Abstract
Due to the primogenic effect, the valence shells of divalent iron Fe(II) ([Ar]3d6) and trivalent lanthanides Ln(III) ([Xe]4fn) are compact enough to induce spin-state equilibrium for the 3d-block metal and atom-like luminescence for the 4f-block partner in Fe(II)-Ln(III) dyads. In the specific case of homoleptic pseudo-octahedral [Fe(II)N6] units, programming spin crossover (SCO) around room temperature at normal pressure requires the design of unsymmetrical didentate five-membered ring chelating N∩N' ligands, in which a five-membered (benz)imidazole heterocycle (N) is connected to a six-membered pyrimidine heterocycle (N'). Benefiting from the trans influence, the facial isomer fac-[Fe(II)(N∩N')3]2+ is suitable for inducing SCO properties at room temperature in solution. Its connection to luminescent [LnN6O3] chromophores working as non-covalent podates in the triple-stranded [Fe(II)Ln(L10)3]5+ helicates (Ln = Nd, Eu) controls the facial arrangement around Fe(II). The iron-based SCO behaviour of the 3d-4f complex mirrors that programmed in the mononuclear scaffold. Because of the different electronic structures of high-spin and low-spin [Fe(II)N6] units, their associated absorption spectra are different and modulate the luminescence of the appended lanthanide luminophore via intramolecular intermetallic energy transfers. It thus becomes possible to detect the spin state of the Fe(II) center, encoded by an external perturbation (i.e. writing), by lanthanide light emission (i.e. reading) in a single molecule and without disturbance. Shifting from visible emission (Ln = Eu) to the near-infrared domain (Ln = Nd) further transforms a wavy emitted signal intensity into a linear one, a protocol highly desirable for future applications in data storage and thermometry.

Abstract
Multifunctional magnetic materials have broad application prospects in molecular switches and information storage. In this study, four mononuclear Fe(II) complexes are synthesized using a series of pyrenylhydrazone ligands HL1-4. Two deprotonated ligands are coordinated to the iron(II) ions in an enolic form, leading to neutral complexes FeII(Lx)2·xsol with a FeIIN4O2 octahedral coordination environment. Magnetic measurements suggest that complex Fe(L1)2·2ACE (1·2ACE, ACE = acetone) is mainly low spin below 300 K and complex Fe(L3)2·ACE (3·ACE) is high spin, whereas complexes Fe(L2)2 (2) and Fe(L4)2·6H2O (4·6H2O) exhibit gradual spin crossover behavior. The spin states of complexes 1-4 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The substituent effect on the magnetic properties of the complexes is significant in this system. Temperature-dependent fluorescence emission spectra show the coexistence but no coupling effect of spin crossover and fluorescence for complexes 2 and 4·6H2O.

Abstract
Compared with the ripple of visible EuIII-based emission intensity induced by appended [FeIIN6] spin crossover (SCO) units, as detected in the triple-stranded [EuFe(L1)3]5+ helicate, the lanthanide-based luminescent detection of FeII spin-state equilibria could be improved significantly if the luminophore emission is shifted toward the near-infrared (NIR) domain. Replacing EuIII with NdIII in [NdFe(L1)3]5+ (i) maintains the favorable SCO properties in acetonitrile [critical temperature T1/2 = 322(2) K], (ii) saturates nonradiative vibrational relaxation processes in the 233-333 K range, and (iii) boosts the crucial intramolecular NdIII → FeII energy transfer rate processes, which are sensitive to the spin state of the FeII metallic center. Consequently, the steady-state NIR Nd(4F3/2 → 4IJ) emission of the luminophore is amplified and linearly correlated with the low-spin-[FeIIN6] and high-spin-[FeIIN6] mole fractions controlled by the SCO equilibrium. This paves the way for a straightforward and direct NIR luminescent reading/sensing of the FeII spin state in single molecules.

