Achieving efficient power generation by designing bioinspired and multi-layered interfacial evaporator

Construction of hierarchical nanostructured surface on an organic hybrid selenidostannate with light trapping effect to achieve sunlight-driven environmental remediation

Due to the low intensity of sunlight, it is a great challenge to realize highly efficient sunlight-driven photocatalysis. To maximize the utilization of sunlight, increasing the light capturing ability of photocatalysts is a prerequisite to attain high catalytic performances. Due to the multiple reflections of light in the hierarchical nanostructures, constructing hierarchical nanostructured surface should boost the sunlight capturing ability of a photocatalyst. Herein we used a surface oxidation etching method to construct a hierarchical nanostructure on the surface of an organic hybrid selenidostannate [Bmim]4[Sn9Se20], namely BTSe. After 24 hours of etching by ammonium persulfate, the surface of BTSe-O24 turned into a hierarchical nanostructure. FDTD simulation proved that the hierarchical nanostructure can effectively decline the loss of incident light and enhance light capturing ability of BTSe-O24. As a result, BTSe-O24 can completely reduce Cr(VI) (100 mg/L) in 8 min with a conversion rate of 750 mg/(g h) under sunlight. The catalytic performance of BTSe-O24 under sunlight is even better than those of most reported photocatalysts under high-power xenon lamps. More importantly, BTSe-O24 can maintain high photocatalytic efficiency in the whole daytime (from 8:00 to 16:00 in autumn and winter). Our research opens a new perspective on the design of sunlight-driven photocatalysts.

Bioinspired and 3D-printed solar evaporators for highly efficient freshwater-electricity co-generation

Interfacial solar steam generation, governed by dynamic mass and heat transfer processes, holds significant potential for alleviating the water-energy crisis. Various advanced water-electricity co-generation (WEG) systems have been developed in recent years. However, their complex preparation process and lack of harmonious integration hinder further advancement. To address these challenges, we design and fabricate a novel WEG system inspired by tree transpiration, based on the principle of charge separation induced by water passing through a negatively charged channel to achieve freshwater-electricity co-production. This system consists of melanin-like polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs)-coated film for solar absorption and a support layer doped with PDA NPs for water transportation, thermal insulation, and power generation. The high degree of design freedom and flexibility afforded by the 3D printing technique allows for effectively regulating the water flow content and height, ensuring sufficient ion migration and brine circulation. This WEG system achieves a harmonious integration of water evaporation and electricity generation, which demonstrates an efficient, self-operating, and sustainable output of 0.48 V, 18.36 μA, and a water evaporation rate of 2.13 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun irradiation. This work provides new inspiration for the structural design of robust WEG systems for highly efficient freshwater-electricity co-generation.

Gas-liquid two-phase bubble flow spinning for hydrovoltaic flexible electronics

Hydrovoltaic technologies that generate electricity by absorbing or transferring free water without chemical reactions have been explored as potential candidates for renewable energy. Self-powered flexible sensors, including hydrovoltaic fibers, are becoming an important research direction in the field of renewable energy. However, integrating sensing and power generation in functional fibers remains challenging due to the need to regulate water movement to achieve performance differences. Here, we present a gas-liquid two-phase flow spinning method, inspired by spider multimodal spinning, that uses bubble-triggered spinning-liquid deformation to fabricate hollow, solid spindle, and ratchet tooth-shaped fibers. These structures alter water adsorption and transfer behaviors, making them suitable for targeted applications in hydrovoltaic devices for energy and sensing fields. Shaped fibers prepared from alginate-bridged MoS₂ enable a wide range of hydrovoltaic applications. The obtained fiber has a power density of 2.18 mW/cm3, stable operation at 2.1 V for 43 hours, and sensitivity of 9.36 mV/RH%/s, leading to the development of smart masks for nasal cycle monitoring, diagnosis, and therapy as potential applications. Spinning materials were extended to materials such as carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, etc., inspiring the design of structure-responsive hydroelectric materials and advancing textile electronics.

Photothermal-Responsive Aerogel-Hydrogel Binary System for Efficient Water Purification and All-Weather Hydrovoltaic Generation

Hydrovoltaic generators (HVGs) convert abundant water energy into distributed electricity to promote the Internet of Things. Realizing low-cost yet high-performance HVG remains challenging, hindering its commercialization and application. Inspired by the xylem conduits in plants, which transport water and nutrients, an aerogel-hydrogel binary-component system (SHA-HVG) is developed. It consists of a photothermal graphite-doped polyvinylidene fluoride (G-PVDF) aerogel, infilled with a thermosensitive wettability-switchable sulfonic acid-modified polyisopropylacrylamide hydrogel (S-PNIPAM) by in situ polymerization, which significantly promotes water/ion transporting and boosts electricity output. SHA-HVG demonstrates all-weather high output by cooperating power generation mechanisms of thermosensitive hydrogel-promoted surface photothermal evaporation during the daytime and sulfonic group-enhanced ion concentration gradient at nighttime, resulting in efficient water desalination (2.75 kg m-2 h-1) and a 2669% increase in power density (56.86 µW cm-2) compared to single-component HVG of G-PVDF. SHA-HVG is chemically stable and can be reactivated/recycled to improve its power generation efficiency to ∼130% by increasing its built-in ionic environment. A marine/offshore cultivation system is demonstrated using an SHA-HVG array, realizing an autonomous greenhouse for water desalination, self-irrigation, and self-powered environment monitoring. This work presents a cost-effective HVG strategy for efficient seawater desalination and electricity harvesting, envisioning the development of distributed energy, smart agriculture, and offshore planting.

