayer Coated Metallosupramolecular Polymer Assemblies

Designing surface-confined molecular systems capable of expressing changes in functional properties as a result of slight variations in chemical structure under the influence of an external stimulus is of contemporary interest. In this context, we have designed three tetraterpyridine ligands with variations in their core architecture (phenyl vs tetraphenylethynyl vs bithiophene) to create spray-coated electrochromic assemblies of iron(II)-based metallosupramolecular polymer network films on transparent conducting oxide substrates. These assemblies exhibited molecular permeability and spectroelectrochemical properties that are in turn dictated by the ligand structure. Electrochromic films with high coloration efficiencies (up to 1050 cm²/C) and superior optical contrast (up to 76%) with a concomitant color-to-color redox transition were readily achieved. These functional switching elements were integrated into sandwich-type electrochromic cells (CE up to 641 cm²/C) that exhibited high contrast ratios of up to 56%, with attractive ON-OFF ratios, fast switching kinetics, and high operational stability. Every measurable spectroelectrochemical property of the films and devices is an associated function of the ligand structure that coordinates the same metal ion to different extents. While exhibiting a ligand-structure induced differential metal coordination leading to porosity and spectroelectrochemical diversification, these assemblies allow the creation of electrochromic patterns and images by a simple spray-coating technique.

Iron (II) Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers Based on Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene for Electrochromic Applications

Four new bis(tpy) unimers with different linkers between the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl central unit and terpyridine-4′-yl (tpy) end-groups: no linker (Tt), ethynediyl (TtE), 1,4-phenylene (TtPh) and 2,2′-bithophene-5,5′-diyl (TtB) are prepared, characterized, and assembled with Fe²⁺ ions to metallo-supramolecular polymers (Fe-MSPs). The Fe-MSP films prepared by spin-casting on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass are characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/vis spectroscopy and studied for their electrochromism and effect of the unimer structure on their electrochromic performance. Of the studied MSPs, Fe-Tt shows the highest optical contrast as well as coloration efficiency (CE = 641 cm² C⁻¹) and the fastest optical response. This makes it an excellent candidate for possible use in electrochromic devices.

Colorimetric properties and structural evolution of cathodic electrochromic WO3 thin films

Cathodic amorphous tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films have been deposited by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering and have been studied for their colorimetric and electrochromic properties. Those studies were carried out under two different potential cycling process: (i) switching mode (the response between coloration and bleaching in increasing potential steps) and (ii) modulation mode (the stepwise modulation to coloration with increasing potential and back to bleaching). Optical measurements, performed as a function of applied potential, showed excellent transmittance contrasts (∼80%) between colored and bleached states. The color stimuli and the changes that take place upon reversible switching or modulation were recorded based on the Commisson International de l’Éclairage (CIE) system. It was found that, under various potentials, significant changes occurred in the hue and saturation for WO3, as exhibited by the CIE 1931 xy chromaticity coordinates. As WO3 was reduced (W6+ + e– → W5+), a sharp decrease in luminance was observed. Excellent reversibility is demonstrated not only by colorimetric properties, but also by the corresponding intrinsic structures of the films, as investigated by µ-Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the WO3 films displayed a fast response time and good long-term cycling durability, which was attributed to their amorphous nature.

Synthesis and electropolymerization of N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) from an emissive imidazolium salt with a terthiophene backbone

The synthesis of an emissive terthiophene-based imidazolium iodide: 1,3-dimethyl-4,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-thienoimidazol-3-ium iodide (4), the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) preligand, and Pd and Pt-NHC complexes (5a, 5b) are reported. A related Pd-NHC complex (8) with a mono-thiophene backbone has also been synthesized. The solid-state structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compounds 4, 5a and 5b were characterized by absorption/emission spectroscopy and an emission-quench phenomenon of 5a was observed. The Pd complexes 5a and 8 were shown to catalyze Heck type C-C bond forming reactions. The compounds with terthiophene backbones (4, 5a, 5b) were electropolymerized onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass electrodes to yield thin films of conducting metallopolymers (CMPs) (P1-3). UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry data of P1-3 showed reversible color changes upon oxidation due to the generation of charge carrier species along the polythiophene backbones.

Metallopolymers for advanced sustainable applications

Since the development of metallopolymers, there has been tremendous interest in the applications of this type of materials. The interest in these materials stems from their potential use in industry as catalysts, biomedical agents in healthcare, energy storage and production as well as climate change mitigation. The past two decades have clearly shown exponential growth in the development of many new classes of metallopolymers that address these issues. Today, metallopolymers are considered to be at the forefront for discovering new and sustainable heterogeneous catalysts, therapeutics for drug-resistant diseases, energy storage and photovoltaics, molecular barometers and thermometers, as well as carbon dioxide sequesters. The focus of this review is to highlight the advances in design of metallopolymers with specific sustainable applications.

