On the Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Tetramesityldigermene

Structures, Bonding Analyses and Reactivity of a Dicationic Digallene and Diindene Mimicking trans-bent Ditetrylenes

The reaction of bisdicyclohexylphosphinoethane (dcpe) and the subvalent MI sources [MI (PhF)2 ][pf] (M=Ga+ , In+ ; [pf]- =[Al(ORF )4 ]- ; RF =C(CF3 )3 ) yielded the salts [{M(dcpe)}2 ][pf]2 , containing the first dicationic, trans-bent digallene and diindene structures reported so far. The non-classical MI ⇆MI double bonds are surprisingly short and display a ditetrylene-like structure. The bonding situation was extensively analyzed by quantum chemical calculations, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and EDA-NOCV (Energy Decomposition Analysis with the combination of Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence) analyses and is compared to that in the isoelectronic and isostructural, but neutral digermenes and distannenes. The dissolved [{Ga(dcpe)}2 ]2+ ([pf]- )2 readily reacts with 1-hexene, cyclooctyne, diphenyldisulfide, diphenylphosphine and under mild conditions at room temperature. This reactivity is analyzed and rationalized.

Organogermanium Analogues of Alkenes, Alkynes, 1,3-Dienes, Allenes, and Vinylidenes

In this review, the latest achievements in the field of multiply bonded organogermanium derivatives, mostly reported within the last two decades, are presented. The isolable Ge-containing analogues of alkenes, alkynes, 1,3-dienes, allenes, and vinylidenes are discussed, and for each class of unsaturated organogermanium compounds, the most representative examples are given. The synthetic approaches toward homonuclear multiply bonded combinations solely consisting of germanium atoms, and their heteronuclear variants containing germanium and other group 14 elements, both acyclic and cyclic, are discussed. The peculiar structural features and nonclassical bonding nature of the abovementioned compounds are discussed based on their spectroscopic and structural characteristics, in particular their crystallographic parameters (double bond length, trans-bending at the doubly bonded centers, and twisting about the double bond). The prospects for the practical use of the title compounds in synthetic and catalytic fields are also briefly discussed.

A series of (E)-1,2-diaryldigermenes incorporating bulky Eind groups: structural characteristics and absorption properties

A series of (E)-1,2-diaryldigermenes, (Eind)ArGeGeAr(Eind) [Ar = phenyl (2), thiophen-2-yl (3), 9,9-dimethyl-2-fluorenyl (4) and 2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl (5)], supported by the fused-ring bulky 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octaethyl-s-hydrindacen-4-yl (Eind) groups, have been obtained as yellow-orange to red crystalline solids by the reaction of 1,2-dibromodigermene, (Eind)BrGeGeBr(Eind) (1), with ArLi. In the crystals of 2-5, the digermene cores show a flexible nature adopting a trans-bent geometry with the trans-bent angles (θ) between the Ge-Ge vector and the C_Eind-Ge-C_Ar plane of 34.04(12)° (2), 38.3(3)° and 38.8(3)° (3), 33.69(12)° (4) and 39.30(13)° (5). In the UV-vis spectra, strong π-π* absorptions have been observed with an absorption maximum at 451 nm (ε = 1.3 × 10⁴) (2), 455 nm (ε = 9.7 × 10³) (3), 480 nm (ε = 1.3 × 10⁴) (4) and 497 nm (ε = 1.4 × 10⁴) (5), retaining the GeGe double bond in solution. The absorption data and DFT calculations provide evidence for the intrinsic π-conjugation between the GeGe chromophore and aromatic rings involving the narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gaps (ΔE) with the extension of the carbon π-electron systems.

Facile Reduction of Phosphine Oxides and <i>H</i>-Phosphonates by Ditetrelenes

The addition of secondary phosphine oxides to tetramesityldisilene and -digermene results in the mild, partial reduction of the P(V) centre of the organophosphorus oxide to P(III) to yield disilyl and digermyl phosphinite derivatives and illustrates the potential of ditetrelenes to serve as mild reducing agents under ambient conditions. An analogous reaction happens with <i>H</i>-phosphonates. Mechanistic experiments, including deuterium-labelling, kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and variable time normalization analysis (VTNA) experiments, reveal that the 1,3-PH addition likely proceeds through a stepwise reaction pathway with the organophosphorus oxide acting as the nucleophile towards the ditetrelene. Furthermore, a facile exchange between the R₂PO- moiety on the digermylphosphinite with the R₂PO moiety of phosphine oxides was discovered and likely proceeds through a direct substitution mechanism.

