Abstract
Maytenus dhofarensis Sebsebe (Celestraceae) is a naturally growing shrub in Oman. It is not a reputed medicinal plant in Oman, but it is regionally endemic and causes shivering attacks on goats that graze on it. The chemical investigation of the hexane and chloroform extracts of the fruits and stems of M. dhofarensis afforded dihydro-β-agarofuran-type sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloid (1), lupanyl myristoate (2) and lignanolactone (3). Compounds (1-3) are new isolates from M. dhofarensis. The structures of these compounds were assigned through comprehensive IR, NMR, and ESI-MS analyses, and the relative configurations of compounds 1 and 3 were deduced from density function theory (DFT) calculations and NMR experiments. Compound 1 was assayed against the kinase enzyme and showed no inhibition activity for p38 alpha and delta at a 10 µM test concentration. Compound 3 inhibited the 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) by 69.5%, compared to 70.9% and 78.0% for gallic acid and butylated hydroxyanisole, respectively, which were used as positive controls.

Abstract
Medicinal plants are the chief components in the different oriental formulations in different traditional medical systems worldwide. As a thriving source of medicine, the medicinal plants with antituberculosis (TB) properties inspire the pharmacists to develop new drugs based on their active components or semimetabolites. In the present review, the anti-TB medicinal plants were screened from the scientific literatures, based on the botanical classification and the anti-TB activity. The obtained anti-TB medicinal plants were categorized into three different categories, viz., 159 plants critically examined with a total 335 isolated compounds, 131 plants with their crude extracts showing anti-TB activity, and 27 plants in literature with the prescribed formula by the traditional healers. Our systemic analysis on the medicinal plants can assist the discovery of novel and more efficacious anti-TB drugs.

Abstract
Twenty-nine dihydro-β-agarofuran-type sesquiterpenoids, including 17 new and 12 known compounds, were obtained from the seeds of Celastrus virens. The structures of the new isolates were characterized by spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction analysis. Among these, 20 sesquiterpenoids were evaluated for their multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal activity against the KB/VCR cell line. As a result, compounds 6 and 8 were found to exhibit MDR-reversal activity of more than 10-fold at a concentration of 2 μM, and the reversal fold (RF) ratios of compounds 19, 21, and 24 were >97.9 at a 20 μM nontoxic concentration level.

Abstract
A mixture of two compounds with potent antiplasmodial activity in vitro against the W2 strain of Plasmodium falciparum (half maximal inhibitory concentration, 1.12 μg/mL) was obtained in a previous investigation of the CH2Cl2-MeOH extract of the seeds of Salacia longipes var. camerunensis. Separation by column chromatography led now to the isolation of salaterpene E (1) and (1R,2R,4S,5S,6R,7R,9S,10R)-2-acetoxy-1,6,9-tribenzoyloxy-4-hydroxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran (2). The structure of 1 was elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, and its absolute configuration was established unambiguously by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Also the absolute configurations of the recently described salaterpenes A (2a) and D (2b) were determined by this method using the anomalous scattering of the oxygen atoms only.

Abstract
Four new (1–4), along with six known (5–10) dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpene polyesters were isolated from the whole plants of Parnassia wightiana. The new compounds were structurally elucidated through spectroscopic analysis including UV (Ultraviolet Spectrum), IR (Infrared Spectrum), 1H-NMR (1Hydrogen-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), 13C-NMR (13Carbon-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), DEPT (Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer), 1H-1H COSY (1H-1H Correlation Spectroscopy), HSQC (Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence), HMBC (Heteronuclear Multiple Bond Correlation), NOESY (Nuclear Overhauser Enhancement Spectroscopy) and HR-MS (High Resolution Mass Specttrum) and their absolute configurations were proposed by comparison of NOESY spectra and specific optical rotations with those of known compounds and biosynthesis grounds. Compound 2 is the first sesquiterpene alkaloid isolated from this plant. New compounds 1–4 exhibited some cytotoxic activities against NB4, MKN-45 and MCF-7 cells at 20 μM and of which 4 showed the highest activity against NB4 and MKN-45 cells with inhibition rates of 85.6% and 30.5%, respectively.