A 3D electropolymerized thin film based on a thiophene-functionalized Ru(ii) complex: electrochemical and photoelectrochemical insights

A 3D electropolymerized Ru(ii) complex film exhibited a rapid redox reaction and an oxygen reduction enhanced photocurrent which increased by 1.5 fold to 2.3 μA cm⁻².

Importance of Binding Affinity for the Activity of a Metallodendritic Chemical Nuclease

A family of bis(2-pyridyl)amino-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrimer Cu complexes was prepared, and their chemical nuclease activities and binding affinity (K_b) levels for DNA plasmid were investigated. The K_b values of the G2 to G6 apodendrimers for DNA plasmid were found to be 7.4, 23, 48, 70, and 280 µM⁻¹, respectively, using ethidium bromide (EtBr) displacement experiments. The chemical nuclease activities of the corresponding complexes were determined by gel electrophoresis, and a clear positive dendritic effect was observed. Further analysis indicated a linear correlation between the K_b values of the G2 to G5 apodendrimers and the nuclease activity of the corresponding complexes. This observation indicated the importance of substrate binding affinity for macromolecular nuclease activity. In addition, an experiment using 3′-(p-hydroxyphenyl) fluorescein suggested that hydroxyl radicals formed under the tested conditions. Subsequently performed inhibition studies indicated that the hydroxyl radical was the active species responsible for the plasmid cleavage.

Bridged cyclometalated diruthenium complexes for fundamental electron transfer studies and multi-stage redox switching

Four bridged cyclometalated diruthenium systems are highlighted in this Frontier article, including strongly-coupled diruthenium complexes with a short phen-1,4-diyl or a planar pyren-2,7-diyl bridge, redox asymmetric diruthenium complexes characterized by different terminal ligands on the two ends, diruthenium complexes with a urea bridge that allows modulating the degree of electronic coupling, and those with a redox-active amine bridge with varying electronic structures. These complexes posess redox couples with low potentials and intense intervalence charge transfer absorptions in the near-infrared region in the one-electron-oxidized mixed-valent state. They are appealing not only for providing a platform for fundamental electron transfer studies but also as molecular materials with multi-stage redox switching properties.

Sub-phthalocyanine-incorporated Fe(ii) metallo-supramolecular polymer exhibiting blue-to-transmissive electrochromic transition with high transmittance and coloration efficiency

The preparation of a new Fe(ii) metallo-supramolecular polymer (poly-subPc-Fe) constructed from a terpyridine-functionalized sub-phthalocyanine with axially substituted polyisobutylene is presented.

Facile Solution Synthesis of Tungsten Trioxide Doped with Nanocrystalline Molybdenum Trioxide for Electrochromic Devices

A facile, highly efficient approach to obtain molybdenum trioxide (MoO3)-doped tungsten trioxide (WO3) is reported. An annealing process was used to transform ammonium tetrathiotungstate [(NH4)2WS4] to WO3 in the presence of oxygen. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate [(NH4)2MoS4] was used as a dopant to improve the film for use in an electrochromic (EC) cell. (NH4)2MoS4 at different concentrations (10, 20, 30, and 40 mM) was added to the (NH4)2WS4 precursor by sonication and the samples were annealed at 500 °C in air. Raman, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirmed that the (NH4)2WS4 precursor decomposed to WO3 and the (NH4)2MoS4-(NH4)2WS4 precursor was transformed to MoO3-doped WO3 after annealing at 500 °C. It is shown that the MoO3-doped WO3 film is more uniform and porous than pure WO3, confirming the doping quality and the privileges of the proposed method. The optimal MoO3-doped WO3 used as an EC layer exhibited a high coloration efficiency of 128.1 cm2/C, which is larger than that of pure WO3 (74.5 cm2/C). Therefore, MoO3-doped WO3 synthesized by the reported method is a promising candidate for high-efficiency and low-cost smart windows.

Reversible Bond/Cation-Coupled Electron Transfer on Phenylenediamine-Based Rhodamine B and Its Application on Electrochromism

A biomimetic system on reversible bond-coupled electron transfer (BCET) has been proposed and investigated in a switchable Rh-N molecule with redox active subunits. We discover that energy barrier of C-N bond breaking is reduced dramatically to less than 1/7 (from 40.4 to 5.5 kcal/mol), and 1/3 of the oxidation potential is simultaneously lowered (from 0.67 to 0.43 V) with the oxidation of Rh-N. The concept, cation-coupled electron transfer (CCET), is highly recommended by analyzing existing proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) and metal coupled electron transfer (MCET) along with aforementioned BCET, which have same characteristic of transferring positive charges, such as proton, metal ion, and organic cation. Molecular switch can be controlled directly by electricity through BCET process. Solid electrochromic device was fabricated with extremely high coloration efficiency (720 cm²/C), great reversibility (no degradation for 600 cycles), and quick respond time (30 ms).