Abstract
Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Abstract
A series of mixed-anion Fe(NH2trz)3(BF4)2-x(SiF6)x/2 spin crossover complexes is obtained modifying the reaction time but also using an increase amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate as the source for the production and the incorporation of SiF62- competing with the BF42- anions present in the mother solution. The increase of the SiF62- anion inclusion to the detriment of the BF4- counterpart induces a shift of the temperature transition toward high temperatures leading to interesting bistability properties around room temperature with T1/2 spanning from 300 K to 325 K. Moreover, the implementation of a solid-liquid post synthetic modification approach from the Fe(NH2trz)3(BF4)2 parent complex with identical TEOS proportions and under certain experimental conditions lead systematically to the same Fe(NH2trz)3(BF4)1.2(SiF6)0.4 composition. This compound presents an abrupt spin crossover behaviour with a narrow hysteresis loop just above room temperature (320 K), which is stable under thermal cycling and along time with no specific storage conditions. Such crystalline powder sample incorporates homogeneous rod-shaped particles whose formation and physical properties can be followed simultaneously using infra-red spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and optical reflectance. The observation of a stabilized single ca. 800 nm population of mixed-anion particles starting from insoluble various sizes (from nano- to microscale) Fe(NH2trz)3(BF4)2 particles supports the key role of the solvent (water molecules) on the separation, the reactivity and the reorganization of the 1D iron-triazole chains forming the packing of the structure.

Abstract
Multifunctionality in spin-crossover (SCO) devices is limited to macroscopic or nanoscopic materials because of the need for long-range effects for inducing favorable cooperativity, efficient energy migration processes, and detectable magnetization transfer. The difficult reproducibility, control, and rational design of doped materials offer some place to SCO processes, modulating the optical properties of neighboring luminescent probes in single molecules. We report here on the combination of a [FeN6] chromophore, the SCO temperature and absorption spectra of which have been tuned to induce unprecedented room-temperature modulation of Eu(III)-based line-like luminescence in the molecular triple-helical [EuFe(L2)3]5+ complex in solution.

Abstract
A nanocomposite based on silica-coated AuNRs with the aminated silica-covered spin-crossover nanoparticles (SCO NPs) of the 1D iron(II) coordination polymer with the formula [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) is presented. For the synthesis of the SCO NPs, the reverse micelle method was used, while the gold nanorods (AuNRs) were prepared with the aspect ratio AR = 6.0 using the seeded-growth method and a binary surfactant mixture composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium oleate (NaOL). The final nanocomposite was prepared using the heteroaggregation method of combining different amounts of SCO NPs with the AuNRs. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the hybrid AuNRs coated with different amounts of SCO NPs were studied in detail by means of the Z-scan technique, revealing that the third-order NLO properties of the AuNRs@SCO are dependent on the amount of SCO NPs grafted onto them. However, due to the resonant nature of the excitation, SCO-induced NLO switching was not observed.

Abstract
1,4-Di(1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)butane (bbtr) forms a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer (1) in a reaction with iron(II) triflate. In the crystal lattice there are two crystallographically unique iron(II) ions surrounded octahedrally by a 1,2,3-triazole ring coordinated through nitrogen atoms N3. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that spin crossover for each crystallographically independent iron(II) ion proceeds at a different temperature (T1/2(Fe1) = 201 K; T1/2(Fe2) = 216 K), while the magnetic measurements showed that there is one step, complete thermally induced spin crossover (T1/2 = 205 K). Complex 1 undergoes, with time, single crystal-to-single crystal transformation (SCSC) to the converted system (1c) from the R3̄ to the P63 space group, accompanied by significant changes in the lattice parameter c (a shortening of approximately one-third) and consequently unit cell volume. Structural transformation is associated with rebuilding of the polymeric layer as well as the anion network, which is reflected in the results of Mössbauer studies. In the polymorphic system (1c) there are three crystallographically independent iron(II) ions. The temperature dependence results for magnetic susceptibility indicated complete, one-step spin crossover very similar to that of 1; however, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1c revealed that spin crossover for each crystallographically independent iron(II) ion occurs in a different manner, revealing three elementary stages (T1/2(Fe1) = 200 K; T1/2(Fe2) = 212 K, T1/2(Fe3) = 214 K).

