Abstract
Water is the source of life and civilization, but water icing causes catastrophic damage to human life and diverse industrial processes. Currently, superhydrophobic surfaces (inspired by the lotus effect) aided anti-icing attracts intensive attention due to their energy-free property. Here, recent advances in anti-icing by design and functionalization of superhydrophobic surfaces are reviewed. The mechanisms and advantages of conventional, macrostructured, and photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces are introduced in turn. Conventional superhydrophobic surfaces, as well as macrostructured ones, easily lose the icephobic property under extreme conditions, while photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces strongly rely on solar illumination. To address the above issues, a potentially smart strategy is found by developing macrostructured photothermal storage superhydrophobic (MPSS) surfaces, which integrate the functions of macrostructured superhydrophobic materials, photothermal materials, and phase change materials (PCMs), and are expected to achieve all-day anti-icing in various fields. Finally, the latest achievements in developing MPSS surfaces, showcasing their immense potential, are highlighted. Besides, the perspectives on the future development of MPSS surfaces are provided and the problems that need to be solved in their practical applications are proposed.

Abstract
The anti-icing and drag-reduction properties of diverse microstructured surfaces have undergone extensive study over the past decade. Nonetheless, tough environments enforce stringent demands on the composite characteristics of superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS). In this study, fresh composite structures were fabricated on a metal substrate by nanosecond laser machining technology, drawing inspiration from the hardy plant Iridaceae. The prepared sample surface mainly consists of a periodic microrhombus array and irregular nanosheets. To comprehensively investigate the effect of its special structure on surface properties, three surfaces with different sizes of rhombic structures were used for comparative analysis, and the results show that the SH-S2 sample is optimal. This can significantly delay the freezing time by an impressive 1404 s at -10 °C while revealing the sample surface anti-icing strategy. In addition, the rheological experiments determined over 300 μm of slip length for the SH-S2 sample, and the drag reduction rate of the surface reaches nearly 40%, which is well aligned with the results of the delayed icing experiments. Finally, the mechanical durability of the SH-S2 surface was investigated through scratch damage, sandpaper abrasion, reparability trials, and icing and melting cycle tests. This research presents a new approach and methodology for the application of SHS on polar ship surfaces.

Abstract
Materials with low ice adhesion and long-lasting anti-icing properties remain an ongoing challenge in ultralow temperature environments (≤-30 °C). This study presents a gel material consisting of a polymer matrix (copolymer of polyurethane and acrylamide) and an anti-icing agent, ethylene glycol (EG), designed for anti-icing applications at ultralow temperatures. The surface shows a prolonged droplet freezing delay of ca. 322 s at -30 °C and frost resistance properties. It also exhibits an ice adhesion strength of 1.1 kPa at -10 °C and 39.8 kPa at -50 °C, resulting from the interaction between EG and water molecules that hinders the crystallization of ice as well as the significant mismatch between elastic gel and ice. In addition, the gel surface exhibits favorable anti-icing durability, with an ice adhesion strength below 20.0 kPa after 25 icing/deicing cycles and mechanical scratch tests. The gel demonstrates remarkable thermal durability, achieved through the H-bonds between the EG and polymer matrix. The H-bonds further enhance the anti-icing performance, thereby remarkably decreasing EG depletion and improving anti-icing durability. Overall, these properties suggest the potential application of this gel material in harsh environments including polar regions.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The solid fraction of the substrate is expected to influence the bouncing behavior of an impinging droplet, thereby affecting spreading and contact time. Hence, it should be possible to alter the velocity and pressure distribution of impacting droplet, and also affect the impact velocity for droplet penetration right upon impact. SIMULATIONS We systematically investigate the impact dynamics of water droplets on pillared hydrophobic surfaces with different solid fractions using phase-field simulations. The velocity and pressure distributions of impacting droplets on pillared hydrophobic surfaces with varied Weber numbers and solid fractions are studied. In addition, the influences of the solid fraction on the bouncing behaviors of the impinging droplet, such as the maximum wetting spreading, the maximum impacting depth, and the contact time, are also investigated to further understand the impact event. FINDINGS We show that a three-peak pressure profile appears on the top of the pillared hydrophobic surface during droplet impact by varying the solid fraction of the surface. The first peak is generated by the impact of the droplet itself, while the second peak arises from the droplet recoil impact associated with the dynamic properties of the jet. Moreover, we identify a hitherto unknown third pressure peak related to the hydrodynamic singularity that emerges due to the convergence of the fluid during the droplet rebound. This solid fraction-dependent impacting behavior reveals the intricate interplay between droplet dynamics and the underlying surface characteristics, providing valuable insights into the design and optimization of micro/nano structured hydrophobic surfaces for various applications.