Mimicked Trees for Spatial Microfluidic Solar Evaporation

The lack of freshwater is becoming an increasingly urgent problem, and clean water production with green energy is becoming a hot topic. Among these, mimicked transpiration for water treatment enabled with solar energy is attracting more and more interest. In this work, we design unique microchannels inspired by leaf veins in nature. We experimentally observe the unique microfludic phenomena exhibited during liquid transport inside the mimicked microchannels, and the underlying mechanisms of the microfluidic performance of the mimicked microchannels are also revealed. Moreover, a type of mimicked leaf integrating "veins" for fluid transport and "stomata" for solar evaporation is designed. Our mimicked leaves achieve rapid liquid transport, when the light intensity is 1 sun, the maximum evaporation rate is 1.85 kg m-2 h-1, and the photothermal conversion efficiency is higher than 92%. In addition, with the rapid liquid transport capability of our mimicked leaves, we innovatively design a mimicked tree for spatial solar evaporation, exhibiting an evaporation rate of 1.52 kg m-2 h-1 with a light intensity of 1 sun. Our mimicked trees promise the microfluidics-powered, large-scale and multidirectional transportation of water, as well as excellent spatial evaporation of water.

Water Evaporation-Induced Electricity Generation: Mechanisms, Optimization Strategies, and Future Prospects

This review focuses on the water evaporation-induced electricity generation (WEG), a promising renewable energy technology that harvests energy through interfacial interactions during water's liquid-to-vapor phase transition. The article outlines the fundamental mechanisms of streaming potential and evaporation potential, along with multiple optimization strategies, e.g., material surface modification, preparation of hybrid composites, construction of nanochannels, adjustment of wetting interface, and bio-inspired designs. Furthermore, the article explores the practical applications of WEG in fields such as power supply, environmental monitoring sensors, and integrated desalination and power generation systems. Finally, the review highlights future research directions, emphasizing enhanced energy conversion efficiency, optimizing designs, and scalable application development, which is expected to make WEG an important alternative energy source in regions rich in water resources and solar energy.

Advancing Efficiency in Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation: Strategies and Applications

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) has emerged as a promising technology for addressing global water scarcity by utilizing solar-thermal conversion and evaporation at the air/material/water interface. The exceptional performance of these systems has attracted significant interest; it is imperative to establish rigorous and scientific standards for evaluating effectiveness, optimizing system design, and ensuring efficient practical applications. In this Review, we propose consensus criteria for accurately assessing system performance and guiding future advancements. We then explore the fundamental mechanisms driving system synergy, emphasizing how material compositions, microscopic hierarchical material structures, and macroscopic three-dimensional spatial architecture designs enhance solar absorption and photothermal conversion; balance heat confinement with water pathway optimization; manage salt resistance; and regulate enthalpy during vaporization. These matched coordination strategies are crucial for maximizing the target SDIE efficiency. Additionally, we investigate the practical applications of SDIE technologies, focusing on cutting-edge progress and versatile water purification, combined with atmospheric water harvesting, salt collection, electric generation, and photothermal deicing. Finally, we highlight the challenges and exciting opportunities for advancing research, emphasizing future efforts to integrate fundamental principles, system-level collaboration, and application-driven approaches to boost sustainable and highly efficient water and energy technologies. By linking system performance evaluation with optimization strategies for influencing factors, we offer a comprehensive overview of the field and a future outlook that promotes highly efficient clean water production and synergistic applications.

Solar Evaporator with Dual Gradient Heating Effect for Sustained and Efficient Desalination

Solar desalination shows promise in tackling freshwater shortages, but challenges arise from the trade-off between water transportation and heat supply, affecting evaporators' efficiency and salt resistance. Additionally, intermittent nature of solar radiation significantly diminishes overall evaporative performance. This study presents dual-gradient heating solar evaporator for efficient desalination. Dual-gradient heating is enabled through wettability difference (hydrophilicity aerogel and hydrophobicity film) and difference in phase transition temperature of phase change material, thus, effective heat supply can be provided to evaporation layer consisting of vertically oriented phase-change aerogel by surrounding heating layer consisting of phase-change film, with and without solar radiation. Employing this design, evaporator demonstrates industry-leading comprehensive performance in practical use. Under one sun illumination, evaporation rate achieves 6.84 kgm-2h-1 in 5.0 wt% salinity, with efficiency of 90.9%. In darkness, evaporation rate remains high at 2.61 kgm-2h-1 (30 minutes). Moreover, evaporator exhibits outstanding solar energy storage capacity and long-term stabe evaporative performance and salt resistance for 7-day testing. Furthermore, evaporator successfully produces freshwater from real Bohai Sea water under weak outdoor lighting, addressing recommended daily intake of water for 2.5 households. This work introduces new perspective for maximizing utilization of solar energy for seawater desalination and overcoming intermittent solar radiation.

Hydrogen-bond disruption in molecularly engineered Janus evaporators for enhanced solar desalination

Hydrogels have emerged as effective evaporator platforms, significantly enhancing evaporation rates by disrupting water's hydrogen bond network. Here, we present an advanced strategy to improve hydrogel evaporation performance by tailoring alkyl hydrophobic groups within biparental polyelectrolyte-shell micelles grafted onto the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel surface. Poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) quaternized with methyl iodide (MeI) or ethyl iodide (EtI) formed the biparental polyelectrolyte shell, while poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBzMA) constituted the micelle core, creating BE-MeI and BE-EtI micelles, respectively. The molecularly engineered BE-MeI micelles exhibited an optimized configuration of quaternary amines linked to hydrophobic groups, achieving a synergistic balance between water attraction via electrostatic interactions and water repulsion via steric hindrance. This configuration effectively disrupted the water's hydrogen bond network, lowering the water evaporation enthalpy to 1434 J g-1. The BE-MeI micelle-grafted PVA hydrogel achieved a record-breaking evaporation rate of 4.1 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation, surpassing prior benchmarks, including our previously reported poly(4-vinyl pyridine) quaternized by a MeI system. Additionally, the grafted micelle layer exhibited a salt rejection ratio of 99.62%, ensuring excellent desalination performance. The biparental polyelectrolyte-shell micelle grafting strategy is broadly applicable across diverse hydrogel systems, representing a significant advancement in solar-driven desalination technology.

