Abstract
Astaxanthin (ASTX), red-colored xanthophyll, also known as the "king of carotenoids" exhibits a strong antioxidant property that can be naturally found in green algae Haematococcus pluvialis, red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma, and various aquatic species including salmon, krill, trout, and fish eggs. Due to their strong antioxidant qualities, ASTX nanoparticles may be crucial in fighting against phytotoxicity caused by heavy metal ions. Similarly, it may also reduce the uptake of heavy metal, i.e. cadmium, and translocation by improving the morpho-physiological profiles of plants. Furthermore, it can also have the ability to scavenge free radicals, therefore, it can protect plants from reactive oxygen species (ROS). Implementing ASTX nanoparticles on crops can also help to achieve higher food production while minimizing toxic effects. Additionally, it can also possess several therapeutic activities including anti-cancerous, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammation, hepatoprotective, and cardiovascular, etc. that can be beneficial to treat various types of diseases in humans and animals. Recently, it has gained more interest in food, agriculture, aquaculture, neutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical industries due to its wide range of applications including food-coloring agents, food supplements, and strong antioxidant property that helps in skin protection, and boosts immune function. However, ASTX possesses poor water solubility and chemical stability so the implementation of ASTX on human health is facing various issues. Therefore, nanoencapsulation of ASTX is very crucial to improve its chemical stability and solubility, ultimately leading to its bioavailability and bioaccessibility. Recently, ASTX has been commercially available with specific dosages in the market mainly in the form of tablets, gels, powders, creams, syrups, etc. The current review mainly highlights the present state of ASTX nanoparticle applications in various fields explaining its natural and synthetic sources, extraction methods, chemical structure, stability, nanoformulations, nano encapsulation, and various commercial aspects.

Abstract
Microalgae, as photosynthetic microorganisms, offer a sustainable source of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, pigments, vitamins, and antioxidants. Leveraging their advantages, such as fast growth, CO2 fixation, cultivation without arable land, and wastewater utilisation, microalgae can produce a diverse range of compounds. The extracted products find applications in bioenergy, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries. The selection of microalgal species is crucial, and their biochemical composition varies during growth phases influenced by environmental factors like light, salinity, temperature, and nutrients. Manipulating growth conditions shapes biomass composition, optimising the production of target compounds. This review synthesises research from 2019 onwards, focusing on stress induction and two-stage cultivation in microalgal strategies. This review takes a broader approach, addressing the effects of various operating conditions on a range of biochemical compounds. It explores the impact of operational parameters (light, nutrient availability, salinity, temperature) on biomass composition, elucidating microalgal mechanisms. Challenges include species-specific responses, maintaining stable conditions, and scale-up complexities. A two-stage approach balances biomass productivity and compound yield. Overcoming challenges involves improving upstream and downstream processes, developing sophisticated monitoring systems, and conducting further modelling work. Future efforts should concentrate on strain engineering and refined monitoring, facilitating real-time adjustments for optimal compound accumulation. Moreover, conducting large-scale experiments is essential to evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of the process through techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessments.

Abstract
Given the escalating demand for renewable biofuels amidst the continual consumption of fossil energy, the exploration and identification of microalgal strains for biodiesel production have become crucial. In this study, a microalgal strain named HDMA-12 was isolated from Lake Chenjiadayuan in China to evaluate its biodiesel potential. Phylogenetic analysis of its internal transcribed spacer sequences revealed HDMA-12 as a new molecular record in the genus Coelastrum. When cultivated in BG11 basal medium, HDMA-12 achieved a biomass of 635.7 mg L-1 and a lipid content of 26.4%. Furthermore, the fatty acid methyl ester profile of HDMA-12 exhibited favorable combustion characteristics. Subjected to 200 mM NaCl stress, HDMA-12 reached its maximum biomass of 751.5 mg L-1 and a lipid content of 28.9%. These findings indicate the promising prospects of HDMA-12 as a promising microalgal strain for further advancements in biodiesel production.

Abstract
Natural astaxanthin is synthesized by diverse organisms including: bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and plants involving complex cellular processes, which depend on numerous interrelated parameters. Nonetheless, existing knowledge regarding astaxanthin biosynthesis and the conditions influencing astaxanthin accumulation is fairly limited. Thus, manipulation of the growth conditions to achieve desired biomass and astaxanthin yields can be a complicated process requiring cost-intensive and time-consuming experiment-based research. As a potential solution, modeling and simulation of biological systems have recently emerged, allowing researchers to predict/estimate astaxanthin production dynamics in selected organisms. Moreover, mathematical modeling techniques would enable further optimization of astaxanthin synthesis in a shorter period of time, ultimately contributing to a notable reduction in production costs. Thus, the present review comprehensively discusses existing mathematical modeling techniques which simulate the bioaccumulation of astaxanthin in diverse organisms. Associated challenges, solutions, and future perspectives are critically analyzed and presented.

