Synthesis and Dual-Mode Electrochromism of Anisotropic Monoclinic Nb12O29 Colloidal Nanoplatelets

Niobium Boride/Graphene Directing High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries Derived from Favorable Surface Passivation

Efficient catalysts are needed to accelerate the conversion and suppress the shuttling of polysulfides (LiPSs) to promote the further development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Intermetallic niobium boride (NbB2) has indefinite potential due to superior catalytic activity. Nonetheless, the lack of a rational understanding of catalysis creates a challenge for the design of catalysts. Herein, a NbB2/reduced graphene oxide-modified PP separator (NbB2/rGO/PP) is rationally designed. Essential, an in-depth insight into the catalysis mechanism of NbB2 toward LiPSs is established based on experiments and multiperspective measurement characterization, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and density functional theory (DFT). It has been uncovered that the actual catalyst that interacts with LiPSs in NbB2 is the passivated surface with an oxide layer (O2-NbB2), which occurs through B-O-Li and Nb-O-Li bonds, rather than the clean NbB2 surface. And the decomposition barrier of Li2S is greatly reduced by a substantial margin, dropping from 3.390 to 0.93 and 0.85 eV on the Nb-O and B-O surfaces, respectively, with fast Li+ diffusivity. Consequently, the cell with NbB2/rGO/PP as a functional separator achieves a high discharge capacity of 873 mAh g-1 at 1C after 100 cycles. Moreover, the benefits of NbB2/rGO/PP can be effectively maintained even at a high sulfur loading of 7.06 mg cm-2 without significant reduction and with a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 8 μL mg-1s. This study enhances our understanding of the catalytic mechanism of Li-S systems and presents a promising approach for developing electrocatalysts that are resilient to poisoning.

Transparent-to-Brown-Black Patterned Electrochromic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit promising electrochromic (EC) performance owing to their porous structure, regular channel, and tunable component characteristics. However, few reports focus on MOF materials with the EC performance of a transparent to brown-black (neutral colored state) change that is more suitable for smart windows. In this work, we proposed a strategy for synthesizing MOF (named Ni-BPY) EC materials and corresponding films fabricated via a low-cost electrostatic spray deposition technique. The obtained film exhibits excellent EC performance with a neutral color change from transparent to brown-black, a large optical modulation of 70% at 430 nm, and a fast response within 10 s. Benefiting from good electrical and chemical stability, the Ni-BPY film can be cycled over 500 times. Notably, the Ni-BPY MOF film also delivers a stepwise-controlled process during the bleached state due to its porous characteristics. In addition, the unique color variation of the Ni-BPY film derives from the redox reaction of the Ni metal node between Ni2+ and Ni3+, which is verified by the in situ potential-dependent Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement. As a proof of application, the patterned Ni-BPY EC films and devices are additionally constructed to demonstrate their potential application in electronic tags and logo displays.

Li iontronics in single-crystalline T-Nb2O5 thin films with vertical ionic transport channels

The niobium oxide polymorph T-Nb2O5 has been extensively investigated in its bulk form especially for applications in fast-charging batteries and electrochemical (pseudo)capacitors. Its crystal structure, which has two-dimensional (2D) layers with very low steric hindrance, allows for fast Li-ion migration. However, since its discovery in 1941, the growth of single-crystalline thin films and its electronic applications have not yet been realized, probably due to its large orthorhombic unit cell along with the existence of many polymorphs. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline T-Nb2O5 thin films, critically with the ionic transport channels oriented perpendicular to the film's surface. These vertical 2D channels enable fast Li-ion migration, which we show gives rise to a colossal insulator-metal transition, where the resistivity drops by 11 orders of magnitude due to the population of the initially empty Nb 4d0 states by electrons. Moreover, we reveal multiple unexplored phase transitions with distinct crystal and electronic structures over a wide range of Li-ion concentrations by comprehensive in situ experiments and theoretical calculations, which allow for the reversible and repeatable manipulation of these phases and their distinct electronic properties. This work paves the way for the exploration of novel thin films with ionic channels and their potential applications.

