Abstract
Nowadays, nanotechnology represents a well-established approach, suitable for designing, producing, and applying materials to a broad range of advanced sectors. In this context, the use of well-suited "nano" approaches accounted for a big step forward in conferring optimized flame-retardant features to such a cellulosic textile material as cotton, considering its high ease of flammability, yearly production, and extended use. Being a surface-localized phenomenon, the flammability of cotton can be quite simply and effectively controlled by tailoring its surface through the deposition of nano-objects, capable of slowing down the heat and mass transfer from and to the textile surroundings, which accounts for flame fueling and possibly interacting with the propagating radicals in the gas phase. In this context, the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach has definitively demonstrated its reliability and effectiveness in providing cotton with enhanced flame-retardant features, through the formation of fully inorganic or hybrid organic/inorganic nanostructured assemblies on the fabric surface. Therefore, the present work aims to summarize the current state of the art related to the use of nanostructured LbL architectures for cotton flame retardancy, offering an overview of the latest research outcomes that often highlight the multifunctional character of the deposited assemblies and discussing the current limitations and some perspectives.

Abstract
In this study, eco-friendly cotton fabrics with antimicrobial and flame-retardant properties were produced using newly developed bioactive formulations. The new natural formulations combine the biocidal properties of the biopolymer (chitosan (CS)) and essential oil (thyme oil) (EO) with the flame-retardant properties of mineral fillers (silica (SiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and hydrotalcite (LDH)). The modified cotton eco-fabrics were analyzed in terms of morphology (optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), color (spectrophotometric measurements), thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)), biodegradability, flammability (micro-combustion calorimetry (MCC)), and antimicrobial characteristics. The antimicrobial activity of the designed eco-fabrics was determined against different kinds of microorganism (S. aureus, E. coli, P. fluorescens, B. subtilis, A. niger, C. albicans). The antibacterial effects and flammability of the materials were found to depend strongly on the compositions of the bioactive formulation. The best results were obtained for the samples of fabric coated with the formulations containing LDH and TiO2 filler. These samples showed the highest decreases in flammability, with heat release rate (HRR) values of 168 (W/g) and 139 (W/g), respectively, compared to the reference (233 W/g). The samples also showed very good inhibition of growth against of all the studied bacteria.

Abstract
In this report, a unique methodology/process steps were followed using Sol-gel-based concept to deposit thin flame-retardant coatings on cotton fabric. Surface microstructure and compositional analysis of the coated cotton were carried out using scanning electronic microscope (SEM), which explored significant coverage of the fabric. The obtained samples were further analyzed through rupturing mechanism test and color check. Compositional investigation of the coated samples was carried through Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and energy-dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Thermal analyses were carried out through Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Vertical flame tests (VFT), which suggested higher resistance of the coatings obtained for 5 h and zero heat-treatment time on the cotton fabric. A 28.86% char residue was obtained for the same sample (ET-5h-RT) coupled with higher degradation temperature and excellent combustion properties.

Abstract
Surface-engineered coatings have been increasingly applied to functionalize fabrics due to the ease of deposition of the coatings and their effectiveness in endowing the fabric with abundant properties. Among the surface modification methods, layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly has emerged as an important approach for creating multifunctional surfaces on fabrics. In this review, bibliometric analysis with the visualization analysis of LbL self-assembly coatings on fabrics was performed on publications extracted from the Web of Science (WOS) from 2005 to 2021 based on the CiteSpace software. The analysis results showed that research on LbL self-assembly coatings on fabrics has attracted much attention, and this technique has plentiful and flexible applications. Moreover, research on the LbL self-assembly method in the field of functionalization of fabrics has been summarized, which include flame retardant fabric, antibacterial fabric, ultraviolet resistant fabric, hydrophobic fabric and electromagnetic shielding fabric. It was found that the functionalization of the fabric has been changing from singularity to diversification. Based on the review, several future research directions can be proposed. The weatherability, comfort, cost and environmental friendliness should be considered when the multifunctional coatings are designed.

