Abstract
Conjugated polymers have become materials of choice for applications ranging from flexible optoelectronics to neuromorphic computing, but their polydispersity and tendency to aggregate pose severe challenges to their precise characterization. Here, the combination of vacuum electrospray deposition (ESD) with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to acquire, within the same experiment, assembly patterns, full mass distributions, exact sequencing, and quantification of polymerization defects. In a first step, the ESD-STM results are successfully benchmarked against NMR for low molecular mass polymers, where this technique is still applicable. Then, it is shown that ESD-STM is capable of reaching beyond its limits by characterizing, with the same accuracy, samples that are inaccessible to NMR. Finally, a recalibration procedure is proposed for size exclusion chromatography (SEC) mass distributions, using ESD-STM results as a reference. The distinctiveness of the molecular-scale information obtained by ESD-STM highlights its role as a crucial technique for the characterization of conjugated polymers.

Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed direct arylation of azoles with (hetero)aryl halides is nowadays one of the most versatile and efficient procedures for the selective synthesis of heterobiaryls. Although this procedure is, due to its characteristics, also of great interest in the industrial field, the wide use of a reaction medium such as DMF or DMA, two polar aprotic solvents coded as dangerous according to environmental, health, safety (EHS) parameters, strongly limits its actual use. In contrast, the use of aromatic solvents as the reaction medium for direct arylations, although some of them show good EHS values, is poorly reported, probably due to their low solvent power against reagents and their potential involvement in undesired side reactions. In this paper we report an unprecedented selective C-5 arylation procedure involving anisole as an EHS green reaction solvent. In addition, the beneficial role of benzoic acid as an additive was also highlighted, a role that had never been previously described.

Abstract
Sequence control in synthetic copolymers remains a tantalizing objective in polymer science due to the influence of sequence on material properties and self-organization. A greater understanding of sequence development throughout the polymerization process will aid the design of simple, generalizable methods to control sequence and tune supramolecular assembly. In previous simulations of solution-based step-growth copolymerizations, we have shown that weak, non-bonding attractions between monomers of the same type can produce a microphase separation among the lengthening nascent oligomers and thereby alter sequence. This work explores the phenomenon further, examining how effective attractive interactions, mediated by a solvent selective for one of the reacting species, impact the development of sequence and the supramolecular assembly in a simple A-B copolymerization. We find that as the effective attractions between monomers increase, an emergent self-organization of the reactants causes a shift in reaction kinetics and sequence development. When the solvent-mediated interactions are selective enough, the simple mixture of A and B monomers oligomerize and self-assemble into structures characteristic of amphiphilic copolymers. The composition and morphology of these structures and the sequences of their chains are sensitive to the relative balance of affinities between the comonomer species. Our results demonstrate the impact of differing A-B monomer-solvent affinities on sequence development in solution-based copolymerizations and are of consequence to the informed design of synthetic methods for sequence controlled amphiphilic copolymers and their aggregates.

Abstract
For over a decade, Direct Arylation Polymerization (DArP) has been demonstrated to be an eco-friendly, facile, and low-cost alternative to conventional methodologies such as Stille polymerization for conjugated polymer synthesis. By accessing through a C-H activation pathway, DArP offers a reduction of synthetic steps while eliminating the generation of stoichiometric, highly toxic organotin byproducts. However, as the major component in these reactions, the solvents most prevalently employed for DArP are hazardous and produced from unsustainable sources, such as dimethylacetamide (DMA), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene. Although the use of sustainable alternative solvents such as 2-MeTHF and cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) has recently emerged, drawbacks of ethereal solvents include the need for a pressurized reaction setup as well as potential peroxide formation. While aromatic solvents are superior in solubilizing conjugated polymers, very little has been done in searching for more sustainable, benign alternatives for this class of solvent. Herein, we report the application of a sustainable, naturally sourced, high-boiling aromatic solvent, p-cymene, to DArP for the first time. p-Cymene was found to display excellent solubilizing ability in the synthesis of a broad scope of alternating copolymers with Mn up to 51.3 kg/mol and yields up to 96.2%, outperforming those prepared using CPME and toluene. Structural analysis revealed the exclusion of defects in these polymers prepared using p-cymene as the solvent which, in the case of a 2,2'-bithiophene monomer, is challenging to access through the use of conventional solvents for DArP, such as DMA and toluene.