Multiscale Biomimetic Evaporators Based on Liquid Metal/Polyacrylonitrile Composite Fibers for Highly Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Solar steam generation (SSG) offers a cost-effective solution for producing clean water by utilizing solar energy. However, integrating effective thermal management and water transportation to develop high-efficiency solar evaporators remains a significant challenge. Here, inspired by the hierarchical structure of the stem of bird of paradise, a three-dimensional multiscale liquid metal/polyacrylonitrile (LM/PAN) evaporator is fabricated by assembling LM/PAN fibers. The strong localized surface plasmon resonance of LM particles and porous structure of LM/PAN fibers with interconnected channels lead to efficient light absorption up to 90.9%. Consequently, the multiscale biomimetic LM/PAN evaporator achieves an outstanding water evaporation rate of 2.66 kg m-2 h-1 with a solar energy efficiency of 96.5% under one sun irradiation and an exceptional water rate of 2.58 kg m-2 h-1 in brine. Additionally, the LM/PAN evaporator demonstrates a superior purification performance for seawater, with the concentration of Na+, Mg2+, K+ and Ca2+ in real seawater dramatically decreased by three orders to less than 7 mg L-1 after desalination under light irradiation. The multiscale LM/PAN evaporator with hierarchical structure regulates the water transportation as well as thermal management for highly effective solar-driven evaporation, providing valuable insight into the structural design principles for advanced SSG systems.

Recent Advances in Next-Generation Textiles

Textiles have played a pivotal role in human development, evolving from basic fibers into sophisticated, multifunctional materials. Advances in material science, nanotechnology, and electronics have propelled next-generation textiles beyond traditional functionalities, unlocking innovative possibilities for diverse applications. Thermal management textiles incorporate ultralight, ultrathin insulating layers and adaptive cooling technologies, optimizing temperature regulation in dynamic and extreme environments. Moisture management textiles utilize advanced structures for unidirectional transport and breathable membranes, ensuring exceptional comfort in activewear and outdoor gear. Protective textiles exhibit enhanced features, including antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-toxic gas, heat-resistant, and radiation-shielding capabilities, providing high-performance solutions for healthcare, defense, and hazardous industries. Interactive textiles integrate sensors for monitoring physical, chemical, and electrophysiological parameters, enabling real-time data collection and responses to various environmental and user-generated stimuli. Energy textiles leverage triboelectric, piezoelectric, and hygroelectric effects to improve energy harvesting and storage in wearable devices. Luminous display textiles, including electroluminescent and fiber optic systems, enable dynamic visual applications in fashion and communication. These advancements position next-generation textiles at the forefront of materials science, significantly expanding their potential across a wide range of applications.

Interdisciplinary Hybrid Solar-Driven Evaporators: Theoretical Framework of Fundamental Mechanisms and Applications

The global water and energy crisis seems to be mitigated with promising prospects of emerging interdisciplinary hybrid solar-driven evaporator technology (IHSE). However, the lack of numeric standards for comparison between enormously reported systems and the synergistic effects of interdisciplinary hybridization remains a significant challenge. To entice researchers from various domains to collaborate on the design of a system for realistic, large-scale applications, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the interdisciplinary approaches to IHSE from the domains of physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering, along with their guiding principles and underlying challenges. First, an in-depth analysis of IHSE with the basic scientific foundations and current advancements in recent years is discussed. Then, the physical principles/scientific principles alongside the overall system improvement enhancement techniques at the macro and micro scale are highlighted. Furthermore, the review analyzes the impact of significant physical factors that alter or restrict the efficiency of IHSE, as well as their connection and potential regulation. In addition, a comprehensive study of emerging sustainable applications for insight into the design and optimization of IHSE is provided for scientists from different fields. Lastly, the current challenges and future perspectives of interdisciplinary IHSE for large-scale applications are emphasized.

Novel Sponge-Based Carbonaceous Hydrogel for a Highly Efficient Interfacial Photothermal-Driven Atmospheric Water Generator

A high-performance atmospheric water generator based on continuous adsorption-desorption of liquid hygroscopic agents was constructed by applying interfacial photothermal evaporation technology to the field of atmospheric water harvesting. A three-dimensional carbon-containing sponge hydrogel photothermal conversion material with a porous channel structure was designed, which was prepared from melamine foam (MF) and carbon black (CB) cross-linked by sodium alginate (SA). The results showed that the evaporation rate of CB/SA@MF in pure water was 1.90 kg·m-2·h-1, and the photothermal conversion efficiency could reach 85.0%. The multistage pore structures and water transport channels in the A4 configuration device provided an excellent structural basis for material salt resistance and liquid hygroscopic agent regeneration. Using sponge-based CB/SA@MF hydrogel photothermal composites as the evaporation interface and liquid hygroscopic salts as the air-water trapping agent, an interfacial photothermal-driven atmospheric water generator successfully absorbed water at night and produced water during the day. Its water production could reach 2.84 kg·m-2·d-1. The cost of the atmospheric water generator was only $12, and the water quality obtained after 5 cycle tests met WHO/GB 5749-2022. This research was designed to collect fresh water from the air, bringing convenience to inland arid regions as well as remote and scattered areas with limited power resources.