NH bond activation of ammonia and amines by ditetrelenes: key insights into the stereochemistry of nucleophilic addition

The NH bond activation of ammonia, primary and secondary amines by tetramesityldisilene and -digermene was investigated. In each case, a disilyl- or digermylamine was formed as the only product of amine addition. The mechanism of the addition of ammonia to tetramesityldisilene was computed and revealed a three-step reaction pathway: formation of the anti-ammonia-disilene adduct, inversion at the β-silicon, and syn-transfer of the proton to give the syn-product, where each step follows a distinct stereochemical course. Examination of the reaction landscape also revealed several additional insights: (a) that, in the initial step, the formation of the anti-oriented zwitterionic intermediate is kinetically more preferable than formation of the syn-oriented zwitterionic intermediate, (b) that intermolecular transfer of a proton is not energetically feasible in non-polar solvents, and (c) that the bulk of the substituents can have a profound effect on the stereochemical course of the reaction. With this detailed understanding, nucleophilic additions to ditetrelenes can be exploited in the future.

Recent advances of group 14 dimetallenes and dimetallynes in bond activation and catalysis

Since the first heavy alkene analogues of germanium and tin were isolated in 1976, followed by West's disilene in 1981, the chemistry of stable group 14 dimetallenes and dimetallynes has advanced immensely. Recent developments in this field veered the focus from the isolation of novel bonding motifs to mimicking transition metals in their ability to activate small molecules and perform catalysis. The potential of these homonuclear multiply bonded compounds has been demonstrated numerous times in the activation of H2, NH3, CO2 and other small molecules. Hereby, the strong relationship between structure and reactivity warrants close attention towards rational ligand design. This minireview provides an overview on recent developments in regard to bond activation with group 14 dimetallenes and dimetallynes with the perspective of potential catalytic applications of these compounds.

Cascade-Reaction Leading to an Intramolecular [2 + 4] Cycloaddition of a Phenyl Group by a Reactive Ge═Si Double Bond

The reaction of GeCl₂·dioxane with 2 equiv of the thiolate LiSHyp [Hyp = Si(SiMe₃)₃] yields the germanide (12-crown-4)₂Li[Ge(SHyp)₃] (1). A small structural variation in the substituent leads to a completely different result because the reaction of GeCl₂·dioxane with 2 equiv of the thiolate KSHyp^Ph₃ [Hyp^Ph₃ = Si(SiMe₃)₂(SiPh₃)] in toluene yields the unexpected compound [Ph₃Si][Me₃Si]Ge[{(C₆H₅)Ph₂Si}{SiMe₃}₂SiS]Si[SSiMe₃] (2) in high yield. The reaction cascade to give 2 includes several rearrangement reactions and an intramolecular [2 + 4] cycloaddition of a phenyl ring. The syntheses and molecular structures of both compounds are presented, together with quantum-chemical calculations and NMR measurements, to enlighten the reaction mechanism behind the formation of 2.

Activation of Protic, Hydridic and Apolar E-H Bonds by a Boryl-Substituted GeII Cation

The synthesis of a boryl-substituted germanium(II) cation, [Ge{B(NDippCH)₂ }(IPrMe)]⁺ , (Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) featuring a supporting N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donor, has been explored through chloride abstraction from the corresponding (boryl)(NHC)GeCl precursor. Crystallographic studies in the solid state and UV/Vis spectra in fluorobenzene solution show that this species dimerizes under such conditions to give [(IPrMe){(HCNDipp)₂ B}Ge=Ge{B(NDippCH)₂ }(IPrMe)]²⁺ (IPrMe = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene), which can be viewed as an imidazolium-functionalized digermene. The dimer is cleaved in the presence of donor solvents such as [D₈ ]thf or [D₅ ]pyridine, to give monomeric adducts of the type [Ge{B(NDippCH)₂ }(IPrMe)(L)]⁺ . In the case of the thf adduct, the additional donor is shown to be sufficiently labile that it can act as a convenient in situ source of the monomeric complex [Ge{B(NDippCH)₂ }(IPrMe)]⁺ for oxidative bond-activation chemistry. Thus, [Ge{B(NDippCH)₂ }(IPrMe)(thf)]⁺ reacts with silanes and dihydrogen, leading to the formation of Ge^IV products, whereas the cleavage of the N-H bond in ammonia ultimately yields products containing C-H and B-N bonds. The facile reactivity observed in E-H bond activation is in line with the very small calculated HOMO-LUMO gap (132 kJ mol^-1 ).

