Abstract
The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Abstract
Synthesis of a highly dispersed hydrophilic CdS nanocrystals and their use as fluorescence labeling for live cell imaging is reported here. By carefully manipulating the surface of CdS nanocrystals, the dispersions of CdS-MAA-PEI-FA nanocrystals with high photostability is prepared. The receptor-mediated delivery of folic acid conjugated quantum dots into folate-receptor-positive cell lines such as CBRH7919 liver cancer cells was demonstrated by confocal microscopy. In the future, the further modified CdS nanoparticles can be used for the tissue imaging in vivo studies.

Abstract
Optical-quality, melt processable thick films of a conjugated polymer blend containing poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-(phenylene vinylene)) (MEH-PPV), a C(60) derivative (PCBM) and a plasticizer (1,2-di-iso-octylphthalate) have been developed and their nonlinear absorption and optical limiting properties have been investigated. These blend materials exhibited strong optical limiting characteristics in the near infrared region (750-900 nm), with broad temporal dynamic range spanning femtosecond to nanosecond pulse widths. The dispersion of the optical limiting figure-of-merit of the MEH-PPV:PCBM:DOP blend shows a peak near the wavelength of the MEH-PPV cation, indicating an important role of one-photon and two-photon induced charge transfer in the nonlinear absorption response.

Abstract
The tuning of CdSe quantum dot (QDs) sizes, and consequently their corresponding two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section, has been systematically investigated. As the size (diameter) of the quantum dots increases, the TPA cross section is found to be empirically related via a power-law proportionality of 3.5+/-0.5 and 5.6+/-0.7 to the diameters of CdSe and CdTe QDs, respectively. The results are tentatively rationalized via a theoretical model of two-photon excitation properties in a system incorporating excitons and defects.

Abstract
A novel method for the synthesis of highly monodispersed hydrophillic InP-ZnS nanocrystals and their use as luminescence probes for live cell imaging is reported. Hydrophobic InP-ZnS nanocrystals are prepared by a new method that yields high-quality, luminescent core-shell nanocrystals within 6-8 h of total reaction time. Then by carefully manipulating the surface of these passivated nanocrystals, aqueous dispersions of folate-conjugated nanocrystals (folate-QDs) with high photostability are prepared. By use of confocal microscopy, we demonstrate the receptor-mediated delivery of folic acid conjugated quantum dots into folate-receptor-positive cell lines such as KB cells. These folate-QDs tend to accumulate in multi-vescicular bodies of KB cells after 6 h of incubation. Receptor-mediated delivery was confirmed by comparison with the uptake of these particles in folate-receptor-negative cell lines such as A549. Efficient two-photon excitation of these particles and two-photon imaging using these particles are also demonstrated. The use of these InP-ZnS nanoparticles and their efficient two-photon excitation can be potentially useful for deep tissue imaging for future in vivo studies.

Abstract
We report the observation of a strong two-photon induced fluorescence emission of Cy5-DNA within the tunable range of a Ti:Sapphire laser. The estimated two-photon cross-section for Cy5-DNA of 400GM is about 3.5-fold higher than it was reported for rhodamine B. The fundamental anisotropies of Cy5-DNA are close to the theoretical limits of 2/5 and 4/7 for one- and two-photon excitation, respectively. We also observed an enhanced two-photon induced fluorescence (TPIF) of Cy5-DNA deposited on silver island films (SIFs). In the presence of SIFs, the TPIF is about 100-fold brighter. The brightness increase of Cy5-DNA TPIF near SIFs is mostly due to enhanced local field.

Abstract
Photochemical and photophysical properties were investigated for poly(arylenevinylene)s containing a flexible biphenyl "hinge" unit by applying one-photon (OP) and two-photon (TP) excitation to explore excited-state properties. The poly(arylenevinylene)s were poly[(2,5-dihexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene)-alt-(4,4'-dihexyloxy-3,3'-biphenylenevinylene)] (1), poly[(2,5-dihexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene)-alt-(2,2'-dihexyloxy-3,3'-biphenylenevinylene)] (2), and poly[(2,5-dihexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene)-alt-(2,2'-biphenylenevinylene)] (3). Effective emission quantum yields and related photonic properties were evaluated on a realistic per-chromophore basis using effective conjugation lengths based on the Strickler-Berg relationship. Intramolecular photocyclization was deduced to occur in the one case where the biphenyl molecular connectivity permitted the reaction, based on matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF), heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence (HMQC)-NMR, and gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) results. The various photoprocesses could be induced by either OP or TP excitation, though the first excited singlet state is the photoactive state. The higher excitation energy of the TP excited state favors indirect population of the S, state by electronic coupling between the TP and OP excited states [lambda(max)TPE (nm): 726; delta (GM): 1=229, 2=215, 3= 109). Photochemical processes occurring from the lowest OP excited state (S1) could therefore also be indirectly induced by TP excitation.