Hermetic hydrovoltaic cell sustained by internal water circulation

Numerous efforts have been devoted to harvesting sustainable energy from environment. Among the promising renewable resources, ambient heat exhibits attractive prospects due to its ubiquity and inexhaustibility, and has been converted into electricity through water evaporation-induced hydrovoltaic approaches. However, current hydrovoltaic approaches function only in low-humidity environments and continuously consume water. Herein, we fabricate a hermetic hydrovoltaic cell (HHC) to harvest ambient heat, and have fully addressed the limitations posed by environmental conditions. Meanwhile, for the first time we develop an internal circulation hydrovoltaic mechanism. Taking advantage of the heterogeneous wicking bilayer structure, we verify that inside the hermetic cell, the ambient temperature fluctuation-induced evaporation and further the water circulation can persist, which sustains the hydrovoltaic effect to convert ambient heat into electricity. More importantly, the hermetic design enables the cell to work continuously and reliably for 160 h with negligible water consumption, unaffected by external influences such as wind and light, making it an excellent candidate for extreme situations such as water-scarce deserts, highly humid tropical rain forests, rainy days, and dark underground engineering. These findings provide an easily accessible and widely applicable route for stably harnessing renewable energy, and more notably, offer a novel paradigm toward leveraging low-grade ambient heat energy via circulation design.

Recent Advances of Bio-Based Hydrogel Derived Interfacial Evaporator for Sustainable Water and Collaborative Energy Storage Applications

Solar interfacial evaporation strategy (SIES) has shown great potential to deal with water scarcity and energy crisis. Biobased hydrogel derived interfacial evaporator can realize efficient evaporation due to the unique structure- properties relationship. As such, increasing studies have focused on water treatment or even potential accompanying advanced energy storage applications with respect of efficiency and mechanism of bio-based hydrogel derived interfacial evaporation from microscale to molecular scale. In this review, the interrelationship between efficient interfacial evaporator and bio-based hydrogel is first presented. Then, special attention is paid on the inherent molecular characteristics of the biopolymer related to the up-to-date studies of promising biopolymers derived interfacial evaporator with the objective to showcase the unique superiority of biopolymer. In addition, the applications of the bio-based hydrogels are highlighted concerning the aspects including water desalination, water decontamination atmospheric water harvesting, energy storage and conversion. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are given to unveil the bottleneck of the biobased hydrogel derived SIES in sustainable water and other energy storage applications.

Hydrovoltaic Effects from Mechanical-Electric Coupling at the Water-Solid Interface

The natural water cycle on the Earth carries an enormous amount of energy as thirty-five percent of solar energy reaching the Earth's surface goes into water. However, only a very marginal part of the contained energy, mostly kinetic energy of large volume bulk water, is harvested by hydroelectric power plants. Natural processes in the water cycle, such as rainfall, water evaporation, and moisture adsorption, are widespread but have remained underexploited in the past due to the lack of appropriate technologies. In the past decade, the emergence of hydrovoltaic technology has provided ever-increasing opportunities to extend the technical capability for energy harvesting from the water cycle. Featuring electricity generation from mechanical-electric coupling at the water-solid interface, hydrovoltaic technology embraces almost all dynamic processes associated with water, including raining, waving, flowing, evaporating, and moisture adsorbing. This versatility in dealing with various forms of water and associated energy renders hydrovoltaic technology a solution for fossil fuel-caused environmental problems. Here, we review the current progress of hydrovoltaic energy harvesting from water motion, evaporation, and ambient moisture. Device configuration, energy conversion mechanism mediated by mechanical-electric coupling at various water-solid interfaces, as well as materials selection and functionalization are discussed. Useful strategies guided by established mechanisms for device optimization are then covered. Finally, we provide an outlook on this emerging field and outline the challenges of improving output performance toward potential practical applications.

High Performance Solar-Driven Power-Water Cogeneration for Practical Application: From Micro/Nano Materials to Beyond

Solar-driven water-electricity cogeneration is a promising strategy for tackling water scarcity and power shortages. However, comprehensive reviews on performance, scalability, commercialization, and power density are lacking. This Perspective presents an overview of recent developments and insights into the challenges and future outlooks for practical applications in this area. We summarize recent advances in high-efficiency water production, focusing on rapid evaporation and condensation. Then we categorize power-water cogeneration systems by power generation mechanisms like steam, evaporation, salinity gradient, photovoltaics, and temperature gradient, providing a comprehensive summary of the performance and applicability of these systems in different scenarios. Finally, we highlight challenges in current systems, considering nanoscale mechanisms and large-scale manufacturing, while also exploring potential trends for future practical applications.

Thermodynamics-Guided High-Throughput Discovery of Eutectic High-Entropy Alloys for Rapid Solidification

Excellent castability, significantly refined microstructure, and good mechanical properties make eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) a natural fit for rapid solidification processes, e.g., additive manufacturing. Previous investigations have focused on developing EHEAs through trial and error and mixing known binary eutectic materials. However, eutectic compositions obtained from near-equilibrium conditions do not guarantee a fully eutectic microstructure under rapid solidifications. In this work, a thermodynamically guided high-throughput framework is proposed to design EHEAs for rapid solidification. Empirical formulas derived from past experimental observations and thermodynamic computations are applied and considered phase growth kinetics under rapid solidification (skewed phase diagram). The designed alloy candidate, Co25.6Fe17.9Ni22.4Cr19.1Ta8.9Al6.1 (wt.%), contains nanostructured eutectic lamellar and shows a high Vickers hardness of 675 Hv. In addition to this specific composition, the alloy design toolbox enables the development of new EHEAs for rapid solidification without the limitation of previous knowledge.