Selective Electrochromic Regulation for Near-Infrared and Visible Light via Porous Tungsten Oxide Films with Core/Shell Architecture

Dual-band electrochromic smart windows have become a research hotspot owing to their unique ability to selectively control near-infrared (NIR) and visible (VIS) light. However, the design and exploitation of dual-band electrochromic films are still an extreme challenge due to the scarcity of relevant high-performance materials. To solve this issue, we here proposed a type of porous WO₃ film with nanowires/nanoparticles core/shell architecture as a promising candidate, endowing smart windows with a dual-band electrochromic feature. Moreover, the mechanism of the dual-band electrochromism is illustrated by the response of the transmittance spectra in Li⁺-based or TBA⁺-based electrolytes to distinguish the electrochemical behavior and the cyclic voltammetry to determine the degree of diffusion-limited kinetics. Our results indicate that the dual-band electrochromic performance is credited to the progressive electrochemical reduction procedure, in which the capacitive charging process gives rise to NIR regulation and the following ion intercalation contributes to VIS light modulation. Furthermore, we develop a dual-band electrochromic energy storage prototype device utilizing the porous WO₃ film. This work describes a judicious strategy for designing dual-band electrochromic films, promoting the evolution of dual-band electrochromic technology.

Anion Defects Engineering of Ternary Nb-Based Chalcogenide Anodes Toward High-Performance Sodium-Based Dual-Ion Batteries

Highlights

We developed an efficient and extensible strategy to produce the single-phase ternary NbSSe nanohybrids with defect-enrich microstructure. The anionic-Se doping play a key role in effectively modulating the electronic structure and surface chemistry of NbS2 phase, including the increased interlayers distance (0.65 nm), the enhanced intrinsic electrical conductivity (3.23 × 103 S m-1) and extra electroactive defect sites. The NbSSe/NC composite as anode exhibits rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics and increased capacitance behavior for Na+ storage, resulting in high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries (SDIBs) have gained tremendous attention due to their virtues of high operating voltage and low cost, yet it remains a tough challenge for the development of ideal anode material of SDIBs featuring with high kinetics and long durability. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of N-doped carbon film-modified niobium sulfur–selenium (NbSSe/NC) nanosheets architecture, which holds favorable merits for Na+ storage of enlarged interlayer space, improved electrical conductivity, as well as enhanced reaction reversibility, endowing it with high capacity, high-rate capability and high cycling stability. The combined electrochemical studies with density functional theory calculation reveal that the enriched defects in such nanosheets architecture can benefit for facilitating charge transfer and Na+ adsorption to speed the electrochemical kinetics. The NbSSe/NC composites are studied as the anode of a full SDIBs by pairing the expanded graphite as cathode, which shows an impressively cyclic durability with negligible capacity attenuation over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, as well as an outstanding energy density of 230.6 Wh kg−1 based on the total mass of anode and cathode.

Robust and stable dual-band electrochromic smart window with multicolor tunability

Dual-band electrochromic smart windows (DESWs) can selectively control the transmittance of near-infrared (NIR) and visible (VIS) light, which can significantly reduce building energy consumption. However, almost all the reported DESW colors switch between clear colorless and dark blue. The single color combined with the dazzling visual experience of blue will undoubtedly limit the application scene of DESWs. Herein, for the first time, we report a robust and stable DESW with multicolor conversion capabilities based on the single-component organic polymer polyaniline (PANI). The results show that the progressive electrochemical reaction enabled PANI film to deliver not only efficient and independent control of NIR and VIS light transmittance but also impressive electrochromic performance-rich color conversion (yellow-green-black), good optical modulation (65% at 633 nm and 59% at 1600 nm), high coloration efficiency (367.1 cm² C^-1 at 633 nm and 299.6 cm² C^-1 at 1600 nm), and excellent cycling stability (optical modulation losses of 6% at 633 nm, and 4% at 1600 nm after 10 000 cycles). Thereby, we demonstrated a prototype PANI-based DESW device (10 × 5 cm²), which delivered a multicolor electrochromism together with independent control and modulation of the VIS (sunlight) and NIR (solar heat) transmittance.

