Abstract
Digital health interventions (DHIs) are often burdened by poor user engagement and high drop-out rates, diminishing their potential public health impact. Identifying user-related factors predictive of engagement has therefore drawn significant research attention in recent years. Absent from this literature-yet implied by DHI design-is the notion that individuals who use DHIs have well-regulated learning capabilities that facilitate engagement with unguided intervention content. In this narrative review, we make the case that learning capacity can differ markedly across individuals, and that the requirements of self-guided learning for many DHIs do not guarantee that those who sign up for these interventions have good learning capabilities at the time of uptake. Drawing upon a rich body of theoretical work on self-regulated learning (SRL) in education research, we propose a user-as-learner perspective to delineate parameters and drivers of variable engagement with DHIs. Five prominent theoretical models of SRL were wholistically evaluated according to their relevance for digital health. Three key themes were drawn and applied to extend our current understanding of engagement with DHIs: (a) common drivers of engagement in SRL, (b) the temporal nature of engagement and its drivers, and (c) individuals may differ in learning capability. Integrating new perspectives from SRL models offered useful theoretical insights that could be leveraged to enhance engagement with intervention content throughout the DHI user journey. In an attempt to consolidate these differing-albeit complementary-perspectives, we develop an integrated model of engagement and provide an outline of future directions for research to extend the current understanding of engagement issues in self-guided DHIs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies have previously demonstrated a prospective influence of craving on substance use in the following hours. Conceptualizing substance use as a dynamic system of causal elements could provide valuable insights into the interaction of craving with other symptoms in the process of relapse. The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of these daily life dynamic inter-relationships by applying dynamic networks analyses to EMA data sets. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Secondary analyses were conducted on time-series data from two 2-week EMA studies. Data were collected in French outpatient addiction treatment centres. A total of 211 outpatients beginning treatment for alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, stimulants and opiate addiction took part. MEASUREMENTS Using mobile technologies, participants were questioned four times per day relative to substance use, craving, exposure to cues, mood, self-efficacy and pharmacological addiction treatment use. Multi-level vector auto-regression models were used to explore contemporaneous, temporal and between-subjects networks. FINDINGS Among the 8260 daily evaluations, the temporal network model, which depicts the lagged associations of symptoms within participants, demonstrated a unidirectional association between craving intensity at one time (T0) and primary substance use at the next assessment (T1, r = 0.1), after controlling for the effect of all other variables. A greater self-efficacy at T0 was associated with fewer cues (r = -0.04), less craving (r = -0.1) and less substance use at T1 (r = -0.07), and craving presented a negative feedback loop with self-efficacy (r = -0.09). CONCLUSIONS Dynamic network analyses showed that, among outpatients beginning treatment for addiction, high craving, together with low self-efficacy, appear to predict substance use more strongly than low mood or high exposure to cues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quitting smoking is difficult and many people who smoke experience cessation fatigue (CF) as a result of multiple failed attempts. This study examined the association of CF with making and sustaining a smoking quit attempt. METHODS Data analysed were 4,139 adults (aged 18 years or older) who smoked daily or weekly and participated in the 2018 and 2020 International Tobacco Control Four Country Smoking and Vaping Surveys (ITC 4CV) conducted in Australia, Canada, England, and the US. CF was assessed at baseline using a single question: "To what extent are you tired of trying to quit smoking?" with response options: "Not at all tired"; "Slightly tired"; "Moderately tired"; "Very tired"; or "Extremely tired". We used binary logistic regression models to test the hypothesis that baseline CF would predict lower odds of both making a quit attempt and sustaining abstinence for a month or longer at follow-up adjusted for socio-demographic and smoking/vaping-related covariates. RESULTS Persons who currently smoked and reported at least some CF were more likely to make a quit attempt, but less likely to sustain abstinence for at least one month, than those who reported no CF. These associations were independent of socio-demographic variables, and they did not differ by country. CONCLUSION Contrary to expectation, CF was positively associated with making a quit attempt and non-linearly associated with lower rates of sustained abstinence at follow-up. While these findings should be replicated, they suggest that people with CF may benefit from targeted support to remain abstinent after a quit attempt.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between exercise addiction and brain structure in middle-older individuals, and to examine the role of self-efficacy in mediating physiological changes associated with exercise addiction. A total of 133 patients exhibiting symptoms of exercise addiction were recruited for this study (male = 43, age 52.86 ± 11.78 years). Structural magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral assessments were administered to assess the study population. Voxel-based morphological analysis was conducted using SPM12 software. Mediation analysis was employed to explore the potential neuropsychological mechanism of self-efficacy in relation to exercise addiction. The findings revealed a positive correlation between exercise addiction and gray matter volume in the right inferior temporal region and the right hippocampus. Conversely, there was a negative correlation with gray matter volume in the left Rolandic operculum. Self-efficacy was found to indirectly influence exercise addiction by affecting right inferior temporal region gray matter volume and acted as a mediating variable in the relationship between the gray matter volume of right inferior temporal region and exercise addiction. In summary, this study elucidates the link between exercise addiction and brain structure among middle-older individuals. It uncovers the intricate interplay among exercise addiction, brain structure, and psychological factors. These findings enhance our comprehension of exercise addiction and offer valuable insights for the development of interventions and treatments.