Enhanced Total Contactless Photothermal Desalination by Translucent Thin Film Coating of Crystalline Nanocellulose

The innovative approach of harnessing abundant solar energy to facilitate water purification holds great potential for addressing a diverse range of water-related challenges. Utilizing the same method of photothermal desalination is highly promising, sustainable, and cost effective. However, in photothermal desalination, generally, steam is generated at the liquid-air interface. Despite its immense potential, this results in a lower evaporation rate and is prone to salt fouling. Therefore, to address two main challenges, (1) fouling and (2) maximum interfacial temperature (100 °C), here, we report total contactless photothermal desalination by a translucent thin film coating of Crystalline Nanocellulose (CNC). In contactless photothermal desalination, the active photothermal layer remains in no physical contact with the saline water; thus, automatic antifouling and a temperature above the boiling point of water can be achieved for water purification. In this report, we have sustainably extracted CNC from waste sawdust by a sonochemical extraction method using minimal chemicals. Additionally, the sonoextraction method through cavitation helps in the desulfation of CNC. These thermally stable and highly crystalline CNCs are used in making active translucent photothermal active layers for photothermal desalination. CNCs were well characterized by both microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. In the photothermal desalination, the results show an augmented evaporation rate of ∼3.30 kg/m2·h and virtually infinite recyclability for longer usability. Moreover, the integrated setup reported here comprises an independent module with a highly flexible design that mimics the greenhouse effect for a high solar-to-steam output.

Cogeneration of Clean Water and Valuable Energy/Resources via Interfacial Solar Evaporation

Water, covering over two-thirds of the Earth's surface, holds immense potential for generating clean water, sustainable energy, and metal resources, which are the cornerstones of modern society and future development. It is highly desired to produce these crucial elements through eco-friendly processes with minimal carbon footprints. Interfacial solar evaporation, which utilizes solar energy at the air-liquid interface to facilitate water vaporization and solute separation, offers a promising solution. In this review, we systematically report the recent progress of the cogeneration of clean water and energy/resources including electricity, hydrogen, and metal resources via interfacial solar evaporation. We first gain insight into the energy and mass transport for a typical interfacial solar evaporation system and reveal the residual energy and resources for achieving the cogeneration goal. Then, we summarize the recent advances in materials/device designs for efficient cogeneration. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and potential opportunities for the further development of this field.

Silk Fibroin-Regulated Nanochannels for Flexible Hydrovoltaic Ion Sensing

The evaporation-induced hydrovoltaic effect based on ion-selective nanochannels can theoretically be employed for high-performance ion sensing; yet, the indeterminate ion-sensing properties and the acquisition of high sensing performance are rarely explored. Herein, a controllable nanochannel regulation strategy for flexible hydrovoltaic devices with highly sensitive ion-sensing abilities is presented across a wide concentration range. By multiple dip-coating of silk fibroin (SF) on an electrospinning nylon-66 nanofiber (NNF) film, the surface polarity enhancement, the fibers size regulation with a precision of ≈25 nm, and the nanostructure firm binding are achieved simultaneously. The resultant flexible freestanding hydrovoltaic device exhibits an open circuit voltage up to 4.82 V in deionized water, a wide ion sensing range of 10-7 to 100 m, and ultrahigh sensitivity as high as 1.37 V dec-1, which is significantly higher than the sensitivity of the traditional solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs). The fabricated flexible ion-sensitive hydrovoltaic device is successfully applied for wearable human sweat electrolyte sensing and for environmental trace-ion monitoring, thereby confirming the potential application of the hydrovoltaic effect for ion sensing.

Charges Transfer in Interfaces for Energy Generating

Under the threat of energy crisis and environmental pollution, the technology for sustainable and clean energy extraction has received considerable attention. Owing to the intensive exploration of energy conversion strategies, expanded energy sources are successfully converted into electric energy, including mechanical energy from human motion, kinetic energy of falling raindrops, and thermal energy in the ambient. Among these energy conversion processes, charge transfer at different interfaces, such as solid-solid, solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, and gas-contained interfaces, dominates the power-generating efficiency. In this review, the mechanisms and applications of interfacial energy generators (IEGs) with different interface types are systematically summarized. Challenges and prospects are also highlighted. Due to the abundant interfacial interactions in nature, the development of IEGs offers a promising avenue of inexhaustible and environmental-friendly power generation to solve the energy crisis.

The emerging chemistry of self-electrified water interfaces

Water is known for dissipating electrostatic charges, but it is also a universal agent of matter electrification, creating charged domains in any material contacting or containing it. This new role of water was discovered during the current century. It is proven in a fast-growing number of publications reporting direct experimental measurements of excess charge and electric potential. It is indirectly verified by its success in explaining surprising phenomena in chemical synthesis, electric power generation, metastability, and phase transition kinetics. Additionally, electrification by water is opening the way for developing green technologies that are fully compatible with the environment and have great potential to contribute to sustainability. Electrification by water shows that polyphasic matter is a charge mosaic, converging with the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect, which was discovered one century ago but is still often ignored. Electrified sites in a real system are niches showing various local electrochemical potentials for the charged species. Thus, the electrified mosaics display variable chemical reactivity and mass transfer patterns. Water contributes to interfacial electrification from its singular structural, electric, mixing, adsorption, and absorption properties. A long list of previously unexpected consequences of interfacial electrification includes: "on-water" reactions of chemicals dispersed in water that defy current chemical wisdom; reactions in electrified water microdroplets that do not occur in bulk water, transforming the droplets in microreactors; and lowered surface tension of water, modifying wetting, spreading, adhesion, cohesion, and other properties of matter. Asymmetric capacitors charged by moisture and water are now promising alternative equipment for simultaneously producing electric power and green hydrogen, requiring only ambient thermal energy. Changing surface tension by interfacial electrification also modifies phase-change kinetics, eliminating metastability that is the root of catastrophic electric discharges and destructive explosions. It also changes crystal habits, producing needles and dendrites that shorten battery life. These recent findings derive from a single factor, water's ability to electrify matter, touching on the most relevant aspects of chemistry. They create tremendous scientific opportunities to understand the matter better, and a new chemistry based on electrified interfaces is now emerging.

