Design of Core-Shell Quantum Dots-3D WS2 Nanowall Hybrid Nanostructures with High-Performance Bifunctional Sensing Applications

Upconversion Material-Plasmonic Metal-Semiconductor Ternary Heteronanostructures for Wide-Range Solar-to-Chemical Energy Conversion

Harvesting full-spectrum solar energy is a critical issue for developing high-performance photocatalysts. Here, we report a hierarchical heteronanostructure consisting of upconverting, plasmonic, and semiconducting materials as a solar-to-chemical energy conversion platform that can exploit a wide range of sunlight (from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared). Lanthanide-doped NaYF4 nanorod-spherical Au nanocrystals-TiO2 ternary hybrid nanostructures with a well-controlled configuration and intimate contact between the constituent materials could be synthesized by a wet-chemical method. Notably, the prepared ternary hybrids exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the H2 evolution reaction under simulated solar and near-infrared light irradiation due to their broadband photoresponsivity and strong optical interaction between the constituents. Through systematic studies on the mechanism of energy transfer during the photocatalysis of the ternary hybrids, we revealed that upconverted photon energy from the upconversion domain transfers to the Au and TiO2 domains primarily through the Förster resonance energy transfer process, resulting in enhanced photocatalysis.

Wearable Nano-Based Gas Sensors for Environmental Monitoring and Encountered Challenges in Optimization

With a rising emphasis on public safety and quality of life, there is an urgent need to ensure optimal air quality, both indoors and outdoors. Detecting toxic gaseous compounds plays a pivotal role in shaping our sustainable future. This review aims to elucidate the advancements in smart wearable (nano)sensors for monitoring harmful gaseous pollutants, such as ammonia (NH3), nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), hydrocarbons (CxHy), and hydrogen fluoride (HF). Differentiating this review from its predecessors, we shed light on the challenges faced in enhancing sensor performance and offer a deep dive into the evolution of sensing materials, wearable substrates, electrodes, and types of sensors. Noteworthy materials for robust detection systems encompass 2D nanostructures, carbon nanomaterials, conducting polymers, nanohybrids, and metal oxide semiconductors. A dedicated section dissects the significance of circuit integration, miniaturization, real-time sensing, repeatability, reusability, power efficiency, gas-sensitive material deposition, selectivity, sensitivity, stability, and response/recovery time, pinpointing gaps in the current knowledge and offering avenues for further research. To conclude, we provide insights and suggestions for the prospective trajectory of smart wearable nanosensors in addressing the extant challenges.

A route to metalloligands consolidated silver nanoclusters by grafting thiacalix[4]arene onto polyoxovanadates

Metalloligands provide a potent strategy for manipulating the surface metal arrangements of metal nanoclusters, but their synthesis and subsequent installation onto metal nanoclusters remains a significant challenge. Herein, two atomically precise silver nanoclusters {Ag14[(TC4A)6(V9O16)](CyS)3} (Ag14) and {Ag43S[(TC4A)2(V4O9)]3(CyS)9(PhCOO)3Cl3(SO4)4(DMF)3·6DMF} (Ag43) are synthesized by controlling reaction temperature (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene). Interestingly, the 3D scaffold-like [(TC4A)6(V9O16)]11- metalloligand in Ag14 and 1D arcuate [(TC4A)2(V4O9)]6- metalloligand in Ag43 exhibit a dual role that is the internal polyoxovanadates as anion template and the surface TC4A4- as the passivating agent. Furthermore, the thermal-induced structure transformation between Ag14 and Ag43 is achieved based on the temperature-dependent assembly process. Ag14 shows superior photothermal conversion performance than Ag43 in solid state indicating its potential for remote laser ignition. Here, we show the potential of two thiacalix[4]arene modified polyoxovanadates metalloligands in the assembly of metal nanoclusters and provide a cornerstone for the remote laser ignition applications of silver nanoclusters.