Abstract
This review provides an intensive overview of flame retardant coating systems. The occurrence of flame due to thermal degradation of the polymer substrate as a result of overheating is one of the major concerns. Hence, coating is the best solution to this problem as it prevents the substrate from igniting the flame. In this review, the descriptions of several classifications of coating and their relation to thermal degradation and flammability were discussed. The details of flame retardants and flame retardant coatings in terms of principles, types, mechanisms, and properties were explained as well. This overview imparted the importance of intumescent flame retardant coatings in preventing the spread of flame via the formation of a multicellular charred layer. Thus, the intended intumescence can reduce the risk of flame from inherently flammable materials used to maintain a high standard of living.

Abstract
Nanoarchitectonics approaches can produce functional materials from tiny units through combination of various processes including atom/molecular manipulation, chemical conversion, self-assembly/self-organization, microfabrication, and bio-inspired procedures. Existing fabrication approaches can be regarded as fitting into the same concept. In particular, the so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method has huge potential for preparing applicable materials with a great variety of assembling mechanisms. LbL assembly is a multistep process where different components can be organized in planned sequences while simple alignment options provide access to superstructures, for example helical structures, and anisotropies which are important aspects of nanoarchitectonics. In this article, newly-featured examples are extracted from the literature on LbL assembly discussing trends for composite functional materials according to (i) principles and techniques, (ii) composite materials, and (iii) applications. We present our opinion on the present trends, and the prospects of LbL assembly. While this method has already reached a certain maturity, there is still plenty of room for expanding its usefulness for the fabrication of nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices.

Abstract
In recent years, tissue engineering has emerged as a promising approach to address limitations of organ transplantation. The ultimate goal of tissue engineering is to provide scaffolds that closely mimic the physicochemical and biological cues of native tissues' extracellular matrix. In this endeavor, new generation of scaffolds have been designed that utilize the incorporation of signaling molecules in order to improve cell recruitment, enhance angiogenesis, exert healing activities, and increase the engraftment of the scaffolds. Among different signaling molecules, the role of erythropoietin (EPO) in regenerative medicine is increasingly being appreciated. It is a biological macromolecule which can prevent programed cell death, modulate inflammation, induce cell proliferation, and provide tissue protection in different disease models. In this review, we have outlined and critically analyzed different techniques of scaffolds' modification with EPO or EPO-loaded nanoparticles. We have also explored different strategies for the incorporation of EPO into scaffolds. Non-hematopoietic functions of EPO have also been discussed. Finalizing with detailed discussion surrounding the applications, challenges, and future perspectives of EPO-modified scaffolds in regenerative medicine.

Abstract
In 2020, the world is being ravaged by the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which causes a severe respiratory disease, Covid-19. Hundreds of thousands of people have succumbed to the disease. Efforts at curing the disease are aimed at finding a vaccine and/or developing antiviral drugs. Despite these efforts, the WHO warned that the virus might never be eradicated. Countries around the world have instated non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing and wearing of masks in public to curb the spreading of the disease. Antiviral polysaccharides provide the ideal opportunity to combat the pathogen via pharmacotherapeutic applications. However, a layer-by-layer nanocoating approach is also envisioned to coat surfaces to which humans are exposed that could harbor pathogenic coronaviruses. By coating masks, clothing, and work surfaces in wet markets among others, these antiviral polysaccharides can ensure passive prevention of the spreading of the virus. It poses a so-called "eradicate-in-place" measure against the virus. Antiviral polysaccharides also provide a green chemistry pathway to virus eradication since these molecules are primarily of biological origin and can be modified by minimal synthetic approaches. They are biocompatible as well as biodegradable. This surface passivation approach could provide a powerful measure against the spreading of coronaviruses.

Abstract
Phytic acid (PA), as a natural source of phosphorus, was immobilized on cotton (CO) in a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach with polyvinylamine (PVAm) as the oppositely charged electrolyte to create a partly bio-based flame-retardant finish. PVAm was employed as a synthetic nitrogen source with the highest density of amine groups of all polymers. Vertical flame tests revealed a flame-retardant behavior with no afterflame and afterglow time for a coating of 15 bilayers (BL) containing 2% phosphorus and 1.4% nitrogen. The coating achieved a molar P:N ratio of 3:5. Microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) analyses affirmed the flame test findings by a decrease in peak heat release rate (pkHRR) by more than 60% relative to unfinished CO. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and MCC measurements exhibited a shifted CO peak to lower temperatures indicating proceeding reactions to form an isolating char on the surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) coupled online with a TGA system, allowed the identification of a decreased amount of acrolein, methanol, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde during sample pyrolysis and a higher amount of released water. Thereby the toxicity of released volatiles was reduced. Our results prove that PA enables a different reaction by catalyzing cellulosic dehydration, which results in the formation of a protective char on the surface of the burned fabric.