Abstract
One of the challenges in the aquaculture industry is providing nutritionally balanced and environmentally sustainable live food for fish larvae. Therefore, the rearing techniques of fish larvae with preferred starter food should be given importance for obtaining optimal hatchery production. Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus larvae just after yolk absorption (body length 0.950 ± 0.004 mm; body weight 6.00 ± 0.02 mg) were reared in laboratory conditions for 16 days, feeding with 6 different diets to know their effect on survival and growth. The diets were live Monoraphidium littorale (T1), live enriched copepods with M. littorale (T2), powdered M. littorale (T3), powdered enriched copepods (T4), live M. littorale + live enriched copepods (T5), and powdered M. littorale + powdered enriched copepods (T6). The proximate composition, amino acid profile and fatty acid content of both M. littorale and copepods were analyzed. The biochemical analysis of the dried powder of enriched copepods and M. littorale revealed that both of them are excellent sources of protein, amino acids, and lipids, especially with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The O. niloticus larvae fed the T2 diet exhibited the most favourable outcomes, with significantly higher larval gain in weight and percent weight gain, in comparison to the larvae fed other diets (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). The LG% and SGR of the larvae were also significantly higher in T2 in comparison to the T1, T3, T4, and T6 (p < 0.001 for all comparisons) except T5. In addition, the highest percent survival rate of the larvae was observed in T2 (95 %) followed by T4 (93 %), T6 (93 %), T3 (82 %), T5 (73 %) and then T1 (43 %). Based on the present findings, it is recommended that live copepods enriched with M. littorale can be utilized as a starter food for the rearing of Nile tilapia, O. niloticus larvae in hatcheries because of its enriched nutritional profile.

Abstract
In recent years, astaxanthin as a natural substance has received widespread attention for its potential to replace traditional synthetic antioxidants and because its antioxidant activity exceeds that of similar substances. Based on this, this review introduces the specific forms of astaxanthin currently used as an antioxidant in foods, both in its naturally occurring forms and in artificially added forms involving technologies such as emulsion, microcapsule, film, nano liposome and nano particle, aiming to improve its stability, dispersion and bioavailability in complex food systems. In addition, research progress on the application of astaxanthin in various food products, such as whole grains, seafood and poultry products, is summarized. In view of the characteristics of astaxanthin, such as insolubility in water and sensitivity to light, heat, oxygen and humidity, the main research trends of astaxanthin-loaded systems with high encapsulation efficiency, good stability, good taste masking effect and cost-effectiveness are also pointed out. Finally, the possible sensory effects of adding astaxanthin to food aresummarized, providing theoretical support for the development of astaxanthin-related food.

Abstract
Chemical-based carotenoids have large implications to health as they may cause adverse side effects. Naturally occurring carotenoids mainly from microalgal sources are emerging as excellent substitute to combat cancer diseases. Astaxanthin is the most powerful antioxidant that derived from selected established microalgae with limited yield. Microalgal bioprospecting may provide the high-yielding sources for astaxanthin production. Hence, in the present research, freshwater microalgae Monoraphidium sp. (NCM no. 5585) and Scenedesmus obliquus (NCM no. 5586) were chosen to explore the unique potential of producing astaxanthin. Identification of bioactive metabolites in extracted carotenoid was analyzed through HPLC. Astaxanthin is identified as a major bioactive metabolite in both carotenoid fraction and β carotene only in Scenedesmus obliquus. Antioxidant potential of microalgal carotenoids was obtained by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The anti-proliferation activity of the extracted carotenoid from Monoraphidium sp. and Scenedesmus obliquus was evaluated against hepatocellular liver carcinoma cell line HUH7 by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay. Higher astaxanthin in Monoraphidium sp. leads to boosted antioxidant and anti-proliferation activity contrary to Scenedesmus obliquus that possess both astaxanthin and β carotene. Though freshwater microalgae have a huge potential to create beneficial metabolites like carotenoids, they are rarely studied in the pharmaceutical industry. This work was the first to investigate the anti-proliferative activity of Monoraphidium sp. and Scenedesmus obliquus carotenoid fraction on the HUH7 hepatocarcinoma cell line.

Abstract
Valorization of food processing effluent (FPE) by microalgae cultivation for astaxanthin production is regarded as a potential strategy to solve the environmental pollution of food processing industry and promote the development of eco-friendly agriculture. In this review paper, microalgal species which have the potential to be employed for astaxanthin in FPE were identified. Additionally, in terms of CO2 emission, the performances of microalgae cultivation and traditional methods for FPE remediation were compared. Thirdly, an in-depth discussion of some innovative technologies, which may be employed to lower the total cost, improve the nutrient profile of FPE, and enhance the astaxanthin synthesis, was provided. Finally, specific effects of dietary supplementation of algal astaxanthin on the growth rate, immune response, and pigmentation of animals were discussed. Based on the discussion of this work, the cultivation of microalgae in FPE for astaxanthin production is a value-adding process which can bring environmental benefits and ecological benefits to the food processing industry and agriculture. Particularly, technological innovations in recent years are promoting the shift of this new idea from academic research to practical application. In the coming future, with the reduction of the total cost of algal astaxanthin, policy support from the governments, and further improvement of the innovative technologies, the concept of growing microalgae in FPE for astaxanthin will be more applicable in the industry.