Embedded Integration of Sb2Se3 Film by Low-Temperature Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Reaction with Polycrystalline Si Transistor for High-Performance Flexible Visible-to-Near-Infrared Photodetector

Flexible optoelectronics have garnered considerable interest for applications such as optical communication, motion capture, biosignal detection, and night vision. Transition-metal dichalcogenides are widely used as flexible photodetectors owing to their outstanding electrical and optical properties and high flexibility. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) Sb₂Se₃ film-based one transistor-one resistor (1T1R) flexible photodetector with high photosensing current and detection ranges from visible to near-infrared was developed. The flexible 1T1R was fabricated using an efficient field-effect transistor platform with the 2D Sb₂Se₃ film directly deposited on the sensing region using a low-temperature plasma-assisted chemical vapor reaction. The photodetector could achieve a maximum I_photo/I_dark of 15,000 under white light with a power density of 26 mW/cm², in which the photodetector showed quick rising and falling response times of 0.16 and 0.28 s, respectively. The 2D Sb₂Se₃ film exhibits broadband absorption in the visible and IR regions, yielding an excellent photoresponse under laser illumination with different wavelengths. To investigate the flexibility and stability of the 1T1R photodetector, the photoresponses were measured under different bending cycles and curvatures, which maintained its functions and exhibited high stability under convex and concave bending at a curvature radius of 20 mm.

Hydrothermal synthesis and controlled growth of group-VIB W metal compound nanostructures from tungsten oxide to tungsten disulphide

Two-dimensional lateral group-VIB transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted much attention in the fast evolving field of advanced photoelectric functional materials, but their controllable fabrication is challenging. Herein, an emerging synthetic route for sulfurization of tungsten oxide was developed. During the hydrothermal reaction, the optimization of the precursor selection and synthesis parameters led to the tunable properties of WO₃-WS_xO_y-WS₂ nanostructures. The vulcanization was thermodynamically favorably at low temperatures and in an environment with a sufficient S source, wherein WO₃ was reduced by H atoms to WO_3-x, and S atoms were preferentially adsorbed on O vacancies. The WS_xO_y nanostructures have a narrow band-gap attributed to the effect of S on the valence band top and electronic density of states by density functional theory. The photocurrent response and charge transfer properties of WS_xO_y were improved due to the charge transport between WS₂ and WO₃. Understanding the formation and transformation of WS₂ nanostructures in solution contributes to the discovery of the important structure-efficiency relationship, which may be extended to other TMDs systems. Hence, extensive research efforts are still needed to develop safer and more efficient synthesis and modification methods to fully utilize the distinctive advantageous properties of TMDs in the photoelectric field.

Tailoring the Vertical and Planar Growth of 2D WS2 Thin Films Using Pulsed Laser Deposition for Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties

In this study, pulsed laser deposition has been utilized for the controllable synthesis of WS₂ thin films with growth orientation ranging from vertically to horizontally aligned layers, and the effect of growth parameters has been investigated. The growth of thin films on SiO₂ substrates at three different pressures (30, 50, and 70 mTorr) and three different temperatures (400, 500, and 600 °C) has been studied. Detailed characterizations carried out on the as-grown layers clearly show the formation of the 2H-WS₂ phase and its morphological evolution with deposition conditions. Atomic force microscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy have been used to deduce the growth mechanism of the vertical and planar films with different deposition parameters. The samples grown with a combination of lower temperatures and higher pressures exhibit a vertical flake-like growth with a flake thickness of ∼2-5 nm. However, at higher temperatures and lower pressures, the film growth is observed to be rather planar. The gas sensing parameters and the underlying mechanism have been observed to be quite different for vertically and horizontally grown layers. The vertical layers showed a selective response toward NO₂ gas at room temperature (RT) with a limit of detection less than 50 ppb. In comparison, a very subdued and poor gas sensing response was recorded for the planar film at RT. A large specific area and abundance of active edge sites along with the flat basal plane present in the vertically grown layers seem to be responsible for efficient gas sensing toward NO₂.

Resistive-Based Gas Sensors Using Quantum Dots: A Review

Quantum dots (QDs) are used progressively in sensing areas because of their special electrical properties due to their extremely small size. This paper discusses the gas sensing features of QD-based resistive sensors. Different types of pristine, doped, composite, and noble metal decorated QDs are discussed. In particular, the review focus primarily on the sensing mechanisms suggested for these gas sensors. QDs show a high sensing performance at generally low temperatures owing to their extremely small sizes, making them promising materials for the realization of reliable and high-output gas-sensing devices.