Abstract
Superhydrophobicity (SHP) is an incredible phenomenon of extreme water repellency of surfaces ubiquitous in nature (E.g. lotus leaves, butterfly wings, taro leaves, mosquito eyes, water-strider legs, etc). Historically, surface exhibiting water contact angle (WCA) > 150° and contact angle hysteresis <10° is considered as SHP. The SHP surfaces garnered considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, viscous drag reduction, anti-icing, etc. As corrosion and marine biofouling are global problems, there has been focused efforts in combating these issues using innovative environmentally friendly coatings designs taking cues from natural SHP surfaces. Over the last two decades, though significant progress has been made on the fabrication of various SHP surfaces, the practical adaptation of these surfaces for various applications is hampered, mainly because of the high cost, non-scalability, lack of simplicity, non-adaptability for a wide range of substrates, poor mechanical robustness and chemical inertness. Despite the extensive research, the exact mechanism of corrosion/anti-fouling of such coatings also remains elusive. The current focus of research in recent years has been on the development of facile, eco-friendly, cost-effective, mechanically robust chemically inert, and scalable methods to prepare durable SHP coating on a variety of surfaces. Although there are some general reviews on SHP surfaces, there is no comprehensive review focusing on SHP on metallic and alloy surfaces with corrosion-resistant and antifouling properties. This review is aimed at filling this gap. This review provides a pedagogical description with the necessary background, key concepts, genesis, classical models of superhydrophobicity, rational design of SHP, coatings characterization, testing approaches, mechanisms, and novel fabrication approaches currently being explored for anticorrosion and antifouling, both from a fundamental and practical perspective. The review also provides a summary of important experimental studies with key findings, and detailed descriptions of the evaluation of surface morphologies, chemical properties, mechanical, chemical, corrosion, and antifouling properties. The recent developments in the fabrication of SHP -Cr-Mo steel, Ti, and Al are presented, along with the latest understanding of the mechanism of anticorrosion and antifouling properties of the coating also discussed. In addition, different promising applications of SHP surfaces in diverse disciplines are discussed. The last part of the review highlights the challenges and future directions. The review is an ideal material for researchers practicing in the field of coatings and also serves as an excellent reference for freshers who intend to begin research on this topic.

Abstract
Ice formation and accumulation on surfaces has a negative impact in many different sectors and can even represent a potential danger. In this review, the latest advances and trends in icephobic coatings focusing on the importance of their durability are discussed, in an attempt to pave the roadmap from the lab to engineering applications. An icephobic material is expected to lower the ice adhesion strength, delay freezing time or temperature, promote the bouncing of a supercooled drop at subzero temperatures and/or reduce the ice accretion rate. To better understand what is more important for specific icing conditions, the different types of ice that can be formed in nature are summarized. Similarly, the alternative methods to evaluate the durability are reviewed, as this is key to properly selecting the method and parameters to ensure the coating is durable enough for a given application. Finally, the different types of icephobic surfaces available to date are considered, highlighting the strategies to enhance their durability, as this is the factor limiting the commercial applicability of icephobic coatings.

Abstract
Sufficient efforts have been put into the design of anti-icing materials to eliminate the icing hazard. Among the currently approved anti-icing concepts, hydrophilic/hydrophobic hybrid anti-icing materials inspired by antifreeze proteins show excellent properties in inhibiting ice nucleation, inhibiting ice crystal growth, and reducing ice adhesion. However, it is still a great challenge to accurately regulate the hydrophilic and hydrophobic hybrid components of the coating surface to clarify the synergistic mechanism. This work proposes a strain-manipulated surface modification strategy, and an anti-icing coating with adjustable hydrophilic/hydrophobic hybrid components prepared by combining chemical vapor deposition and siloxane chemistry is obtained. According to the ice resistance experiment at -15 °C, the performance of anti-icing is closely related to the proportion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic hybrids. The icing delay time and ice adhesion strength of the material with the optimal hydrophilic/hydrophobic components are 280 s and 18.6 kPa, respectively. These unique properties can be attributed to the synergistic effect of hydrophilic and hydrophobic structures on the regulation of interfacial water.

Abstract
The corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of fixed orthodontic devices are insufficient in the complex oral cavity, which delays tooth movement and causes enamel demineralization. To overcome the challenges, this research constructs a series of polydopamine-graphene oxide (PDA-GO) nanocoatings on representative NiTi archwires via self-assembly. The morphology, chemical structure, and multifunctional properties of coatings showed tunability dependent on the PDA/GO ratio. Optimized PDA-GO coatings with uniform and dense characteristics prolonged the diffusion path for the corrosive medium and reduced Ni dissolution in NiTi alloys. Meanwhile, the applied coatings endowed NiTi alloys with antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans due to the surface structures and inherent properties of PDA-GO. In vitro cytotoxicity tests further verified their good biocompatibility. This bio-inspired nanocomposite coating provides a practical reference for modification of dental metal surfaces to better behave in the intraoral environment.