Abstract
Nine new β-dihydroagarofurans (1-9) and four new sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids (10-13) were isolated from the leaves of Maytenus spinosa. Their structures were determined mainly by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic studies. The absolute configuration of compound 6 was established using CD spectroscopy. Several derivatives (14-20) were prepared from the sesquiterpene 13. Most of the sesquiterpenoids were tested for anti-HIV activity, but only compound 1 was found to be active.

Abstract
Five new (4-8) and three known (1-3) dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpene polyesters were isolated from the whole plants of Parnassia wightiana. The structures of all compounds were elucidated through spectroscopic analysis including 2D-NMR and HR-MS. The absolute configuration of these compounds was established by X-ray diffraction analysis, comparison of NOESY spectra and biogenetic means. The cytotoxities of compounds 2-8 were evaluated in vitro against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A549, MCF-7 and SW480 cell lines. Compounds 5-7 exhibited the highest activities with IC₅₀ values of 11.8-30.1 μM in most cases. The SAR revealed that the introduction of hydroxyl group was able to significantly improve the activities of the compounds for most of the cell lines.

Abstract
Phytochemical investigation of the seeds of Salacia longipes var. camerunensis led to the isolation of four sesquiterpenoid derivatives, salaterpene A (1) (1α,2β,8β-triacetoxy-6β,9β-dibenzoyloxy-4β-hydroxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran), salaterpene B (2) (1α,2β,8β-triacetoxy-9β-benzoyloxy-6β-cinnamoyloxy-4β-hydroxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran), salaterpene C (3) (1α,2β-diacetoxy-6β,9β-dibenzoyloxy-4β-hydroxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran) and salaterpene D (4) (2β-acetoxy-1α,6β-dibenzoyloxy-4β-hydroxy-9β-nicotinoyloxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran) together with two known compounds (5 and 6). The structures of the compounds were established by means of NMR spectroscopy. Compounds 1-4 and 6 were tested in vitro for their antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine-resistant strain W2. All the tested compounds exhibited a moderate potency with IC50 below 2.7 μM.

Abstract
Swietenia macrophylla King (Meliaceae) is an endangered and medicinally important plant indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of the World. S. macrophylla has been widely used in folk medicine to treat various diseases. The review reveals that limonoids and its derivatives are the major constituents of S. macrophylla. There are several data in the literature indicating a great variety of pharmacological activities of S. macrophylla, which exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effects, antimutagenic, anticancer, antitumor and antidiabetic activities. Various other activities like anti-nociceptive, hypolipidemic, antidiarrhoeal, anti-infective, antiviral, antimalarial, acaricidal, antifeedant and heavy metal phytoremediation activity have also been reported. In view of the immense medicinal importance of S. macrophylla, this review aimed at compiling all currently available information on its ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry and biological activities of S. macrophylla, showing its importance.

Abstract
The n-hexane extract of Lovage root was found to significantly inhibit the growth of both Mycobacterium smegmatis mc²155 and Mycobacterium bovis BCG, and therefore a bioassay-guided isolation strategy was undertaken. (Z)-Ligustilide, (Z)-3-butylidenephthalide, (E)-3-butylidenephthalide, 3-butylphthalide, α-prethapsenol, falcarindiol, levistolide A, psoralen and bergapten were isolated by chromatographic techniques, characterized by NMR spectroscopy and MS, and evaluated for their growth inhibition activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H₃₇Rv using the whole-cell phenotypic spot culture growth inhibition assay (SPOTi). Cytotoxicity against RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells was employed for assessing their degree of selectivity. Falcarindiol was the most potent compound with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 20 mg/L against the virulent H₃₇Rv strain; however, it was found to be cytotoxic with a half-growth inhibitory concentration (GIC₅₀) in the same order of magnitude (SI < 1). Interestingly the sesquiterpene alcohol α-prethapsenol was found to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic mycobacteria with an MIC value of 60 mg/L, being more specific towards mycobacteria than mammalian cells (SI ~ 2). Colony forming unit analysis at different concentrations of this phytochemical showed mycobacteriostatic mode of action.

Abstract
Four new flavanones, cryptoflavanones A-D (1-4, resp.), together with eight known compounds, were isolated from the leaves of Cryptocarya chinensis. The structures of these new compounds were determined by spectral analyses. Among the isolated compounds, pinocembrin (5) and cryptocaryone (6) exhibited antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37) Rv strain in vitro with MIC values of 3.5 and 25.0 μg/ml, respectively.