Abstract
The prevalence of vaping worldwide is showing an upward trend. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with motivation to quit vaping among vapers in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, through a cross-sectional, purposive sampling study. Respondents were required to complete a questionnaire consisting of vapers' sociodemographic questions, habitual behavioral pattern questions, the e-Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence, the Glover-Nilsson Smoking Behavioral Dependence Questionnaire, perception questions, motivation to quit questions, and withdrawal symptom questions. A total of 311 vapers participated in this study. The majority of the vapers were male (84.6%), younger (18-25 years) (55.3%), and with monthly income less than RM 4000 (USD 868; 83.9%). The level of motivation to quit vaping was found to have a significant association with the perception of vaping being as satisfying as cigarette smoking (p = 0.006) and mild to very strong nicotine dependence (p = 0.001). Participants who recorded moderate and strong habitual vaping behaviors had lower odds of having high motivation to quit vaping compared to those recording slight habitual behaviors (OR = 0.279, 95%CI(0.110-0.708), p = 0.007 and OR = 0.185, 95%CI(0.052-0.654), p = 0.009, respectively). Factors associated with higher motivation to quit vaping could be explored to gain better understanding of how to increase their motivation level for future quit attempts.

Abstract
Objective Insufficient engagement is a critical barrier impacting the utility of digital interventions and mobile health assessments. As a result, engagement itself is increasingly becoming a target of studies and interventions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamics of engagement in mobile health data collection by exploring whether, how, and why response to digital self-report prompts change over time in smoking cessation studies. Method Data from two ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies of smoking cessation among diverse smokers attempting to quit (N = 573) with a total of 65,974 digital self-report prompts. We operationalize engagement with self-reporting in term of prompts delivered and prompt response to capture both broad and more granular engagement in self-reporting, respectively. The data were analyzed to describe trends in prompt delivered and prompt response over time. Time-varying effect modeling (TVEM) was employed to investigate the time-varying effects of response to previous prompt and the average response rate on the likelihood of current prompt response. Results Although prompt response rates were relatively stable over days in both studies, the proportion of participants with prompts delivered declined steadily over time in one of the studies, indicating that over time, fewer participants charged the device and kept it turned on (necessary to receive at least one prompt per day). Among those who did receive prompts, response rates were relatively stable. In both studies, there is a significant, positive and stable relationship between response to previous prompt and the likelihood of response to current prompt throughout all days of the study. The relationship between the average response rate prior to current prompt and the likelihood of responding to the current prompt was also positive, and increasing with time. Conclusion Our study highlights the importance of integrating various indicators to measure engagement in digital self-reporting. Both average response rate and response to previous prompt were highly predictive of response to the next prompt across days in the study. Dynamic patterns of engagement in digital self-reporting can inform the design of new strategies to promote and optimize engagement in digital interventions and mobile health studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-income smokers may benefit from interventions promoting nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs), particularly for women, as women have worse smoking cessation outcomes than men. Little is known about factors that affect daily NRT adherence, such as negative mood, motivation, and self-efficacy, and whether gender moderates these associations. METHODS Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing a novel, in session sampling of short-acting combination NRT intervention (In Vivo) to standard care smoking cessation behavioral counseling was performed. Low-income smokers (n = 62; Mage = 47.4; 42 % female; 61 % non-White) completed daily surveys using the Insight™ mHealth platform for 55 consecutive days. Three types of NRT adherence were examined: dose amount of short-acting NRT, nicotine patch wear time, and combination NRT (cNRT) (combined nicotine patch and short-acting NRT). RESULTS Generalized multilevel models report same-day negative mood was associated with greater likelihood of nicotine patch adherence in men, but unrelated to women's nicotine patch adherence. Same-day negative mood was associated with greater likelihood of cNRT adherence in men, but less likelihood in women. The relationship between same-day motivation and use of short-acting NRT varied by gender, but simple slope analyses revealed that motivation was unrelated to short-acting NRT use within either group. Same-day self-efficacy was related to an increased likelihood of nicotine patch adherence and cNRT adherence in women but unrelated to men's adherence of either type. CONCLUSIONS Future research should focus on gender differences in low-income smokers' same-day negative mood, motivation, and self-efficacy processes on NRT adherence during smoking cessation interventions.

Abstract
Background Smoking prevalence rates among people with HIV are nearly 3 times higher than those in the general population. Nevertheless, few smoking cessation trials targeting smokers with HIV have been reported in the literature. Efforts to develop and evaluate sustainable, low-cost, and evidence-based cessation interventions for people with HIV are needed. Given the widespread proliferation of mobile phones, the potential of using mobile health apps to improve the reach and efficacy of cessation interventions is promising, but evidence of efficacy is lacking, particularly among people with HIV. Objective This study will consist of a 2-group randomized controlled trial to evaluate a fully automated smartphone intervention for people with HIV seeking cessation treatment. Methods Participants (N=500) will be randomized to receive either standard treatment (ST; 250/500, 50%) or automated treatment (AT; 250/500, 50%). ST participants will be connected to the Florida Quitline and will receive nicotine replacement therapy in the form of transdermal patches and lozenges. This approach, referred to as Ask Advise Connect, was developed by our team and has been implemented in numerous health systems. ST will be compared with AT, a fully automated behavioral treatment approach. AT participants will receive nicotine replacement therapy and an interactive smartphone-based intervention that comprises individually tailored audiovisual and text content. The major goal is to determine whether AT performs better in terms of facilitating long-term smoking abstinence than the more resource-intensive ST approach. Our primary aim is to evaluate the efficacy of AT in facilitating smoking cessation among people with HIV. As a secondary aim, we will explore potential mediators and moderators and conduct economic evaluations to assess the cost and cost-effectiveness of AT compared with ST. Results The intervention content has been developed and finalized. Recruitment and enrollment will begin in the fall of 2021. Conclusions There is a critical need for efficacious, cost-effective, and sustainable cessation treatments for people with HIV who smoke. The AT intervention was designed to help fill this need. If efficacy is established, the AT approach will be readily adoptable by HIV clinics and community-based organizations, and it will offer an efficient way to allocate limited public health resources to tobacco control interventions.