Abstract
The study aimed to test the durability of coatings under natural conditions. The present study focused on the changes in wettability and additional properties of the coatings under natural conditions. The specimens were subjected to outdoor exposure and additionally immersed in the pond. Impregnating porous anodized aluminum is a popular production method for hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces. However, prolonged exposure of such coatings to natural conditions causes leaching of the impregnate and, thus, the loss of hydrophobic properties. After the loss of hydrophobic properties, all kinds of impurities and fouling adhere better to the porous structure. Additionally, deterioration of anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties was observed. Finally, the self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties were comparable or even worse to those of the hydrophilic coating. In the case of superhydrophobic specimens, during outdoor exposure there was no loss of superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning and anti-corrosion properties. Still, despite this, the icing delay time dropped. During outdoor exposure, the structure, which initially had anti-icing properties, may degrade. Nevertheless, the hierarchical structure responsible for the superhydrophobic effect can still be preserved. The superhydrophobic coating initially had the best anti-fouling properties. However, the coating was also gradually losing its superhydrophobic properties during water immersion.

Abstract
Undesired ice/frost formation and accretion often occur on food freezing facility surfaces, lowering freezing efficiency. In the current study, two slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were fabricated by spraying hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and stearic acid (SA)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) suspensions, separately onto aluminum (Al) substrates coated with epoxy resin to obtain two superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS), and then infusing food-safe silicone and camellia seed oils into the SHS, respectively, achieving anti-frosting/icing performance. In comparison with bare Al, SLIPS not only exhibited excellent frost resistance and defrost properties but also showed ice adhesion strength much lower than that of SHS. In addition, pork and potato were frozen on SLIPS, showing an extremely low adhesion strength of <10 kPa, and after 10 icing/deicing cycles, the final ice adhesion strength of 29.07 kPa was still much lower than that of SHS (112.13 kPa). Therefore, the SLIPS showed great potential for developing into robust anti-icing/frosting materials for the freezing industry.

Abstract
Anti-icing coatings on outdoor infrastructures and transportations inevitably suffer from surface injuries, especially in extreme weather events (e.g., freezing weather or acid rain). The coating surface damage can result in anti-icing performance loss or even icing promotion. The development of anti-icing coatings that enables self-healing in extreme conditions is highly desired but still challenging. Herein, an extreme-environment-resistant self-healing anti-icing coating is developed by integrating fluorinated graphene (FG) into a supramolecular polymeric matrix. The coating exhibits both anti-icing and deicing performance (ice nucleation temperature is ≈-30.3 °C; ice shear strength is ≈48.7 kPa), mainly attributable to the hydrophobic FG and silicone-based supramolecular material. Notably, owing to the crosslinking polymeric network with various dynamic bonds, this coating can sustain anti-icing/deicing performance after autonomous self-healing under harsh conditions including low temperature (-20 °C), strong acid (pH = 0), and strong alkali (pH = 14) environments. This coating paves the way to meet the anti-icing demand in open air, especially for the infrastructures in polar regions or acid/alkali environments.

Abstract
Ice build-up on solid surfaces causes significant economic losses for a range of industries. One solution to this problem is the development of coatings with low ice adhesion strength. Amphiphilic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-based surfaces have been recently reported for antifogging/antifrosting applications. However, they have possible anti-icing properties through lowering the ice adhesion strength that have yet to be reported. Herein, we designed well-defined triblock copolymers composed of a polydimethylsiloxane component coupled with PIL segments of poly([2 (methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC), which were subsequently UV-cured with an oligo(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (OEGDMA) cross-linker. The structure-property relationships of the resultant semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (SIPNs) were investigated by varying the counterion (i.e., trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI-)) and the content of the PIL segments and cross-linker. An ice adhesion strength as low as 13.3 ± 8.6 kPa was observed for the coating containing 12.5 wt % of PMETAC segment and 5 wt % of OEGDMA, which is one of the lowest values reported so far for the amphiphilic coatings. Characterization of the coatings in terms of surface features, wettability, and hydration states have enabled the elucidation of different deicing mechanisms. Self-lubrication due to the existence of nonfreezable bound water led to the obtained low ice adhesion strength. This work offers a new approach for the exploration of PIL-based icephobic coatings for practical applications.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic materials have become a feasible choice to solve related difficult problems because of their excellent anti-icing, anti-corrosion, and self-cleaning characteristics. In this work, a superhydrophobic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/SiO2 coating is prepared using an efficient, fluorine-free method for the anti-icing application of transmission line insulators and other similar material surfaces. The water contact angle (WCA) of the coating is 161°, and the slide angle (SA) is less than 1°. The coating maintains good hydrophobicity after mechanical durability tests. In the anti-icing performance tests, the start freezing time of a single droplet is delayed by 1366 s, and when the surface is not coated, the ice amount is more than twice that with the coating. Therefore, this work provides a straightforward and promising solution to solving high-cost and low-efficiency difficulties in the anti-icing problem of transmission line insulators and other similar material surfaces.