Abstract
Surface-engineered coatings for the fire protection of cotton are being increasing used thanks to the ease of application of the coatings and their effectiveness in preventing flame propagation and improving resistance to irradiative heat flux exposure. Two main approaches have been extensively investigated, namely sol-gel derived coatings and layer-by-layer assemblies. These approaches are both capable of providing treated fabrics with outstanding flame-retardant features. Notwithstanding, according to the composition of the sol-gel recipes and the type of deposited layers, it is possible to design multifunctional (for example hydrophobic and electrically conductive) treatments. This review aims at discussing recent advances with respect to both strategies, highlighting current limitations, open challenges, and possible advances.

Abstract
A novel linear α, ω-di (chloro phosphoramide)-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (CPN-PDMS) was successfully synthesized and utilized as a formaldehyde-free water-repellent and flame-retardant for cotton fabrics. The flame retardancy of treated cotton fabrics was estimated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical flammability test, and cone calorimetry test. The cotton fabrics treated with 350 g/L CPN-PDMS obtained excellent flame retardancy with an LOI value of 30.6% and the char length was only 4.3 cm. Combustion residues were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis. Results show that CPN-PDMS can effectively enhance water repellency and fire resistance of cotton fabrics. Furthermore, the breaking strength test and the whiteness test strongly prove that the tensile strength and whiteness of the treated cotton fabrics were slightly lower than that of the pure cotton fabrics. The wash stability test showed that after 30 laundering cycles, the treated cotton fabrics still had an LOI value of 28.5% and a water-repellent effect of grade 80, indicating that CPN-PDMS was an excellent washing durability additive. In summary, these property enhancements of treated cotton fabrics were attributed to the synergistic effect of silicon-phosphorus-nitrogen elements in CPN-PDMS.

Abstract
Clay/polymer nanocomposites (CPNs) are polymers incorporating refined clay particles that are frequently functionalized with quaternary ammonium cations (QACs) as dispersion aids. There is interest in commercializing CPNs for food contact applications because they have improved strength and barrier properties, but there are few studies on the potential for QACs in CPNs to transfer to foods under conditions of intended use. In this study, we manufactured low-density poly(ethylene) (LDPE)-based CPNs and assessed whether QACs can migrate into several food simulants under accelerated storage conditions. QACs were found to migrate to a fatty food simulant (ethanol) at levels of ∼1.1 μg mg-1 CPN mass after 10 days at 40 °C, constituting about 4% total migration (proportion of the initial QAC content in the CPN that migrated to the simulant). QAC migration into ethanol was ∼16× higher from LDPE containing approximately the same concentration of QACs but no clay, suggesting that most QACs in the CPN are tightly bound to clay particles and are immobile. Negligible QACs were found to migrate into aqueous, alcoholic, or acidic simulants from CPNs, and the amount of migrated QACs was also found to scale with the temperature and the initial clay concentration. The migration data were compared to a theoretical diffusion model, and it was found that the diffusion constant for QACs in the CPN was several orders of magnitude slower than predicted, which we attributed to the potential for QACs to migrate as dimers or other aggregates rather than as individual ions. Nevertheless, the use of the migration model resulted in a conservative estimate of the mass transfer of QAC from the CPN test specimens.

