Abstract
Ongoing research exploring the chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) has led to the development and discovery of new NHC subclasses that deviate beyond Arduengo’s prototypical N,N′-disubstituted imidazol-2-ylidene-based structures. These systems continue to enable and extend the fundamental role of NHC ligands in synthesis and catalysis. In this regard, the advent of protic NHCs has garnered particular interest. This derives in part from their applications to the selective preparation of unique molecular scaffolds and their unprecedented bifunctional reactivity, which can be exploited in transition metal-catalyzed processes. In comparison, the synthetic applications of closely related anionic naked NHCs remain rather underexplored. With this in mind, this review highlights the interesting fundamental properties of non-classical anionic naked NHCs, and focuses on their emerging applications in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
The mechanism of the addition of indazole (Ind)-a bifunctional aromatic N,NH-nucleophile-to cyclohexyl isocyanide coordinated to the palladium(II) center in the model complex cis-[PdCl₂(CNMe)(CNCy)] (1) to give the corresponding aminocarbene ligand was investigated in detail by theoretical (DFT) methods. The most plausible mechanism of this reaction is that of the associative type involving nucleophilic attack of Ind by its unprotonated N atom at the isocyanide carbon atom followed by the stepwise proton transfer from the nucleophile molecule to the isocyanide N atom via deprotonation/protonation steps. Two reaction channels based on two tautomeric forms of indazole were found. The channel leading to the experimentally isolated aminocarbene product is based on the less stable tautomeric form. Another channel based on the more stable tautomer of Ind is slightly kinetically more favorable but it is endergonic. Thus, the regioselectivity of this reaction is thermodynamically rather than kinetically driven. The bonding situation in key species was analyzed.

Abstract
Abstract
The reaction of bis(isocyanide)palladium complex cis-[PdCl2(CNXyl)2] (Xyl=2,6-Me2C6H3) with excess of 4,5-dichlorobenzene-1,2-amine in a C2H4Cl2/MeOH mixture affords monocationic bis(diaminocarbene) complex cis-[PdClC{(NHXyl)=NHC6H2Cl2
NH2}{C(NHXyl)=NHC6H2Cl2NH2}]Cl (3) in moderate yield (42%). Complex 3 exists in the solid phase in the H-bonded dimeric associate of two single charged organometallic cations and two chloride anions according to X-ray diffraction data. The Hirshfeld surface analysis for the X-ray structure of 3 reveals that the crystal packing is determined primarily by intermolecular contacts H–Cl, H–H, and H–C. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds N–H···Cl and C–H···Cl in the H-bonded dimeric associate of 3 were studied by DFT calculations and topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of QTAIM method, and estimated energies of these supramolecular contacts vary from 1.6 to 9.1 kcal/mol. Such non-covalent bonding means that complex 3 is an anionic receptor for the chloride anions.

Abstract
This work describes the preparation of a series of platinum-aminocarbene complexes [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b ))=N(H)R1}(CNR1)] a-b (8-19, 65-75% isolated yield) via the reaction of cis-[PtCl2(CNR1)2] (R1 = Cy 1, t-Bu 2, Xyl 3, 2-Cl-6-MeC6H3 4) with 3-iminoisoindolin-1-ones HN=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b H) (R2-R5 = H 5; R3 = Me, R2, R4, R5 = H 6; R3, R4 = Cl, R2, R5 = H 7). New complexes 17-19 were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), ESI+-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), one-dimensional (1H, 13C{1H}), and two-dimensional (1H,1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (HMQC)/1H,13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC)) NMR spectroscopy, and authenticity of known species 8-16 was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR. Complexes 8-19 were assessed as catalysts for hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes with hydrosilanes to give vinyl silanes, and complex [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6H3(5-Me)CON b ))=N(H)(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}{CN(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}] a-b (18) showed the highest catalytic activity. The catalytic system proposed operates at 80-100 °C for 4-6 h in toluene and with catalyst loading of 0.1 mol %, enabling the reaction of a number of terminal alkynes (PhC≡CH, t-BuC≡CH, and 4-(t-Bu)C6H4C≡CH) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, Pr3SiH, i-Pr3SiH, and PhMe2SiH). Target vinyl silanes were prepared in 48-95% yields (as a mixture of α/β isomers) and with maximum turnover number of 8.4 × 103. Hydrosilylation of internal alkynes (PhC≡CPh, Me(CH2)2C≡C(CH2)2Me, and PhC≡CMe) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, PhMe2SiH) led to the corresponding trisubstituted silylated alkenes in 86-94% yields. Initial observations on the mechanism of the catalytic action of platinum-ADC catalysts 8-19 suggested a molecular catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Despite the long history of the investigation of nucleophilic addition to metal-bound isocyanides, some important aspects of the reaction mechanism remain unclear even for the simplest systems. In this work, the addition of the sp³-N, sp²-N, and mixed sp²/sp³-N nucleophiles (i.e., HNMe₂, HN=CPh₂, and H₂N-N=CPh₂, respectively) to isocyanides C≡NR coordinated to the platinum(II) centers in the complexes cis-[Pt(C≡NCy)(2-pyz)(dppe)]⁺ (2-pyz = 2-pyrazyl, dmpe = Me₂PCH₂CH₂PMe₂) and cis-[PtCl₂(C≡NXyl)(C≡NMe)] was studied in detail by theoretical (DFT) methods. The mechanism of these reactions is stepwise associative rather than concerted and it includes the addition of a nucleophile to the isocyanide C atom, deprotonation of the nucleophilic moiety in the resulting intermediate, and protonation of the isocyanide N atom to give the final product. The calculated activation energy (ΔG≠) of all reactions is in the range of 19.8-22.4 kcal/mol.