Bioinspired 3D flexible devices and functional systems

Flexible devices and functional systems with elaborated three-dimensional (3D) architectures can endow better mechanical/electrical performances, more design freedom, and unique functionalities, when compared to their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts. Such 3D flexible devices/systems are rapidly evolving in three primary directions, including the miniaturization, the increasingly merged physical/artificial intelligence and the enhanced adaptability and capabilities of heterogeneous integration. Intractable challenges exist in this emerging research area, such as relatively poor controllability in the locomotion of soft robotic systems, mismatch of bioelectronic interfaces, and signal coupling in multi-parameter sensing. By virtue of long-time-optimized materials, structures and processes, natural organisms provide rich sources of inspiration to address these challenges, enabling the design and manufacture of many bioinspired 3D flexible devices/systems. In this Review, we focus on bioinspired 3D flexible devices and functional systems, and summarize their representative design concepts, manufacturing methods, principles of structure-function relationship and broad-ranging applications. Discussions on existing challenges, potential solutions and future opportunities are also provided to usher in further research efforts toward realizing bioinspired 3D flexible devices/systems with precisely programmed shapes, enhanced mechanical/electrical performances, and high-level physical/artificial intelligence.

Making Nanofiber Membrane Stand on End to Construct Vertically Interfacial Evaporators for Efficient Solar Evaporation, Omnidirectional Solar Absorption, and Ultrahigh-Salinity Brine Desalination

Solar-driven interfacial desalination is widely considered to be a promising technology to address the global water crisis. This study proposes a novel electrospun nanofiber-based all-in-one vertically interfacial solar evaporator endowed with a high steam generation rate, steady omnidirectional evaporation, and enduring ultrahigh-salinity brine desalination. In particular, the electrospun nanofiber is collected into the tubular structure, followed by spraying with a dense crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) film, which renders them sufficiently strong for the preparation of a vertically array evaporator. The integrated evaporator made an individual capillary as a unit to form multiple thermal localization interfaces and steam dissipation channels, realizing zone heating of water. Thus a high steam generation rate exceeding 4.0 kg m-2 h-1 in pure water is demonstrated even under omnidirectional sunlight, and outperforms existing evaporators. Moreover, salt ions in the photothermal layer can be effectively transported to the water in capillaries and subsequently exchanged with the bulk water due to the strong action of capillary force, which ensures an ultrahigh desalination rate (≈12.5 kg m-2 h-1 under 3 sun) in 25 wt% concentration brine over 300 min. As such, this work provides a meaningful roadmap for the development of state-of-the-art solar-driven interfacial desalination.

Enhancing Solar-Driven Water Purification by Multiscale Biomimetic Evaporators Featuring Lamellar MoS2/GO Heterojunctions

Solar-powered steam generation holds a strong sustainability in facing the global water crisis, while the production efficiency and antifouling performance remain challenges. Inspired by river moss, a multiscale biomimetic evaporator is designed, where the key photothermal conversion film composed of lamellar MoS2/graphene oxides (GO) can significantly enhance the evaporation efficiency and solve the problem of fouling. First-level leaf-like MoS2/GO nanosheets, obtained by a modified hydrothermal synthesis with an assisted magnetic-field rotation stirring, are self-assembled into a second-level nanoporous film, which achieves an evaporation rate (ER) of 1.69 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination and an excellent self-cleaning ability. The tertiary-bionic evaporator with a macroscopic crownlike shape further enhances the ER to 3.20 kg m-2 h-1, 189% above that of planar film, yielding 20.25 kg m2 of freshwater from seawater during a daytime exposure of 6 h. The exceptional outcomes originate from the macroscopic biomimetic design and the microscopic integration of heterojunction interfaces between the MoS2 and GO interlayers and the nanoporous surface. The biomimetic evaporator indicates a potential direction through surface/interface regulation of photothermal nanomaterials for water desalination.

Nanofluid-Guided Janus Membrane for High-Efficiency Electricity Generation from Water Evaporation

Harvesting electricity from widespread water evaporation provides an alternative route to cleaner power generation technology. However, current evaporation power generation (EPG) mainly depends on the dissociation process of certain functional groups (e.g., SO3 H) in water, which suffers from low power density and short-term output. Herein, the Janus membrane is prepared by combining nanofluid and water-grabbing material for EPG, where the nanoconfined ionic liquids (NCILs) serve as ion sources instead of the functional groups. Benefiting from the selective and fast transport of anions in NCILs, such EPG demonstrates excellent power performance with a voltage of 0.63 V, a short-circuit current of 140 µA, and a maximum power density of 16.55 µW cm-2 while operating for at least 180 h consistently. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and surface potential analysis reveal the molecular mechanism, that is, the diffusion of Cl- anions during evaporation is much faster than that of cations, generating the voltage and current across the membrane. Furthermore, the device performs well in varying environmental conditions, including different water temperatures and sources of evaporating water, showcasing its adaptability and integrability. Overall, the nanofluid-guided Janus membrane can efficiently transform low-grade thermal energy in evaporation into electricity, showing a competitive advantage over other sustainable applied approaches.

Phyto-inspired sustainable and high-performance fabric generators via moisture absorption-evaporation cycles

Collecting energy from the ubiquitous water cycle has emerged as a promising technology for power generation. Here, we have developed a sustainable moisture absorption-evaporation cycling fabric (Mac-fabric). On the basis of the cycling unidirectional moisture conduction in the fabric and charge separation induced by the negative charge channel, sustainable constant voltage power generation can be achieved. A single Mac-fabric can achieve a high power output of 0.144 W/m2 (5.76 × 102 W/m3) at 40% relative humidity (RH) and 20°C. By assembling 500 series and 300 parallel units of Mac-fabrics, a large-scale demo achieves 350 V of series voltage and 33.76 mA of parallel current at 25% RH and 20°C. Thousands of Mac-fabric units are sewn into a tent to directly power commercial electronic products such as mobile phones in outdoor environments. The lightweight (300 g/m2) and soft characteristics of the Mac-fabric make it ideal for large-area integration and energy collection in real circumstances.