Abstract
Spin crossover (SCO) iron (II) 1,2,4-triazole-based coordination compounds in the form of composite SCO@SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using a reverse microemulsion technique. The thickness of the silica shell and the morphology of the as obtained core@shell nanoparticles were studied by modifying the polar phase/surfactant ratio (ω), as well as the quantity and the insertion phase (organic, aqueous and micellar phases) of the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) precursor, the quantity of ammonia and the reaction temperature. The morphology of the nanoparticles was monitored by transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM) while their composition probed by combined elemental analyses, thermogravimetry and EDX analyses. We report that not only the particle size can be controlled but also the size of the silica shell, allowing for interesting perspectives in post-synthetic modification of the shell. The evolution of the spin crossover properties associated with the change in morphology was investigated by variable temperature optical and magnetic measurements.

Abstract
Bare (1) and silica coated (1@SiO2) spin crossover (SCO) nanoparticles based on the polymer {[Fe(NH2Trz)3](BF4)2}n have been prepared following a water-in-oil synthetic procedure. For 1, the critical temperatures of the spin transition are TC↓ = 214.6 K and TC↑ = 220.9 K. For 1@SiO2, the abruptness of the transition is enhanced and the critical temperatures are centred at room temperature (TC↓ = 292.1 K and TC↑ = 296.3 K). An inert Re(I) complex of formula [Re(phen)(CO)3(PETES)](PF6) (phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline; PETES = 2(4-pyridylethyl)triethoxysilane) (Re) was also synthesized yielding intense green emission centred at λem = 560 nm. The grafting of this complex on the silica shell of 1@SiO2 led to a bifunctional SCO-luminescence composite (1@SiO2/Re) whose luminescence properties were tuned by the spin state switching. Temperature-variable photophysical studies showed that luminescence and spin transition were synchronized through a radiative (trivial) energy transfer mechanism between the Re(I) and the Fe(II)-LS (LS, Low Spin) centres.

Abstract
In recent years, several examples of materials combining the molecular bistability of spin crossover (SC) and fluorescent moieties have flourished in the literature. Fluorescence is a sensitive probe, and SC may provide modulation of the signal, thus affording systems in which physicochemical changes in the environment of the SC centers could be effectively detected. On the contrary, organic semiconductor polymers are of great interest and, furthermore, have been successfully applied in different optoelectronic devices, such as transistors, solar cells, and light-emitting devices. Herein, we report on the fabrication of composites comprising a fluorescent, organic semiconductor polymer (polyfluorene) and a spin crossover compound, an Fe(II)-triazole coordination polymer. A strong synergy was observed between the spin transition of the Fe(II) compound and variations in the fluorescence of the organic polymer. The fluorescence modulation was shown to be reversible, with an increase of ≤20% with respect to the original value.

Abstract
Reaction of 1,2-di(tetrazol-2-yl)ethane (ebtz) with Fe(BF4 )2 ⋅6 H2 O in different nitriles yields one-dimensional coordination polymers [Fe(ebtz)2 (RCN)2 ](BF4 )2 ⋅nRCN (n=2 for R=CH3 (1) and n=0 for R=C2 H5 (2) C3 H7 (3), C3 H5 (4), CH2 Cl (5)) exhibiting spin crossover (SCO). SCO in 1 and 3-5 is complete and occurs above 160 K. In 2, it is shifted to lower temperatures and is accompanied by wide hysteresis (T1/2 ↓ =78 K, T1/2 ↑ =123 K) and proceeds extremely slowly. Isothermal (80 K) time-resolved single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed a complex nature for the HS→LS transition in 2. An initial, slow stage is associated with shrinkage of polymeric chains and with reduction of volume at 77 % (in relation to the difference between cell volumes VHS -VLS ) whereas only 16 % of iron(II) ions change spin state. In the second stage, an abrupt SCO occurs, associated with breathing of the crystal lattice along the direction of the Fe-nitrile bonds, while the nitriles reorient. HS→LS switching triggered by light (808 nm) reveals the coupling of spin state and nitrile orientation. The importance of this coupling was confirmed by studies of [Fe(ebtz)2 (C2 H5 CN/C3 H7 CN)2 ](BF4 )2 mixed crystals (2 a, 2 b), showing a shift of T1/2 to higher values and narrowing of the hysteresis loop concomitant with an increase of the fraction of butyronitrile. This increase reduces the capability of nitrile molecules to reorient. Density functional theory (DFT) studies of models of 1-5 suggest a particular possibility of 2 to adopt a low (140-145°) value of its Fe-N-C(propionitrile) angle.