Abstract
Wind-dispersal of seeds is a remarkable strategy in nature, enlightening the construction of microfliers for environmental monitoring. However, the flight of these microfliers is greatly affected by climatic conditions, especially in rainy days, they suffer serious raindrop impact. Here, a hierarchical superhydrophobic surface is fabricated and a novel strategy is demonstrated that the superhydrophobic coating can enhance spreading while reduce contact time and impact force of raindrops, all of which are beneficial for the rotating microfliers. When the surface rotating speed exceeds a critical value, the effect of centrifugal force becomes considerable so that the droplet spreading is enhanced. The rotating superhydrophobic surface can rotate an impacting droplet by the tangential drag force from the air boundary layer, and the rotation of the droplet generates a negative pressure zone inside it, reducing the contact time by more than 30%. The impact force by the droplet on the rotating superhydrophobic surface also has a remarkable reduction of 53% compared to that on unprocessed hydrophilic surfaces, which helps maintain the flight stability of the microfliers. This work pioneers in revealing the droplet impact effect on rotating microflier surfaces and demonstrates the effectiveness of protecting microfliers with superhydrophobic coatings, which shall guide the manufacture and flight of microfliers in rainy conditions.

Abstract
The accumulation of ice may cause serious safety problems in numerous fields. A photothermal superhydrophobic surface is considered to be useful for preventing ice formation because of its environmentally friendly, energy-saving, and excellent anti-icing/de-icing properties. However, it easily fails to work in the absence of sunlight. To improve its anti-icing property without sunlight irradiation, a multifunctional photothermal phase-change superhydrophobic film (MPPSF) consisting of phase-change microcapsules (PCMs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated using a facile spraying method. Benefitting from the excellent light-thermal conversion effect of CNTs, the surface temperature could increase from -20 to 130.1 °C within 180 s under 808 nm near-infrared laser irradiation of 1 W/cm2, thus realizing high-efficiency de-icing. Meanwhile, a portion of the light-thermal energy was stored in the MPPSF because of the phase change of the PCMs. Without sunlight irradiation, the latent heat of the PCMs was released when the external temperature approached the phase-transition temperature. The synergistic effects of the phase-transition latent heat release and superhydrophobicity allowed the MPPSF to effectively hinder the formation of ice for 10.1 min at -20 °C. Therefore, this MPPSF with outstanding anti-icing and de-icing performances is expected to achieve ice prevention and removal in all-days.

Abstract
The need for improved anti-icing surfaces is the demand of the time and closely related to many important aspects of our lives as surface icing threatens not only industrial production but also human safety. Freezing on a cold surface is usually a heterogeneous nucleation process induced by the substrate. Creating an anti-icing surface is mainly achieved by changing surface morphology and chemistry to regulate the interaction between the surface and the water/ice to inhibit freezing on the surface. In this paper, recent research progress in the creation of biomimetic anti-icing surfaces is reviewed. Firstly, basic strategies of bionic anti-icing are introduced, and then bionic anti-icing surface strategies are reviewed according to four aspects: the process of ice formation, including condensate self-removing, inhibiting ice nucleation, reducing ice adhesion, and melting accumulated ice on the surface. The remaining challenges and the direction of future development of biomimetic anti-icing surfaces are also discussed.

Abstract
Anti-/de-icing of glass surfaces is of great importance in present daily life. The long-standing challenge in this field is largely due to the lack of stable multifunctional coatings that can be conveniently and economically constructed on the glass surface, and more importantly, are capable of retaining the original transparency of glass ranging from the visible to the near infrared spectrum. Herein, a direct spraying sol method on the glass surface to prepare a highly transparent and photothermal composite coating is reported. Such multifunctional coating of Cu7S4 nanoparticles/organo-silicone sols has displayed a good photothermal conversion property and hydrophobic property and therefore yields excellent anti-icing and self-melting ice properties. The condensation time of water droplets can be extended to 86 s even at -10 °C, which is 3.42 times delayed relative to ordinary blank glass. And the adhesion strength of ice is largely reduced to 72 KPa, which is as low as ∼1/3 that of ordinary glass. Meanwhile, the subcooling of adhering droplets is reduced to -12 °C under one solar illumination condition and exhibits a rapid de-icing capability. More impressively, the prepared functional coating glass shows an outstanding transmittance of more than 75% in the visible region, while it is over the minimum glass transmittance limit allowed by Safety Standards for Glass (GB9656-2016, China). In addition, the multifunctional photothermal glass coating exhibits good physical/chemical stability, which facilitates the long-term application of the coating in different environments.