Abstract
A polyester fabric, coated with calcium alginate and nano-calcium borate composites (CAB-PL), was fabricated by a post-cross-linking method, with remarkable improvement of flame retardancy and thermal stability, as compared with the original polyester fabric (PL). The mechanical properties of CAB-PL and PL were studied, and characterizations and tests including Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimetry (CONE) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to evaluate the flame retardancy and thermostability. The test results of CAB-PL showed excellent mechanical strength and anti-dripping properties. In comparison with PL, TGA results indicate that the presence of surface-coated composites produced more char residue and can effectively inhibit the heat transmission, and the LOI value of CAB-PL was improved from 25 to 33. Moreover, CONE results show that 88.65% reduction of total smoke release (TSR) values was induced by the presence of CAB. In addition, the possible pyrolysis mechanisms for CAB-PL have been proposed based on the results of pyrolysis-gas chromatography⁻mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) analysis. The combined results can provide useful information for understanding the flame retardant mechanisms of alginates as well. In summary, polyester fabric was upgraded by coating it with the calcium alginate/nano-calcium borate, thus achieving extraordinary flame retardancy and thermal stability for various applications within the textile industry.

Abstract
In this Research Article, we report on the development of water-based flame retardant coating based on phospho-nitrogen combination for cotton fabrics. A one-step spray-on process was employed to coat the fabrics by taking advantage of the spontaneous reaction between para-phenylenediamine (PDA) and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) resulting in an instantaneous precipitation of poly[1,4-diaminophenylene-tris(dimethyl hydroxymethyl)phosphine] (PApP) on the fabric surface. The effectiveness of PApP in improving the flame retardant properties like ignition resistance and lateral flame spread were evaluated in accordance with ASTM D6413 and BS EN ISO 15025 flammability tests. Despite the early (thermal) decomposition onset for coated fabrics under both oxidative and pyrolytic conditions, remarkably, self-extinguishing behavior (<3 s) without any lateral flame spread was observed. Possible reaction scheme was also proposed to correlate flame retardant mechanism of the coated fabrics with the observations. Additional analysis via pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry and vertical flame testing before and after washing showed that flame retardant efficiency did decrease with washing, but the overall performance was still promising.

Abstract
This paper aims to develop a facile and single step method for the fabrication of superhydrophobic coating on cotton fabric. The coating has been prepared by using two silane trichloro(octadecyl)silane and (pentaflurophenyl)triethoxy silane by solution immersion technique. The wettability, surface topography and chemical compostion of the cotton fabric before and after treatment were charecterized by contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrum, respectively. Additionally, the functional group present in coating was analysed by FT-IR spectra. The coated fabric shows a contact angle of 172.9±3°, 169±3° and 167±3° for water, ethylene glycol and glycerol, respectively. The chemical stability of the coated sample has been evaluated by immersion of the sample in different pH solutions and different solvents, showing the excellent chemical stability of coating. Ultrasonication with water, detergent and petroleum ether, and water jet impact test reveals the mechanical stability of coating. The thermal stability of the coated fabric has been examined by annealing the sample at different temperature. Additionally, it shows resistance to stain and UV irradiation. Furthermore, the coated cotton fabric exhibits excellent self-cleaning and oil-water separation properties, which makes it suitable for industrial applications.

Abstract
To reduce fire hazards and expand high-value applications of lignocellulosic materials, thin films comprising graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) pre-adsorbed with alkali lignin were deposited by a Meyer rod process. Lightweight and highly flexible papers with increased gas impermeability were obtained by coating a protective layer of carbon nanomaterials in a randomly oriented and overlapped network structure. Assessment of the thermal and flammability properties of papers containing as low as 4 wt % carbon nanomaterials exhibited self-extinguishing behavior and yielded up to 83.5% and 87.7% reduction in weight loss and burning area, respectively, compared to the blank papers. The maximum burning temperature as measured by infrared pyrometry also decreased from 834 °C to 705 °C with the presence of flame retardants. Furthermore, papers coated with composites of GnPs and CNTs pre-adsorbed with lignin showed enhanced thermal stability and superior fire resistance than samples treated with either component alone. These outstanding flame-retardant properties can be attributed to the synergistic effects between GnPs, CNTs and lignin, enhancing physical barrier characteristics, formation of char and thermal management of the material. These results provide great opportunities for the development of efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable flame retardants.

Abstract
A flame retardant coating based on poly(allylamine) (PAH) and montmorillonite (MMT), deposited on polyamide 6 (PA6) sheets, is investigated. PA6-(PAH-MMT) at 40 bilayers was tested in a cone calorimeter and interrupted at different characteristic times. A possible mechanism of action of PA6 in the presence of layer-by-layer coating is proposed.