Abstract
Nanoparticles of the spin-crossover coordination polymer [FeL(bipy)]n were synthesized by confined crystallization within the core of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer micelles. The 4VP units in the micellar core act as coordination sites for the Fe complex. In the bulk material, the spin-crossover nanoparticles in the core are well isolated from each other allowing thermal treatment without disintegration of their structure. During annealing above the glass transition temperature of the PS block, the transition temperature is shifted gradually to higher temperatures from the as-synthesized product (T1/2 ↓=163 K and T1/2 ↑=170 K) to the annealed product (T1/2 ↓=203 K and T1/2 ↑=217 K) along with an increase in hysteresis width from 6 K to 14 K. Thus, the spin-crossover properties can be shifted towards the properties of the related bulk material. The stability of the nanocomposite allows further processing, such as electrospinning from solution.

Abstract
The modulation of light emission by Fe(II) spin-crossover processes in multifunctional materials has recently attracted major interest for the indirect and noninvasive monitoring of magnetic information storage. In order to approach this goal at the molecular level, three segmental ligand strands, L4-L6, were reacted with stoichiometric mixtures of divalent d-block cations (M(II) = Fe(II) or Zn(II)) and trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III) = La(III) or Eu(III)) in acetonitrile to give C3-symmetrical dinuclear triple-stranded helical [LnM(Lk)3]5+ cations, which can be crystallized with noncoordinating counter-anions. The divalent metal M(II) is six-coordinate in the pseudo-octahedral sites produced by the facial wrapping of the three didentate binding units, the ligand field of which induces variable Fe(II) spin-state properties in [LnFe(L4)3]5+ (strictly high-spin), [LnFe(L5)3]5+ (spin-crossover (SCO) around room temperature), and [LnFe(L6)3]5+ (SCO at very low temperature). The introduction of the photophysically active Eu(III) probe in [EuFe(Lk)3]5+ results in europium-centered luminescence modulated by variable intramolecular Eu(III) → Fe(II) energy-transfer processes. The kinetic analysis implies Eu(III) → Fe(II) quenching efficiencies close to 100% for the low-spin configuration and greater than 95% for the high-spin state. Consequently, the sensitivity of indirect luminescence detection of Fe(II) spin crossover is limited by the resulting weak Eu(III)-centered emission intensities, but the dependence of the luminescence on the temperature unambiguously demonstrates the potential of indirect lanthanide-based spin-state monitoring at the molecular scale.

Bilayer Thin Films That Combine Luminescent and Spin Crossover Properties for an Efficient and Reversible Fluorescence Switching. MAGNETOCHEMISTRY 2019. Abstract
We report on the vacuum thermal deposition of bilayer thin films of the luminescent complex Ir(ppy)3, tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III), and the spin crossover complex [Fe(HB(tz)3)2], bis[hydrotris(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)borate]iron(II). Switching the spin state of iron ions from the low spin to the high spin state around 337 K leads to a reversible jump of the luminescence intensity, while the spectrum shape and the luminescence lifetime remain unchanged. The luminescence modulation occurs due to the different UV light absorption properties of the iron complex in the two spin states and its magnitude can therefore be precisely adjusted by varying the film thickness. These multilayer luminescence switches hold potential for micro- and nanoscale thermal sensing and imaging applications.

Abstract
The abrupt high spin (HS)→low spin (LS) transition (T↓ 1/2 =136 K) in [Fe(hbtz)2 (CH3 CN)2 ](BF4 )2 (hbtz=1,6-di(tetrazol-2-yl)hexane) is finished at 100 K and further thermal treatment influences the spin crossover. Subsequent heating involves a change of the spin state in the same way (T↑ 1/2 =136 K) on cooling. In contrast, cooling below 100 K triggers different behavior and T↑ 1/2 is shifted to 170 K. The extraordinary structural changes that occurred below 100 K are responsible for the observed diversity of properties. A unique feature of the low-temperature phase is the rebuilding of the anion network expressed by a shift of anions inside the polymeric layer at a distance of 1.2 Å as well as the relative shift of neighboring layers at over 4 Å. These structural alterations, connected with a phase transition, become the origin of the strain, which in most cases causes crystal cleaving. In a sample composed from crystals crushed as a result of the phase transition or as a result of mechanical crumbling, the hysteresis loop vanishes; however, annealing the sample allows to its partial restoration. A replacement of acetonitrile by other nitriles leads to preservation of the polymeric structure and spin crossover, but no phase transition follows.