Abstract
In the winter, icing on solid surfaces is a typical occurrence that may create a slew of hassles and even tragedies. Anti-icing surfaces are one of the effective solutions for this kind of problem. The roughness of a superhydrophobic surface traps air and weakens the contact between the solid surface and liquid water, allowing water droplets to be removed before freezing. At present, the conventional anti-icing methods including mechanical or thermal technology are not only surface structure unfriendly but also have the obsessions of low efficiency, high energy consumption and high manufacturing costs. Hence, developing a way to remove ice by just modifying the surface shape or chemical composition with a low surface energy is extremely desirable. Numerous attempts have been made to investigate the evolution of ice nucleation and icing on superhydrophobic surfaces under the direction of the ice nucleation hypothesis. In this paper, the research progress of ice nucleation in recent years is reviewed from theoretical and application. The icephobic surfaces are described using the wettability and classical nucleation theories. The benefits and drawbacks of anti-icing superhydrophobic surface are summarized, as well as deicing methods. Finally, several applications of ice phobic materials are illustrated, and some problems and challenges in the research field are discussed. We believed that this review will be useful in guiding future water freezing initiatives.

Abstract
Superhydrophobicity and icephobicity are governed by surface chemistry and surface structure. These two features signify a potential advance in surface engineering and have recently garnered significant attention from the research community. This review aims to simulate further research in the development of superhydrophobic and icephobic surfaces in order to achieve their wide-spread adoption in practical applications. The review begins by establishing the fundamentals of the wetting phenomenon and wettability parameters. This is followed by the recent advances in modeling and simulations of the response of superhydrophobic surfaces to static and dynamic droplets contact and impingement, respectively. In view of their versatility and multifunctionality, a special attention is given to the development of these surfaces using nanocomposites. Furthermore, the review considers advances in icephobicity, its comprehensive characterization and its relation to superhydrophobicity. The review also includes the importance of the use of superhydrophobic surface to combat viral and bacterial contamination that exist in fomites.

Abstract
Solar anti-/deicing can solve icing problems by converting sunlight into heat. One of the biggest problems, which has long been plaguing the design of solar anti-/deicing surfaces, is that photothermal materials are always lightproof and appear black, because of the mutual exclusiveness between generating heat and retaining transparency. Herein, a highly transparent and scalable solar anti-/deicing surface is reported, which enables the coated glass to exhibit high transparency (>77% transmittance at 550 nm) and meanwhile causes a >30 °C surface temperature increase relative to the ambient environment under 1.0 sun illumination. Such a transparent anti-/deicing surface can be fabricated onto a large class of substrates (e.g., glass, ceramics, metals, plastics), by applying a solid omniphobic slippery coating onto layer-by-layer-assembled ultrathin MXene multilayers. Hence, the surface possesses a self-cleaning ability to shed waterborne and oil-based liquids thanks to residue-free slipping motion. Passive anti-icing and active deicing capabilities are, respectively, obtained on the solar thermal surface, which effectively prevents water from freezing and simultaneously melts pre-formed ice and thick frost. The self-cleaning effect enables residue-free removal of unfrozen water and interfacially melted ice/frost to boost the anti-/deicing efficiency. Importantly, the surface is capable of self-healing under illumination to repair physical damage and chemical degradation.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces have great potential for self-cleaning, anti-icing, and drag-reducing because of their water repellency property. However, their super-hydrophobicity is destroyed under mechanical abrasion due to the vulnerability of the delicate surface textures. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to create a robust superhydrophobic surface using MXene and fluoridated silica as functional fillers in epoxy resin. The fluoridated silica produces low surface energy, MXene serves as a wear-resistant phase and epoxy resin is the binding matrix. The composite coating demonstrates a self-cleaning effect to remove particles from the superhydrophobic surface by rolling water droplets. Moreover, the coating exhibits excellent mechanical durability by standing abrasion to maintain super-hydrophobicity. The superhydrophobic composite coating has the advantages of low cost and feasibility and has the potential for expandable industrial promotion.

Abstract
The accumulation of ice will reduce the performance of the base material and lead to all kinds of damage, even a threat to people's life safety. Recent increasing studies suggest that superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) originating from nature can remove impacting and condensing droplets from the surface before freezing to subzero temperatures, and it can be seen that hydrophobic/SH coating has good freezing cold resistance. But such anti-icing performances and developments in practical applications are restricted by various factors. In this paper, the mechanism and process of surface icing phenomenon are introduced, as well as how to prevent surface icing on SHS. The development of SH materials in the aspect of anti-icing in recent years is described, and the existing problems in the aspect of anti-icing are analyzed, hoping to provide new research ideas and methods for the research of anti-icing materials.