Abstract
We have applied in situ monitoring of mechanochemical reactions by high-energy synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction to study the role of liquid additives on the mechanochemical synthesis of the archetypal metal-organic framework (MOF) HKUST-1, which was one of the first and is still among the most widely investigated MOF materials to be synthesized by solvent-free procedures. It is shown here how the kinetics and mechanisms of the mechanochemical synthesis of HKUST-1 can be influenced by milling conditions and additives, yielding on occasion two new and previously undetected intermediate phases containing a mononuclear copper core, and that finally rearrange to form the HKUST-1 architecture. On the basis of in situ data, we were able to tune and direct the milling reactions toward the formation of these intermediates, which were isolated and characterized by spectroscopic and structural means and their magnetic properties compared to those of HKUST-1. The results have shown that despite the relatively large breadth of analysis available for such widely investigated materials as HKUST-1, in situ monitoring of milling reactions can help in the detection and isolation of new materials and to establish efficient reaction conditions for the mechanochemical synthesis of porous MOFs.

Abstract
Metal-bound isocyanides demonstrate a very rich chemistry towards 1,3-dipoles of the allyl anion type such as nitrones. Depending on the metal centre, dipole nature and substituent in isocyanides, cycloadducts, imine + isocyanates or metallacycles may be formed. In this work, the reasons for such diversity, intimate details of the reaction mechanism and main factors determining the chemoselectivity in the reaction between Au(iii)-bound isocyanides ([AuCl3(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]NR)]) and cyclic nitrones -O-N[combining low line]+[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)XXX[combining low line] (XXX = CH2CH2CMe2, CH2CH2CH2, OCH2CMe2, CH2OCMe2 and CH2CH2O) are analysed in detail by theoretical (DFT) methods. The formation of cycloadducts is controlled by the LUMOπ*(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N) of isocyanides and it occurs in a stepwise manner via the initial nucleophilic addition of nitrone at the C atom of C[triple bond, length as m-dash]NR (except for nitronate -O-N[combining low line]+[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)CH2CH2O[combining low line]). The imine + isocyanate products are formed upon oxygen transfer from nitrones to isocyanides, and N-O bond cleavage is the main factor determining this process. A metallacycle is formed upon decomposition of the cycloadduct, and this process includes deprotonation of the oxadiazoline CH group/N-O bond cleavage and Cl- elimination/cyclization. The main factor controlling the metallacycle formation is the acidity of the endocyclic CH group in the cycloadduct. Effects of the substituent R in C[triple bond, length as m-dash]NR and the nitrone nature on the reactivity are analysed.

Abstract
The scope and limitations of the isonitrile-based NHC template synthesis were investigated with a series of precursors containing a nucleophilic amine in combination with tethered electrophiles. In the case of alkynes and phosphonic esters as electrophiles no ring closure was observed and new functionalized NAC gold complexes were obtained. By the use of unsaturated esters and phosphonic esters as Michael acceptors in the amine precursors, ester-modified gold and palladium NHC complexes were accessible in high efficiency.

Abstract
In the title compound, [PdCl2(C15H11NO3)2]·CHCl3, the Pd(II) atom adopts a slightly distorted square-planar coordination geometry composed of two Cl atoms in cis positions and two C atoms from isocyano-phenyl ligands. The mol-ecular conformation is stabilized by π-π stacking inter-actions [shortest centroid-centroid distance = 3.600 (1) Å] between substituted benzene rings of different ligands. The crystal packing is characterized by C-H⋯O and C-H⋯Cl inter-actions involving the chloro-form solvent mol-ecules.

Abstract
The chemistry of heterocyclic carbenes has experienced a rapid development over the last years. In addition to the imidazolin-2-ylidenes, a large number of cyclic diaminocarbenes with different ring sizes have been described. Aside from diaminocarbenes, P-heterocyclic carbenes, and derivatives with only one, or even no heteroatom within the carbene ring are known. New methods for the synthesis of complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands such as the oxidative addition or the metal atom template controlled cyclization of beta-functionalized isocyanides have been developed recently. This review summarizes the new developments regarding the synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbenes and their metal complexes.

Abstract
Oxidative insertion of [Pd(PPh3)4] or [Ni(cod)2]/PPh3 into the C-Cl bond of various 2-chloroimidazolinium- and other -amidinium salts affords metal-diaminocarbene complexes in good to excellent yields. This procedure is complementary to existing methodology in which the central metal does not change its oxidation state, and therefore allows to incorporate carbene fragments that are difficult to access otherwise. The preparation of a variety of achiral as well as enantiomerically pure, chiral metal-NHC complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and metal complexes with acyclic diaminocarbene ligands illustrates this aspect. Furthermore it is shown that oxidative insertion also paves a way to prototype Fischer carbenes of Pd(II). Since the required starting materials are readily available from urea- or thiourea derivatives, this novel approach allows for substantial structural variations of the ligand backbone. The catalytic performance of the resulting library of nickel- and palladium-carbene complexes has been evaluated by applications to prototype Suzuki-, Heck-, and Kumada-Corriu cross-coupling reactions as well as Buchwald-Hartwig aminations. It was found that even Fischer carbenes show appreciable catalytic activity. Moreover, representative examples of all types of neutral and cationic metal-carbene complexes formed in this study have been characterized by X-ray crystallography.