Vertical Phase-Engineering MoS2 Nanosheet-Enhanced Textiles for Efficient Moisture-Based Energy Generation

Flexible moisture-electric generators (MEGs) capture chemical energy from atmospheric moisture for sustainable electricity, gaining attention in wearable electronics. However, challenges persist in the large-scale integration and miniaturization of MEGs for long-term, high-power output. Herein, a vertical heterogeneous phase-engineering MoS2 nanosheet structure based silk and cotton were rationally designed and successfully applied to construct wearable MEGs for moisture-energy conversion. The prepared METs exhibit ∼0.8 V open-circuit voltage, ∼0.27 mA/cm2 current density for >10 h, and >36.12 μW/cm2 peak output power density, 3 orders higher than current standards. And the large-scale device realizes a current output of 0.145 A. An internal phase gradient between the 2H semiconductor MoS2 in carbonized silks and 1T metallic MoS2 in cotton fibers enables a phase-engineering-based heterogeneous electric double layer functioning as an equivalent parallel circuit, leading to enhanced high-power output. Owing to their facile customization for seamless adaptation to the human body, we envision exciting possibilities for these wearable METs as integrated self-power sources, enabling real-time monitoring of physiological parameters in wearable electronics.

Functional MXenes: Progress and Perspectives on Synthetic Strategies and Structure-Property Interplay for Next-Generation Technologies

MXenes are a class of 2D materials that include layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Since their inception in 2011, they have garnered significant attention due to their diverse compositions, unique structures, and extraordinary properties, such as high specific surface areas and excellent electrical conductivity. This versatility has opened up immense potential in various fields, catalyzing a surge in MXene research and leading to note worthy advancements. This review offers an in-depth overview of the evolution of MXenes over the past 5 years, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and technological prospects. A classification scheme for MXene structures based on entropy is presented and an updated summary of the elemental constituents of the MXene family is provided, as documented in recent literature. Delving into the microscopic structure and synthesis routes, the intricate structure-property relationships are explored at the nano/micro level that dictate the macroscopic applications of MXenes. Through an extensive review of the latest representative works, the utilization of MXenes in energy, environmental, electronic, and biomedical fields is showcased, offering a glimpse into the current technological bottlenecks, such asstability, scalability, and device integration. Moreover, potential pathways for advancing MXenes toward next-generation technologies are highlighted.

Multiscale Synergetic Bandgap/Structure Engineering in Semiconductor Nanofibrous Aerogels for Enhanced Solar Evaporation

Solar-driven interface evaporation has been identified as a sustainable seawater desalination and water purification technology. Nonetheless, the evaporation performance is still restricted by salt deposition and heat loss owing to weak solar spectrum absorption, tortuous channels, and limited plane area of conventional photothermal material. Herein, the semiconductor nanofibrous aerogels with a narrow bandgap, vertically aligned channels, and a conical architecture are constructed by the multiscale synergetic engineering strategy, encompassing bandgap engineering at the atomic scale and structure engineering at the nano-micro scale. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a Co-doped MoS2 nanofibrous aerogel is synthesized, which exhibits the entire solar absorption, superhydrophilic, and excellent thermal insulation, achieving a net evaporation rate of 1.62 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation, as well as a synergistically efficient dye ion adsorption function. This work opens up new possibilities for the development of solar evaporators for practical applications in clean water production.

Gradient heating induced better balance among water transportation, salt resistance and heat supply in a high performance multi-functional solar-thermal desalination device

Solar-driven desalination (SDD) is a promising technology for addressing water scarcity. However, how to overcome the trade-off between water transportation and heat supply of the evaporator to achieve a high evaporation rate and good salt tolerance simultaneously remains a challenge. Here, a novel all-in-one multi-functional SDD evaporator undergoing gradient heating is used. This evaporator incorporates a hydrophilic PDA (polydopamine)@CNT(carbon nanotube)/PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) aerogel with vertically aligned structures as the water evaporation layer, enabling rapid water transportation. Surrounding the evaporation layer, there is a photothermal hydrophobic CCP (cotton/CNT/polydimethylsiloxane) film that serves as the heating layer, enhancing the heat supply to the evaporation layer. This innovative design strikes a favorable balance between water transportation and heat supply, facilitating high evaporation rates and good salt tolerance simultaneously, while also maximizing electricity generation. Due to the wettability difference between the evaporation layer (PVA aerogel) and heating layer (CCP film), a record stable temperature gradient of nearly 70 °C was formed between the CCP film and the PVA aerogel under 1 sun irradiation, so that heat on the high-temperature CCP film was continuously transferred to the low-temperature aerogel through its thermal conductive network, leading to a high evaporation rate of 6.96 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation in 5.0 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) brine (higher than the world average seawater salinity (3.5 wt%)). Meanwhile, high flux directional flow of brine generated 130 mV stable voltage and 120 μA circuit current. Furthermore, the evaporator illustrates good stability for consecutive 7 days of testing and shows industry-leading comprehensive performance of SDD in actual use. More importantly, it was tested in real Bohai seawater under weak natural light, and fresh water generated can meet the recommended daily intake of water for 2.6 households and the simultaneously generated voltage reaches above 60 mV. In addition, the evaporator exhibits good adsorption capacity for heavy metals and dye molecules. This simple and universal solar evaporation structure is suitable for the assembly of gradient thermal structures for most solar thermal materials reported in the literature, which provides a new route for maximizing the use of solar energy for freshwater and electricity generation.