Abstract
Ice accretion can lead to severe consequences in daily life and sometimes catastrophic events. To mitigate the hazard of icing, passive icephobic surfaces have drawn widespread attentions because of their abilities in repelling incoming water droplets, suppressing ice nucleation and/or lowering ice adhesion strength. As time elapses and temperature lowers sufficiently, ice accretion becomes inevitable, and a realistic roadmap to surface icephobicity for various outdoor anti-icing applications is to live with ice but with the lowest ice adhesion strength. In this review, surfaces with icephobicity are critically categorized into smooth surfaces, textured surfaces, slippery surfaces and sub-surface textured surfaces, and discussed in terms of theoretical limit, current status and perspectives. Particular attention is paid to multiple passive anti-icing strategies combined approaches as proposed on the basis of icephobic surfaces. Correlating the current strategies with one another will promote understanding of the key parameters in lowering ice adhesion strength. Finally, we provide remarks on the rational design of state-of-the-art icephobic surfaces with low ice adhesion strength.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic coatings have tremendous potential for protecting porous structures from corrosion. However, the weak adhesion and poor abrasion resistance have long been challenges for their real-life applications. Inspired by tree roots, we prepared a robust superhydrophobic coating by spraying fluorinated nanodiamonds (FNDs) on a permeable epoxy coating. The epoxy can not only coat the surface but also permeate deeply inside a porous substrate and consolidate in situ as tree roots in soil. Thus, the structure is thoroughly reinforced where the pull-off strength reaches 9.4 MPa for concrete. On the other hand, the surface is covered with immobilized FNDs, forming a superhydrophobic surface. Thanks to the ultra-hard FNDs, the coating surface has high abrasion resistance and its superhydrophobicity holds even after 100 abrasion cycles. Moreover, it exhibits self-cleaning, anti-icing, and anticorrosion performance. It is promising in protecting various porous structures such as concrete, wood, and untreated corroded steel.

Abstract
Ice formation on the surface of outdoor equipment brings significant inconvenience to human life and production. Superhydrophobic materials with the micro-nanostructure are considered to be effective anti-icing materials. However, repeated icing and deicing processes will destroy the structure and lose anti-icing properties. Herein, low-cost, durable, high-efficiency photothermal superhydrophobic materials were prepared by electrochemical deposition and silanization treatment methods. Combined with the black-body property of carbon materials and the micro-nano hierarchical structure, the as-prepared material has excellent photothermal and superhydrophobic properties. The surface temperature can rise to 90 °C, and the freezing droplets can melt in 100 s under 100 mW/cm2 of sunlight illumination. The superhydrophobic property endows the material with excellent anti-icing performance, and the icing delay time is as long as 3600 s. The melted water droplet can quickly roll off due to the low adhesion of the superhydrophobic surface, which avoids the refreezing of the melted droplet and enhances the photothermal conversion performance. We innovatively use the elemental tracer method to understand the melted water droplet roll off mechanism on inclined surfaces. In addition, the heat transfer model of anti-icing and photothermal deicing processes are established to confirm that the heat required for melting ice during the deicing process is mainly generated by photothermal materials. Finally, the feasibility of practical application of the material was verified by the anti-icing/deicing experiment of a wind turbine blade and ice/frost layer melting experiment. It concludes that the superior anti-icing and deicing properties are realized using the high photothermal conversion and excellent superhydrophobic properties of the prepared photothermal superhydrophobic materials. This study provides a perspective for constructing micro-nano hierarchical structures on the surface and combining them with the abundant solar energy in nature to develop photothermal anti-icing materials for practical application.

Abstract
The accumulation of ice and contaminants on the surface of composite insulators will cause high energy consumption or even major hazards to power systems. In this work, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone rubber was modified by surface micropatterning and material compositing. Highly crosslinked poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol) (PZS) was used to directly coat ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The obtained core-shell Fe3O4@PZS microspheres were loaded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to get CNTs/Fe3O4@PZS as the photothermal magnetic filler. The PDMS/CNTs/Fe3O4@PZS surfaces with micronscale truncated cones were prepared via a combined method of compression molding and magnetic attraction. The 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane-coated template and magnetic field can increase the height of the microstructure to ∼76 μm and maintain the contact angle of microstructured PDMS/CNTs/Fe3O4@PZS surfaces at a high level (∼152°). Compared with the flat PDMS surface, the micronscale truncated cones extend the freezing time from 4.5 to 11.5 min and also undermine the ice adhesion strength from ∼25 to ∼17 kPa for the microstructured PDMS/CNTs/Fe3O4@PZS surface. The temperature of the PDMS/CNTs/Fe3O4@PZS surface molded with magnetic attraction increases linearly with time and the internal magnetic fillers and achieves 280 °C in 10 s. The efficiency of temperature rise is increased by ∼46%, and hence the entire frozen water droplet can melt within 20 s. The strategy combining active deicing with passive anti-icing undoubtedly promotes the development of high efficiency anti-icing materials and can be applied on insulators to prevent icing flashover.

Abstract
Silanization processes with perfluoroalkyl silanes have been demonstrated to be effective in developing advanced materials with many functional properties, including hydrophobicity, water repellency, and self-cleaning properties. However, practical industrial applications of perfluoroalkyl silanes are limited by their extremely high cost. On the basis of our recent work on photoredox catalysis for amidation with perfluoroalkyl iodides, its application for surface chemical modification on filter paper, as an illustrative example, has been developed and evaluated. Before photocatalytic amidation, the surface is functionalized with amine functional groups by silanization with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine. All chemically modified surfaces have been fully characterized by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and three-dimensional (3D) profiling to confirm the successful silanization and photocatalytic amidation. After surface modification of the filter papers with perfluoroalkanamide, they show high water repellency and hydrophobicity with contact angles over 120°. These filter papers possess high wetting selectivity, which can be used to effectively separate the organic and aqueous biphasic mixtures. The perfluoroalkanamide-modified filter papers can be used for separating organic/aqueous biphasic mixtures over many cycles without lowering the separating efficiency, indicating their reusability and excellent durability.