Abstract
Microalgae have emerged as the best source of high-value astaxanthin producers. Algal astaxanthin possesses numerous bioactivities hence the rising demand for several health applications and is broadly used in pharmaceuticals, aquaculture, health foods, cosmetics, etc. Among several low-priced synthetic astaxanthin, natural astaxanthin is still irreplaceable for human consumption and food-additive uses. This review highlights the recent development in production enhancement and cost-effective extraction techniques that may apply to large-scale astaxanthin biorefinery. Primarily, the biosynthetic pathway of astaxanthin is elaborated with the key enzymes involved in the metabolic process. Moreover, discussed the latest astaxanthin enhancement strategies mainly including chemicals as product inducers and byproducts inhibitors. Later, various physical, chemical, and biological cell disruption methods are compared for cell disruption efficiency, and astaxanthin extractability. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive review of advancements in astaxanthin research covering scalable upstream and downstream astaxanthin bioproduction aspects.

Abstract
Microalgae comprise a phylogenetically very diverse group of photosynthetic unicellular pro‐ and eukaryotic organisms growing in marine and other aquatic environments. While they are well explored for the generation of biofuels, their potential as a source of antimicrobial and prebiotic substances have recently received increasing interest. Within this framework, microalgae may offer solutions to the societal challenge we face, concerning the lack of antibiotics treating the growing level of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and fungi in clinical settings. While the vast majority of microalgae and their associated microbiota remain unstudied, they may be a fascinating and rewarding source for novel and more sustainable antimicrobials and alternative molecules and compounds. In this review, we present an overview of the current knowledge on health benefits of microalgae and their associated microbiota. Finally, we describe remaining issues and limitation, and suggest several promising research potentials that should be given attention.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to determine how photosynthetic and antioxidant activities vary in vegetative and dormant cells of Haematococcus pluvialis subjected to stresses in conditions representative of industrial productions of microalgae under solar light. METHODS AND RESULTS The effects of short-term oxidative treatments were examined on photosynthetic and antioxidant activities of Haematococcus pluvialis vegetative and resting cells. The vegetative cells have 1.6 times higher levels of phenolic compounds, but 1.7 times less catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities than the astaxanthin-enriched resting cells. Mainly, a UVA dose of 4 J cm-2 induced increases in photosystem II electron transport rates (ETRmax) (+15%), phenolic compounds (+15%), astaxanthin (+ 48%), catalase (+45%), and superoxide dismutase (+30%) activities in vegetative cells. CONCLUSION The UVA-dose strongly stimulates the photosynthetic and antioxidant activities of vegetative cells, but only the accumulation of astaxanthin in resting cells. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These preliminary results show that oxidative stresses at sub-lethal levels can stimulate the activities of microalgae. Further investigations are needed to estimate the real influence on metabolite productivities in industrial production conditions.

Abstract
Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms functioning as the green bio-factories for various pharmaceutical and biofuel products. To date, numerous attempts have been carried out to manipulate culture conditions to maximize the production of the desired metabolites. Because light is the energy source of microalgae for their growth and metabolites biosynthesis, it has been one of the most investigated variables emphasized on the deep understanding of how microalgae respond towards light changes as an external stimulus. This review discusses the effects of different light sources, light intensities, light wavelengths and length of photoperiod on various microalgae species, especially in terms of biomass and lipid productivity. Additionally, the relationship between photoregulation processes and lipid productivity of microalgae are also deliberated. The current available approaches of microalgae mass cultivation, including different types of open and closed systems are recapitulated with the intention to highlight the significant insights for the design of future photoreactors.

Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the effect of astaxanthin on the immune function and its safety in mice. It was administered once daily at low, medium and high doses (4.2, 8.35, 16.70 mg/kg BW) to mice for 30 days. Subsequently, the spleen and thymus index, spleen lymphocyte transformation activity, delayed allergy reaction, amounts of antibody-producing cells, half-hemolytic value HC50, carbon particle clearance rate, macrophage phagocytosis, and natural killer cell (NK) activity were determined. Acute oral toxicity and genotoxicity tests were conducted to evaluate the safety of astaxanthin. Compared with the control group, medium and high doses of astaxanthin significantly increased the proliferation and transformation activities of spleen lymphocytes, activities of antibody-producing cells, serum hemolysin levels, and carbon particle clearance rate in mice (phagocytic index). High doses significantly improved delayed allergy reaction and NK cell activity. Results of acute oral toxicity and genotoxicity tests were negative. Gross anatomical observations and histopathological examination showed no abnormal changes associated with the treatments. In the article, it is confirmed that astaxanthin treatments significantly improve immune functions and show no toxic effects in the experimental doses.