Solvent-Controlled Condensation of [Mo2 O5 (PTC4A)2 ]6- Metalloligand in Stepwise Assembly of Hexagonal and Rectangular Ag18 Nanoclusters

Stepwise assembly starting from a preassembled metalloligand is a promising approach to obtain otherwise unattainable silver nanoclusters, but hard to be intrinsically identified due to the lack of convincing evidence to justify such a process. Herein, hexagonal and rectangular Ag₁₈ nanoclusters are constructed from the [Mo₂ O₅ (PTC4A)₂ ]^6- (H₄ PTC4A=p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene) metalloligand through stepwise assembly. The formation of the metalloligand is confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, then assembled with silver ions to form two geometrically different Ag₁₈ nanoclusters in different solvents. The cyclization from the metalloligand to [(Mo₂ O₅ PTC4A)₆ ]^12- can be realized without alcohols and otherwise blocked by them. The installation of this metalloligand not only provides comprehensive understanding of how the solvents regulate the silver nanocluster structures, but also brings new insights for the controllable ligand metallization and subsequent condensation.

Hybridization chain reaction for regulating surface capacitance of organic photoelectrochemical transistor toward sensitive miRNA detection

Photon-enabled bioelectronics has long been pursued in modern electronics due to their non-contact, remote-control, and even self-powered function interfacing the biological world with semiconductor devices. The debuting organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) relies on the photovoltage generated by the semiconductors to modulate the channel conductance, which enables light-fueled operation at zero gate bias. Inspired by the insulating nature of macrobiomolecules and surface capacitance mechanism, herein we demonstrate the biological regulation of the surface capacitance towards new OPECT biodetection, which was exemplified by a CdS quantum dots/TiO₂ nanotubes photoanode accommodating hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification with the target of biomarker miRNA-17. Formation of the non-conducting DNA layer from the miRNA-17-oriented HCR could decrease the surface capacitance and increase the corresponding fractional potential drop, shifting the transfer curve horizontally to higher gate voltage and thus producing different drain currents. The OPECT biosensor exhibited a linear relationship with the miRNA-17 concentration on the logarithmic axis in the range from 1 pm. to 10 μm with a detection limit of 1 pm. This work not only represented a generic methodology of miRNA detection, but also provided a universal mechanism for the operation of advanced OPECT bioanalytics.

Edge-Topological Regulation for in Situ Fabrication of Bridging Nanosensors

In situ fabrication of well-defined bridging nanostructures is an interesting and unique approach to three-dimensionally design nanosensor structures, which are hardly attainable by other methods. Here, we demonstrate the significant effect of edge-topological regulation on in situ fabrication of ZnO bridging nanosensors. When employing seed layers with a sharp edge, which is a well-defined structure in conventional lithography, the bridging angles and electrical resistances between two opposing electrodes were randomly distributed. The stochastic nature of bridging growth direction at the sharp edges inherently causes such unintentional variation of structural and electrical properties. We propose an edgeless seed layer structure using a two-layers resist method to solve the above uncontrollability of bridging nanosensors. Such bridging nanosensors not only substantially improved the uniformity of structural and electrical properties between two opposing electrodes but also significantly enhanced the sensing responses for NO₂ with the smaller variance and the lower limit of detection via in situ controlled electrical contacts.

2D SnSe2 nanoflakes decorated with 1D ZnO nanowires for ppb-level NO2 detection at room temperature

The detection of air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is of great importance arising from its great harm to the ecological environment and human health. However, the detection range of most NO₂ sensors is ppm-level, and it is still challenging to achieve lower concentration (ppb-level) NO₂ detection. Herein, 2D tin diselenide nanoflakes decorated with 1D zinc oxide nanowires (SnSe₂/ZnO) heterojunctions were first reported by facile hydrothermal and ultra-sonication methods. The response of the fabricated SnSe₂/ZnO sensor enhances 3.41 times on average compared with that of pure SnSe₂ sensor to 50-150 ppb NO₂ with a high detection sensitivity (22.57 ppm^-1) at room temperature. In addition, the SnSe₂/ZnO sensor has complete recovery, negligible cross-sensitivity, and small relative standard deviation (6.98%) during the 1 month sensing test, which can meet the requirements for NO₂ detection in environmental monitoring. The enhanced NO₂ sensing performance can be attributed to the n-n heterojunction constructed between SnSe₂ and ZnO. The as-prepared sensor based on SnSe₂/ZnO hybrid significantly promotes the development of the low detection limit of the NO₂ sensor at room temperature.

Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Applications in Theranostics

Nanomaterials are endowed with unique features and essential properties suitable for employing in the field of nanomedicine. The nanomaterials can be classified as 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D based on their dimensions. The nanomaterials can be malleable and ductile and they can be drawn into wires and sheets. Examples of nanomaterials are quantum dots (0D), nanorods, nanowires (1D), nanosheets (2D), and nanocubes (3D). These nanomaterials can be synthesized using top-down and bottom-up approaches. The achievements of 0D and 1D nanomaterials are used to detect trace heavy metal (e.g., Pb2+) and have higher sensitivity with the order of five as compared to conventional sensors. The achievements of 2D and 3D nanomaterials are used as diagnostic and therapeutic agents with multifunctional ability in imaging systems such as PET, SPECT, etc. These imaging modalities can be used to track the drug in living tissues. This review comprises the state-of-the-art of the different dimensions of the nanomaterials employed in theranostics. The nanomaterials with different dimensions have unique physicochemical properties that can be utilized for therapy and diagnosis. The multifunctional ability of the nanomaterials can have a distinct advantage that is used in the field of theranostics. Different dimensions of the nanomaterials would have more scope in the field of nanomedicine.

An Integrated Photoelectrochemical Nanotool for Intracellular Drug Delivery and Evaluation of Treatment Effect

With reduced background and high sensitivity, photoelectrochemistry (PEC) may be applied as an intracellular nanotool and open a new technological direction of single-cell study. Nevertheless, the present palette of single-cell tools lacks such a PEC-oriented solution. Here a dual-functional photocathodic single-cell nanotool capable of direct electroosmotic intracellular drug delivery and evaluation of oxidative stress is devised by engineering a target-specific organic molecule/NiO/Ni film at the tip of a nanopipette. Specifically, the organic molecule probe serves simultaneously as the biorecognition element and sensitizer to synergize with p-type NiO. Upon intracellular delivery at picoliter level, the oxidative stress effect will cause structural change of the organic probe, switching its optical absorption and altering the cathodic response. This work has revealed the potential of PEC single-cell nanotool and extended the boundary of current single-cell electroanalysis.

Enhanced Selectivity in Volatile Organic Compound Gas Sensors Based on ReS2-FETs under Light-Assisted and Gate-Bias Tunable Operation

Using a single-device two-dimensional (2D) rhenium disulfide (ReS₂) field-effect transistor (FET) with enhanced gas species selectivity by light illumination, we reported a selective and sensitive detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) gases. 2D materials have the advantage of a high surface-area-to-volume ratio for high sensitivity to molecules attached to the surface and tunable carrier concentration through field-effect control from the back-gate of the channel, while keeping the top surface open to the air for chemical sensing. In addition to these advantages, ReS₂ has a direct band gap also in multilayer cases, which sets it apart from other transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We take advantage of the effective response of ReS₂ to light illumination to improve the selectivity and gas-sensing efficiency of a ReS₂-FET device. We found that light illumination modulates the drain current response in a ReS₂-FET to adsorbed molecules, and the sensing activity differs depending on the gas species used, such as acetone, ethanol, and methanol. Furthermore, wavelength and carrier density rely on certain variations in light-modulated sensing behaviors for each chemical. The device will distinguish the gas concentration in a mixture of VOCs using the differences induced by light illumination, enhancing the selectivity of the sensor device. Our results shed new light on the sensing technologies for realizing a large-scale sensor network in the Internet-of-Things era.

Recent Progress of Nanostructured Sensing Materials from 0D to 3D: Overview of Structure-Property-Application Relationship for Gas Sensors

Along with the progress of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanomaterials with attractive structural and functional properties have gained more attention than ever before, especially in the field of electronic sensors. In recent years, the gas sensing devices have made great achievement and also created wide application prospects, which leads to a new wave of research for designing advanced sensing materials. There is no doubt that the characteristics are highly governed by the sensitive layers. For this reason, important advances for the outstanding, novel sensing materials with different dimensional structures including 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D are reported and summarized systematically. The sensing materials cover noble metals, metal oxide semiconductors, carbon nanomaterials, metal dichalcogenides, g-C₃ N₄ , MXenes, and complex composites. Discussion is also extended to the relation between sensing performances and their structure, electronic properties, and surface chemistry. In addition, some gas sensing related applications are also highlighted, including environment monitoring, breath analysis, food quality and safety, and flexible wearable electronics, from current situation and the facing challenges to the future research perspectives.

Recent Advances in Two-Dimensional Quantum Dots and Their Applications

Two-dimensional quantum dots have received a lot of attention in recent years due to their fascinating properties and widespread applications in sensors, batteries, white light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, phototransistors, etc. Atomically thin two-dimensional quantum dots derived from graphene, layered transition metal dichalcogenide, and phosphorene have sparked researchers' interest with their unique optical and electronic properties, such as a tunable energy bandgap, efficient electronic transport, and semiconducting characteristics. In this review, we provide in-depth analysis of the characteristics of two-dimensional quantum dots materials, their synthesis methods, and opportunities and challenges for novel device applications. This analysis will serve as a tipping point for learning about the recent breakthroughs in two-dimensional quantum dots and motivate more scientists and engineers to grasp two-dimensional quantum dots materials by incorporating them into a variety of electrical and optical fields.