Abstract
Fabrication of superhydrophobic films with large and sensitive deformed actuations driven by light stimuli for the emerging application fields such as biomimetic devices, artificial muscles, soft robotics, electric switches, and water-droplet manipulation remains challenging. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to fabricate a light stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic film (LSSF) by integrating a bottom carbon nanotube/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (CNT/PVDF) layer, a middle chitosan (CS) layer, and a top superhydrophobic fumed silica-chitosan (SiO2/CS) layer modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptafluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (FAS). Under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the LSSF quickly bent toward the CS layer with a large bending angle (>200°), high sensitivity (∼7 °C change), and great repeatability (>1000 cycles), which was attributed to the significant difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between CS and PVDF and the water desorption-induced volume shrinking in the CS layer. Furthermore, the LSSF also exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle of 165° and a low water sliding angle of 2.8°. Importantly, owing to the high light absorption of CNTs, the LSSF-based biomimetic flower was able to not only bloom under NIR light exposure but also normally work when applying sunlight irradiation. Thanks to the electric conductivity and excellent water repellency, the LSSF was capable of being designed as an electric switch to remotely turn on/off the circuit even under a watery environment, and the LSSF was further successfully applied in water-droplet manipulation. The findings conceivably provided a new strategy to fabricate light stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic films for versatile applications.

Abstract
Icing on an aircraft is the cause of numerous adverse effects on aerodynamic performance. Although the issue was recognized in the 1920s, the icing problem is still an area of ongoing research due to the complexity of the icing phenomena. This review article aims to summarize current research on aircraft icing in two fundamental topics: icing physics and icing mitigation techniques. The icing physics focuses on fixed wings, rotors, and engines severely impacted by icing. The study of engine icing has recently become focused on ice-crystal icing. Icing mitigation techniques reviewed are based on active, passive, and hybrid methods. The active mitigation techniques include those based on thermal and mechanical methods, which are currently in use on aircraft. The passive mitigation techniques discussed are based on current ongoing studies in chemical coatings. The hybrid mitigation technique is reviewed as a combination of the thermal method (active) and chemical coating (passive) to lower energy consumption.

Abstract
Ice adhesion on aerospace-relevant materials is both complex and not well understood. Measuring such adhesion and understanding the underlying physics involved require reliable testing techniques that can yield multifaceted data sets. The latter includes the surface morphology, that is, roughness, and its spatial correlation structure, resolving substrate-induced strain, and direct mechanical testing of adhesion. As part of a continuing investigation of ice adhesion on a relevant surface, we performed time-dependent stress ramps on aluminum surfaces. The temperature range explored, from -20 to -7 °C, allowed spontaneous icing and ice morphologies, namely, below or above -15 °C. Additionally, we characterized the spatial correlation surface roughness maps of the specimens. Our novel test protocol yields reproducible and high-precision results when compared with alternative methods reported throughout the literature. The stress-ramp test data using the proposed protocol show that the apparent average critical stress (proportional to the adhesion strength) depends on both stress-ramp rate and temperature. More specifically, the adhesion strength is higher for higher stress rates and increases with decreasing temperature. The stress-ramp test yields the full span of the time-dependent adhesive behavior of ice and particularly the upper bound. Additional stress-concentration analysis is needed to correct for this effect and thereby yield the critical stress rather than the average value produced by our procedure. The results in this work should aid to improve our understanding of ice adhesion mechanisms.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces hold great prospects for extremely diverse applications owing to their water repellence property. The essential feature of superhydrophobicity is micro-/nano-scopic roughness to reserve a large portion of air under a liquid drop. However, the vulnerability of the delicate surface textures significantly impedes the practical applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Robust superhydrophobicity is a must to meet the rigorous industrial requirements and standards for commercial products. In recent years, major advancements have been made in elucidating the mechanisms of wetting transitions, design strategies and fabrication techniques of superhydrophobicity. This review will first introduce the mechanisms of wetting transitions, including the thermodynamic stability of the Cassie state and its breakdown conditions. Then we highlight the development, current status and future prospects of robust superhydrophobicity, including characterization, design strategies and fabrication techniques. In particular, design strategies, which are classified into passive resistance and active regeneration for the first time, are proposed and discussed extensively.