A Flexible Tough Hydrovoltaic Coating for Wearable Sensing Electronics

The lack of a strong binding mechanism between nanomaterials severely restricts the advantages of the evaporation-driven hydrovoltaic effect in wearable sensing electronics. It is a challenging task to observably improve the mechanical toughness and flexibility of hydrovoltaic devices to match the wearable demand without abandoning the nanostructures and surface function. Here, a flexible tough polyacrylonitrile/alumina (PAN/Al2 O3 ) hydrovoltaic coating with both good electricity generation (open-circuit voltage, Voc  ≈ 3.18 V) and sensitive ion sensing (2285 V M-1 for NaCl solutions in 10-4 to 10-3  m) capabilities is developed. The porous nanostructure composed of Al2 O3 nanoparticles is firmly locked by the strong binding effect of PAN, giving a critical binding force 4 times that of Al2 O3 film to easily deal with 9.92 m s-1 strong water-flow impact. Finally, skin-tight and non-contact device structures are proposed to achieve wearable multifunctional self-powered sensing directly using sweat. The flexible tough PAN/Al2 O3 hydrovoltaic coating breaks through the mechanical brittleness limitation and broadens the applications of the evaporation-induced hydrovoltaic effect in self-powered wearable sensing electronics.

Synergistic Dual-Mechanism Localized Heat Channeling and Spectrum-Tailored Liquid Metal Hydrogels for Efficient Solar Water Evaporation and Desalination

Photothermal hydrogels featuring broadband light absorption abilities and highly hydrated networks provide an appealing mass-energy transfer platform for water evaporation by using solar energy. However, the targeted delivery of solar heat energy to power the water evaporation process remains challenging. Herein, enlightened by metal-phenolic coordination chemistry and camouflaged architecture, photothermal hydrogels with dual-mechanism vaporization structure are tactfully designed via a rational interfacial engineering and integration strategy to enable near-µm heat confinement and highly efficient light-to-heat conversion ability. The spectrum-tailored liquid metal droplet (LMGAs-FeIII ) and optimized carbon-wrapped silver nanowire sponge (Ag@C750 ) are integrally built as photothermal promotors/channels and jointly embedded into a highly hydratable poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel, denoted as PALGH, to synergistically boost water molecule activation and interfacial vaporization behavior by triggering robust photothermal performance. As a result, under one sun irradiation, the all-embracing PALGH hydrogel evaporation system achieves a brine evaporation rate to a high level of 3.47 kg m-2 h-1 , and >19 L m-2 clean water of PALGH is ideally delivered daily when purifying natural seawater. This work offers not only a rational design principle to create sophisticated photothermal materials but also replenishes insight into solar heat generation and water transportation in a cross-media system.

Boosting water evaporation via continuous formation of a 3D thin film through triple-level super-wicking routes

Capillary-fed thin-film evaporation via micro/nanoscale structures has attracted increasing attention for its high evaporation flux and pumpless liquid replenishment. However, maximizing thin-film evaporation has been hindered by the intrinsic trade-off between the heat flux and liquid transport. Here, we designed and fabricated nanostructured micro-steam volcanoes on copper surfaces featuring triple-level super-wicking routes to overcome this trade-off and boost water evaporation. The triple-level super-wicking routes enable the continuous formation of a 3D thin film for highly efficient evaporation by continuous self-driven liquid replenishment and extending the thin-film region. The micro-steam volcanoes increased the surface area by 225%, improving the evaporation rate by 141%, with a rapid self-pumping water transport speed up to 80 mm s-1. A remarkable solar-driven water evaporation rate of 3.33 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun vertical incidence was achieved, which is among the highest reported values for metal-based evaporators. When attached to electric-heating plates, the evaporator realized an electrothermal evaporation rate of 12.13 kg m-2 h-1. Moreover, it can also be used for evaporative cooling with enhanced convective heat transfer, reaching a 36.2 °C temperature reduction on a heat source with a heat flux of 6 W cm-2. This study promises a general strategy for designing thin-film evaporators with high efficiencies, low costs, and multi-functional compatibilities.

Biological and Bioinspired Thermal Energy Regulation and Utilization

The regulation and utilization of thermal energy is increasingly important in modern society due to the growing demand for heating and cooling in applications ranging from buildings, to cooling high power electronics, and from personal thermal management to the pursuit of renewable thermal energy technologies. Over billions of years of natural selection, biological organisms have evolved unique mechanisms and delicate structures for efficient and intelligent regulation and utilization of thermal energy. These structures also provide inspiration for developing advanced thermal engineering materials and systems with extraordinary performance. In this review, we summarize research progress in biological and bioinspired thermal energy materials and technologies, including thermal regulation through insulation, radiative cooling, evaporative cooling and camouflage, and conversion and utilization of thermal energy from solar thermal radiation and biological bodies for vapor/electricity generation, temperature/infrared sensing, and communication. Emphasis is placed on introducing bioinspired principles, identifying key bioinspired structures, revealing structure-property-function relationships, and discussing promising and implementable bioinspired strategies. We also present perspectives on current challenges and outlook for future research directions. We anticipate that this review will stimulate further in-depth research in biological and bioinspired thermal energy materials and technologies, and help accelerate the growth of this emerging field.

High Throughput Fabrication of Flexible Top-Driven Sensing Probe

In this work, considering the current status of conservative and complicated traditional thrombosis treatment methods, a kind of flexible intelligent probe (FIP) with a top-driven sensing strategy is proposed to realize the expected function of thrombosis accurate localization in a liquid flow environment. After throughput fabrication, we find that the FIP has excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. Notable, our FIP with the principle of piezo-resistive sensing has a quasi-linear sensitivity (approx. 0.325 L per minute) to flow sensing in the low flow velocity range (0-1 L per minute). Via the well-designed magnetically driven method, our FIP has a maximum deflection output force of 443.264 mN, a maximum deflection angle of 43°, and a maximum axial force of 54.176 mN. We demonstrate that the FIP is capable of completing the specified command actions relatively accurately and has a good response to real-time sensing feedback performance, which has broad application prospects in thrombus localization detection.