Wireless Self-Powered High-Performance Integrated Nanostructured-Gas-Sensor Network for Future Smart Homes

The accelerated evolution of communication platforms including Internet of Things (IoT) and the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication network makes it possible to build intelligent gas sensor networks for real-time monitoring chemical safety and personal health. However, this application scenario requires a challenging combination of characteristics of gas sensors including small formfactor, low cost, ultralow power consumption, superior sensitivity, and high intelligence. Herein, self-powered integrated nanostructured-gas-sensor (SINGOR) systems and a wirelessly connected SINGOR network are demonstrated here. The room-temperature operated SINGOR system can be self-driven by indoor light with a Si solar cell, and it features ultrahigh sensitivity to H₂, formaldehyde, toluene, and acetone with the record low limits of detection (LOD) of 10, 2, 1, and 1 ppb, respectively. Each SINGOR consisting of an array of nanostructured sensors has the capability of gas pattern recognition and classification. Furthermore, multiple SINGOR systems are wirelessly connected as a sensor network, which has successfully demonstrated flammable gas leakage detection and alarm function. They can also achieve gas leakage localization with satisfactory precision when deployed in one single room. These successes promote the development of using nanostructured-gas-sensor network for wide range applications including smart home/building and future smart city.

Highly Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction in MXene Quantum Dots-Monolayer WS2 Heterostructure

Since the Ti₃ C₂ was discovered in 2011, the family of MXenes has attracted much attention. MXenes offer great potential in the tuning of many fundamental properties by the synthesis of new structures. The synthesis methods of MXene mainly require steps including immersing a MAX phase in hydrofluoric acid (HF) and processing at high temperatures. However, the HF may be hard to acquire in many countries and processing at high temperatures may cause risk issues. In this article, a simple and cost-effective synthesis of Ti₃ C₂ T_x quantum dots (QDs) via chemical solution method that follows the long-time magnetic stirring process-initiated etching of Al atoms from commercial Ti₃ AlC₂ powder at room temperature is introduced. With WS₂ monolayer sitting over the MXenes QD arrays, a higher level of photoluminescence (PL) enhancement is found in the heterostructure with increasing laser power at room temperature and a few novel quasi-particles species in the heterostructure at -190 °C. The observations show that the possible plasmonic behavior initiated by QD arrays and the suspension state of WS₂ may coplay the roles to trigger multiple quasi-particles species. This study can be an important benchmark for the extensive understanding of quasi-particles species, and their dynamics.

Hybrid structure of PbS QDs and vertically-few-layer MoS2 nanosheets array for broadband photodetector

A novel three-dimensional (3D) vertically-few-layer MoS2 (V-MoS2) nanosheets- zero-dimensional PbS quantum dots (QDs) hybrid structure based broadband photodetector was fabricated, and its photoelectric performance was investigated in detail. We synthesized the V-MoS2 nanosheets by chemical vapor deposition, using the TiO2 layer as the induced layer, and proposed a possible growth mechanism. The use of the TiO2 induction layer successfully changed the growth direction of MoS2 from parallel to vertical. The prepared V-MoS2 nanosheets have a large specific surface area, abundantly exposed edges and excellent light absorption capacity. The V-MoS2 nanosheets detector was then fabricated and investigated, which exhibits a high sensitivity for 635 nm light, a fast response time and an excellent photoelectric response. The V-MoS2 nanosheets with a height of approximately 1 μm successfully broke the light absorption limit caused by the atomic thickness. Finally, we fabricated the PbS QDs/V-MoS2 nanosheets hybrid detector and demonstrated their potential for high-performance broadband photodetectors. The response wavelength of the hybrid detector extends from the visible band to the near-infrared band. The responsivity of the hybrid detector reaches 1.46 A W-1 under 1450 nm illumination. The combination of 3D MoS2 nanosheets and QDs further improves the performance of MoS2-based photodetector devices. We believe that the proposed zero-dimensional QDs and 3D vertical nanosheets hybrid structure broadband photodetector provides a promising way for the next-generation optoelectronic devices.