Abstract
In the present study, we report four new dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpenes (1-4), which were isolated from the leaves of Celastrus vulcanicola, in addition to five derivatives (5-9). Their stereostructures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR techniques, X-ray studies, chemical correlations and biogenetic means. Compounds 1-9 and the previously reported sesquiterpenes 10-25 have been tested as potential antimycobacterial agents against sensitive and resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. 1α-Acetoxy-6β,9β-dibenzoyloxy-dihydro-β-agarofuran (20) exhibited antituberculosis activity against the MDR TB strain with a MIC value of 6.2 μg/mL, comparable to or better than isoniazid or rifampin, two of the best first-line drugs commonly used in the treatment of TB. The structure-activity relationship is discussed.

A new long-chain alkene, dotriacont-1-ene (1), was isolated from the leaves of Pourthiaea lucida, together with twelve known compounds. The structure of this new compound was determined by NMR and mass-spectrometric analyses. Among the isolated compounds, alpha-tocospiro A (2), alpha-tocopheryl quinone (4), and (E)-phytol (5) exhibited antituberculosis activities (MICs <or=30 microg/ml) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv in vitro.

Abstract
Six new phthalides, (S)-3-ethyl-7-hydroxy-6-methoxyphthalide (1), (S)-3-ethyl-7-hydroxy-5,6-dimethoxyphthalide (2), (S)-3-ethyl-5,6,7-trimethoxyphthalide (3), (R)-3-ethyl-7-hydroxy-6-methoxyphthalide (4), (Z)-3-ethylidene-7-hydroxy-6-methoxyphthalide (5), and (Z)-3-ethylidene-6,7-dimethoxyphthalide (6), have been isolated from the root of Pittosporum illicioides var. illicioides, together with seven known compounds. The structures of these new compounds were determined through spectroscopic and MS analyses. Compounds 1-4 exhibited inhibition (IC50<or=29.8 microM) of superoxide anion generation by human neutrophils in response to formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine/cytochalasin B (fMLP/CB). Compounds 5 and 6 inhibited fMLP/CB-induced elastase release with IC50 values of 38.6+/-4.3 and 33.9+/-3.9 microM, respectively.

Four new compounds, including two new dihydroagarofuranoid sesquiterpenes, 8-benzoyloxymutangin (1) and 15-acetoxyorbiculin G (2), a new lignan derivative, 9,9'- O-di-(Z)-feruloyl-(-)-secoisolariciresinol (3), and a new benzenoid, 5'-methoxyevofolin B (4), have been isolated from the stem of Microtropis japonica, together with 20 known compounds (5- 24). 3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (5) was identified from a natural source for the first time. The structures of these new compounds were determined through analyses of physical data. 15-Acetoxyorbiculin G (2), celahin C (6), and salasol A (7) exhibit antituberculosis activities (MICs < or = 39.6 microM) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H 37Rv in vitro.

Abstract
A chemical study on the seeds of Celastrus orbiculatus has led to the isolation of nine new (1- 9) and 13 known dihydro-beta-agarofuran derivatives. The identification and structural elucidation of the new compounds were based on spectroscopic data analysis, and the absolute configurations of compounds 1- 6, 8-10, and 16, as well as derivatives 2a and 6a, were determined by CD studies or by chemical methods. All compounds isolated were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against HL-60 human leukemia cells.

Abstract
Five new compounds, including two new phenylpropenoids, (R,E)-1-[4-(3-hydroxyprop-1-enyl)phenoxy]-3-methylbutane-2,3-diol (1) and 4-hydroxy-3-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)cinnamyl alcohol (2), two new bis(1-phenylethyl)phenols, 2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol (3) and 2,4-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol (4), and a new bisquinolinone alkaloid, 18-demethylparaensidimerin C (5), together with 17 known compounds have been isolated from the stem wood of Zanthoxylum integrifoliolum. The structures of these new compounds were determined through spectral analyses including extensive 2D nuclear magnetic resonance data. Among the isolates, N-methylflindersine (7), (-)-simulanol (10), and evofolin-C (16) exhibited potent inhibition against N-formylmethionylleucylphenylalanine-induced superoxide production with IC(50) values less than 12 microM.