Abstract
Icing of water (moisture) at subzero temperatures with different length scales is harmful to a variety of applications spanning from large-scale aircraft to small camera lens. Existing strategies relying on controlling the surface structure and material are encumbered with shortcomings of short frost delay time, poor durability, and difficulty in large-scale production. Inspired from the mucus secretion of mollusks, we introduce organohydrogel dynamic interfaces that can perform dynamic and reversible exchange of the cryoprotectant and water at the interface, resulting in exceptional antifrosting, antiadhesion, and deicing properties with long-term durability. The replenishable coating shows superlubrication to the surface ice with a sliding angle up to 1.9 ± 0.4o and a frost delay time up to 970 ± 31 min in the presence of water spray (99% relative humidity) at subzero temperatures. The strategy offers a reliable and scalable solution to prevent engineering surfaces, i.e., aircraft, pavement, bridge, and other public facilities, from icing/frosting and ice adhesion, even under extreme cold environments.

Abstract
The ability to manipulate droplets can be utilized to develop various smart sensors or actuators, endowing them with fascinating applications for drug delivery, detection of target analytes, environmental monitoring, intelligent control, and so on. However, the stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic materials for normal water droplets cannot satisfy the requirements from some certain circumstances, i.e., liquid lenses and biosensors (detection of various additives in water/blood droplets). Stimuli-responsive wetting/dewetting behaviors of exceptional droplets are open issues and are attracting much attention from across the world. In this perspective article, the unconventional droplets are divided into three categories: ionic or surfactant additives in water droplets, oil droplets, and bubble droplets. We first introduce several classical wettability models of droplets and some methods to achieve wettability transition. The unusual droplet motion is also introduced in detail. There are four main types of locomotion modes, which are vertical rebound motion, lateral motion, self-propulsion motion, and anisotropic wettability controlled sliding behavior. The driving mechanism for the droplet motion is briefly introduced as well. Some approaches to achieve this manipulation goal, such as light irradiation, electronic, magnetic, acid-base, thermal, and mechanical ways will be taken into consideration. Finally, the current researches on unconventional droplets extending to polymer droplets and liquid metal droplets on the surface of special wettability materials are summarized and the prospect of unconventional droplet research directions in the field of on-demand transport application will be proposed.

Abstract
Realizing icephobic surfaces with low ice adhesion and durability continues to be fascinating as well as challenging. Herein, a norbornene-based fluorinated polymer (NFP) with high flexibility and high tensile strength is designed and fabricated using a fluorinated side chain and a norbornene backbone, displaying low ice shear strength less than 20 kPa and excellent durability. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that the flexibility of the polymer chains and the synergistic macromolecular aggregation of the fluorinated side groups and the norbornene backbone play key roles in the excellent surface icephobic properties of the NFP films. Moreover, we also develop a facile approach to the design of durable icephobic slippery surfaces, which possess remarkable icephobic performance. This study not only sheds light on the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also provides a new avenue to conveniently realize anti-icing coatings.

Droplet Impact on the Cold Elastic Superhydrophobic Membrane with Low Ice Adhesion. COATINGS 2020. [DOI: 10.3390/coatings10100964] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/17/2022]
Abstract
The elastic membranes with different surface stiffness were fabricated via spin-coating followed by the laser ablation. The as-fabricated elastic membrane exhibited superhydrophobicity with a rough microstructure. The droplet impacting experiment on the cold elastic superhydrophobic membrane was conducted, and the influence of surface stiffness and impacting speed on the droplet impacting process were investigated. It was found that the elastic superhydrophobic membrane exhibits a robust anti-icing performance compared with the elastic hydrophobic membrane. A lower surface stiffness corresponds to a larger deformation degree of the elastic membrane and to a smaller maximum droplet spreading diameter. Moreover, the contact time decreases with the increase of impacting speed as for the same stiffness of the cold elastic superhydrophobic membrane. The underlying mechanism of the cold elastic membrane with low ice adhesion may be due to the face that the deformation of the superhydrophobic membrane provides an elastic force for the droplet to detach from the surface and thus reduce the heat transfer between the droplet and the surface.

One-step synthesis of core shell cellulose-silica/n-octadecane microcapsules and their application in waterborne self-healing multiple protective fabric coatings. Abstract
Exploiting water-based fabric coatings outfitted with multiple protections (e.g., waterproofness, ultraviolet (UV) resistance and thermal insulation) are urgently demanded. Nevertheless, achieving the multifunction and durability poses the major challenge. In the present study, novel multifunctional cellulose/silica hybrid microcapsules were developed by one-step emulsion-solvent diffusion; these microcapsules were well dispersed into waterborne silicone resins to form waterborne multiple protective fabric coatings. Since the encapsulated phase change materials were in the core of capsules, and the hydrophobic coupling reagent and UV absorber were grafted onto the silicas in the shell of capsules, these fabric coatings exhibited high superhydrophobicity, UV protection and thermal insulation. Moreover, because hydrophobic coupling reagent and UV absorber in the shell-cellulose of capsules exhibited easy mobility, the fabric coatings displayed self-repairability of superhydrophobicity and UV protection even after being damaged chemically or mechanically. The fabric coating presented in this study could have a range of applications, covering special protective fabric, high-altitude garments as well as self-cleaning materials.