Abstract
The search for bifunctional materials showing synergies between spin crossover (SCO) and luminescence has attracted substantial interest since they could be promising platforms for new switching electronic and optical technologies. In this context, we present the first three-dimensional FeII Hofmann-type coordination polymer exhibiting SCO properties and luminescence. The complex {FeII(bpben)[Au(CN)2]}@pyr (bpben = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene) functionalized with pyrene (pyr) guests undergoes a cooperative multi-step SCO, which has been investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction, single crystal UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, and magnetic and calorimetric measurements. The resulting fluorescence from pyrene and exciplex emissions are controlled by the thermal and light irradiation (LIESST effect) dependence of the high/low-spin state population of FeII. Conversely, the SCO can be tracked by monitoring the fluorescence emission. This ON-OFF interplay between SCO and luminescence combined with the amenability of Hofmann-type materials to be processed at the nano-scale may be relevant for the generation of SCO-based sensors, actuators and spintronic devices.

Abstract
Chelate coordination of non-symmetrical didentate pyrazine-benzimidazole (L1) or pyridine-benzimidazole (L2) N-donor ligands around divalent iron in acetonitrile produces stable homoleptic triple-helical spin crossover [Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ complexes existing as mixtures of meridional (C1 -symmetry) and facial (C3 -symmetry) isomers in slow exchange on the NMR timescale. The speciation deviates from the expected statistical ratio mer/fac=3:1, a trend assigned to the thermodynamic trans-influence, combined with solvation effects. Consequently, the observed spin state FeII low-spin ↔FeII high-spin equilibria occurring in [Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ refer to mixtures of complexes in solution, an issue usually not considered in this field, but which limits rational structure-properties correlations. Taking advantage of the selective and quantitative formation of isostructural facial isomers in non-constrained related spin crossover d-f helicates (HHH)-[LnFe(Lk)3 ]5+ (Ln is a trivalent lanthanide, Lk=L5, L6), we propose a novel strategy for assigning pertinent thermodynamic driving forces to each spin crossover triple-helical isomer. The different enthalpic contributions to the spin state equilibrium found in mer-[Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ and fac-[Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ reflect the Fe-N bond strengths dictated by the trans-influence, whereas a concomitant solvent-based entropic contribution reinforces the latter effect and results in systematic shifts of the spin crossover transitions toward higher temperature in the facial isomers.

Abstract
1-(3-Halopropyl)-1H-tetrazoles and their corresponding FeII spin-crossover complexes have been investigated in a combined experimental and theoretical study. Halogen substitution was found to positively influence the spin transition, shifting the transition temperature about 70 K towards room temperature. Halogens located at the ω position were found to be too far away from the coordinating tetrazole moiety to have an electronic impact on the spin transition. The subtle variation of the steric demand of the ligand in a highly comparable series was found to have a comparatively large impact on the spin-transition behavior, which highlights the sensitivity of the effect to subtle structural changes.

Abstract
A spin-crossover coordination polymer [Fe(L1)(bipy)]n (where L = a N2O22- coordinating Schiff base-like ligand bearing a phenazine fluorophore and bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) was synthesized and exhibits a 48 K wide thermal hysteresis above room temperature (T1/2↑ = 371 K and T1/2↓ = 323 K) that is stable for several cycles. The spin transition was characterized using magnetic measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DSC measurements. T-dependent X-ray powder diffraction reveals a structural phase transition coupled with the spin transition phenomenon. The dimeric excerpt {(μ-bipy)[FeL1(MeOH)]2}·2MeOH of the coordination polymer chain crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅ and reveals that the packing of the molecules in the crystal is dominated by hydrogen bonds. Investigation of the emission properties of the complexes with regard to temperature shows that the spin crossover can be tracked by monitoring the emission spectra, since the emission color changes from greenish to a yellow color upon the low spin-to-high spin transition.