Controlling the Shape Anisotropy of Monoclinic Nb12O29 Nanocrystals Enables Tunable Electrochromic Spectral Range

Electrochromic smart windows that modulate the solar transmittance in a wide and selective spectral range can optimize building energy efficiency. However, for conventional materials such as bulk transition metal oxides, the electrochromic spectral range is constrained by their crystal structure with limited tunability. Herein, we report a method to control the shape anisotropy of monoclinic Nb₁₂O₂₉ nanocrystals and obtain a tunable electrochromic spectral range. We demonstrate the synthesis of monoclinic Nb₁₂O₂₉ nanorods (NRs), extending one-dimensionally along the b direction, and monoclinic Nb₁₂O₂₉ nanoplatelets (NPLs), extending two-dimensionally along the b and c directions. Upon electrochemical reduction accompanied by Li insertion, the NR films show increasing absorbance mostly in the near infrared region. In contrast, the NPL films show increasing absorbance in the near infrared region first followed by increasing absorbance in both visible and near infrared regions. To elucidate the influence of shape anisotropy, we used density functional theory to construct the lithiated structures of monoclinic Nb₁₂O₂₉ and in these structures we identified the presence of square planar sites and crystallographic shear sites for Li insertion. By calculating the theoretical spectra of the lithiated structures, we demonstrate that the Li insertion into the square planar sites results in absorption in the near infrared region in both NRs and NPLs due to their extension in the b direction, while the subsequent insertion of Li into the crystallographic shear sites leads to absorption in both visible and near infrared regions, which only occurs in NPLs due to their extension in the c direction.

Thymoquinone loading into hydroxyapatite/alginate scaffolds accelerated the osteogenic differentiation of the mesenchymal stem cells

Background

Phytochemical agents such as thymoquinone (TQ) have osteogenic property. This study aimed to investigate the synergic impact of TQ and hydroxyapatite on mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. Alginate was also used as drug vehicle.

Methods

HA scaffolds were fabricated by casting into polyurethane foam and sintering at 800 °C, and then, 1250 °C and impregnated by TQ containing alginate. The adipose-derived stem cells were aliquoted into 4 groups: control, osteogenic induced-, TQ and osteogenic induced- and TQ-treated cultures. Adipose derived-mesenchymal stem cells were mixed with alginate and loaded into the scaffolds

Results

The results showed that impregnation of HA scaffold with alginate decelerated the degradation rate and reinforced the mechanical strength. TQ loading in alginate/HA had no significant influence on physical and mechanical properties. Real-time RT-PCR showed significant elevation in collagen, osteopontin, and osteocalcin expression at early phase of differentiation. TQ also led to an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity. At long term, TQ administration had no impact on calcium deposition and proliferation rate as well as bone-marker expression.

Conclusion

TQ accelerates the differentiation of the stem cells into the osteoblasts, without changing the physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds. TQ also showed a synergic influence on differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells.

Formation and growth mechanism for niobium oxide nanoparticles: atomistic insight from in situ X-ray total scattering

Understanding the mechanisms for nanoparticle nucleation and growth is crucial for the development of tailormade nanomaterials. Here, we use X-ray total scattering and Pair Distribution Function analysis to follow the formation and growth of niobium oxide nanoparticles. We study the solvothermal synthesis from niobium chloride in benzyl alcohol, and through investigations of the influence of reaction temperature, a formation pathway can be suggested. Upon dissolution of niobium chloride in benzyl alcohol, octahedral [NbCl6-xOx] complexes form through exchange of chloride ligands. Heating of the solution results in polymerization, where larger clusters built from multiple edge-sharing [NbCl6-xOx] octahedra assemble. This leads to the formation of a nucleation cluster with the ReO3 type structure, which grows to form nanoparticles of the Wadsley-Roth type H-Nb2O5 structure, which in the bulk phase usually only forms at high temperature. Upon further growth, structural defects appear, and the presence of shear-planes in the structure appears highly dependent on nanoparticle size.