Mechanistic investigations and molecular properties of 1,2-bis(ferrocenyl)dimetallenes including group 14 elements

The theoretical results suggest the reactivity increases in the order: 1-C ≪ 1-Si < 1-Ge < 1-Sn < 1-Pb.

Addition of Isocyanides to Tetramesityldigermene: A Comparison of the Reactivity between Surface and Molecular Digermenes

The reaction of benzyl isocyanide, tert-butyl isocyanide, and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide with tetramesityldigermene (Mes₂ Ge=GeMes₂ ) was examined. Whereas the addition of benzyl isocyanide gave the C-NC activation product, Mes₂ Ge(CH₂ Ph)Ge(CN)Mes₂ , tert-butyl isocyanide, and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide did not give stable adducts, rather the rate of conversion of the digermene to the corresponding cyclotrigermane was accelerated. A comparison between the reactivity of the isocyanides with Mes₂ Ge=GeMes₂ and the Ge(100)-2×1 surface was made and some insights into the surface chemistry are offered.

The cycloaddition reactions of carbonyl compounds and alkynes to (di)tetrelenes appear to follow Woodward–Hoffman rules.

Kinetic and mechanistic studies of the reactions of diarylgermylenes and tetraaryldigermenes with carbon tetrachloride

The mechanisms of the reactions of diphenylgermylene (GePh2) with CCl4 in hydrocarbon solvents and in THF solution have been studied, employing 3,4-dimethyl-1,1-diphenylgermacyclopent-3-ene (6a) and 1,1-diphenylgermacyclobutane (17) as photochemical precursors to GePh2. In hydrocarbon solvents, the reaction produces Ph2GeCl2 (10) and Ph2Ge(Cl)CCl3 (12) in a ratio of 10:12 ≈ 7, along with a variety of other radical-derived products and small amounts of Ph2GeH(D)Cl (11), which is formed partly by reaction of GePh2 with adventitious HCl. The reaction is much cleaner in THF, where 12 is formed as the major product (10:12 ≈ 0.8); a similar product distribution is obtained in hexanes containing 0.05 mol/L THF, while 12 is the exclusive product in hexanes containing 3 mmol/L NEt3. Rate constants for the reactions of CCl4 with GePh2 and five ring-substituted derivatives were determined by laser flash photolysis, as well as Arrhenius parameters for reaction of the parent (GePh2), in the two solvents. The reactions of GePh2 with CCl4 and CHCl3 have also been studied in 3-methylpentane solution at 78–90 K. Different reaction mechanisms are clearly operative in hydrocarbon and complexing solvents, but both involve modest charge donation from germanium to the substrate in the transition state for the rate-determining step. For the reaction in hydrocarbon solvents, the data are consistent with inner-sphere electron transfer following or in concert with weak Lewis acid–base complexation. A similar mechanism is proposed for the reaction in THF solution, in competition with a second involving nucleophilic attack of the germylene–THF complex at a chlorine atom of the substrate. Rate constants were also determined for reaction of CCl4 with the corresponding tetraaryldigermenes at low halocarbon concentrations in hexanes, along with Arrhenius parameters for the parent (Ge2Ph4). These reactions also proceed via initial Cl-atom abstraction, based on the identity of the products formed in the reaction of CCl4 with tetramesityldigermene.

Unique homonuclear multiple bonding in main group compounds

Significant progress in the chemistry of main group compounds (group 13, 14, and 15) containing homonuclear multiple bonds has been made over the past three decades. This feature article addresses the unique structural and bonding motifs of these compounds, with a particular emphasis on both iconic molecules and recent novel discoveries.