Abstract
Two water/alcohol soluble conjugated polymers (WSCPs), based on naphthalenediimide and amino-functionalized 3,4-(propylenedioxy)thiophene, were synthesized via direct arylation polycondensation (DArP). The polymers worked well as electron transporting layers (ETLs) for fullerene-based and fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs), presenting an enhancement by above 40% compared to the control devices, respectively. The doping properties and high electron mobilities of these WSCPs endow them with high performance. The research study developed an effective method to synthesize ETLs for highly efficient OSCs, which was rarely reported.

Abstract
Balanced charge transport is particularly important for transistors. Hence, ambipolar organic semiconductors with comparable transport capabilities for both positive and negative charges are highly sought-after. Here, we report detailed insights into the electronic structure of PNDITBT, which is an alternating copolymer of naphthalene diimide (NDI), thiophene, benzothiodiazole (B), and thiophene (T) units, as gained by time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy combined with quantum-chemical calculations. The results are compared to those obtained for PNDIT2 and PCDTBT, which are derivatives without B and NDI acceptor units, respectively. These two polymers show dominant n- and p-channel behavior in organic field-effect transistors. The TBT moiety clearly dominates the electronic structure of PNDITBT, although less so than in PCDTBT. Furthermore, the triplet exciton most probably delocalizes along the backbone, exhibits a highly homogeneous environment, and planarizes the polymer backbone. Obtaining the zero-field splitting tensors of these triplet states by means of quantum-chemical calculations reveals the triplet energy sublevel associated with the molecular axis parallel to the backbone to be preferentially populated, while the one perpendicular to the aromatic plane is not populated at all, consistent with the spin-density distribution. PNDITBT consisting of two acceptors (NDI and B) has a complex electronic structure, as evident from the two charge-transfer bands in its absorption spectrum. TREPR spectroscopy provides a detailed insight on a molecular level not available by and complementing other methods.

Abstract
Polycondensation via Pd-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative-coupling reaction of 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluorobiphenyl with thiophene analogues was studied. The synthetic protocol, in which employment of prefunctionalized starting monomers was fully avoided, allowed straightforward access to an alternating π-conjugated polymer. The addition of K2CO3 to the catalytic system promotes the cross-coupling reaction and suppresses the undesired homocoupling reaction, producing the corresponding donor-acceptor type π-conjugated polymers with minor homocoupling defects. The reaction also proceeded using O2 as the terminal oxidant, resulting in lower loading of the Ag oxidant. The obtained polymer was evaluated as an emitting material for an organic light-emitting diode.

Impact of Acceptor Fluorination on the Performance of All-Polymer Solar Cells. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2018; 10:955-969. Abstract
Here, we systematically study the effect of fluorination on the performance of all-polymer solar cells by employing a naphthalene diimide (NDI)-based polymer acceptor with thiophene-flanked phenyl co-monomer. Fluorination of the phenyl co-monomer with either two or four fluorine units is used to create a series of acceptor polymers with either no fluorination (PNDITPhT), bifluorination (PNDITF2T), or tetrafluorination (PNDITF4T). In blends with the donor polymer PTB7-Th, fluorination results in an increase in power conversion efficiency from 3.1 to 4.6% despite a decrease in open-circuit voltage from 0.86 V (unfluorinated) to 0.78 V (tetrafluorinated). Countering this decrease in open-circuit voltage is an increase in short-circuit current from 7.7 to 11.7 mA/cm2 as well as an increase in fill factor from 0.45 to 0.53. The origin of the improvement in performance with fluorination is explored using a combination of morphological, photophysical, and charge-transport studies. Interestingly, fluorination is found not to affect the ultrafast charge-generation kinetics, but instead is found to improve charge-collection yield subsequent to charge generation, linked to improved electron mobility and improved phase separation. Fluorination also leads to improved light absorption, with the blue-shifted absorption profile of the fluorinated polymers complementing the absorption profile of the low-band gap PTB7-Th.

Abstract
Direct C-H activation of pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) is reported for the first time. The method avoids cumbersome pathways involving bromination usually required for further cross-coupling. Good to excellent yields of mono- and di-substituted PMDI derivatives can be obtained under optimized reaction conditions. The reaction scope was also explored, and the materials were characterized with respect to their thermal, optical, and electronic properties.
